So, I had a thought
Original characters are always a pleasure to make, but they never seem to feature in any of my fics. I'd like to do something about that. Introducing Captain Victrisis: a turian soldier whose best interests lie with his people. He believes where he has the capability, he should do right by the demands of the greater good, but has a sharp edge to his personality as he treats his crew sternly, and with discipline.
To him, failure is never an option.

Captain Octavius Victrisis commands the Celestial: a turian frigate that patrols territory within Utopia, Exodus Cluster (Terminus Systems) as they transport people and resources between Eden Prime and Earth. Given the pre-ME1 state of being, this relationship with the Alliance is purely experimental, and will eventually lead on to a partnership with the turians as a whole, and thus the creation of the SSV Normandy (SR-1).

Wishlist for the future mass effect game that isn’t about The Ending:
Stop designing the female characters like that, please, I am begging. No more boob armor and boob windows in what's supposed to be functional combat wear. No more slinky catsuits. No more constant sexualization in both design and dialogue.
Speaking of, stop being cowards about female aliens. Give us major female krogan and turian and salarians. Give us female volus and hanar and elcor (or make them explicitly removed from the human idea of gender without going for 'male as default' with all male sounding voices and/or male pronouns)
If at all possible, include non-humanoids in the main cast. If that is too tricky on the gameplay, then at least include them more as major side characters. Put a hanar on the council you cowards.
More geth
More truly alien, unknowable minds like the rachni and the thorian and pre-reaper code geth
More romanceable aliens. More characters who are romanceable no matter the gender of the player character.
Carry over at least some of the original trilogy's themes of coming together across alien species, across synthetics and organics
A better paragon/renegade balance that isn't 'reasonable person' vs 'raging asshole who cares about no one and nothing yet eveyone trusts them implicitly anyway' and more about actually making hard choices
Stop making me scan planets

Ark Paarchero, 2820.
“We’re in, Kallo,” Ryder said as Liam, the last of the team through, began securing the maintenance airlock hatch behind them. “Let us know if the Verakan does anything weird.” “Like firing those big guns,” said Liam. “I think you would know before we would,” said Kallo. Once the hatch was shut, the airlock started depressurization. The group crowded inside—Ryder, Jaal, Drack, Peebee, Liam, and Vetra—were crammed shoulder to shoulder. The fit was tight enough that Ryder’s chest rose and fell with a bit of a struggle. She double checked the oxygen levels in her armor: normal. So, just a touch of claustrophobia caused by one bulky krogan taking up a full third of the airlock, a tall turian taking up another quarter, a broad-shouldered human male, an even more broad-shouldered angaran male, an average-sized human female, and the thankfully small Peebee. Vetra was the first to comment. “We’d be doing this in two groups if Peebee wasn’t a—what does Sara call you?—a peanut for an asari.” “Being pint-sized has its advantages,” Peebee said, grinning as she peeked out the airlock’s inner hatch window into the vestibule beyond. “But don’t forget flexibility. We could probably fit the other two in here in a pinch. Keep an open mind. Wanna know what I heard? The—”

When I Started: like 2015 iirc
How I Lost My Shit: uni + a major depressive episode, plus general disillusionment with the fandom
How I Finished My Shit: honestly? No idea. I definitely would not have pulled this off without the genius brains and unwavering patience of @sparatus and @thetrashbagswasteland, all of my writeblr buddies, and one very tolerant german shepherd who let me scream into his fur, like, a lot. This fic went from somewhere around 13k to over 140k in the span of a few months, and I can finally say I finished one of my personal works.

Don't Go Gentle into that Good Night
by Vesperfloyd
The Reapers have woken up from their slumber and have been invading the galaxy to feed on all organic life. Commander John Shepard has been resurrected after the first Normandy was attacked by Reapers and crashed on Alchera, by the terrorist organisation Cerberus to allow humanity to be the herald of victory, however he had other plans. He stole the new Normandy along with Joker and Miranda Lawson and returned it to the Alliance. He now has to race against time to piece together all the clues left by the extinct Prothean race across the Galaxy through Beacons containing their memories, to defeat the Reapers once and for all, while Cerberus is constantly on his tail. After locating a Beacon on Mars, Shepard and his crew were attacked by a Cerberus commando and a mech equipped with a biotic restraint device, resulting in Major Kaidan Alenko suffering serious injuries. As soon as they manage to return to the Citadel to get him medical care, a new Beacon has been reportedly located by a civilian on the mysterious planet of Tantalus Gamma, a human/Turian colony on the furthest edge of the Attican Traverse supervised by both Council and Alliance.

Does anyone else have a really hard time settling on what perspective to write a fic from?
First person perspective is by far the easiest to me to write from, and the one I enjoy, but it feels so...embarrassingly personal if a fic is spicy, especially if particularly graphic. I almost never see explicit fics written in FPP, probably because other people also feel it shamefully intimate. I find this unfortunate.
Second person is not too hard to write in, but I also see very few fics in SPP, so I don't know that people like this very much (granted I don't do the [y/n] thing because that's hella unimmersive).
Then there's third person perspective, which is by far the most common, but my least favorite to tackle for two reasons: 1) it makes me actually choose pronouns for an OC, and 2) it requires me to actually materialize an OC. (Odd complaint, I know. I'm just not good at it anymore, and I'm afraid any OC is just going to turn out to be a self insert anyways.)
Words of wisdom? Encouragement? Anyone struggle with this decision as well?

Left to right: Tarlanus Astros (My OC), Garrus Vakarian, Gaiso Fimraka (friend’s OC) Gaiso either has a cookie problem, or a proposition for you. This art is actually over a year and a half old. I finally decided to just finish it. As we, who are unsatisfied with Biowares official turian concept, tend to do... I wanted to conceptualize how i thought turian plates might look. If youve seen some of the work i posted previously, You’ll have seen this plate style already on several of my pics of Rhea.

Tenzen/Tosca WIP
I’ve been writing tons of fantasy lately and was missing the sci-fi stuff. One day I’ll make this WIP a fully fledged fic. God knows I have loads of ideas. Under a break since it got long.
He turned the water temperature up as high as it would go. If there was a ‘boil’ setting, that was what he wanted. The shower scalded plate and stung his hide, a constant stream of silver arrows melting away the scents of antiseptic, bleach, whatever that horrible tobacco Amadeus chewed smelled like -- some blend of burnt grass and shit -- and shame.
His shins ached, but it was a dull, numbed sensation. One he could ignore, or at least pretend to. He leaned his head forward, closing his eyes and pressing his brow plates into the slick, cool tile of the shower as steam enveloped him like a cocoon.
When the water began to turn from hot to warm to tepid he finally forced himself to turn the dial off and step wet and gleaming onto the bathmat. His obsidian plates glowed under the artificial lights of the bathroom, the bright yellow of his colony markings and tattoos shining like burnished gold.
But in the mirror, all that stared back at him was a hideous coward. His mandibles pinched against his face in disgust and he walked out into the bedroom without bothering to towel off.
General Oraka had a flare for interior design; colorful holos of flowers and gardens decorated the walls, which were painted a cool shade of coral pink. Sumptuous teal and white pillows filled the bed which beckoned to him with fresh linen sheets. Tenzen felt like he was standing in an expensive beach villa somewhere and not his superior’s Citadel apartment.
Pity was what had prompted the older General to give Tenzen use of his home. The wounded solider, freshly released from Huerta and awaiting new orders, which both knew would take him away from the Black Watch and his greatest source of pride.
Tenzen snorted as he strode over to the large footlocker which contained his casual clothing. Pride. Hubris was more like it. And didn’t he exude enough of that already? He didn’t need some prestigious assignment to ruin what good he had left in this life, he’d done that on his own.
No. He wasn’t going to think about her. Wasn’t going to dwell on how her eyes had turned wet like river stones, how her face had fallen like an avalanche, how she’d turned away from him and --
He growled in frustration and no small amount of self-loathing as he snatched up a shirt and his black shatha leather jacket. He’d been weak, he shouldn’t have let her in. Lo-- deep affection like that only brought pain.
Dressing, he marched back into the bathroom, seizing his talon file. He forced himself to stare at his reflection as he filed his fringe into vicious spikes. So long as they didn’t affect his ability to wear a helmet the Hierarchy wouldn’t care. The sound of metal on chitin and sight of black flecks filling the sink basin were soothing. He’d remove all the curves, the softness, become a fortress once more.
Look achieved, he took a moment to appraise himself; jet black with a piked fringe. The epitome of dangerous.
Satisfied but still feeling wretched, he went to the elevator and rode it down to the final floor before picking his way through the gaudy skycars of the parking garage until he reached his destination. She was truly a thing of beauty. Chrome that glinted like liquid mercury, an engine that roared like an enraged wild beast of lore, deep cobalt paint the same hue as his blood.
He’d once told his friends as they sat around cleaning their weapons after a brutal shoot out with Blood Pack mercs that the only thing he loved in this universe was his skycycle. They’d laughed, thinking he was joking, none understanding that despite the humorous lilt to his vocals that he was dead serious.
Blazing through Citadel traffic, a stream of neon light in his wake he slowly felt that he was over her. That he would get over her. Could get over Tosca. The keen that lay caged in his throat clawing to break free and be heard over the whir of vehicles shrieked that he was a liar.
Love was the worst pain he’d ever known. It burned, it burned, it burned.
He was headed to her apartment before he was aware of what he was doing. He had no plan, no excuse for his behavior, just himself, and he prayed to spirits he didn’t believe in that his tattered, turian heart would be enough, and that he’d be able to call her his once more.

Favorite game romances ever, in random order
I was playing Mass Effect Andromeda, and my friend told me, you are going to romance Jaal, because he is the alien. I was not surprised. She was right, so I decided to look at my favorite game romances, to see how many humans are in there.
I also forgot poor Morrigan from Dragon Age, I had her in my list but forgot to add her to the pics so she is another human!
So for 19 characters, 4 are humans! Interesting. I guess a lot of these are just humans with pointed years (the 3 elves and the tiefling Valen), and some are just blue humans (2 asari). INTERESTING. The majority are definitely non human in at least two traits.
Names, games and if they can BE GAY, under cut:
Regongar (Orc from Pathfinder Kingmaker), romancable by any gender, can also be polygamous with Octavia (who is also a great character)
Peebee (asari alien, from Mass Effect Andromeda), romancable by any gender
Flanker (human from Sorcery!), romancable by any gender
Wenduag (mongrel from Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous), romancable by any gender
Zevran (elf from Dragon Age Origins), romancable by any gender
Garrus (turian alien from Mass Effect), romancable only by female Shepard
Ifan (human from Divinity Original Sin 2), romancable by any gender
Jaal (angara alien from Mass Effect Andromeda), romancable by any gender
Fenris (elf from Dragon Age 2) romancable by any gender
Viconia (drow from Baldur´s Gate), romancable by a male Bahlspawn
Dirrong (orc from Salting the Earth), romancable by the female protagonist
Merrill (elf from Dragon Age 2) romancable by any gender
Isabela (human from Dragon Age 2) romancable by any gender
Dorn (orc from Baldur´s Gate) romancable by any gender
Valen (tiefling from Neverwinter Nights), romancable by a female protagonist
Tekehu (marine godlike from Pillars of Eternity 2) romancable by any gender
Samara (asari from Mass Effect) romancable by any gender
Kanerah (tiefling from Pathfinder Kingmaker) romancable by any gender
