You think at one point Shea asked one of his new elf pals in Arborlon if they knew his dad and then they sarcastically asked if he knew their man friend back at him?
#flick: shea you can't just ask every elf if they know another elf#dayel: sure he can he just won't get a very good answer!#shannara: books#character: shea ohmsford#i cannot remember atm if he actually does but knowing mr. brooks it wasn't nearly as funny as it could have been#or as logically progressing -i'm sure if shea had asked eventine to help him find info about his dad#he'd be like oh sure mysteries are top ten activity for me - least i could do after you saved us#but also like shea's description is like...blurry....blonde...maybe his eyes were blue?#and eventine's like you described half of arborlon there son#and he's completely sincere about it too

BOOK REVIEW – The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks
The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks Publication date: 01 January 1977 Genres: High Fantasy, Adventure Source: ebook Living in peaceful Shady Vale, Shea Ohmsford knew little of the troubles that plagued the rest of the world. Then the giant, forbidding Allanon revealed that the supposedly dead Warlock Lord was plotting to destroy the world. The sole weapon against this Power of Darkness was the…

Interestingly enough, Sword of Shannara got this one right. Aragorn-with-the-serial-number-filed-off (Balinor? Is that his name?) certainly has a role to play, but it's Shea Ohmsford (I think that's his last name), who's basically a hybrid of Luke Skywalker and Frodo Baggins, who must save the world in the end.
(I haven't read this in years, but that's how I remember it.)
I think the reason so many LOTR ripoffs fail is because they make their Aragorn analogue the main character, when the entire point of Aragorn is that he’s “the person the villains think is the main character, but is Not.”
Aragorn seems like a traditional King Arthur style hero— he has huge Main Character Energy because he’s supported by destiny, by bloodline, by all these magic artifacts and prophecies, and etc etc. Frodo and Sam are Just Some Guys. Aragorn recognizes that Sauron understandably thinks he’s the main hero of this story ….and he pretends to believe it too, spending the entire series using himself as a diversion to prevent Sauron from seeing Frodo and Sam.
Aragorn’s whole thing is that knows he seems like the Main Hero of this legend to people who don’t know better —- but he also knows that he isn’t, and that his role is just to keep Sauron’s eye on him in order to protect the people around him.
And it works! Sauron is so fixated on defeating his Legendary Destined Archenemy with Extreme Main Character Energy that he completely overlooks the two ordinary little guys who were the real threat to him all along.

Thank you for the ask! ok! so I see ur username and think Shannara so ofc I’m picking that as the topic.
So. Basically. We all know that the Sword of Shannara’s cast was HIGHLY derivative of the LOTR cast. But. Hear me out. On a narrative basis, the two works differ massively and I really don’t think TSOS is as much of a copycat as people treat it as.
TSOS & LOTR spoilers undercut bc this got long
Two things before we continue. Not unpopular opinions just relevant facts that we can all agree on.
The Sword of Shannara’s commercial success was a massive boost for the fantasy genre (ESPECIALLY high fantasy) and popularized what had been somewhat niche beforehand
LOTR is the superior work. I’ve just been hyperfocusing on TSOS since I was 15.
Moving on. Look. There’s two big narrative differences here. LOTR’s central conflict is based in taking the thing of power and destroying it, TSOS’s central conflict is based in finding the thing of power and using it. In LOTR, Frodo ultimately claims the ring for himself and, in doing so, fails while in TSOS Shea ultimately claims the sword for himself and, in doing so, succeeds.
Smaller point of difference is that Flick (p. obviously the Sam parallel) doesn’t accompany Shea towards the end and instead. cosplays a gnome. as you do. But bc Shea is accompanied by Panamon and Keltset he’s not truly “alone” so it’s not as big of a point as the first two.
SO HERE’S THE THING. These differences? The effect of them is that Shea’s narrative is sooo much more of a power fantasy than Frodo’s is.
And yeah I know that there’s many different forms of power fantasies so obv TSOS providing more of a power fantasy is a general statement, not a universal one.
The thing is is like...a lot of high fantasy that came after LOTR and TSOS followed TSOS’s protagonist narrative. So you kinda see this pattern starting w TSOS of Tolkien-derivative fantasy but w power fantasy protagonist in there. That’s completely besides the original point here I just think it’s interesting.
