Stranger Things Set Decorator BTS
So the ST Broadcast Channel shared some videos where Set Decorator Jess Royal answered questions from fans about the show and here are my favourite tidbits! When talking about what a regular day looks like they showed pictures of the Byers House from Season 1 which I feel like could be an Easter Egg for the flashbacks were going to get this season! We found out Nancy is a fan of Prince and the still life painting on the dining room wall at the Creel House depicts the last supper meal that Hopper and the other prisoners have before facing the demogorgon.
They create full backstories for each character on the show including whether they have any pets, if they've been to Europe, and what kind of car they drive. If you open desk drawers, kitchen drawers, or lockers on set all of them would be filled with items so the actors can interact with the set however they feel like and know that there's stuff there. The biggest set they've ever had to build was the Starcourt Mall and every store in there, including Wicks 'N' Sticks, was shoppable down to the smallest packaging.
Each store was outfitted with the correct signage, shelving, and packaging that the shop would have had in the eighties! The white whale that they would love to have for the set that they can't find is a Xerox machine from the seventies or eighties to put in the front office of the school! I've also seen cast interviews where they talk about the Palace Arcade set and how every game was playable and it felt like a real eighties arcade so I think this level of detail is standard for the show. Which is just wild! The only other show I've heard of with that much attention to detail is Mad Men.
