Eastern Hokkaido Day 4: Shiretoko National Park
The last evening in Rausu had been a bit warmer and the nap in the afternoon had helped. I felt much more rested and managed to sleep until about 8am. A quick breakfast and freshening up and I hit the road on the Shiretoko Pass. The sun was out and it was shaping up to be a beautiful day. I stopped very briefly at the Rausu Visitor Centre to see the geyser there, the grass was all mushy and wet from the rain and my shoes got soaked. I waited for a few minutes to see it blow but was out of luck and on the way out I saw the information sign which said it erupts every 4 hours or so – glad I didn’t stick around longer! My next venture was Kumagoeno Falls, I parked the car at a small bay just before the entrance to a tunnel and crossed the road where a flight of stairs led me to the trail. It was a loop course that took about 20-30 minutes with a pretty satisfying waterfall to look at. It was already quite hot and there was a river running nearby that was secluded, deep enough and clean so I figured I’d have a quick bath there. My skin smelled strongly of sulfur from the secret onsen yesterday and it was a little too much for me to bear for another day. I slipped off the trail, under the bridge and down a bank to the river where I managed quite a refreshing cold bath. It was too cold to get right in the water but it was enough to feel clean. My drive led me around the winding Shiretoko Pass, and way up into the mountains overlooking the National Park, at so many points did I want to stop and take a photo but the road was simply too narrow. At Mt Rausu there was finally a huge parking lot with a viewpoint and although it didn’t really compare to the views I had seen during the drive, I stopped anyway to check it out. The entire pass only took me around an hour to drive, so I reached the Shiretoko Visitor Centre with still the entire day ahead. There were a few workers outside doing gardening and cleaning the windows but the building was completely closed, even the toilets were not available so my plans of staying the night here were now gone. Since I was already here I decided to go and walk the Furepe Falls track, the viewpoint of which is a huge cliff drop with a waterfall and a lighthouse on Cape Utoro. I was surprised to see that the waters were clear around the shore and it looked almost tropical. The walk was short and there was just one couple behind me so I had it almost to myself – I didn’t see any bears, I had my phone playing music as a deterrent. Back at the Visitor Centre I found a shady bench to eat my lunch and have a drink.
It was only 11am by this point, and my reservation for the guided tour of the Five Lakes was for 3pm. What to do with all this time? The best bet was to visit Oshinkoshin Falls and Utoro, I drove right down to the waterfall first and this one was probably the most impressive of all the ones on this trip. It had two major falls where the water cascaded down and sprayed a refreshing mist about 5-10 metres onto the viewing platform and steps up to it. You could tell by the roar too that this waterfall churned hundreds of litres of water through it constantly. I drove up to a viewpoint overlooking Utoro which turned out to be a closed campground, but the view was great. Kimbo (my car) waited for me at the Shiretoko World Heritage Centre while I had a walk around Utoro, including a long steep climb up Oronko Rock which was very tough in the heat of the day! Lunch was some 7/11 fried chicken and a huge iced coffee to be enjoyed watching some seagulls swimming in the river, plus I treated myself to an ice cream as I drove back up to the National Park for my tour. At 3pm our guide huddled us together to read some information, look at a bear sighting chart and check our gear. We signed our lives away and she unlocked the heavy gate that essentially had us entering the bears enclosure...
