My favourite movies about witches (part 2)
"Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971): Eglantine Price, a witch apprentice, hosts in her house three siblings from London because of the war. Wanting to use her powers to save England from the N***s, Eglantine travels with the children on a magical bed to find her teacher, professor Emelius Brown. Adventures, animated animals, songs and Angela Lansbury as the main witch, adorable!
The Love Witch (2016): Elaine wants nothing more that find a man who love her. Unfortunately, everyone of her lovers dies. Is Elaine a killer? Did they kill themselves? Is a consequence of the use of magic in the matters of the heart? Watch it to find out.
"I married a Witch" (1942) : Jennifer and her father Daniel comes backs as spirits many centuries after their deaths. Determined to have their revenge, the two finds Wallace Wooley, descendant of the man who denounce them, and Jennifer decide to make him fall in love with the help of a love potion, but it's Jennifer who drink it! Can true love be stronger than witchcraft?
"Bell, Book and Candle" (1958): the witch Gillian Holroyd, on Christmas Eve, met her new neighbor Shep Henderson. After meeting Shep's fiancée, her college enemy Merle, Gillian put a love spell on the man, with the help of her aunt Queenie and her brother Nicky. But can a love born from magic have a future?
"The girl on the broomstick" (1972): a Czechoslovak movie about the young witch Saxana, who escaped from her school to the human world for 44 hours. There she befriend the teenager Honza, but even three delinquents. And a simple spell will costs her many troubles.
"The witches of Eastwick" (1987): three friends, Alexandra, Jane and Sukie, use their unknows powers to summon their "ideal men". One by one, they falls for the new man in town, the mysterious Daryl, who is also...the Devil!

Bell Book And Candle
Tumblr media
Director Richard Quine Stars James Stewart, Kim Novak, Elsa Lanchester, Jack Lemmon, plus the apparently numerous cats who played Pyewacket USA 1958 Language English 1hr 46mins Colour
Witchy 1950s rom-com
In 1958, James Stewart and Kim Novak starred in Vertigo, which for at least a couple of decades now has been considered by critics as one of the best five or so movies ever made. In 1958, Stewart and Novak also made Bell Book And Candle, which is not widely thought of as one of the greatest works of cinema, but is a film I’ve long been very fond of.
Stewart plays Shep Henderson, a publisher who’s recently moved into a Greenwich Village apartment. On the ground floor, there’s a shop selling tribal masks and statues from around the world (a bit dubious by 2024 standards?) run by a young woman called Gillian Holroyd (Novak). Gillian lives in the building, along with her brother Nicky (Jack Lemmon), aunt Queenie (Elsa Lanchester) and Siamese cat Pyewacket.
Tumblr media
Gillian decides she rather likes Shep and thus will get Shep. Gillian is, you see, a witch – all the Holroyds have magical powers, in fact, although only hers are powerful enough to be of any practical use. So we’re off on one of those stories where a character wrestles with the idea of whether using magic to kickstart a relationship is unfair.
There’s a pretty valid reading of ‘magic’ = queerness in this film. It’s adapted from a play by John Van Druten, who was gay, and full of lines like, ‘I have always lived for and by the special. Not the ordinary. Why, I've never even thought of marriage’ and ‘Auntie, don't you ever wish that you weren't – what we are?’ The Holroyds hang out a basement club called The Zodiac with like-minded folk – early on, Shep and his fiancee (Janice Rule) turn up, very much sight-seeing straights.
Tumblr media
But equally, it’s by no means obligatory to watch the film through that lens. Gil, Nicky and Queenie could just be classic Greenwich Village bohemians with rare gifts.
My impression has long been that Hollywood never quite figured out what do with Kim Novak. She’s a complicated version of a Hitchcock blonde in Vertigo, but that was her only film with him. Likewise, she made one movie each for Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger and Robert Aldrich. (She made three with Richard Quine, director of this one, but that ended badly too and he's not thought of as belonging in the company of the chaps I just listed.)
Tumblr media
She played an all-American beauty queen, a gangster’s moll, an unhinged movie star, a sex worker at least twice, Moll Flanders… Seems like execs took a look at her body and decided she was right for raunchy roles and I don't think that was the correct conclusion. Bell Book And Candle seems a better fit: she’s cool, hip, a bit weary, a bit schemey, Very much the kind of woman Don Draper would have been involved with, if you’ll allow me a cross-fictional thought.
Novak was only 25 when BB&C was made but the character feels like she’s in her early thirties, maybe? James Stewart turned 50 during shooting and not a young 50, either. Supposedly, after watching Bell Book And Candle he made the wise decision that he wasn’t going to play a romantic lead in movies with actresses half his age anymore. (Which effectively, at that point, meant not playing the romantic lead in Hollywood movies.) Cary Grant, who was four years older, persisted for another five years and then retired completely soon after. I’m glad Grant made Charade and I’m glad Stewart stars in Bell Book And Candle but think he was wise to acknowledge at this point it was looking a bit off.
Tumblr media
So why do I like this film so much? A lot of it, I think, comes from the look – it’s a very classy Hollywood imagining of what Beatniks might be like. To me, Gil is one of the best-dressed characters in the history of film (her hair, short slivery blonde with a hint of lavender is cool too, only the greasepaint eyebrows are an issue.)
The colours are terrific – lovely work by the veteran cinematographer James Wong Howe. There’s a nice bit of location shooting (without the characters) in Manhattan that makes the sturdy studio sets feel like they could be the real thing and it really might be snowing.
BB&C is a romantic comedy, but like quite a lot of romcoms, it’s light on big laughs. Most of the funnier scenes involve Ernie Kovacs as a writer of non-fiction books about the supernatural who believes he knows what’s going on at the Zodiac Club. Rather, the film relies on charm and atmosphere. And, fortunately, it has more than enough of both.

Kim Novak in Bell, Book and Candle (Richard Quine, 1958)
Cast: James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs, Hermione Gingold, Elsa Lanchester, Janice Rule. Screenplay: Daniel Taradash, based on a play by John Van Druten. Cinematography: James Wong Howe. Art direction: Cary Odell. Film editing: Charles Nelson, Music: George Duning.
Kim Novak was not an actress of wide range, but in the right role and with a good supporting cast, she made a strong, sexy impact, as she does in Picnic (Joshua Logan, 1955),  Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958), and Bell, Book and Candle, in which she is paired again with her Vertigo co-star, James Stewart, and surrounded by a supporting cast full of scene-stealers: Jack Lemmon, Elsa Lanchester, Hermione Gingold, and Ernie Kovacs. The movie is nothing special: a fantasy romantic comedy with Novak as Gillian Holroyd, a witch who runs a primitive-art gallery on the ground floor of the apartment house where Shep Henderson (Stewart), a book publisher, lives. She puts a spell on him; he leaves his fiancée, Merle Kittridge (Janice Rule), for her but breaks it off when he discovers that he's been hexed. And so on. The movie was made after Vertigo, and Novak and Stewart were re-teamed because of a deal Columbia had made when it loaned out Novak to Paramount for the Hitchcock film. It's not the most plausible of pairings: Novak was 25 to Stewart's 50 -- an age difference that was less problematic in the plot of Vertigo, with its theme of erotic obsession. After Bell, Book and Candle, Stewart chose never to play another romantic lead, but the film gives him some good moments to show off his exemplary skill at physical comedy, as in the scene in which he's forced to scarf down a nauseating witches' brew concocted by Mrs. De Passe (Gingold). The screenplay by Daniel Taradash opens up a one-set Broadway comedy by John Van Druten that had starred Rex Harrison and Lili Palmer. It was nominated for Oscars for art direction and for Jean Louis's costumes, but lost in both categories to Gigi (Vincente Minnelli). The cinematography is by James Wong Howe.

A COVEN OF WITCHES
In honor of Halloween, I’ll be posting Witch Profiles for 31 Days.
“Bell, Book, and Candle” (1958) is another film that must have inspired the “Bewitched” TV series. Kim Novak plays Gillian Holroyd, a New York art dealer and modern day witch. Out of boredom she decides to interfere in the life of her neighbor Shep Henderson, played by James Stewart. She especially motivated when she discovers he’s engaged to a former college rival of hers. Using her cat familiar, Pyewacket, she casts a love spell on him.
Tumblr media
Soon Gillian’s Aunt Queenie (played by Elsa Lanchester) and brother Nicky (played by a delightful Jack Lemmon) get involved.
When Shep learns he’s been bewitched, he enlists the help of Bianca De Pass another sorceress (played by Hermione Gingold). But by then real love has taken hold of both Gil and Shep!
“Bell, Book and Candle” was originally a stage play. Joan Bennett toured in a production of the show in the 1950s.

Generic Characters
In addition to persistent characters, there are a number of generic encounter-able characters. For most of these, it is heavily implied that the player does not repeatedly encounter the same generic character over and over, and thus, the game does not store a full stat block for these characters without due cause.
There are a few limited exceptions to the rule of these always being a different individual: one example is V-KO. She is both a static character and a repeatable encounter on Mhen'ga; but as a factory-produced machine that is styled to act as a ubiquitous medical dispenser, more V-KO bots are liable to find their way to other planets while using the same 'encounter template' as the one on Mhen'ga. Indeed, there are plans to eventually enable the player to add a version to their ship.

Explanation
Shields
First layer of health a ship has. Can be regenerated in combat with certain ship gadgets and will fully regenerate after leaving combat.
Shield Def
Reduces the damage taken to the ship's shield health per an attack. Making it more effective against double shot and full auto Ship weapons.
Armor
The second and final layer of health a ship has. Can be regenerated in combat with certain ship gadgets, or slowly outside of combat by a dockmaster NPC such as Vahn or Shekka if she is a crew member. Requires a ship to be in port for repairs.
Armor Def
Reduces the damage taken to the ship's armor health per an attack. Making it more effective against double shot and full auto Ship weapons.
Ship Energy Store
The maximum amount of energy a ship can store at any one time. Ship energy is used to fire weapons and use certain ship gadgets. You will always begin combat with full ship energy.
Ship Energy Generation
The amount of energy a ship will generate each combat turn. Using the Recharge! ability will double the ship's energy generation for that round, but prevent the use of other equipment.
Agility
The primary stat used to calculate ship evasion. Is twice as effective at increasing evasion.
Sensors
The primary stat used to calculate ship accuracy. Is twice as effective at increasing accuracy.
Systems
Secondary stat used to calculate ship accuracy. Is additionally used offensively and defensively for 'system checks' in combat.
Thrust
Secondary stat used to calculate ship evasion. Is additionally used in combat to determine escape chance when using Escape!.
Accuracy

Many of the Earl Carroll Girls featured in the film were authentic cast members from Carroll's stage show, which ran on Broadway from November 1933 to March 1934. These cast members were brought out to Hollywood from New York especially for this film, and many stayed to pursue film careers.  Earl Carrol Girls who appeared in the stage version of Murder at the Vanities, but not this film version, included Dudone Blumier, Eunice Coleman, Muriel Evans, Evalyn Knapp, Helene Madison, Lorna Rode and Marion Semle. Also in the cast was a Ruth Mann, who was probably Helen Mann.
Tumblr media
The film was based on a Broadway production of the same name, but completely rewritten for the screen and with all new musical numbers.
Tumblr media
In “The Audition” (ILL S1;E6) aired on November 19, 1951 Lucy says to Ricky:  “I’ll bet if Ziegfeld or Earl Carroll had seen me, they’d sign me up like that!” She then puts a lampshade on her head and struts about the room in a moment recycled from the (then) unaired pilot.
Tumblr media
This film contains a song and dance number called “Sweet Marijuana”. It got past the censors because at the time the film was made, the drug was not illegal. Today, many prints omit this production number all together.
Tumblr media
The film also introduced the standard “Cocktails for Two” by Arthur Johnston and Sam Coslow.
Tumblr media
Gimbels in New York did a promotion in connection with the film, selling Mojud Clari-phane stockings using images of some of the Earl Carroll Girls. Sadly, Lucille Ball is not among them!
Tumblr media
The film was a box office disappointment for Paramount.

In case any of my Tumblr followers are London-based ...
Reading the words “James Stewart” and “Christmas movie”, you probably instantly (and understandably) think of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946). But here at the Lobotomy Room film club, we do things differently! On 17 December, our festive presentation downstairs at Fontaine’s bar is Bell, Book and Candle (1958) – a sumptuous “opposites attract” romantic comedy set over Christmas with an occult twist! Sultry Kim Novak (at the height of her beauty) stars as Gillian Holroyd, a modern-day (well, fifties-era) witch who casts a love spell on her unsuspecting new neighbor, mild-mannered publisher Shep Henderson (James Stewart). One problem – he’s engaged to another woman! Oops!
Bell, Book and Candle unfolds like a dream. The performances are sparkling. The production values are lush (costumes are by Jean Louis. Wait ‘til you see Novak’s wardrobe!). The Technicolour is gorgeous. And Novak’s pet Siamese cat Pyewacket gives the single best feline screen performance in cinema history! You will be lulled into a trance of sheer pleasure! And did I mention the £5 cocktails?!
Important! Please read the info on the Facebook event page. Reserving online via Fontaine’s website is essential! And take note of the coronavirus regulations we must adhere to!

Fandom memery
@tarysande tagged me to do the thing a million years ago, and I might be late but I’m here! Let’s do this!
Three Fandoms:
1. Mass Effect
2. Brooklyn Nine-Nine
3. Stranger Things
The First Character You Loved:
1. Liara T’Soni. She was just so cute and shy and bookish and easily flustered, and I loved her immediately. I knew nothing about the game when I started it, so when the dialogue with Kaidan turned flirty with Kaidan, I was like “oh snap! You can do this??” But THEN things turned flirty with Liara and I was just “BYE KAIDAN I HAVE A BLUE BOO NOW.”
2. Terry Jeffords. He was obviously the level-headed voice of reason who had little patience for Jake’s antics. Also, he’s a devoted husband and father who makes his family important to his identity from the very beginning, and that’s something I’d love to see more of in general.
3. Benny Hammond. He was just so understanding of Eleven being scared and obviously not capable of complex communication, and he was a giant, soft teddy bear, AND WE WERE ROBBED.
The Character You Never Expected to Love So Much:
1. Garrus Vakarian. I read a lot of people saying they were thirsty for him in the first game, but I side-eyed him in that game a lot, ngl. I saw him as a loose cannon looking to make Shepard his excuse for bad behavior, and DID YOU HEAR WHAT HE SAID TO TALI IN THE ELEVATOR OMFG. To be clear, I didn’t dislike him. I just didn’t trust him. But he arcs so hard over the next few games and gains complexity, maturity, and vulnerability, AND I JUST LOVE HIM A LOT OKAY.
2. Jake Peralta. He annoyed me a lot at the start of the show, but like Garrus, he arcs hard. I feel like he starts out as the standard “Everyman” who’s supposedly brilliant but really he’s pretty mediocre and his self-regard is entirely unearned. But then he learns and grows and treats his colleagues as equals and family. I feel like he goes from being a lone wolf to the family pup, and I love his development.
3. Joyce Byers. Her first scene put me off. A lot. She’s chastising her teenage son (who’s making breakfast and who’s working nights to supplement her income) for not knowing where HER child is?? I raised my eyebrow at her pretty hard for that. But then as you start to learn more about her situation and how ready she is lay down her life for her children and how she doesn’t let ANYONE tell her she’s crazy when she KNOWS she’s right and NO ONE TOUCH HER SHE’S MINE AND I LOVE HER.
The Character You Relate to the Most:
1. Tali’Zorah. She’s a huge nerd who has no idea how to adult and pretty much relies on bullshitting her way into getting people to give her a chance to prove herself.
2. Amy Santiago. Again, a huge nerd who’s super organized and color codes everything and developed a deep sense of competition because her brothers always told her she couldn’t do things when she was a kid.
3. Joyce Byers. She’s been through some shit, but she would die for the ones she loves. She’s not tiny, she’s concentrated fury.
The Character You’d Slap:
1. Admiral Hackett. LET SHEPARD REST GDI. I don’t hate him, but he needs to learn that the Alliance has more commanders in it than just Shepard.
2. Hitchcock. Boy needs to stop creeping on ladies, realize he loves Scully, and marry that man already.
3. BILLY FUCKING HARGROVE. THAT RACIST SEXIST ABUSIVE UNSTABLE PIECE OF SHIT. That being said, I do realize the irony that he’s likely the way he is because he’s been slapped too much. But still:
Tumblr media
Three Favorite Characters (in order of preference):
IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE???? WHAT KIND OF MONSTER!
1. Nyreen Kandros, Garrus Vakarian, Tali’Zorah
2. Rosa Diaz, Amy Santiago, Terry Jeffords
3. Joyce Byers, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair
A Character You Liked at First, But Don’t Anymore/Are Having a Hard Time with at the Moment:
1. Kaidan Alenko. I don’t hate him, and I understand a lot of people love him, which they’re free to do ofc. Specifically, it’s the romanced Kaidan that turns me off. He puts so much responsibility on Shepard for his feelings and even accuses them of cheating when he’s the one who did the breaking up (thanks BioWare for letting m!Shep defend himself to Ashley but not letting FemShep do the same with Kaidan that was great real classy and not sexist at all). I’m not a fan of that dynamic at all.
2. My love for the characters on this show has only grown <3
3. Karen Wheeler. I was a proud member of the Karen Wheeler Defense Squad in season 1, but then the Duffer brothers had to go and make her completely disinterested in her kids and then set her up with Billy and UGH EW GROSS NO THANK YOU. Season 2 Karen is a completely different person from season 1 Karen, and I will never forgive the Duffer brothers for creating an interesting, complex character and then going “oh wait you weren’t supposed to like her, here let’s ruin her for you.” KAREN WHEELER DESERVED BETTER.
A Character You Didn’t Like at First but Do Now:
1. Ashley Williams. While I never thought of Ashley as racist (in the Mass Effect universe, humans are on the receiving end of cultural and institutional racism and reverse-racism isn’t a thing so), the isolationist beliefs she holds in the first game put me off. Again, like Garrus, she arcs pretty hard and learns and grows and matures. At this point, I’m furious we didn’t get to romance her in the third game.
2. Charles Boyle, kind of. I didn’t exactly dislike him to begin with, but I found his obsession with Rosa creepy and distasteful. Once the show ditched that dynamic, I could appreciate him for being the goofy oddball he is.
3. Steve Harrington. In fact, I hated him quite a bit at first. But once he ditches his asshole friends and realizes he’s being an insufferable douche canoe, I started to warm to him. By the end of the season 2, I was ready to lay down my life for this disaster of a den mother.
Three OTPs:
1. Shakarian, Shali, Nyreen/Not being fridged
2. Jake/Amy, Holt/Kevin, Gina/Her phone
3. Joyce/Hopper, Jonathan/Nancy/Steve, Lucas/Max
And now for no-obligation tagging! @servantofclio, @mordinette, @pagerunner, @probablylostrightnow, and @bloomingcnidarians. Only if you want to!

Queered Gender Representation in Animation
As a queer animation major, artist, and storyteller, I not only enjoy discussing queer representation in media, but I also feel it is absolutely necessary to do so; I hope for the future that I am able to make an impact on the next few generations through my work, and I am able to bring the representation I or many of my peers never had growing up.
Modern animation geared towards young audiences, like feature films and television shows, may not only impact children or young adults; all generations are able to experience contemporary media, and for many, they are able to be seen in ways they were never able to before. It brings many people hope to see representation in children’s media, as future generations will be inspired to bring about change, or perhaps find in their future that very little will have to be changed at all. That is why, in a way, I believe any media with positive representation should be shared with all, and queer creators to this day work to tell the stories mainstream media rejects.
Tumblr media
There is a plethora of queer characters in the Netflix reboot, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Jacob Tobia voices the non-binary character Double Trouble, a character that identified as female in the original series. Queer creator Noelle Stevenson emphasized the importance of having the show’s voice actors identify with their characters (i.e. Jacob Tobia being non-binary and voicing Double Trouble) A minor character, Jewelstar, was also confirmed to be a trans man after the final season began streaming, as discussed by one of the show’s artists:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello, Jewelstar!
And some additional discussion on the character Perfuma, who was not voiced by a trans woman, but was designed to be and is speculated among fans to be:
Tumblr media
Along with the character Stevonnie, Steven Universe also has another minor non-binary character that appears in the epilogue series, Steven Universe Future.
Tumblr media
The character, Shep, is voiced by Indya Moore, known for their role in POSE. In the article, “Meet Shep, Indya Moore's Nonbinary Steven Universe Character” Taylor Henderson expands more on Shep’s role in the show:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps their presence in the show and lesson to Steven is directed to the viewer, encouraging them to open their mind and become comfortable with the uncomfortable in a sense. Steven Universe is well-known for addressing toxic relationships and tackling situations where one may need to step away from a bigoted person in their life, but it also teaches ways to change your mind and see things from a new perspective in ways that are accessible to both children and adults; crafted from the perspective of a queer non-binary creator, it illustrates real-life problems and confrontations queer individuals may experience in their lives. Steven Universe is a near-perfect example of queering the audience across generations and every aspect of society, along with She-Ra.
Guillermo Olivera discusses in further detail the importance of the “queer utopia” in the article, “The Violence of (In)visibility: Queer Adolescence and Space in Lucia Puenzo’s XXY”, bringing forth the notion that queer youth must be surrounded by a community of their peers and brought up in a secure space. Olivera writes, “these queer subjectivation processes point to what I would call ‘queer utopias’ in that they constitute radically other, non-already formulated utopias made possible by the open-ended movements of the heterotopian emplacements represented in the film... through imagination rather than preconceived anticipation or promise. A radically other “world of intimacy” opened up beside Alex and beside Alvaro, and within the community of teenagers.” (Olivera, 8)

Bell, Book and Candle **** (1958, James Stewart, Kim Novak, Jack Lemmon, Ernie Kovacs, Hermione Gingold, Elsa Lanchester, Janice Rule) – Classic Movie Review 5091
Director Richard Quine’s super-tasty 1958 comedy is lightweight but delicious Fifties fantasy fun, based on the play John Van Druten, with an expert screenplay by Daniel Taradash. With cinematography by James Wong Howe and sets by George Duning, producer Julian Blaustein’s movie looks as smart as it sounds.
