Directed by Thea Sharrock and written by Frank Cottrell Boyce, The Beautiful Game is an all-consuming, magnificently inspirational film that’s bound to leave a mark. Set in England and then Rome, Italy, it’s full of endearing moments left and right that feel both a little familiar and wholly unexpected simultaneously. It’s a gorgeous spectacle people shouldn’t miss, tailor-made for sports fans and possibly even those missing Ted Lasso a little extra.
Starring Bill Nighy, Micheal Ward, Susan Wokoma, Callum Scott Howells, Kit Young, Sheyi Cole, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Robin Nazari, Aoi Okuyama, Cristina Rodlo, Tadashi Watanabe, Kazuhiro Muroyama, and Valeria Golino, every player in The Beautiful Game brings something indescribably heartwarming to the screen. Like similar films within the genre, plenty of moments could’ve easily felt too saccharine or far-fetched. Still, with the inspiration drawn from actual events, every part of the film holds an authenticity that grips the audience right where they need it to.

anyway! y'all should be watching the Small Axe movies. they're all streaming on Amazon Prime and they're all incredibly worthwhile (even if I do have some minor qualms with them).
I think my ranking of the five films goes: 01. Red, White and Blue 02. Lovers Rock 03. Education 04. Mangrove 05. Alex Wheatle
and here are some bullet point thoughts:
Most of my qualms can be attributed to runtime, including to my personal favorite (by a hair), Red, White and Blue. The short runtimes are great for convenience, but I did feel 80 minutes felt a little scrawny for the story that film was trying to tell. I also think that film offers the series' best performance in John Boyega, whose smoldering, devastating performance should ideally mark the beginning of his long, wonderful, post-Star Wars career. Antonia Thomas and Steve Toussaint turn in wonderful performances in that film as well.
Lovers Rock is, as others have pointed out, a gorgeous piece of work. Anchored by a beautiful performance from Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn, the central "Silly Games" sequence in this film has stayed with me for the last two weeks. I think it might inch above Red, White and Blue in my estimation upon rewatch (partly because that film is slightly more traditionally biopic-y, while this one is exquisite in its immersive atmosphere). Gorgeous, gorgeous filmmaking (although there is a potentially triggering plot development near the ending that I'm not convinced is necessary or handled particularly well).
Education blew me away. I went into it not knowing the general consensus of how people felt about it, but I found it deeply moving. It's certainly the most optimistic of the five (even with an ominous Margaret Thatcher mention) and the ending made me more than a little weepy. The cast is great too, with Kenyah Sandy, Sharlene Whyte, Tamara Lawrance, Josette Simon, and Naomi Ackie all giving beautifully lived in performances. It's important to note that at 63 minutes, Education is the shortest of the films, and I found it to be the film most served by its short length.
Mangrove is a bit frustrating. The courtroom scenes are, indeed, thrilling, but the script seems to be more interested in speeches than in character. Despite this, the performances still mostly come through well: Shaun Parkes is a very good lead, while Malachi Kirby, Letitia Wright, and Jack Lowden also leave strong impressions in their roles. It's the longest of the series, but I still wish I knew more about the actual people at the heart of this fascinating historical event.
Alex Wheatle being ranked last is not meant to imply that it's a bad film, but I did find that the issues I had with Mangrove were repeated and a bit amplified here. I knew nothing about the real-life Wheatle (and he's played very well here by Sheyi Cole), so I'm grateful to McQueen for introducing me to him and his work, but the story felt rushed. I was very touched by the ending though.
All in all, a very good series. I'm so glad McQueen got the chance to create something like this. He continues to be a vital voice in world cinema. And just for fun, my top ten performances across the films: 01. John Boyega - Red, White and Blue 02. Sharlene Whyte - Education 03. Antonia Thomas - Red, White and Blue 04. Shaun Parkes - Mangrove 05. Naomi Ackie - Education 06. Steve Toussaint - Red, White and Blue 07. Amarah-Jae St. Aubyn - Lovers Rock 08. Malachi Kirby - Mangrove 09. Sheyi Cole - Alex Wheatle 10. Letitia Wright - Mangrove
so yes! go watch!
