For once, I'm entirely okay with corrie having financial bother because it necessitates moving the Swains in with Carla and they couldn't be arsed doing a full house set for them. Don't do one. Remodel Carla's bathroom instead. Leave them there. They're fine. It'll be fine. Find a cat for them.
By all means, have them share whatever they want for as long as possible. Space, clothes, names, hopes and dreams, please excuse me while I-*sobs in overwhelmed lesbian*

here we go :) part one of three, updates to be released weekly!

sam says 4 (game master cinematic universe, part 3)
Ruby was at her mum's for a family dinner she couldn't miss on pain of death, apparently, and the Doctor was many things, but a family dinner kind of guy wasn't one of themâparticularly when Carla had already slapped him once in the short time he'd known her. He thought he'd broken his streak of bad luck with mums, but⌠well, seemingly not. So he was companionless for a few hours, and while he could wait for her to get back, maybe catch up on his readingâwhat was the point of waiting when you had a time machine?Â
He ran his hands over the TARDIS console, marvelling at her clean lines and metallic flourishes, the way that even now she felt brand new but familiar, and paused. Heâd just pop off for a quick adventure, nothing too dangerous, butâwhere to go?
He could scan for a distress call nearby, and pitch in to help. He could drop in on Donna and Shaun and Rose, beautiful Rose, and see how they were all doing. Or he could just hit the randomiser button, and jump in feet first wherever he ended up.
He remembered a conversation from a long time ago, when he wore a different face, and his gorgeous TARDIS wore a face too, for the first and only time.
âYou didn't always take me where I wanted to go.â
âNo, but I always took you where you needed to go.â
He grinned. Who could resist an offer like that? He pressed the button and whooped as the time rotor spun into action, ready to see where the universe would take him.
---
Apparently, he was needed pretty close to where he already was. Earth, 2024. Huh. Same planet, same timeâwithin a few months of where heâd left Ruby, even. The main thing that had changed was the location: he was now in the good old US of A. California, to be more specific, and Los Angeles to be more specific still. And to really narrow it down, the Doctor discovered as he poked his head out of the TARDIS doors, he was in⌠a broom closet. Not bad, as a parking spotâa bit squeezy, but out of the way. And as he poked his head out of that door, he could finally see he was in the backstage corridors of a studio of some kind. Film or TV, if he was to hazard a guess, it was a different vibe from Abbey Road.
With a shrug, he decided to go exploring.
It couldnât have been more than a minute before a young woman wearing the full-black outfit, headset, and permanently stressed expression of a production assistant came running up to him.
âAre you the fill-in Sam organised?â she asked breathlessly, and honestly, seeing the look on her face, the Doctor didnât have the heart(s) to tell her no. And really, what was the Doctor, if not a professional fill-in? This, this was why he had a randomiser button on the control panel, because whatever he was about to get himself into was going to be fun.
âSure!â
âOh, thank god,â sighed the production assistant, relief dawning across her face. âWhen Ally tested positive this morning, I thought we were sunk for the record, because we called around and we couldnât get a hold of anyone. But then Sam said he could get someone in, and, you know, here you are, and just in time, soâah, yeah, if you could follow me this way?â
Smiling all the way, the Doctor followed his guide through to hair and makeup, looking around as they went. The studio seemed to belong to a company called Dropout, according to the branding scattered around, and things seemed, at least on the surface, to be⌠well. Fine. He couldn't tell why he'd been brought here yet, which meant that when he found the reason, it was going to be particularly tangled. He couldn't wait!Â
And then he looked back at his guide, still engulfed in a miasma of anxiety, and realised he'd been too busy looking for clues to notice the person right in front of him.Â
âHey, it's cool, you've found me,â he started with a gentle smile. âYou can relax. Hi, I'm the Doctor. What's your name?â
âOh!â she said, startled. âThe Doctor, yeah, of course. Um, hi, I'm Kaylin. Look, sorry, it's just that I've been so busy this morning, I'm so distracted⌠Shit, and I would've completely forgotten to get your details too. There's paperwork to fill in, but you can do that later. Um, just for now, though, can I get your pronouns?â
The Doctor thought for a moment. âHe/him, for now.â
Kaylin nodded, making a note on her phone. âOkay, cool! And do you have any socials?â
âNot me, babes,â he replied. âI'm hardly sitting down long enough to be able to update, you know?â
âOn a day like this, I know exactly what you mean,â she said. âThat's okay, Lou didn't have socials either for the longest time. Right, so if you go through there, the team will get you sorted, and once you're done, someone will take you up to the greenroom. All good?â
âAll great,â the Doctor replied. Kaylin flashed him a quick, relieved smile, then hurried off.
Hair and makeup was a fairly quick process, the sound mixer fitted him with a microphone, and before too long, Kaylin was back to take him upstairs.Â
âThis is the greenroom,â she said, pushing the door open. âThe rest of the cast for the episode are already hereâtheyâre great guys, and theyâve both been on the show a lot, so theyâll be able to help if youâve got questions. And if you need anything else, just come find me or any of the other PAs, okay?â
The Doctor nodded, beamed at Kaylin, and walked in.
---
The greenroom was small but comfortable, and its occupants, two men around the same age as the Doctor appeared, looked up as he entered.
âOh, youâre new,â the taller of the pair said, clearly giving him the once-over.
The other sighed with a mixture of fondness and exasperation, just as clearly used to his friendâs antics.
âHey, Iâm Brennan,â he said, levering himself up to standing from his perch on a chair arm, and holding out a hand. âThatâs Grant.â
The Doctor took it warmly. âThe Doctor. Just passing through, and happy to help.â
Grantâs eyebrows quirked. âDoctor⌠something?â he prompted.
âOr is it just âthe Doctorâ?â Brennan asked.
âJust âthe Doctorâ,â the Time Lord confirmed cheerfully. âYouâll get used to it, everyone does.â
Grant didnât look convinced, butâ
âCopy that,â Brennan shrugged, and settled back on the arm of the chair, returning his gaze to the door.
Grant, in turn, looked at the Doctor and rolled his eyes in a clear expression of âno, I donât know why heâs like this, eitherâ.
âOkay,â the Doctor said after a moment of watching the watching. âI wasnât going to ask, but now I think I have to. Whatâs up with the door?â
Brennan huffed a laugh. âWell, the last time there was one of those upââ he pointed to the Out of Order sign stuck to the bathroom door, ââwe got locked in here for the game.â
âHeâs paranoid,â Grant interjected.
âWell, yeah, maybe,â Brennan retorted. âOr just cautious. Because Samâs been acting weird lately, and weâre coming up to the last few records of the season, so heâs probably planning something way out of the box for the finale. And the original cast was you, me and Beardsley, soâŚâ
He shrugged one shoulder meaningfully, and Grant nodded, conceding both the point and the potential for chaos.
âSo if Sam comes in to give us the briefing, rather than waiting til weâre on set,â Brennan continued, âor thereâs anything else weird going on, Iâm gonna know about it right from the beginning.â
He turned to the Doctor. âThe only reason I'm not quizzing you is because I know for a fact Beardsley was genuinely scheduled for this, so you can't be a plant by the production team. No offence.â
âNone taken,â the Doctor smiled. âThat sort of thing happen often, does it?â
Grant and Brennan exchanged a look.Â
âMore than you'd think,â Grant answered with a grimace.Â
âAlright,â the Doctor said slowly, then brightened. âSo what is it we're actually doing?â
Grant gave him a disbelieving glance. âYou don't knowâ?â
âVery last minute fill-in,â the Doctor said breezily. âBut don't worry, I'm a quick study.â
âWell, you're not that much worse off than the rest of us,â Brennan said encouragingly. âYou know about Game Changer, obviously, if you know Sam, and we only find out the rules of the game once we get on set. Hopefully,â he added, with a dark look back at the Out of Order sign.Â
The Doctor nodded. No, he didn't know Sam, and he didn't know Game Changer, but he could work out the situation from context clues. This was a game show. And with the Toymaker banished, and Satellite Five not coming into existence for another 198000 years, give or take, he found himself smiling. Maybe third time would be the charm.Â
âMmm, hopefully they aren't going to throw you in the deep end,â Grant said. âBecause Brennan might seem lovely now, but as soon as we get out there, he's a whore for points. He'll stab you in the back and won't even blink.â
Brennan barked with laughter. âYeah, and you wouldn't?â
âExcuse you, I'm always a goddamn delight,â Grant replied, the very picture of injured dignity.Â
âOh, absolutely!â agreed a new voice. The Doctor turned to the now-open door to see a bearded man in a pinstriped suit smiling broadly. âThat's why we keep inviting you back!â
Grant bowed sarcastically. âWhy, thank you, Sam. Good to know I'm appreciated by someone here.â
âAlways,â Sam replied, gently but firmly ending that particular path of the conversation. He scanned the room, and his eyes lit up when they landed on the Doctor.Â
âAh, you must be the Doctor!â he said with obvious delight, walking over with his hand outstretched. âI'm Samâthanks for filling in for us, you've made sure we're going to have a good show. Seriously, it's a pleasure to have you here.â
âAw, cheers!â the Doctor smiled, shaking the offered hand. âGlad I could help out, I'm really looking forward to this!â
âWell, great!â Sam exclaimed, then took a step back, regarding all three players in turn. âNow, folks, I'm just letting you know that we're just about ready to start the record, so if you can start heading down, that'd be great.â
Grant and Brennan noddedâBrennan, the Doctor noticed, with relief.Â
âSee you down there,â Sam said, smiling. âHave a great show, andââ
His eyes caught on the Doctor's for a second, twinkling.Â
âGood luck.â
---
Backstage, the Doctor, Brennan and Grant were marshalled into podium order and given a final briefing from the crew. And then, with a thumbs-up from Kaylin, that was it.
Showtime.
âGet ready for a Game Changer!â came Sam's voice from onstage. âTonightâs guests: he can shoot off a monologue with laser accuracy; itâs Brennan Lee Mulligan!â
Brennan, his back to the camera as the curtains opened, spun on his heel and, with a stone-cold expression, pointed finger guns straight down the barrel, before letting the facade crack open. âHi!â he exclaimed, and walked over to the leftmost podium.
âItâs his first appearance, but heâs already on fire; itâs the Doctor!â
The Doctor leant against the archway to the stage and flashed a broad smile towards the camera, then in a few skipping steps, had bounded over to the next free podium. What the hell, why not make an entrance?
âAnd even in the toughest of mazes, youâll always be able to find him; itâs Grant OâBrien!â
Grant dipped his lanky frame into an approximation of a curtsey, spreading his arms wide, then sauntered over to the closest podium with a grin.
âAnd your host, me!â Sam announced, a ring of manic white showing around his irises as he beamed down the barrel of the camera. âIâve been here the whole time!â
âThis,â he continued, pushing his microphone shut and stowing it in his jacket pocket, âis Game Changer, the only game show where the game changes every show. I am your host, Sam Reich!âÂ
As he said his name, he looked at his hands, front and back, as if he was pleasantly surprised to be himself, then gestured towards the three podiums.
âI am joined today by these three lovely contestants! Now, you understand how the game works.â
âOf course not,â Grant started. âYou know we don't.â
âWe can't, Sam, that's the whole point of the theatre you've set up here,â Brennan said over him.Â
âNot yet,â was all the Doctor said, anticipation starting to drum a tattoo of excitement against the inside of his ribcage.Â
âThatâs right!â Sam said brightly, shooting finger guns at the camera. âOur players have no idea what game it is theyâre about to play. The only way to learn is by playing. The only way to win is by learning, and the only way to begin is by beginning! So without further ado, letâs begin by giving each of our players fifty points.â
The Doctor, biding his time, watched the reactions of his fellow contestants. Grant looked at the front of his podium, checking the point total, and nodding approvingly when he saw that yes, it was sitting at a round fifty. Brennan, on the other hand, was starting to frown.
âPlayers, Sam says: touch your nose,â Sam began, and Brennan sighed the sigh of someone who wasnât happy to be proved right.
âOh, no,â he groaned. âOh, you son of a bitch. Wasnât one this season enough?â
He touched his nose anyway, as did the others, and Sam smiled encouragingly. âSam says: touch your ear.â
When they all did, Sam nodded. âTouch your other ear.â
Everybody held still, fingers on the ears they had originally touched.
Sam beamed. âEasy, players, right?â
âYou say that now,â Brennan said darkly. âWhich makes it worse, because all you're doing is setting us up for failure.â
Sam gasped, pretending offence. âWould I do that?â
âYes,â Brennan and Grant replied in unison, which drew a grin from the Doctor and set Sam off chuckling.
âAnd I'm not having it,â Brennan continued, leaning his elbows against his podium and pointing at Sam with the hand not touching his ear. âYou better watch yourself, because I know how this game works, and you're not going to get one over on me.â
âStrong words, Brennan!â Sam said, clearly delighted by this response. âOkay, then, let's start making things a bit more interesting!â
The game continued as per Sam Says usual, some rounds done as a group and some individual. Points were won, sure, but lost slightly more frequently, and even the Doctor found he was having to concentrate to avoid getting caught in the host's traps.Â
It was fun. Genuinely, it was like playing a game with friends, and the Doctor felt himself leaning into it. There wasn't any sign of dangerâmaybe there wasn't a mystery to solve at all, and the TARDIS just decided he needed a total break.Â
Well, probably not. But the way things were going, he was able to let himself hope.Â
âAlright, players,â Sam said a good few rounds in, just as pleasantly as he would start any other question, and the screen behind him dinged as a new prompt popped up. âSurvive the death beam.â
For a second, everything was frozen perfectly still.Â
And then came the crash, the explosive noise of heavy machinery moving relentlessly through a drywall set.
The Doctor was already moving. âEveryone down!â
âDuck!â Brennan yelled at the same time.
The two of them hit the ground within milliseconds of each other, but Grant was still paralysed in the face of the giant, science-fiction type laser cannon that had just ploughed through the wall.Â
It whined ominously, screaming its way to fever pitch. And then a sharp pain in Grantâs ankle made him stagger, pitching forwards onto the carpet behind the podiums as the Doctor rolled away to avoid getting pinned.
âSorry, babes,â the Doctor whispered. âBut it was either kick you to get you down, orââ
A hideous metallic screech ripped through the air, and all three of them could feel the crackle of ozone as a beam of energy swept across what had, moments ago, been neck height.
ââŚOr that,â the Doctor finished with a grimace.
âJesus fucking Christ,â Grant breathed, suddenly very conscious of every inch of his 6â9 frame. âThanks.â
âWell done, players!â Sam exclaimed delightedly from above them. âBut⌠sorry, I didnât say âSam saysâ, so thatâs a point off for everyone.â
âWhat the fuck!â Brennan snapped.
âAre you actually insane?â Grant demanded at the same time, his voice overlapping with Brennanâs.
In response, Sam just wheezed with laughter. âYou can come back to your podiums,â he said, cheerfully ignoring them.
Nobody moved.
âVery good!â he acknowledged, and even without seeing his face, the grin was obvious in his voice. âOkay, Sam says: come back to your podiums.â
Although the words were innocuous, and his tone was just as light and breezy as usual, there was nevertheless an edge hiding just underneath the surface. And while the death beam loomed large in the minds of all three players, it was impossible to consider disobedience as an option.
Slowly, they stood, returning to their places. Now they had the time to look at it properly, the death beam was even more sinister, and Brennan and Grant both kept flicking nervous glances its way, ready to move if it looked like it was charging up again.
The Doctor, however, was focused purely on the man standing in front of them. Unbothered, Sam met his gaze like a challenge, a mischievous smile playing about his lips.
âOh, youâll love this one,â he said, and the screen changed. âSam says, starting with Grant: say my name.â
Grant frowned in confusion, but answered quickly nonetheless. âSam Reich?â
The man himself shrugged tolerantly, moving on. âBrennan?â
Brennan just stared at him coolly. âDo you take me for a fool?â
âWell caught, Brennan!â Sam said happily. âSam says: say my name.â
âSam,â Brennan replied, suspicion clear in his voice. âSamuel Dalton Reich.â
He nodded, still with a hint of indifference. âAnd lastly, Doctor.â His smile broadened. âSam says: say my name.â
It was easy. Too easy. And as the Doctor looked into the eyes of the man calling himself Sam Reich, he felt his hearts stutter in recognition, because something had changed. He wasnât hiding himself anymore, and while the face was different yet again, the Doctor would know the shape of that soul anywhere. It was impossible. It was inevitable.
âYou canât be,â he breathed.Â
Sam smirked, leaning in across his podium. âOh, but Doctor⌠Iâve been here the whole time,â he stage-whispered with a wink.
âHe said you lost,â the Doctor said, shaking his head, looking wrong-footed for the first time that Brennan and Grant could recall. âYou lost, and he trapped you.â
The other two watched, uncomprehending, but Sam just smiled, drumming his fingers against the podium with an audible beat, fast but distinct. Four taps, four taps, four taps. âIâm waiting.â
The Doctor took a slow, deep breath. Set his jaw.Â
âMaster.â

sorry i'm just thinking about the whole circumstances of the shooting again and how absolutely batshit insane that was???????? like. first they had carla observe eddie and ana and insinuate ana wasn't what eddie wanted as she told him, 'just make sure you're following your heart, not christopher's.' and had eddie's face go on a Journey. then 20 minutes later, eddie gets shot in broad daylight and it was filmed Like That with everything slowing down and going completely silent as he and buck stared at each other and buck is covered in eddie's blood and eddie is falling and buck is shoved to the ground by mehta and eddie is dying but one of the last things he does before he falls unconscious is look at buck one more time and reach out for him and then buck rOLLS UNDER A FIRETRUCK in the middle of active fire to get to him and pull him to safety and when they're in the ambulance he's telling eddie over and over again that it's okay, that he's got him, that they're so close to the hospital, he just needs to hang on, and for the .5 seconds eddie is awake he sees the blood on buck's face and ASKS IF HE'S HURT?!!?!?!?!? because he's more concerned about buck than himself????????? and then buck has to go tell chris what happened and he breaks down sobbing when he finds out eddie made it out of surgery because he cannot fathom the idea that he nearly lost him and he takes care of chris while eddie's in hospital without having to be asked and in the brief interlude where taylor kisses him and runs away buck runs to eddie instead of running after taylor and then he Tells eddie that he lost it when he told chris what happened and that it would be better if he was the one who got shot and eddie sits him down and says he changed his will A YEAR AGO after the well so that buck would be chris' legal guardian if he died because no one would ever fight for chris the way buck would (not even his biological family) and then he calls buck evan and tells him he's not expendable and ALL OF THIS HAPPENS and they never talk about it again!!!! until 6x12 where eddie says he remembers getting shot and thinking he was about to die and then nothing else until he woke up in the hospital as if the memory of the whole ordeal isn't probably seared into buck's brain and i'm just??????????? what the fuck was that guys
#911 related#also i'm sorry eddie remembers he's lyING it is so much juicier if he remembers but he doesn't tell buck#because to admit what was going through his head in that moment was too revealing#mine

âSAD TO BREATHE (THE AIR WHEN YOU'RE NOT THERE).
pairing: aitana bonmatĂ x uswnt!reader
synopsis: aitana leaves for the international break and you become a mopey little shit.
word count: 1.1k
a/n: something short and sweet to get me back into the writing groove. the final inspired me this. and yk what this was nice, writing fluff ... is nice (sometimes).
It was embarrassing, really, the way you moped.
Unapologetically, you pouted and rolled around on the couch, convulsing and whining the way a child would beg for more candy. You would be convulsing and whining standing up if you werenât so hung over from all the alcohol and clubbing you had done the past two days (most of which was justified, most of it).
âDo you have to go?â You knew the answer to that. In your mind, you looked very convincing. Youâd hoped Aitana would notice and take pity on you and spare you a glance amidst her running around the house to pack.
âAmor, Iâll be back in two weeks.â Then she switched to Catalan. â[Plus youâre going soon too anyway.]â
It was true that the USWNT camp would assemble tomorrow, but that was one more day you would have liked to spend with Aitana after all the chaos of the Champions League weekend. The whirlwind of Barcelonaâs victory has left little time for you to be alone with her. As soon as the match was over, the celebrations began, and Carla and the media team deemed that most of it should be on record. You wanted to be with your girlfriend so badly, but with Aitana dutifully attending to Carlaâs every PR need, you were left pouting and giving her sad puppy eyes long before this morning.
âBut-butââ you groaned as another wave of the pounding headache hit you, and you lay back down on the cushions.
âYou see, this is why you shouldnât drink so much.â She said, standing in front of you for a second to check that you werenât going to vomit everywhere on the new couch.
âIâm sleepy. Come cuddle, please.â
You watched her stuff another pair of pants into the suitcase that lay open in the middle of the living room. âI didnât ask you to get up with me.â She didnât look amused. Somehow, it spurred you on even more, to know that she was having none of your shit but still engaged.
âBut I always notice when youâre not in bed with me,â you whined again. âCanât sleep after that.â
Aitana shook her head, barely acknowledging your predicament, scanning her suitcase, then went back upstairs.
With Herculean willpower, you stood up and followed her up the stairs. You stopped at the door of your shared bedroom, watching her collect her things from the en-suite bathroom.
âItâs just, Iâm gonna miss you,â you said pathetically, âa lot.â
You didnât know why, but this particular stint between this upcoming international break and the last felt much longer than others. It might have had something to do with the many things that happened during itâthe many trophies that, looking back, you thought the team must have been running on crack to have won all of them whilst keeping yourselves fit and sane. In the middle of all that, you had Aitana, and she had you. The spotlight wasnât easy, but it was alright because you both had each other to return to at the end of the night.
Finally, your pout must have worked because Aitana set her toiletry bag down on the counter when she met your eyes in the mirror. âOh, amor. Why are you acting like a child?â
You didnât care that you were; you just wanted your girlfriend to hold you before duties take her away.
Resting your head on her shoulder, you let out a sigh of desperation when she put her arms around your waist.
âIâm gonna die here, all alone, all by myself, and you donât even care.â
âYouâre not going to die, Y/N,â Aitana scoffed, but she held you closer. â[Iâm sorry we didnât spend much time together after the match]. Winning is exhausting, sĂ?â
You blew a raspberry. âCanât wait for this season to be over.â
âNo, you donât, because then it means weâre going to the Olympics.â
You groaned, and plopped yourself onto the bed. âI donât like playing against you.â
Aitana giggled, the sound floating like music in your ears. âWhy? Scared youâll lose?â
âExcuse you!â You put your hands on your hips. âIâm calling it, you guys versus us in the final. Better start practicing those free kicks.â You grinned and pulled her close, bumping your nose against her stomach.
âWeâll see.â When she leaned down to kiss you, you were ready and puckered your lips, but Aitana had the audacity to evade you and pecked your forehead instead.
She grabbed your chin and finally bestowed on your lips the kiss that you had been yearning for.
Itâs not ever easy to let down your defenses, but with Aitana it felt so easy to do so. You never thought youâd ever be this lucky, certainly not two years ago, when you first transferred to Barcelona and Aitana started consuming your every thought. From the moment you laid eyes upon that beautiful smile and her unstinting kindness, you knew you were gone.
The memory of your first meeting lingered in your mind as your girlfriend dragged her suitcase towards the front door.
âIâll call you when I get to camp,â she said.
âYou promise?â
âYes, promise. Now come here.â Her hands found yours and tugged you forward as you grinned. How could you not smile when her face was so close to yours? âI love you.â
You cupped her face and kissed her softly. âTâestimo.â
âDonât be too sad, okay? It will go by quickly.â At least she pitied you enough to reassure you.
As you watched her get into her Uber, you could only wish she was right.
Aitana kept her promise and FaceTimed you once she had settled at camp a few hours later. The conversation didnât last long, as she had to go quickly after that.
âIâm sorry,â you remembered saying.
âFor what, my love?â
âFor being clingy,â you laughed and shrugged. âI donât know . . .â
It was a surprise, then, after you had packed your things for your early flight back to the States that night, that she called you again before you went to bed.
âBabe, is everything alright?â You had feared the worst when she texted you.
Are you still awake? Can we talk?
Super cryptic.
âYes, everything is good.â After a quick pause, she said, âI couldnât sleep. I miss you.â
A large grin crept onto your lips. âWell well well, how the tables have turned.â
As you heard a groan on the other side of the phone, you laughed, and thanked your lucky star above that you had someone like Aitana to look forward to coming home to.

Eddie Diaz Masterlist
Part 2
Prequel
Summary: (Y/n) and Eddie are close to their due date with their twins. But when they go to a family meal with her siblings and parents, it doesn't go as planned and family secrets are revealed.
(Reader is Buck and Maddie's sister)
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"MumâŚ"
The knocking at the door brought (Y/n) out of her trance and she leaned forward, lowering her head down towards the sink that she was leaning heavily against. Her lower back arched out, trying to relieve the pain in her back that felt like it was snapping in three different places, all at once.
Tears welled up in the corners of her eyes and she couldn't stop them from falling down her face as her nails started to scratch against the porcelean sink.
A twinge rolled through her back and her knees bent forward into the sink that felt like (Y/n) was about to rip it off the wall.
It took more effort than (Y/n) would of liked for her to open her eyes and it caused more tears to trickle down her face which she hastily brushed aside. She didn't want Chris to notice she had been crying, it would only panic him and that wasn't fair.
She tried to straighten up but the movement caused her spine to click oddly and send a loud crack through the air which had her quivering on the spot.
One hand moved to her lower back and the other pushed up off the sink that had been keeping her upright for a while now.
(Y/n) danced her eyes around the bathroom for the rest of the clothes she had brought in with her.
"Mum," Chris knocked again, followed by a giggle that almost lifted (Y/n)'s heart. She knew he was getting impatient both to use the bathroom and for her to hurry up because Buck was coming over.
He was picking (Y/n) and Eddie up and taking them round to Maddie and Chimney's apartment. Chris knew this, he knew his uncle wasn't going to see him for long and he knew Carla would be round anytime now so she could babysit him for the evening. But Chris was still excited to see his uncle even for a few minutes and he had a few games picked out for him and Carla to play tonight.
"I'm coming, just- just one minute."
Her legs quivered when she slowly eased down to sit on the toilet so she could get dressed without falling over. She kicked the lounge set she had stole from Eddie this morning to one side. The shorts had been a little uncomfy because they didn't stretch properly over her stomach anymore, but there was very little that still fit (Y/n) these days.
She reached out for her maternity leggings and when she stood up, she grumbled to herself and raked them upwards until they were over her underwear.
They didn't feel as comfy as they used to. Not now her stomach yet again seemed to stretch and grow in the last week. There was less than two weeks left until (Y/n)'s due date and she was becoming restless. Her stomach was bigger than ever, the twins were twisting and kicking and moving all the time and making it so hard for (Y/n) to try and sleep or sit down without any discomfort.
And now her back ache seemed to triple in the last two weeks and she didn't know what to do with herself.
She dragged the leggings as high around her bump as she could before she reached out for her dress. Another maternity dress that (Y/n) wasn't fond of wearing. It had been alright in the beginning, but now most of her dresses looked strange and just made her look an odd, rounded shape. (Y/n) had been living in Eddie's clothes these last two months but even his clothes were starting to become tight.
Tears welled up in her eyes again when she dragged the dress down over her bump.
This wouldn't do.
(Y/n) wasn't going to a family meal looking like this. She looked like a strawberry. An oddly shaped, deformed strawberry, thin on the top and wide around the middle.
Her back strained as she grumbled and fought to get the dress off again. She looped it over her arm and grabbed the loungewear set she had worn all afternoon.
When she finally opened the bathroom door, Chris grinned cheesily and flashed his teeth up at her. He wormed his arms around her and gave her a hug, nuzzling his face into her bump before they switched places and he headed into the bathroom.
Her hand pressed against the wall, using it as leverage to get herself further down the hall towards the bedroom. She had only just got up and already she wanted to sit back down again. She just wanted to sit down and try and get some sleep which had been evading her for the last week or so. (Y/n) had never had to take so may naps during the day as she did now to catch up on all the sleep she lost when she couldn't get comfy at night.
Something soft formed on her lips when she headed into the bedroom and looked over at Eddie.
He was stood in front of the mirror, buckling up his belt and tucking his shirt into his high-waisted jeans that fit snugly over his waist.
(Y/n) liked the shirt he was wearing. He had a light beige button up shirt on that looked a size too small for him. It stuck to his shoulders like glue, tensed and bunched up around the elbows whenever he flexed his arms and his chest was straining against the buttons that looked like they were about to pop. But he looked good.
His head turned in her direction and he quirked a brow as he looked her up and down. Stood there near the bed in her leggings and her bra and most of her stomach exposed for his flooded eyes to drink in and observe.
"Are you going like that?" He danced his eyes up and down her frame while he turned away from the mirror to face her instead.
"The dress didn't look right, think I'll have to raid you instead."
She tossed them in the hamper and looked in the wardrobe for a shirt that would look half decent on her and not make her look a fool or like a football. Her eyes locked on a dark navy blue button up and she swiped it from the wardrobe, smothering a groan as she clicked her spine into place, again, and dragged the shirt over her head.
"Oh no." Her head tilted to one side as she tried her best to wriggle into the shirt.
A quiet grumble left her lips and she felt like crying again when she tried to stretch the shirt over her large bump. When she pulled the shirt down, she gasped as the top few buttons popped undone. These kind of shirts used to hang off (Y/n)'s frame and stretch down to her thighs. Not anymore. Eddie's clothes always used to be loose because her husband was taller and broader than her. But now his clothes didn't stretch over her bump anymore.
She tried again to pull it down a bit more but the buttons kept popping open.
Her lower lip sucked between her teeth to stop herself from crying as she undid the buttons at the bottom of the shirt and stretched it down before doing up the buttons near her chest. It would be better to let her stomach be on show rather than her cleavage, and she had her leggings pulled up as high as she could get them.
She fiddled and pulled the shirt to try and cover her cleavage, but she paused and held her breath when a pair of arms circled around her waist.
"Looking good." Eddie murmured, punctuating his words with a kiss against her shoulder and travelling his lips up to the side of her neck.
He slid his hands beneath her shirt and danced his fingers across her stomach and beneath her leggings that were pulled up near her belly button. His words made (Y/n) smile but she didn't quite believe him. She didn't feel like she looked good when her leggings were getting tight, her dresses didn't look right on her anymore and even Eddie's clothes were starting to become too small for her.
"Hm, I don't think so."
"Why not?"
The genuine disappointment in Eddie's voice had (Y/n) shivering and she leaned her head back on his shoulder, pressing her forehead against his neck. She felt him lean his cheek on top of her head while his elbows pressed into her waist so his arms could squeeze her lovingly into his chest.
"Look at me, I can't even wear your clothes anymore." Her hands travelled down to hold Eddie's wrists and she lifted her head from his shoulder when Eddie leaned forward into her.
He nudged the collar of her shirt out his way, moving his pointed chin across her shoulder so he could pepper kisses across the front of her neck, feeling each shallow breath she took.
"I am looking, and I love what I see." He punctuated each word with a kiss up and down her neck before he lifted his chin and connected their lips. She felt him murmur "All my girls," against her lips and his hands pressed into her stomach as if to reassure her and punctuate his words even further.
They broke apart when they both heard Chris's excited squeal of "Carla's here!" and the sound of his footsteps clamouring down the hall to go and let her in. That was good. That meant that whenever Buck arrived, they could head off to Maddie's house.
(Y/n) wasn't ready. As much as she loved her big sister and her twin brother, it wasn't just them that they were having dinner with.
Their parents would be there.
Their parents had made the trip down since (Y/n) was a week away from her due date and Maddie had two months left before she would be ready to have her baby. This would be the first time they had seen their parents in over a year, the first time both sisters would see and interact with them since being pregnant.
And (Y/n) knew just what their mother would be like. Insufferable. She would be nit picking at any little thing she could, commenting on (Y/n) choice of clothing, how big she looked now, if she had decided to have a home birth or a hospital birth. Anything she didn't approve of would be outspoken and (Y/n) wasn't ready for that.
It was why Chris wasn't coming along with them tonight, it was just a small family gathering and (Y/n) didn't want him there in case her parents said anything out of order or upset him.
They barely acknowledged him as their grandson and they weren't so keen on him calling (Y/n) his mum because biologically, she wasn't. But they couldn't understand that (Y/n) loved him as her own and Chris thought of her as his real mum.
"Do you really think I look okay? You know what they're like." (Y/n) glanced towards the mirror before she looked over her shoulder at her husband.
He didn't look phased or disapproving and all she could see in his eyes was love and a while lot of lust.
His hands continued to roam across her stomach and as if to prove his silent point, he rolled her shirt up so it bunched beneath her bra, exposing her stomach to his eyes.
"Mi amor, you look beautiful⌠although I'd prefer you without these on." He gave a sharp tug on her shirt and pulled the elastic waistband on her leggings so they snapped back on her hips. Not enough to hurt, but enough to send an electric jolt through her nerves.
"EddieâŚ" (Y/n) latched her fingers into his hair when he shifted round to stand in front of her.
Her head tilted to one side and she watched with a quickening heartbeat as Eddie's eyes clouded over. Her fingers dragged through his wavy curls and her other hand clamped down on his shoulder while he roamed his hands across her stomach and round her hips. She tightened her fingers in his hair when she felt him try to drag down the hem of her leggings.
If he started this game they wouldn't end up leaving on time, and her brother was going to be round at any moment.
Her weight shifted from foot to foot when Eddie started a trail of kisses along her stomach and she could of cried when she heard him muttering 'beautiful' between each kiss.
"Dad!"
Eddie grumbled quietly against (Y/n)'s stomach but his lips curved into a wide smirk when he felt a kick beneath his lips. He pressed a few more butterfly kisses against her skin, running his fingertips across her hips before he pushed to stand back up to his normal height.
His fingers glided up her sides and he stole a kiss while he slowly pulled her shirt back down from where it was bunched beneath her bra. He much preferred the sight of her without anything on and he wanted nothing more than to strip her down here and now in the bedroom. But they both knew they had no time for that. Not now, not yet.
He stole a feverish kiss from her lips, inhaling every ounce of air she had in her lungs and (Y/n) could barely see when his fingers brushed beneath her chin and his thumb swiped across her lips when they parted.
(Y/n) moved her hands to her hair, fiddling to put it into a bobble while she slowly followed Eddie out the bedroom.
Once her hair was up, (Y/n) trailed one hand along the wall and pressed the other to her lower back. She couldn't move very fast these days, not when her back was throbbing and her stomach was weighing her down. She constantly felt like she needed to walk doubled over to ease the pain in her back and let her stomach hang forward like it clearly wanted to.
The twins were weighing her down and (Y/n) was desperate for her body to go into labour. She was close to her due date now. The midwife had warned her that she might go into early labour since she was having a multiple pregnancy.
She and Eddie had been on red alert since she hit thirty three weeks, but she was almost thirty nine weeks now and she hadn't gone into labour yet.
Eddie kept saying the girls were clearly too happy and comfy to meet them.
While Eddie headed into the dining room where Chris and Carla were, (Y/n) aimed for the living room. She wanted to sit down, again. She got one foot into the living room before the doorbell rang and had her groaning and turning in the other direction towards the hall.
"Chris, Buck's here." She could hear Chris dropping whatever was in his hands onto the table and she knew she heard Eddie moving about, but (Y/n) was closer to the door than the boys.
As predicted, when (Y/n) opened the door, it was her brother standing there on the other side. With a bright smile and sunglasses pushed up into his hairline now that he was on the doorstep to his second home.
"Come in." (Y/n) shuffled out the way and beckoned Buck inside, noticing the smirk on his lips when he looked up and down her attire. She knew she looked far from her best, doubled forward and tiredness clearly written on her face. When she noticed him raise a brow, she looked down and gave her shirt another tug so it covered her stomach a bit more.
"Are we ready for a family gathering?" He headed inside when (Y/n) moved out the way but he stayed close.
"No." (Y/n) grumbled, binding her arms around her waist while Chris pelted forward and barelled into Buck. She leaned back into Eddie when he stood behind her with his arms around her and his lips pressed against the back of her head.
She just wanted tonight to go smoothly and swiftly, but (Y/n) had a feeling tonight wouldn't go well at all.
***
(Y/n) closed her eyes and leaned her head back until she could tuck her face into Eddie's neck. She felt his arm loop around the back of her shoulders, holding her against his chest while he put his drink back down on his table and wormed his other arm around her waist.
His lips pressed to the top of her head and his hand feathered up and down her stomach while he glanced around the apartment. Out of them all here, Chimney seemed the most relaxed. Both twins were uneasy, they never knew how to act when they were around their parents. And Maddie seemed uncomfortable now the attention was on her. As for Eddie, he didn't get along well with Phillip and Margaret. Not after a family meal went wrong a year ago just before he and (Y/n) got married. And Eddie ended up raising his voice at Margaret after the way she spoke to (Y/n) and then subsequently told Phillip to fuck off.
They were being civil now because they both knew they had been in the wrong and they were trying to patch things up now both their daughters were about to become mothers.
Eddie was part of the family and if they wanted (Y/n) to stay in their lives, they had to accept Eddie too.
"You okay?" He whispered against the shell of her ear and pecked the side of her head.
"Stiff⌠give me a push?" She pushed forward, one hand on the table and the other on Eddie's thigh. Her lips curved into a smile when both Eddie's hands moved to her hips and he kissed the back of her neck, carefully helping her up to her feet.
Dinner had tasted great but the atmosphere had been a little tense. No one knew what to say or how to act and now, (Y/n) just wanted to go home. She wanted to curl up in bed with Eddie and try to get a proper night sleep.
Once she was up, (Y/n) gave Eddie's shoulder a squeeze and leaned over to kiss the top of his head. She felt his hand linger on her hip while she rounded the table and slowly padded into the kitchen to get another drink.
Her elbows dug into the kitchen counter and she arched out her lower back, smothering a groan when one of the twins started kicking. She wondered if her mum had been in this much discomfort when she was pregnant with her and Buck. Their mum never spoke about when she had them or when they were little, the only thing she used to say was she had them by C-section and that Buck had been perfectly healthy. While (Y/n) had a few problems to begin with.
"Are you good?"
A soft smile pulled at (Y/n)'s lips and she nodded when she felt Maddie's hand on her lower back and then her sister's chin was perched on her shoulder.
Maddie was the mother (Y/n) and Buck always wished they had. She was the one who patched them up and taught them to ride their bikes, she took them to appointments and walked them home from school and helped them with their homework. She gave them the unconditional love their parents didn't know how to give.
Sometimes when she was a teen, (Y/n) thought about telling people she didn't have any parents. She thought about saying that she was raised by her big sister because in a way, she was. It felt like life would have been better if she and Buck cut all ties with their parents rather than continuing to try and win their love and affection when it never worked.
"Yeah, just a bit of back ache, I'm good."
"Not long now." Maddie whispered, giving (Y/n)'s arm a squeeze just as their mother walked into the kitchen.
It wouldn't be long now and (Y/n) would have her two girls, then Maddie would have her daughter and they would all have a bigger extended family together. They would raise their three girls together and make sure all of them had a different, more stable and loving upbringing than the Buckley kids ever had.
"Maybe you should try straightening your posture honey, walking like this won't help you."
A tight-lipped smile grimaced on (Y/n)'s lips as she nodded but stayed leaning over the counter. She felt comfier and more at ease leaning over like this and (Y/n) didn't care about her posture. She felt weighed down and she would do whatever necessary to try and feel more at ease.
Eddie never said anything about her posture. He was forever wrapping his arms around her and holding her stomach up or lying with her and trying to find different positions that relieved her back ache and made her feel better.
"What are you wearing, honey?" Margaret danced her eyes up and down (Y/n)'s frame while (Y/n) slowly straightened up now she felt a bit better.
"Eddie's shirt." She shrugged and took another gulp of her drink but the way her mum narrowed her eyes and looked at her made (Y/n) shiver.
"Maybe you should try some bigger clothes, ones that actually fit⌠you are quite big now."
She was sure Margaret tried to reach out to rub her stomach but before she could, Eddie was in the way. His jaw was locked tight and his eyes were narrowed while his brows furrowed. He took a deep breath and walked up behind the girls, his hands on (Y/n)'s waist and his lips against her temple.
He kept his left hand on (Y/n)'s hip and his chest pressed into hers, her bump hidden between them so Margaret couldn't get too close. He reached around (Y/n) for one of the beer bottles on the counter behind her before he turned to look at his mother in law.
"It's almost as if we're having twins." He deadpanned, about to say something else until he felt (Y/n)'s hands on his chest and her lips kissing the side of his neck.
"Eddie," She murmured softly into his neck, a quiet warning sign for him not to start a fight right here and now.
"Let's sit down." Maddie's voice broke the tension in the air and she motioned her hands towards the living room where Chimney, Buck and Phillip were all sat with a drink each.
Eddie's arm looped around (Y/n)'s waist and he followed behind her, his lips stuck to the top of her head as he held both their drinks in his free hand. He took a quick look around the living room, debating where they should sit so they wouldn't have to be right next to Margaret who liked to cause arguments recently.
He took note of Phillip sitting in the armchair in the far corner and Buck was on the end of the sofa nearest to his dad. With that in mind, Eddie headed over to the sofa and sat down next to his brother in law and put their drinks on the coffee table. But when (Y/n) went to sit next to him, he shook his head.
He shuffled back and sat up straight, parting his legs with a smile that had (Y/n)'s skin heating up and made her heart add in two extra beats.
(Y/n) felt Eddie's hands on her waist and she pressed one hand onto his thigh while Buck reached out and held her left hand to help her sit down without breaking eye contact or conversation with their dad.
Both Eddie's arms circled around her middle so his hands could spread out across her stomach and his knees pressed into her thighs. Lovingly squeezing her into his embrace.
She felt Buck pat her knee and smile softly over at her while Maddie sank down on (Y/n)'s right next to her and Eddie. And Chimney perched on the arm of the sofa behind Maddie so their mum could sit on the other armchair. It was a bit of a tight fit for them all on the sofa, but they made it work. It was comfortable, cosy.
(Y/n) let herself slouch down into Eddie's chest a little more to try and get comfy and her hands moved down to hold Eddie's wrists. While his hands started to draw aimless patterns up and down her stomach. She knew he was waiting for one of the twins to start kicking or moving around. It seemed to be Eddie's mission to feel every movement during this pregnancy and she couldn't wait to see what he would be like once he finally had their girls in his arms.
"Here, we got you girls a few things."
Her attention turned to the left and she let her cheek flop onto Eddie's shoulder, nuzzling her nose against his shirt while she looked over at her dad.
He got up and came back a few seconds later, placing a few things down on the table in front of each of them.
Something softened in (Y/n)'s eyes as Eddie leaned them both forward so she could reach out and take a look. She caught her sister's eye and both of them shared a smile as they had a look. It was mainly a few baby grows, ranging from Winnie The Pooh to blushing pink, with a few teddies in the mix.
(Y/n) handed a few across to Buck so he could look through and held them up so Eddie could see. Although his chin was already perched on her shoulder so he could take a look.
"Thank you."
"These are so sweet," Maddie folded the clothes back up once she and Chimney had taken a look through before she reached out to look at the teddy bears.
The eldest Buckley sibling couldn't help but notice there were more personalised items in her pile than in her sister's. The onesies Maddie had said things like 'mummy's girl' or 'Granny's little star' and there was a rattle and a Winnie the Pooh bear. Whereas the onesies (Y/n) had were plain except for the one Pooh Bear one she had seen, and there weren't any rattles or bibs and only three teddies.
She tried not to overthink but when she looked at her younger sister, (Y/n) had already put the presents back down on the table. If she had noticed the differences, she wasn't letting it show. And something told Maddie the twins had both noticed, judging by the way (Y/n) snuggled further into Eddie and how Buck ran his hand up and down his freshly shaved jaw, hiding his displeasure.
"I can't believe it, three grandkids at once. You're first kids," Margaret reached across and ran her hand up and down Maddie's knee but she looked across at Buck when he scoffed.
"Chris is your first grandkid."
"Come on Buck, he doesn't count." Eddie muttered quietly, reaching across to grab his beer bottle and take a long swig. He wasn't bothered because Chris didn't care. He didn't think of (Y/n)'s parents as his grandparents. He had Eddie's mum and dad and he had (Y/n) as his mum and another aunt in Maddie and a great uncle in Buck. He didn't want or need anyone else.
And it wasn't as if Margaret and Phillip were around often anyway, they were barely parents to (Y/n) and Buck as it was. The twins didn't care about having a relationship with them anymore.
(Y/n) had her siblings, she had Eddie and Chris and now she had her daughters. She didn't need anyone else and Bobby and Athena seemed to have taken Buck and her under their wing and accepted them as part of their family so all in all, the twins had parents with Bobby and Athena.
"Evan, I meant that this is their first pregnancies, and both at the same time, it's so lovely." Margaret tried to smile before her eyes locked with (Y/n) and something flashed over her face. "Oh, well, the first pregnancy that's worked out, hm?"
Eddie's shoulders tensed and pulled upwards as he slammed his beer bottle back down on the coffee table.
"Jesus Christ." Anger seeped into his voice that was gritty and hard but oddly quiet.
(Y/n) could feel him tensing up behind her, one hand still on her stomach while the other hand dragged through his hair. He leaned forward, tugging (Y/n) back into his chest because he could feel the tremor that shuddered through her system. And his lips pressed against the back of her head, breathing into her hair to try and calm himself down.
"Mum!" Buck barked and leaned his elbow on the arm rest, propping his head up on his hand as he shook his head in anger.
How could she be that rude and inconsiderate? How could she not see that saying something like that was hurtful and would easily upset both (Y/n) and Eddie? That wasn't the kind of thing she should say, especially not to her daughter when she was almost nine months pregnant.
Part of (Y/n) wished they'd never agreed to come here tonight, it wasn't worth the hassle of being around their parents. And the other part of her wished Maddie never told their parents about the miscarriage she had not long after she and Eddie got engaged.
But (Y/n) had been twenty weeks along when she miscarried and by then Maddie had just told their parents the good news that (Y/n) would be the first of the three siblings to have a baby.
"Alright, alright let's not start arguing." Phillip held his hands out in front of them to try and calm the room down while Chimney sat forward on the arm rest.
"Uh, what's in that box over there?" Chimney pointed across towards the pale cream box he could see near the window. Maybe that would prove to be a great distraction for them all and lead them back onto a more pleasant talk for the evening.
"Oh," Margaret seemed to become animated again and she got up to retrieve the box that had Maddie written in cursive writing across the top with glittered letters. "The baby box I made when we had Maddie, here. I thought you might like it, maybe you could make one for your little girl."
A tremor tore through (Y/n) when she looked at the box and she couldn't help but push back into Eddie who gripped her tighter. He leaned his head round to look at her, wondering what was wrong, but he could read her expression like a book he knew off by heart.
All night while they had been here and the other infrequent times her parents had been down while she and Maddie had been pregnant, they had been more pleased for Maddie than for (Y/n). They asked Maddie questions, they wanted to keep copies of her scan photos and know if she had names and see the nursery all sorted out.
Whereas with (Y/n), they seemed to play along like they were feigning interest. Eddie knew it hurt. He knew no matter how much of a brave face (Y/n) tried to wear, it upset her to know she and Buck had to fight for attention that Maddie got without question.
(Y/n) rested her head back on Eddie's shoulder and closed her eyes, looping both hands around his bicep as she looked at her sister. She didn't want to look in the box. (Y/n) didn't want to know what little treasures their mum had kept from when Maddie was little.
But when she felt her twin lean over with one hand on her arm and the other rummaging through the box, she knew Buck felt it too. The slight displacement they had suffered through all their lives.
"That's so cool, did you bring ours?"
One little look at her mum was enough to cause a callous smile to cross (Y/n)'s face and she couldn't hide the tears welling up in her eyes.
"We don't have one Buck. Do we?"
Both parents stayed quiet, sharing a few looks with each other while Buck gripped (Y/n)'s arm and leaned closer to her as if to comfort his twin. He could feel her heart breaking and it made his own chest tighten like he was about to have a heart attack.
(Y/n) wasn't sure what Eddie was about to whisper in her ear when he kissed her neck, but he didn't get chance to say when (Y/n) looked at her sister. She noticed Maddie trying to scrunch up a picture and slide it beneath her leg, something she always did when she was trying to hide something. Whether it was a bad report card she didn't want their parents seeing or a party invite she was trying to hide from the twins to make a big surprise.
She uncurled one hand from Eddie's bicep and snatched the picture before Maddie had chance to stuff it under her leg or the sofa.
She recognised that red bike.
It was the one they used to have in the garage, the one that presumably had been Maddie's when she was younger because their mother kept it even when Maddie outgrew it. She wouldn't allow the twins to touch it, let alone try and learn how to ride a bike with that red, tattered old thing.
But that wasn't Buck on the bike. (Y/n) knew what her twin looked like as a child, and this wasn't him. And when she turned the picture round and saw the date on the back, she noticed it was over a year before the twins had even been born.
"Who is that?"
Eddie peered over her shoulder and Buck leaned over her arm to get a look, but when he looked at their parents, both of them had gone as white as paper. Tears were welling up in their mother's eyes and their dad was scratching the back of his neck, a nervous habit he had never been able to hide.
It was the tears in Maddie's eyes that had both twins on edge. Why was she covering her mouth and trying not to cry? Why was she looking at them with such sorrow like that?
"Daniel."
"We, um⌠we had him two years after Maddie. He had leukaemia, he, he passed when you were only babies."
Every thought possible swirled round in (Y/n)'s head as she felt both her brother's hands on her shoulders like he didn't believe what he was hearing. This couldn't be possible. Why wouldn't they tell them? Why would they keep such a secret? Why would they keep this all to themselves? Were the twins not worthy of knowing they had a big brother they never got to meet?
"Wh- no, no. No you never told us- why wouldn't you tell us something like this? Why wouldn't you acknowledge him around us?" Buck's voice grew louder and louder with each word as his head snapped from left to right, trying to look between his parents who he didn't recognise right now.
There was no plausible explanation for hiding something like this. If Buck ever had kids and God forbid he lost one, he wouldn't erase them from existence and pretend they never happened. They had never celebrated Daniel's birthday. They never had pictures of him in the house- there were hardly any pictures of the twins in the house as it was. No one uttered his name or had any memory of him in the house.
"We lost him, Evan. We didn't want to live our lives mourning him-"
"So you chose to forget him?"
"Evan we would never-"
"No, oh no. You⌠you didn'tâŚ" The words wouldn't come out. All (Y/n) could do was let the tears fall from her eyes as she began to shake in Eddie's arms.
"Baby, what's wrong?" Both Eddie's hands moved to her stomach as he sat up straighter behind her and leaned round. Was she having pains? Did she not feel well, was she going to be sick? He couldn't work out what was wrong and neither could Buck who stopped rambling so he could reach out for his sister's hand.
But when Maddie tried to take (Y/n)'s hand, the younger girl shook her off and leaned into Eddie.
"You s-said I wasn't planned, that I- I was the surprise, but Buck wasn't." (Y/n)wiped her eyes but the tears continued to fall. "We were donor babies, weren't we?"
The way Margaret's lower lip wobbled and Phillip refused to look at either of them while he pressed his hands to his mouth secured (Y/n)'s answer.
They were donor babies.
They were designed embryos, made with the exact blood and bone marrow type to match the brother they never knew they had. They were supposed to save him. They weren't wanted, neither of them were born to be wanted or loved or cherished. They were born specifically to save the child their parents did want and they couldn't even do that right.
Everything seemed to slot into place and the more pieces that fitted together, the more (Y/n) started to feel sick and feel bile rising to the back of her throat.
All those times their parents never made a fuss on their birthdays, all those times they barely heard the words 'I love you' unless it was Maddie telling them. Each time they had to get hurt for attention or run away to cause a panic and be shown that they were valued and cherished. Each time (Y/n) asked about when they were born and their mother refused to answer, this was why.
Their mum always used to say that having twins was a surprise. That (Y/n) wasn't planned, she was a surprise since she was the younger twin by five minutes. This was why. They planned to have one more child to save their son but they ended up with (Y/n) too. Neither of them were truly wanted, they were just needed for a short while and then couldn't be returned after they were no longer of use.
This was why the twins always felt disconnected and why there were barely any photos of them growing up. This was why all of the pictures of (Y/n) and Buck as babies were with no one holding them. (Y/n) had been the sick twin, stuck in the hospital for two weeks before coming home and there was only one photo of her in the hospital when she was born.
Did they even visit her when she was sick? Did they check on her, or did they just take what they needed from her and Evan and stay with Daniel the whole time?
"All these years. All this time, we felt so out of place and alone, and this is why. You never wanted us. Did we remind you of him? Did we fail you every day we woke up and he didn't?"
"Evan please, we tried our best-"
"We just wanted you to love us!"
The sheer outburst and the way that Buck bolted up from the sofa sent everyone reeling.
The artery in his neck was close to bursting, his hand was pointing out at his parents and his jaw was grinding tight and about to dislocate. His body was shaking from adrenaline as he glared at them. His parents had lied to him all his life. His big sister who was the only one who loved him, she never told him why he felt so out of place and unloved and misunderstood. The only person he could rely on was his twin and she felt exactly the same as him.
Maddie was leaning into Chimney who had an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side. Margaret was crying into her hands, unable to look away from her son for the first time in a long while, and Phillip was now stood up, running his fingers through his hair as he tried not to breakdown.
And then there was (Y/n). Silently crying, rocking back and forth with Eddie's arms around her and his lips pressed against the back of her head.
"I walk into fire every day of my life because of you. I tried everything to get your approval, to get you to love me, to love us the way you do Maddie, but nothing would ever work. And now I know why, because we failed you."
When Maddie tried again to reach out for her sister, she gasped when (Y/n) all but slapped her touch away.
"You should have t-told us." All those times (Y/n) and Buck asked why their parents didn't pay them any attention or turn up for school plays or listen to them or even love them. Maddie had the answers and she never said anything. She should have told them the moment the twins moved out. She had years to tell them and she never mentioned it. Not once.
(Y/n) ran her hands across her face, brushing the tears away before she moved her hands to Eddie's thighs to push herself up.
"I wanna go home."
She could feel both twins wriggling and waking up and she had to lean forward to ease the pain in her stomach and the horrible twinging pains shooting up and down her spine.
One hand pressed to her stomach and the other reached out for Eddie's shoulder, knowing that if she didn't try and prop herself up she was going to collapse. She didn't want to stay here any longer. (Y/n) wanted to go home. She wanted to leave and be alone with Eddie and be home where she felt safe enough to cry and scream and let everything sink in and wash over her.
She felt Eddie grip her elbow and his other hand moved round to her waist as he stood behind her.
"Guys, you don't have to leave." Chimney pushed up from the sofa along with Maddie who tried to reach out for them. But she pushed back into Chimney, smothering a cry when (Y/n) shook her off and moved away.
"I feel sick⌠please, take me home." (Y/n) pressed her face into Eddie's arm and shrugged back into him when her dad tried to reach out for her.
Why were they all trying to grab her? Why couldn't they just let her go home? She didn't want to be here. She didn't feel safe here. Maddie lied to her. Their parents lied to them their entire lives and now the twins understood why their parents looked at them the way they did. She wanted to leave.
"Alright baby, we're leaving now."
Eddie moved his hands to (Y/n)'s hips and carefully guided her forward while he felt Buck follow swiftly behind them since he had drove them here. And he wasn't staying here to continue arguing. He didn't want to see his parents again for an indefinite amount of time and he wasn't going to forgive Maddie yet for this. He wanted to be with his twin or be on his own.
Reaching across, Eddie snatched (Y/n)'s bag from the kitchen counter and looped it over his shoulder while Buck grabbed his keys and opened the door.
His hands tightened on (Y/n)'s hips as he leaned around her when (Y/n gripped his wrist tightly and moved her other hand to her stomach as they shuffled out the door. Her lower abdomen was aching. She couldn't help but lean forward once they were in the hall and she felt like crumpling over and sliding down to her knees.
"Baby?"
Fright dwelled in Eddie's stomach and pierced through his heart with doses of adrenaline when (Y/n) tilted her head over her shoulder to look up at him. He didn't like the way she tightened her hand around his wrist or how she leaned against the wall while they heard Buck slammed the door closed behind them.
"Hurts."
"What? What hurts?" Buck rested one hand on Eddie's shoulder and leaned over them both to try and figure out what was going on. He could see Eddie shaking his head and groaning while (Y/n) pressed her hand against the wall so she didn't go down on her knees.
"Christ. I hope you're not going into labour, mi amor."
Steveâs mother was the black sheep of her family.
Stella hated the snow, and the isolation of the small town she grew up in. Hated the bright colors, and sheer friendliness of the neighbors. How everyone was always involved in each otherâs business, at all times--and how getting involved meant sharing.
Giving up your time for the greater good.
âWeâre one big family!â Her father had told her, and hadnât understood why she found the concept utterly revolting.
Just like she couldnât understand why they never agreed with her ideas. Things would run so much more smoothly with more rules, better regulations. They didnât need to rely on magic when they had spreadsheets.
Who cared if some people were upset? If some of the workers where put out of jobs, or âhurtâ by her changes?
That was how evolution worked.
The strongest survived, and the business world demanded only the strongest of leaders.
She didnât regret leaving.
Didnât look behind her for a second, all too happy to go to college and find herself a rich man to make miserable.
Even had a child, though they were never her favorite things. Her Steven of course, would be so much different from the children sheâd grown up among or the ones she helped oversee for her father's work.
He wouldnât cry. He wouldnât shriek or scream or make demands of busy adults. Steven would know his place, and he would stay in it until he had grown into a reasonable adult.
No unrealistic expectations, not from her son.
And absolutely, 100%, no magic.
(Unfortunately for Stella Harrington and her relationship with her son, magic does not obey the whims of one person.
Particularly not that kind of magic, one far older than Stella could comprehend.)
See: Steve knew where he came from. Would never say it of course, outright refused to put a name to it.
Knew better, even when he was young, than to speak it aloud.
Though his mother had long abandoned any powers given to her, Steve was still born with his. When lonely, he often found he could wander into a different kind of woods.Â
One absolutely covered in snow.
Steve should have been cold in those woods, but he never was, not even the first time he stumbled into them at the tender age of seven.
These trees never scared him. Not like the ones in his backyard sometimes did.
The whole place felt rather welcoming in a way his own house had never been, and as Steve had stumbled along following the faint glow of lights, he found himself feeling more relaxed.
Happy.
Even at seven, Steve was smart enough to know he needed to turn back, after a while. That his mother would be furious with him if he caused her to miss the meeting she needed to go to.
That he had a responsibility to be where she put him.
He hadnât crested the hill yet. Hadnât quite figured out where the glow was coming from, when he realized he needed to go home--but his trip wasnât wasted.
A baby reindeer distracted him.
It peeked around a tree, and upon seeing him, came dashing his way.
Steve should be scared, would have been scared, but something in him told him this creature was his friend. He held out his hands and greeted it as such.
He was right.
A few more little reindeer came up over the hill, running around him, and together he played what felt like a game as he walked back in the direction he thought his house lay.
Said his goodbyes when the snow started to wane and made promises to return.
Found, sadly, that he wouldnât get another chance too for almost a full year. He was too busy, signed up for multiple sports, handed over to tutors and taught life skills by a parade of nannies, none of whom ever stayed for long.
He dreamed of the snow.
The gentle way the woods felt.
It was what made him tell the lie that let him go back.
Steve was eight by then, and smart to how his parents and nannies worked. That some of them overlapped their stays when his parents went away.
So it was easy to tell Mary that she could go.
That it was okay, really. Carla had just called, she was on her way.
Just like it was easy to tell Carla that his parents' plans had changed. Let her know she wasnât needed after all.
What harm would it do if he was alone for a night? His father kept telling him he was a big boy. Soon heâd be on his own anyway.
The snow found him faster this time, when he went for his walk in the woods.
Delighted, Steve kept an eye out for the reindeer, fingers skittering across tree bark as he looked around, once again tracking the soft glow that came up over the hill.
It was a long walk to that light, but Steve didnât mind.
Not until he heard the crying.
âHello?â Steve called, voice prim and proper as always. It was a little high--Tommy teased him endlessly about it, but he had been assured it would deepen.
The crying didnât stop, but things got quiet for a moment, in the way that happens when someone was trying hard not to be found.
(Steve knew exactly how that felt, not wanting to be found. Wanting to cry for a moment, without someone telling you to toughen up, be a man, âGod Steven youâre too old for all this--â)
âItâs okay!â Steve rushed out, trying to locate where the muffled sounds were coming from before they ran away. âI wonât tell anyone, I promise!â
Which is right about when he almost tripped over the other kid.
He was hunched against a tree, knees drawn into his chest with brown hair hanging into his eyes. His clothes were a odd--a little like how his teacher had made Steve dress when theyâd done a play about the middle ages.
âWhoâre you?â The boy asked defensively, wiping his nose with his sleeve.
âIâm Steve.â He said, before kneeling down himself. âDid you get hurt?â
âNo.â The boy sniffled. After a moment he added; âMâ Eddie.â
His eyes were large, and reminded Steve of a puppy he once saw. All cute and round and shiny.
âI donât think Iâve ever seen you before.â The boy said and it wasnât an accusation, but it wasnât friendly.
âIâm not from around here.â Steve told him. âAt least, I donât think I am.â
It was kind of hard to know, given Steve wasnât sure where here was, exactly--and absolutely knew better than to ask his parents.
âWell then you should go home.â The boy sniffled again.
Steve wasn't put off by it. Tommy had been a lot meaner than this after all, when they'd first met.Â
Given their parents made them play together anyways, Steve felt he he could get this kid to like him too.Â
"I'm gonna, later. I'm looking for something right now though--you wanna come?"Â
Which he felt was a pretty nice offer. Might distract Eddie from whatever was bothering him.
(Steve liked distractions, when he was upset. It made it a lot easier to swallow down the bad feelings.)Â
âYou shouldnât hang around me.â Eddie said suddenly. His nose was as red as his eyes, and he refused to look Steve in the eye as he hunched further into himself. âIâm bad.â
âYouâre not bad.â Steve told him.Â
He got a glare for it.
âHow would you know?â
âI dunno.â Steve stopped, brows furrowing in thought. âI just--kinda do. I always have.â
Which was true. Steve was awfully good at identifying who was good and who was bad, from adults to his fellow classmates. It had gotten him in trouble before his mother had sat him down, and told him he just had a good business sense.
That he needed to keep to himself who was good and who was bad, especially the adults, because it wasnât his place to say such things.
(âBut itâll serve you well in the future.â His mother told him, tucking an errant strand of hair back behind his ear. âParticularly for business deals.â)
âWell youâre wrong then, because I was born bad.â Eddie scoffed, arms crossing over his chest. âEveryone says so!â
It was dramatic as hell, and Steve couldnât help the giggle that escaped him.
âIâm sorry!â He said immediately, when Eddieâs face flushed angrily. âIâm sorry itâs just--you look kinda silly.â
He mimed Eddieâs stance for a moment, including a dramatic little huff of breath. It unbalanced him, and Steve ended up dropping on his butt, which made him to laugh even louder.
âNo one who does that can be bad.â He said finally, through the giggles.Â
âThatâs--stupid. Youâre stupid.â Eddie said, except he was clearly trying to hide his own laugh at Steveâs antics.
âIâm not stupid--and youâre not bad. I promise.â Steve said, before reaching out a hand, one pinkie extended. âIâll swear on it.â
âWhatâre you doing?â Eddie asked him, but he didnât sound sad now. More curious.Â
Curious Steve knew, was a lot better than sad.Â
âYou wrap your pinkie finger with mine. Then itâs a pinkie swear, which is like--unbreakable!â
Thatâs what Carol had told him at least, and so far it had held true. Steve figured it must work doubly so, in a place like this.
Cautiously, Eddie reached out, entwining his pinkie with Steveâs. Like any minute Steve would snatch his hand back, and tell him it was all a joke.
Instead, Steve bobbed their hands up and down once, before letting go and asking; âDo you wanna go find that light with me? I wanna see what it is.â
He pointed up the hill, toward the glow that had haunted his dreams.â
âOh thatâs boring.â Eddie told him, but he had a grin on his face that felt infectious. âItâs just the town. Iâll show you something way better!â
âYeah?â Steve asked, and let Eddie snatch his wrist, launching to his feet and bringing Steve with him.
In doing so his hair blew, revealing that he had pointed ears.
Steve stared at them in awe as Eddie tugged him further into the trees, until they burst into a clearing filled with gingerbread houses. They ranged from teeny tiny, to large enough that Steve and Eddie could walk in them, and it wasnât long before the two started a game of tag, broken only by laughter.Â
In retrospect, this was his downfall.
Because the little gingerbread houses were really cool, and Eddie was a lot of fun. It was easy to play with him--like the two of them had been made for each other.
Steve had never connected like this with a person before. Never had so much fun with someone before.
Not even with Tommy and Carol, his very best friends.
Eddie seemed to feel the same way, and not even an hour into meeting him, Steve knew he would remember this for the rest of his life.
Remember Eddie.
Steve ended up losing track of time. Stayed so long that his lie was discovered.
The person who came looking for him wasnât his parents, but looked weirdly like his mom--if his mom were a boy.
He introduced himself as Steveâs Uncle Nick after he called the two boys to him, hands on his hips in a way Steve kind of wanted to mimic.
Steve knew it to be true, in the same way he knew how to find the forest, and if someone was good or bad. A feeling inside him he could tap into, warm and fuzzy in a way that, should he ever be pressed, he might admit to feeling like magic.
âNow how did you get here?â Uncle Nick asked him, like Steve's presence was a surprising little puzzle.
Knowing better than to lie, sensing that his Uncle would be able to tell if he did anyways, Steve told him the truth.
It got him exactly what he expected, which was an upset adult.
Unlike his mom or dad however, his Uncle didnât yell at him, or grab Steveâs hand in a punishing grip. No nails dug into his skin, no harsh words were hissed. Uncle Nick simply pinched the tip of his nose, before giving a sigh that shook his massive frame.
âYour mom is going to be very upset.â He said finally.
Like Steve didn't know.Â
âI just wanted to see the lights.â
âThe lights--oh.â Uncle Nick glanced over his shoulder. âCould you see them from your house?â
Steve shook his head.
âNo but I could feel them.â
Like a pulse in his chest. A compass, or--a guide.
âHe says he can tell who's naughty or nice.â Eddie chimed in, oddly quiet for how loud he had been. âHe says Iâm good.â
This was said as a challenge, and Steve eyed his new friend out of the corner of his eye. Heâd never dared speak to an adult like that, and was both a little in awe of Eddie doing it, and afraid for him.
Something his Uncle seemed to sense.
âEdward, go home.â He said, firm but kind. Not like how Steve's mom was when she was mad, or his dad when he had a bad day at work.âIâll come talk to you later. Come on Steve, let me walk you back. I best explain this in person.â
Then he took Steveâs hand in his, while Steve called out a goodbye to Eddie over his shoulder.
âYouâll come back and visit, right!?â Eddie yelled back.Â
Steve shouted an affirmative, even knowing it wasnât likely heâd be allowed.
(Wished with all his heart, that he'd be allowed.)Â
âEddie is really good, you know.â Steve said once he no longer could see his new friend, because it felt important to tell his Uncle that. Necessary, for some reason.
âI know.â Uncle Nick replied gently. âBut letâs not worry about him right now, okay?â
âOkay.â
Then they were back in Steveâs woods, the ones that were sometimes unfriendly. In his backyard, and up to the door, and even from here Steve could hear his mother and father screaming at each other, in a tone that made his stomach curl.
âCome on kiddo. Time to face the music.â Uncle Nick told him, and Steve found he really didnât want to let go of his Uncleâs hand.
He did though.
He was a big boy, and well trained. He didnât flinch from his parents. Didnât disobey when his mother demanded he tell her exactly how he got to the fun place, with all the snow--and listened further still when she demanded Uncle Nick take it out of him.
Take what Steve didnât know--not until his Uncle lost the argument.
Reached into Steveâs chest and did something to him, something that killed that warm and fuzzy thing that had always lived inside Steve.
He cried harder than he ever had before that night. Cried and begged for Uncle Nick to put it back, that he was sorry and he wouldnât ever use it again if they just let him keep it.
(He promised, he promised, he promised-!)
Sank to his knees and told his parents that it hurt.
They didn't listen, and they didn't put it back.
His father told him to get up off the floor, and then pulled him up when Steve found he couldnât.
Hauled him to his room, even as his Uncle warned his mother that he couldnât get rid of it. That he could only suppress it, the same way she suppressed hers, but those words didnât really matter to Steve just then.
Not when he was hurting, and tired, and found himself wishing for his new friend.
(His mother told him heâd feel better in time.
Steve never did.)
xXx
The hole in Steveâs chest had never filled.
It kept him up at night. The yearning for something just out of reach, tormenting him with a feeling of being hollow.
He didnât know how his mother could stand it.
Steve stopped fussing about it though--or rather, he stopped the first time his father had slapped him over his complaining.
âEnough, Steven! Youâre perfectly fine. Now start acting like it, for fucks sake!â Heâd roared, and shocked as he was, Steve had still done what heâd been taught to do.
Toughed it out. Sucked it up. Got over it.
Dumped his entire life into basketball and swimming and other parent-approved activities, even if he felt empty.
He was eight, then ten, then fourteen and soon Steve wasnât healed, but he'd adjusted.Â
Got aloof to the pain as his popularity skyrocketed, and his parents left him on his own while they chased the almighty dollar.
(Secretly, Steve tried to fill the void in his heart with parties and people, alcohol and even the occasional drug, though most just left him feeling worse than before.
It was perhaps how he ended up acting as he did.
Turning from the sweet boy who was always helping others, to someone who was fast with their insults. Popularity was a sharks game, and though he refused to participate in the bullying his friends enjoyed, he made sure everyone knew who the biggest fish in the pond was.
Because the hole was always there, in the back of his mind. The thing inside him that was missing, that made him crave the snow, and the lights, and the boy with pointy ears.Â
He might be able to force himself to forget about all of that, if only the hole in his heart would allow him.)
xXx
Five days before his fifteenth birthday, some random guy showed up in Steveâs yard.
This wasnât unusual--Steve invited a lot of people over.
Tommy and Carol both had a standing invitation to use his pool and Steve often used it to curry favor with the upperclassmen--but even underwater, Steve didnât recognize the teenager leaning over to watch him swim.
Plus it was a little weird for someone to pop up on a Sunday.
Refusing to be intimidated, Steve surfaced right under the guy, head whipping up to make sure he splashed him in the face.
Laughed as the other guy sputtered.
âCan I help you man?â Steve drawled, hooking his arms on the lip of the pool.
âIâm looking for someone. Steve Harrington?â The guy told him, glaring as he wiped water off his face.
His hair just touched his shoulders, in that awkward stage of growing out that made him look like a pageboy.
Steve tucked that little observation away for later, in case he needed it.
âCongratulations, you found me.â He said, eyeing him over.
Black jeans with holes in the knees, wallet chain and a black shirt with a faded logo of some band Steve had never heard of proudly displayed. A checkered plaid shirt topped the whole outfit, with a red guitar pick dangling around his neck from a chain.
Like the guy thought he was some kind of rockstar, and not in bumfuck Indiana.
Steve raised an eyebrow.
âThough I think youâre in the wrong place. The audition for the new town jester is being held at the high school.â
He got a frown, like the guy knew he was being insulted but didnât quite want to believe it. âIâm not here for an audition.â
âYou sure? Cause youâre definitely dressed the part.â
âOkay, you are definitely not Steve.â He said, arms crossing his chest. He had a ring on each hand, catching the light as he clutched at his arms. âSteve wasnât this much of a dick.â
Which wasnât the first time Steve had been called out for his behavior--but it had never been by the people he was supposed to care about.
Those people, the people his parents liked?
They loved it.
âTimes change.â Steve told the stranger. Kept his tone light and playful, the way that always made girls giggle at him and guyâs listen.
Well the ones he wasnât making fun of, anyways.
âPeople do too.â
He rearranged himself, planting both palms flat against the concrete, bouncing once to build energy before rocketing out of the water.
Stood, and watched with interest as the new guyâs eyes raked over his naked torso, before his whole face flushed red.
How he looked away, like he suddenly couldnât bare to look at Steve.
âYou shouldn't have changed that much.â He muttered, but Steve already had his number.
"Why were you looking for me anyway?â Steve asked as he went and grabbed a towel. Wrapped it around his waist, but kept his upper body shirtless.
Idly scratched at his hip and watched as the guy acted like Steve had practically stripped naked in front of him.
Weirdly enjoyed the little spark it gave him, to watch this guy appear so affected by his bare chest.
Defensive, the stranger bit out; âWe were friends. I havenât seen him in a long time, I was just checking up on him.â
That made Steve pause.
Really look over the guy standing before him.
The fidgeting, the blushing, the way he avoided Steveâs gaze.
He opened his mouth, an odd urge to draw this out guiding him when the hole in his chest pulsed.
Like a convulsion, a miniature seizure that took Steve entirely by surprise.
It had been a long time since it had done that, long enough to throw Steve off his game.
Make him feel unsafe, unmoored.
Abandoned.
âYeah?â He wheezed, before covering himself and the flood of wrong/want/need with a harsh cough. âWell now I know youâre definitely barking up the wrong tree. Iâd never be friends with a fucking queer.â
At that, the guyâs mouth dropped open, head whipping around to stare at Steve in shock.
"Donât deny it, I can tell. Youâre practically drooling over there.â Steve smiled with all his teeth, even as he struggled to keep his breath even. âItâs disgusting.â
âYou know what, fuck you. I thought you were different and youâre not.â The stranger spat, with far more venom than Steve was prepared for. âYouâre the same as all the rest.â
He scoffed, before whirling on his heel, middle finger high in the air as he stormed off into the woods.
âHave fun with your sad, beige fucking life!â He yelled, voice a little choked up.
âI will!â Steve yelled back at him, oddly heated.
Rubbed his chest when he was gone, before sitting down to try and figure out what the hell just happened--and why the hell his chest hurt so much.
xXx
Steveâs life remained completely and painfully normal--until Nancy Wheeler.
Nancy and her smile, Nancy and her reminder of what it felt like to be loved.Â
She didnât fill the void inside him, but what she did came close.
Felt similar.
Steve found heâd do anything for her, looking at life once again through the lens he had back when he was seven.
It was great.
Better than great--it was the best heâd ever been.
Then Barb went missing.
Shit hit the fan so fast that in retrospect, Steve still doesnât understand it. There was Jonathan and his camera, with the background of his missing little brother. Tommy and his insults, grabbing Steve up by the collar. Nancy being weird, Nancy ducking him to hang out with the guy who took photographs of them having sex.
Steve's brain tracks it all in little snapshots. The way he realized that maybe Nancy was right--he was way more of an asshole than he thought. How he decided to clean the theater, and then apologize to Jonathan.
(Creepy shit or not, Jonathanâs brother was gone. Steve had never had a brother, but he understood how it felt when something important was taken from you.
How it made you act after.)
There was a shift inside him. Not coming from the void, but from how Steve dealt with it.
And then there was a fucking monster coming out of the ceiling.
This is how Steve learns the magic he once had wasnât special. That itâs not the only supernatural thing that exists in the world.
Only unlike the snow and gingerbread house and boy with pointed ears and an Uncle that looked a hell of a lot like Santa Clause, this version came with evil government laboratories, the Upside Down and his girlfriend holding a gun.
It was kind of a lot, really.
Particularly because his parents werenât home.
(They still came home of course, but it wasnât with the same frequency as it used to be.
The business trips went from once a month, to every other week, to long stretches of away periods. Long enough that Steve spoke to them over the phone more than he did in person, and knew more about business mergers than he ever cared too.
Also his fathers love life, courtesy of his drunk mother.)
Steve didnât exactly handle it well.
Doesnât think any of them handled it well, really, even if Nancy blamed him for trying to pretend he was okay. But right as their relationship blew up in Steveâs face, shit started happening again.
Flickering lights and freaky monsters. A group of kids Steve found himself in charge of, who were doing their level best to commit suicide.
(âWeâre helping El and Will, idiot!â Mike Wheeler protested in the back of Billy Hargroveâs Camaro when Steve brought up that this was not what being benched meant, and Steve let him have that one given the way the world was spinning.
God that asshole hit like a train.)
Another snapshot, full of fear and fury, and things were over once again.Â
Steve was telling Nancy it was okay. She could go with Jonathan, that he could tell it was what she wanted.
It hurt him to do it, but he wasnât going to be like his own parents.
Realized with a weird amount of clarity, that he wanted to be the very opposite of his parents.
Late in the night, feeling every ache and pain in his body but knowing everyone was safe, Steve finally started the long trek home.Â
He didnât have his car (he hoped that was still at the Byers place) and he didnât have his keys (no clue where those went but he was praying it wasnât in the freaky tunnels) and was well into the middle of his walk when his chest started acting weird. Really weird.Â
Steve ignored it.
He kept ignoring it, focused on getting back to his bed, and his bed alone.
(Maybe he had been thinking more than that. About how the last time he had truly been happy wasnât with Nancy, but with Eddie. That heâd give anything to go play in the gingerbread houses again.
Maybe he was even thinking of how warm his Uncle had been, the way he was so gentle when he held Steveâs hand.
How heâd argued against Steveâs parents, when no one else ever did.
It was probably just the head injury.)
Unfortunately--or fortunately, depending on who you asked later--the weird feeling didn't stop.
It grew and grew, until it felt like something was breaking out of him.
Like a cough youâd long suppressed that crawled forcefully up and out of your throat, it both hurt and felt amazing, a pang echoing out through his very core--
Then suddenly there was snow on the trees and Steve was stumbling into a teenager with fluffy hair.
âSorry.â He muttered, right before he went down on his knees.
âWhat the hell---â Fluffy haired guy said, spinning around and looking at Steve like he was a ghost. âOh shit, are you okay!?â
âIâm fine.â Steve lied, even as he gave in and laid down.
Man, this snow was nice.
Comfy and soft, and cold on his face.
There was a string of curses coming from above him, and Steve made the effort to twist his head so he could watch fluffy hair kneel frantically next to him.
â What happened!? How did you get here!?â
âSâlong story man.â Steve slurred, feeling bad and looking worse. His head fucking hurt.
âDonât suppose thereâs a guy named Eddie around? He has uh,â Steve fumbled, hands trying to point to his ears. âPointed. You know.â
He gestured to his own ear again.
(Figured he might as well ask, given all the snow.)
The Fluffy Hair pulled said hair back at that, revealing his very own pointy ear. âDude youâre in the North Pole, all us elves have pointy ears.â
The North Pole.
The words Steve had only ever dared to think, and never said out loud.
âCool.â He said instead, not really feeling like he was inside his own body.
âJust--stay there, okay? My name's Gareth Iâm gonna go get someone.â Gareth the elf (an elf, wasnât that a trip. Did that mean Eddie was also an elf?) said, hands hovering awkwardly in the air, before he darted off, out of Steveâs sight.
âCan you get Eddie?â The question came out in a whine, the hurt in Steveâs chest overtaken by the pain in his head.
He didnât get an answer.
Which was okay, he thought.
He didnât really need one.
He had the snow, and the woods that werenât straight out of a fucking nightmare, and, he could just sleep right hereâŚ
âSteve!â
He blinked, and found he must have passed out.
âThere you are. Stay with me.â A blurry face was saying. A couple more blinks brought it into focus, and Steve knew this person, even if he couldn't put a name to a face.
The hair was longer, and there were more rings on his fingers, ones Steve could both see and feel as a hand ran along the back of his head.
Worried doe eyes met Steve's own, and just through the curtain of curls, he caught the outline of a pointed ear.
âEd--ie?â He croaked, unsure.
âYeah Stevie, it's me. You're okay, we brought you back to my place. Gareth is getting help.â
He was trying to sound reassuring but he mostly just sounded worried.
Not that Steve cared, because he finally figured out why older Eddie was familiar.
âOh.â He managed, the words feeling like he had to push out. âIt was you. By the--pool.â
âWhat?â
It felt like eons ago. The weird guy, asking after him. Back when Steve had been doing anything he could to fill the void his magic had left behind, and turned into a raging shithead as a result.
âM sorry.â Steve slurred, voice cracking in its honesty. âI was--asshole. M'sorry.â
The look Eddie gave him was wild. Like he couldnât believe Steve was here, and definitely couldnât believe Steve was apologizing.
Which was fair. Until last year Steve wouldnât have ever apologized, to anyone, ever.Â
âYeah you were, but we can talk about it later. Right now I just need you to stay awake.â Eddie said instead. It was gentle, a lot more gentle than Steve felt he deserved.
It made him want to explain, more than anything, what had happened.
âI was tryin to fixâŚthe hole. Inside.â Steve needed Eddie to understand. Needed it more than breathing, just then.
âI know, big boy.â Eddie soothed, and his hands were back in Steveâs hair.
It felt nice.
âSânot an excuse, promise it's not. I was hurt--hurting, and--I was mean.â Steve continued. It was getting harder to think, the world swimming in and out of focus, but this was important.
Perhaps the most important thing heâd done in a long time, sans saving the kids from the demodogs.
âItâs okay, Stevie. I didnât get it back then but I understand better now andâŚâ
He might have said something more. Steve thinks he was, but then Eddie was shaking him harshly, and Steve realized he might have tried to pass back out.
âCome on Stevie, sweetheart, you canât sleep right now. You have to stay awake for me, okay? Steve?â
Steve tried to shake his head and hissed when he found out how much that hurt. Breathed in and out through the pain, before his brain connected back to what heâd been trying to say.
âNot jusâ to you.â He panted. âWasnât mean just to you.â
That was important too. That Eddie knew he hadn't been targeted. That Steve was a dick to pretty much anyone he came across.
âI know. I've uh, been watching you, from here."
âYeah?â
âWe have this giant globe. Like a crystal ball, but itâs set deep into the floor so you can only really see half of it. It can also connect to snow globes, and it can let you see places. Watch people.â
Eddieâs voice was soothing, the deep timber of it echoing through Steveâs chest. Belatedly he realized his head was in Eddieâs lap.
That felt nice too.
âI was real mad at you but the Bossman--uh, your Uncle, he kinda showed me you once or twice and then I started watching you myself. Sorry I know thatâs weird--â
âLeast you didnât take pictures.â Steve wheezed and then tried to grin because that was very much supposed to be a joke.
(He definitely had felt more put together when he dropped the kids off in Billy's Camaro--so what the hell was happening? Had the shock worn off? Adrenaline?
Fuck maybe he should have just driven Billyâs stupid car back to his house, instead of leaving it at Max's house.
Asshole deserved to not know where his car was anyway.)
Then suddenly there was a lot of noise and light and fuck did that all make his head hurt. Hands went all over him, people barking orders, and a girl Steve was pretty sure was his age was peering at him.
âSteve?â She asked, but it sounded distant. Echoey and unclear.
âI canât keep him awake!â
That from Eddie, who sounded much clearer, if not utterly panicked.Â
âItâs okay, Iâve got him.â The girl said, tight but professional in a way that typically belonged to someone used to medical emergencies. âYou can let him go now.â
âAre you kidding me, Buckley youâre an apprentice medmage-!â
Steve frowned at that, but found something was drifting over him. A weight, like an invisible blanket pressed down gently, and he had a second to recognize that this too, was some kind of magic before sleep tried to take him.
He fought it for a moment as a thought occurred.
One last thing he needed to say.
âYouâre still good. Eddie. Youâve always been--â
The magic took him away.
xXx
It smelled like cinnamon.
Cinnamon and sharp hints of peppermint, the kind that tickled at Steveâs nose as he slowly rose back into consciousness.
Steve winced as he sat up, head itching like ants were crawling all over it. Idly he tried to scratch at his forehead and found himself touching a thick bandage, at about the same time his body seemed to catch on that he was awake.
It reminded him that he had had a hell of a night in the form of an onslaught of aches and pains.
His fingers traced the edge of the bandage as he took in the cheerful red walls surrounding him. The room was the exact kind of kitschy his mom hated, little twirls of white here and there making the place look like the inside of a candy cane.
The center piece was the full size window, taller than Steve was and twice as wide. Fat, fluffy flakes of snow drifted lazily outside it, some sticking to the window panes as they floated on by.
It was a little like being knocked out and waking up in the Wonka factory, but given all the shit that he had been through the past twenty four hours, Steve didnât mind it.
Snow was infinitely preferable to the weird ash that came out of the Upside Down.
As if sensing he was awake, the door opposite the window swung open. A tray came through, positively stacked with a stupid amount of pancakes and oozing with maple syrup, the type Steve could smell.
âI,â Eddie announced, head just visible above the good, âhad a very embarrassing meltdown when they tried to take you away from me. So suck it up Harrington, because youâre stuck with me now.â
Steve stared at him, mildly concerned he was a hallucination.
âI brought you pancakes.â Eddie added, pausing as he approached the bed like he hadnât actually thought through to this point.
âI see that.â Steve said, just to fill the sudden, awkward silence. âThereâsâŚkinda a lot there, man.â
So much so it was threatening to escape the confines of the tray and drip down onto the carpet.
âYou play sports things donât you?â Eddie defended, making the executive decision to put the tray down on the bed. âKinda thought youâd need like, a lot, especially if you're healing."Â
Steve snorted, but didnât bother to hide the smile that crept onto his face.
Even if it hurt.
Dragged his gaze from the pile of pancakes now laid before him, to the man fidgeting awkwardly by his bedside.
Realized belatedly, that Eddie hadnât changed much.
Not since Steve had last seen him, though he never in his life would have thought one of Santaâs elves would wear so much black.
(Frankly Eddie looked just like every other teenage metalhead Steve had ever met, sans the pointed ears. One of which was now pierced and had little metal hoops threaded through it.)
Eddie realized Steve was looking, and bashfully twist a strand of his hair in front of his face.
It was cute.
It made him look cute.
âYou might as well sit and help me with this, itâs way too much.â Steve told him.
Which was the truth--Eddie had brought him a shit load of pancakes and Steve wasnât exactly sure he could chew all that well right now, considering his left cheek was so puffed out it felt like a chipmunks.
Didnât want to turn down a gift though--or rather, turn down a gift from Eddie.
Who he absolutely still needed to apologize properly too.
âI guess I should start off with a thank you.â Steve began, as Eddie dropped onto the bed. âI think you might have saved my life, though I swear I wasnât doing that bad off before I got here.â
âRobin said the shock wore off.â Eddie told him. He didnât wait for Steve to dig in, grabbing a pancake and rolling it up like a sausage before stabbing one end in syrup. âShe also said you had a hell of a concussion, two cracked ribs and a literal boatload of scratches,â
Which sounded about right, considering.
âStill though.â Steve frowned, looking at his hands. âI mostly just fought off Billy, the demodogs never got me.â
Something he was incredibly thankful for, given the sheer amount of teeth.
âI think youâre downplaying your injuries here, handsome, you gave Robin a hell of a fright. She cursed in four languages." Eddie talked fast, just like the little boy Steve remembered him as.
It made him grin.Â
âHandsome, huh?â Steve teased, and regretted it the second it slipped out of his mouth.
He hadnât meant to call attention to it. Not just yet anyway. Wanted to work his way up to his apology and then the things he had kind of realized on his walk home (and possibly before that, though he thinks he might haveâŚrepressed it.)
Given the way Eddie froze, Steve figures heâs got about two seconds to talk himself out of it, before Eddie rightfully shut him out.
âI like it. The nicknames.â He said, which is also not what he intended to come out of his mouth and God he was really blowing this, wasnât he?
âSteve,â Eddie started, sounding a little strangled and nope, no, he was going to fix this dammit!
âIâm sorry.â He said honestly. âI know I was an ass when you came to check up on me, and I know I said some terrible things to you. I regret it. I regret it a lot, and I shouldnât have treated you like that.â
âYou weren't wrong.â Eddie cut in, twirling a ring on his finger, eyes firmly on it. âI am gay. I am flamingly gay. And I understand if after today, you don't want me here.â
Which apparently answered the question about whether or not elves gave a shit about such things.
(Or maybe they did, and it was humans who cared, and Eddie was giving him an out for it.
Steve figured heâd ask later.
After he had finished groveling.)
âI want you here.â He said, as seriously as heâd ever said anything. âI think the real question is why you would want to help me?â
It was the one thing that didnât add up. Why Eddie had been so nice, when heâd shown up.
Sure it was one thing to be a good citizen or whatever, help out a guy who was passed out on the ground, but Eddie hadnât just gotten help.
Heâd stroked Steveâs hair. Heâd kept him awake.
Hell he called Steve sweetheart.
And now he was here again, right by Steve's bedside, checking up on him.
You didnât do that for the guy who was a downright douchebag too you, even if it had been a few years.
Eddie bit his lip, before he chanced a look back at Steve, up through his bangs. âBecause you said I was good Steve. You were the first person who ever said I was good.â
Quieter he added âAnd because we were friends once.â
âI'd like to still be friends.â
âEven if I'm gay?â
Steve took a deep breath, and let out a truth that heâd maybe been ignoring for almost as long as heâd tried to forget about the hole in his heart.
âCards on the table Eddie, Iâm not sure Iâm not gay Or whatever both is."Â
He'd heard the word once from Chrissy, but hadn't cared to remember it.
(Regretted that a little bit.)Â
He got a mighty frown in response.
âDonât do that. Donât--joke, like that.â
âItâs not a joke.â Steve said slowly, feeling the words as he spoke them. âI think this is part of the stuff I always just--ignored. Didnât want to deal with it, because my--â
Steve couldnât bring himself to say magic, and so, aborted the sentence entirely. âI couldnât deal. So everything connected to this place, to the rest of my family, to you, I just pushed aside. Pretended it didnât exist.â
Pretended that he was normal.
Just like his parents wanted.
Then heâd met Nancy.
Realized what he felt about her, heâd always felt about Eddie. That the way she looked at Jonathan wasnât the way she looked at him--and even then, in the love he had for her, Steve hadnât looked at her like that either.
Steve had been attracted to her for her yes--but initially, maybe, because sheâd looked a little like someone else.
Admitted to himself that he the reason he could clock Eddie so fast back when he was fourteen, wasn't because he was that good at reading people, but because he recognized what it looked like to get caught checking out a guy.
âBut I could never forget about you.â Steve added because well. âIâve never been able to forget about you.â
Heâd already said cards on the table, hadnât he?
Might as well reveal his whole hand.
âYou were the last thing I thought of, when I was trying to get home. I wasnât thinking about my house, or my parents. I was thinking about you. Iâve never been able to come back here, not after Uncle Nick,â He cut himself off again, frustrated that he couldnât just fucking it, but made himself take a breath.
Continue.
â--but I could, last night. I could get to you.â
Technically heâd gotten to Gareth, who Steve probably also owed a thank you too, but hey, beggars canât be choosers.
Gareth had found Eddie anyway, in the end.
âI absolutely get if you want nothing to do with that, considering I think Iâm just now accepting this about myself but. I wanted you to know. Youâre important to me, Eddie. You always have been.â
It was weird--Steve should have felt laid bare. Vulnerable now that heâd laid out all these things heâd suppressed, that he thought taken away alongside his magic.
Instead he felt lighter than air.
Like the weight had finally been lifted and he could breathe deep once again.
For a long moment no one said anything and Steve figured this was it, heâd gone too far, when Eddie darted in, pressing a quick kiss to Steveâs cheek.
He pulled away just as fast. Wide eyes searched Steveâs face, as though expecting Steve to change his mind.Â
If anything, it just solidified it.
Steve reached out slowly, gently grabbing on of Eddieâs hands. Brought it up to his mouth and kissed the back of it, while maintaining eye contact.
Enjoyed the way Eddieâs face went bright red.
âYouâre important to me too.â He managed, voice awed. âYouâve always been important to me. Stevie.â
Finally feeling like he knew where he belonged, Steve grinned back.Â
xXx
Bonus
âWhen I said let him sleep Munson, I didnât mean with you!â Someone screeched a few hours later, jolting Steve awake.
âHe was awake when I came in!â Eddie protested, shoving himself up onto his elbows when the women from yesterday--Robin, Steve thought her name was--stormed in. âWe fell asleep together after Robbie, I swear!â
âI donât believe you.â
âHi.â Steve said with a little wave, before the two of them could screech some more. âIâm Steve.â
âI know, Dingus.â Robin told him, eyes narrowed in fury. âYouâre a member of the Clause family, everyone knows who you are.â
âOh.â Steve said, though it felt less cool and more weird that someone had finally said it out loud.
That he, Steven Harrington, had an Uncle, and that Uncle was Santa Clause.
âDustin is gonna freak.â
âIâm sure Mega-Idiotson here hasnât told you, but Iâm the medmage that saw you last night. Or kinda--see Iâm an apprentice medmage, but my teacher was kinda out with the Boss seeing someone a town over and time was tight and we couldnât exactly wait--â
âBreath, Buckley. In,â Eddie teased, before demonstrating a deep breath on himself, hand sweeping into his chest before he loudly exhaled. âand out.â
âShut up, Eddie, Iâm working up to something here!â
âWhat is it?â Steve said, feeling like if he didnât interject Robin would take a while to get to the point.
âI might have accidentally undid whatever was on your magic?â Robin rushed out, so fast Steve nearly didnât catch it. âLike I can tell thatâs the Bossâs magic, and that he did--whatever that was, but I couldn't figure out how to heal you with it there and it was kinda already leaking out so I just--took it off?â
Steve gaped at her.
âYou fixed me?â He managed after a moment, hand darting out to squeeze at one of Eddieâs.
âUm. Yes?â Robin cautioned, like she wasnât exactly sure thatâs what she did.
âOh my god. Oh my god!â Steve laughed, then felt absolutely stupid for not checking in with himself.
Because Robin was right.
The hole was gone--and his magic was back.
How had he not noticed that his magic was back!?
âEddie, Eddie sheâs right--I have it back!â
He turned in bed, dropping Eddieâs hand so he could cup his face and kiss him instead.
âOkay, I donât need to see this--â Robin complained, but Steve didnât care.
Could only laugh delighted into Eddieâs mouth, before Eddie deepened the kiss.
(âGuys seriously I am still right here! Canât you at least wait until Iâm gone!?â
âNo. Now get out Robin, youâre ruining my moment!â
âItâs okay, Eds. Iâll give you as many moments as you want.â
âEw, ew, ew-!â )
Hi I hope you're doing well! Anyways, how do you think the four boys (Dwayne, David, Marko, Paul) would react if we just ran away, like went to our friends house and refused to come back to the cave? Also what punishments do they give, like after we ran away and in general? Also sorry if my grammer is bad English isn't my first language, anyways have a good day/night!
Running away
Platonic Yandere lost boys x reader
Notes- Hey Iâm doing great thanks! Your English is very good- I couldnât tell you werenât a native speaker :)
Warnings- Choking, Yandere behaviour, Confinement, Psychological abuse, Dehumanisation
Part 2
⢠I think itâs safe to say all four of your fathers would be absolutely LIVID if you ran away.
⢠They genuinely donât understand why you would even think to do something so senseless. After all, it was them who saved you from your biological family when you first moved to Santa Carla.
⢠Not only that, but you had also stolen Dwayneâs bike (his being the obvious choice, as you spent the most time on it).
⢠They discovered your absence a few hours after you had snuck out, but couldnât go after you due to the burning rays of the July sun.
⢠Meanwhile, you had found yourself at Bethanyâs house. She knew enough about your parents to gladly let you stay as long as you need, despite your warnings about how dangerous they are.
⢠Coming back to the boys, I think their individual reactions would vary. Dwayne would be more worried than pissed off. The thought of his baby girl being out there alone without their protection fills him with this hopeless dread. Heâs not even mad about the bike because heâs so scared that youâve crashed somewhere and are lying under a mangled pile of metal, injured and alone.
⢠Marko is also terrified for you. As Iâve said before, heâs in denial about you growing up, so he wonât even entertain the idea that you might be able to look after yourself. Heâs not used to being afraid. Out of everyone in the pack itâs generally agreed that Marko is the most sadistic and violent when it comes to preying on humans. He thrives off of scaring people (you included) so the fact that you are scaring him makes him angry.
⢠He finds himself pacing the cave, eyes shining a brilliant yellow and fangs on display as he pictures the moment they find you. David eventually has to tell him to knock it off or heâll tire himself out before nightfall.
⢠Speaking of David, I think that out of everyone heâd be the least panicky. Thatâs not to say he isnât worried about you, but he understands you better than the others do. He knows that it takes careful planning to pull off a stunt like this, and you arenât stupid enough to get yourself caught up in anything too dangerous.
⢠This stems from the fact that Davidâs obsession with you doesnât come from a deep rooted paternal desire like it does for the others. Sure, he loves you as his daughter and feels a strong sense of pride that they were the ones to mould you into who you are today, but itâs more complicated than that.
⢠The more you grow, the more he sees himself and the others within you, but beneath all that is someone else. A small fragment of a broken child waiting to spiral into something else. Thatâs what intrigues him. That hidden part of you locked behind years of painful love and comforting abuse.
⢠Paulâs reaction is a lot simpler than Davidâs. He feels guilty that their previous argument with you has led to you doing something so drastic. Itâs not that he doesnât trust you, he just doesnât trust all the creepy men around that could hurt you.
⢠I donât think heâd be on the verge of a complete meltdown like Dwayne and Marko, but heâd definitely be on edge, with a million different scenarios playing out through his head.
⢠Once the sun is finally down, it wouldnât take them long to find you. You werenât stupid enough to leave Dwayneâs bike right outside Bethanyâs house, but it was still close enough for your fathers to track you down with relative ease.
⢠The only problem they faced was actually getting to you. Vampires have to be invited inside, and there was no way Bethanyâs mother was going to let in a group of leather clad punks demanding to see their fifteen year old daughter.
⢠So naturally, they went to Max and begged asked him to politely introduce himself as your uncle and bring you home.
⢠Of course, with his charming nature Max had no problem getting invited into Bethanyâs home.
⢠In all fairness, he didnât lie. Sure, he had left out the part where Marko choked you until you were on the verge of passing out, but nothing he did say was untrue. It was more just a careful avoidance of certain details.
⢠You knew you were in deep shit when you came downstairs for dinner and saw your uncle sat at the table with a plate of lasagne of his own.
⢠It was an awkward dinner, well for you at least. Bethâs mum seemed pretty into Max, and he clearly loved the attention.
⢠Once the meal was over, Max announced that he would be taking you home, his tone stern- a subtle warning for you not to argue.
⢠So you didnât argue. At least, not until you were out of Bethanyâs house.
⢠As soon as her door clicked shut you bolted.
⢠It was a stupid idea really. Maxâs car was parked right outside the driveway, so even if you did manage to get away from him, heâd easily be able to chase you down in the vehicle.
⢠It wasnât Max who caught you though. In fact, he made little effort to chase you as you ran.
⢠That didnât strike you as odd until the street you were sprinting down was suddenly lit by a harsh white light.
⢠For a moment you thought it was a car speeding towards you, but as your eyes adjusted it became clear that there were three beams of light, not two.
⢠Your fathers had been waiting round the corner for you and Max.
⢠You, being a stubborn teenager, didnât stop running. You ignored the aggressive revving of their engines and legged it down the road.
⢠The gleaming headlights honed in on you, allowing no darkness to conceal your desperate escape.
⢠Their bikes almost seemed to leap forwards after you, as if they were an extension of your fathers, feeding from their obsessions.
⢠It only took a matter of seconds for them to catch up to you, even after you veered from the road and tried to make a break for the forest at the end of the street.
⢠They had you surrounded in an instant. David in front, Marko to your right and Dwayne and Paul sharing a bike to your left.
⢠Perhaps you would have found the sight amusing if it wasnât for that look in their eyes.
⢠This must have been what it felt like to be a deer. Trapped under the gazes of four hungry wolves, with your only advantage being your primal fear of being dragged back to the cave- something that you knew would be your inevitable fate.
⢠Despite the futility of the situation, you still tried to break past them, spinning on your heel and dashing to the gap between Marko and Davidâs bikes.
⢠For a fleeting second you truly believed you had succeeded in getting past them, but then a hand snared in the neck of your top and yanked you back.
⢠The force of it pulled you to the ground, where you lay momentarily stunned, choking for air.
⢠David was quick the dismount his bike, crouching over where you lay on the sidewalk.
⢠There was nothing you could do except stare up at him, dazed as he pulled you to your feet and forced you onto the back of his bike.
⢠They didnât speak to you on the ride back, only stopping once to pick up Dwayneâs discarded bike (after youâd been forced to hand over the keys).
⢠The only conversation was between Marko and Paul, who seemed almost giddy to return to the cave. You expected that from Marko, always the sadist, but Paul? That stung a little. You supposed he was just feeding off of his mateâs energy.
⢠David was clearly pissed off. You were surprised he hadnât berated you yet, but it seemed as though he was waiting to get home for your punishment.
⢠As for Dwayne, you could tell he was deeply disappointed that you had even wanted to leave them, let alone actually do it.
⢠When it comes to punishments, David is usually in charge. Heâs the leader of the pack and therefore creates the rules and enforces them the most out of everyone.
⢠The only exception being when Marko occasionally decides to make a new rule without telling any of the others so when you inevitably break it, he punishes you.
⢠There was a lot of debate between them about what the punishment for running away should be.
⢠Dwayne was more inclined to taking away certain privileges. No trips to the boardwalk, no choice in what you get to eat, no visiting Uncle Max and Thorn, etc.
⢠Marko would rather just break your legs. It solves the issue of you running away in the future and makes you completely dependent on them, solidifying how much you need your fathers to help you.
⢠In the end though, David gets the final call. He decided that if you donât want to be around them then fine, but it wonât be in your terms.
⢠They left you chained up like a dog in a secluded part of the cave- far from where your fathers would be spending much of their time.
⢠You were left there for two months, only seeing David once a day when he brought you a bottle of water and a ham sandwich.
⢠Being treated like an animal slowly chips away at your sanity. Davidâs silent glare and the bland flavours of your basic meal are the only markers of the time spend in the darkness.
⢠The chain around your ankle feels heavier the longer youâre there. Your weight loss making you weaker by the day as you almost forget that Dwayne, Marko and Paul must be somewhere in the cave as well.
⢠You wondered if they thought about you as little as you thought about them.
⢠It felt like years before David finally brought a key along with your meagre meal.
⢠He watched silently as you ate your sandwich. You kept your gaze averted, staring at those cold leather boots as you chewed your way through the stale bread.
⢠âNot in the mood for talkinâ huh?â
⢠David twisted the keys around between his fingers. Your silence wasnât much of a surprise to him, after all it had been a whole two months since you had spoken to him or your other fathers. He briefly wondered if youâd been talking to yourself to cope with the loneliness.
⢠How much damage could enough isolation do to a person?
⢠The chain unlocked with a small click, but you still made no effort to move.
⢠David sighed and cupped your cheek, guiding you to look at him. âYouâre free now, punishmentâs over. Cmon, the others have missed you.â
⢠You let him help you stand up- something you hadnât done it a long time.
⢠David guided you back to the main area where Dwayne, Marko and Paul waited restlessly to see you again.
⢠Dwayne was the first to rush over to you, enveloping you in a big hug. You didnât return it. It was hard to feel anything but the cold chill that still remained after those two long months.
⢠Your fathers were quick to wrap you in a thick blanket and curl up on the couch. Marko was practically spoon feeding you the bolognaise they had prepared earlier that day, but you hardly noticed.
⢠No one admitted it out loud, but it was clear that your isolation had scarred you a lot worse than a pair of broken legs from Marko wouldâve.
⢠They were going to need to put in a lot of work to get you back.
Boone is a man searching for sense in the nonsensical. Heâs turned his life into a stage play, and reduced everyone in it to a role.
For every major moment in his life, he remembers himself as a passive observer.
The NCR chose him for First Recon, and he accepted for the pay. He describes his training as being broken down until following orders was automatic.
At Bitter Springs, he did what he was told, even knowing command didnât understand the situation. He believes the only alternative would have been to kill himself.
He met Carla because he was standing around looking lost and she approached him. They moved to Novac because Manny brought them there.
And he describes Cottonwood Cove as âbeing forced to watch something you canât stop.â His entire marriage was just a cruel plot twist, with himself and Carla as props rather than characters.
When he joins the Courier, he does it because he thinks the curtains are opening on the final act. The playwright (which he only describes as âsomething watchingâ) has drawn it out long enough and is finally going to end it. By all accounts, heâs looking forward to it â at least for the wait to be over.
But then he survives his quest, and heâs almost devastated. The worldâs gone off-script. He doesnât know his lines anymore. When he turns to the Courier, the person he took to be his harbinger of fate, itâs a desperate bid to make it make sense.
But the Courier was never an omen. Theyâre a maker of fate. On their advice, he becomes more proactive in his own life (for better or worse). Unfortunately, he can only be convinced the universe isnât out to get him by sacrificing his conscience, and it doesnât really bring him any relief to do so. So the best ending for Boone is to accept the framework heâs created for himself, but defy the stars and just keep going despite it all.
And, you know. One of these days he has to figure out the cosmos arenât plotting his demise. Right?
The Change: Beau
Summary: Beau's having a normal Saturday night when he catches a strange scent in the wind...
The Change
Pairing: Alpha!Beau Arlen x omega!reader
Word Count: 8,000ish
Warnings: language, angst, minor violence/injuries, fluff, implied smut
A/N: Y'all wanted more of The Change and I thought what better way to fill in some of the gaps than by taking a peak through Beau's perspective! While not 100% necessary to read The Change to understand this story, it's highly recommended!
_________
Saturday Night
âDad, are you okay?â I turned my head towards Em, forcing a smile. She raised an eyebrow from her chair nearby the fire pit, a blanket over her lap. âYou look worried.â
âItâs fine.â Shit. I bit my tongue but she was giving me that look again. That âwe need to communicate openly, remember what the counselor said, dad?â look. I slumped down in my chair, trying to ignore the strong whiff of omega floating through the breeze.Â
I could smell Em by my side. All sugar cookies, lavender, fresh linen, with that oh so subtle hint of fresh rain that was baked into the Arlen pack. Scenting had itâs limits though. It only worked maybe twenty feet or so away.Â
So why the hell did I smell an Omega with rain in her scent but nothing else? We had some land to ourselves, a good ten acres, on the edge of the neighborhood. There was no feasible way I could be smelling an omega all the way up here.
âDad!â Emily barked. I shot upright, looking around for any sign of danger. âWhatâs wrong with you? You smellâŚweird.â
âWeird?â I lifted my jacket collar and sniffed, something certainly off about it. She shrugged.
âYou smell, like you did when you found me at the mine,â she said quietly. âYou know, way on red alert. Whatâs wrong?â
âIâm not sureâŚâ I said, standing slowly. I was prepared to make up an excuse but Emily was watching with those big doe brown eyes and it made my heart clench. Communication. Right. âI uh, smell an omega which is weird when itâs only the two of us out here.â
Em smirked, a frown crawling onto my face. âWell there is one reason Alphas can smell an omega thatâs far away when they arenât in the pack. You knowâŚsoulmates.â
I blinked at her, cocking my head. âThatâs notâŚyour mom was-â
âDaddy.â I froze still, eyes locked on hers. âI mean this in the nicest way but you and mom are not soulmates. Your bond broke way before you got divorced and soulmates never get divorced. You care about each other but itâs not that soulmate love.â
âI thought you wanted me and your mother back together for the longest time,â I said quietly, slowly sitting. Emily slumped down, fisting her blanket.Â
âMe too. But youâre happier here than I think I ever saw you with mom. Whatâd you tell me? Donât settle for convenient and easy?â I smiled, reaching over to mess up her hair, earning a groan that made my heart happy.Â
âSometimes I forget my sassy child is full of wisdom,â I said.
âGoing to traumatic murder camp and getting kidnapped will do that to you,â she said with a cheeky grin. I rolled my eyes, chuckling as I ruffled it one more time. Sheâd been pretty shook up after everything last year and Carla didnât love Emâs dark humor but the counselor said it was a healthy way for her to cope and shit, I wasnât about to stop her.
These days, it was hard to tell anything even happened to her besides the occasional nightmare.
âIâm going to run out real quick and pick up some ice cream. Flavors?â I asked. She rolled her eyes. âWhat?â
âGo find this little omega of yours. I can handle being alone,â she said. I stared at her, Em rolling her eyes. âFine. You can have a sheriff come over.â
âThank you,â I said, kissing her temple. âPut the fire out for me please when youâre done. Iâll be back soon.â
âHave fun finding your soulmate!â she teased, not noticing the way my heart jumped up to my throat at her words.
Twenty minutes later I was walking around town, following the growing scent of rain when something else mixed in. Something sharp, painful.
Danger. Omega in danger. Your Omega is in danger.
I took off in a sprint down the sidewalk, following the scent and turning the corner to a dark parking lot next to a pharmacy.
âGet off!â someone muffled a shout under a large hand, that someone being my goddamn omega, my soulmate, my everything.Â
I drew my weapon and fired a shot in the air without thinking, nearly pulling the trigger on the two scumbags pinning her down.
Calm down. She needs you more than you want to hurt them.Â
I reluctantly took a breath, listening to the inner voice in my head. âOn your bellies. Hands on your head or the next one goes through your spine.â
The two assholes rolled off of her and I quickly glanced at the omega. Her cheek was scuffed up and she looked sacred but damn, she knocked the breath out of me.
Hairs prickled the back of my neck as I inhaled her scent.Â
Fuuuuuuck. She smelled like fresh rain, she had that Arlen pack scent. My vision swam for the briefest of moments as my heart thudded happily at finding itâs soulmate. Alright, I could be a pile of mush later. I needed backup and these guys restrained before I not so accidentally started shooting off pieces for touching her.
âMamâ, are you alright?â I asked. She nodded quickly and thankfully it looked like they hadnât done more than knock her to the ground before I was able to step in. I pulled out my phone, shoving it between my shoulder and ear. âDispatch, this is Arlen. I need two squad cars at the Rite-Aid pharmacy off of Main. Two suspects in custody. Attempted assault. Vic appears okay besides some minor injuries.â
âWeâll have two cars over in under two, Sheriff.â
âThanks, Abby,â I said, staying on the line but shoving the phone in my pocket just in case. I secured one man with my cuffs but I needed something else unless I wanted to sit on top of this guy. Meanwhile, the omega was scrambling across the pavement, trying to pick up the items sheâd bought into the plastic bag in her hand. She reached for a small pack of zip ties, slightly odd to pick up in the middle of the night but Iâd hold off on my judgment.
âMind if I borrow that?â She let me take the package and remove a tie, securing the second man, albeit he could get out if he really tried. âThank you mam.â
She was clearly petrified and putting on a brave face. She shoved a bottle of pills in her bag as I asked her once again if she was alright.
âNever better!â She said in an abnormally high pitched voice. She popped to her feet before I could help her up, a slow sigh escaping me. âUh, thanks.â
Be a calming presence for her.
But then she was trying to leave down the dark parking lot again and I grabbed her arm on instinct. Didnât she realize the safest place for her was by my side? âWhoa, whoa. These guys canât do anything to you. Backup will be here in two minutes tops. I know you want to get home but we need a statement and you should get that scuff cleaned up by a paramedic. Hell, I can do it for you back at the station.â
She just kept staring at me and alarm bells were going off in my head. Did she have a concussion? Did she hit the back of her head? Okay, she needed to be seen by a doctor right now. âAlright. I think you hit your head a little harder than we both realized when they knocked you down. Why donât you take a seat-â
I was not expecting my dream girl to proceed to knee me in the dick so hard my life flashed before my eyes. I heard a sorry squeak out as she took off and I lay on the ground, trying to get my bearings.
âNice one, sheriff,â snided one of the men in custody. I grunted, kicking him in shoulder as I sat up. âFucker, you canât do that!â
âIf it were up to me, Iâd beat the shit out of you, drop you off a cliff and let the animals eat you alive.â I rolled to my knees and got up as a squad car showed up, an officer running out.
âYou alright, boss?â I waved him off.Â
âRead these two their rights. Iâm going after the victim,â I said, jogging past him and down the street, catching tail lights in the distance. I made it to my truck and was on the road just as she turned left about a mile away. I cursed as I lost sight but then I rolled down my window, taking a deep breath.
Her scent was subtle but I followed it down a dirt road and up a barely there path through the trees to a rundown looking cabin. There was a light on inside and I jogged up to the door when her scent was stronger. âMiss? Itâs Sheriff Beau Arlen. We met just a short time ago. Iâm doing a wellness check. Please answer the door.â
The omega ripped open the door, the fear from before replaced with etches of worry.Â
âHi. My dad fell earlier today. I think he broke his leg. Heâs in the bathroom.â Oh, this poor thing. I nodded, giving her a smile.Â
âOkay. We can call an ambulance and-â
âHeâs terrified of public places. Of catching theâŚsickness.â Sickness? What the hell was she talking about? âI know he needs a hospital but is there any way we can limit the number of people heâs around? Like a doctors office or something?â
I breathed deeply, picking up on her fatherâs bland scent indicating he was Beta. But in her own home this Omega should have smelled like something more than fresh rain. Anything at all.Â
Shit, she smelled like Emily had before she fully presented. Like a blank canvas. But how the hell had this woman in her early thirties that was presented as omega not smell like one?
âHow the hellâŚâ I shook my head. She simply hadnât had a proper heat before which in theory was possible if she hadnât been around an Alpha during her cycle before. Strange but not completely unheard of. A groan in the background had me straightening myself. âAlright. Iâll see what I can do to accommodate hisâŚneeds.â
She thanked me and attempted to have me leave but I was already texting dispatch, telling them I was about to have a first time adult heat. God, I remember when Carla had hers. She was bent over in pain one second yelling at me for existing and trying to jump my bones the next telling me how much she needed me. Even though I was struggling through a damn rut in exhaustive pain.
That should have been my first clue that her needs would always outweigh mine.
I sighed when our argument turned heated, the poor little omega in front of me overwhelmed with fear and hormones and likely a good dose of paranoia. She collapsed as I caught her in my arms, gently laying her down to the ground.
âWhat the hell did you do to my daughter!â shouted her father from a room off to the side. âYou infected her you-â
âHey!â I barked, placing a pillow under her head and brushing the hair from her face. I stood and stormed over to him, wincing at the nasty piece of meat that was his leg. âYou are going to tell me exactly what has been going on around here with her, with you, all of it.â
âYou got her sick!â I squatted down, narrowing my eyes. He returned it, breathing hard. âYou nasty smelling mutt. You bite her and Iâll kill you.â
âSo you do know a thing or two about this situation,â I said with a smile. âNow. Tell me everything or this nasty mutt with a gun and a badge will start thinking youâre keeping your daughter locked away and doing some very nasty things.â
âI would never, you perverted-â I snarled, the Beta biting his tongue.
âDo not disrespect me. I am here to help her and her alone. Now sheâs going into heat, uneducated and scared. Her body is going to be in pain and she doesnât understand why all because you have lied to her for a decade. I would never be so cruel to my daughter.â He swallowed, his gaze going to behind me where she lay on the floor. âShe will be fine but you need to tell me everything. Now.â
Five Hours Later
âGood evening, Dr. Y/L/N. This is sheriff Beau Arlen of the Helena police department. I apologize for the late call but we have a situation here with your father and sister,â I said from the corner of the hospital room where Y/N laid fast asleep. Sheâd awoken confused and more than a littleâŚprimal a few hours ago. I could only imagine what it felt like to go through your first heat with your soulmate sitting eight feet away.Â
She smelled delectable, enough so I had to ask for some scent blockers for myself so Iâd stop getting so damn horny around her.Â
âPlease call me Emmet. Are they okay? I havenât heard from my sister in a decade so any news-â
âSheâs alright Emmet. Sheâs currently at our local hospital being treated for her first heat. Your father broke his leg badly a few days ago and is in the ICU recovering from surgery.â Emmet swore on other line and breathed deeply.
âMy father is paranoid, Sheriff. I called him on the night of the Change years ago and told him to take my kid sister out of the city for a few days until we knew what was going on. I called him five days after and told him it was okay to go back but they never did. Iâve explained to him over and over again that she is perfectly safe. I could never track him down.â
âThey appear to be staying at an old cabin on the edge of town here,â I said, Emmet groaning.
âThey went to grandpaâs hunting cabin? Jesus christ. I forgot that place existed. Is Y/N alright?âÂ
âSheâs fine, Emmet. Sheâs a strong woman, her body just needs to catch up a little is all.â Emmet huffed.
âShe was supposed to work at a big accounting firm. She got a really good job out of college and then she disappeared with him. The paranoid fuckerâs probably kept her locked up there for years.â My heart skipped a beat. âSorry. He wouldnât hurt her. Dadâs justâŚalways been overprotective of her. Always. Something happened when she was young andâŚyeah, heâs always been afraid of her getting hurt again.â
âEmmet, any information you can relay to me might help me understand your father better. I need to know if your sister has been at that cabin all these years of her own free will or not.âÂ
Emmet was quiet for a beat, a chair creaking as if he were sitting down in the background. âOur father was a lawyer. A prosecutor. He put away a killerâŚfor a very dangerous and powerful family. I was in college at the time. They broke in one night and killed our mother and kidnapped Y/N. She was maybe four? I donât think she even remembers. It took a few days to get her back and that was only because she bit one of them and ran away and out a window.â I smirked, closing my eyes.
âAlways been tough as nails even when sheâs afraid, huh.âÂ
âYeah. Dad was different with her after that. Always blamed himself. Way too protective. She tried to appease him but she always wanted to live her own life too. The idea of her being claimed by someone-â
âHe literally canât handle it,â I finished. Emmet hummed. âThank you for the information Emmet. Iâll speak with your sister more but I doubt weâll press charges.â
âMr. Arlen, Iâll be down in a few days. I need to speak to my sister, and father. Iâm in Seattle these days and I think itâs best if she stays with me for the time being.â I cleared my throat, walking out of the room and to the hallway. âMy father will need intensive rehab if itâs as bad as you say and then in-home care, both of which will be much easier to provide if Iâm there-â
âEmmet, thereâs not an easy way to say this so Iâll just spit it out. I got involved tonight because I was able to scent your sister from my backyard over eight miles away from where we met. Now, youâre a doctor. You tell me the only scenario in which that is possible.â Emmet was quiet, my heart hammering. âDr. Y/L/N-â
âAre you a good man?â he asked. I sat down on a hall bench, glancing down.
âIâm divorced, I got ten years on her and a teenage daughter. I am by no means perfect. If she wants to go to Seattle, I will not stop her.â I crossed my arms, leaning back against the wall. âBut I can promise you, she will be safe with me and free to live her life. I do not intend to hold her back.â
âI seriously doubt my sisterâs going to want to leave your side once her heat calms down and she realizes who you are to her,â he said with a hum. âSheriff.â
âYes?â
âIâll take my dad off your hands once heâs ready for in-home care. Let Y/N live in a town without him for a while.âÂ
âWhatâs she like?â I asked, screwing professionalism for the moment. âYou said she wanted to be an accountant?â
âPft, god no. She would have worked at a bakery if she had her choice but you know how parents can be,â said Emmet. âYou said your name was Beau, right?â
âYes, I did.â
âWell Beau, considering this is likely the first of many conversations weâll have throughout our lives, a word of advice. If she wants to work at a goddamn bakery, let her. If you guys ever need help, just tell me. I got more than enough. I just want my baby sister to be alright.â I smiled, relaxing my shoulders.
âI appreciate it Emmet but I do alright on my own. Like I said, I will not be the one holding her back from whatever it is she wants to do.â I could feel her scent pick up, twitchy, wanting me nearby. âI got to run but I appreciate the talk and Iâm looking forward to meeting you. Iâll make sure she gets a chance to talk to you tomorrow.â
I hung up and slipped back in the room, pulling my chair closer, her scent calming. My phone dinged and I frowned. What the hell was Emily doing up at 2 in the morning?
Howâs the soulmate search going? Pop says hi by the way. We ordered pizza. Thereâs leftovers in the fridge if you ever come home tonight. Please tell me youâre not stalking some woman in the middle of the night.Â
âThis child,â I grumbled, typing a long message before my phone pinged again, eyebrows raised.
I can talk to her. I know more about being an Omega than you do to be fair. Sheâs probably scared. I can dig up those Change puberty books from the basement.
Thank you, Em. Weâll talk in the morning. Now get some sleep..
I frowned, shooting off another text.
Tell Pop if he eats all my mint fudge ice cream again Iâm firing him.Â
Too late. Night dad!
I sighed, resting my phone on my chest and sliding down in the chair. I kicked off my boots and propped my feet up at the end of Y/Nâs bed.Â
âSo. Not how I imagined my first night with my soulmate,â I said quietly. âHow about you, darlinâ? Everything you dreamed of?â
She snored lightly in bed, rolling over on her side and staying in a deep slumber.Â
âWell donât chat my ear off, Iâm trying to sleep,â I chuckled. She scratched her belly absently, breathing deeply. âGoodnight, omega.â
The Next Day
Despite an albeit awkward start to the day, the smile on Y/Nâs face as she and Emily shared the far side of the booth and devoured a brownie sundae was putting a big on on mine. Y/N hadnât had much of anything besides basic foods for ten years and she was ordering every greasy, fatty, sugary thing on the menu.Â
It was kind of adorable the way she guzzled down a pile of poutine on her own and then asked for seconds.
âIs Y/N coming home with us?â asked Emily a little eagerly. I lightly kicked her shin under the table, Em pouting. âThatâs child abuse.â
âChild abuse is you hitting me in the nuts with a baseball bat when you were four. Pretty sure you were trying to make sure you were an only child from the start.â
âI wouldnât mind a sibling-â I kicked her again, Emily glaring back. Y/N looked between us with a goofy smirk, gravy at the corner of her mouth.
âYou guys are really cute. I wish Iâd had that with my dad,â she said, her face falling momentarily. She cleared her throat though and wiped off her lips, glancing at me. âYour dad and I have to talk about a lot of things but in the meantime he said he had an idea about where I could stay. You guys have a trailer on your property?â
âDad used to live in an air streamer when he moved here,â said Emily, smirking at me. âIf you need a love nest-â
âDo not tell her about nesting,â I growled, Emily grinning like a Cheshire cat. Y/N blinked at both of us, her head tilting. I cleared my throat when I sensed herâŚfuck, she was horny as fuck.
Cool it with the Alpha voice bucko.
âNesting is um, wellâŚâ I trailed off, Emily pipping right in.
âItâs when the Alpha goes all crazy and makes you a comfy bed with pillows and blankets and stuff so you can pass a heat surrounded by their scent. And to fuck in a lot but the scent stuff too.â I dropped my head to the table, a low whine escaping. âThey teach us in health class.â
âIn my health class all they did was show us pictures of STIâs,â said Y/N, her fingers grazing my scalp. I raised my head, heart skipping at the feel of her touch in my hair. Her face was so soft, so unlike the fearful one of last night. âRelax. Iâm not going anywhere and Emilyâs bluntness is appreciated.â
Emily glanced at Y/N and then myself, making an excuse to use the restroom. Y/Nâs hand dropped to the table, a pout forming on my face. She giggled though, the sound calming me. âCan youâŚsmell me, Y/N?â
âSure,â she said coyly, laughing when I rolled my eyes. âI think so. I donât quite understand it but I know youâre nervous. You like when Emily teases you but thereâs something a little on edge with you. Iâm still trying to figure all this out to be honest.â
âItâs okay,â I said, reaching a hand up and gently taking hers in mine. My thumb stroked over the back of her skin and I held it up, closer to her. âYou wonât be able to do that with most people. Only your mate can you tell certain things. We donât exactly understand that part of it yet.â
âI imagine it gets a bit complicated when you mix advanced evolution with metaphysical souls,â she said, tilting her head, turning my hand over and stroking my palm. Her big eyes stared at my skin, nose twitching when she inhaled. âEverything in my head says Iâm a moron for trusting a strange man, that you could hurt me or worse. But then I do thisâŚâ
She tugged me closer, pulling my hand to her warm cheek, her skin velvety soft. Her bond pulsed hard under the skin of her neck, so subtle no one would notice but I could see it thumping away like it had itâs own heartbeat. Y/Nâs eyes searched my face, looking for an answer to a question she didnât know how to ask.
âThere are some people that donât believe in true mates. They think itâs just hopeless romantics making shit up,â I said, pulling my hand down, grazing her bond with my fingertips. Soft lips parted, Y/Nâs eyes dewy at the touch. âTouch my neck.â
She tentatively reached across the table, letting me guide her hand to the left side. âMy gland is much smaller but itâs there. Now push down on it.â
Y/N didnât look convinced but gently nudged two fingers against the skin. I jerked back just as she did, a bolt of peacefulness shooting through my body. She rubbed her own gland, breathing hard. âWhat the fuck was that?â
âThink of it like thereâs a rope connecting our souls. We just tugged on it,â I grinned, rubbing my chest. âSo we canât get lost from each other ever again. True mates form that bond even without the physical connection being met yet which is why you could tell I was nervous.â
Y/N smiled, placing a hand over her bond. âSo thatâs why you donât feel so strange. Huh.â
âWe can take this as slow as we want to,â I said, taking out my phone, checking the time. Y/N shoveled one last scoop of ice cream in her mouth before sliding out of the booth. âWhere-â
âEmily has school in the morning. We should head out,â she said, catching Emily returning from the bathrooms. âWeâll meet you out front?â
âY/N.â I hopped up quickly. Shit, was I making her nervous? I opened my mouth to speak but she was right there, placing a finger to my lips.
âItâs okay, sheriff,â she murmured, grazing her knuckles over my beard. âJust need a little girl talk.â
âAbout what?â I asked quietly.
âAboutâŚjust trust me?â I held up my hands, Y/N backing away before popping outside with Em.Â
âSheriff,â said a deep, monotone voice. I spun around, Donno standing there with a styrofoam box. âRhubarb pie.â
âI didnât order-â Donno shoved it forward, my hands barely catching it.Â
âShe wants it.â I raised my eyebrow, glancing outside to where Y/N and Emily were leaning against the truck. âShe wanted pie and this is all we have.â
âUh, thanks Donno,â I said. He half growled and I handed him my credit card. He grumpily took it behind the counter, handing it back with a grimace. âHowâs things with Tonya?âÂ
He grunted and I chuckled.Â
âLater, Donno. You and your girl stay out of trouble.â I ducked outside with the pie, the girls giving me a smile. âEverything all set?â
âNever better.â
âHey, Em?â I asked after showing Y/N the airstreamer when we got home. She was downstairs talking to her brother, all sorts of giddy scents coming off her. âGot a sec?â
She put her phone down, frowning when I pushed it away and set it on the charger. âFirst off, itâs bedtime. Second, is everything okay with you and Y/N? I know everythingâs been moving fast and if you want to talk about anything, Iâm here.â
âWeâre fine,â she said softly, giving me that look Iâd seen in therapy too many times. I pouted, Em sighing. âShe wasâŚher body did something at the diner. She said you guys touched bonds which made herâŚyou knowâŚdown thereâŚâ
âOh.â I sat on the edge of her bed, holding my hands on my lap. âWas she embarrassed? I shouldnât have-â
âNo, she just wanted to make sure it was normal toâŚget allâŚslick and fuck, this is as bad as the sex talk.â
âI thought we did a good job with it,â I said, ruffling her hair. âAre you okay with her being here?â
âDuh,â she said, sitting upright and giving me a hug. âSheâs your soulmate, dad. Of course, I want her to stay with us.â
I tucked her head under my chin, giving her a deep squeeze. âDad. Too tight.â
âAlright,â I said, releasing her. âIâll make sure Y/N understands you already have a mom and-â
âWe kind of talked about that when you were paying.â Em shrugged. âY/N said she didnât want to overstep anything and said itâs probably best right now if weâre more like friends? Until we figure out what we want.â
âIâm going to have a hard time keeping up with you two staying ahead of me,â I chuckled, hearing a loud crash downstairs. I stood up, Em pouting. âStay. Go to bed.â
She grumbled as I left and jogged down the steps. Y/N was bent over in the kitchen, her scent stressed but not in pain.Â
âY/N?â I asked. She popped her head up, swallowing thickly as I saw sheâd dropped her bottle of heat medication and the pills had gone all of the floor. âHey, hey. Whatâs wrong?â
I knelt down and started to help pick them up, Y/N moving farther away to pick up the scattered pills. I reached out and caught her wrist, Y/Nâs breath hitching. She looked over her shoulder, body tense.Â
âIt was an accident,â I said softly. She looked down and I frowned. âHey. I can smell youâre upset but we still need to talk. Whatâs going through that head? Did your brother say something?â
âNo.â She shoved the pills in the bottle, waiting for me to deposit mine inside. The cap snapped on and she shot up, stepping past me for the front door. I caught up to her on the front porch, not touching her but holding up my hands. She squeezed her eyes shut, rubbing her temple. âPlease move. Better yet, take me back to the cabin.â
â...If thatâs where you want to be,â I said. She went straight to the truck, barefoot, climbing inside. I got in after her, leaving my keys in my pocket. I could sense her agitation rising, especially when I turned towards her. âWhat did your brother say, Y/N?â
âHe told me he contacted my dad right after the change. How dad would call him every few years. He didnât know I thought he was dead all this time,â she breathed out. She shook her head, wrapping her arms tight around herself. âYou have an idiot for a soulmate.â
âNow I donât believe thatâs true for a second. I-â
âBeau.â Y/N glared at me but her eyes were more watery than anything else. âYou have a teenage daughter that knows more about how sex works in this world than I do. IâmâŚa child. You deserve so much better than me. Iâve never had a real job. Iâve never had my own place. Shit, my longest relationship lasted two months. J-Just throw me back in the woods so I can be alone.â
Omega in pain. Omega in pain.Â
She moved as far away as possible, staring out the window as a primal urge in my head was trying to take over.
Protect her. PROTECT HER. Do your job.Â
âNo.â She shifted in her sheet, making her eyes as hard as she could. âI donât care if you hate me. I will never abandon you. Ever.â
âIâm a fucking project, not a soumate,â she scoffed.Â
âYou think Iâm perfect?âÂ
âUm, have you met you because yes, you are,â she grit out. I growled, her scent shooting through the roof as I leaned over and cupped her cheek. Her lips parted, breath mingling with my own. âW-What are you doing?â
âI donât like when youâre mean to yourself,â I said, my voice lower than usual as I kept a tight control on letting my Alpha out. Y/N shivered under my touch and she looked away embarrassed. âDonât you dare be embarrassed for making slick. You are in heat next to your true mate. Iâd be concerned if you werenât.â
âI donât know anything,â she whispered, still not looking at me. âI donât know how to be an adult or have my soulmate be someone way out of my league or what you want me to be to Emily. You have an ex-wife and you have such an important job and youâre single dad and it doesnât matter how nice you smell or if you give me lightning bolts. I am and will be a burden to you.â
I sat back in my seat, breathing hard. Y/N sniffled, keeping her head low. âI know Iâve upset you, I can smell it.â
âIâm upset youâre upset. Iâm not upset at you,â I said quietly. Every instinct I had said pull her into my lap, bite her neck and press the magic fix it button to flood her full of so much ooey gooey good feeling crap sheâll never remember why she had doubts in the first place.
Talk to her.
I swallowed, closing my eyes. âMy partner died two years ago. He was my best friend.â
âBeau.â She unfurled her hands from her body surely because one of them was interlacing with my own. âIâm so sorry.â
âI blamed myself for a long time. For too long. For something out of my control,â I said, opening my eyes, finding her misty ones. âIt drove my ex away. It drove Emily away too for a while. Iâm so scared of loving someone else and losing them. Y/N, it took everything in me to not kill those men that attacked you last night. I am not fucking perfect and you are way way too hard on yourself. News flash, nobody knows how to be an adult. Weâre all just pretending and a smart woman like you, hell you already are thinking of my daughter before I am. You are not behind. You are right where youâre supposed to be.â
âIâŚâ She sighed, squeezing my hand. âIâm sorry that happened to your friend.â
âDid you get any of the rest of that?âÂ
âYeah,â she said softly. âSo we both need to take it easier on ourselves.â
âI got faith in us.â She wiped off her face as she nodded, her scent turning calm and gentle. âCome on. Itâs been a long day and youâre at the tail end of your heat. You need to get some rest.â
âDad!â I bottled upright in bed, groggy and reaching for my gun when Emily burst in the bedroom. âItâs almost seven. Move your ass. Iâm not getting detention for being late again because of you.â
âGood morning to you too,â I mumbled, setting my gun back on the bedside table and flopping back against the pillows.
âPro tip,â she said, whacking me with a pillow. I groaned, growling as I sat back up. âMaybe go make you and your new omega girlfriend some coffee? Not like she talked about coffee for like a solid thirty minutes with your coffee snob ass last night.â
âSomeoneâs got a mouth on her this morning,â I said, tossing back the covers, Em rolling her eyes as she left. âWhat?â
âIâm so going to be late,â she muttered, jogging downstairs. I grumbled, padding into the bathroom and getting ready for the day. Em was in a mood when I found her by the front door waiting for me but it was no big deal to me if she was late a few minutes. For one, that school started too damn early at 7:30. She had freaking study hall first period of the day which was just plain stupid. Plus that principal of hers had more than a few unpaid parking tickets I could leverage.Â
I whipped up a cup of coffee and poured the rest in my thermos, tossing some half and half in the mug before whistling on my way outside. âDad!â
âFive minutes, pumpkin. Why donât you lock up and Iâll meet you at the truck?â I slipped outside, Em muttering again as I walked across the yard. WIth two knocks on the door of the airstream, it opened, Y/N half-asleep as she answered in last nightâs clothes. âGood morning, gorgeous.â
âYouâre lucky youâre hot,â she mumbled, perking up when I held out an orange mug. âIs that-â
âCoffee. Two tablespoons half & half. Hold the cream and sugar.â Her eyes welled up as she took the mug. âYou really missed coffee, huh?â
âYou were paying attention to what I said last night,â she whispered. I cocked my head, leaning my hip against the door jam. âThank you for the coffee, Beau. I really appreciate it.â
âNo worries.â The truck horn honked and I rolled my eyes, Y/N smirking. âI have to run before that one hotwires the car without me but Iâll be back and we can go shopping for whatever you need. Food. Clothes. Whatever you want. Iâll be back in about thirty.â
âThanks, Alpha.â She stepped forward and pecked a kiss to my cheek, grinning when I blushed. âThatâs adorable.â
âIâm from Texas. We donât blush,â I said despite feeling the radiating heat on my face. She raised an eyebrow, her smile turning a hair darker. âOmegaâŚâ
âYou know that only makes me want to find out how to make you blush more, right?â I pouted but didnât mean it, Y/N seeing right through it. âAll that for a peck on the cheek. I wonder how red I can get you when I properly kiss you.â
âDown girl,â I purred, adjusting myself and in desperate need of one of my scent blockers again. âLetâs cool our jets. Once we start playing around, itâs going to be hard for either one of us to not want to bond.â
âSorry,â she said, not looking it one bit. She pressed the mug to her lips, eyes closing as she took her first sip. âWow. Yeah, Iâm so keeping you. This is the best cup of coffee Iâve ever had.â
âWell thatâs a relief,â I chuckled, the horn honking incessantly in the background. âIâm sorry about the sassy child.â
âItâs fine. Take her to school. Iâll be here.â
âIâll be right back, darlinâ.â
Four Weeks Later
Y/N was tucked against my side, resting her head on my shoulder and draping her arm over my chest. Soft, slow breaths left her lips, nose buried against my pec. Oh so carefully I thumbed over the fresh bite mark on her neck. Ordinarily Iâd think the best thing to do would be not touch it but instinct was telling me to gently soothe the ache away and her pain would be gone by the time the flood of hormones in her body dropped.
âHow we feeling, Omega?â Y/N tightened her hold on my body, snuggling harder.Â
âFuzzy,â she mumbled, a smile on her lips. âYou?â
âFuzzyâs a good way to describe it,â I chuckled. âYou did so well.â
âNot so bad yourself,â she laughed, eyes closing. âYou smell even nicer now if thatâs possible.â
âI know the feeling.â I stroked my fingers up and down her bare back, tracing patterns against the soft flesh. âSoâŚwould you maybe want to move into the house?â
âYou really know how to pillow talk, babe,â she said against my shoulder, smirking against it. âAnd yes, Iâm tired of being away from you guys.â
âOkie dokie.â Y/N snorted, lifting herself up onto her palms to look at me. âWhat?â
âYouâre way too hot to be that adorable.â I shrugged, smirking as I gripped her waist and pulled her tight against my chest, earning a gasp. âOh you want to play?â
âWith you? Forever.â I grasped her chin with my thumb and finger, pulling her into a deep kiss. âWhoâs ready for round two?â
Three Months Later
âEmmet!â Y/N squealed and jumped into her brothers arms the second I had the front door open. He laughed deeply, dropping his luggage on the porch to catch her.
âFuck Y/N, Iâm forty six years old. Youâre going to throw out my back if you keep doing that every time I visit,â he laughed, spinning her around. âHow you doing, kiddo? Keeping your Alpha in line?â
âShe wishes,â I said, giving him a brief hug when he set her down. âWhereâs Max?â
âSheâs coming up on Saturday. Covering a double at the hospital,â said Emmet, giving Emily a hug when she popped out of the kitchen. âEm, mind helping me get the presents?â
She threw on her coat and boots, following Emmet outside as I saw Y/Nâs father putter around their rental car. Emmet said something to him, the man giving Emily a brief smile before he carefully walked across the shoveled driveway.
âDarren.â
âBeau.â Y/N frowned at him, his jaw clenching when he saw the faded mark on her neck. âEmmetâs right. You really did claim her.â
Y/N stepped onto the porch, waves of powerful scent washing over us. âThis is my house, dad. If youâre going to be a dick, you can go sit in a hotel room by yourself for a week while the rest of us celebrate the holidays. As a pack. Beauâs family is coming in tomorrow and you will not-â
âDown omega,â I purred, Y/N allowing me to pull her back a few steps. âSheâs a tad defensive of me and Emily is all. Darlinâ, why donât you help the Emâs.â
A moment later Darren and I were alone. I nodded, walking him around the wrap around porch to the side of the house where a pair of rocking chairs sat. I took a seat in the far one, Darren hesitantly sitting in the opposite.
âY/N and I like to sit out here in the morning and have our coffee together.â Darren grunted, lips pressed into a thin line. âHowâs the leg?â
âIt hurts,â he grumbled.Â
âBut you can walk on your own on it. Emmet says thatâs a good sign.â He leaned forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees.
âArlen, enough with the small talk. Say what you mean to say away from my daughter.â I leaned back, rocking a few times, enjoying the chill breeze.
âYour daughter didnât want you to come. The only reason you are invited is because I asked her to give you another chance.â He scoffed. âYou were pretty nasty when we showed up at rehab a few months ago and saw she was claimed.â
âYou manipulated her into being with you. She doesnât know it yet but youâll turn on her. I know cops like you, especially cop mutts. Donât blame me for seeing exactly who you are.â
âWell fuck you,â said Emily, appearing around the corner.Â
Back off, pup. I got this.
Only she ignored the warning in my scent, the clear line she would have picked up in favor of storming over in front of Darren. âYouâre an asshole.â
âEm-âÂ
âThe mouth on you,â said Darren, frowning up at her. âYou learn that from your father?â
âIf anyoneâs the manipulative asshole around here maybe itâs the guy who scared his kid into staying in a cabin for a decade,â she spit out. Darren opened his mouth, Emily holding up a hand. âMy dadâs not perfect but thank god I have him. Bad stuff happened to both of us but he doesnât keep me locked up. So maybe stop being an ass to the guy that makes Y/N happy for the first time in ten years.â
âEmily,â I said as she started to walk away. âEm!â
âGround me but I am not apologizing,â she said, walking off back around the corner. I sighed, side eyeing Darren.
âYou know what, you say and think what you want about me but donât you dare speak ill of my daughter,â I said. âShe has been through more shit than you could ever know so do not blame her for being defensive of her family which includes your daughter.âÂ
I stood, putting my hands on my hips, looking out over the barren yard, a light layer of snow dusting it.
âItâs not personal,â said Darren after a beat. âIâd hate any man that tried to take her away. Iâve hated all of her exâs.â
âI know something about having a daughter that was kidnapped.â I turned over my shoulder, Darrenâs face paling. âYou didnât keep her safe. You squashed her. From the moment I met your daughter, Iâve had to help her learn that she can have goals and dreams of her own. She lived her whole life trying to appease you. She will never do that with me. Never. So I understand the fear and pain of dealing with your little girl being taken and feeling like a failure as a father. But we have to let them go because our little girls are a lot stronger than us fathers give them credit for. Let them show us. The only person my kid mouths off with is me, her mother, and Y/N. Her parents. For her to do that just now means you really ticked her off. So stop protecting Y/N for one second and get to know that strong kid of yours.â
He was quiet, no words spoken between us as he rose.
âYour daughter reminds me of Y/N when she was younger.â
âEm adores Y/NâŚaside when Y/N goes mom mode and makes Em do her chores,â I chuckled. Darren cleared his throat. âThe girls are still figuring out their roles but Y/Nâs gotten more comfortable stepping into that parental role. Theyâre friends more than anything. Family.â
âRight,â he said quietly. âHow angry is Y/N with me?â
âOh, pretty mad,â I laughed. âSheâll forgive you eventually. Probably. Iâd stop calling her mate a manipulative mutt, though. Might help out there just a tad.â
He lowered his head with a nod. âLetâs go in before you freeze.â
âAlpha,â Y/N murmured from beside me in bed late that night. I had my face shoved into the crook of her neck, arms bundled under her maroon sweatshirt, formerly our sweatshirt, formerly formerly my sweatshirt. âNoooo, get your greedy hands away from my fleece.â
âNo can do, darlinâ,â I murmured, arms shoved under the soft material, her eyes narrowing. âIâm not going to cop a feel.â
âSure you wonât,â she teased. âWe can play in a minute. Real talk right now.â
âWhatâs up?â I asked, wrapping my arms around her waist, lifting my head. Her fingers raked through my hair, massaging my scalp. I hummed, resting my chin on her shoulder.Â
âI donât know what you said to my dad earlier but thank you. He was different.â
âWell, Emily should really get the credit. She stole my thunder,â I said, Y/Nâs scent swirling around the room. âOur girl really loves you, you know.â
She flushed, smiling when I kissed her jaw. âThank you both then.â
âYouâre welcome. Now,â I said, grabbing the ends of the sweatshirt, pushing them up her body. âI think you stole this.â
âGoing to arrest me for it?â she murmured, pulling me into a chaste kiss before rolling to the far edge of the bed and out of my grasp. She sat up with a fake pout, batting her eyes as I crawled over. âThatâs a good look for you, Alpha. On all fours for me.â
âFor fucks sake, Omega,â I growled, grabbing her ankle and yanking her body underneath mine as she giggled. âWhat am I going to do with you?â
âIâm sure youâll come up with something, Alpha Boy.â I laughed into her neck, kissing over her healed mark.Â
âFor you, Omega, anything at all.â
Welcome to Anna writes another color meta because she's losing her mind.
I made half this point before, but season 7 has more evidence, so I'm gonna make it again, just stay with me. Buck wears a lot of red, right? Staple color for him.
And, well, the coma dream has many elements that make it uncomfortable even if we don't fully realize it, one of them is the way that Buck is wearing green.
(something else is the way he's wearing black vans when he usually wears white hightops, but that's not important right now, but 911 costume department, I worship you)
Why is the green part relevant? Well, red and green are complementary colors, that means they are on opposite sides of the color wheel, and the whole thing with complementary colors is to create contrast. So, since he's usually on this part of the color wheel, the green stands out, even if we don't fully register why.
But the thing is, they put Buck in green when something is wrong. The coma dream, yeah, but the talk with Ali that leads to the breakup, the whole thing with taking Red to see Cindy that completely backfires, and subsequently the conversation with Maddie about being the one who gets left behind, telling Taylor he cheated, talking to Eddie about how he's avoiding Taylor after the Jonah thing, breaking up with Taylor, the cemetery scene, the gym scene in 705.
Those are all scenes where something is wrong, Ali doesn't understand who he is, the whole thing with Red is Buck deciding to do the wrong thing over his idea of what Red needs, the Taylor arc is very self-explanatory, the cemetery feels like he's trying to convince himself of what he's saying a lot more than it sounds like that's something he actually believes, the gym scene he's stressed because he lied to Eddie, it's all at least Buck doing misguided stuff. I feel like at this point, it is very clear that they put Buck in green for this purpose. If Buck is in green, something is most likely wrong.
So, Buck has a something is wrong color. During season 7, I offered the possibility of the show using maroon with Eddie for a similar purpose. But where Buck is about doing misguided stuff most of the time, Eddie is about lying. In a sense.
Eddie's color palette is very earthy. I don't wanna say green is as much of a staple color for him as red is for Buck, but he is usually in army colors, he does wear his fair share of green, greyish-green stuff, it's enough to make sense to some degree if they use maroon to say something is wrong in a direct parallel of what they do with Buck, just going the other way.
But why the maroon during season 7? He's wearing maroon while daydreaming about an idealized Shannon and during the date with Kim. Both situations involve lying to himself, Buck, or whatever. There's also the maroon when Chris leaves. He's not lying, but to say he's pretending to be okay with the situation because it is what Chris wants is not that much of a stretch.
But, I just noticed this dude is wearing maroon when Lena takes him to the first fight, which triggers something dangerous for him. So now we're talking. We have bad shit happening to him and bad shit being triggered by him while he's in maroon.
It opens up a lot in the possibility of them using red in this way for him in other scenes he's wearing reddish stuff. First date with Ana, the nondate with Vanessa, the 612 talk, and I'm gonna throw in the Carla thing too because I need another screenshot lol
Granted, as long as the show doesn't come right out and say Eddie is gay or Eddie was lying about remembering the shooting, these are just speculation and wishful thinking for the most part, but Eddie is peer pressured into the relationship with Ana and ends up admitting he liked the idea of them more than he liked her, so lying to himself, and the Vanessa one, he just plain doesn't want to be there and is agreeing to lie to Pepa so, it's a stretch but ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ the Carla thing, Eddie is at least hiding the Shannon of it all and he was lied to to get there, and while Buck does offer him the answer to a problem that scene, it is a problem he was struggling a lot with and pretending he had it under control. And I will live in a land where Eddie has been aware of his feelings since the shooting and it is lying to Buck about not remembering until the show explicitly proves me wrong, so in my head he is lying to Buck in 612. I'm not nearly as confident on this one as I am with the green and Buck when it comes to the whole show, but at least during s7, they did use it like that, and considering the way he was mostly in black or white during s7, the maroon has to mean something.
Now that we got that out of the way. Why am I telling you all this? It is not just because I think this is yet another way the show makes Buck and Eddie exist as mirrors of each other. It is because of the bachelor party.
Because Buck is in mint green and Eddie is in baby pink.
Buck is absolutely being misguided about what Chim actually wants during this, but I have no idea what Eddie would be lying about though. The interesting thing is that Buck loses the green and Eddie has the darker pink quite literally ripped out of him. Which is an interesting choice all things considered. And they get back to it once we find out Chim is missing.
This is pure speculation that even made me write a fic (self-promo if you feel like reading a confrontation about them almost kissing at the party), but the thing is, everyone involved in this damn show talked too much about this bachelor party for it to be a minute long montage with no lasting consequences and me to feel satisfied with it (rip karaoke scene you will always be wanted). Especially considering with the way we know the episode was actually 2 episodes long and they had to trim everything down (the fact that they tried to shove 18 episodes worth of plot into 10 is gonna make me mad forever, it was a reduced season, make a reduced season) and the ideal world madney's wedding would've been the 2 episode event it deserved to be and we would've gotten more. Do I think the show wanted something to actually happen between them, like a full-blown kiss? No. Do I think a "we are drunk and getting too close" situation was completely plausible? Yes. I mean, Buck was practically pulling Eddie to his lap. And it's not like this is something that can't come back to if they feel like it. Sudden triggers making them remember shit is a perfectly acceptable way to add some tension, push some realizations.
I don't know why, but Buck wearing green there will forever bother me. And with the added layer of Eddie and the maroon, I feel like there has to have a point for that particular costume besides making me want to make The Fairly OddParents jokes.
If we wanna go full conspiracy theory, considering the way the early renewal changed the way they dealt with 7b, I wouldn't be surprised if that party was going to trigger something and they decided against it. We'll never know unless they come back to it, but, nice to think about.
As always, if you read this, I love you.
Other color metas if you like my brand of crazy: blue and green masterpost, red and blue post, blue and yellow theory part one and part two.
Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid) - Baking Challenge
Day 5 of Christmas
Prompt: Baking Challenge
25 Days of Christmas
The camera blinked on, and the familiar hum of festive music filled the air. You grinned as you stood beside Jude Bellingham, Real Madridâs rising star, while Y/n's teammate, Carla Camacho, and her partner in crime for the day, Kylian Mbappe, prepared on the other side of the kitchen.."Hola Madradistas!" Y/n greeted the camera, waving enthusiastically. "Today, weâre bringing you a special Christmas challenge. Jude and I-" She nudged him with her elbow, causing him to chuckle. "are winning." Jude flashed a smile to the camera. "Oh yes. I don't bake but Y/nâs the pro, so Iâm in good hands."
"Good hands?" Carla quipped from across the kitchen, raising an eyebrow. "I think youâre just here for the entertainment, Jude." Kylian joined in with a playful smirk. "And to hold the GoPro, right?" He winked at Y/n, knowing Jude's role was likely going to be more decorative than practical. She rolled her eyes playfully. "Exactly. Jude is the GoPro holder and maybe, maybe heâll help me mix a few ingredients if I trust him enough." Jude looked at the camera in disbelief. "Wow, thanks for the confidence, Y/n." Jude teased. "Iâll do my best!" Jude leaned closer to Y/N, wrapping an arm over her shoulder with an exaggerated smirk. âAnyways, on this side, we have the winning team: Y/n and, of course, yours truly, Jude Bellingham.â
She rolled her eyes dramatically but couldnât help the giggle that escaped. "And on the other side, we have the âtry-hardâ team. Kylian Mbappe and my amazing teammate Carla Camacho." Carla waved enthusiastically at the camera. "Weâre not just trying, weâre winning." Kylian, ever the competitor, crossed his arms and smirked at Jude. "Just so you know, Bellingham, weâve got this." Jude laughed, nudging Y/n. "Letâs just say bakingâs a bit⌠out of my skill set." Y/n turned to him, eyebrows raised. "Thatâs putting it mildly, Jude. Just⌠try not to ruin everything, okay?"
With the introductions done, the card with their assigned task was handed to both teams. Y/nâs eyes scanned the instructions as she tried not to laugh at Judeâs confused expression.
The crew counted down until the time started. 3....2....1....start! Jude knocked a jar of untensils almost immediately, casuing the pair burst into laughter as she pointed to the camera in front of them. "Haven't even started and youve messed it up!" She grabbed the card detailing the challenge and ingredients. "So, weâre making a Christmas cake." She announced to the camera, holding up the recipe card. "Sounds simple enough. Jude leaned in, squinting at the ingredients. "Uh, you sure about that?" Y/n ignored him and quickly divided the tasks, aware of his limited experience in the kitchen. "Alright, Jude, Iâve got an important job for you." His eyes lit up. "Yeah?"
She grinned, grabbing the GoPro from the table. "Youâre going to be our cameraman. Just film the process, and weâll be fine." Jude pouted, but his playful energy was undeniable. "Seriously? Thatâs all I get to do?" She nodded. "Out of order, that is." Jude chuckled and took the stand of the goprop, adjusting it like it was some highly technical piece of equipment. "Alright, babes. What are we doing?" He said with a wink, focusing it on you. Carla laughed as she and Kylian began grabbing their ingredients. "Youâre giving him the easy job, Y/n! Thats cheating, no?" The crew agreed. "Trust me, it's for the best." Y/n replied, already sifting flour into a bowl. "If you guys wanna be home at a respectable hour, you'll let us do our thing and let them do their's." Jude faked a look of offense but quickly turned his grin back toward the GoPro, focusing on her with it. "Right, filming duties it is. Iâll make sure to get your good side, Y/n." He added cheekily. "Every side is my good side." She retorted. Jude was taken back by that answer and looked over to the main camera. She couldnât help but laugh, shaking her head as she concentrated on her task. "Just don't mess this up, Jude. The cake is what matters."
Although Y/n and Jude's side seemed chaotic, things were moving slower. Jude, holding the GoPro a little too close to his face, was narrating their every move in an over-the-top commentator voice. "Here we see Y/n expertly cracking eggs. Will she succeed, or will it all go horribly wrong? Stay tuned!" Y/n tried not to laugh, her focus on measuring the butter. "Jude, please! This is serious!" Jude leaned in with the GoPro. "Very serious, indeed."
As she measured out the ingredients, Jude leaned closer, whispering. "I feel like weâve already won this. No oneâs gonna even notice what the cake looks like when weâre the one's making it, right?" Y/n bit back a smile, glancing at him. "Yeah, but Iâm not sure we get extra points for flirting." She grinned. "Maybe we should." Jude shot back with a wink, making her laugh harder. "Alright, focus!" Y/n said, waving a spoon in front of him while trying not to blush. "Weâve got a cake to make."
Carla, already working diligently with Kylian, glanced over and raised an eyebrow. "Is anyone baking on your team or just flirting?" Kylian chuckled. "You know, Carla and I might actually win this thing at this rate." Jude pointed the GoPro at them, narrowing his eyes. "Weâre strategizing over here, thank you very much. Y/nâs just multitasking better than you lot."
"Right." She said, holding back a laugh as you stirred the mixture. Jude kept panning the camera over her shoulder, making silly commentary every few minutes. Y/n had to pause multiple times, either because she was laughing too hard or because Jude distracted her with another one-liner. At one point, he leaned in closer. "Youâre really good at this, you know? Maybe I should let you take charge more often." She playfully nudged him away. "I always take charge. Youâre just here for moral support." He grinned. "Iâm killing it at that part, though, right?"
"Sure." She giggled. After a few more moments of him joking around, Jude finally set the GoPro aside and asked. "Come on, let me do something."
Y/n looked at him cautiously, hesitating. "Can you?" He handed her the GoPro, not even giving her an answer. "Can I mix? I'm not a complete idiot." He scoffed. "Okay, you can mix the batter. But donât break anything, alright?" As Y/n filmed, Jude gave his own commentary. "So, the technique Im doing bere is clockwise and then anti-clockwise because...science, I think." Y/n sniggerwd behind the camera upon hearing his reasoning. "And I'm moving the bowl too because by doing this, it'll get more flavour. Camera-girl, am I right, or am I right?" He asked. Y/n turned the GoPro to focus on herself. "He's just in his own little world. I'm taking a well deserved break and-" She was cut off by the glass bowl falling onto the ground and shattering, the whole batter now on the floor. She turned the GoPro to Jude, matching her equally shocked face. "Jude!" Y/n gasped, wide-eyed. Judeâs grin slowly returned to his face, both embarrassed and stifling laughter. "Okay, okay, I can explain!" Y/n shook her head, trying not to laugh but failing miserably. "You had one job, Jude. One!"
From across the table, Kylian and Carla paused, watching the scene unfold. Kylian smirked. "Mate, what is that?" Jude raised his hands in mock defense. "Itâs not my fault! The bowl just slipped!" Y/n, still chuckling, grabbed a new bowl and shooed him away. "Alright, new plan. Youâre officially banned from anything breakable. Just⌠film again." Jude picked up the GoPro with a guilty grin. "You know Iâm more of an production guy than a baking guy, right?"
"Trust me, Iâve noticed."
Despite the chaos, Y/n managed to mix the cake batter smoothly. She poured it into the tin, with Judeâs constant commentary keeping her laughing. "And now, the queen of baking herself, Y/n, swoops in to save the day, as always." After what felt like a small miracle, the cake was in the oven. Y/n turned to Jude, giving him a light shove. "Youâre lucky Iâm good at this." Y/n said exasperated into the camera. "Iâm just here to make you look even better." He teased, leaning in closer, his playful smirk never leaving his face.
decorating the cake as the finishing touches came together. After some strategic placement of holiday-themed decorations and a light dusting of powdered sugar, you stood back and admired your creation. It was no masterpiece, but it was festive and definitely presentable. "Done!" She announced proudly, and Jude zoomed in with the GoPro. "Look at that! Thatâs teamwork right there." He said, though most of the work had been her own. Carla and Kylian also finished around the same time, presenting their cake, which was surprisingly neat. The four players gathered in front of the camera again for the big reveal.
As the teams presented their final products to the camera, Jude leaned in close to Y/n. "See, I didnât ruin everything. Y/n smiled, shaking her head. "You came pretty close." Carla glanced over and laughed. "Alright, moment of truth." Jude said, still holding the GoPro close to your cake. "Who did it better?" They tried one another's cakes, both acty ending up very well. "Well, I think you two win for most⌠entertaining, at least." Carla smiled. Kylian nodded along. "But if we're talking about overall, I think we all know the answer here."
"No, no, no." Y/n interjected. "Our cake is festive and cute, and most importantly, edible." Jude nodded enthusiastically, pointing at the camera. "Yep, edible is key. And look at that snowflake design. Pure artistry from us." She turned and arched a brow at him, making the other two laugh. "Anyway, we win for sure."
"No, you donât." Carla laughed. "Carla! Te golpeaste la cabeza o quĂŠ? AsĂ es como se supone que debe saber un pastel! Try it again!" The trio laughed as Y/n grantically fed her teammate another piece. "Not bad, right? Even with Jude just filming!" Jude laughed, finally dropping the GoPro and grabbing a fork. "Hey, I helped with morale! And filming is harder than it looks!"
As the camera cut off, Jude leaned in close, his voice low. "Next time, I promise Iâll actually help bake." He said. "Good." She replied with a smirk. "Because Iâm not carrying you through every challenge, Bellingham." He chuckled, that familiar playful glint in his eyes. "You know you love it."
fairy tail dragon slayer headcanons pt. 1
⥠what the first gen and second gen dragon slayers eat is pretty self-explanatory. all of their elements are... somewhat tangible. sting and rogue though? they're still figuring it out. rogue wonders if he can eat someone else's shadow, and sting immediately volunteers himself. "for science!" he says. the result is that sting almost passes out. oops. he insists they try on their friends, much to rogue's displeasure. the results are that sting is the most susceptible, then yukino, rufus, orga, and minerva is the least susceptible to magic drainage. sting insists rogue tries to eat an inanimate object's shadow, and nothing happens to it, so they decide that's the way to go.
⥠when wendy eats air, the oxygen levels thin. she has to be careful or she'll cause her allies and enemies alike to pass out. when sting eats light, the area gets darker and darker. this is great for rogue, who starts eating the shadows, and they manage to balance each other out.
⥠sting insists that different types of light taste differently. his favorite is light from golden hour, right when the sun is dipping below the horizon. moonlight will do in a pinch, but it's so diluted that it takes way more of it to recover sting's magic. he also gets sick if he eats too much moonlight.
⥠pantherlily already has transformation magic and enhanced strength, and carla learns to transform so she can help wendy fight. the other three exceeds feel... a little left out. happy learns how to fly faster and for longer (though he still complains about lucy being heavy). lector goes to porlyusica and wendy to learn some stamina regeneration spells for sting. everyone is surprised when frosch, completely on their own, manages to learn an adorable light spell that creates floating pink bubbles. rogue can consume the shadows from them without worrying about draining frosch's magic, and he spends the entire afternoon crying about it.
⥠dragon slayers are a bit like crows. their way of bonding with someone is through gifting trinkets. natsu will bring lucy, erza, and even gray pretty rocks or seashells that he's found on jobs. wendy picks up a new craft or hobby every week, so the members of fairy tail are constantly recieving handmade accessories from her (gajeel helps during the metalsmithing phase). gajeel does not buy cute things for people. he is like a dad in the fact that, when juvia mentions she wants watermelon, he buys her 20 watermelons. walking math problem fr.
⥠laxus has mixed feelings about his more draconic features and habits. he's never loved his magic because of the way he got it, and the memory of his father basically torturing him as he inserted the lacrima will stay with him forever. he tends to suppress dragon instincts more than anyone else in the group, and they all scold him for it. on a rare occasion, laxus will give in and buy something shiny (like a hairclip) for wendy. she has a little jewelry box for them that she guards fiercely.
⥠cobra considers himself more of a flying snake than a dragon. he once drew a picture that sent everyone into a laughing fit. he prefers to stick with the old oración seis crew, but the guild dragon slayers are always happy to see him when he stops by with crime sorcière.
⥠sting, because of his heightened senses and his affinity for light, prefers nighttime. the day can often be overwhelming, and overexposure to bright settings and lots of people leaves his skin buzzing. he likes to sit in the dim guild hall, leaning against the cool stone wall, as the chatter of the crowd quiets down with the setting sun.
⥠dragon slayers all have the Bite instinct. some exercise a degree of control about it, and others go crazy with it. wendy will very gently nibble on erza or mira's arm when she's in the mood, and sometimes she does it absentmindedly. natsu, on the other hand, is an absolute menace. multiple of erza's armor sets have natsu-shaped bite marks on them. he tends to go after her the most because he knows he won't hurt her with the armor. when natsu's more calmed down, he will chomp on lucy's shoulder. gajaeel copes by eating all of fairy tail's silverware (mira starts buying ceramic spoons), but when levy offers her wrist to him he can't help it.
⥠rogue is another one who doesn't really bite people. he, very rarely, nips at frosch's ears, which causes the exceed to giggle. sting is a Biter like natsu, but with slightly more decorum. he really wants to go at it but will restrain himself because most people aren't willing to be treated like a chew toy. luckily for him, gray and cana aren't most people! because they both wear pretty exposing clothing, gray and cana have no qualms about showing off sting's bite marks on their skin. sting always turns bright red when they tease him about it.
⥠laxus and cobra don't really feel the Bite instinct due to being second gen, but cobra is a little shit and bites people for the fun of it. laxus is completely unbothered when natsu clings to him like a koala and gnaws at him.
#lychee writes#gray and cana are best friends with sting. loke too. this is canon mashima told me#minerva taught frosch the spell btw but she'll take that secret to her grave#genuinely how does one eat light or shadow though#I can't even visualize itđ#fairy tail#fairy tail headcanons#natsu dragneel#wendy marvell#gajeel redfox#laxus dreyar#sting eucliffe#rogue cheney#cobra#sabertooth#dragon slayer#gajevy#if u squint
Ok, Iâve been tossing this AU around in my head for AGES, and I have to get it out or Iâm gonna explode.
So in TEC, itâs made pretty clear that there are numerous risks to reviving Butler that even the fairies canât fully account for. No healing like his had ever been attempted before, and there was really no telling what was gonna happen.
What if, in the face of all this, Holly refuses to heal him?
Sheâs not a trained medical warlock. Sheâs on her own. And sheâs being asked to desecrate the body of her friend, with unknown, possibly catastrophic results. She refuses, tries her best to console Artemis and goes home.
Now, a lot changes from here.
Artemis obviously isnât giving up hope. He transfers Butler to longer term cryogenic storage and has human surgeons fix his wounds as best they can in the meantime.
Artemis and Hollyâs friendship is shattered. Artemis could never forgive her for not even trying to heal Butler. Holly doesnât hate him in turn, but she does (mostly) believe she did the right thing, and wishes he would see her point of view. The LEP might still occasionally contact Artemis for help (though not for long - Iâll get to it) but the two of them remain, at absolute best, frosty around each other from then on.
Spiro and Blunt are no longer getting the âoff to prisonâ treatment lmao. Artemis contacts Carla Frazetti and convinces the Chicago mob to turn on Spiro and assassinate both him and Blunt. Afterward, Artemis ends up taking Spiroâs place as benefactor and strategist for the mob. In return, Carla provides him with a security detail when needed (which is how Iâm getting around Artemis not dying without Butler every 5 minutes lmao). The relationship proves very beneficial to Carla, and absolutely horrible for Artemisâs moral compass.
Artemis becomes obsessed with learning how to use magic - if the fairies wonât heal Butler, heâll do it himself. This strains his working relationship with the LEP to the breaking point, and he eventually becomes a fairy fugitive. (Iâll be honest, this one is just bc I think Warlock!Artemis is cool as hell. They shouldâve let him keep the magic >:(((( ) (Also cue tragic-yet-awesome scene where Holly is trying to bring him in and they get into a magic fight. The drama. The cinema).
Speaking of his magic! Artemis is no longer actively monitoring Foalyâs work, and the calculation error for the demons goes unnoticed until far too late. Thousands die in Hybrasâs return to Earth, and the fairies come dangerously close to being revealed altogether.
When Artemisâs Atlantis Complex hits, because of his decidedly more amoral life path and extra dabbling in magic, itâs a hundred times worse. He has full blown hallucinations, panic attacks, multiple alters, and can no longer access fairy help for any of it. He stumbles by with human OCD treatments, but itâs not nearly as effective. He still refuses to see a psychiatrist.
Eventually, years down the line, Artemis masters magic well enough to revive Butler. Itâs both better and worse than it wouldâve been had Holly healed him - he no longer has to deal with the Kevlar strands thanks to the human medical intervention, and Artemis was able to train for years specifically to heal him, but the extra time in stasis means it takes even more of Butlerâs life force to revive him.
When Butler finally awakes, he no longer recognizes the cold, paranoid, angry young man he used to dutifully protect. Butler may have been the one who was revived, but itâs Artemis who came back wrong.
Thereâs a million different ways this AU could go, but this is the stuff Iâve been tossing around. Also I know for a fact I havenât hit every plot hole - PLEASE please share what you guys think would happen with me!! As of rn, I have no name for this AU, so I would appreciate suggestions for that too lmao
#artemis fowl#fowldom#one thing I like about this AU is there's a lot of room for interpretation#p much anything could happen after Holly leaves#if you guys want to take this idea and run w it please do! go nuts!!#and please do help me w a name bc I am terrible at those lmao
All these years (Part 1)
Pairing: Charles Leclerc x Ex girlfriend! Reader
Warnings: anxiety attack, fights, brake ups and maybe other things.
Summary: Separated by a disagreement, Charles and Y/n meet again after years apart and all the feelings they had repressed come flooding back.
Next Chapter
Having to go back to Monaco was certainly not in my plans.
I had sworn to myself the day I left that I would never go back, but I had never actually kept that promise.
His family lives there and I've never been able to stop seeing them. Of course, I made them promise never tell him that I was still visiting them and they kept their promise.
I know this because I never received a call or an angry message.
Charles Marc HarvĂŠ Perceval Leclerc.
My first everything.
And I mean that in the literal sense of the word.
My first friend, my first kiss, my first boyfriend, the guy I had my first time with.
But most importantly.
My first and only true love.
When I moved to the house next to them, we connected as soon as we were introduced to each other.
We never had many friends because we knew we had everything we needed in each other.
He was the best boyfriend a girl could ask for.
But one thing about him was wrong.
His lack of understanding at times.
Charles was always a calm, fun guy who could make my shitty day 100% better.
But in March 10th, 2018.
That was the day everything we had went down the drain.
Charles was focused on getting his first year in Formula 1 off to a good start and I was focused on getting a job since I had just graduated from architecture school.
And I received the best offer a recent graduate could get.
It was an internship at an architecture firm.
The problem was that it was in Milan and Charles and I lived in Monaco and because of Formula 1 he wasn't going to leave.
I remember exactly the day I went to tell him excitedly that I'd got one of the best jobs I could ever want.
But Charles, contrary to what I thought, didn't have the best reaction, in fact he was very upset that the job wasn't in Monaco.
That's when our fights started, me because he didn't understand how important he was to me and an offer I couldn't refuse.
And him for saying that I'd ruined all our plans.
That day we'd had a bad fight, but the next day when I went to talk to him to try and sort it out, we fought again.
He said that I was the worst person he had ever met, that I would be a horrible wife and that our children would be ashamed to have a mother like me.
That day I cried so much that I had a horrible anxiety attack and had to go to hospital because of shortness of breath.
And he never showed up.
From that day on we never saw each other again, five years passed and here I was returning to Monaco for the wedding of Arthur, Charles' younger brother.
He and Carla were getting married after a year of being engaged and I remember how happy I was when he called to tell me that she had accepted and thanked me for helping him choose the ring.
I knew I would meet him there, I just didn't know if I was ready to see him.
Even more so in a situation like this.
"So, are you ready to see Charles?" Kika sits on the bed while I pack the last of my clothes.
"Certainly not, but what choice do I have?"
"You could have chosen not to go."
"I couldn't do that to Arthur, he was the only one who always supported me in everything, unlike his brother." I sighed, remembering him. "And I want to go, I want to see him marry the love of his life."
"I understand, and I know he'll love that you're going."
"But one day it would happen, we have so many things and people that keep us connected, so it took a while to happen."
"But you'll be fine."
"I know."
"Why are you getting so many clothes?"
"Because I don't know how long I'll have to stay there."
"What do you mean?" she asks confused.
"Because my father always convinces me to stay longer than I want to."
"I see."
"Well, I have to go soon, it's a long drive to get there."
We said goodbye and I got straight into the car and started driving there.
It was going to be a long trip.
25 Days of Ficmas
Relationship: Marko x Reader
Fandom: The Lost Boys
Request: No
Warnings: Fluff
Word Count: 1,381
Main Masterlist: Here
Lost Boys Masterlist: Here
Summary: Christmas time brings out a variety of smells that Markoâs human girl is more than happy to introduce him too, and even have him introduce her to some.
Consider Donating: Here
Christmas was about being together and sharing. Nothing was easier to share than delicious food and drinks. And when two people come from two different cultures? Oh, now that is a match made in Christmas heaven.
Marko was happily being dragged through the night market the next town over from Santa Carla by his girlfriend one winterâs night. It was a brisk sixty-eight degrees, meaning that she was bundled up ever so cutely. Her customer jacket made by the vampire next to her was holding a hoodie together underneath, and a long sleeve under that. It was not at all difficult for them to find one another considering how eccentric their jackets were, but that was just how they liked it.
âCome on, Marko! The stall is this way.â Her cheerful scream broke free from the ambient noise around them. He continued to follow after her, laughing occasionally as she got more and more excited the closer they got.
The stall she had mentioned was gorgeous. Spices from all over the world sat in large quantities across multiple tables. There were whole spices and herbs, dried and fresh, ground in various grades; it was perfect. It was something that Marko had not seen since being turned. Human food had little effect over him now. His body processed it too quickly to be full from it. And he was pretty sure that, even as weird as the vampire world was, spicing blood was considered odd.
His little human began to peruse the piles for everything that she needed for her own Christmas treats. She was placing normal things into pouches for purchase; cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, rosemary, thyme, oregano, peppercorns, and more. Marko was just enjoying watching her shop, but came to rest along her back with his hands on her waist.
âHmm⌠Marko,â he hummed in acknowledgement, âdo you think I should get anything else? I have the usuals that Iâm low on, but it would be a shame to come here and not try a new spice or two.â
âWhat are you making this season?â
Her list was rattled off almost too fast for him to keep up with, but he got it eventually. It sounded like the usual menu for this time of year. Roasts, pies, spiced cider, and cookies of different kinds.
âTry that.â He pointed to a pile of what appeared to be dried flowers.
âThatâs called Blade Mace. Itâs like nutmeg but not as strong. Itâs good in savory and sweet dishes when you donât wanna go too heavy in nutmeg flavoring. Also, get some of that black garlic over there. Thatâll change up your roasts in a good way.â
With his suggestions, she made quick work of collecting the items. She made sure to take the time to smell each ingredient and gave her approval with each sniff. Once everything was bagged and ready to go, the couple joined the queue for the checkout. However as they rounded the corner, a specific scent caught Markoâs nose. This was a smell he had not smelled in decades, and was afraid that he would never smell again.
Sitting in a shallow barrel like container, were porcini mushrooms. His eyes grew wide, and his mouth hung open in wonder. The vampire barely registered that his feet were moving him away from his girlfriend, and towards the item that had snatched his attention away. As he allowed his eyes to rake over the mushrooms, and his nostrils to fill with their intoxicating scent, Marko felt a hand through the thick material of his jacket pull his attention back.
âYou alright there, âKo,â she softly asked him.
âYeah,â he breathed a shaky breath, âitâs just⌠I remember these from when I was a kid. My Nona would use these in our Christmas meals to add this wonderful flavor. Specifically, she used it in a risotto that was served every Christmas feast. It was always my favorite thing on the table and she would make extra so that I could have my own dish of it.â The joy and childlike sparkle in his eyes moved her heart as she listened to her lover.
There was a beat of silence between the two of them. Quiet breathing filled the space, and the line moved again. But she did not care. Reaching for another bag, she grabbed a handful or two of dried mushrooms to take home. The action made the vampire jump out of his skin before looking towards his girlfriend with a confused expression. Tying off the bag, she sent him a wink and a smile as she moved to the end of the line once again.
âLetâs see if I canât find a recipe for these involving some risotto.â Her teasing smile stunned Marko who just wrapped his arms around her. She giggled as he buried his head into her neck, pressing light kisses to her throat.
âI love you so much, bella.â
The next night, when Marko was able to get away from his brothers, he had made his way up to the steps of her house. His bike was resting outside on the curb. Three knocks was all it took to call her to the door, and the image that greeted him was amazing. She was in an apron that had just a couple of stains from the years. Her hair was up with some strands out, giving her a comfortable appearance. And that smile that stretched across her face? That was the killer for him.
âMarko! Welcome in, sweetheart.â They shared a kiss as he stepped inside, and placed his coat on the back of the couch.
âSmells good, bella.â A symphony of smells greeted him from the kitchen. Marko went to try and help her, but she quickly shooed him towards the dinning room without an explanation.
Sitting at the beautiful wooden table, Marko twiddled his thumbs, and messed with his fingers. Never once had she not let him help her plate or bring food to the table. He did not know whether or not that was a good thing. But the second she started bringing food out, he relaxed a bit.
His favorite roast chicken that she loved to make was joined by various vegetables and mashed potatoes. For all intents and purposes, this was a proper Christmas dinner. Before he could dig in though, Markoâs girlfriend hit him with, âwait one second,â and she disappeared into the kitchen again. When she came backs with a bowl, he did not know what she had. But once she set it down, he was able to see inside.
A simple bowl of risotto. Taking a smell, he could smell those delicious mushrooms that they had gotten the previous night. Before she could properly brace herself, Marko had tackled her to the ground. He had begun pressing lots of kisses to every inch of her skin he could reach.
âThank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.â Marko kept muttering in between each kiss he laid over her face and neck. Eventually he had to lead up as her hands had moved him to allow her to breathe. Her face was flushed and glowing, and her smile was beaming.
âYouâre welcome, âKo. Now, do you wanna eat the food that I made before it gets cold?â
The vampire rushed to stand up and helped his girlfriend as well. He took his place once more while she went to make sure everything was off. Marko began to divvy up the food once she got back, and they both settled in to their festive meal. As soon as Marko took a bite of the risotto though? It was all over for him. He legitimately thought he was going to cry over how good it tasted.
âSweetie, you okay?â Her hand swiped against the droplet that had fallen down the swell of his cheek.
âYeah, Iâm just so- so happy. Bella, this tastes exactly like how I remember,â came his reply. She felt a surge of pride as she rested her hand atop his.
âWell, I can make you this every Christmas from now on.â
âOh no. Now that I know you can make this, youâre gonna make this way more often. This is gonna be on the table every time now.â
