cross disciplinary training in gubat banwa
so, GUBAT BANWA is a big martial arts game of esoteric martial arts. of beatdown and bone breaking. bakbakan at suntukan, pangamot ug pagdaug. it focuses on martial arts and the culture that surrounds that. during ancient seasian times (the main foundation for this game), formal categorized schools didn't exist: participating in your culture was you learning its martial arts, or a random hermit in the sea cave could teach you a secret martial art, or your family could have its own secret martial art, etc. etc.
so martial arts classes (in gubat banwa they're called Disciplines) are expressions of culture and tradition. from a mechanical side, I knew I wanted to make Gubat Banwa a multiclassing-first game, a la Lancer, for multiple reasons
I like multiclassing, I almost always multiclass
You get access to more of the game and the game's lore (much of Gubat Banwa's lore is in the disciplines)
You get to write a plurality of classes that deal with a plurality of playstyles
It makes writing Disciplines easier--they become small packages of power instead of the long Narrative Playbooks that they are a la D&D 4e's classes. this also makes making Disciplines easier as you don't have to write one for a 12 Level long progression
it creates a more emergent character progression (a Mangangayaw learning Sword Saint techniques for example might be a raider who raided a Virbanwenyo settlement and got the resident martial artist to teach him a thing or two, or it could be that they started picking up how Virbanwenyo Penitents fought)
however, Disciplines were more than just classes, they're also martial arts in their own right. So as I deepened my understanding with the Martial Arts I also found further justifications for multiclassing [which we like to call crosstraining]). these are from my and GB's Art Director Dylan's experiences from Filipino Martial Arts:
to become a true grandmaster is to learn or observe a large variety of styles (see: Johnny Chiuten, Anciong Bacon, etc.)
most real grandmasters that began their own FMA schools are those that studied and learned techniques from a wide variety of martial arts (Anciong Bacon knew Boxing and Dumog, for example. Johnny Chiuten knew multiple Chinese Martial Arts and trained in Balintawak and Lapunti, GM Filemon Caburnay learned both the arts of blacksmithing and of multiple arnis styles as he traveled across Visayas and Mindanao, and learned Kung Fu from Johnny Chiuten, before going down the path of perfecting his own fighting style that became Lapunti Arnis de Abanico)
even my own master in Lapunti who started with Lapunti was exposed to other Arnis and Martial Art styles so he was able to build his own style around it, and was able to contribute his own moves into modern Lapunti. i can see a bit of Chinese Martial Art influence in his movements now, a bunch of balintawak progression
very often if you're a student of violence, you will be learning multiple combat arts both out of necessity and out of love for movement. a balintawak warrior might have their movements augmented with jiujitsu training, a lapunti could benefit from learning sikaran, etc. etc.
kadungganan are meant to be nascent grandmasters, especially those that reach legend 12, so this is the main justification for the multiclassing instead of just having 1 martial art that you perfect. in real life this doesn't really happen, especially if you want to perfect your own fighting style. the assemblage of multiple techniques from 12 Legends worth of progression is there to facilitate the fantasy of a Kadungganan perfecting their martial art style, like the grandmasters of old
i knew since the earliest stages of gubat banwa that i wasn't going to compromise the multiclassing aspect, i just find it very serendipitous that crosstraining fits so well into the martial arts fantasy. it makes me pretty satisfied and happy, and i'm glad i didn't bend to internal talking and thinking about making a "pure discipline" progression possible

Personal Log
Star Date: 75010.2
I return to duty after three months of intensive integration and recovery on Trill at the Symbyosis Commitee Campus.
Well, one month tense negotiation and interrogation followed by two months of intensive recovery.
Sonan's death was--still is unthinkable. However it was no question that in that moment I would accept Baz, the symbiont. To turn him away would be to turn away Sonan and seven other souls. To not accept would be against everything I worked for as a qualified Host. To protect them in times of crisis is an honor, even if temporarily. Re-association would not be tolerated long term. I knew this.
I did not know that Baz was not onboard with 'temporary'. The first feeling I remember was relief. Not quite mine, not quite not-mine. Then an overwhelming rush of resolution. I knew then that Penn Te'are was gone. That my name was Penn Baz. My husband and former host Sonan Baz was dead.
And this was not going to go over well.
To their credit, The Symbiosis Commission was only doing their job. They were persistent that I should relinquish Baz. It was not too late by medical standards. And, truth be told, I might have agreed, if it wasn't for the insistence of Baz bubbling within me that this was what was wanted. After a month of tense negotiations, the committee was forced to agree. A representative of Starfleet was called to perform a mind meld with the symbiont. It expressed that this experience was highly prized for this individual symbiont, irrelevant of the hosts. While I'm not sure yet if I myself completely agree, I accept this honor and adventure. Even if it complicates my grief...
After some integrations and orientation, I was deemed fit to return to duty. I was not to return to The Valentine and reassigned to The Hardaway with orders pending. 820 personnell, heavy weaponry and regenerative hull, I'm pretty sure we aren't about do be doing milk runs. Suits me fine. You don't become Starfleet for the mundane.
The crew is definitely an interesting mix.
The only one I've been able to meet personally thus far is my 'Number One'. Commander Orlal Oronat had been kind enough to provide me with a detailed report regarding my senior staff. She seems most adept at maintaining morale onboard. She has also populated my calendar with crew events and organizations. Goodness. For a ship with no family support, it seems that we do not lose the ability to care for our crew.
Captain Kovek. Helmsman. I'll say I'm shocked. The Vulcan who performed our mind meld doesn't captain his own vessel; He is flying mine? Not a coincidence clearly, but I'll leave it. His service record is nigh legendary. Replimat talk is that he outstripped a Vesta in a Galaxy class. Let them "observe" me, I look forward to seeing his performance.
Let's see, Chief Engineer. LT. Commander D'yan Jrooi. He's just completed a fellowship the Daystrom institute hosted by Temporal Affairs. I'll admit to being curiously disturbed. Something about Daystrom and time evokes the sound of the Prime Directive shattering. I'll keep an open mind, I imagine that a Sikaran is more interested in automation than auto distruct.
Lt. Commander Niri. Oh..a Tamarian. A freshly minted Chief Science Officer. Exolinguistics specialty. It seems she's working on a Standard Tamarian for Terrans as a part of her continuing studies. Per her status update the project is "Mother-in-Law, her visit extended". I guess that means "a nightmare".
Dr. Fuya has recently taken over the position of Chief Medical officer. He's by all accounts an exceptionally well loved man. Glowing recommendations from the Kais overseeing the orphanages on Bajor and commendations from Starfleet medical for courage under fire. There's some mention here of ruffled feathers due to the current organization overhaul in Sickbay. It seems the doctors impeccable bedside manner may be reserved for the patients.
Let's see, and to round it all out my Tactical Officer, Commander Sivalaa Maata has recently returned to ship duty after completing an intensive security training detail with former KDF and Ex-Borg Personnel. Her file also shows various leaves and assignments to all corners of known space. Though I'm seeing a conspicuous absence of Orion or her larger colonies in that list.
All told, it appears we are well suited to handle whatever Starfleet wants to throw us into. We've got one more night in space dock before receiving our orders and it seems that everything is running smoothly. I'll spend some time unpacking before I make my rounds and get familiarized with the faces.
Sonan, I'm not so sure that we should be doing this. I really hope this isn't a giant mistake. Of course, if it is a giant mistake, at least it's a historic one. Who doesn't like making history?
Right....big smiles everyone in there. Here we go.

Hiii! I saw your guesstimates and i wanted to say i'm impressed with the efforts and searches you do!
Btw, i wanted to share this idea with you... what martial arts do you think that fits your favourite TR characters?
Just a silly question, cuz i wanted to know what kind of fighting style you think they would use... :')
Hey there shinyicecube!! Again, sorry that it took so long for me to answer this... And thank you so much for your kind words!!
Hmmmm I don’t know much about martial arts tbh, and I think for the most part, most of the TR characters just brawl, so it’s pretty freestyle, imo!
The clearest examples are...
Rindou - BJJ or Jiujitsu. Possibly MMA?
Mucho - Judo, as shown and stated in Chapter 160
Mikey / Baji - Judo, cuz of the Sano Dojo
South - MMA, as stated in the epilogue
Benkei / Waka - Presumably boxing/kick-boxing, cuz of their gym.
Other than them, there aren’t any distinct or explicitly mentioned martial arts style.
But if you are to ask for my preferences / headcanons for my favourite characters...
Izana - Sikaran, a kind of Filipino Martial Art that focuses on kicking. From what I’ve seen, it resembles the high kicks that Izana did in the Kanto Incident when he fought Mikey!
Kakucho - I think he’ll go for something brutal and with heavy strikes. I can see something like Krav Maga and Muay Thai for him. (Also because I personally just love watching Muay Thai hahahaha)

personal headcanons on Miruko's ethnicity and fighting style
Possibly Japanese-Filipino
Because of the Philippines' geographical proximity to JP, and the fact that Filipinos make up the fourth largest group of foreign residents in Japan, I like to headcanon her as Japanese-Filipino!
Miruko's hometown is Hiroshima according to the Ultra Analysis:
A moderate distribution of people from PH reside there:
Possibly (Afro-)Brazilian
Brazilians are another large group of foreign residents in JP (the 3rd largest). If I were to think of her as Japanese-Filipino, I like to envision she's mixed Brazilian as well, given the PH and BR communities' overlap in distribution, and somewhat close ties.
Like Brazilian Residents in Japan, there are many Philippine residents living in the Aichi area and northern Kanto region [...] both Philipine residents and Brazilian residents tend to exchange information among themselves and support each other.
I personally really like the possibility that she's Afro-Brazilian-Filipino, especially since there's a lack of decent Blasian characters in E. Asian media!
Filipino foot fighting
Miruko probably has a background in wrestling and/or MMA. Her outfit resembles a wrestling leotard, and Horikoshi has stated that her hero name is based on a fighter:
Because of her reliance on leg power and kicking, I like to imagine her fight style is heavily influenced by Sikaran (Filipino foot fighting), possibly mixed with other martial arts.
Sikaran is a Filipino martial arts focused almost exclusively on kicking. Sikaran utilizes only the feet as a rule for sport, and the hands are only used for blocking. The player uses his legs 90% of the time and his hands 10%, and only for blocking or parrying blows.
Feel free to comment your own input if any~

Lakas Filipino Martial Arts Podcast Episode 24: Tuhon Ray Dionaldo – The Bridge

I could barely believe it. I was standing outside in the Southern California sun, looking up at the Ed Parker’s Kenpo Karate sign at his original school in Pasadena. I was about to go inside and meet Tuhon Ray Dionaldo, the incredible Filipino Martial Artist that had captivated my attention over the last several months on YouTube. A kick
is a physical strike using the leg, in unison usually with an area of the knee or lower using the foot, heel, tibia, ball of the foot, blade of the foot, toes or knee (the latter is also known as a knee strike). This type of attack is used frequently by hooved animals as well as humans in the context of stand-up fighting. Kicks play a significant role in many forms of martial arts, such as savate, taekwondo, MMA, sikaran, karate, Pankration, Kung Fu, Vovinam, kickboxing, Muay Thai, Yaw-Yan, capoeira, silat, and kalaripayattu.
