So we have the comparison of Cass to a mouse. Then, later in the book:
Tumblr media
Cass sees a mouse and immediately tries to squash it. In context, Cass is bad for not killing the mouse. It’s such an effective way to show us right off the bat what Cass may not realize herself at this point (she’s teens, pre-Batgirl)—guilt weighs on her.

I know it’s been said before but augh Shadow of the Batgirl is so good. it's one of the few Cass stories that gives her a community with other Asian people and I really appreciate that a lot. it felt like a thoughtful take on Cass for a lighter hearted story in a different continuity

I desperately want a story where one of the everyday people Cass has been there for over the years as Batgirl turns back up and gets to tell her how much it meant to them. She really needs to be reminded that for however much it feels to her like no matter how hard she fights she's never enough, for a lot of people out there her kindness made all the difference in the world. She deserves that much. Maybe that's why this always gets to me

Blue Beetle (2006)
Just a good introduction to a character with a satisfying conclusion. I love you, Jaime, a guy who's just trying to do his best for his loved ones and his local community. I love you Khaji Da, scrungly lil dude speaking in glyphs. I love you, Brenda, and your complicated relationship with your aunt who adores you, but is also a crime lord. I love you Paco, a genuinely good friend. I love Jaime's family and the way they all adjust to Jaime being a superhero. I love the effort made to portray Jaime as a person with community and connections. i looove jaime sososo much he's such a fun protagonist and the developement of his character + his relationship w khaji da is sooo interesting and well written. i love seeing him bond with his little alien bug parasite !! all of the side characters are also so great like brenda and paco are so fun and la dama is suuuch an interesting character. jaime's family is also so lovely they clearly care abt jaime so much and its nice to see a kid superhero with parents who respect and also deeply care abt their kid. the art is also very fun overall its just a really stellar run Quite honestly one of the best written comic runs I've ever read, DC or otherwise. It flips so many standard comic book tropes on their heads and does it well. The main character is the epitome of just some guy and he is my favorite of all time. AMAZING characters. Fresh perspectives on comics tropes that are so overused it's hard to imagine comics without them. Everyone is worthy of respect and treated with dignity, even the villains. Khaji Da's character arc is amazing. And the adults make me laugh so much. Guy and Peacemaker as mentors who IMMEDIATELY recognize this kid is FAR more emotionally mature then they are, so they're not going to bother with that side of mentoring!

Once again, got me heavily relating to a character with language/communication issues. The only qualm I had with how the graphic novel showed Cassandra struggling with language was how she'd go 'sorry, hi. always gonna get that wrong,' referring to the order of things. Instead, blurting out whatever she needed to tell them. Which to me, has never been that much of a social faux pas. Granted, with a character like Cassandra, that would be an important distinction to learn.
I guess it just felt very much akin to bilingual characters written by monoligual authors going 'bonjour--oh, sorry, hello.' On the opposite end of the spectrum, I did like the moments where Cassandra gets overwhelmed by Barbara's pinging questions to the point she just yells 'stop!'
Also, I really like Barbara being in a wheelchair. Cause yea, she can definitely still play a part in all the heroics stuff even with being disabled, 100%. The sequel to this one which seems to be more of a prequel, I think shows the accident that has her end up in said wheelchair. But Barbara, from what I've seen has never been the tank type character to begin with. Always been more the brainiac sort, rather a support type. But supports are needed just as much as tanks are.

Do you want to read a Graphic Novel about Cassandra becoming Batgirl? Read this.
Cassandra's story was always going to be a hard one for them to adapt into these Graphic Novels because so much of her story is based around a lot of DC characters including some slightly more obscure ones. As such it feels a bit unfair for me to criticize it too much for the changes they made to her character because so much of her character is tied up to all that lore that surrounds her.
And, like with the others, it feels hard to comment on because I'm not the target audience for this.
But even with all those caveats I wish they had connected this story closer to the DC universe a bit more than by including Barbara into it. Even just little Easter Eggs would have been great.
The story itself is fine for the audience it is aiming for. It's well enough paced and isn't a bad finding-yourself story. I just wished they had done a little bit more with the characters and world they had access to.
Should you read it? Much like with the others if you have a teenager who is interested in comics it might be worth passing their way but if you are already into comics I wouldn't suggest it even if you do like Cass as a character.

I want the 'What If?' version of Shadow of the Batgirl where Barbara doesn't conveniently say the trigger word in this moment and Cass totally debones this poor kid.

JLA (1997) #68-85
So, this one is way underread and likely unknown to many people, but it is my favorite DC Comic of all time. It features the classic 2000's ""Big 7"" line-up, with Kyle as GL and Wally as the Flash. There's also backup JLA with some awesome characters as well (Nightwing, Green Arrow, Zatanna, Faith) AND an ancient JLA with some fascinating characters based on myth and legend. The adventure feels like a JLA adventure. Something you could only do with comics. It's big and wild and existential. There's time travel and wacky uses of powers and mythology come to life and magic and premonitions and sacrifices for the greater good. AND (spoilers) the whole thing is solved with an incredible time-travel paradox. Despite all of that chaos, everything is done really intentionally, with touches of intimacy and questions about morality and humanity and fate. The characterization is perfect: humorous and touching. Plus Doug Mahnke art!
