Gods I feel you I'm only 10 hours in after having received the game as a gift and I REALLY try to like it but it just ... doesn't feel like Dragon Age. Characters know stuff they shouldn't know about, the game keeps talking down to me, nothing I did in the previous games mattered, the tone is completely different, the mature storytelling of the previous games seems to be missing so far & what I heard so far of how the lore and the characters from previous games have been handled is honestly the worst part and breaks my heart. idk even if i wanna finish the game at this point anymore, I'm just kinda ... sad.
I'm so sad and disappointed, too, I remember our conversations, fics, and headcanons about DA! We were so excited and happy, because Inquisition, DA2, and DAO were genuinely well-made and aimed at pleasing the fans, despite their faults.
DATV is a good action game, no doubt about that. The combat is fun, there is a lot to explore and discover, and many locations are beautiful, even though some are terrible to navigate (Dock Town's structure makes no sense). But that's it - it's a good action game with the name "Dragon Age" pasted on it. It doesn't feel like it's part of the series, it constantly treats the player like an idiot, some references to past games and characters are literally hidden in the brief descriptions of the mementos, and there is even a Glossary to make sure the new players don't get frustrated.
Everything is safe and aseptic, cleaned of every deep piece of lore that could have scared new fans into buying or continuing the game. Even the banters lack the depth of the previous games.
A good game company should lure new players in not by rejecting their past entries, but by making them look even more interesting with their sequels.
Bioware wasn't afraid of offering piece of lore after piece of lore in Inquisition - it was a game set in a precise moment, whose prologue was directly tied to the events of the previous game, and new players had to accept this if they decided to buy it and play it. If they liked that premise, all that information and those details, then they were more than welcome - they were encouraged! - to go back, try the older games, and see how it had all started. It was a game made for the fans the company had already managed to win over, not for possible fans who may or may not bring new money in.
In DATV the new players can jump right in after quickly learning who Solas is and what he's trying to do, and old fans are left with an empty shell, with minor references that are supposed to make us feel happy and accomplished peppered here and there, while all our past choices and our favorite characters are forgotten or brought back with a terrible case of amnesia. It's lazy, infuriating, and very sad, and it smells of reboot, because the new devs probably realized they couldn't keep up with the amount of lore and choices the series contain, and they needed to start anew.

Ah, chapter 34's first half is up. Let's see if my tired brain doesn't completely mangle this post
So Kirika and Shirabe meet up with Miku at a festival. Kirika comments on Miku's yukata being cute and Miku says that it's new.
Tumblr media
Nice print on that yukata, Miku, we are not being subtle tonight
Hibiki arrives late due to after school training and Miku starts to ask what she thinks of her new yukata, but Hibiki notices a lost child and returns him to his parents. Miku tries to ask about the yukata again, but then Hibiki sees the shaved ice and wants to get some because it's been hot
Miku is totally fine with all this
Tumblr media
While heading in the direction of the stall, Hibiki comes across a person collapsed from heat exhaustion.
...Or rather...a god...
Tumblr media
Shem-Ha got too hot from wearing a sweater so they borrow a kiddie pool and ice from the local stalls and get her in it to cool her down.
Tumblr media
Ah well, we've reached the recipe, Chilled Custo--
Nope
Once she's feeling better and wearing Hibiki's much less hot gym uniform, she explains that she got tired of Fine and Enki constantly flirting like a couple of newlyweds around her so she fled the moon
Miku tries to get the attention back to the festival but...Noise start attacking. Kirika and Shirabe attempt to go and let Miku enjoy her time with Hibiki, but Hibiki, dense as she is, tells them that she'll go because they used LiNKER to train yesterday
Miku starts to stop her, but backs off telling Hibiki to be careful instead. She's left disappointed.
Tumblr media
On a later day, Hibiki and Miku are in their dorm. Miku is in a yukata and helping Hibiki into hers. Hibiki says she was surprised to see Miku wearing one when she got home and asks if there's a festival tonight but...
"Miku" starts talking about how humans are irrational and baffling, how they go to festivals in deadly heat and agonize over expressing their feelings
Tumblr media
Yeah, it's Shem-Ha. She starts going on about them having the desire to connect despite being scared so they can't muster the courage to say anything and worries whether she can really leave this planet to this girl...but well, she guesses that's just how humans are.
Shem-Ha states that she's set things up, so Miku can do as she pleases afterward.
"Geez, who would've guessed God was such a busybody..."
Miku says that she wants to do the festival over and asks Hibiki to step out onto the balcony...
...and that's where the first half ends
Side note: Audience Girl is also alive and well because this is still the official Everyone Is Alive AU

I'm rewatch XV and I really think that Shemiku might be my favorite non-Hibiki character u_u I love villains who are two people in one body. Also Miku's voice is just so much better when it's just a little bit deeper and more sinister u///u Shem-Ha I'm free on whatever day u want to take over the world
She has such strong "It's like she was looking at walking garbage" energy.
Tumblr media
Nothing but contempt in her eyes as she sees you as nothing more then a tool to further her goal. I shall worship at her alter!

Randomly thought about how the first and the final antagonists of the show pulled the same trick and both Genjuro and Hibiki got thrown off by it and were left open for an attack

It's interesting to note how the Tabris Origin, which involves a wedding, kidnapping and attempted sexual harassment, and fighting your way through an estate full of guards, is the Origin where gender plays a huge role in what story you experience. M!Tabris will always storm the castle coming to the rescue of his cousin and his betrothed, while F!Tabris will always have to fight her way out because the men in her life can't fully protect her (Nelaros dies, Soris literally hands her the sword, Cyrion is powerless to stop the abduction. Okay, this may be a little unfair to Soris who does fight side by side with Tabris and counsels caution the same way regardless of Tabris's gender). I'd go so far as to say that Tabris is the only Origin where the gender of your PC has a definite impact on the story.
TLDR to the rant in the tags: Tabris is constrained on all sides by being an elf, by their gender, in part by their family, and by society at large (both the Alienage and the wider city).
#bumble our guys are occupying my mind again. the origin defines their roles and experiences so#a lot has been said about the superficial equality of men and women in dragon age: they are equal from a legal point of view#both can become soldiers inherit or assume a position of political and social authority#but that's pretty much it#that experiment aside i think for the tabris story it's interesting. tabris is so contrained#don't go out of the alienage at night. don't anger the shem#don't carry weapons. don't insult them. live in squalor & misery with no hopes of social mobility. get married to a person you don't know#this happens to you because you are an elf. and this happens to you because you are playing as a man or a woman#the other origin where gendered violence might crop up is brosca and idk to what extent bc i haven't had much contact with f!brosca's story#but it would be just like beraht to make weird comments. aeducan gets a weird comment by trian too but that's it#but the alienage is a pressure cooker and the violence dealt unto its inhabitants has a perverse amount of nuance#unlike the circle which is another pressure cooker but a different one the alienage has a better life and more opportunities paraded in#*front of its inhabitants at every waking hour. the mages don't have that jarring contrast (they are reminded of how bad they have it in#*other ways but violence is much easier to normalize in closed communities. there is a reason uldred was able to stoke a rebellion after#*having been at ostagar. one taste of fresh air and that stuffy tower must've been hell awaiting. even wynne takes ger first chance to gtfo#the alienage however knows with striking clarity what it doesn't have. and that hurts. that stings. this ramble went way off track#but my main point is that tabris is constrained on all sides while at the same time having a better life dangled in front of their nose#*every single waking hour. no wonder their origin ends in massacre at their hands#the dam has broken loose. the water is finally cooking over and the pressure cooker explodes#tabris has a body count comparable to that of a seasoned criminal (brosca) and of a knight defending their invaded home (cousland)#which is freaking impressive if you ask me#dragon age#dao#dragon age origins#tabris#warden tabris#f!tabris#m!tabris#astala tabris
