Favorites : Battle Royale (2000)

At times, a film comes along, and you wonder how it’s possible that the entire world isn’t wholly familiar with it.  A film that is perfect for the times, and it manages to handle the delicate balance between social criticism and engrossing storytelling.  A film that, regardless of whether it’s admitted or not, is a direct influence on many films that follow.  In my opinion, a classic example of this kind of film is 2000′s Battle Royale.

This film tells the dystopian tale amazingly well with minimal tools.  Overall there are about 4 locations (albeit 1 is extremely expansive), but it’s rare to be able to tell such a bleak tale without the trappings of science fiction or special effects.  This film instead relies on s simple, high stakes narrative, raises the ante by replacing the standard participants of this scenario with children, and then proceeds to pull no punches along the way.

The final film from Japanese director Kinji Fukasaku, this is definitely the kind of final statement that puts great directors into the status of legend.  The movie is paced briskly, but the main storyline is not rushed.  Even with a number of supporting stories existing, none distract, and most all provide context for character decisions (the way flashbacks were intended to be used).

The cast is something to behold.  Standouts include Takeshi Kitano as Kitano, Tatsuya Fujiwara as Shuya Nanahara, Masanobu Ando as complete rock star and badass Kazuo Kiriyama and Chiaki Kuriyama as Takako Chigusa.  Kou Shibasaki becomes a standout among the villians as Mitsuko Souma.  Yûko Miyamura is extremely entertaining as the Training Video Girl, and Eri Ishikawa makes the most of her limited screen time as Yukie Utsumi.

The movie is somewhat violent, and yet it somehow manages not to come off as gratuitously so.  The violence is used to increase the tension and raise the stakes more than shock.  The matter-of-fact presentation only increases the sense of callousness... the film has echoes of projects like Punishment Park.  The lighthouse sequence alone makes this film worth seeing.

The influence of Battle Royale cannot be denied.  Films like The Hunger Games and The Belko Experiment are definitely built on the framework laid by Battle Royale.

I thought I should keep you all updated on Shuya's condition... He's woken up! He's doing much better today, thankfully, and it doesn't look like what happened to him will be fatal. I couldn't be happier with this news– I'm incredibly grateful that @days-of-emi and @tatsumichi-oki found him in time. Thank you both so much for helping him.

Unfortunately, the doctors were right about his memory loss, and I'm still unsure about how severe it is... I think the best thing right now is to avoid any stress while he's recovering.

But, thank you all so much for your well wishes! They're deeply appreciated.

Career Fair - Let’s look toward our future!

After the very dramatic few days, I hope everyone will be able to regroup and attend Career Fair! As you all know, next year, we will be in our senior year of high school and, thus, will mark the beginning of the college admission process! This will be a crucial time and important decisions will have to be made regarding each and everyone of us’s future! However, to make a good and informed decision, you need all informations in hands! This is why I set up this Career Fair that will be taking place today througout the school! Different conferences, presentations and panels will be taking place! We will be honoured by the presence of professionals, college students and different prestigious universities’ admissions’ officers. All these sucessful people will share their experience, insight and wisdom to answer your questions about their career, their field of studies or the process of college admission! Some people will also be delighted that, in keeping with the very professional spirit of the day, the school has agreed to not impose the uniform today. If you so decide, you can go to school dressed in a business casual way!

I was tagged by no one but I just like doing these!🖤

1) Are you named after anyone?  No, not as far as I know!

2) When was the last time you cried? On Tuesday... Though I did cry a little during the night, so technically, Wednesday?

3) Do you have any kids?  No, sadly not... But I hope it will be possible in the future!

4) Do you use sarcasm a lot?  I suppose I do sometimes, but just as part of jokes, not to be mean or anything. 

5) What’s the first thing you notice about people?  Their style, and their eyes. 

6) Eye color? Brown.

7) Scary movie or happy ending?  A happy ending. Always!

8) Any special talent?  I don’t know if I have any “special” talents, but I can kind of play the piano? I played a lot when I was younger, but I’m trying to keep up with it and actually get good again.

9) Where were you born?  Shiroiwa, Japan.

10) Hobbies? Makeup and fashion, shopping, playing the piano (and sometimes the violin with Toshinori!), spending time with my friends. I would also like to read more, but I always just end up reading the latest Vogue. 

11) Do you have any pets? Yes! I have three cats; Posh, Taiga and P-Chan. And one ferret, Fifi! 12) What sports do you/have you played? I’m not really sporty... I did ballet when I was younger. And I tried to get into Tennis with Yuka a few years ago, but I kind of lost interest. I’m just so bad at it!

13) How tall are you? I’m 154 cm!

14) Favorite subject in school?  Languages, social scienes and history.

15) Dream job?  I would love to work with children. Hopefully I get accepted into Early Childhood Development Studies this year at university, and I can go from there. Perhaps a teacher or support worker of some sorts!
