On this day, October 11, the world celebrates the birthday of a man who needs no introduction – #AmitabhBachchan. Born as Amitabh Shrivastav in 1942, he’s more than just a Bollywood legend; he’s a force that has shaped Indian cinema for over five decades.
Hailing from Allahabad (now Prayagraj), the son of the celebrated poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan, Amitabh’s journey was destined for greatness. After studying in Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College in Delhi, he began his career in 1969 with a voiceover in Bhuvan Shome. Little did anyone know that this voice would soon become one of the most iconic in Indian cinema.
By the 1970s, with films like Anand, Zanjeer, and Sholay, he became the face of the "angry young man" of India. From there, the list of legendary movies only grew—Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, Shakti—each performance cementing his title as the "Shahenshah of Bollywood." His cinematic reign in the ‘70s and ‘80s was so commanding that French filmmaker François Truffaut once referred to him as a "one-man industry."
But Amitabh’s story isn’t one of easy triumphs. After a brief break in the 1990s, he made a stellar comeback in the 2000s with roles in Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Piku, for which he won his record fourth National Film Award for Best Actor. His international appeal also soared with appearances in films like The Great Gatsby (2013).
His list of accolades is as long as his filmography—four National Film Awards, sixteen Filmfare Awards, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The Indian government has honored him with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. Even France bestowed upon him its highest civilian award, the Knight of the Legion of Honour.
Not just an actor, Amitabh has dabbled in politics, produced films, sung playback, and hosted numerous seasons of Kaun Banega Crorepati, India’s beloved quiz show. His impact goes far beyond Indian shores, with fans across Africa, the Middle East, and the UK. In 1999, a BBC poll named him the "greatest star of stage or screen," and TIME magazine dubbed him the "Star of the Millennium."
As we wish the Shahenshah a very happy birthday today, let’s take a moment to reflect on his incredible journey. What are your favorite Amitabh Bachchan movies?

There is no one like him, or ever will be. Wishing the Shahenshah of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan a very Happy Birthday (11/10).
Amitabh Bachchan, born Amitabh Shrivastav on 11 October 1942, is a renowned Indian actor, producer, TV host, singer, and former politician.
With a film career spanning over 50 years, he has appeared in over 200 Hindi films. He's celebrated as one of Indian cinema's most influential figures, earning titles such as the "Shahenshah of Bollywood" and "Star of the Millennium." His cinematic dominance in the 1970s and 80s led French director François Truffaut to label him a "one-man industry."
Born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in 1942, Bachchan is the son of the famed Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and social activist Teji Bachchan. He studied at Sherwood College, Nainital, and Kirori Mal College, Delhi University. His cinematic journey began in 1969, narrating for the film Bhuvan Shome. By the 1970s, roles in films like Anand, Zanjeer, and Sholay solidified his reputation as India's "angry young man." His notable films from the 70s and 80s include Amar Akbar Anthony, Don, and Shakti. After a hiatus in the 1990s, he returned to prominence in the 2000s with films like Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, and Piku. In Piku, he earned his fourth National Film Award for Best Actor, a record achievement. He also featured in the Hollywood film, The Great Gatsby (2013).
Throughout his career, Bachchan has received numerous awards, including four National Film Awards for Best Actor and sixteen Filmfare Awards. Recognizing his contribution to the arts, the Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri (1984), Padma Bhushan (2001), Padma Vibhushan (2015), and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2018). France also honored him with its highest civilian award, Knight of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
Apart from acting, Bachchan has been a playback singer, producer, and TV presenter. He hosted multiple seasons of India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" titled "Kaun Banega Crorepati." He briefly entered politics in the 1980s and is recognized for his humanitarian efforts. Beyond India, Bachchan has a significant international following, especially in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and the UK. He was voted the "greatest star of stage or screen" in a 1999 BBC poll and was dubbed the "Star of the Millennium" by TIME magazine in 2003.

DAY 4381
Jalsa, Mumbai                     Mar 5,  2020                 Thu 11:32 PM
Birthday - EF - Leela Sitahal .. Friday, March 6 .. and the wishes go out to you on this momentous day for good health, good living and a very good Ef connect ..
.. we spoke about Sherwood College, Nainital .. and the theatre activities .. and suddenly as if by providence there is in the mail for me a picture of another theatre adventure when in Delhi University ..
Tumblr media
.. that is the Miranda House annual play .. titled ..”The Rape of the Belt” .. and yours truly studying in KiroriMal College in the Univ campus along with 2 other male actors, perhaps for the very first time were invited to act in a play that was being enacted in a Women’s College .. I played Zeus, the eternal God of the universe .. it was like a ‘sootradhar’ of the play .. I came in front of the curtain and introduced and spoke about the coming events and what was transpiring ..
That is Kenneth Maharaj Singh, who played the lead .. holding hands with another lady artist of the play, Dolly Thakore, who now lives in Mumbai, meets up often, and the other lady that has unfortunately been cut off had played the lead - Juni Das ..
Juni was from Kokata , elder sister to Brinda Das, of the CPM now in Parliament .. Brinda, who also studied in Miranda House was Miss Miranda , during those years , and she and Juni also acted along with me in theatre in Kolkata .. a small world indeed .. they have a younger sister, Radha, married to Prannoy Roy of NDTv .. !! .. all of us were a part of a large vibrant social gang in the 60′s in Cal .. those were the days .. Juni , sadly , we lost , some years ago , much before her time ..
The reason for my head down and in distraught condition has a reason .. on the final day of the Play I forgot my lines and made a mess .. worse, it was the day my Mother had come to see the Play .. could never get over the embarrassment ..
There was a third male in the play Anwar, Khawaja Ahmed Abbas’s my first Director and who gave me a break in films with ‘Saat Hindustani’,  nephew .. who is not seen in the picture .. Kenneth and Anwar were from St Stevens College in Delhi Univ.,.. Kenneth married his Univ days friend Piku Jha, also a dear friend of mine during College days .. and a cousin of Prakash Jha, I later found out while shooting for his film in Bhopal .. he connected us .. she lives in Pune ..
I mean ..
Just what a lovely little world we all live in .. no one is too far away from each other .. !!!
Delhi Univ., many may know or not was in North Delhi on an extremely vast area, almost the size of a city .. and had different Colleges all in one location ..
Miranda House, St Stevens, Hindu College, Ramjas, KM, HansRaj, Lady SriRam  et al., you could feel to be a member of every College , for they were just a boundary wall apart .. fantastic atmosphere ..  we were continuously strolling about in each others’ campus .. for a year the Science classes were all held jointly from all Colleges in a common Univ building ..
Clean up .. its the order of the times .. and I need it more than any other ..

Cost of War by Simran Randhawa
Tumblr media
About the Book
"This biography illustrates the life of wife and daughter of Late Major SJS Randhawa, KC". He attained martyrdom in 1997 while fighting Anti-National Elements in the erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir. After his demise, his wife, Lt Col RJ Randhawa became the First War Widow to join the Army. She paved a path where there was none and inspired Veer Naari’s to come. Her daughter lost her father and grappled with a fatherless existence. Never knowing your father means there is a part of you that you will never know. It means knowing the cost of freedom. This book is about selfless bravery, pain, and loss. This book tells the story of families of fallen soldiers, for it’s not just a life that’s lost. It’s the story of the unseen Cost Of War, the cost borne by the families of every soldier that is sacrificed for the greater good. This is the Cost Of War."
About the Author
"Simran Randhawa, is the daughter of Major SJS Randhawa, Kirti Chakra (posthumously); and Lt Col RJ Randhawa, the First War Widow to join the Indian Army. Like a true Fauji kid, she picked up a new hobby in every place she lived. From classical training in singing, and roller skating in Gujarat, to ice skating in Ladakh. She still rides horses, a passion she developed in an army riding school in Bathinda. She runs marathons, including the “World’s Highest Altitude Marathon” in Ladakh. An artist at heart, words aren't her only muse. She’s an accomplished painter and speaks as vibrantly with brushes as with a pen. Her final years of schooling were at Sherwood College, Nainital where she excelled in swimming. She competed in Skiing Nationals in Gulmarg, India. Simran studied at Simon Fraser University Canada and received numerous accolades for her work with victims of violence. She received the Woman of the Year Award, 2019."

Jim Corbett
Jim Corbett, a colonel in the British Indian Army, was best known for being a hunter, conservationist and naturalist. He held the honor of killing many man-eating tigers and leopards in India, especially the United Provinces (now the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh & Uttarakhand). Being a multi-faceted personality, he was also avid photographer and an author. In fact, after his retirement, Jim wrote a number of books on wildlife, describing his hunts and experiences, the most prominent ones being 'Maneaters of Kumaon' and 'Jungle Lore'. He is also credited for speaking on the need to save wildlife from extinction. For this very reason, the Corbett National Park in Kumaon has been named after him. To know more about Corbett, continue reading this insightful biography on him. Personal LifeJim Corbett was born as Edward James Corbett, on 25th July 1875, in Nainital, near the Kumaon foothills of the Himalayas, in the United Provinces (now in Uttarakhand). He was the eighth child of Christopher and Mary Jane Corbett, and had an Irish ancestry. They moved to Nainital in 1862, when Christopher was appointed as its postmaster. They owned a cottage in Kaladhungi, Nainital. Jim lost his father when he was very young and was brought up by his mother. Since a very tender age, he developed a love for the forests and their wildlife, especially those around his home in Kaladhungi. In his free time, Jim used to make frequent trips to the nearby forests and gradually, he came to identify most of the animals and birds present there, by their calls. He developed excellent trekking as well as hunting skills. In the meantime, Jim attended Oak Openings School (later renamed Philander Smith College) and Sherwood College, Nainital. After completing his education, he joined Bengal and North Western Railway, initially working as a fuel inspector at Manakpur (Punjab). Later, he worked as a contractor at Mokameh Ghat (Bihar). Major WorkTiger Hunts: Initially, Jim Corbett indulged in regular hunting and fishing. However, with time, he started shooting the big game with camera, rather than rifles.
