“I wanted to let you know that you weren’t meant to get caught in the crossfire,” Saren said. His voice was soft, as if he were speaking to someone on their deathbed. 

“That doesn’t offer too much consolation.” 

“You should be…” his voice trailed off as he tutted to himself, as if the very thought of offering his pity was a mild disappointment. 

“It doesn’t matter what I should be doing, to your masters’ logic. We’re all going to get zapped into nothingness, anyway. Why should I have a few more weeks of freedom when I could just die intact today?” 

“That isn’t how you should think,” Saren said, his voice dropping down to a hiss. “You shouldn’t need to think. The Reapers offer solace, a warmth in an otherwise cold and meaningless galaxy. Think of all we can accomplish if we worked with Them together. They’ve promised me asylum from the coming invasion, I’m sure you’d be spared if I asked. Their most loyal servants, we could be. Doesn’t that sound good? The ability to change the fabrics of the galaxy to align with you? How are you not tempted?” 

“And then what?” Shepard spat back. “Their need for organic bodies will run out at some point. Could be a few decades, could be a few months. What will become of us when we’ve all but sold our souls to the great metal devil in the sky?” 

You misunderstand. You never even tried! Think, Delia, think!” 

“Only those close to me get to call me by my real name--” 

“And why is that? Because the name Delia brings about too many sore memories? Your time in a gang back on Earth, an orphan biotic groomed to do the bidding of a madman--” 

“Don’t for a second pretend you know anything about my life--” 

“What if They could take that all away? All of the pain, all of the hurt? What if you were a fresh template, a newborn babe to begin life anew? You could even have your memories washed of this place. They can give that to you, you know. And They will, but you could choose to ascend first. They reward those loyal to Their cause. We could be loyal… together.” 

Shepard squinted up at Saren. The way the light framed around his face gave him the appearance of a halo, the most terrifying angel she’d ever seen. His eyes, violet daggers, shined with a brightness she had never seen before. It was almost as if he was a kid again, brimming with the type of enthusiasm that had yet to be dampened by the world around him. 

“Is that what you told Nihlus Kyrik, before you shot him in the head?” 

The light drained from Saren’s face. “Nihlus was a fool. He was given a chance to ascend. He chose the dishonor of a mortal’s death. A stain on his legacy.” 

“Why do you even care to convert people?” Shepard asked. “You said it yourself, the Reapers can indoctrinate whoever they want. Why are you even making the effort?” 

Saren looked her up and down, his head cocking to the side, as if her presence confused him. He walked forward and grasped her jaw in his geth arm. Shepard willed for herself to not show fear, but her teeth clattered and it was impossible for them to stop. She braced herself for the pain that would follow, the sweet embrace of unconsciousness… 

Saren wiped the blood from her face. His touch was gentle, as if all of a sudden he was afraid he was going to hurt her, like she was made of glass. All Shepard could do was stare at him, her brows furrowed together in puzzlement. She almost felt the urge to lean into his touch, the first friendly set of fingers on her skin in however long she was chained in this room, tortured mercilessly.

Silly little Sheterius thing I have going on that will be finished Some Time™

The fabric he wears is so soft it makes her jealous, and the frustration bubbles deep within her — that touching him much more will have to wait until after dinner.

"You look good, dear," she says.

He's so responsive.

Mandibles straying away from his face slightly before being pulled back tight against his jaw, and all the while he's fidgeting nervously with a long gloved finger running along the hem of his shirt.

"You don't need to ask to look at my skin."

She knows the teasing will have to be tempered if he is going to speak, but the temptation is so overwhelming when he's so clearly caught between bristling and behaving himself.

"It's nice to know you like my dress, though," she ends up adding. "Come, sit down, let's have dinner."

summary: Shepard has finally been convinced to take a break from her work. Meanwhile, Garrus reflects on his relationship with Shepard and comes to the realisation that they both had feelings for one another a lot earlier than he initially thought.

The quiet hum of the ship's engines echoes around the quiet room, occasionally broken by the bubbling of the fish tank’s filters when Garrus lets out a quiet sigh of relief, it had been a war of its own to convince Shepard to get some rest. He's still surprised he managed to get her bundled under the soft blankets with him. Now he only needs to get her to actually sleep, but knowing her, he will take what he can get. He can’t complain considering that either way, he gets to hold her for a few hours and she’s not running herself ragged with work.

It’s better to have her mind resting in any way it can, especially when she all but refuses to sleep.

Garrus looks down at the smaller woman, idly fiddling away with her omni-tool, the object casting a warm orange glow upon her face. A part of him thinks that he will never come to terms with just how lucky he is while another part of him fills with concern that she might be working still, but her reports don’t usually cause her to smirk at the orange screen, so he’s ready to let that concern die as quickly as it arose. While they cuddle in a gentle silence, he can’t help himself from subtly admiring her; from the way her silky hair brushes against the bare skin of her shoulders, down to the way her odd amount of fingers glide over the virtual interface around her arm. 

Back when he first got to know her, he had pushed down the flickering flame that ignited whenever she flashed him a gentle smile, fully convinced she would never have a flame of her own, not for him, at least. They had more important things to worry about at the time, a stupid thought in comparison to the not-so-stupid things they worry about today. 

He wants to smack his younger self for letting the chance to kick things off early go to waste. But as he watches her chew on her lower lip in thought, her eyebrow creasing slightly before typing away, he wonders if things are better this way. Sure, they haven’t gotten the chance to experience a relationship without the constant stress and anxiety that a suicide mission or war happens to bring, but they were both different people back then. Their strong relationship was built upon the back of such a close-knit friendship, after all. Despite that logic, Garrus’ mind can’t help but replay those tender moments from their hunt for Saren back to him, what-ifs filling the gaps in his memories when he thinks of the way she would gently rest her hand on his bicep after a particularly rough mission. The way she always sought him out first during her rounds of the ship, even though it would have made more sense to start with the crew deck. Or the way she would always extend an offer to him whenever she had a sliver of extra time to kill on the Citadel, usually while the Normandy was being refuelled or when they needed to stock up on supplies. 

His mind comes to a sudden halt and for a brief moment, Garrus would admit to being an idiot, just this once. A small giggle breaks him from his musing and he gives her a questioning look as she turns to gaze up at him.

"Joker's placed a bet on who's going to be the first to pick a fight with Javik. I'm not going to encourage that one, but I can't exactly say that I blame him." She explains, waving her hand dismissively.

Garrus lets out a chuckle of his own, muttering his agreement as he shuffles their positions, shifting to hold her in his arms from behind. She grins before turning off the omni-tool and leaning back to be as close to him as possible.

"Were you flirting with me?" He lowers his face to nuzzle her hair, causing his voice to come out muffled despite the embarrassed hum of his subvocals.

"You're going to have to be more specific, love, considering we're currently lying in bed together." Her voice is light and he doesn’t need to see her to know she’s smirking.

"I mean back on the SR-1, when you would come and chat with me while I worked on the Mako." He watches her fidget, burying her face into his arms wrapped firmly around her, almost as if it could hide her from his sharp eye.

"Oh..." She mutters quietly, her face flushing crimson.

"Are you really getting embarrassed over flirting with me back then, considering we are, and I quote, "lying in bed together"?" Garrus brings his hands up in front of her, making sure she can see the exaggerated air quotes while he pitches his voice up a few octaves, earning him a small scoff as she resurfaces. She gives his shin a playful kick with her heel before wiggling out of his grip so she can turn to face him.

"Hush, Vakarian. Yeah, I did flirt with you here and there. It wasn't the most obvious, but I had no idea you were that blind to it, are you really just noticing?" She tilts her head to watch his reaction intensely, a catlike smile taking over her expression as she notices the blue tint taking over his neck. She does her best to stifle her chuckle and reaches up to gently stroke one of his mandibles, "...Now who's the one getting embarrassed?"

“Yeah, well, I caught up in the end, didn’t I?” He does his best to sound confident, full well knowing the retort she was preparing, ready to shoot his way.

“Sure, but only because I had to risk an HR incident with you to test the waters.” The groan she gets from him in response causes her eyes to light up with glee, she then shuffles closer to rest her head against his carapace, sneakily stealing most of the covers as she does. He lets her get away with it, just this once.

He gently glides a talon up and down the length of her arm, never growing tired of the way her skin reacts to the touch, before pressing his mouth plates against her forehead. If anyone were to tell him back then that Commander Shepard would look adorable within the arms of a turian, Garrus probably would have laughed in their faces. If anyone were to tell him that she would look this adorable within his arms, well, Garrus would probably have passed out from laughter instead, not once believing that he of all people would be her choice. Now, he simply thanks the Spirits each day for the sight.

Shepard slowly rises in the bed, instantly catching his attention and before he can question her, she not-so-gently bumps her forehead against his and holds it there. Despite the adoration overflowing in his chest, he can’t help the bark of laughter that escapes him. He catches the confusion in her eyes and holds the back of her head before she can pull away, not wanting the moment to end so soon.

“You really need to stop hanging around Wrex and Grunt. A turian kiss is supposed to be gentle, not a krogan headbutt, sweetheart.” He lectures, subvocals humming with amusement as she rolls her eyes at him.

“That takes the fun out of things,” she retorts, her voice taking on a songlike tone as he lets out a small snort before she continues, “But yes, I was flirting with you back then. I wasn’t entirely sure if you weren’t catching onto it or if you were just not interested. Guess I got my answer there in the end, though you can see where we were both going wrong considering my own flirting skills were basically non-existent.”

“Were?” Garrus mutters, earning him a collision with one of the spare pillows.

“Hey, I’ve improved since we first started dating! Besides, you wouldn’t have me any other way.” She declares as she wraps her legs around his own and clings onto him tightly.

“You’re right, I wouldn’t” He punctuates his point by taking the blanket and re-arranging it, making sure she’s properly wrapped up as she begins to let out a small yawn, “Looks like it's time you tried to get some sleep and no arguing, I’ll be right here.”

She instantly goes to argue, despite his words, only to be stopped when he lightly presses his finger against her lips, effectively silencing her protests. She gives a small huff of defeat before nodding and he searches her eyes for a moment before dropping his hand, placing it between her shoulder blades and holding her close.

“If it distracts your mind and helps you fall asleep easier, you can just think of ways to improve your flirting techniques,” Garrus suggests flippantly as his own eyes flutter shut for the night and as unhelpful as his suggestion is, Shepard finds herself taking the advice and letting a dozen scenarios flood her mind, just for him.

40. Favorite place on the Citadel? There are many, but if I had to narrow it down, it would either be the council tower or the silversun strip. And while not quite at the top of my list, I have a fondness for the Zakera Ward from ME2 as well and I wish it was expanded upon a bit more. 45. Best villain in the series? Saren. A worthy opponent, hateable but also tragic, and with somewhat understandable motives (to an extent) as well as a sick design and great voice. I love the reapers as villains and Sovereign and Harbinger as a whole, but Saren specifically has so much flavor. 50. Favorite non-Shepard headcanons?

This is a small one, but I think some Turian colonies have markings that extend beyond just the face and are on other parts of the body too.

53. Your non-Shepard OTPs? Garrus x Tali, and (male) Ryder X Tiran Kandros. There are a lot more pairings that I like, but I wouldn't classify all of them as OTPs.

MShep or FShep?: I love both of em but i've played femshep more.

Earthborn, Colonist or Spacer?: Colonist baybee. love that added trauma

Biotics or Tech: biotics are so fun but i play tech more?

Paragon or Renegade: Renegade voice lines can be extremely hilarious and badass, but I cannot be mean to video game characters so paragon ^^;

Favourite Class: i've been playing engineer recently and thats fun, but I do like vanguard and sentinel

Favourite Companion: you know its Legion

Least favourite Companion: Don't really have any bc I love them all, might have to say Jacob just bc of how bioware wrote him, and hes mean to tali, garrus and thane... and the fact he can cheat on you??? But its not fair, its not his fault they made his character like that. He deserved better. :/ (and also Liara SORRY just mainly bc of how much she is shoved into everything)

My squad selection: I have a soft spot of garrus & tali since you can have them in every game! but otherwise I mostly pick whoever would be good on the mission...

Favourite In-game romance: Garrus is what got me into Mass Effect but I dunno, I enjoy a lot of them. Jack and Thane's are very sweet, i'm a bit partial to Miranda bc she's my fav girl. Oh of course how can I forget Samantha, i love hers a lot!! Probably between her and Garrus!

Other pairings I like: Oh geez we will be here forever if i list them. But also I like almost everyone together lol. some top picks are Joker x Edi, Miranda x Jack, Shepard x Wrex, and Shepard x Legion of course lol

Favourite NPC: Kirrahe, Aethyta, Shiala, that smoking salarian lol

Favourite Antagonist: hmm... Bioware really got em right out of the park with Saren and Sovereign

Favourite Mission: I dunno they can be fun but then some parts can be annoying, i was literally gonna say the below answers but they're loyalty specific lol

Favourite Loyalty Mission: Kasumi, Thane and Samara, I love undercover mystery spy stuff. Legion bc well I like to spend more time with them even though the result in that is painful

Favourite DLC: Citadel obviously lol, lair of the shadow broker is also pretty good

Control, Synthesis or Destroy: you're not bioware you can't make me choose. (I do like synthesis personally only bc I wish I were a robot.)

Favourite Weapon: assault rifles, kassa locust and carnifex my beloveds

Sexuality headcanon: Does he care? No! He somehow found himself in a relationship with Nihlus and decided to go along with it but he sure as hell didn't plan it and he sure as hell didn't date anyone before that or even take notice of anyone really. Saren doesn't know and doesn't care about his sexual orientation. If you told him he's demisexual he would simply not understand <3

Gender headcanon: again he does not care. I'm sure you could use whatever pronouns to refer to him and he wouldn't fucking notice that. He's not even particularly genderqueer I bet he would think of himself as cis if he cared or knew about gender identity but he doesn't care. He's got more important things on his mind.

A ship I have with this character: is that. not obvious. red x blue ship dynamic my beloved.

A BROTP I have with this character: the hate/love relationship between him and Shepard is the funniest goddamn thing in the universe to me I love writing it. Imagine you're so goddamn similar you actually can't stand each other. Fucking priceless. They're 'friends' in the sense that they're reigning in their active dislike of one another. If you locked them in a room together for 24 hours they would not kill each other but they probably wouldn't speak a word either.

A NOTP I have with this character: I don't know I guess I'm not that into sheterius which is kinda popular but there's nothing I would actively dislike as far as Saren ships go.

Random headcanon: no subvocals Saren my beloved <3 Not that he doesn't have them; he just has more self control than should be healthy, and he uses it to keep his subvocals quiet. Mostly as an intimidation tactic to make other turians uneasy, but also to hide his feelings. (It does come out when he's tired, injured, drugged or whatever, though.)

General opinion: Saren is my absolute favourite character to write. I love writing a redeemed villain or even in the process of redemption, I love that he's an asshole, and I love that in canon he's both a victim of a bigger bad and a villain in his own right. I just think he's neat you know?
