Every time I see a "Shirou is just a bland harem protagonist and is the worst part of F/SN" takes I've come to realize this is largely a take that's predicated on the anime and not from reading the actual VN. It's really important to note that all the F/SN animes are 3rd person, which means we're observing Shirou and not really getting much if any of his internal monologue, while F/SN is in the 1st person. It's told directly from the experience of Shirou, and we get to see all that Shirou is thinking about it, including the ways his trauma literally shapes who he is and how unhealthy attachment to the ideal of a hero at the expense of the self.

But perhaps the funniest thing that really highlights how kind of clear this becomes is that the prologue of F/SN is told from Rin's perspective, and we actually for the only time in the VN really see Shirou from a 3rd person perspective, and he's described as kind of weird. There's nothing really inherently magnetic about him for some bizarre reason, he's actually described as putting people off. He's the kind of guy who will very quickly agree to help you but would rather go to work or go home than actually do anything particularly social. He's maladjusted enough that his three closest friends are Issei, who grew up in a temple and is largely utterly devoted to it, Shinji, who is more of a legacy friendship and actively uses Shirou, and Taiga, who is basically his mom.

The idea that Shirou is bland should probably be instantly destroyed by the time you get through like 5% of the game, because he's actually kind of a creature.

Not just Tamamo, Nameless, Gil, and Sakura and BB all got shafted Post CCC going into Extella. We already talked about how things with Tamamo, poor Nameless/EMIYA feels like he's only being dragged into the EX series at this point because he was in the original and we have to keep him around, even with how badly CCC Hakuno treats Nameless.

Then you have the Gil route where they finally made Gil a proper character and, as an unintended side effect, created the ship I would consider the one that has the most vocal minority surrounding it.

And then you have Sakura and BB thanks to CCC and the CCC Route Ending where you have BB die, get brought back in SERAPHIX in FGO, only to have her be assimilated by a Servant BB who has little to no recollection of Hakuno whatsoever and is basically the Nero Bride, Void Shiki, and 3rd Ascension Arc for BB and then we have the CCC Route ending where Hakuno and Sakura escape the Moon Cell and that plotline gets dropped and basically forgotten about.

And lets not get into Rin and Rani both being set up as partners for Hakuno in Extra and CCC starting off with both of those options only to basically do nothing for the rest of the game and them being left behind in the transition from Extra to Extella.

Point is: Hakuno ended up having a lot of ships created thanks to Extra and CCC and all the options Nasu created, likely throwing everything at the wall and seeing what stuck, and once he got settled on HakuNero around FGO and Extella being made, it was too late as all the other ships had been recognized, to an extend *Cough* Nameless *cough* Gil *Cough* Rin and Rani *cough cough*, enough that Nasu couldn't just drop all of them for HakuNero and has been trying to slowly make the remaining prominent ships be written off as no longer relevant i.e. Tamamo moving onto Ritsuka in FGO (or at least trying to as the HakuTamamo shippers are very stubborn about letting go, especially thanks to Foxtail being HakuTamamo focus but I can see that manga leading to basically giving an out for that ship) and SERAPHIX where you had Lip, Melt, and BB move on from Hakuno to Ritsuka and I guess Nasu deciding to leave Hakuno and Sakura from the CCC Route to just chill out in their own timeline to be happy together and never further elaborate on those two.

Which leads to Extra Record and the question of are we going to be back to square one with Hakuno having a lot of characters that are putting up clear shipping flags like it was in Extra or are we going to have those flags be reserved for Nero? Because it feels like if we are going to reestablish the EXverse as a whole (I'm under the belief that we aren't getting another Extella game, or if we do it'll be a remake, and record will basically be a reboot for the EXseries) and, if that's the case, it's important that Nasu actually clarifies the HakuNero ship being the main one early on as to prevent what happened with Extra and CCC from repeating itself.

I should also say that despite some of my annoyances, i do feel sympathetic to Tamamo fans.

I mean, in the original Extra, Tama was in every way as valid a choice as Nero. And unlike Nero, Tama is clear from the get go she wants to wed Haku. That just begs shipping them. She just seems like cute mikon waifu with perhaps a darker side, but who doesn't have one in Fate?

Then CCC comes out, and Nero marries Haku instead. Ok, well that's still just Nero's route and Tama has a route too, and neither route is more canon than the other right?

Then Extella and ExLink. Nasu comes out and says that Nero is Haku's true servant/lover and that Nero marriage end is canon for all intents and purposes. TamaHaku isn't resolved though, because that would make a fan backlash and we don't want that. Better to keep Tama fans engaged and clinging to hope. So instead, Tama is relegated to a possessive and toxic foil, doomed to lose to Nero in what she wants most.

Then, to top all that out, Grand Order goes ahead and perserves the sanctity of NeroHaku by creating Nero Bride (with a character bio that once again asserts NeroHaku marriage as canon). Meanwhile, what does Tama do? Slowly but surely jump ship to Ritsu. Again reminding us that Nasu values NeroHaku while Tamamo and TamaHaku is red meat to throw to those still clinging to the early days of the original Extra.

Like, seriously, it's rough. Tama got shafted hard. It shows just how disjointed the result is when the fans want one thing and the writer wants another.

Harem Poll 2/3 (do-over)

Since I've been doing content for Natsu's harem... I feel I should be equal opportunity here. (人◕ω◕) I'll pick... 3 smaller harems to do a similar infodump kind of thing. The trope of the "harem protagonist," as it is usually played out, is one that bores me to tears. Multiple characters being SO into one dude but constantly pussyfooting over what relationship they have and Which One Will Win is a power fantasy that does nothing for me. I hate it.

However I absolutely fucking LOVE it when a story takes that trope and makes it actually poly and/or an actual open relationship. Shirou has ship teasing with everyone in Fate/Hollow Ataraxia, but he also explicitely go on dates with all these people and kiss them (and in the bonus chapter fuck them) so even if you could argue about alternate timelines and time loops or whatever it still fucking owns. CoC2 allows your character to fuck left and right and to be married to like five people at once, but everyone makes it really clear that this is a setting where people are rarely if ever exclusive and your various spouses are usually cheering and clapping whenever you score. I eat that shit UP.

Personally, I always really like to see when viewing and appreciating characters and the dynamic between them can come full circle.

Like how when you first start watching Fate Stay Night (particularly if you start with the FATE route/anime as intended), you think 'Wow, Archer is SO much cooler and more interesting than Shirou.'

And then when you get through the UBW and HF routes/shows/movies you think 'Oh hey, Shirou is actually WAY cooler than Archer!'

And then after all is said and done, you step away for a while and when you come back to FSN later after having given it some more thought, you get to 'Wait, no. Archer/EMIYA is in fact far, FAR more interesting/compelling/cooler than Shirou.' Because Archer is LITERALLY the older/cooler/more-traumatized/more-fleshed-out/more-interesting version of Shirou who gets to be an actual CHARACTER with history, trauma and an arc of personal redemption who DOESN'T have all of Shirou's wish-fulfillment, power-fantasy, main-character-cheat-codes, harem-protagonist bullshit.

I dunno, I've personally always found that it pretty neat when you can do that :D

For a lot of visual novel protagonists, it’s hard to imagine how they manage to gather entire harems with how there just isn’t much that would make them all that likable to a number of girls in a short amount of time, but Shirou is just so effortlessly likable that you have to wonder how everyone hasn’t fallen for him already.
