Today the Church honors St. Usthazanes and Companions, Martyrs.
Orate pro nobis.
St. Usthazanes was a monk in late 3rd-4th c. Persia. He was also the Abbot of his monastery. He is numbered among the Martyrs of Persia under Shapur II, who were a group of Assyrian Christian martyrs put to death by Shapur II of Persia (r. 309–379) for refusing to renounce the Christian Faith.
Shapur II severely persecuted the Christians of the Persian empire from AD 339 until his death in 379. This was in part a response to the increasing Christianization of the Roman Empire, the fierce enemies of Persia, making all Christians suspected traitors. This was confirmed in his mind when St. Shimun Bar Sabbae, bishop of Seleucia-Ctesiphon, was accused of being in secret correspondence with the Roman emperor. In total, it is estimated that Shapur martyred roughly 200,000 Persian Christians. They are remembered as a group in the Roman and Orthodox calendars. The Roman Martyrology gives feast days of 6 April, 22 April and 9 May for different groups. Some individuals we know by name and they are honored with their own feast days.
St. Usthazanes is one such saint and martyr. Little is known about his life except that he was a monk and abbot. As part of the sweeping persecution of Christians, St. Usthazanes was tortured and executed with 12 of his brother monks at Ishtar in AD 341.
In “The Ecclesiastical History of Sozomen : comprising a history of the Church from A.D. 324 to A.D. 440” (written c. AD 349-350), he records the story of the martyrdom of St. Usthazanes, his fellow monks, and nearly 100 other clergy:
“In this manner the honorable life of Usthazanes was terminated, and when the intelligence was brought to Symeon in the prison, he offered thanksgiving to God on his account. The following day, which happened to be the sixth day of the week, and likewise the day on which, as immediately preceding the festival of the resurrection, the annual memorial of the passion of the Saviour is celebrated, the king issued orders for the decapitation of Symeon; for he had again been conducted to the palace from the prison, had reasoned most nobly with Sapor on points of doctrine, and had expressed a determination never to worship either the king or the sun. On the same day a hundred other prisoners were ordered to be slain. Symeon beheld their execution, and last of all he was put to death. Amongst these victims were bishops, presbyters, and other clergy of different grades. As they were being led out to execution, the chief of the Magi approached them, and asked them whether they would preserve their lives by conforming to the religion of the king and by worshiping the sun. As none of them would comply with this condition, they were conducted to the place of execution, and the executioners applied themselves to the task of slaying these martyrs. Symeon, standing by those who were to be slain, exhorted them to constancy, and reasoned concerning death, and the resurrection, and piety, and showed them from the sacred Scriptures that a death like theirs is true life; whereas to live, and through fear to deny God, is as truly death. He told them, too, that even if no one were to slay them, death would inevitably overtake them; for our death is a natural consequence of our birth. The things after those of this life are perpetual, and do not happen alike to all men; but as if measured by some rule, they must give an accurate account of the course of life here. Each one who did well, will receive immortal rewards and will escape the punishments of those who did the opposite. He likewise told them that the greatest and happiest of all good actions is to die for the cause of God. While Symeon was pursuing such themes, and like a household attendant, was exhorting them about the manner in which they were to go into the conflicts, each one listened and spiritedly went to the slaughter. After the executioner had despatched a hundred, Symeon himself was slain; and Abedechalaas and Anannias, two aged presbyters of his own church, who had been his fellow-prisoners, suffered with him.”
Almighty God, who gave to your servant Usthazanes and Companions boldness to confess the Name of our Savior Jesus Christ before the rulers of this world, and courage to die for this faith: Grant that we may always be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in us, and to suffer gladly for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.

Review: "What Do Nightmares Dream Of?"
Tumblr media
Author: Antonija Mežnarić
Date: 20/08/2023
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
________________________________________________________
On our way to our vacation home on the coast, my boyfriend and I made an obligatory stop in Rijeka. Of course, that also meant we had to visit its bookstores, where I managed to snatch a few cool books by some local authors.
"What Do Nightmares Dream Of?" is a horror novella featuring a creature well known in the Slavic mythology - the mora. In this book, the mora tortures the main character, Sanja, with violent and horrifying dreams inspired by the traumatic experiences from her life - her parent's death, her grandmother's ruthless nature, and the torment of growing up as a queer person in a very conservative surrounding. Sanja is desperate to get rid of the mora, so she could finally live in peace, but this task is not as easy as it seems. In order to face the creature, she has to work through the difficulties of her life and the troubled relationship she has with her family.
The nightmares Sanja deals with start somewhat tame, but as she gets forced to remember and reveal parts of her painful childhood, their intensity increases, creating grotesque imagery and haunting Sanja with the ghosts of her past. While Sanja is obviously distraught by the nightmares, she considers the mora more of like a nuisance to her daily life, rather than a real threat. She asks her priest cousin, Shimun, for help, but refuses to let him cover her new home with catholic imagery, that he deems is necessary in her situation. Sanja's repulsion towards religion is understandable, given that her grandmother has always maintained control by making her adhere to the commandments of Christianity, but it also perfectly portrays Sanja's utter need to escape the restraints of her former life. While the new flat she has bought and moved to is plagued by a seemingly restless and terrifying creature, she would rather suffer through it, than allow any sign of her grandmother's influence into her new home.
This decision forces Sanja to face the realities of her newfound freedom. She finally escaped from her grandmother's authority, but now she is burdened by the inability to adapt. She has been hurt for a long time, but now she is angry because she cannot comprehend what truly defines her as a person. Did her choices truly come out her own conviction or only out of spite? The mora feeds on these insecurities and plays with them in Sanja's dreams, and Sanja slowly starts giving into it. So much so, that the mora brings her to the brink of death - of turning her to a mora herself, which consequently stirs Sanja into realizing that it is not merely a coincidence that she is haunted by the mora. The two of them are much the same, but at least Sanja still has the power to take ahold of her life and make a difference, to finally allow herself to let go of what is holding her back.
The act of distancing oneself away from trauma is never easy and it includes different hardships that are very difficult to predict and even harder to fight through. Mežnarić masterfully displays this through Sanja's character, especially through the relationship she has with herself and with the one she has with her family. Because her feelings were usually undermined by others, she feels alone in her battles and refuses anyone to help her. Sanja only starts the process of healing when she finally gives in and opens up. The mere act of speaking about it is not enough to change her life, but it is enough for her to realize she doesn't have to do everything by herself.
While I did enjoy the story, the structure of it is a little too even paced. The tension is steady throughout the novella, but there is no true build up. There are instances where the text starts reaching toward something greater, but unfortunately falls short on it. Personally, I would've preferred if the nightmare scenes were slightly more grotesque and if Sanja's fear and anxieties were given more introspection. On the other hand, the aforementioned weak points didn't take too much away from my overall experience of the book and I did find it pretty compelling.
"What Do Nightmares Dream Of?" is a disturbing, but a strangely comforting novella that deals with childhood and religious trauma that manifest through nightmares in the form of a mora. It's relatively short, but offers a lot through its themes and characters, tackling difficult topics and the pain of moving forward. If you haven't yet had the chance to read a Croatian horror story featuring Slavic mythology, this would definitely be a good start.

Thoughts on Atem and his dad?
Tumblr media
look at my adorable baby son with his father and his father's historically inaccurate beard.
I flipped through the manga again (i forgot everything that happened in the anime so I'm going to ignore it) and i think there's some dutiful hero worship going on from atem - he barely remembers akhenamkhanen, but who he DOES remember looms large and noble in his memory; shimun also reassures him that akhenamkhanen was a good and strong pharaoh who loved his country and fought for peace. When TKB shows up, atem wants to desperately understand why his dad would've made items as evil as the millennium items. TWEEST! he didn't and his hands are clean and his saintly image is preserved in the eyes of his son.
So i think akhenamkhanen got off easy, narratively - the millennium items aren't actually his fault, they're akunadin's idea!! And when he found out about them, he was so horrified and sickened he died! Which, to be fair, is fine. not everything needs a knife twist of complexity; in a fictional story, especially a fantasy, some people can just be Good Guys.
But as usual with Atem I think a story about him confronting a legacy of violence and its consequences could've been more interesting than "dw, your dad was a good guy" - forcing him to consider what the millennium items actually mean and the true (murderous) cost of their power, in the veins of a classic "sins of the father" story. Everyone around him tells him his dad was a great guy, and in the end... his dad was kind of a great guy. BUT WHAT IF HE WASN'T. What if Atem had to reconsider his hero worship of his dad, and what it means to be a good king? Is it truly possible to be a good king if the kingdom is built on and maintained by the senseless murder of citizens? (It's not possible.) What would that mean for Atem? What choices would he have to make about himself and his role as pharaoh?
(There are a lot of things to say about how MW could've been an arc that grappled with abuses of power and assuming the burden of reparations/consequences/etc., and maybe it was supposed to, but in the end MW defaults to preserving the status quo and the autocratic reign of the pharaohs continues on and no one remembers the children of Kul Elna. blah. I don't blame KT because we know he was deeply sick and under intense pressure but MW is by far my least fav arc. 😞)
Other thoughts: I love the scene of Atem shoving TKB aside to cradle his father's dead body, i find it pretty moving... And I think this is the only line I've ever written about Akhenamkhanen.
“Let him speak,” Atem said, falling into his second glass, floundering in a puddle of beer and memories. The eternal two AM lights of an arcade. Incense in the temple. Classrooms at dusk, the air clouding with clapped erasers. His father had died a fool, crushed by the sickening knowledge of his own ignorance. “I care what he has to say.”

Character Profile!
~Su
Tumblr media
Book: The Flower From Tiamat’s Fire
Su and her brother Shimun grew up at an orphanage where they met Nikkal and Ethan and became friends. Su make sure they all ate, at least sometimes. Niall, the warden of the magic academy, took them out of the Children's Home and became their guardian. He sent them to school, visited them often and brought gifts. He also checked their magic skills and enrolled them to the academy when it became clear that there was nothing more they could learn at a normal school.
Su is a talented water mage. She's a rather serious person and can be controlling at times, but she's also known for smothering her friends. Su studies hard and is always among the first to help a community in need.
Interesting Fact:
At the Children's House, Su was often teased for not being able to pronounce the letter "L". When she met Nikkal, at first Su called her "Nika" because she was afraid to pronounce her name. Nikkal encouraged her to use her full name, and in the end, Su got rid of her complex. But for them, the nickname "Nika" remained forever a symbol of closeness and friendship.
Also, while being in the Children's Home, Su stole a knife from the kitchen to carve an ocarina as a birthday present for Nikkal. She's got a scar on her hand because of it.
