Writing in Ancient Egypt
Writing in ancient Egypt developed sometime prior to the Early Dynastic Period (c. 3150-2613 BCE) and came to be recognized as a gift of the god Thoth who empowered humanity through the written word. Writing preserved memory, honored the gods, and allowed for long-distance communication with others, including the souls of the dead in the afterlife.
This collection includes a brief survey of the subject as well as some primary sources on how the ancient Egyptians viewed writing and the two deities – Thoth and Seshat – most closely associated with the craft.

Finished commission of the Goddess Seshat
I had SO much fun with this piece as I've never digitally painted a panther before. I loved doing the subtle spots and different colors hidden in the black

Djehuty guides my pen
He who has inspired scribes for millennia I praise you!
Your words are perfect, they reflect ma'at
The Ennead is made glad by your writings
Seshat your beloved stands by your side
She smiles as your pen touches papyrus
Great lady of the library, I sing your praises!
You who records all knowledge
Nothing is forgotten under your careful eye
I would be lost without you
Dua twin scribes!
May my art honor you.

Seshat, Goddess of Sciences, is the younger sister of Thoth and the inventor of the writing system. She is a devoted hard-worker who likes to help her older brother around and spend her time with her family. She is credited to have built Thoth's Library in order to let him have a place where he could store his infinite knowledge, so that everyone, including her, could benefit from it. She seems to be a perfectionist, a trait that makes her one of the most reliable goddesses of Ra's Solar Court. Ironically, her brother doesn't seem to be as respected as her within the court, but she always makes sure to support her beloved brother with all of her being!

Mummy Mask
flickr
Beautiful shot of the mummy mask of an unnamed lady. Colourful gods parade across the yellow mask, bringing offerings: on this, the left side, we have Seshat, Hathor (wearing an elaborate headdress with a vulture wearing the red crown), Tefnut, and Anubis wearing the double crown.
(This is the same as this.)
When: Roman Egypt
Where: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Thoth: *talking a lot, about more than 5 things at the same time*...and this is why I believe I can take a fight with a T-rex, but Horus need terapy anyway and I don't want to go to Seshat's meeting this week
Ma'at, with heart eyes but trying not to show it: I totally agree
