We are still waiting on new birth certificates, which is irritating for all the obvious reasons, but particularly because the kids really need new social security numbers (again, obvious reasons).
The kids are doing well overall. There is a degree of calmness now that the adoption has finalized, but perhaps not as much change overall as one would expect. I think the fact that we have already been a family for over half a decade made the transition more seamless (though not enough to outweigh the benefits that earlier permanency would have given the kids).
We have not had a visit since the adoption and the kids have not asked, beyond Greta asking once what the schedule would look like. We have one coming up this winter (provided parents follow through). I am curious to see what happens and dread the impact, but we’ll deal with that.
We get to see Henry a couple times a month. He’s walking all over, but is delayed otherwise. He’s the sweetest. Right now he sleeps over 4-6 nights a month. The kids love having him here and constantly beg for him to live with us for now. I’ve explained his goal and that it isn’t my choice. I hope I’m doing them more good than harm with the prolonged contact. I think I am. We’re taking lots of photos so they will have those as adults; I still think of them hopefully reconnecting one day. Henry was supposed to reunify before Christmas, but things happened and that’s currently on hold.

The emergency
A good number of members within the Justice League have children. Not all of those kids are biological or adopted but they are their kids nonetheless. Some of those kids are even old enough to be adult heroes of their own, but even then they are still their kids. And the other kids tend to take up heroism at a very young age to most people's chagrin. Although as shown by the original child hero, now going by Nightwing, it’s not as easy as telling the kids to stop.
It was learned through intense hardship that smothering the child heroes was just asking for trouble. Despite how much the older heroes wanted to stay close to their kids, it was seen as overbearing and a show of mistrust. They would act out with even less backup in retaliation, which would only bring even more stress.
So to satisfy the need for protection without stepping on any toes, two new emergency meeting signals were introduced.
One was for the kids to send off. Each one was gifted a small device that could be hidden in their person. The device had both a mic and a tracking chip that could be activated when they were in extreme danger. As soon as the device was active a signal would be sent to the league for an emergency distress signal with the details of who sent it. Due to an outcry from the kids, the device could not be activated by the guardian of the child. The mic and locator could only be activated from the device itself. It wasn’t nearly as protective as some of the more worried leaguers would like, but it was at least something.
The second signal was one that the leaguer with a kid in danger could activate. This signal could be activated with a single code into the communicators that every member owned. If the member who sent out the signal didn’t specify what kid was in danger, every member would receive a generalized notification of the emergency alert for one of the kids. This wasn’t ideal, but it was learned early on that the guardian of the child was often too distressed to make the code more complicated. It was best to leave it simple and answer questions at the emergency meeting.
Which was great in all, until someone who doesn’t have a child involved with heroics in their care sends off a general emergency.
In places all over the globe, an emergency meeting signal message was sent by Hal Jordan, one of the lanterns. He didn’t include what child was in danger in the signal, meaning that it could be any of the underaged heroes. And considering he didn’t have a child in his care, that made multiple members panic.
When was the last time they checked in with the kids in their care? Who was the one he was sending the code for? What happened to the child he had noticed was in danger? Why is he the one that noticed? Where were their kids? Who was in danger?
Because of the nebulous nature of the call, it didn’t take long for multiple heroes to find the nearest transport to the watchtower and tumble in. What they didn’t expect was the absolute haggard appearance of their friend. He was standing in the meeting room looking like the world had been destroyed before his very eyes. The way he sat without even cracking a sarcastic remark made multiple members pause.
“Hal?” Wonder Woman called, her face pinched in concern. “What has happened?”
The aforementioned member looked over who had already arrived before settling on her face. It was at that moment she knew that he was only looking so collected through willpower alone. This wasn’t just any child of the league, this was personal.
“My nephew Danny has been captured,” He began, sending a wave of different emotions circling the room. “I’ve been trying to find where they took him for a week now and I can’t get any leads. I need your help.”
The unsaid questions and emotions were nearly palpable. Multiple members turned to one another or stared with a million questions. Nobody had known that Hal even had a nephew named Danny. Sure he mentioned someone named Jason at times, but he never indicated anything else. The fact that he hadn’t mentioned him or the fact that he’d been apparently searching for a week was strange.
“And why are you only telling us now? Why did you wait so long?” Superman asked, speaking up the question that was on multiple minds.
A fire of anger curled in Hal's eyes. It was fierce and protective. It was a mixture of appalment for being questioned on his decision and fury for the reasons why he had to do it in the first place. He stepped forward towards the center table, slamming his palms down and leaning into it.
“Because any person that goes against the group will be declared an enemy of the United States. I’ve already had my account and housing connected to Green Lantern seized,” He explained with a deceptively calm tone. “I also needed to make sure that they didn’t have any connections with the Justice League. They have their agents everywhere.”
Unsurprisingly, Batman appeared from the gathered heroes from seemingly nowhere. Despite the feud between the two of them, the Bat was completely zeroed in on the situation. While he had a decent amount of distrust in the lantern, mainly because of the parallax incident, he could tell that the man was genuine. And the Bat always did have a blind spot for children.
“Explain,” Was all Batman said, staring Hal down.
The lantern in question looked at him with a grim face. This was it. Now or never.
“They’re called the Ghost Investigation Ward, or GIW for short. They hunt down and either exterminate or experiment on anyone they deem ectocontaminated or a ghost,” Hal started to explain, his hand curling on the table in frustration. “My brother Jack faked his death and ran off to be with another woman. Those fucks deemed my nephew as ectocontaminated and tried to take him from his home. He ran from his family so that they couldn’t be arrested for knowingly harboring an ecto entity. Told me that he remembered my face from a photo his dad tried to hide in the attic and sought me out.”
If the fire in his eyes were any stronger, they would probably become physical and burn down the room. It was undeniable that Hal Jordan was understandably completely pissed off. This situation was terrible from down to the very root.
“I tried to hide him but they somehow found him anyway. Now my civilian name is being heavily monitored and Green Lantern is being hunted down,” He finished his explanation. “If you join me in this, be prepared to lose everything.”
This was so much worse than anyone could’ve predicted.

Detail from a Middle Llehian fresco depicting the sea goddess Maare rising the wind from the crimson morning sea, so that the birds may lift the sun to the skies.
Style testing cultural art style for a story project I've rotated for a while. I've posted some character art of that to my Patreon, but I've been planning to slowly start posting the oldest ones here as well. This was originally a ttrpg setting, but since I've made it a setting to rotate and plan without secrecy with my sibling, it doesn't have to be behind the scenes material only anymore.

Jason Todd never gets picked up by social services when Catherine dies. Instead, the alley protects its own.
Jason had spent most of his daytime hours looking after his neighbors kids. He was basically family. They paid him in meals and a shared bed when Willis would kick him out sometimes.
When people hear his Mom died, he couch surfs amongst families with small children that need supervision while their parents are at work. He manages well enough, and he rotates what families he stays with so CPS never catches wind. He’s the alley’s secret amongst working immigrant families.
It also means he knows how to deal with kids.
So when he watches one tumble off a fire escape on the roof opposite where he’s been smoking, he knows he has to check it out. Make sure the kid’s alright.
When he finally gets a good look at him, both his camera and leg are busted.
More convoluted take below the cut!
Tim, who broke his leg actually, is too little to be taking care of himself or get himself home. He needs to be looked after.
He gets the kid to Leslie, lies and says he’s watching him over the weekend and the kids parents will be back Monday, and gets the kid in a cab before figuring out where he lives.
Tim isn’t super aware of what’s going on around him since he was given something for the pain, but he knows there’s someone asking him a lot of questions. When he is more awake, the following morning after waking up on his living room couch, he realizes there’s a kid watching him.
Tim feels like hell and while he appreciates Jason taking him home, he can handle himself.
Jason snorts at him, asks if he’s ever had a broken leg or knows how to use crutches, and what he wants for breakfast.
It takes two days before Tim is willing to admit his parents won’t be home for a few months. They’re lucky school’s out or someone would have noticed Tim’s absence.
Jason becomes Tim’s babysitter, or as much of one as he can be without Tim’s parents finding out. Jason takes care of him the whole time his leg is healing. Tim teaches him to play videogames and Jason reads to him.
When Tim’s finally healed, he wants to go back out at night to chase after Batman. Jason gives him an unimpressed look, but asks if the kid wants to tag along to his babysitting gigs in the alley. He misses some of the little twerps and thinks there’s a few Tim would like.
Tim and Jason become brothers early, going from apartment to apartment looking after other people’s kids. Jason gets someone who follows him around, gives him shit, and is almost as good as wikipedia in a pinch. Tim gets someone who gives a shit about him, a social life full of people who aren’t snotty high society brats, and Jason’s special brand of aggressive caring.
What the two don’t know is that Two Face has been looking for Jason’s dad. No one had been able to rat him out when he was staying with Tim because no one knew where he was.
It takes a while, but when the wrong people figure out where Jason is, it isn’t pretty.
They interrupt him while sitting an overnighter. There’s a loud knock at the door and when Jason checks the peephole, it’s two of his Dad’s old buddies. Jason rounds up the kids, yells “just a minute!”, gives Tim a kitchen knife and tells him to sit tight and lock themselves in one of the bedrooms. Tim doesn’t hear anything after the front door opening and an initial shout. He waits 15 minutes before he’s sure the coast is clear. Then, he rounds the kids up, puts them to bed like Jason does, and heads up to the roof.
He knows Batman’s patrol routes well enough to find him and try to flag him down. Who he actually gets is Robin, who he has to explain to that Two Face took his brother. When Robin finally listens and takes the kid seriously, he radios Batman. Batman, who recognizes the neighbor kid and knows he doesn’t have a brother. By this point Tim is almost in tears of frustration trying to explain that Jason Todd is his brother but Batman also recognizes the missing kid from one of his reports and it’s enough of a corroboration that Tim gets put in the back of the Batmobile while they go to rescue Jason.
He doesn’t get to see any of the fighting and he doesn’t leave the car, but when Robin is half carrying Jason out of the building, Tim leaps out of the car to hug his brother. Jason’s got a few bruised ribs and his face is beat to hell, but it’s all something Leslie can fix.
What Leslie can’t fix is the legal fact that Jason is a missing kid, not Tim’s biological brother. Batman sits with the two, explaining how everything is going to work once they take them to the police.
Three things happen at once:
1. Jason accuses Batman of dropping kids off with traffickers. It’s why he didn’t let CPS pick him up when his Mom died.
2. Robin asks if the two will get to stay together, if they can ask Gordon not to separate them.
3. Tim says they will be doing no such thing, Mr. Wayne.
#batman#bruce wayne#jason todd#dick grayson#tim drake#batfamily#batfam#jason about has a heart attack at tim blackmailing batman#bruce is shocked. dick thinks it’s the funniest thing he’s ever heard. leslie texts alfred to expect trouble#jason has an odd moment when he and alfred first seriously interact outside of introductions where he isn’t sure what to do living here#alfred does the cooking and cleaning and takes care of tim. he feels distinctly quiet in a way his chaotic life hadn’t allowed for#he tries asking alfred for something to do and alfred has to explain it’s an adults job to take care of children. that jason deserves to be#taken care of. dick has to adjust to having two new brothers that already get along without him but both idolize robin#honestly just give me jason todd professional babysitter turned older sibling turned middle sibling#and bruce pretending to take them in under the guise of protection/blackmail but after finding jason beaten to a pulp#and clinging to his “brother” while also trying to put himself between batman and the kid trying to blackmail him#the kids were growing on him. their boldness and care for each other brought a new tone to wayne manor that was sorely missing#tim is equal parts excited to live with his heroes and brother but also wary of his blackmail not working and being separated from jason#originally i just wanted jason to be a babysitter but fuck if i know a less convoluted way for him to get adopted#my drafts on this are all over the place.#i had like 4 different directions this could have gone

God is the system fucked up. it fails so many kids and families and dude I can’t tell you how much it hurts to see these kids going through this.
I am totally using this idea in my next and can’t believe I haven’t thought of foster care sirius before.
Always emotional about foster care kid!Sirius but rn especially about a Sirius in the foster care system who is about to age out of it. All his families failed him and sent him back relatively shortly after starting to take care of him. And he's so used to rejection. His grades are still stellar, but his programm doesn't have enough reach to help him as best they can, and are also a bit over him by that point. Idk there are so many ways to go with this au, but I also love to torture the poor guy
