A sample from "Unfortunate", with Shawna Hamic absolutely killing it as Ursula, as we see her story from a slightly different point of view.
Currently playing at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant until 17 February 2024.

"1776" Review
"1776," performed at Chicago's CIBC Theatre, startled me. Going into the theatre, I knew I was going to see a satire performed by a diverse, all-woman/trans cast. But the nuances and conflict this musical portrays were far beyond my expectations for what I thought would be a purely patriotic love song to the United States of America.
The musical lives in sacrifice. The congress members sacrifice time with their loved ones to make decisions for their colonies; we hear of the sacrifice the soldiers and citizens on the front lines of the Revolutionary War are making; but the biggest sacrifice made revolves around freedom -- true freedom. Every moment of tension between those motioning for and against revolution comes to a head in "Molasses to Rum," performed to eerie, unsettling perfection by Kassandra Haddock and the chorus. One group in the congress want to free the people enslaved by the colonizers, and the rest dissent, citing the fact that their entire economy, not just the South, is benefitting from the practice. Haddock as Edward Rutledge and Nancy Anderson as Thomas Jefferson argue about the hypocrisy of slavery in their nation -- the former citing the point above and the fact that Jefferson is an enslaver, and the latter urging that the Congress cannot call for freedom of the colonies without calling for freedom of all that live in those colonies. Obviously, I do not need to say which side is correct or what ended up happening in the end, but the nuance this scene brings to the musical swallows up any ounce of patriotism for the sake of tradition and spits it out like a bite of rotten food.
Other portrayals of principal characters I would be remiss not to mention are Gisela Adisa as John Adams, who so wholly embodies the role that I cannot imagine anyone else in it now; Shawna Hamic as Richard Henry Lee, who has one solo but portrays it with such a charismatic and comedic flare that it was among the best performances of the night; Liz Mikel as Benjamin Franklin, who was at the same time a major force to be reckoned with in the plot and an excellent comedic scene partner; and Anissa Marie Griego as Roger Sherman, who used their small amount of solo time to add a smooth, bright flare to the quartet they were featured in.
But honestly, I'd mention everyone who opened their mouth onstage if I could.
It's a crime how many empty seats there were in that audience -- though I was pleased to see far more filled seats on Ticket Ticketmaster for the show's final performance in Chicago. "1776" is on stage in Des Moines next, so Iowans, snatch up your tickets while you can.
The Chorus Line
The Congress that made up the chorus was a blast. It's hard to say they were a chorus because they were each embodying one of the members of the 2nd Continental Congress, but there was a seamless cohesion about the group that comes with a chorus filled with people who have solid chemistry with one another.
On a Personal Note
I am not typically brought to tears by a piece of media, but something in this show reached me twice. The first occurred during a violin solo performed by Anderson, accompanied by projections of images of American history. I am not a patriotic person, so I searched for why this performance was touching me so deeply, and I found it was the pain -- the images were not only happy memories but tragic, sorrowful events, as well. That brings me to the second moment. Haddock's "Molasses to Rum" evokes what I think politicians trying to keep Critical Race Theory out of schools are afraid of. I felt a deep shame for our nation, followed by gratitude that we've graduated from that point in our history, followed by more shame and dread with the realization that we haven't. Slavery -- outside of the prison system -- is not legal in the U.S. anymore, but ignoring infrastructural growth in Black and Brown communities isn't, technically; food desserts/food apartheid isn't, technically; environmental racism isn't, technically; and refusing to require reparations to be paid to descendants of enslaved people definitely isn't. We've come a long way. But the politics in "1776," though they took place over 250 years ago, serve as just another reminder that we still have a long way to go.

“Wedding Chorale” and “Beggars at the Feast,” US 4th National Tour, 2011. Richard Vida as Thénardier, Shawna Hamic as Mme. Thénardier, Justin Scott Brown as Marius.
An exuberant performance that must have been hilarious in person, judging by the audience’s laughter. Richard’s Thénardier exudes smug slime from his voice alone, while Shawna’s Mme. Thénardier compliments him perfectly, and Justin’s Marius exudes well-deserved contempt for them.
The ensemble sounds a bit hammy – e.g. the evidently drunk Major Domo – but in a way that suits the tone of the scene.
It’s interesting that this production divided Thénardier’s traditional solo lines in “Beggars at the Feast” between him and his wife. As I’ve mentioned before, this is a trend I’ve noticed throughout the 2000s: giving more of Thénadier’s lines to his wife and making her more of his equal, not just his sidekick.

Brick Club 2.3.2 “Two Portraits Filled In”
Hugo acknowledging how much more stressful and intense and exhausting life is for women while discussing Mme Thenardier is interesting. If Mme Thenardier’s life was hard and she was essentially ten years older than her actual age, then we must imagine how much worse it was for Fantine.
(I desperately wish any of the film versions of the Brick had cast Shawna Hamic from the 2011 US tour as Mme Thenardier. She was absolutely perfect in every way as that role. She’s also really really nice.)
Mme Thenardier is the opposite of Sister Simplice in how not-a-woman she is. Simplice is not a woman because she is essentially a sacred being, a sexless vessel of piety and faith. Mme Thenardier is not a woman because she lacks the grace, poise, frame, etc. Essentially, Simplice is not a woman because she is So Pious and Mme Thenardier is not a woman because she is So Brutish.
Thenardier appropriates and twists the history of the last of the Guard and Cambronne’s death in order to create a fictional glory for himself. Only he’s the lone survivor standing ground against the Hussars Of Death rather than Cambronne standing ground against English artillery. And he gets to survive it, in his story, because of course he does. Cambronne was great because he was defiant despite the fact that he didn’t survive. Thenardier is a sleaze, so he’s going to survive, because that’s what he does. He is the opposite of Cambronne, who will sacrifice his life for France and Napoleon; Thenardier will sacrifice others for his own benefit, and will try as hard as possible to survive himself.
Again, we see Thenardier as the embodiment of that sort of mobile cour des miracles that we saw on the field of Waterloo. He can and will change his manner and face and conversation to fit the circumstances. He can place his past or his origin anywhere in time or space that is most useful. He is an actor, a player on the stage of life in order to swindle whatever he can.
Thenardier plays the trickster role in this book. Some characteristics of a trickster: he breaks both societal and physical rules; he can often often shapeshift; his antics hurt or affect or discomfort the protagonists, but he is usually ultimately left untouched; often a trickster character will have gender variability, which we see in Thenardier’s letters to get money; he is often boastful and openly mocking of authority. We see all of these characteristics in Thenardier across the arc of the novel.
It’s so funny that Hugo says that “practiced eyes” found spelling mistakes in Thenardier’s bills, considering the severe amount of mistakes we see in his letters later on in Paris. Did he just become a worse speller when he left Montfermeil? Or was he better able to hide it because presumably bills only really need certain words?
I get the feeling the Mme Thenardier’s view of Thenardier (at least at this moment) is partially informed by her reading of romance books. She obviously isn’t living the life she wanted, and who knows if she was this brutish before being stuck with Thenardier or not. In any case, she wants something else, and that desire is probably increased by her romance novel-reading, and she start to see Thenardier as unknowable, and as the “object of universal desire” that she gets to have and be jealous over. I wonder how much her romantic propensities blinded her, and if she might have become jaded towards Thenardier even earlier than we see in the book. By the time the Thenardiers are in Paris, that veil has definitely fallen away and Mme Thenardier is much more willing to argue with her husband.
The sheer amount of abuse that Cosette endures is laid out in only a few examples here, but I’m sure it’s much more extensive. Mme Thenardier is physically abusive in a much more “forward” way, beating Cosette and knocking her around and insulting her. Thenardier, in character, is much more sinister. He doesn’t seem to actually interact with her much, but he disallows her shoes and probably takes other things from her like food and warm clothes etc. It was probably him that decided to make her eat under the table like a dog.
“The ideal of oppression was realized in this dismal servitude.” What Cosette is going through is extreme, but she’s another Symbol here. This is how society treats women, collectively. They are made to slave away, cold and hungry, to be called names and beaten and to be denied comfort. There aren’t child labor laws in France for about another decade. Cosette is one girl, one child, but we can imagine that there are many others like her out there. And the Thenardier’s treatment of her is ideal in keeping her oppressed: physical abuse paired with neglect and psychological abuse that renders her passive, silent, and terrified. However, later we see her true personality peek through, and the way her strength carries her through all this suffering.

This is somewhat more obstructed than other shows because the person in front was leaning forward and moving a lot, so there's a head in some of the scenes. I Listened to the Miss You Like Hell OCR So You Don’t Have To
Alright so I was supposed to be doing a review of Girl from the North Country this week, but this musical found me, slapped me in the face, and forced me to listen to it. Miss You Like Hell is a 2018 Off-Broadway written by the musician Erin McKeown and Quiara Alegria Hudes, whom you may know from In the Heights. The show follows Olivia (played by Gizel Jimenez), a teenager who undertakes a road-trip across the country with her estranged mother (played by Daphne Rubin-Vega), who is an undocumented Mexican immigrant.
Already, just by looking at this cast/creative, you can probably guess this musical would appeal to the In the Heights fans, and you’d absolutely be right. The music isn’t the typical showtunes either; it’s kind of a blend between alternative rock and showtunes. It’s almost hypnotic in the way the music blends together.
For the most part, the recording is easy to understand, as long as you do your homework. Through a combination of the wikipedia page and a Playbill article, it’s pretty self-explanatory. There’s also plenty of videos of the musical on YouTube that may help visually. From what I’ve seen online, the hair and makeup is pretty much spot-on, despite it only being an exhausted-travel aesthetic.
Conclusion: Overall, I’d definitely recommend this musical if you’re looking for a quiet, afternoon listen. It’s a pretty short recording so it doesn’t take up much time, and you may even find a few gems in there. Have fun listening!
Cast: Marinda Anderson, Danny Bolero, Andrew Cristi, Latoya Edwards, Shawna M. Hamic, Marcus Paul James, Gizel Jiménez, David Patrick Kelly, Michael Mulheren, Daphne Rubin-Vega, and Martín Solá

An Almost Amazing Musical
Or why I might come back to Miss You Like Hell once it opens to see if they made any changes
Look, I really wanted to love this musical. I was SO excited when it was announced for this season at The Public. When my friend and I decided to get rush tickets last night I was completely thrilled. I went in there expecting to be completely floored.
I wasn’t, but that doesn’t mean it was bad.
I liked it. I liked it a whole lot. But I wanted to love it. I wanted it to be better. I’ll tell you what I liked about it though.
Daphne Rubin-Vega as Beatriz is phenomenal. She’s incredible. I knew she’d be amazing and I wasn’t disappointed. Even though I had problems with a lot of the songs, she sang them so beautifully. She put so much emotion into so many cringeworthy lines that it didn’t matter because you could feel what she was feeling. I was with her character the entire show. I felt for her. I teared up a little bit towards the end at her Big Emotional Moment. She was so wonderful. Likewise, I thought her character was super interesting and really well-rounded and dynamic and an honest portrayal of a mother that is seldom seen.
Latoya Edwards as Pearl was fantastic and I wish she was in the show more. She was such a bright light in the show and brought so much joy to it all.
For the most part, I really enjoyed the staging and set design. The backdrop is super beautiful and there’s a set change that I’m not gonna talk about because it’s a spoiler that is super powerful and really heartbreaking. There are some beautiful stage pictures throughout and it was during these moments that I thought “This is what this musical could be. This is what the whole musical could be, not just bits and pieces” I will say that the staging for two of Pearl’s songs are really lovely and I wish that aesthetic was consistent throughout the show.
I like the story. It’s super interesting and, as Oskar Eustis says in his playbill note, not something often discussed in musicals. It’s a mother-daughter story and it’s really wonderful. Likewise, it deals with immigration and who you are and your roots. I just wish the actual writing and music and lyrics were as interesting and complex as the story because I can honestly say there isn’t a musical out there with a story like it.
Both a good thing and starting to veer into what I didn’t like about the show, the second half of the show is way stronger than the first half. The whole musical is only about 100 minutes but the first half noticeably dragged and the second half noticeably picked up. While I really liked the second half (for the most part), the sudden jump in pacing and tone was kinda jarring.
But really, the whole thing is mostly inconsistent in terms of tone, characterization and songs. Spongebob has a bunch of different styles of music, but there’s a through line throughout that connects them together. Miss You Like Hell doesn’t have that. The characters never really seem to grow or when they do it’s very sudden and out of nowhere before backtracking again. Same with staging, some of it was good and some of it was terrible. Some of the choreography was beautiful and some of it was downright terrible. Some of the lines were beautiful, and some were so cringeworthy it made me uncomfortable. Actually, a lot of the lines were cringeworthy. The whole subplot revolving around Olivia’s blog and the “Castaway Comments” was pretty awful. Also, they were hitting you with those metaphors pretty hard.
The show also tried way too hard to get you to cry, like over-the-top trying to get you to cry, so much that so that I really didn’t (except for a moment with Daphne Rubin-Vega) and felt kinda mad that they were so obviously going for the tears. There’s also way too much going on in the show that has literally nothing to do with the story. There’s like three different subplots that are so cute and so nice but basically pause the story for ten minutes.
For a musical, none of the songs are very “wow” or memorable at all, actually. There’s only one chorus I remember, and that’s only because it’s the word “Yellowstone” repeated like four times. None of the songs really go together and they range from “Okay this is a good song” to “Why is this song still going?” to “This is a bad song why is it here?” Like I said before, I also wish there was some consistency in the music. Also, they desperately needed a drum kit onstage with the rest of the musicians to give the songs a pop.
Unfortunately my least favorite part of this musical was Gizel Jiménez as Olivia, who is arguably the lead of the show. She had a pretty voice but other than that? She’s just... not good in the show. Honestly, and I hate saying it. She just wasn’t good. And I wish she was.
I agree with a lot of what Charles McNulty from the LA Times said during its out of town tryout, though he mentions some characters (all of the “Castaway Friends” with the exception of Pearl) that have been taken out of the show, and honestly I think they would have made it a lot better. Also, I think Krystina Alabado would have been a whole lot better as Olivia, to be honest.

At the end of the day, I liked this musical. I really liked it. I think there’s so much potential for it to be a really great musical and I hope it gets there soon.

“Master of the House,” Fresno Grand Opera, 2014. Timothy Gulan as Thénardier, Shawna M. Hamic as Mme. Thénardier.
An appropriately rollicking rendition. Both Timothy and Shawna might be slightly hammy and do more shouting than the song really needs, but their slimy and brash exuberance is infectious all the same.

Our interview with Shawna Hamic from The Last Ship was smooth sailing! We spoke to her about what it's like originating a role in a world premiere musical and working with Sting. Only 8 performances remain before the show goes to Broadway, so don't miss out! http://bit.ly/LastShip14
