Listen, I like the "Both KTY and Beatrice give huge Kaitlynn Kiramann energy" idea as much as the next person, but I've been thinking about how Vi isn't really Ava coded.

okay so i did watch all of warrior nun in like 2 days bc i have the no longer novel coronavirus and i just. am going CRAZY about the mary/shannon/lilith/beatrice dynamic. absolutely crazy. like the pink + white scene? where mary and lilith each take one of beatrice’s arms and hold her protectively, giving each other the big sister look of solidarity and understanding over her head? lilith tipping her head into beatrice’s cheek? the photograph of the three of them laughing? shannon’s death scene - telling lilith she’s ready, giving mary her medal, closing her eyes when beatrice kisses her on the forehead? the way beatrice describes shannon having loved pranking them? just. the love between all of them in every iteration.
and i just. god i have so many feelings about serious, intense, guarded beatrice - who is so YOUNG compared to the others - first coming into cat’s cradle. and mary sitting down with her at dinner, because beatrice automatically sits alone, her head bent. and the others joining. about weeks going by and them slowly warming her up - mary feels proud whenever she makes her lips twitch, lilith is delighted when beatrice starts to slowly show her sense of humor - they all love cruella de jesus so much (except for shannon, who never says anything but never uses it) not just for the lame joke, but because it was beatrice who made it, their beatrice with a proud grin - and shannon radiates affection when she manages to catch one of them with a good prank and beatrice laughs.
beatrice becoming someone who they come to trust not only to keep a level head and a brilliant, tactical mind, but also to love them - and they see the twisting jagged inwardness of her pain, and mary and shannon make knowing, grim eye contact, lilith - who was in so much of the same pressure cooker of perfection except instead of desperately throwing herself into being useful and having value she has turned to becoming the best, becoming ready, she has things to live up to instead of live down - squeezes her hand - but with them beatrice does not let that pain stop her from caring, loving. they are the easiest part of her vows to keep.
and mary and shannon, and mary and lilith - to see those you love changed by something of another world entirely, pulling them away from you, making them less human - and they keep giving their lives for others, fucking self sacrificial idiots, except you’re all cut from the same cloth, aren’t you? not technically, because you’re not of the cloth, not like them - but you’re alike in that way, all of you are, and it’s such a fucking glorified tragedy that you want to burn the catholic church down for it.
(side note it drives me crazy that they all know exactly which parts of each other to cut into, to make hurt - lilith telling mary she’s not really one of them, that she doesn’t belong, that she only cares about herself; mary telling lilith that all she cares about is her legacy; mary telling beatrice that she cares more about the church than her sisters; probably more that i can’t remember but it’s because they know and love each other so well that they can have this much incisive fury - “she’s my sister, of course i hate her”)
and then camila coming in, the new youngest - and now it’s beatrice’s turn to be the big sister, to camila who has been through so much and still reacts to gentleness like a flower to the sun. and camila comes in at such a hard time, because shannon is retreating, hardening, and it is putting everyone on edge. but camila is a joy and beatrice loves her too, and the rest of them get to see her growth with pride, so much pride.
anyway. my KINGDOM for a world where toya turner got to be in season 2.

Shannon hiccups through a laugh, her hand rising to brush Beatrice's cheek. "Look at you," she mumbles, a fondness in her gaze that makes Beatrice want to crumple... "All grown up. So proud of you, Bea."

Once A Rookie Chapter 23: Ecclesiastes 7:9
Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.
Shannon tries to figure out what is going on with her emotions. Mary calls her out. Beatrice loses some cookies. Lilith is just here trying her best. Shannon gets BIG MAD... again... kinda.
Tumblr media
By the time the debrief finishes Beatrice was essentially catatonic. She’d regurgitated the same thing she’d told Mary, managing to keep her voice from shaking by some miracle. Beatrice found a sort of coldness in the facts to hide behind, it was almost easy that way. It struck her for the first time that maybe Gwen’s instructions on how to report weren’t purely y to keep it “professional” or for protocol– maybe she had been attempting to give a way to make the impossible a little easier for her group of rookies.
Mother Superion nodded along while Beatrice soldered through her account just as she did with each of the other sister warriors. It wasn’t nearly as inquisitive as Beatrice thought it might be with reinforcements needing to be called in, and a fatality occuring. For all of Mother Superion’s rigidity, she accepted what happened and commended the team for handling it as well as they had. It wasn’t praise, but it wasn’t criticism either.
Apparently satisfied with the account of the assignment, Mother Superion excused herself to further coordinate with the group securing the scene. Shannon’s grip on her anger was slipping as she turned away from her team, touching her thumb to each one of her fingers at her side.
This was the part where Shannon should be giving them directions, finalizing any logistics, covering any saved rounds. Yet there she was, still keyed up enough to need to battle her anger before addressing the team, more specifically Beatrice.
Lilith hadn’t seen Shannon like this often. She was intense, at least that was Shannon’s reputation around Cat’s Cradle. Lilith disagreed, she found Shannon to be incredibly professional– put together in a way that was hard to shake. Intensity like hers was something Lilith respected, and attempted to use as her model. Shannon did it without being cold, but aside from her inner circle she knew Shannon was sometimes characterized as closed off.
She had to be. If Lilith had learned anything from her upbringing, her grooming , it was that responsibility like Shannon’s, like hers, carried a weight that was not only hard to share, but shouldn’t be shared. Not outside of the most inner parts of an inner circle.
She hadn’t seen Shannon struggle with it like this. Not for something that didn’t seem, well, large enough an offense to warnent it. Shannon’s anger in the past had been exacting and well placed. She was also the first to be there for sisters when an assignment had gone wrong in a very real, very graphic, very hard, way– the way Lilith knew it had gone for Beatrice.
Shannon, somehow, was always above the needing someone– at least to the rest of the order. Shannon went to Mary, or– more accurately– Mary went to her and Mary-ed it out of her.
Yet, here she stood. So roughly contained.
It was hard enough to look at, harder than it was to look at Beatrice as she battled with everything she’d seen, and Lilith decided she’d rather settle for watching Mary watch Shannon than look at either Shannon or Beatrice directly. The other woman knew her best after all, and if Mary was concerned then there was a real cause for worry.
Apparently there was.
Because Mary had shifted her attention from Shannon, and deliberately sought out Lilith. Silently, with nothing more than a quick glance at Beatrice, and tilt of her head toward the door, Mary was telling Lilith, and the kid: get lost.
Beatrice had yet to look away from the corner of the white board. She’d been somehow quieter than normal for the entirety of the debrief. And now, with the distant glassy quality to her eyes, Lilith knew she’d fallin into the trap of playing out the horrors of the mission like a movie– Lilith had done the same. She was even wiping at blood that no longer colored her hands.
Maybe the ‘ get lost,’ was less that and more ‘ get her out of here.’
Lilith looked back to Mary with a nod as she took Beatrice by the elbow first, then shifted her hand to the small of the younger girl’s back as she guided her from the room.
“But–”
Lilith shook her head again, this time at Beatrice– Once. Quick and decisive as she pushed the door open and sent Beatrice through it before she followed immediately after. Their roles had been somewhat assumed before they even left, but they were made very clear in the moment of understanding she so rarely had with Mary: Lilith would show Beatrice how to return everything and keep her busy while Mary dealt with Shannon.
As the door closed behind the younger two Mary felt herself letting out a breath of relief. Until the noise of the door jarred Shannon into turning around, searching for the younger members of her team only to find they weren’t there.
Mary shifted to place herself further between Shannon and the door. “I told Lilith to take her.”
“What– Mary.” Shannon was almost growling, her hand paused the tapping to swing wildly at the door motioning after Lilith and Beatrice, “Get them back in here, we have stuff to go over.”
“No.” Mary pouted her lip a bit as she shook her head, defiant as always. It was a decision to go toe to toe with Shannon in her aggression, but it was the only thing she could think to do at the moment to get her to listen. Clearly her suppression wasn’t working. Maybe getting it to boil over would do the trick. “We don’t.”
Shannon huffed as she turned, her hands found her hips as she started pacing. Mary wasn’t sure if the lack of rebuttal was because she knew Mary was right or if she didn’t have a response at all.
Shannon shifted as paced. Her hands alternated every few steps from resting on her hips and clenching at fists at her side. Occasionally they would even wipe aggressively at her face.
So it continued. Hips. Face. Sides. Back of her neck.  Like she couldn’t figure out what her hands wanted to do.
It was restless. Almost caged.
And it was nearly as maddening to watch as Mary was sure it felt. Yet, Mary let it go on until Shannon’s coif was thrown in an angry heap to the conference table with a vocalization that was somewhere between a muffled yell and a frustrated groan.
"You need to get your shit together."
"Language." It was a half assed scold at best. Mary was pretty sure Shannon didn’t do it consciously anymore. Certainly not this time because her injection hadn’t so much as caused a hitch in Shannon’s pacing.

@inlovewithfairies — thank you for the prompt!
“They’re doing it again.”
Mary doesn’t look up from her gun. “I’m not looking,” she says, rubbing oil along the barrel. It glints in the sunlight, but still. Not clean enough.
“It’s almost like…” Mary doesn’t have to look to know that Shannon is gesturing, creating a picture with her hands. “A dog looking at its reflection.”
Mary scoffs, keeps cleaning her gun. “Yeah?”
“No matter what you do, the dog will never understand what it’s seeing,” Shannon explains, “because it doesn’t have the capacity for logical thought.”
“Elaborate.”
“Beatrice has been trying to teach her the same basic move—one I know for a fact that Ava knows—for an hour, and—you know, some of this feels too intimate to describe.”
“Exactly why I’m not looking.”
Shannon hums. “Should I avert my eyes?”
“You should be cataloguing every single moment of this. For blackmail.”
“For blackmail,” Shannon says, her words overlapping Mary’s. “Of course.”
The gun is clean enough. Mary looks up at a much more pleasant picture than whatever is happening in the courtyard—Shannon. “You remember when we were like that?”
Shannon looks at her, raises an eyebrow. “Oh? You mean when I used to walk into your room after training with my shirt off and you would sit in the corner and stare out the window—“
“No. No, that is… that’s—you’re lying. That’s not what happened.” It’s exactly what happened, but Mary would rather hop off the roof they’re sitting on and break both her legs than admit it. “It was different.”
“Mm. Completely different,” Shannon says with that smirk. “I was the one that got fed up and dragged you into that closet—”
“Asshole.”
“Language.”
Finally, Mary looks across the courtyard. They’re working with quarterstaffs, up close and personal. Beatrice demonstrates quite literally the first move new recruits learn with the weapons, patient as ever. The move puts them inches from each other, and Ava fucks it up in a way that almost has them knocking their heads together.
If Mary looks any longer she’s going to throw up.
“It’s just…” Shannon begins, “An extraordinary amount of time for them to reset.”
“Are you going to watch them eye-fuck all day, or…?”
“There’s a lot more involved than just eyes—“
Mary stands up, holstering her shotguns. “I have had enough. No. I’ve had way too much.”
A turn of events. Ava catches wind of her audience before Beatrice does.
“Hey!” Ava calls, waving, oblivious. “We’re training!”
Beatrice goes rigid, like they can only see her if she’s moving.
“I’ll bet twenty they do this for another week,” Shannon says through a smile, waving right back.
“I’ll take that.”
Mary knows the voice anywhere.
“Only twenty, Suzanne?” Shannon goads, “You can do better than that.”
“Fifty,” Suzanne offers, sidling up on Mary’s other side. “A month or more.”
“Deal,” Shannon says, “I don’t think they’ll last that long.” She nudges Mary’s leg. “We didn’t.”
“You two have more sense,” Suzanne says, and she’s right. “Though not by much.”
“You know you’re on the edge of a roof, right?” Mary warns.
Suzanne smirks, looking out as Beatrice packs their things up in a hurry, hustling Ava along.
“The point remains.” She turns to leave. “I’ll be back for my money. With interest.”
~
Suzanne wins one hundred euros, three months later.
She tells Shannon that she’d found them in a storage closet, and Shannon laughs until she cries as she empties her wallet.
Mary thinks that maybe they aren’t so different. It’s a thought she’ll take to the grave.
