i'm not interested in finishing watching c2 (first 10 episodes bored me to death) and i only know c3, so what's the deal with essek? did he have a bad redemption arc? did he have a good one? do people just not like him for some reason? because i keep seeing his fans say the only reason c3 fans are saying his redemption arc sucked is to defend imogen and her mom and that seems too shallow to be the real reason.

first of all thank you for trusting in me to give a nuanced answer. ill do my best. essek is one of my favorite characters, but also so historically loved by fandom it has led to altercations and the drowning out of pretty much any other character in fandom spaces. ill try to explain. im sorry for how long this will be.

he was already deeply beloved as an npc for a long while before campaign 2 episode 97 dropped the fact that he was working with ludinus. he had taken luxon beacons (the object ludinus used to power the malleus key, what made opal & ted, what's in ashtons head) from his people in the dynasty - these objects were considered completely sacred to them, and the realization the empire had them, and the dynasty retaliating to get them, led to the war of ash and light which permeates much of c2's plot. so, functionally, essek's action led to war. essek was also at times in charge of or allowed to run interrogations on dynasty prisoners including nott/veth's husband yeza. to keep suspicion off of him, essek shifted blame onto a man in the dynasty who he had a petty grudge against, changed his memory, and set the dynasty onto him - this man was later given to the empire in a peace negotiation, so ludinus then had all control over knowledge on essek's involvement (bar the m9).

his remorse began with the m9, and how their lives had been effected by war and what the empire had done, and there is some implication that essek realized he was perhaps groomed by ludinus (and to a lesser degree made uncomfortable by his cohort trent) - though i should note essek was a (young) adult in government when he gave his people's artifacts away. essek hated the fact that his people were religious in regards to the luxon and did not wish to research it, and thought the cerberus assembly would be able to learn more about it.

essek's arc has been long praised as a very good one, and i think it mostly is. while i cant say we really see his kindness & newly brimming empathy fully extended, he does learn to see others as more than tools. he is still smug over his peoples religion vs his knowledge of the luxon, but learns to respect his culture enough that ludinus probably would not be able to sway him from it by insulting it now. he fights at the m9's side during the last arc, defends caleb from trent & the vollstreckers, helps fix caduceus's home. he is loyal to them forever and not just a traitor any longer. i definitely see some holes in it as he doesnt show much care to anyone but the m9, it is relatively quick how he descends into self hate about his actions that hes generally comforted for, and i worry at times he sinks too much into the soft hot boy flanderization due to everyone even the cast pushing it onto him (yes, softness & being too harsh exist in his characterization and are disliked at once, i know they are opposite traits). but i think it's good when a character is still an ass after redemption and matt clearly wants to avoid him being a soft boi in c3 whilst also maintaining that he has learned humanity & love.

you can see how that would be compelling, along with his general personality and good looks. this made him so compelling that his fans got, uh.... interesting. and that is probably the base problem that sets this discourse. (be aware my experience of his fans is primarily on twitter and in chats.)

folk would get mad and call the show unwatchable without his presence as if every other character was disgusting & boring to them (as if calebs character arc is not. literally. a parralel to esseks). they only cared about shadowgast (but only cared about essek within it, not caleb) and would be furious these two deeply aloof traumatized men didnt fuck on screen after 6 episodes knowing each other, called caleb abusive for not messaging him after a few episodes, called liam (who is iirc bi) homo/biphobic and abusive to matt for not kissing essek at one point or another. when caleb & essek did bond at the end of c2 and it was said they got together for a time that was not enough for fans, who claimed it homophobic (this magically mostly disappeared when folk saw other mlm stories did and do continue to play out in cr, which they only realized when orym existed and was a gold star gay - i, as a gay man, do not care on the scale they do lol). astrid was completely slammed into the mud by essek fans for being his mirror but a woman (they magically did not hate wulf, the last mirror in this scenario, a man, as much). people were furious essek did not have merch at the point where not even many pcs did yet and said it was homophobic (this magically stopped when he eventually got a portrait and chibi). a few learned he was ace/demi and called it a cop out, or otherwise ignored any nuance of it because they were horny about wizard yaoi (im aware ace/demi folks do have sex, but sometimes folk use that as a justification for ignoring the ace spectrum part of an identity). from personal experience, essek fans can be..... very disturbing, predatory individuals with no regard for who they are deeply sexual around, but that is just who i met and i do not want to go into that experience. in short, a lot of c2 era fandom has BEEF with them. i cannot say it is unjustified.

so with all that context, where does that leave the character and why do people compare him to liliana & imogen?

it is my genuine opinion from observation a lot of fandom on here & twitter that essek/shadowgast/caleb fans can be.... sexist. it does not go unnoticed to me that imogen has an extremely similar moral arc to caleb and yet is called evil when caleb is called traumatized & struggling with demons but a good man. caleb was part of the vollstrecker (assassins for the empire) as a youth but broke, and ran, after killing his parents, and had to learn he was more than dirt, and learn to love again. imogen began easily jealous & in turmoil about herself and her mother, but has grown to be one of the most empathetic people who is constantly struggling between sacrifice and her simple wish to live with laudna, that it seems the universe wants to fight. both are aware they could be or are seen as living shit for their youth or conception and accept it. both dont really know how to find a way out of that. i think both are incredible characters. i notice when fans only acknowledge the hero's journey of one.

as for liliana & essek..... look, essek has a very defined character arc that we have seen come to fruition and end in redemption. liliana (and by extension bor'dor and other ruby vanguard folk) have not yet. essek was framed as neutral at first and liliana was framed as ludinus's ally. i get it. but it is impossible to me to not see liliana in the steps of essek at the beginning of his own arc. if anything i think her intentions (if not actions) are infinitely less selfish than esseks, as she wished to do this to save her daughter. ludinus has caught so many in his web, and essek got out, and liliana just realized she's in the webbing. whats interesting is how we see clear as day every conversation they have that liliana has been brainwashed into cult mentality & justification, and yet only had one or two conversations vaguely indicating this about essek, and yet essek is always praised as a survivor where liliana is not. bor'dor is very clearly like essek in being an oppressed young man who sees a calling made by a powerful older man, but entire breakdowns of how men of color are recruited into the far right have been written about essek where bor'dor (actual man of color) is despised by the same people. the tldr on this is i do think some folk can be so drunk on Hating Essek juice they swing too far in their assumptions, but the pattern of his fans misinterpreting everyone else to elevate him is based on precendent thats happened for years, and i think it is deeply.... disappointing? to watch such a nuanced story play out in c3 and refuse to engage with it whilst claiming anyone who wishes to analyze the way a cult breaks your brain is misandrist.

im so sorry this is so long, but i really do not know how else to describe all this without its nuance. i hope i wrote something that made sense.

SHADOW OF THE SITH. Ch. 5.

NAJI._RAIDER'S_COVE.

Anger wasn't an unusual feeling that radiated from her Sith partner. Over the last month or two, it seemed that was the only thing the now fully-clothed in all black woman ever really felt. Anger, or at times when they were alone, nothing. Nothing to grasp at, only the unexplainable void that she tried to make sense of. Then, one day after their excursion to the slaver's island, her mind was closed off again. Since then, it was only ever red-hot anger that seemed as if it would explode at any given time, and there was a firm wall in place behind that. She wondered why, it wasn't as if she'd ever been good at deciphering her moods, but this was odd in itself.

Naji wouldn't call them friends (stars, she was a Sith Lord, a Darth!), but it put her at a major disadvantage to even list her as an acquaintance, anything more than just the Sith I'm Forced To Work With For The Good Of The Galaxy.

But, she's surprised now, and not in a good way. Lana has delivered the news - Theron is gone, and has been captured while they were away. And all she can feel from the Wrath -Tri'ama, as she's been made privy to- is roiling regret. Distressed, as she's unable to even make eye contact with either other blonde woman. There wasn't any anger to be found, but she's regretful. Maybe for not being here when Theron had been captured, maybe for another reason she didn't understand at that very moment. Her sadness is evident for just a second, before she turns her attention back to Lana, the wall put back in place and less than boiling anger at the surface. Naji steps in, trying to throw a comforting nod at the woman before she blows her metaphorical top, "Whatever happened, we'll learn the story from Theron himself when we get him back, right Lana?"

"I'd rather we not impede upon his abduction, he'll be able to do what he does best, but yes. I suppose we will." the Sith says, as Jakarro and C2-D4 make their return to the safehouse. The Wrath's left eye twitches at Lana's unflappable feelings towards Theron's abduction (Naji can't blame her, she also thought the woman would be much more concerned about her partner), though she isn't sure if it's a trick of the eye. It's good to see the Wookie starship captain and his droid again, as they've been invaluable to their mission on Rishi thus far. Even Tri'ama's knitted eyebrows lift for just a moment, halfway in between a wave and contemplation.

"Where I come from, we value our allies! We do not let them become imprisoned!" Jakarro roars before C2-D4 can manage a greeting to the women present, and Naji's jaw drops unintentionally as she translates, covering her mouth in shock.

"What did he say?" Tri'ama asks a little too quickly to be purely for analytical reasons before she can even begin to process what Jakarro was alluding to. A visible grimace is painted across her face as a fire burns beneath her previously cerulean blue eyes. They've faded into a piercing yellow again, as they often do when she's angry, "You know good and well I don't speak Wookie."

"I-" Naji is unsure of whether to tell her or not, afraid of the coming storm that will surely blow through the safehouse if she does, before sighing (might as well get it over with and let her take out on those more responsible than Lana), "Jakarro is alluding to that Theron wasn't simply...taken without outside assistance."

Tri'ama seems a tad confused, raising an eyebrow in mild confusion before her force signature becomes white-hot, scalding if it had been a physical representation of it. She's realized, and she's rather upset about it as well. A scowl replaces her previous compliance, and she balls her gloved hands into fists, "Lana..." she growls, "You had something to do with this!"

"Theron has his job, as do we." Lana responds, almost coldly as she deflects the accusation, her golden tinted eyes hardening behind her gaze, "There's more to be gained from his abduction than you think, Wrath."

Tri'ama wants to say something else, something with a bite behind it, but she deflates as she looks around the room. She moves her head too quickly for Naji to figure what her eyes landed on that made her less frustrated with the situation. Tri'ama is unsure, no longer sure-footed on her next move as she seemed to always be. It's a tad frightening if she's being entirely honest. But the impregnable wall remains up in her mind as she runs a hand through her hair, "Then what in the stars do you suggest we do next?"

"Our next move is to interrupt the Revanites to the best of our abilities, if not stop them outright. There's a Rishii village on the outskirts of the Cove. I suppose that would be our next stop." Lana says, not an ounce of emotion filtering into her voice. Jakarro says something else, and though Tri'ama looks about five seconds away from crushing the droid with the Force, she listens intently. Through the exchange of plans, Naji is suddenly very aware that she's working with two Sith lords, one with a roaring flame and the other with an iceberg. Tri'ama is for someone reason very worked up over this (she'd make it a point to ask about this infatuation with Theron that had been rather evident at another time when it wouldn't get her stabbed), and Lana is not (she'd rather not ask anything from her, as polite as she seemed, now that she knew what she was capable of...), "Jakarro and I will join you there."

"Thank you." Naji is unable to steel her own voice to bid her goodbye, but Tri'ama grumbles a few curses as she disappears out of the safehouse. The Barsen'thor wants to say something else, maybe even a scalding remark if she's feeling particularily cold about this, but can't find anything to say to Lana. Her mind goes absolutely blank as she regards her. The woman had allegedly allowed her partner, her friend (if she were being generous) to be captured by the enemy. As cliche as it was, with friends like her, who needed enemies?

Was this how all Sith were?

Maybe she should learn this Sith mind trick of closing off her mind to her allies. It seemed to be rather effective for these two, and when on Nar Shaddaa, do as the Nar Shaddaains do.

If she'd ever been to Nar Shaddaa for something other than hunting down Children of the Emperor. Spoilers, she hadn't.

TRI'AMA._RISHII_VILLAGE.

It would be an understatement to say she was angry. Hell, it would be even worse to say she was simply pissed with the current state of affairs.

The whirling of the blades around her as she cut down Revanite after Revanite didn't sate her bloodthirst, and even shoving one through a communications unit couldn't kill this burning frustration building inside of her. Later, her Jedi companion would make note that her eyes had gone a shade of red that she and her new Twi'lek companion had never seen before. She would also go on to say she wasn't just radiating anger in her force signature (she had left the floodgates in her mind wide open), the pure distress that the Barsen'thor had picked up on was terrifying to admit to.

Tri'ama had been thinking so much of just being so appalled by Lana's gall to just let Theron go that she hadn't even called Pierce back to continue on to the Rishii village (though he chose not to rejoin her on the trip through the base after she'd realized and called him, and for someone reason she had reacted by just hanging up the holo). Not feeling his presence behind her at all times was a new feeling, not to mention the Barsen'thor's sniper was a little too crafty at times. They tripped over one another, and though his emotions were also well repressed, his fear was small, but still there when a blaster shot grazed her cheek. An accident, maybe, but Tri'ama wasn't taking any chances with him. Republic soldiers rarely could be trusted to work with Sith and not throw a fit. He was much more precise with his shots after her force powers lost control for just a moment (she didn't remember it through her seeing-red-haze, but she'd cracked the base of the tree he'd been perched in when another shot got a tad too close to taking her out along with the enemy she was fighting), though they didn't exchange a word until they arrived at the village. Very curt, Zenith had been introduced into her codex of the Barsen'thor's companions.

It seemed that working alongside her own people would have to have reservations now as well.

She couldn't even muster up the energy to report properly to Lana after they'd arrived in the small hut that was now their base of operations. It'd been decided that since they were from opposing factions, they'd work on opposite sides of the Revanite factions as well. She'd be heading in alone on the Imperial side of the Revanite camp, while the Barsen'thor and Zenith would continue onto the Republic side. Tri'ama and Lana had agreed it would be best to cause as much chaos as humanely possible instead of waiting for the two factions to tear each other apart on their own. Neither of their Republic allies seemed particularily ready to agree wholeheartedly, but as soon as she had allegedly threatened to do it on both sides herself, the Barsen'thor quickly made her choice.

Stars it was odd to have had such an out of body experience. Having done things that other people clearly remembered, but something she had no recollection of ever doing herself. To say the least, when she did eventually reach the Imperial bunker, the body count had grown astronomical. There was no one to report to the leader (later she discovered it was a Sith Lord she had convinced) and he fell to her plans rather quickly.

But, when she moved onto the Republic bunker to cause a bit more chaos, it was evident her rage was beginning to wane. The Captain was on edge, and even more when a few warning shots made their way to nearly taking her out if she hadn't been focusing properly. Those few were deflected readily and back into the chests of some surrounding soldiers. If it hadn't been evident to the Captain before, she meant business. She had demanded where Revan was, and had apparently force choked the man while he was being particularily stupid by not outright answering her.

"The...valley...stronghold," He gasps for air as she tightens her grasp on his windpipe, finally complying with her request for information, "It's-It's where....they took Theron..Shan."

Theron.

He falls to the ground in a heap, wheezing as he gasps for air as her anger finally disappates into fueled determination, "And what did they do with him?"

"I-I don't know." He breathes, picking himself up a healthy ways away from her and her still-lit lightsaber, "That's all I know, I swear. I know the Imperial forces are headed this way to try and kill us though, a Jedi just came through to warn us."

His hand gets a little too close to his discarded blaster. Though, before he can even draw his blaster, she throws her blade in a wide arc, and he barely lifts the weapon high enough to fire when the red blade slices him in half on the return trip to her hand. He dies, collapses for real this time as his blood pools beneath him on the floor. It's satisfying if she's being truly honest, and she can see a singular living survivor hiding just behind the holoprojector. Bloodlust sated for the moment, she sheathes her weapon, "I don't intend to kill you. If there are more of you hiding within the bunker, I'm not here for you."

One pair of Mirialan lavender eyes pop out from behind the projector. Mistake number one, and from their demeanor as they stand and shakily reholster their holdout blaster, they hold eye contact with her before running further into the bunker. Mistake number two.

But she really isn't here for them. Nothing could be further from her true objective here in the heart of Republic operations. If the Barsen'thor had done her job properly, then the Revanite camps would be destroyed in the next few days once all the inevitable mistrust rose to the surface. Stepping closer to the projector herself, she tries to make sense of the map. Tri'ama can see where the camp is, and makes a mental note of every other base present in the dim blue light. The stronghold that the Captain had told her about was a few klicks the opposite direction, and her heart skips a beat. Once, for just thinking about what wrath she could unleash on the Republic and Imperial soldiers alike for taking her teammate, but again because it's Theron. She was going to get him back.

This is for the good of the Empire, the Republic and the galaxy. Her first thought is that Theron is an ex-SIS agent first and foremost. He sympathizes with his home faction first. He'll be grateful for his rescue, especially from those who surely destroy every living being within that base, but most likely would work with Naji first to warn the Republic. She and Lana would be responsible for the Imperial side of rallying forces.

At the end of the day, they were still technically enemies, just working towards a similar goal. The Revanites never changed that. She flew the red and black, he flew blue and white. She was the Empire's Wrath, he was the Grandmaster's son. The Sith and the SIS Agent.

They were about as opposite as you could get.

What did that botched outing mean to him anyways? Her thoughts are racing as she downloads the map onto her holocom, the jacket, the almost shooting a man for touching her like that?

Does his heart skip a beat everytime her name is mentioned? Does he try to act more confident when she's around?

The friendly banter he and Naji had when they were working alongside each other, the disposition was always kind, if not also rather protective. Of course, she was one of the most powerful Jedi alive, no wonder they would be close.

The download had been complete for sometime, and something cracks in the holoprojector just as she has that thought, sparks flying as she covers her face with her arms for protection. It takes a bit for it to calm down enough for her stand as if she hadn't nearly fallen to a piece of machinery, and she frowns. Was Naji interested in Theron? Jedi didn't marry, much less have romantical ties (as far as she was concerned), but being so far away from the Jedi for so long, something must've given.

Her holocom rings, and she begrudgingly picks up. The Barsen'thor's lithe frame appears, "Did you finish with the Republic? The Imperials are rather upset with my presence-" A blaster shot in the background, "Zenith and I are headed back to the Rishii village, and the Imperials are beginning to rally in the valley. I suggest getting out of there before you get caught in the crossfire."

"Don't tell me what to do." Tri'ama barks back, and the Barsen'thor raises an eyebrow. In all seriousness, she didn't deserve to be yelled at. Nothing was official between Tri'ama and Theron anyways, and Naji seemed like the kind of person to stay quiet for just about everything anyways. They wouldn't stay up late at night and scour through reports and stay together until they couldn't keep their eyes open...

Gah! With that criteria, she wouldn't even be able to trust Lana!

Well, it wasn't as if she could right now anyways.

"Well...", Naji clears her voice as she looks back towards the holocom in mock indifference (she had zoned out), "I'm heading back. It's inevitable, but try not to kill too many of my people. It seems yours are ready for a war, try not to add to the casualties." her voice softens as she pleads with the Sith.

"No promises." Tri'ama answers. The other woman offers her a weak farewell, and just like that, she's left in the darkness of the sparking holoprojector.

What does she want?

Does she even know anymore?

Revving the engine of her speeder bike and riding back through the jungle, she can't even focus on the way back until she's lost, wholely and truly lost. She's frustrated, with Naji for being the perfect Jedi, the perfect woman. With Lana, for seeming so kind but then doing a 180 and letting Theron be captured. With Theron, for being such an alluring prize that she can't even have.

With herself, for letting herself fall so hard, and so fast.

"I wish to forever be your loyal servant." That voice pops into her heads, unnecessary and unwanted, "If you will have me."

Snapping her head up from her hands, she makes the realization that this isn't about her holodrama worthy love. It's not about Naji, it's not about Lana and it's sure as hell not about Theron. It's not even about her. There's an insane cult that she's in the midst of that left unchecked, would lay waste to the Republic and Imperial factions. And she can't be defeated just because of one person. She won't be.

Pulling out her holocom, she inputs the directions back to the village and is back on her way, hair flying behind her and eyes narrowed against the wind. Usually she doesn't drive this fast...

Quinn always had something to say about her driving. But she never let him take the reins, not really. It was always her bike, not his. She would drive as fast as she liked.

That should've been how her emotions were as well. But it wasn't, and she paid dearly for it. First it was Ka'el, then Quinn, then Pierce. Now Theron. And she'd killed more people than she could count for every man on that list. Today alone was worthy evidence.

But if she was going down, the Revanites had better believe that she would go down swinging.

The GunCon[a], known as the G-Con in Europe, is a family of gun peripherals designed by Namco for the PlayStation consoles. The original controllers used traditional light gun technology, while newer controllers use LED tracking technology.

Background[edit]

The first GunCon NPC-103 (G-Con 45 in Europe) was bundled with the PlayStation conversion of Time Crisis. To make the gun affordable to consumers, the force feedback feature of the Time Crisis arcade gun was omitted, and an additional fire button was included in lieu of releasing a pedal controller for the game's ducking mechanic.[1] A second version of the GunCon, known as the GunCon 2 NPC-106 (G-Con 2 in Europe), was bundled with the PlayStation 2 conversion of Time Crisis II and Time Crisis 3. Time Crisis 4 came out for the PlayStation 3 bundled with the GunCon 3 NC-109[2][3][4][5] (G-Con 3 in Europe[6]). In Japan, all three GunCon models were also available for sale as a separate accessory outside of a game bundle.

Prior to the GunCon, the Konami Justifier was the first light gun peripheral for the PlayStation and a few games support it. With the exception of the North American localization of Elemental Gearbolt and Maximum Force,[7] games that support the Justifier are not compatible with the GunCon and vice versa. This was because Namco designed the GunCon so that it would only work with Namco games.[8]Electronic Gaming Monthly's Crispin Boyer said that a Namco public relations representative was shocked when he informed him that he'd tried the GunCon with Maximum Force (not a Namco game) and confirmed that it worked.[8]

The GunCon controller (known as G-Con 45 in Europe) uses the cathode ray timing method to determine where the barrel is aimed at on the screen when the trigger is pulled. It features a button below the barrel on either side of the gun (buttons A and B, both performing the same function) for auxiliary in-game control, such as to take cover and reload in Time Crisis. The controller is released in black in Japan, and gray (and eventually, in orange) in both Europe and North America. The controller is compatible with some PlayStation 2 GunCon titles, but is not compatible with PlayStation 3 due to its lack of controller ports. Many games that support it allow the A and B buttons to be swapped, making it comfortable for both right and left-handed players.

GunCon 2 (G-Con 2 in Europe) features a smaller body, as well as a more rounded shape when compared with the original GunCon. The side buttons, A and B, have been moved rearward to a position directly above the trigger. Two new smaller buttons, SELECT and START, have been added to the left side of the shaft. Prominent additions to this second GunCon model is a D-pad at the back of the gun barrel and a C button added at the bottom of the gun handle. let’s go down the list for people whose ‘canon’ is relatively close to the class stories

Awenyth - generally became more DS over time. i played her generally as an LS Jedi with a bit of a temper regarding Imperials, that became a ‘no mercy given for the enemy’ after the C2 finale. this said, i had to diplomacy my way to her yellow eyes, just because a lot of the decisions even in C3 don’t have much to do with Sith or Imperials but rather interactions with other Pubs (going out of your way to save random scientists on Belsavis, frex). After vanilla her decisions go from something like 75%LS to 95% LS just because most of them have nothing whatsoever to do with Sith, and that’s her only real blind spot.

Bryn - DS all the way, but her run was a quite deliberate total-DS run. it was honestly depressing. she is honestly depressing.

Eirn - i don’t know about her actions necessarily but her points have become proportionally more LS over time, primarily because (as i’ve noted elsewhere) impside, things that would earn you DS points pubside are generally neutral and things that earn you DS points impside more often than not are Stupid Evil. she did gain a lot of DS points in SoR, though - making the sith acolytes fight for their lives, threatening arkous and darok, losing her rag with servant one.

nisha - when i started playing her, she was my second consular run - aemilia was a full ls run, so i consciously decided that with nisha, i would play her as being... a little short sighted when it comes to acquiring and restoring lost knowledge (frex, she saved the holocrons on taris...). but... again over time her actions have become more ls, largely i think because the generic nature of the story after vanilla. (iirc i skipped sor on her because she was a dvl toon and i’d already done sor for that legacy on a warrior)

*The Armor of Commander Cullen - A Reference Diagram*

I've seen some posts in various places mentioning the difficulty in understanding how on earth Commander Cullen's armor works in Inquisition. I recently posted a labeled screenshot to help assist with proper term usage, but then I thought it might be even more helpful to actually diagram out how I, personally, see it functioning. If you are interested in how I think about it, read on! We don't get to see a whole lot of the armor itself because it's covered up with a lot of cloth, so I've done quite a bit of artistic interpretation of how things look underneath Cullen's vest and coat. This diagram is just me extending the basic armor idea we're already given and adding what bits I know about medieval armor to achieve some sort of logical conclusion. What follows is an in-depth examination of the labeled parts in the diagram, which I couldn't include on the picture itself. Feel free to download this to use as a reference for your art or fanfics, but please do not upload it anywhere yourself or claim it as your own. * Red arrows indicate movement direction for articulation. * Purple lines indicate what I've interpreted artistically, either for what we don't see, how things are supposed to attach, or both. ---------------------------------------------- Vambraces and Couters This is his forearm armor. The couter (A) protects his elbow and, as far as I can tell, is supposed to connect with the top of the vambrace (C), because there is no other method of attachment visible. In my opinion, the couter should be hinged where it attaches so that it can move with the elbow. It could remain stationary, but it would dig into the back of his upper arm if he ever straightened his arm all the way out, which works against the concept that armor should be as mobile as possible. (B) depicts the inside of the couter as I imagine it. At the wrist-end of the vambrace are some plates to protect the back of the hand. These, too, should be articulated to move with the hand; again, certain movements, like putting the hands flat on a desk surface as Cullen is wont to do, would cause the plates to dig into the knuckles if they weren't mobile, so articulation is the best bet. The underside of the vambrace is shown in (D). That's pretty much how it looks in-game, but that leaves no method of actually putting it on. Thus, I added outer hinges to the vambrace so it would clasp together with tiny buckles (or something similar) on the inside forearm for safety purposes (C2). Since the vambrace is already "closed" in-game, it would be difficult to concept out larger buckles and straps without straying from the original design too much. Note that "gauntlets" are actually his gloves, and are probably fairly short in length, hence why they appear to be the same as his sleeves; the vambrace hides the openings. Spaulders Also called "pauldrons," these function as shoulder protection. (A) is a simple side view of each set. They consist of three plates each, one on top and two underneath. Again, these would need to be articulated to move with the arm. If you're wondering why the extra guard plate is on Cullen's left side, keep in mind that's the shield side and would (one assumes) help deflect blows if a shield were not handy due to two-handed weapon use or some other reason. Unfortunately, as is evident from the frontal view (B), there is no obvious method of attachment for these pieces. Most of the area that would involve any attachments is covered up by his fur collar. So, I concepted out some buckles for the main pieces (clasping together on the rear side of the arm for safety reasons)*, and some ties for the smaller pieces. I headcanon that the leather sleeves we see in the game are part of an arming outfit, and these outfits would have easy attachment methods for plate armor, including leather ties to hold things down. *One could also make the argument that the upper plates attach to the gorget; see the next section. Cuirass and Gorget The torso armor. This is where things get a little tricky. I'm fairly certain that the gorget (throat armor) here is the entire upper portion (A) of the cuirass, ending at the seam where the straps start. Because the neck opening of the gorget is so large, and there are no obvious seams for hinges or clasps, I'm assuming that it goes on over his head. If that's the case, it would go on top of the rest of the breastplate and backplate (B), which is divided into two more segments. The three segments, just like the articulated plates mentioned earlier, allow for more movement of the torso. Cullen has a habit of bending over tables, and this would be pretty uncomfortable if the breastplate was one solid piece. Of course, these pieces need to be held together somehow. This is partially where the straps we see come in. It would be entirely logical to assume that the buckles and straps on the front of the cuirass are designed to hold the gorget down (they wouldn't have to attach to the third segment as I have depicted...the second would suffice - especially if you wanted the third piece, the plackart, to overlap upwards instead of downwards as I have it here). See the back view for an idea of how it might connect to the backplate (C). I've included a possible side seam on the right for attachment if you think that the whole thing might be hinged on the left and opened on the right to get into and out of (B2). There's also a possibility that the cuirass has seams on both sides and, consequently, is buckled together on both. Ultimately, this is the most difficult portion of the armor to reason out, with a multitude of possibilities regarding how it functions. Just keep in mind that it needs to be both mobile and easy to don and remove. I've included the vest, belt, and sash in color to indicate where they go in relation to the armor. Mantle This is just how I see his fur-lined coat thing. I firmly believe it's a separate piece from the vest underneath, judging from the way it appears in the game. It looks to be just a decorative cape, more or less. Boots OK, I'll admit I have no idea what's going on here. I've "separated" the metal bits and straps (B) from the actual boot (A) so you get an idea of how I think it would attach. It just looks like some sort of minor protection and reinforcement for an otherwise not-very-protective boot. The disk on the knee might be a poleyn of some sort, but it looks like it would be better described as a kind of knee-pad to protect the joint when kneeling down in the dirt or something... Do note that the boots lace up in the back, which is likely for a very good reason: you don't want stray downward slashes in combat severing your laces and making your boot come off. ---------------------------------------------- This is just my own interpretation of how I see Cullen's armor working. Ensuring feedwater pump reliability through proactive site performance testing

Technical Paper by Chris Muscavage, Field Technical Service Engineer, at Sulzer. He looks at the importance of pump performance testing and how it can improve plant reliability. Feedwater pumps are the heart of any steam generation process and as such, they are considered critical assets. When viewed from the cardiologic perspective, feedwater pump criticality becomes patently obvious, without a healthy, reliable heart, the process will degrade and eventually cease to function. Just as an electro-cardiogram provides a medical expert with valuable performance data on the human heart during a stress test, field pump performance testing provides the expert with developed head, capacity and efficiency data under normal (or abnormal) operating conditions. Fossil fuels continue to be the primary source fuel for power generation which, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration in 2017, accounted for 62.7 % of capacity with nuclear capacity accounting for an additional 20%. This equates to nearly 83 % of U.S. power being wholly or partially reliant upon steam generation utilizing feedwater pumps. Deregulation has given rise to an open market where pump “design point” and actual “operating point” may no longer be equivalent and may vary significantly. Such market-driven conditions primarily affect combined-cycle, coal, and biomass-fueled generators during Independent System Operator (ISO) dispatch control. Where is my pump operating? Which pump should take overhaul priority? These are certainly valid questions regarding asset availability, reliability and the associated financial consequences of “abnormal operation”. Where is my pump operating? In the following example, one boiler feedwater pump (BFP) was selected from a group of eight where proactive field performance testing was accomplished. Performance testing was employed to provide the owner/operator with quantifiable pump condition data to aid in prioritizing unit overhaul schedules. This particular generation facility is configured with six separate combined-cycle units employing 12 feed water pumps. The example pump is one of eight axial-split, multi-stage, ring-section pumps. At the time of field performance testing, gross facility generation was limited by ISO dispatch to 60 percent of full generator / heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) load.

Figure 1: Pump actual operating point, flow limited to 58% of design point. Figure 1 shows pump hydraulic performance “as found”. Note how far to the left of best efficiency point (BEP), shown in blue, test results, shown in red, fall on the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) test curve. Critical pump operation is expected to fall within 70-120% of BEP. In this case, although test results fall directly on the test curve indicating satisfactory performance, subject pump hydraulic results show operation at 58% of BEP. This is a surprisingly common situation in the current generation market. In addition, in cases where the pump’s NPSHr curve rises with a reduction in capacity, the NPSHa may be insufficient to overcome the on-set of cavitation. Operation at lower than recommended BEP flows can result in pump inlet flow recirculation leading to increased vibration, wear and reduction in mean-time-between-repairs (MTBR). Which pump should take overhaul priority? Example 2 considers the same group of eight pumps as considered in example one. By prioritizing time-based overhaul scheduling founded on actual unit performance, the owner/operator can maximize unit reliability and availability.

Figure 2: BFP C1 – Hydraulic results indicating increased clearances. Figure 2 shows boiler feedwater pump (BFP) C1 hydraulic performance results which are indicative of degraded or less than optimal internal clearances. Note that results fall below the OEM test curve indicating unsatisfactory performance and that flow capacity is limited to 51% of BEP. Balance line leak-off rate is an excellent and well-documented indicator of internal wear. Figure 3 graphically tabulates leak-off rates of the eight subject pumps and, as expected, the largest flow rate recorded was at BFP C1.

Figure 3: Balance Line Leak off Comparison Pump mechanical integrity is also evaluated in addition to hydraulic testing with real-time vibration data being captured and analyzed. BFP C1 vibration response showed clear indication recirculation at the suction side and BFP C2 exhibited similar response to a lesser degree. Vibration data were consistent with pump hydraulic results and leak-off rates. The facility prioritized overhaul scheduling accordingly. Further mechanical evaluation is accomplished using infrared thermal imaging, visual inspection of pump, seals, lube oil system, coolers, baseplate, foundation, and grouting. In taking this comprehensive approach to pump performance testing from both the hydraulic and mechanical perspectives, an experienced field engineer is able to then provide the end user with detailed analyses and recommendations relative to in-service pump performance. Field performance testing of critical feedwater pumps provides the owner/operator with quantifiable results and recommendations for their pump(s) in service at plant generation conditions. Proactive periodic testing raises the reliability bar another notch by establishing a benchmark for comparison which removes any question of pump condition. With regard to my last post on vocal ranges --- this is my current vocal range. As of today with no warmups or practicing, deliberately going a couple notes out of my comfort zone on either side. Don’t expect good singing, it’s just meant to demonstrate my current vocal qualities, which at this point in no way resemble my old range. I can sometimes go up to two or three (whole) notes below the lowest note I sang here, and up to two (whole) notes above the highest note I sang here (which I sang flat because this is not a day where my high range is any good at all). Yesterday, for instance, I could sing down to the lowest note I sang here with no distortions in my voice, and then two notes lower with the same sorts of mild distortions you heard here, and then roughly the same in the high range. My low range varies more than my high range, in terms of tonal quality, but even my highest low range is much lower than it used to be, and so is my highest high range -- the whole thing has moved down a lot and also shrunk a bit.

As I said before, my highest-quality singing seems to *usually* be around the (using pitch notation with C4 as middle C) E3-E4 range, with usually distortion introduced around D3 and below (varying day to day whether there is any and how much), and with the high range being usually around E5 somewhere, sometimes G5, rarely higher but sometimes A#5ish. Low range *with* distortion (gravelly sounds) can go down around A2, *very* rarely lower, and *without* distortion usually C3 or *barely* lower is the lowest it will go on a “low” day.

(For reference, my previous range was roughly G3 to E6 I think at its widest, and I could literally never hit an F3 to save my life. I got put, in chorus, basically wherever they were short on either altos, second sopranos, or first sopranos, but nobody really analyzed which one exactly I fit best into. The top of my range got lower as I entered early adulthood, but the big changes at the bottom of my range are more recent and unexpected. I’m nearly 37. I have no testosterone issues, but I do have endocrine problems -- pituitary stuff, not sure whether it’s just the total refusal to make ACTH, and therefore cortisol as well or if there’s more than that, but my periods stopped at 28.)

I don’t know if the pitch notation numbers I used in this post are the same as the last post -- I don’t have the last post handy and I can’t remember whether I confused C3 and C4 in that one. But I’m pretty sure I got it right this time. And I’m pretty sure that I’m most consistently a contralto or very low alto, because my actual like “this sounds decent” voice is on the low end of my range rather than the middle or high parts. (And my voice does actually sound much better than this if I sing more regularly. This is just sort of a sample of an average day. And sorry for the parts where I go off-pitch but I was trying to show the edges too.)

ETA: I screwed up with the pitch notation so I just corrected that -- it used to say my original range was G3 to E5, I meant G3 to E6. Counting isn’t my strong suit. Also it was more like the bottom note was somewhere between G3 and A3 varying a little, but not varying anywhere near as much as I do now in the bottom ranges, and I remember being totally unable to hit F3 or F#3 ever. And it went pretty much from my best bottom note to nothing, there wasn’t this intermediate distorted phase I have now. Sort of like in the high range now I just sing flat rather than hit notes I can’t hit, and there isn’t really a thing in between other than maybe one note I can squeak but not sing. So my top range is still “last good note -> nothing” while my bottom range is “last good note -> slight distortion -> major distortion -> nothing” and the location of the last good note changes regularly but pretty much never goes above E3 or below B2. (It used to be the exact opposite, actually -- I had more “wiggle room” at the high end than the low end.) Last good note is the one I can still consistently sing without (or with very very minimal on a really bad day maybe) straining or distortion. Changes daily on the bottom end and sometimes on the top end too, but generally in each stays within certain probability ranges.

ETA ETA: I also screwed up saying C2 was the usual bottom of my “good note” range at its lowest days, when it’s really C3. I’m a contralto (as far as I can tell), not a bass. If you see other weird errors on this, it’s entirely my counting problems, I get lost with all these letters and numbers but I know all the notes in my head.

This is so cool and interesting!

I could only add that one trend I've noticed in both campaigns regarding the sitting arrangements and the relationships that come out of them is:

More physical contact seems to translate to the strongest in-game friendships: Vax/Vex, Pike/Grog, Keyleth/Percy, Nott/Caleb (ish because of the corner arrangements), Molly/Yasha, Nott/Jester, Beau/Caleb, Beau/Fjord. Most notably, the ability to casually interact with each other reflects those bonds: Caleb always holding on to Beau, Jester hugging Nott and Clay, Vax and Vex messing with each other, Keyleth and Percy cuddles...

Eye contact seems to be a conduit for romantic potential. I mean, it could be a coincidence, but it's worth noting that all of the C1 ships were sitting on opposite tables and therefore got to react more directly to each other's expressions and more nuanced feelings and reactions. For C2, we have Beau/Yasha, Clay/Caleb, Molly/Caleb, Jester/EverySinglePersonOnTopTable. Travis has mentioned in talks how it's hard for him to keep Laura's romance advancements at bay when he's seeing her cry and act her heart out during emotional scenes, which she also did in C1 but he didn't get the brunt of because he sat by her side as opposed to, say, Percy.

I just thought those were interesting in the way they seemed to carry from one campaign to the other and what they might say about how people (or at least the cast) express different kinds of affection and what it says about the value of body and eye contact respectively in the creation of stronger bonds between people.

I don’t have the time, nor the spatial awareness* to achieve it, but someone could do a really interesting analysis of how Critical Role character relationships might have been influenced or encouraged by the player seating arrangements.

*the C1 “top table,” in relation to Matt, sits where the C2 “bottom table” is, and if I spend too long thinking about that and trying to compare them, my brain hurts.

In-depth: French experimental SMGs

Even before World War II, the French Army had experimented with military submachine guns. The French were perhaps more forward-thinking than the British Army in this regard. Both the French and the British had been offered the Thompson and both turned it down, but whereas the British Army dismissed the idea of submachine guns completely, the French began work on their own design called the MAS 35. It was chambered in 7.65x20mm. The prototypes were very basic and had simple tubular butt stocks with flat plates acting as shoulder pieces. The design was not adopted but instead improved upon as the MAS 38. The MAS 38 was unique in that the bolt actually traveled back into the stock at a tilted angle. The internal workings were very complicated and I will spare readers a full explanation.

The MAS 38. Designed at Saint-Étienne and chambered in 7.65mm. This was the standard French submachine gun in World War II.

Despite its unorthodox design, the MAS 38 was adopted as the standard French issue submachine gun. The low-powered cartridge meant that recoil was low and accuracy was good. The weapon was used throughout World War II by both the Free French and the Vichy regime, and would also be used post-war in France’s subsequent conflicts.

After the war it became apparent that submachine guns were more effective than most European militaries had anticipated. The Section Technique de l’Armée (the French equivalent of the Ordnance Board) commissioned the small arms factories at Châtellerault (MAC) and Saint-Étienne (MAS) to develop a new submachine gun in 9x19mm. STA felt that the 7.65mm cartridge was not powerful enough and opted for 9mm since almost every other European country had adopted it.

MAC developed their first prototype in 1947. It had a hinged magazine housing that would fold under the barrel. The magazines used were that of the MP-40. Internally, the return spring was actually located near the trigger mechanism and had a torsion action to it. The end of the spring was attached to a lever that came from a recess from within the bolt. When the bolt flew back, the return spring twisted and tightened.

The MAC 47. Despite a superficial resemblance to the Sten, it was internally nothing alike. The hinged lever underneath the trigger cocked the weapon.

The cocking system was also unusual. There was a lever that folded under the trigger on a hinge. Turning it downwards would cock the weapon. The folding buttstock was made of sheet metal and was considered very unergonomic because it was too large. The return spring system also lost tension after extended use. Another version of this prototype was made that had a wireframe stock and a perforated barrel jacket. The stock folded across the side of the weapon and a brace that ran across the middle of it would deliberately block the open ejection port to prevent it from being discharged in this configuration.

In 1948, MAC produced a new design. It had a cylindrical body and the internal action was based on the Sten gun, but with left-hand cocking. The magazine well was very long and doubled as a fore grip. MP-40 magazines were used. The safety was in the pistol grip and, rather unusually, the stock protruded from the bottom of the grip. Fixed to the side of the stock was a hinged steel plate that was designed for the firer to rest their right elbow on whilst firing from the hip. There was no fire selector on the initial prototypes but subsequent models had two triggers for automatic and semi-automatic fire. Ultimately the weapon was not all that accurate.

MAC produced a lightweight version of this weapon which was made almost exclusively from pressed steel. The wooden stock was replaced with a basic “tromboning” stock which was a simple retracting wireframe. This version was known as the SL and was produced in limited quantities. Those that were made were issued to French troops in Indo-China (now South-East Asia).

The MAC 48. The unusual stock did not align well with the bore and made aiming difficult. When fired from the hip, it was decent.

Meanwhile Saint-Étienne produced a series of prototypes called the C1, the C2, the C3, and the C4. They were all basically derived the same design and differed only in very minor ways. Development started in 1947 and by 1948, the final version known as the C4 had been produced. The action was very similar to the later H&K G3. It had a two-part, L-shaped bolt that ran through a tube over the barrel. The firing pin was fixed to the vertical arm of the bolt. Fitted underneath the long horizontal arm of the bolt, and in front of the shorter vertical arm, was a light bolt head, which was attached to a rotating lever. One end of the lever touched the bolt body and the other end sat in a recess in the weapon’s frame. When gas pressure was applied, the lever rotated, which accelerated the bolt. There was no conventional fire selector. Instead, the trigger was pressurized to give single shots at a half-pull and automatic fire at a full press.

Neither the MAC nor the MAS designs were adopted by the French Army and instead the MAT-49 was chosen.

The MAT 49. This was the weapon that was adopted by the French Army. It saw use in Algeria and Indo-China.

Other post-war French designs included the Gevarm D3, produced by ammunition firm Gevelot. It was a very basic Sten clone with a wooden stock and was never manufactured in any quantity. More interesting was the PM-9 produced by Societe Pour l’Exploration des Brevets MGD in 1954. The PM-9 was a very compact folding submachine gun. It is very hard to describe the internal action of the weapon. The bolt was a sort of rod that was connected to a flywheel on the rear end and the front end was connected to a crank that revolved 180 degrees when the bolt moved forward. When it reached the end of its travel, it returned 180 degrees in the opposite direction, upon which the next round would be chambered. When this happened, the flywheel on the rear end of the bolt would oscillate, cocking the weapon, which would then cause a spiral spring to tension and the move the bolt forward again. Very interestingly, the weapon′s fire rate could be changed by adjusting the tension of the spring.

The Gevarm D4 by Gevelot. This version had a retracting stock whereas the D3 had a fixed stock. Not many were made.

The PM-9 produced by MGD and later Erma. The high cost and complex mechanism ensured that it was a commercial failure.

The folded PM-9. In this configuration it was incredibly compact.

The PM-9 design was sold to Erma Werke in Germany in 1955. Erma had difficulty selling the weapon so they instead used its production as a training exercise for young employees. Each unit cost about $150 so production ceased quickly.

Joe’s Weather World: Sometimes you have to go ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (THU-8/15)

I’m going to tell you a secret that weather folks don’t like to talk about…sometimes they think they know something is going to happen when in reality they have no idea.

Now that that’s out of the bag it goes without saying that I try like heck to get things right day in and day out. Most of us do on a daily basis but sometimes I think it’s OK to just say “hey…I’m not really sure what’s going to happen”. If nobody else will say this (because of pride or whatever) I sure will. On rare occasions the weather can get so complicated and so many things revolve around what happens over a 3-6 hour period that will affect what happens 2-3 days down the road.

Sometimes one of my favorite sayings is to remind people that what we do is try to predict things that don’t exist. That in itself is hard to do and we do it usually pretty well. Not perfect but pretty well most of the time. There are flame-outs for sure and over the next few days the forecast may well be very wrong at times.

Today is a case where I may be very wrong…or I may be very right, at least regarding what I said last night. Then this has ripple effects of what happens tonight…and tomorrow…and over the weekend. I’m glad I’m taking a 3 day weekend…I’ll try and get a blog update out though on Friday morning.

Forecast:

Today: Watching what’s happening in Nebraska this morning. Sunny skies this morning with increasing clouds this afternoon. If the activity holds together up there long enough…we may have some rain locally later this afternoon…after 3PM or so. IF the activity falls appart we may warm up into the upper 80s…if we get rain it may only be in the 80-85° range. Radar is below.

Tonight: What happens later today will influence tonight. IF storms/rain cooled air are around and contaminate the atmosphere then not much may happen tonight at all…IF we do get into the upper 80s today then there could be storms out there tonight…later tonight into Friday AM. Lows in the 60s. LOW confidence forecast

Friday: Storms are possible early in the AM…then there may not be much around tomorrow. Highs in the 80s. LOW confidence forecast

Saturday and Sunday: Ditto…better chances overnight and early in the AM. Boundaries around the region will need to be watched for additional afternoon/evening storms IF we get unstable and IF there are other parameters coming together. LOW confidence forecast. IF there are storms that linger…temperatures will be cooler during the day.

I hate that…I really do but sometimes around these parts I just don’t have a lot of confidence in one day to another…

The issue today is that we (for now) have a lot of dry air out there around our region…we also have a decent sized area of storms/rain moving through central Nebraska to start the day.

How long will that thing hold together?

The HRRR model this morning brings it through the area this afternoon…

I’m NOT confident in that outcome right now…it may stay more west of KC in the end…sure we may get the clouds in the area after lunch…and there may be some fading showers too…but the HRRR seems pretty gung ho this morning for a system coming into some pretty dry air. I’m also noticing that the bigger storms are getting more rooted on the western side of the complex which may end up dropping SSE into central/north central KS while the eastern side of the complex slowly fades away. Of note as well that whole mess isn’t exactly plunging our way…which means it will typically weaken as the day moves along and it’s still hundreds of miles away.

The RAP model (another short term model) seems to have this thing falling apart in NE KS as it approaches our area this afternoon…this sort of makes sense to me. This model then lays some sort of boundary down near the region…which may focus new storms overnight and again tomorrow and that sort of makes sense to me conceptually at least.

Other models do all sorts of things…the hi res NAM model gives us nothing till early Saturday morning…the lower res NAM gives parts of the KC metro over 5″ of rain…like I said sometimes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

So I’ll keep my thoughts going from last night…better chances overnight into tomorrow AM…then again maybe tomorrow night into Sunday AM.

It does look hotter next week though…strange how sometimes I have more confidence in what happens 4 days from now than I do 8 hours from now. So it goes.

Again be prepared for changing forecasts…the team will do it’s best to be consistent but this is going to be a taxing few days for forecast accuracy.

With ALL of that said…the potential for heavy rains is certainly there, especially starting tonight into Saturday. Don’t cancel your outdoor plans for any day over the weekend right now…confidence in the timing of the storms/rain is just not high enough. The risk of severe storms will also be there too…I’m not too thrilled about today’s set-up but there may be some wind/hail threats later tonight into Friday and again later Friday night into Saturday.

Again even that scenario locally is a bit iffy because IF we do end up with storms later today that would potentially wash out the air around us and prevent new storms overnight from forming…maybe.

Very frustrating at times doing this job…and today is one of the more frustrating days.

Repeated targeting of Middle Eastern financial, energy and government organisations leads FireEye to assess that those sectors are a primary concern of APT34. The use of infrastructure tied to Iranian operations, timing and alignment with the national interests of Iran also lead FireEye to assess that APT34 acts on behalf of the Iranian government. On April 19 2019 researchers at Chronicle, a security company owned by Google’s parent company, Alphabet, have examined the leaked tools, exfiltrated the past week on a Telegram channel, and confirmed that they are indeed the same ones used by the OilRig attackers. OilRig has been connected to a number of intrusions at companies and government agencies across the Middle East and Asia, including technology firms, telecom companies, and even gaming companies. Whoever is leaking the toolset also has been dumping information about the victims OilRig has targeted, as well as data identifying some of the servers the group uses in its attacks.

According to Duo, “OilRig delivered Trojans that use DNS tunneling for command and control in attacks since at least May 2016. Since May 2016, the threat group has introduced new tools using different tunneling protocols to their tool set” Robert Falcone of Palo Alto Networks’ Unit 42 research team wrote in an analysis of the group’s activities.

Today I’d like to focus my attention on the Glimpse project since, in my personal opinion, it could be considered as the “stereotype” of APT34 (with the data we ‘ve got so far).

The Glimpse Project

The package comes with a README file having as a name “Read me.txt” (note the space). The name per se is quite unusual and the content is a simple guide on how to set a nodejs server and a Windows server who would run the “stand alone” .NET (>v4) application to control infected machines. The infection start by propagating a .VBS script called “runner_.vbs” which is a simple runner of a most sophisticated powershell payload. The Powershell payload is a quite complex script acting several functions. The following image shows its “deobfuscated” main loop.

The payload loops waiting for instructions, once a command comes from C2 it starts to perform specific actions and it answers back to C2 by requesting crafted subdomains based on variable $aa_domain_bb. One of the most important functions the payload has implemented is to drop and execute additional toolsets. Indeed this payload is mainly a delivery module with some additional controls entirely based on DNS covert channel.

The $aa_domain_bb variable contains the main domain name for which the C2 acts as authoritative Domain Name Server. While no actions are coming from C2 the infected agent would just periodically “ping” C2 by giving basic informations regarding the victim machines. For example the function aa_ping_response_bb would compose an encoded DNS message ( aa_text_response_bb ) which sends it own last IP address. At this stage we might appreciate two communication ways. DNS Communication channel is developed in linear and more functional driven programming style, while the standalone command and control is developed using a little bit more sophisticated object oriented programming with a flavour of agent-oriented programming: the attacker considers the object agentt as an independent agent working without direct control. The attacker writes files as the medium to address the Agent behaviour.
