They have been recorded to take over 170 different prey items, mostly in the 2 to 3kg range, including hares, guineafowl, geese, herons and reptiles. However, they are also known to take small carnivores such as jackal and are confirmed to have taken Cheetah cubs. Martial Eagles frequently take small species of antelope and they aggressively swoop and rake larger antelope to separate them from calves and fawns which are then often taken as prey.

Herrschaften und Oukies!

Heute haben wir schon die Hälfte unseres Urlaubs um - unglaublich wie die Zeit weg rennt!

Beim Frühstück auf unserer Bungalow-Terrasse sehen wir heute Morgen, wie wichtig die Warnhinweise wegen der Affen sind. 

Es schlendern unbeeindruckt ganze Meerkatzenfamilien über das Grundstück und versuchen, die Mülleimerdeckel zu öffnen und Küchen zu plündern.

Da diese wegen der Affen extra schwer und auch über einen extra komplizierten Mechanismus verfügen, haben sie wenig Erfolg. 

So kümmern sich die Meerkatzen stattdessen um andere Dinge, beispielsweise Türen und Fenster. Man kann ja mal gucken, ob versehentlich was offen steht. Clever!

Das gilt auch für die Glanzstare, die uns beim Frühstück beobachten und fast schon bettelnd neben dem Tisch sitzen. Als wir beim Aufräumen sind beobachten sie uns ganz genau, ob es vielleicht etwas zu holen gibt.

Die überdachte Terrasse ist gleichzeitig eine komplett ausgestattete Außenküche.

Es gibt neben Herdplatten und Spüle einen verschiedene Schränke. Wichtig ist, dass immer alles tiersicher verstaut ist. In den Abfalleimer kommen nur Sachen, die für Affen uninteressant sind.

Affen, Hörnchen, Mangusten und freche Tokos (flying Banana) suchen die außen liegenden offenen Küchen systematisch nach Fressbaren ab.

Während ich in unserer Außenküche abspüle, kommt die Roommaid von gegenüber angeschlurft, als sie mich sieht. 

“Aha, die will was von mir”, denke ich so.

Sie beginnt das Gespräch mit “Happy New Year” und erzählt mir dann, wie viel Arbeit sie jetzt zur Hochsaison hätte. Ich erkläre ihr darauf hin, sie bräuchte unser Zimmer heute nicht machen, da wir gestern erst gekommen wären. Freudestrahlend zieht sie ab. 

Micha hört den Wortwechsel von drinnen und meint. “Das war besser als jedes Trinkgeld.”

Im Zentrum des Camps gibt es einen einen provisorischen Shop, in dem man Souvenirs und die Grundausstattung an Lebensmitteln kaufen kann. Das alte Originalgebäude ist im vergangenen Jahr abgebrannt.

Von den Rangern im Camp werden geführte Pirschfahrten und begleitete Bush Walks angeboten, die man an der Rezeption buchen kann.

Auf dem leicht hügeligen Land wachsen vorwiegend Mopane, natürlich diverse Akazienarten und die schönen Makalani Palmen.

Diese Region wurde Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts überjagt, das Großwild dezimiert und die Elefantenpopulation vollständig ausgerottet. 

Während des 19. Jahrhunderts hatte das Gebiet nur eine geringe Bevölkerungsdichte, da die Anwesenheit von Raubtieren und der Tsetsefliege die Viehhaltung verhinderte. Die Rinderpest-Epidemie von 1896 dezimierte jedoch die Büffelpopulation der Region und mit ihr auch die Tsetsefliege, die Überträgerin der Schlafkrankheit ist.

Gegen Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts war dieser abgelegene nordöstliche Teil Südafrikas der Wohnsitz von Wilderern, illegalen Holzfällern, illegalen Prospektoren und illegalen Anwerbern schwarzer Arbeitskräfte von jenseits der Grenze.

Die Wildknappheit führte er jedoch auf die systematische Jagd der Burenjäger zurück, die seiner Meinung nach in einer Woche mehr Schaden anrichteten als die Afrikaner in einem Jahr. Sie hatten während des Krieges offenbar alle Elefanten, Nashörner und Elenantilopen ausgerottet und betrachteten Wildgesetze und -verordnungen als "Altpapier".

Von 1904 bis 1919 war Major A. A. Fraser sein einziger Ranger dort. Der exzentrische, rotbärtige Fraser wurde aus Schottland als Ranger für das kleine Pongola-Reservat (1921 aufgelöst) rekrutiert, bevor er nach Malunzane (auch Malundzane) und später nach Singwitsi verlegt wurde.

Fraser war jedoch ein schlechter Verwalter und noch dazu war er ein schlechter Manager seiner einheimischen Mitarbeiter. Er verschlechterte auch die Beziehungen zu Regierungsbeamten des Bezirks.

Als Stevenson-Hamilton 1920 aus dem Sudan nach Südafrika zurückkehrte, stellte er fest, dass im Reservat ein deprimierender Rückschritt in Bezug auf Disziplin, Management und Tierschutz eingetreten war.

Deneys Reitz, Minister für Land von 1921 bis 1924, und sein Nachfolger Piet Grobler setzten sich für die Erfüllung von „Paul Krugers Traum“ ein, und 1926 wurde der Krüger-Nationalpark gegründet.

1932 verband zum ersten Mal eine gute Schotterstraße Letaba, Shingwedzi und Punda Maria, aber diese Straße war nur während der Wintermonate für Touristen zugänglich.

Dennoch eine gute Gegend, um große Herden afrikanischer Elefanten zu beobachten, wobei große Familienverbände von 50 bis 60 Mitgliedern in seinem Becken häufig vorkommen sollen.

Mopani worms 😲

Mopani Camp

No worms, but can imagine when they are around, must be tons of them.

We have been alternating our driving, so the trip down to Mopani was handled by the tour guide(M) in the CSV (closed safari vehicle) as opposed to OSV.  😁

Lazy drive along the river and just before Mopani we saw a leopard in a tree, classic.

Mopani Camp is much better than Shingwedzi, a lot more cottages, but well spaced, happy with # 54.

Wonderful sundowners and dinner overlooking the lake, a huge herd of elephants at the lake the next day.

Had breakfast at Uitspan Waterhole, the only car there, 4 different herds a of elephants came and went, giraffes, buffalo, zebras, birds. At one stage something happened and all run away and came back slowly, we think there must have been a kill nearby, because after 30 mins, vultures started arriving 😲.

Easter in the Kruger

18th - 22nd April 2019 

We booked five nights in the Kruger to spend Easter driving the full length of the park and back.  We had a super comfy time and got to test out our new camping beds for the first time that we bought for Namibia (Matt finally gave into me). Writing this 6 months later all I can mostly remember was being exhausted on this trip and driving around from morning to night. Cant remember much of what we saw 

Day 1 - Crocodile Bridge camping: Matt worked and we had a lekker braai in the evening 

Day 2 - Tsendeze - the best campsite in the Kruger. The Amarula wasn’t bad either! 

Day 3 - Punda Maria - we stayed in the chalets because there was no camping available. Went on a night drive to see the pennant winged nightjar - which isn’t even around that time of year haha. And we drove all the way to Punda just to see that. 

Day 4 - Shingwedzi - not the best campsite but we did finally get to go to Pafuri picnic spot (best in Kruger) and Crook’s Corner. This famous spot in the Kruger got its name from “the outlaws who lived there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Because of the three sovereign territories that met at the confluence of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers - Portuguese East Africa, Southern Rhodesia and South Africa - it was relatively easy to avoid the law by hopping over into a neighboring territory. It became a haven for ivory poachers, gunrunners and illegal tribal labour recruiters”. 

And we almost managed to burn down the Kruger when we tried to move the braai and matt insists that I dropped it... we had people running in to put the fire out. Oops

Day 5 - Skukuza - we cancelled our campsite at Satara to be closer to the exit as Matt was driving to Zambia for his climate change story. We booked into a tented tent so that we could live early but yikes, never again. Those things were covered in cockroaches. I honestly struggled to sleep I was so worried little cockroaches would be walking all over me.

Letaba Camp

We move from the Shingwedzi River to the Letaba River area. Learning lots of new trees with the help of the Sappi Tree Spotting book. As if game spotting wasn’t heard enough and bird spotting! There are some amazing big trees along the rivers nyala Apple-leaf, Leadwood bushwillow along with the more familiar fever trees and sycamore figs. And away from the rivers it’s mostly mopane and some acacia and the odd baobab sticking up. Certainly more challenging than the birds but there are labels on the trees in Letaba Camp which really helped. It is certainly one of the prettiest camps with all the trees around and by the river and a nice elephant museum and hyenas patrolling the perimeter electric fence. We see lions in the Letaba River area only a few kilometres from the camp. We set off early morning to go see our lions again and just on the road are greeted by a pack of wild dog who run passed and head towards the river and the camp. The lions are around as are two side-striped jackal it is our best morning game spotting in Kruger so far.

But five days and no leopards seen maybe our luck is changing……

First time (gl)camping

The scene is set, 11 days, 2 camps, Northern section of Kruger and for the first time since being together... we are camping.

The SpoorSeekers' latest mission is camping in the Kruger. In the lifespan of our relationship we have now been to Kruger as many as 9 times in 3 years. We have tried bushcamps such as Sirheni and Biyamiti. The safari tents of Tamboti and Letaba and the seclusion of Roodewaal to name a few, but now we test ourselves and take on camping.

This little love child of an idea spans back almost 5 months when it was round about time to plan our next trip. We had recently done a trip that consisted of going to 3 Camps in 5 days. Spanning from Biyamiti in the South all the way up to Letaba about mid-way in the park, whilst also overnighting at Tamboti. Great... it was, but a valuable lesson was learnt that trip... spend more time in one location. That entire trips felt rushed. We never got to truly explore one area thoroughly. Now this is personal preference but from now on the rule is a minimum of 4 nights per camp.

This makes sense as it allows enough time to go through all the local (within 40 km radius) roads and truly dig your teeth into them. It also allows sufficient relax, reflect and resuscitate time in the camp itself - where often the magic happens right in front of you.

One can see that we enjoy long stretches in the park. In all honesty a lifetime in the park would still not be sufficient. Alas, we prefer to go for longer periods as much as our leave affords us. Ting ting ting, the alarm bells go off... going for longer periods means more expensive and rightly so. We estimated that to do a 10 day trip to an average camp, staying in their average bungalow units. This would cost on the higher side of R11 000 for 2 people. Now I dont know about you, but I ain't got that kinda dough! So we looked at camping and low and behold, you will save a stockpile of money. A 10 day camping trip to Kruger would cost you approximately R3500 for up to 6 people. Oh FYI campsites have hold up to 6 people, gotcha back! For me that saving is too great to ignore.

This is where the haters come in and say "ahh but its camping, I don't camp" and "All your camping stuff will end up costing the same as staying in a bungalow" to you I say each to their own, but the way i see it. Buy camping gear (essentials first, obviously) of good quality and you will be able to keep it for many years to come. You can always add more to the collection as you go along. Our journey on that front has also begun... but more on that later. Secondly, camping or roughing it is a good way to keep grounded. Yes, there will be extra dirt creeping into places, yes you will need to eat your food in candle light or headlamp for all your 21st century pioneers out there. And yes, you sill have to use communal ablutions. But come on! Remember what it is like to be a kid again and just be free.

And finally we have chosen to go to the North. No, not to Winterfell, but Shingwedzi a big rest camp situated on the shingwedzi river and Tzendse Ristic bushcamp, a dedicated camping camp lost in the Mopani shrub of the Northern part of the park.

Leopard are notoriously difficult to spot. Well camouflaged, solitary, mostly nocturnal and secretive. They prefer thickets or rocky outcrops where there is good cover, mainly because they are stealth hunters.

I have been fortunate in having seen Leopard often and having some amazing interactions, I suppose it all amounts to the time spent in their environment.

Many years ago, hiking alone in Suikerbosrand, along a rocky outcrop, I stumbled upon a resting Leopard, I am still not sure who got the biggest fright and all I can recall is a snarling, vanishing, yellow blur!

On another occasion I was camping alone, along a gulley next to a riverbed, sitting next to a campfire with only my cutlery as defence, I heard the deep rasping grunt of a Leopard meters away and I hastily retreated into my flimsy tent.

These photos are from when a good Australian friend joined me for part of a trip, his first to Africa, and he's left with the impression that it's a bit like visiting the zoo, Lion, Rhino, Wild Dog, Elephant, Cheetah, Giraffe, Zebra, thousands of Buffalo everywhere 😁. We were left without a Leopard sighting and only days to spare.

I planned a final “Hail Mary” attempt along the Shingwedzi River, country that screams “Leopard”! We were directed by another driver to a spot in a thicket where he had seen a Leopard earlier. Suddenly the Leopard moved, and then, a cub took a playful swipe at mum!

The female stood up and started walking out, crossing the road right next to our vehicle, waiting for the cub, who scurried across the road and to my total surprise climbed into a big tree and there was a carcass, hanging in the tree, safely wedged away from other predators and scavengers. The cub started to feed, another Leopard coughed nearby, probably a male, and the female quietly disappeared into the river bed.

Shingwedzi lies in the northern part of the Kruger National Park in the heart of mopane country. A scenic game drive along the Shingwedzi River in a south-easterly direction towards the Kanniedood Dam is one of the most rewarding drives in the Park. Waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant are often seen here and the bird life is prolific. Staying overnight at Shingwedzi is an experience that will last a lifetime.  It is a rustic camp that still carries the essence of the bush and is untouched by modern technology.

An amazing crocodile action shot by @howard.cleland here! This Nile crocodile has taken a tilapia fish, plus a bunch of weeds as an accompaniment! Africa’s croc species is prevalent across many national parks with perennial waters and can grow as long as 5m, with occasional beasts reaching 6m in length. In Kruger, the conditions are sub-optimal in terms of heat and food supply so crocodiles don’t typically exceed 3m locally. Seeing an adult drift in and attacking a drinking animal is incredibly intense and the power exhibited by the crocodile is incredible.
