You know, I've been rewatching s24 of SVU and the really frustrating thing isn't even how they did Joe dirty. Because actually his storyline was very in line with what he told Fin about being the gang's bait, and what he told the whole team when he was trying to track down the trafficked girls from Juarez.

Which honestly just makes the whole thing more frustrating because Fin was giving him just as much of a hard time as Liv, just not quite as directly, and THEY BOTH ALREADY KNEW that he had done shady and criminal shit with the gang in order to survive. They KNEW that was why his mother got their priest to help send him to the U.S. to get him out of it. THEY KNEW what his past was like, and were fine with it.

And now all of a sudden they can't trust him, and he has to "clean up his mess"? Now it's a problem that he understands what that's like and it's what drives him to be a better cop, to make up for what he sees as his wrongs when he was a kid?

I don't get why you and @salvador-daley aren't friends. You're both great people and cores of the fandom, so why don't you talk?

You know what Nonny, I'm going to give you props for bluntness. I have yet to see someone so directly ask. Also I'm flattered that you think I, of all, people am the core of any fandom, especially this one.

That being said, this is a really frustrating question. Why we're not friends is because we're not. There are reasons for it, but frankly they're none of your damn business. That's all there is to it. And I don't foresee that changing any time.

This ask (and ones I've gotten previously on my main blog implying but not stating the same question) feel a bit like when my grandmother used to try and set me up on playdates. "You both played with Barbies in the church basement because you couldn't sit still in the pews, and neither of you was the one that got kicked out for biting people, so why aren't you best friends?"

From what I've observed, we have very little in common, other than a shared amusement in/attraction to the Dancing Monkey that is Robert Sheehan or his characters (the Barbies in the analogy). We have different other interests, different friend circles. Different...tastes. You can sit us down on a weird smelly carpet surrounded by yellow walls and make us wait for you to be done listening to sermons and hymns for three hours every week, but you cannot make us go to the beach together after.

I'm tired of being asked this. It feels like I'm not allowed to make my own choices about who I want to associate with. And that makes me feel like garbage.

Start of the year post!

So, I couldn't make an end of the year post because I was seeing in the year the way I see in everyday, stoned as fuck.

But I'd like to wish you all a Happy New Year!

But there are two massive thank yous that I need to give to the two people that have been there through everything last year had to throw at me.

Firstly, to @misskittysmagicportal, she is the Honey to my Leon, which to me is a very means a he'll of a lot and I hope that sticks for a very long time. She was the Honey to my Leon before I even knew who the character of Leon was and the comparison between us was made, funnily enough, it was Kat who introduced me to him. I can't thank Kat enough for listening to me bitch, whine, rant and sometimes just take in the absolute bollocks that are the ramblings of a stoner. And of course, for being so patient and understanding when I've fallen behind on reading her fics which everyone knows I adore because real life got a little too overwhelming. I couldn't have asked for a better "partner in crime" and I hate to break it to you but you're pretty much stuck with me at this point! I genuinely cannot put into words how much I appreciate Kat's friendship.

Secondly, to @magic-multicolored-miracle, again I can't put into words how much I appreciate Shye's friendship. They're always one of the first people to throw in a kind word when I post one of my many selfies or outfit choices that half of you don't want to see. They're also one of the first people to offer words of reassurance (or murder threats) if I'm feeling down/worried about something or someone has upset (trust me, those murder threats are greatly appreciated), Shye and I don't talk very often, not as frequently as me and Kat at least. But there's never any awkwardness when one of us does strike up a conversation, it just falls into place which I'm thankful for!

Basically, what I'm saying is, I'm not the easiest person to be friends with. I'm forgetful, bitchy, stoned a lot of the time, I can be mean and upsetting without realising it. And I will forever be thankful for these two wonderful people for accepting me for me last year and sticking by me through thick and thin because fuck knows how I would have made it through without either of you.

So the happiest of new years to you both, I hope our friendship remains as strong and only gets stronger through this next year, and I hope this year goes a lot better than the last!

Once again regretting reading an article about film fashion because of course there is someone complaining about how awful and horrible and the worst thing ever a corset is and how it's obviously a torture device and no one should wear them, even if it is the most appropriate for the period.

Honey no.

You're not having that discomfort because of corsets in general. You're having it because a) you haven't been properly fit for one and/or b) you haven't been taught how to wear one. And I am sorry that your costumer has failed you that way, but it's not the corset's fault.

If I can wear a corset that shrinks my waist by up to 4-6" for 8 hours in the sun and do things like bend down to collect arrows off the ground, run around in a fight, and climb a fucking deer path/hike without discomfort, you should be able to film Beauty and the Beast or Bridgerton or whatever period/fantasy piece it happens to be. It's the same problem as handing someone who's never worn high heels a day in their life a pair of 6" stilettos and telling them to figure it out. Or men in armor without proper fitting or padding. Anything worn improperly can cause injury, and if you're on a million dollar production they should be giving you the fitting and direction that you need. If you can't teach it, hire a rennie or larper or reenactor and be better.

Anyway, I'm enraged. So it's time to say goodnight internet and go play some games.

Listen, I understand that "they changed it, now it sucks" is the battle cry of the internet.

But if you're writing an listicle about why a tv show is bad compared to its source books... (I am going to write a counter-list of the issues with common complaints but it's too long, so now it's under a cut. The short version is "you need to remember it's a different type of storytelling, you're boring, and I hate you.")

1) If you complain about storylines being cut or changed, or potentially being cut that are about rape and/or incest...you're gross. And creepy. And I don't trust you or your opinions on anything.

2) If your complaints are about character changes are that they are more outwardly ambitious instead of secretive and scheming, consider the fact that books have the ability to portray internal thought processes and decision-making, tv has to show it visually and ideally without weird omniscient narration. So a character may be doing the same scheming, it just looks bolder/less secretive. Also if you have 80 characters who are all scheming schemers who quadruple-cross each other, it gets confusing and hard to follow, even in a book. In a show with limited time, plotlines get streamlined and some of those 80 characters stop playing the long game.

3) If you complain that characters are less sure, somber, level-headed, strategic etc. than their book counterparts, consider again that the tv can't show their internal thoughts, so being outwardly expressive suits the medium. Also, many of these characters are starting at different points of their story, and character growth is interesting and relatable. Also also, a show full of just somber, cold, strategic men and level-headed self-assured women is frankly Boring. (A book is too, but at least with internal reflection you can add more depth and variety so it isn't unsalvageable.)

4) If you complain about secondary characters being cut or having their storylines given to others, think about the practicality of scripting, casting, filming all of those side things, who never appear again. It's not practical. TV shows have a limited time, audiences have a limited attention span.

5) If you are upset about storylines being changed or replaced by entirely new ones, ask yourself "was the original one convoluted, difficult to follow, nearly identical to another storyline, or only tangentially connected to the main characters and plot?" if the answer is yes, there's a good reason for it getting altered. Cohesion and focus are essential to storytelling, especially when you have a limited amount of time and resources to work with. Unfortunately, most shows are not syndicated daytime tv soap operas that run for 40 years and can tell an evil twin, amnesia, or surprise return from the dead story every three seasons (I'm being generous to say they wait that long).

i want to write, but ive seen so many of my favourite writers get hate and it scares me. you seem so unbothered when you get stuff like that. how do you deal?

So, I've been debating most of the weekend on how to answer this. I am not a good person to ask for advice here.

Because a good way to handle it is not the same as how I handle it. I kind of do the opposite of what a lot of people say you should do when you get anon hate. Because there is only room for one petty bitch in this house, so it's going to be me.

So a good way to handle it is with liberal application of the block button, and remembering that they mean nothing. Every anon that sends hate is a sad, sad soul who's taking out their own insecurities and problems on you because they can hide behind a grey face and think that making someone else feel bad is going to make their life somehow suck less. And odds are there are a lot more people that like you and your work then don't (especially once you've been writing for a little while. Even if they don't say anything. Which you'll often wish they would because you need them and can only guess they're really there).

My way of handling it is to be as sarcastic and rude as possible and try to have the last word. I'm a creature born of and powered by spite and have spent far too many years trying to cater to exactly the kind of person that is the average Hate Anon, so I decided I'm done with that shit. My goal is to out asshole the anon. 

I'm not going to lie though. It hurts. It sucks ass. And every one of those hate messages hits its mark. I've cried. I've doubted myself. I've been heartbroken. I've thought about giving up. At least one and often all of those things, Every. Single. Time. And I know there are a lot of creators out there that feel the same. I'd like to say there will be people on your side to remind you that the anon is full of shit, and most of the time there are, but not always. Or if they're there you have to find/reach out to them first. And it's rough. It feels bad and wrong.

I don't want to discourage you, Nonny. Because writing is exhilarating and addictive and healing and fun. It can be so many wonderful things. And if you're really, really lucky it will bring you to a community of friends whom you love and are loved by, heart and soul. But good times bring bad, and nothing's sunshine and roses all the time.

If you do decide to write, I'm happy to be here for advice/support and either way for friendship if you want. Hell, I'm usually here to throw down with shitty people too, mine or someone else's.

3. What is the best fandom you’ve ever been involved in?

Honestly, The Witcher (or at least the little bubble of fandom where I have found myself). The friends I’ve made in that fandom are some of the nicest and most creative, supportive, wonderful people I have ever known. Being a part of it and being welcomed so warmly into it the way I was really reignited a spark for me that I didn’t even realize had gone out when I was just passively passing through fandoms and occasionally shitposting. 

I could go on for ages, but I’ll spare y’all the sap-fest.

4. Do you regret getting involved in any fandoms?

No. 

There are one or two where I wish I had been involved differently, or walked away at different point (always remember folks, if you’re uncomfortable it’s okay to leave the party, or step outside for some air) but even those I learned and gained things from that I wouldn’t want to give up.

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

Reading: Two am. Baby nugget Shye has just finished watching Doomsday on some sketch as hell streaming site. She’s crying over Rose and the Doctor. Trying to figure out if that was really the end of Rose, she googles which leads to youtube. One of the videos is a “trailer” where they get married and live happily ever after or something and in the description there’s a link to fanfiction.net. And the rest is lost to time immemorial (because the video no longer exists and I remember no details from the fic). 

Writing: I honestly don’t know. Every kid plays make believe that they’re part of their favorite show or movie or book right? Somewhere along the line I just started writing those make believe adventures down. And then it grew from there. 

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

Negative critiques that basically amount to “I don’t like the way you wrote this and it should have been done this way instead.” Like that’s fine bro, I don’t agree with everything I read either. But I don’t take that out on the person who is trying their best and is probably really happy with the thing they made (since people almost never share creative works that they are unhappy with). If you don’t like how something was done, and think you could do it better, then go ahead and write it that way yourself, but don’t be a dick. 

I especially hate it from anons, because it means that you’re too chickenshit to put your money where your mouth is.
