HI... I've made another extremely self indulgent picrew

I made the majority of this in one night and polished it for another two days, this thing was built purely in a cat genetics autism fueled need to see if it was possible to make

it's not a perfect visual representation of all possible cat colours, there's only so much I can do within picrew's simple image layering, but I've done my best to make most colours look close to real life or at least nice looking

there's instructions included if you want to use it the way I built it to be used, but they're completely optional and you're welcome to just mess around with it with no rules if you prefer!

Easily the best bit in the trouble with tribbles is when Shatner just. Forgets for a moment that he should be holding the tribble like an actual animal and tucks it under his arm. Absolutely headlocks that little fucker. They just left that take in huh.

The original person who desires continuity isn't the version of the person who actually gets to experience said continuity, which is the upsetting thing Simon discovers. I agree it's not so much existential horror, maybe more just emotional drama. What I don't understand is why the original versions of folks assume they will experience the continuity in the first place. We all know how copy + paste works. And when you add to the pasted text, it doesn't suddenly appear on the original copy.

Also since you mentioned Invincible, another good example of this is the Mauler twins from Invincible, and how they are obsessed with knowing which one is the original and which is the clone, even though they've done it so many times how could it possibly matter, if it ever mattered in the very first place?

Can someone explain why conciousness duplication is existential horror?

So, this is mostly about Soma, but also as a wider concept, I feel like this is only as big a problem as you make it. Like: just don't deliberately fuck over 1 half of yourselves when you duplicate your conciousness?

I feel like this is only an issue if you consider the cloned/original mind "less human" which seems like a dick move. For a good example of what I mean, see Rudy from Invincible.

And I also don't get why "continuity" is such a big deal. If I'm dying anyway, I'd rather give some version of me a better shot at survival.

I just learned that in revelation space by Alastair Reynolds, the space ship is named Nostalgia for Infinity in English.

But in French (the language I read it in), it is named Spleen, which is a reference to the famous French poet Baudelaire.

Spleen means "profonde mélancolie née du mal de vivre", or in english, a deep melancholy born of the pain of living. It reminds me a lot of the capitain and others characters or just the universe of Alastair Reynolds.

I find this is such a good traduction. Shout out to Dominique Haas, the translator.
