Tbh, at this point I’m more excited about the Wu-Tang/Nas concert. 😬 For which btw I paid the same amount and I get two superstar acts that exist longer than AM. Not that I’m complaining about the ticket price policy of rich white rock bands. 🤣//Likewise, I’m only going to Sheffield because I have never seen them as a band. The venue will be way too large for me. I’ve seen TLSP twice but at smaller venues. I’m not a fan of stadium concerts; they’re a rip off, whatever happened to economies of scale? I think they should consider the venue size for future events. Mod , you mentioned that the last two albums are less suited for stadiums but smaller venues. I’m a fan of all their work as many are but there some fans who are not. Perhaps they should consider smaller/larger venues and play specific albums? Saw TLSP in 2008 at Leeds Academy;they got heckled by someone, who obviously wasn’t expecting the change in musical direction but Alex shut him down excellently. Enjoy Wu-Tang/Nas

Not a fan of stadiums/arenas either. They never give me the enjoyment of a typical gig. You're staring at a screen for most of the 90 minutes and you drink expensive beer. I could do the same with a concert film at home.

I think they should've considered the venues for the albums they were supporting on tour at the time. Arenas were fine for the AM album but for TBHC and The Car the venues should've been smaller and more intimate instead of trying to squeeze out the maximum. For example I'm gonna see Wu-Tang/Nas in an amphitheatre which adds to the excitement because it's a special venue instead of the multi-purpose arena AM are gonna play. I'm willing to pay 80+ € but then make it special and don't phone it in.

I found out after the fact that I could've seen EYCTE era Alex in all his gorgeous glory. But 2016 was a rough year and after Prince died I've just checked out mentally and focused on writing my thesis only listening to his music. So I didn't realise they had released an album and were on tour (in the city I lived in at the time) until they dropped the EP at the end of the year. Needless to say I'm still angry with myself.

Ashes of Leviathan Tour: Mastodon & Lamb of God 20th Anniversary Celebration of Ashes of the Wake & Leviathan!

Atlanta natives Mastodon made a special announcement via their social media channels on February 6th that they would embark on a North American tour with their good buds Lamb of God while celebrating the 20th anniversary of some seminal releases by both bands: Ashes of the Wake (Lamb of God) and Leviathan (Mastodon). The Ashes of Leviathan Tour kicked off July 19th in Grand Prairie, Texas at Texas Trust CU Theatre and will conclude on August 31st in La Vista, Nebraska at The Astro Amphitheater. Before this tour kicked off on July 19th, three days prior Mastodon performed under the name Big Hairy Elephant with opening support from St. Petersburg’s very own Wolf Face and local Atlanta favorites Palaces at The Star Community Bar in Little 5 Points off Moreland Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. This show was cryptically announced by Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher (@billy_butterslax) on his personal Instagram account on July 5th and served as a warmup for the Ashes of Leviathan Tour. Big Hairy Elephant aka Mastodon performed Leviathan in its entirety with an additional three songs: “More Than I Could Chew”, “Circle of Cysquatch”, and “Steambreather” which I assumed would be a precursor to their upcoming Ashes of Leviathan Tour setlist. This is one of the reasons why I have loved Mastodon for decades because they have continued to show their hometown of Atlanta much love and support over the years. It is something to behold when a band of great notoriety and success will continue to perform at clubs where it all began for them. This quote from the BBC from a review of Mastodon’s 2011 release, The Hunter, encapsulates a perfect way to describe Who? What? Why?  Mastodon has stayed so prevalent and influential in the metal music genre since their debut in 2000:

“They might be bonkers of lyric (sic), full of fantasy mumbo jumbo, but the band is unashamedly committed to its complex-of-composition craft, and the results have frequently stunned ever since their 2002 debut, Remission. They are the most ambitious, most fearless, most fun heavy metal band to have breached the mainstream since the genre oozed its way out of the Midlands in the 1970s.”

Fast forward nine days later when The Ashes of Leviathan Tour would make a stop in Alpharetta, Georgia at the Ameris Bank Amphitheatre with opening support from Kerry King and Malevolence. And you could tell early on that this crowd of fans was ready for an energetic and unforgettable evening from the bands.

Starting the evening was a band that I saw once opening for the Ukrainian metal band, Jinjer in 2023 at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia, Malevolence. Malevolence is a beatdown hardcore/metalcore/sludge metal/groove metal band from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England that has been active since 2010. Malevolence consists of Alex Taylor (lead vocals), Josh Baines (guitar), Konan Hall (guitar/co-lead vocals), Wilkie Robinson (bass), and Charlie Thorpe (drums). Malevolence has released three (3) LPs, two (2) EPs, and one (1) Demo since 2011. Now I was not familiar with Malevolence when I first saw them last year on tour with Jinjer.

Truthfully, metalcore and beatdown hardcore metal is not a genre that I listen to regularly, but after seeing the live show that Malevolence puts on, I knew that they were a perfect choice to take on The Ashes of Leviathan Tour. In the past, Mastodon has befriended and toured with multiple bands that are all over the metal landscape. So, I have grown to love seeing bands that I am not familiar with on tour with Mastodon. Malevolence took the stage and proceeded to get the crowd ready for an unforgettable evening with some wicked songs from their discography. I did recognize a few tracks that I liked during their set, so I felt better about my knowledge of Malevolence’s music. I will go support (and so should you) Malevolence the next time they come to set Atlanta on fire with their vigorous and brutal set. Kerry King, born Kerry Ray King, needs little introduction since he played a pivotal role as a co-founding member of the legendary thrash metal band Slayer (1981-2019). Kerry King recently released his debut solo album, Fron Hell I Rise, on May 17, 2024, on Reigning Phoenix Music. Kerry King Band consists of King (guitars), Paul Bostaph (drums), Mark Osegueda (vocals), Phil Demmel (guitars), and Kyle Sanders (bass). And yes, Kyle Sanders and Mastodon’s bassist Troy Sanders are brothers, and their other brother, Darren Sanders, is helping on this tour.

Truthfully, Kerry King’s entire band is comprised of nothing but all-stars in the world of metal music. Mark Osegueda is also the vocalist for Death Angel, Phil Demmel has performed with Machine Head and Vio-lence, Kyle Sanders has played bass in Hellyeah, and Paul Bostaph has played drums with Slayer with Kerry King, Testament, Forbidden, and Exodus. You see what I mean? This evening would be the debut for Kerry King to perform solo in the Atlanta area, so we all knew this was a special treat and would be metal history in the making. I could tell the crowd was just as excited as I was to witness the rebirth of Kerry King and his all-star band at Ameris Bank Amphitheatre. From the time of the first note, the crowd went wild as Kerry and the boys trashed through an intense set list that even featured a couple of covers from Slayer. If you are a fan of Slayer and the like, definitely give Kerry King and his band a chance when they come through your town.

Lamb of God is a Grammy-nominated groove/thrash/death metal/metalcore band from Richmond, Virginia that has made music since 1994. Lamb of God has released nine (9) LPs with Omens being the most recent release from 2022. Lamb of God consists of Randy Blythe (vocals), Art Cruz (drums), John Campbell (bass), Willie Adler (rhythm guitar), and Mark Morton (lead guitar). For this tour, Lamb of God’s 2004 groundbreaking release, Ashes of the Wake, is being celebrated alongside Leviathan (as mentioned earlier) and I cannot express how amazing this tour is for fans of the metal genre. Young and old metal heads alike, both Ashes of the Wake and Leviathan have stood the test of time and can still measure up with current releases within the metal landscape. That is when you know a band is very special, creating music that will impress fans for generations.

As a Lamb of God fan, I was a little late to the game and Ashes of the Wake was my introduction to the band’s music in 2004. Like many other fans of Lamb of God, this was a fantastic idea and I commend everyone involved. I have had the privilege of Lamb of God four times before this evening, and two of those times were when I was doing photography. So, I felt comfortable getting to photograph tracks #2-4 on this album, because track #3 is one of my favorite tracks in Lamb of God’s discography, “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For”. This song gets pretty wild on stage, and it is one of my favorite songs they play live. Whenever I have seen Lab of God perform, I am reminded of their sets' strength and power. Whether it is Randy’s dynamic performance while jumping around and singing, the crunchy riffs being laid out by Willie or Mark, the deep low-end bass lines from John, or the thunderous beats from Art, Lamb of God commands the stage every time they play live on stage.

Mastodon is a Grammy award-winning progressive/sludge/stoner/alternative metal band from Atlanta, Georgia, and has been consistently making heads bang since 2000. Mastodon has released eight (8) LPs, two (2) live LPs, one (1) demo, six (6) EPs, and eight (8) splits. With each record, Mastodon has matured into the metal powerhouse they have become today. Their most recent release, Hushed and Grim, was released in 2021 and emphasizes their ability to create a tribute to all people lost, especially their longtime manager Nick John. Mastodon consists of Troy Sanders (bass/keyboards/lead vocals), Bill Kelliher (rhythm guitar/backing vocals), Brann Dailor (drums/percussion/lead vocals/backing vocals), and Brent Hinds (lead guitar/backing vocals/lead vocals).

I remember the first time I heard Mastodon’s 2004 release, Leviathan, and I was floored at the raw power that album contained. From start to finish, this was one of my favorite albums and I did not have to skip any tracks while playing. In 2019, Mastodon and Coheed and Cambria embarked on a similar tour- The Unheavenly Skye Tour which was a celebration of Mastodon’s 2009 release, Crack the Skye, where they played the album from start to finish. So, playing one of their classic albums from start to finish is nothing new to Mastodon, and I knew they were excited at the chance to bring this once-in-a-lifetime experience to their fans.

Leading up to the show, I felt that both Mastodon and Lamb of God would swap closing duties out of respect for each other. I also assumed that since Mastodon was playing a home show, they would be the final band of the night. That assumption was correct. The time had come for the hometown band to take the stage for the record crowd that gathered on a rainy Thursday evening in Alpharetta. We were not allowed in the pit until after the first song, “Blood and Thunder” was over, but it gave me a chance to survey to crowd and see their candid reactions. Ameris Bank Amphitheatre removed the seats located close to the stage area before the event, so the crowd gathered as close as possible to the stage as they could. It was nice seeing so many elated fans enjoying themselves and singing along to the songs featured on Leviathan. If The Ashes of Leviathan Tour is coming to your area, get your ticket if you have yet to do so, and go listen to these bands rip it up on stage. You will not regret it!

“Exploring the ways in which our bodies encounter and process our environments, this exhibition looks at digestive systems on a micro and macro level. We dig in and out of deep time, excavating histories of food and the gut, from the interior of the body, to the systems of a city or the ecologies of a landscape. IN-SIDE-OUT-SIDE-IN is structured around Ladybower, a new sculptural installation designed by Laura Wilson.

Bi-secting the gallery into internal and external spaces, the sculpture is inspired by the two circular spillways which regulate the water levels in the Ladybower reservoir and supply water to Sheffield. Following the curve of the fibonacci sequence and reminiscent of a Greek Amphitheatre, Ladybower is the central stage and set for Gutted, a new body of work by Laura Wilson. Gutted is a script, performance, audio and installation investigating gut processes, instincts and ecosystems; from digestion inside our bodies to landscape-scale infrastructure and archaeological digs. Bringing to life digestive processes and encouraging us to consider how we think and feel through our stomachs, the work takes the idea of the hole as both an entry and exit point, a barrier between the inside and outside, it can be a portal between worlds – it consumes, and it vomits.”

5 Seconds Of Summer released their highly anticipated third full-length Youngblood following a three-year gap between records. The four-piece had been in full-album swing with 2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good, and they had the luxury of taking their time for the follow-up. The time to decompress allowed for spiritual and mental awakening for all four members, but for drummer Ashton Irwin, the break was a tough moment of coming to terms with his demons.

“I’ve always been terribly afraid of becoming an alcoholic,” he says. “On the road, you have this constant state of being the life of the party; that’s what being in a touring band is.” Irwin’s time at home allowed him to deal with his concerns head on. “[Coming off the road,] I was dealing with my feelings in the beginning with just alcohol. I had to overcome that pretty quick if I wanted the next period to be successful, and that was a process really that I’m still dealing with. It’s a constant thing.” Irwin’s fears stem back to his childhood, which in turn was a driving force in remaining positive. “My upbringing is…interesting,” he says. “I didn’t have a father, and my mom has struggled with alcoholism my whole life. I’ve grown up kind of bringing other people up…I’ve had to be relentlessly positive, and I have a very depressed mind.” Irwin used the off-time to engulf himself in writing, which in turn became a sort of therapy. “I actually dove inward for the first time,” he says. “I was living alone, and the only way I was able to focus on the album was diving into my actual songwriting and processing who I actually was through song. I was feeling down and the most depressed I’ve ever felt, but apparently that’s when you create your best work.” 5 Seconds Of Summer open up about all of this and more in the latest issue (AP 360). Halestorm and In This Moment Announce Additional Dates Together; Rocking South Side Ballroom in Dallas on December 12th

Halestorm and In This Moment apparently had so much fun touring together back in the spring that they are going to team back up this winter. That’s great news for fans who didn’t live near any of the markets they visited on that initial run. The month long tour -- which will see New Years Day also returning to provide support -- will kickoff in Norfolk, VA at Constant Convocation Center on November 16th, the trio of female-fronted rock outfits visiting a total of seventeen cities. Other notable stops include the BB&T Pavillion in Camden, NJ (November 17th), New York, NY’s Hammerstein Ballroom (November 24th) and Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY (December 5th). The tour will conclude in Florida at Mahaffey Theater in Saint Petersburg on December 16th. By then Vicious will have been out a few months, giving fans plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the new music from Halestorm’s highly anticipated new release. They’ll surely be playing a healthy serving of those songs, along with the classics. Still pushing their 2017 release, Ritual, In This Moment is sure to have another spellbinding show planned for spectators, their choreographed performances being something.

74 creates stunning landmark and interiors at Knight House, University of Sheffield, for iQ Student Accommodation

New landmark student accommodation Knight House in Sheffield has been masterplanned and designed by Manchester-based architects and designers 74, who additionally created the project’s full interiors scheme, including bedrooms, corridors, wayfinding and all amenity spaces. The new-build architecture for the class-leading student accommodation offer was implemented by Leeds-based architects Cunniff Design, with 74 acting as client-side architectural advisor.

’We worked on this project from its very earliest days’, 74 Founder David Holt commented. ’74 was initially engaged to examine the ongoing strategy of iQ Student Accommodation’s Sheffield campus, made up of three buildings adjacent to the University of Sheffield. The brief was to re-organise the existing buildings on the site, but further study of the plans and immediate environs revealed the potential of an adjacent site that turned out to be in the company’s ownership, in use at the time as a car park. A promising further discovery was a lapsed planning permission for a 12-storey building on the site, whilst under previous ownership. Once we had the client’s go-ahead to propose a new building, we sought to maximise the development volume and created the design for a 257-bed, 17-storey student accommodation building, which we are delighted to say has now completed and is set to become a key part of the iQ Student Accommodation Sheffield campus.’

Architectural Brief The brief for the building was to design a high-quality landmark structure to serve as a focal point for the area and to sit harmoniously within the context of both large- and smaller-scale existing buildings in the vicinity. The design proposal consisted of two main forms: a 6-storey podium and a tower element which rises above the podium by a further 11 storeys to create the final 17-storey building.

‘Although the planning process was challenging, we developed a very positive relationship with the urban planning team and planning permission for the proposed scheme was eventually obtained’ David Holt explained.

74 designed the building form, the proportions of the apertures and spaces between to create an elegant overall building appearance, exemplified by the slender vertical emphasis of the façade articulation, which includes bronze, anodised metal feature panels. Large windows run along the full length of the ground floor and lower ground floor amenity spaces.

Anne Knight Lobby Artwork Knight House was named after feminist pioneer Anne Knight (1786-1862). A notable public art piece dedicated to Anne Knight now greets visitors in the building’s lobby, in the form of a mosaic wall installation by artist Coralie Turpin. 74 was closely involved in the initial artist interviews and design-stage review process for the commission, as well as inputting into the final colour scheme, using the same yellow as used within the interior scheme.

Entitled ‘Anne Knight and the Dawning of the Women’s Movement in the UK’, the mosaic was constructed by the artist in her studio at Yorkshire Artspace and installed by Anglian Tiling. Anne Knight was a Quaker and anti-slavery activist and formed the first women’s suffrage society in Sheffield in 1851. The mural represents Anne’s legacy as a pioneer feminist, and the cyclical progress of the women’s movement in Britain from the era in which she was born to our present day. Like this mural, the women’s movement has developed in waves, but consistent throughout has been the aim to achieve equality for women in political rights and representation, education, work, health, sexuality and in the family.

‘It is something special that Sheffield is the birthplace of a campaign that finally attained its objectives when Parliament passed the Representation of the People Act (1918), and, a decade later, the Equal Franchise Act (1928)’, Julie V. Gottlieb, Professor of Modern History, University of Sheffield, who created the historical timeline for the commission, explained. ‘These achievements are not to the credit of great leaders alone but to the power of collective action, solidarity and sisterhood. An artwork conceived as we marked the centenaries of women’s (partial) suffrage and women’s entry into Parliament, artist Coralie Turpin gives visual form and texture to the uneven and fluctuating yet overall progressive movement towards gender equality in Britain.’

Interior Design Scheme After the lobby, visitors go through to the reception and waiting lounge area, allowing glimpses down to the main amenity space on the lower-ground floor. There are postboxes in red for each student directly opposite, sourced from The Safety Letterbox Company. The reception zone to the left features a bespoke desk with a ply geometric pattern-printed front, designed by 74, and an emerald green marmoleum desktop, along with green wallpaper to the rear and a green ceiling area above, whose shape directly reflects the deskfront.

The new logo for iQ Student Accommodation sits behind reception in neon, whilst three pendant lights with an orange knot hang over the reception desk, ‘The interiors concept was inspired by the surrounding landmark architecture and great natural landscapes all around the city’ Bianca Yousef, Associate at 74 commented, ‘as well as by the city’s industrial ties to the steel industry, taking form in both a bold colour palette, with a core emerald green supplemented by red, yellow and orange and strong geometric patterning throughout.’

Alongside reception is a waiting lounge, with a variety of seating arrangements. Acoustic panels on the ceiling are a motif used throughout, whilst in other areas, the ceiling is treated as a part of the design canvas and features green timber slats, interspersed with strip lighting. Pillars throughout are in a half-and-half colour scheme, using one of scheme’s three main colours, together with a marble-effect film, adding a playful take on classicism in the midst of an otherwise highly-contemporary treatment. Curtains are also split at the same level as the pillars (1500mm), in a green and orange colourway. Furniture in this space includes high-level red chairs at a laptop table, with a bespoke red rope back feature, another motif of the whole amenity-space the scheme. Flooring is a two-tone Amtico vinyl in an oak effect, with a darker-toned floor set at ninety degrees to designate the circulation areas. Feature inset carpeting in a geometric pattern beneath the casual seating arrangements is from Newhay.

A new set of iQ Student Accommodation brand language and illustrations was employed on this scheme. As well as the new identity, the branding also includes a series of bespoke, new, playful and location-specific illustrations, with the first iteration applied to the glazing here, in the form of a continuous line tracing out icon silhouettes of, for example, mortar board hats, pens, hands and laptops.

To the left of reception is the private dining area. A further brand illustration is located here, depicting a chef, whilst a wraparound linking wall features iconic images of Sheffield, from music to parks to famous buildings such as The Crucible Theatre. The private dining room features a blue Howdens kitchen with a stainless-steel splashback and geometric-patterned wallpaper on the opposite wall to the illustration. The communal dining table and chairs are by Telegraph Contract Furniture, who supplied furniture throughout.

To the right beyond reception, a red feature stair leads down to the lower ground floor, where the scheme’s social and activity spaces are located. The first area is an inset lounge area for board games and hanging out, with the printed plywood treatment used on the reception deskfront applied once again to the lower wall ply cladding that wraps around the inset seating booths and the TV and gaming screens. Yellow pendant lights and table legs add a bright highlight to the booths. Further illustrations from the new branding are used on the glazing here, featuring faces and hands to denote social exchange, whilst faux leather booth seating is complemented by freestanding furniture, once again featuring red rope-threaded backs. A small nook area has a darker and quieter feel, with a backing of geometric wallpaper, in grey this time. The metal studs on the banquettes here allude to Sheffield’s great steel industry heritage.

Huge overhead ceiling rafts over the lounge and gaming areas are in strong geometric patterns and are made of plywood with integrated lighting. A dry bar features bespoke lights and three sets of demarcating red metal grids in powder-coated steel – two zoning the lounge area and one forming the back rear wall of the kitchen, where cupboards are in a dark grey concrete-effect laminate. Three lights on giant steel U-shaped loop frames against the kitchen back wall were bespoke-made for the project by Enigma Lighting.

Leading off to the right from the social area is the TV amphitheatre, where pegboard ply steps and integrated seating with emerald green faux-leather seat pads are arranged to face the screen wall. The ceiling slats continue into this space, as do the two-tone curtains and the oak-effect flooring, although laid in a straight, non-herringbone pattern.

The game area to the rear of the main space includes pool, table tennis and table football. The same long pendants used over the main reception, with orange knots, feature here and there are also acoustic panels in red in the ceiling. A window bench seat in emerald green faux leather is by Telegraph Contract Furniture, whilst black demarcating panels in the flooring echo the acoustic ceiling panels in their zigzag shape.

Up on the first floor is a further amenity space, overlooking the entrance lobby, in the form of a small study area with a teapoint, herringbone flooring, two curving banquettes, geometric wallpaper, acoustic ceiling panels, faux-leather benches in green and grey with metal studs, plus a herringbone timber effect floor. Other elements of the ground-floor amenity space also repeat here to link the spaces, including two-tone columns, inset Newhay carpets, red geometric frames to demarcate separate areas and a ‘student at work’ brand illustration on one wall.

The bedroom designs, with each room slightly different, feature a similar palette. Dressed with a strong use of yellow, the furniture is in oak, grey and white, with a feature wall in dark green and others in papyrus white with a slight grey-green tint. Flooring is oak-effect by Amtico. Two-tone pillars feature in some of the rooms, which are arranged either as cluster rooms, with a communal kitchen, or as individual studio rooms with built-in kitchens. The bathrooms feature an acrylic-panel pod design and were pre-fabricated and craned in, with shower pods and backlit mirrors, manufactured by Walker Modular to 74’s design.

Mumford & Sons Extend Delta World Tour

Thriving off of the success of their recently launched worldwide Delta Tour, Mumford & Sons announced they will extend their trek into the summer. The new leg will find the guys visiting iconic venues across the west coast including L.A.’s Banc of California Stadium, Portland’s Moda Center, Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, George, WA’s Gorge Amphitheatre, Missoula’s Ogren Park at Allegiance Field, Salt Lake City’s USANA Amphitheatre and Denver’s Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre. 

Mumford & Sons' new album, Delta, dropped on November 16 and follows their 2015 release, Wilder Mind. The band’s guitarist and banjo player Winston Marshall jokingly describes the project as the group's "emo album."
