The rogue attempted to trick the green dragon, Venomfang. As a result, Shahaka was immediately killed and sent to, presumably, the Demon Web Pits, where she passed her own Test of Lolth. In order to be resurrected, Lolth demanded something be left behind with her as collateral. Shahaka gave her her heart

From my new Lost Mines of Phandelver Pack which is made to be compatible with my Phandelver and Below: Shattered Obelisk handout pack on Etsy.
My version of the Zhentarim crest. I like to make my own crests since obviously just straight ripping someone else's would be stealing. But also there are a ton of real world crests out there and I think when I use those as inspiration the crests end up looking a lot more medieval-y, which I think is cool

PABSTO (D&D Campaign)
Phandelver and Below the Shattered Obelisk
Today we continue with my youngest daughter's character, introducing:
Ralakor the Celebraterd—Beholder—sexless—40ish years old—8ft—BIG—no hair—many eyes—pink skin
Was hatched nearly 40 years ago, born perfect, too perfect. They emerged from the pocket dimension in which they were trapped. Their visage, frightening their presumed creator. They were left alone in a dark cave with only their wits to keep them alive. They grew strong. They learned many things from the books their wizard father left behind. They became obsessed with what was called a ‘calendar’.
It had many days that were special, eventful and wonderful days. There should be more of these days. As they roamed the underdark they came across a band of goblins being attacked. They heroically (accidentally) shot the animal attacking the goblins with an eyestalk sneeze. The goblins praised them. They quite liked praise, they were their goblins now. Their goblins listened to them and they invited more goblins to bask in their presence and ask for their protection. They provide, as long as the goblins adhere to the holiday traditions (that Ralakor makes up). They soon learn that there is a whole new world outside the underdark, where they celebrate these wonderful holidays. They don’t celebrate Ralakor’s holidays however, but soon they will.

Melarue Velcaryn
Phandelver & Below: The Shattered Obelisk | Baldur's Gate 3
High Elf/Moon Elf | Aberrant Mind Sorcerer | Haunted One
Sorcerous Origin: She was exposed to the Far Realm's warping influences, in the form of a "protective" amulet forged from the shard of a Netherese Obelisk. An alien influence now watches over her and protects her, sometimes against her will. Harrowing Event: She did terrible things to avenge the (supposed) murder of someone she loved. Melarue became a monster, and it haunts her waking dreams. Personality: Naturally curious and adventurous, but can also be flighty and skittish. Slow to trust others, and puts no trust in the divine. Has a soft spot for some creatures that most would deem monstrous or horrifying. Ideal: Fascinated by the arcane and uncovering knowledge. Kills dangerous monsters to make the world a safer place, and 'redeem' her own monstrous nature. Bond: She feels that there's an evil within her that must never be set free. She seeks answers about her lover's disappearance/death. Flaw: Can be a purveyor of doom and gloom, without hope, prone to righteous anger and paranoia. And perhaps just a bit haughty and self-important at times. Horror Trinket: A journal that has been heavily redacted [belonged to her lover, Anita] Mutations: Monstrous mouth on right side of neck, appears as a gnarly scar when closed.
Full Background:
Born just south to The Dales of Cormanthor Forest, Melarue Velcaryn spent much of her upbringing in and around the city of Highmoon with her father Edithas and mother Olshana, who had emigrated from somewhere beyond the Thunder Peaks in search of a place to settle down after a lifetime of wandering together.
Growing up under the roof of two former adventurers while living in a bustling trade hub never failed to entertain, as passing travelers and her parents both would often regale Melarue with stories of their travels. And yet at times it proved to be rather stifling as well, hearing tales of adventure stirred something within her that could not be fulfilled. Having seen both the wonders and the dangers of the world, Edithas and Olshana were prone to being over-protective of their child. In her youth, this led to numerous arguments as well as several rebellious adventures of her own, where she ventured deeper into The Dales and only narrowly avoided scrapes with disaster. One particular encounter with roving bandits in the woods left her severely wounded, but Melarue was thankfully spared from worse by what at the time had appeared to be a freak thunderstorm that had forced her assailants to flee and left her scarred.
Dismayed by this reckless behaviour, her mother finally took Melarue aside and gifted to her an object most precious; a silvery chain necklace with bronze accents, and suspended from it an elegantly carved black pendant with an unearthly slickness to its sheen. According to Melarue’s mother, it was a trinket that Olshana had crafted from a strange gem she’d procured during her travels around the Storm Coast, explaining that it had always kept her safe and it would do the same for Melarue. When she finally declared adulthood, Mel set out from her home to make some memorable adventurous tales of her own.
And indeed, keep her safe the pendant did, for Melarue came to find that those who would aim to do her wrong were often struck by terrible and untimely misfortunes so long as she kept the pendant in her possession. It did not take long for Melarue to realize the truth of the matter however, as it became more and more difficult to wave away these “mere accidents”, when a would-be cutpurse found himself set aflame after trying to rob Melarue of the pendant.
Suddenly she felt acutely aware of the power thrumming within her, an eerily familiar sensation that had escaped her notice until then, as if something that had always lied dormant was now awakened. She found herself drawn by an insatiable curiosity; a desire to know the limits of her own magic. A hunger. She was quick and eager to learn the art of sorcery from that point onwards, and it proved to serve her well on her journeys.
During her travels she fell for a human woman by the name of Anita Katterfeld, a brilliant young adventurer and a clever rogue to boot. They journeyed side-by-side and fought back-to-back for many years, earning a reputation as vigilantes who dealt with corrupt nobles and robbed them accordingly, accruing a sizable fortune together that they had hoped would one day buy their way to a comfortable home in one of the big cities. But it was not to be.
Melarue and Anita found themselves cornered by a band of mercenaries in a small farming village, hired by one of the many powerful Lords that their exploits had crossed. The fight was brief and brutal. When Anita took a crushing blow from a warhammer, Melarue’s rage could not be contained. In all her arcane fury, she decimated the entire band of mercs; burning them, crushing them, and shocking them. It was only afterwards, when the rage had subsided and she felt some dark force pull at her heart, that Melarue realized with terror the sheer destruction that she had wrought. The entire square was left scorched, and the mercenaries who had attacked them were now little more than unrecognizable charred husks in her wake. With Anita nowhere to be found among them, Melarue assumed the worst.
The only signs left of her lover amongst the rubble was the pack she had carried, containing Anita’s journal inside. Many of the entries were now left nearly indecipherable however, as if intentionally scrubbed, save for some mentions of Neverwinter. And so, Melarue fled to the Storm Coast, fearing the darkness that had consumed her heart, hoping that she might discover the significance of Neverwinter to her lover, or at least find a suitable place to lay the last remnants of Anita’s memory to rest. And, perhaps foolishly, Melarue hoped to find her again, alive by some miracle.
Her travels took her north along the Storm Coast, but the incessant thrumming darkness she had intended to flee did not leave her for long, filling Melarue with the sense of it creeping in at the edges of her mind. It was during this time that she took up the art of monster hunting as a form of penance; praying that fighting back against the darkness around her might quell the darkness within her. But alas, the mysterious misfortunes and freak accidents that had once befallen her foes in the past continued to follow her once more, now even afflicting those she would try to help along her way. A tragic twist of fate, that the raw magical power she had once embraced with curiosity and excitement should now leave Melarue with only dread.
Melarue took to camping along the trails and only passing through smaller villages, desperately hoping that she could avoid any more “accidents” by avoiding major settlements as much as possible. It was then that the die of fate was cast against her. She awoke one morning to the noise of battle, and found that a goblin raiding party had surrounded her encampment and were attacking the nearby village. She fought valiantly against them, but their numbers were overwhelming, and in the struggle a stray bolt of lightning caught her in the chest, shattering her black pendant into shards and knocking her out cold.
When she finally awoke, Melarue found that Anita’s pack was missing, and that only a single oily black sliver of her amulet remained. Though greatly weakened by the assault that splintered her foci, Melarue worked tirelessly to pursue the trail the goblins had left behind, pointing her to the small mining village of Phandalin…

Some wips for Shattered Obelisk. Shahaka removed Venomfang’s eye, had it preserved and enchanted to float/follow her so she can use it as a scrying eye. Also Lolth removed her heart in order to resurrect her
