Rationale for Inclusion:
My partner and I are not just science fiction nerds, we're also space race history nerds. Part of the interest in watching any Soviet produced sci-fi films is better understanding the cultural context for the later real life firsts associated with Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin. As we moved into the 1950s section of the survey, we frequently found ourselves asking, "Had Sputnik happened yet?" and that milestone will no doubt be invoked when I get to that decade of films.
The other reason Cosmic Voyage [AKA The Space Voyage] (Космический рейс, Dir. Vasili Zhuravlov, 1936, USSR) was of interest when I ran across it during my titles roundup for this survey was that it is a silent film.
If you've been paying attention to this series, then you may recall that the last silent film discussed was Woman in the Moon (Frau im Mond, Dir. Fritz Lang, 1929, Germany). Histories of the Hollywood film industry have the silent film era ending in 1929, with some notable exceptions, mainly made by Charles Chaplin. In other countries their silent eras lasted longer due to the complications and expense of technical conversion and/or artists who accompanied the films not wanting to give up their jobs. In Japan, for example, silent films continued to be produced until 1939 due to katsudō benshi narrators being an essential component of the country's filmgoing experience. 
In Soviet Russia, their film industry began converting to sound around 1930 and had essentially stopped producing silent films by 1935. Cosmic Voyage is an outlier largely due to its prolonged production, which began in 1932 amid the overlap of formats. The creation of futuristic sets, special effects to create the illusion of space travel, and stop motion animation sequences took awhile to create and combine in the analog era.
Once Cosmic Voyage finally was completed, it only had a brief theatrical run in 1936. In the middle of its four year production, the Soviet leadership had declared in 1934 that a doctrine of socialist realism would govern the written and visual arts throughout the Soviet Union. Having the goal "to depict reality in its revolutionary development," the censors found Cosmic Voyage with its use of special effects to be too fanciful for widespread public consumption. If they knew that pioneering rocket scientist Konstantin Tsiolkovsky had been a consultant on the screenplay, it may not have factored into the censor's decision process.
Amid cultural shifts in the 1980s, Cosmic Voyage began making the rounds at international film festivals and gradually came to film nerd consciousness.
Reactions:
Like The Woman in the Moon before it, watching Cosmic Voyage comes with the joy of how many things the filmmakers got right about spaceflight and microgravity. It also has the same narrative structure and concerns that would be oft repeated in the 1950s films about experimental space flights.
As a late silent film, unencumbered by early sound technology, the cinematography is quite wonderful, and shows off the amazing set pieces. We were particularly amused by the fact that the spaceship is effectively shot out of a rail gun. I like the symmetry of the first space flight silent film that we watched, A Trip to the Moon (Le voyage dans la lune, Dir. Georges Méliès, 1902, France), and the last one using the same means of launching their spacecraft.
Overall, Cosmic Voyage is a nice piece of cinema that straddles where spaceflight movies had been thus far, and what they would evolve into.

It is I, Andy Wheyface, logging in to give you my insights into the most spectacular television program - a little show called DUCKTALES, starring my fellow billionaire, Scrooge McDuck! (And his nephews, who I presume are locked in perpetual battle with each other to secure his affections and inherit his vast riches!)
To celebrate Arden's Indiegogo campaign for our third season hitting another big milestone, I've just watched the DuckTales theme song sequence. And I must say, my mind is positively RACING from these intriguing (and highly realistic) sights and sounds.

For starters, look at this! A WAVE of MONEY? Genius! Naturally I also have an unimaginable quantity of golden coins in a big vault such as this one (more on that later) - but I never considered installing a wave machine capable of creating a monstrous, crashing tsunami of gold that will rain down upon my body and sweep me up in its unstoppable path... until NOW!

Next, consider this helicopter. I know what you're thinking - "Andy, you're an eccentric billionaire! Surely you're not impressed by a helicopter, of which you must own several!" How well you know me!
But what I don't own... is a helicopter piloted BY a DUCK! But of course, it makes perfect sense - ducks are masters of the skies already, flying as they do upon their majestic wings. So naturally they'd make excellent pilots.

And now, I can hear you saying, "Andy, if you're building a powerful duck army in New York City, a legion of ducks stronger than anything this world has ever seen before, perhaps you should provide them with helicopters," and let me assure you: plans ARE already in motion. But I thank you for the suggestion just the same!

Now what exactly is happening here? It's unclear, but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that Scrooge McDuck is walking through some sort of rejuvenating energy field that will make him feel younger in mind, body, and spirit. Based on this image alone, I can promise you that my duck army WILL be equipped with state-of-the-art rejuvenating energy fields, as I've gathered that they must be extremely important to ducks of some prominence!

Ahh, now this view will look familiar to all of you - we all have a spiral staircase leading down to our money vaults, do we not? I certainly do!

And THIS view will look familiar to those of you who have been hospitalized for trying to dive into an enormous custom-built vault full to the brim with golden coins, as inspired by Scrooge McDuck himself!
I am, OF COURSE, talking about ME, Andy Wheyface! As it turns out, slamming into a mound of solid gold at a high velocity is not nearly as comfortable as you'd think!

Good People, this particular screencap sent a chill down my spine, so much did it remind me of when another type of vicious underwater beast (sea lions) attacked my underwater casino - an event that is still having unexpected consequences upon the duck community to this day!

And such occurrences remind us of the fragility of life, of the constant danger lurking around every corner, of the need to ARM ducks against threats of all kinds. Which is why I've already commissioned robot duck suits just like this one, so MY ducks will not have to live in fear! I told you this title sequences was full up to the brim with inspiration! I have no idea what's happening here, but I DO know with every fiber of my being that it's a SPECTACULAR idea!

Now, this moment made me pause, so deep in contemplation as I was. When they soar above the clouds, flapping their wings mightily as the wind carries them across the heavens like a starlit highway... do ducks dream of going to space? Do they have ambitions of seeing the Earth from above?
Would that we could ask them such lofty queries....
Anyway, I've now commissioned a tiny rocket to carry ducks to space, so I suppose we'll find out soon enough!

Another interesting thought here - ducks accessing GENIE technology! What would a duck wish for, had it access to all the powers and mysteries of the universe? Wealth? Power? An unlimited supply of pretzels? ALL OF THE ABOVE?
YES!!!

How the Woolly Mammoth Could Prevent Trillions in Economic Losses? - by Divya Bharadwaj | Inc. - Your Next Move | 24th/01/2025
Colossal Biosciences isn’t bringing the woolly mammoth back just for fun. We need it.
More than one million species are threatened with extinction, according to the United Nations. “Right now, it’s causing ecological effects,” says Ben Lamm, CEO and co-founder of Colossal Biosciences. “But tomorrow it’ll be causing economic effects.”
Perhaps known best for its efforts to bring back the woolly mammoth, Dallas-based Colossal’s core mission is preserving biodiversity—the variety of life in ecosystems. And biodiversity isn’t just important to conservationists—economists are also concerned.
The World Economic Forum estimates that “half of global GDP—$44 trillion—is dependent on nature to some extent,” and predicts that biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse could cause a decline in global GDP of $2.7 trillion annually by 2030.
Luckily, Colossal is working on the problem.
Colossal’s scientists, based in Boston, Dallas, and Melbourne, Australia, have made recent strides toward bringing back the woolly mammoth, Tasmanian tiger, and dodo bird, assembling the most comprehensive genomes to date for each of the extinct species and making breakthroughs in bridging the gap between DNA sequences and live organisms.
“We’ve had some pretty big milestones and had a lot of scientific firsts as well as technology innovations, which has driven us to be able to raise the amount of capital that we’ve raised and has then continued to bolster investor interest,” Lamm says. The Inc. Best in Business 2024 honoree just raised $200 million in Series C funding from TWG Global, Colossal announced in a January 15 press release, bringing the total raised since its 2021 launch to $435 million. With that comes a new valuation of $10.2 billion, making Dallas-based Colossal Texas’s first ever decacorn (a unicorn worth at least $10 billion).
Colossal’s recent funding will be used to expand laboratories and continue to make advances in computational biology, cellular engineering, genetic engineering embryology, and animal husbandry, which will contribute not only to the de-extinction projects but also to species preservation and human health care.
The relation between biodiversity & the economy
Biodiversity in ecosystems is essential for food security, drinkable water, medicine, climate stability—and economic growth. A November 2024 study found that exposure to biodiversity risk was associated with a 3.2 percent decrease in ROA, on average, and research published this month observed that firms with greater exposure to biodiversity risk “may be compelled to maintain substantial capital reserves to ensure operational continuity,” which could undercut firm efficiency.
And what is biodiversity risk, exactly? The World Wildlife Fund outlines three components of biodiversity risk to businesses:
Physical risk, including raw material shortages and loss of ecosystem services. Regulatory risk, which represents the costs associated with either operating in a poorly regulated environment or being unprepared to comply with regulation. Reputational risk, or loss of brand value if a company is perceived to act with disregard to the ecosystem. A key way to guard against biodiversity risk—de-extinction and conservation of vulnerable species to restore balance to the ecosystem—is exactly what Colossal is working on.
“A lot of people are talking about carbon sequestration and methane suppression, which is fantastic, but not enough people are talking about the biodiversity loss and its impacts to the world,” Lamm says.
So what does the woolly mammoth have to do with it?
Back to the elephant—or rather, mammoth—in the room. What does resurrecting a giant herbivore do for biodiversity?
Well, the arctic permafrost is currently thawing and projected to release between 119.3 and 251.6 billion tons of carbon by 2100, a November study found. But as Lamm explained on Inc.’s What I Know podcast in 2022, research shows that expanding the population of large herbivores like the mammoth would increase snow density and reduce the ground surface temperature, thus protecting the permafrost.
That’s why Colossal is on track to produce the first mammoths for rewilding by 2028. What About the Dodo Bird?
Colossal’s de-extinction efforts are also helping existing species. Colossal’s research is helping combat elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, which can cause a hemorrhagic disease that is the single largest cause of death in young elephants in North America, Europe, and Thailand, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. In collaboration with the Baylor College of Medicine, Colossal provided research support and funding for a vaccine that is being tested in elephants at the Houston Zoo.
“If we are able to cure, or at least prevent, EEHV across the three major strains, it could save more elephants than all of elephant conservation combined for the past 50 years,” Lamm says.
Work on dodo bird de-extinction, meanwhile, is informing mechanisms to preserve threatened bird species, and progress on the Tasmanian tiger project has helped pioneer technology that may make its relative, the endangered northern quoll, resistant to cane toad poison—one of its main causes of death. The Australian government classifies the cane toad as an invasive species. If northern quolls are able to eat cane toads, Lamm explains, it will both boost their population and help reduce the cane toad’s harmful impacts on the environment.
What’s Next?
Cultivating primordial germ cells for the dodo bird, making edits to further refine the Tasmanian tiger’s genome, and fine-tuning follicle design to grow mammoth hair are among Lamm’s goals for Q1.
Meanwhile, Colossal’s artificial womb technology—the company is on track to grow the first animal fully ex-utero by 2026—could be particularly impactful for saving vulnerable species.
“Imagine a world where we are growing 100 northern white rhinos fully ex-utero in the lab and then working with rewilding partners to put them back into their environment,” Lamm says. “I think that I could change the game, because then for conservation, you won’t have a need for surrogacy.”
As Colossal makes progress toward reviving extinct mammals and birds, it also supports the conservation of similar endangered species through its nonprofit arm, the Colossal Foundation, which it launched in October 2024. So far, it has 48 partners, including Re:wild, Save the Elephants, and Biorescue.
“We have to figure out as a global society how we work and live one-on-one with nature,” says Lamm.
It’s a mammoth problem, but someone has to tackle it.
