Beware of Fraud Builder || Price Manipulation in Real Estate || background check of Builder |
From a preferred retirement abode in the 1980s to a vibrant city populated by students and IT professionals, Pune is often a favoured residential destination. The 2018 ease of living index, compiled by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, ranked it as the most livable city in India.
Yet, all is not well. Over the last few years, a “builder mafia” has sprouted in Pune. According to realty market experts and the police, builders cheat thousands of people in the city every year. Out of 11,000 complaints filed with Pune's district consumer Court, 4,453 are against builders, according to officials at the Pune Consumer Forum. On average, about 32 percent of complaints in the consumer court are related to housing.
The police are often reluctant to file cases against big builders, and the media, which depends on these companies for advertisements, holds back as well.
One of the largest housing frauds in recent times involved DS Kulkarni. The DSK Group, one of Pune’s most prestigious builders, is accused of cheating 33,000 investors and depositors of over Rs 2,000 crore. Kulkarni is currently in jail, but depositors still haven’t received their money.
Buying a house in Pune is no longer easy. For some, it’s a nightmare.
***
In 2016, a complaint against 30 Pune builders was submitted to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other ministers, alleging that around 15,000 flat owners across 41 housing projects had been cheated. The complaint was submitted by a consumer rights forum called Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, which said it was approaching the chief minister directly because the police were not taking action against the builders, despite registering FIRs against them.
Vijay Sagar, president of the ABGP, said the flat buyers had been “duped” by the builders. They weren’t given possession of the flats even after paying the required deposits. “The flat buyer made complaints, in their individual capacities, against the builders in 2012 or so,” Sagar said. “Police complaints were registered against many of them but no action was taken. These flat buyers helplessly made rounds of police stations.”
The 30 builders include big names and small such as KUL Kumar Builders, Trishul Builders, Jalan Maple Shelter Group, Parmar Indus Associates, Bhujbal Brothers Construction Company, Kolte Patil, Mittal Brothers, Vijay Laxmi Developers. Newslaundry has a copy of the list of the 41 projects mentioned in the complaint.
After receiving the complaint, Fadnavis directed Praveen Dixit, Pune's police chief, to take action against the builders. “But nothing happened,” Sagar said.
A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Kirit Somaiyya, got involved. He wrote to the anti-corruption department, the police chief, and the joint director of the Enforcement Directorate. Again, no action was taken.
Sagar said the builders defraud their customers in multiple ways. They do not hand over possession of the flats, reduce the total area, overcharge for electric meters and such. “Sometimes they charge Rs 75,000 for installing an electric meter, which actually costs Rs 6,000-7,000,” he said.
According to Sagar, many builders are hand-in-glove with the “water mafia”. “While sanctioning the building plan, the city corporation asks the developer or builder to submit an affidavit if there’s water shortage in the area,” he explained. “The affidavit says it is the builder's responsibility to provide water and the prospective buyers should not ask the corporation to supply water. But the affidavits aren’t shown to buyers.”

Asian American diplomats say discrimination holds them back as US competes with China US Rep. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat and former diplomat, had top-secret security clearance as a State Department adviser to Gen. David Petraeus in Afghanistan but was banned from working in or even on issues pertaining to Korea. “It felt like a very clear signal from the government and my workplace that they didn’t trust me fully,” the Boston-born Kim told CNN. It was, he said, “a painful and hurtful experience.” Michael Young, who calls himself a San Francisco “Chinatown boy,” spent 10 years serving as a US diplomat and, concurrently, in the Army Reserve. During that time, the State Department denied him assignments in China twice. “The second time I got denied, I appealed, and I appealed, and I appealed. It didn’t go anywhere,” he said. “At that point, I’d had enough.” He quit. Asian American diplomats say that as they try to serve their country, they face disproportionate hurdles in the form of extremely drawn-out security clearance waits, restrictions on where they can serve — sometimes based on incorrect information — and a flawed appeals process. Their efforts to change the system have had limited success, but their concerns are gaining traction as the US focuses more intently on the strategic importance of Asia, great power competition with China and North Korea’s nuclear threat. Democrats and Republicans, concerned about the potential loss of cultural and linguistic knowledge that could give the US an edge in global competition, have written legislation to address some of the issues. Asian American and Pacific Islander national security professionals are pressing the case that Chinese Americans in particular are the US’ greatest asset in understanding and countering Beijing’s economic, political and military aggression. In response to diplomats’ concerns, the Trump administration launched a task force to study assignment restrictions just before it left office. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who has begun an ambitious effort to improve diversity and racial equity at the department, picked up the issue and is expected to make an announcement about it in the coming months. “I am very concerned about these reports,” Blinken told lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in March. “I’ve spoken to Asian American colleagues in the department about them and, suffice to say, this is something that I’m looking into.” Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California told the secretary that assignment restrictions “not only affect an employee’s ability to get promoted to senior leadership, it also affects recruiting and retention. It deprives the United States potentially of cultural and language expertise, and it sends the false message that people who look like me happen to be more disloyal.” While this challenge is decades old, more than 20 current and former AAPI national security professionals who spoke to CNN said they have a strong sense that things have gotten worse in the past few years because, as one Washington-based diplomat said, of “bipartisan and especially Republican fear-mongering about China trying to infiltrate all aspects of society.” Data validates their sense of things. The State Department declined to answer questions, provide comment or share statistics about assignment restrictions, but CNN obtained a sensitive-but-unclassified 2018 letter to House lawmakers that said restrictions had affected 166 employees in 2015 and 168 in 2016. In 2017, that number nearly doubled to 307. When lawmakers asked for an explanation of the stark jump, the Trump administration never responded, a Capitol Hill aide said. Diplomats told CNN they have heard anecdotally that colleagues of Russian or Eastern European descent and some colleagues married to Israeli citizens may also have been restricted from certain assignments. But current and former diplomats, lawmakers and others say Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders appear to be more impacted than any other group. ‘Targeted’ In an open letter published in March, AAPI national security professionals wrote that “the xenophobia that is spreading as U.S. policy concentrates on great power competition has exacerbated suspicions, microaggressions, discrimination, and blatant accusations of disloyalty simply because of the way we look. Many of us have been targeted because we are either ethnically Chinese or simply look Asian.” “This is not to dismiss credible counterintelligence concerns as evidenced through indictments of US citizens — some of whom are White — spying for China. Treating all Asian-Americans working in national security with a broad stroke of suspicion, rather than seeing us as valuable contributors, is counterproductive to the greater mission of securing the homeland,” the signatories said. AAPI diplomats speak of the stress, anxiety and pain the restrictions cause, particularly at a time of amplified anti-Asian hate. A 2020 survey by the State Department’s Asian American Foreign Affairs Association found 70% of respondents believed the assignment restriction process was biased, and 41% believed there were outright errors in the process One diplomat with an assignment restriction found their Diplomatic Security file said they were seeking citizenship in that country. That was “unequivocally false,” this person said. Security officials had not even asked them about it. Another diplomat was restricted from serving in China because the department said she had multiple immediate family members in the country. She has none, she said, and never has. The core issue, Rep. Kim told CNN, revolves around some of America’s oldest questions: “What does it mean to be an American, and whether or not they’re forever going to see people of color, and especially of AAPI descent, as fully American.” “I was always told diversity is our strength and that’s what we want to push forward to the world, but it doesn’t feel that way from my experience,” Kim continued. “Instead, we come at it from a place where my diversity is a threat or potential threat first, and only when that is as clearly resolved as it can be, then it can be seen as an asset.” The current and former diplomats who spoke to CNN, some of whom asked to be anonymous in order to speak frankly, mentioned the fear of speaking out about assignment restrictions and how discussion often gets shut down because the restrictions are framed as a national security issue. “All of us who are currently employed fear there could be deleterious impacts on our security clearances because we’re pushing back,” one said. Losing your security clearance makes it almost impossible to work as a diplomat. But many described this moment as a civil rights awakening for Asian Americans. ‘Where are you really from?’ “We’re starting to wake up and think, wait a minute, should we be putting up with this anymore, this ‘Where are you really from?’ attitude,” a diplomat serving overseas said. “We’re Americans.” Assignment restrictions are largely handled by the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, the security and law enforcement branch of the State Department, which is overseen by a political appointee who is often a security professional, sometimes a longtime “DS” officer, who reports to the department’s undersecretary for management. The State Department’s Foreign Affairs Manual says it applies assignment restrictions “to prevent potential targeting and harassment by foreign intelligence services as well as to lessen foreign influence and/or foreign preference security concerns,” for instance, if an employee or close family members maintain dual citizenship with that country or have substantial financial interests or foreign contacts there. Assignment restrictions can be put in place when initial security clearance determinations are made, before a staffer begins work at the department, during reinvestigations or when a diplomat’s personal life changes because of marriage or other circumstances. They can also be applied weeks before someone is meant to start a job. Restrictions can also apply to jobs focused on a particular country because they “may present vulnerabilities for targeting when there is frequent official contact with foreign individuals.” Temporary assignments in that country cannot last longer than 60 days in any 365-day period. Carol Perez, the director general of the foreign service who oversees personnel issues told a House committee in September that the restrictions aren’t “necessarily that you were born in a country or you have some sort of affiliation, the question is for countries in which there are critical intelligence threats … what are the family connections that you might have that would make you susceptible to some sort of foreign influence.” But Rep. Kim’s experience of being barred from working on or in Korea — assignments he never sought — and the experiences of current and former diplomats CNN spoke with demonstrate that critical intelligence threats aren’t always a factor. Restrictions are applied against diplomats going to close US allies, such as Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Yuki Kondo-Shah, the California-born daughter of a Japanese American mother, was selected for a position at the US consulate in Fukuoka, Japan, in November 2016. Six weeks before she was to start there in July 2018 — with plane tickets in hand and moving arrangements settled — Diplomatic Security emailed to say she couldn’t be posted there. She was one of several diplomats who recounted the struggle of having jobs yanked at the last minute and recalls the emotionally draining experience of lodging an appeal, including the financial challenge of hiring a lawyer. Kondo-Shah’s file noted that her mother was Japanese, that she had family and friends in Japan, that she had volunteered to help with tsunami relief there. It also said, incorrectly, that she had Japanese citizenship. She appealed and, in a shock to many of her colleagues, won. She flew to Japan weeks later. Diplomats noted other inconsistencies in the way the policy is applied, including that colleagues who are married to Chinese, Japanese and Korean citizens — the definition of a “close family member” — still serve in those countries. Apart from the assignment restrictions, AAPI diplomats sometimes wait so long for security clearances that they lose job opportunities and internships, while non-Asian peers appear to get approvals within months. The net result, diplomats and their advocates say, is a steady erosion of morale and opportunity at the personal level, and a loss for the institution and US national security. Many diplomats told CNN they considered leaving the department; several did. ‘I wanted to serve’ One former diplomat spoke of losing an internship and a department scholarship because her security clearance took almost three years to come through. She watched fellow students get clearances within months and was particularly struck when a peer with an eerily similar background — another American who had gone to a top university, also had studied in China, also had family there — got a clearance in six months. The former diplomat said she and colleagues saw one major difference with this peer: “Their name and their face are not as Chinese sounding as mine.” Her observation echoes one other AAPI diplomats have made: Chinese American diplomats who took Western-sounding surnames on marriage went on to serve in China despite having immediate family there. One diplomat, discussing the hurdles AAPI diplomats face getting clearances, joked bitterly that “it helps immensely to change one’s last name.” The former diplomat said she had quit because the department “just made me feel so small. … I wanted to give back to my country, I wanted to serve, I wanted to be an asset, but the entire time I was seen as a threat and made to feel that I didn’t belong, and that was hurtful.” And there is the invisible career cost. These diplomats meet the criteria for top-secret security clearances, yet the assignment restrictions can create a “stigma,” one diplomat said. “You’re in the department in highly sensitive meetings, or if you are trying to bid on your next assignment, and you have that cloud hanging over you — people think, ‘Can this person be trusted?’ or ‘Maybe we shouldn’t hire this person because they might have a security restriction?’ It definitely prevents people from serving to their fullest ability.” Taxpayer dollars It also costs the US taxpayer. The government spends up to $480,000 per diplomat for two years of language training in what the State Department inspector general calls “super hard languages” — Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean — before diplomats start work at a post. It costs millions of dollars when “we could instead be tapping our workforce that already has that ability and language skill, and immediately start going into the field and supporting US policy,” said one US-based diplomat. Despite the challenges, AAPI diplomats are increasingly optimistic about change. They point to bipartisan support in Congress and also to Blinken. Blinken “is familiar with the issue, he recognizes that it is a problem, he has acted on it before and made the only change so far that has helped,” said one diplomat. As deputy secretary of state during the Obama administration, Blinken helped institute reform that required Diplomatic Security to tell diplomats if they had assignment restrictions and why. Before that, diplomats often weren’t aware until they applied for and got jobs in those countries. Led by lawmakers such as Democratic Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas, Congress passed legislation in 2017 that created a formal process for diplomats to appeal their assignment restrictions within 30 days and required State to explain the number and nature of restrictions and preclusions in the last three years. The process that has emerged is more of a review than an appeal, diplomats and House aides said. If diplomats ask for assignment restrictions to be reconsidered, they go back to the same office — Diplomatic Security — that made the original decision. And instead of explaining the nature of the restrictions, Diplomatic Security just sent lawmakers annual numbers with no elaboration. The chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York, and the committee’s lead Republican, Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas, have added language to the Department of State Authorization Act of 2021 calling for an appeals process that wraps up within 60 days and mirrors the steps taken when a diplomat appeals the denial or retraction of their security clearance: The issue goes to another group within State to review. If you want to follow agricultural politics, this Tumblog is a good start. Thank you, followers. But who are we kidding? I try to post one item daily out of hundreds of possibilities. But to really follow agricultural politics in the U.S. you should follow Politico’s Morning Agriculture newsletter. Here is a sampling of stories I thought of some importance from today’s (1/12/18) edition:
TRUMP SAYS 'NO RUSH' FOR NAFTA WITHDRAWAL: Trump said he recognized that Mexico could be hamstrung from negotiating a new NAFTA deal before that nation's presidential election to be held on July 1. "I'm leaving it a little flexible because they have an election coming up," Trump told The Wall Street Journal. "I understand a lot of things are hard to negotiate prior to an election."He did not write off the possibility of a withdrawal, but Trump said he would rather be able to negotiate a new deal. "We've made a lot of headway," he said. "We're moving along nicely." His words could offer some breathing room in the tense negotiations as the sixth round of NAFTA talks is less than two weeks away.Negotiators from the U.S., Mexico and Canada have said that they want to wrap up talks at the end of March, in order to avoid having the 24-year-old trade deal become a political weapon either in Mexico's elections or the U.S. congressional midterm elections in November.Mexico's presidential front-runner Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his left-leaning Morena political party have repeatedly called for the negotiations to be held off until after the election. Current Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto's approval ratings are at record lows: Less than 20 percent of Mexicans trust his administration. However, a López Obrador win could cause a whole host of problems for Trump on issues like border security, immigration and trade, as Pro's Sabrina Rodriguez recently wrote.NAFTA could help fund the border wall: While Mexico has repeatedly shot down Trump's demands that they pay for the border wall, Trump said Mexico could do so through a new NAFTA. "We make a good deal on NAFTA, and, say, I'm going to take a small percentage of that money and it's going toward the wall," Trump told The Journal on Thursday. "Guess what? Mexico's paying." ....Earlier this week, Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland made her own trade-focused trip to Capitol Hill, meeting with nine lawmakers ..... On Twitter, she thanked Roberts for his "continued commitment to #agriculture trade between #CanUS and farmers in both our countries."
FISHERMEN AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS SEE VICTORY IN PESTICIDES OPINION: The EPA has been given one year to better protect salmon and their habitat now that the National Marine Fisheries Services issued a biological opinion concluding that three widely used agricultural pesticides were harming dozens of species - as well as the marine life up the food chain.
A rundown of the fight: Environmentalists and salmon fishermen have been demanding for years that the federal government take action to limit three pesticides: chlorpyrifos, malathion and diazinon. Under section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, any federal agency has to consult with either Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Services, depending on the type of species. The environmental group EarthJustice has had an ongoing suit since 2001 on the salmon issue.
.............
While progress appeared to be made during the Obama administration, in March 2017, EPA officials denied a petition from environmentalists calling for a ban on the pesticide chlorpyrifos, bucking the Obama administration's findings that the chemical poses health risks. "It's taken far longer than we ever envisioned when we started this," said Goldman.....
And now, a word from the salmon: Over the years, the salmon populations have drastically declined. Glen Spain, Northwest regional director of thePacific Coast Federation of Fishermen's Associations, says that salmon runs are 20 percent of less of what they were 50 years ago. "It's a major health problem, too. It's very simple. It doesn't make sense putting poison in our rivers," said Spain. "We're exposing the public and we're exposing other species that need that river for other lives."
What comes next? It's unclear whether the EPA is likely to enforce this opinion in a deregulatory era promised by President Donald Trump and supported by Administrator Scott Pruitt. ....
FDA TO MAKE MOVES ON NUTRITION POLICY IN 2018: When Trump took office, few (no one?) predicted that his FDA would make nutrition policy a top priority. But indeed the agency on Thursday made its intentions official by releasing a policy roadmap for 2018.FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told POLITICO in November that the agency was working on a "broader policy initiative" on nutrition, and the document unveiled by FDA Thursday sheds more light on those plans. It highlights for the first time that nutrition will be among FDA's top areas of focus this year.
Nutrition education campaign on the horizon: Several specific actions that are expected to be part of the larger "Nutrition Action Plan," including more guidance on menu labeling; information on Nutrition Facts labeling rules; and plans for a new public education campaign of both new labeling regulations.
Sodium still on the to-do list: FDA's work on sodium reduction - something that caused considerable controversy during the Obama administration - will continue to be part of the agency's work on nutrition. The document lists "advancing guidance on dietary sodium reduction" as an action it plans to take. Pros, find the full story from Pro Ag's Helena Bottemiller Evich here.
WHAT DEMOCRATS NEED TO REACH RURAL AMERICA: If Democrats want to win more support in rural counties, the party needs to become a bit less elitist, suggests a new report from a PAC started by Rep. Cheri Bustos, a Democrat that represents a rural district that Trump won handily. The document, first reported by POLITICO Magazine senior staff writer Michael Kruse, is based on interviews with more than 70 Democratic residents and was distributed to top Dems on Capitol Hill.
Rural Ds by the numbers: In 2009, the report notes, Democrats held 57 percent of the heartland's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Now: 39 percent. In 2008, Barack Obama won seven of the eight heartland states. In 2012, he won six. In 2016, Trump won six. There are 737 counties in the Midwest - Trump won all but 63 of them. (emphasis added)
A rural D raising cattle: The magazine piece profiles Terry Goodin, who serves as superintendent of his local school district, raises cattle, and is the last Indiana Democrat to represent an entirely rural area. In the report, Goodin says the Democratic Party is "lazy," "out of touch with mainstream America," relying on "too much identity politics" where "winners and losers are picked by their labels." Sexism at Bed Bath & Beyond
I want to take a moment to talk with you guys about sexism. I know a lot of people view it as a dying problem or not as bad as it once was. And come on sexism at a retail store? Really? No exactly an important area. Well strap in I’m about to tell you a long slightly rambling story about the most badass woman of color I know.
So if you don’t mind taking a moment out of your busy days to read this post. Because I’m writing this about one fucking amazing woman and the shit she has to deal with. I know this won’t get reblogs or comments or whatever but I’d like some people out there to know about what’s happening because she deserves some sort of recognition.
Now first let me tell you a little background so you understand the settings and such. My store is called store 42. It is the largest Bed Bath and Beyond in the world and it is located in the busiest area Chelsea in New York City. On sixth avenue if you wanna get specific. It is also known as the flagship store. On a daily bases we get more foot traffic than quite a few stores have in a week. And I’m talking about our slow days here. We also get a lot of celebrities in here because of the location. So check out is a very busy area.
I work in what we call the Frontend. The Frontend is where you pay. It is also the broader term that refers to three departments; customer service, home delivery, and checkout. Though when we say Frontend we usually means checkout. I’m officially called a cashier though I haven’t been just a cashier in years. I am also trained in customer service, home delivery, and the office. Yes our store is so big we have a floor for all the offices and receptionists answer phones.
Now every store has a hierarchy and recently the titles of this hierarchy changed. But most of the time it is generally the same in. BBB it goes like this:
Store Manager – the boss
Seniors – these are like the top dogs of the store. They each supervise a section of the store such as Frontend, Hardside, Home Accents, Bedding, and Bath
LOD aka Leader on Deck – they are the person in charge of the whole store only during set periods of time really this person is who we call when a final decision needs to be made. These people are typically higher ranking Department Supervisors.
Department Supervisor (Previously called manager)
LEAD (Previously called supervisor why the name change? No clue! Also they are pretty much a department supervisor just without the pay)
Associate or Cashier
Now in the Frontend/Customer Service there must always be a LEAD or Department Supervisor (DS). During the day there are four people schedules to cover these departments. Two for each department, one in the morning and one in the evening. There is a little crossover to cover breaks and such. That is the minimum required to run the Frontend properly. The Frontend LEADs/DS are extremely busy. And there are a lot of jobs that need to be done. But the thing is none of the LEADs/DS do shit. Like seriously it’s ridiculous. They do the basics that’s it. Only Shelina does anything. She in fact does everything. And frankly that’s not fair to her.
She does:
The cashiers schedules
Writes the breakdowns (breakdowns tell the cashiers which register they are on and when their break is)
Orders products
Orders candy
Orders drinks
Orders change
Changes products (the Frontend unlike other departments changes what products are featured there based off the season for example we just had the summer season and then we changed it to back to college and now we’re changing it to the holidays/cooking)
Deals with incoming shipments
Product refills
There isn’t anything she doesn’t do. And no one helps her. She does it by herself. She works so hard she rarely takes breaks. She doesn’t have the time. She never complains when all the cashiers call out in the morning and not only does she have to do everything listed above but also be the cashier. She never complains when she is the only one closing or only has one person to help. She still gets everything done. Unlike very other LEADs/DS who bitch about it constantly.
This woman is a fucking superhero. She is the only Supervisor who is respectful and has your back. She won’t yell at you and in fact has never raised her voice. Mind you when she’s pissed you know it but she uses her words and makes it clear how she feels.
This woman spent the last two years teaching me everything she knows in order to have someone around to help her because she’s getting older. She a mother of 3 and a grandmother of 3 who helps out her daughter with her grandson by watching him every weekend. This woman is amazing.
Not a single Department Supervisor or LEAD helps her. When she orders drinks or candy and they come in instead of putting them where they belong everyone else puts signs on them saying for Shelina. Like seriously it is not hard to sort the candy by what department it is stored in. This job is not rocket science.
Every single cashier loves her because she is the only person we can rely on. In fact when she goes on vacation we all have to bare ourselves for the chaos that comes. Even callouts are higher because no one wants to deal. The other LEADs/DS can’t even write the breakdown themselves. They literally cannot survive without her. She inspires such loyalty in us when BBB fired 90% of the Managers all of us swore if she was one of them we’d walk out because no way where we going to deal with the shit storm of this job without her.
And BTW BBB fired most of their managers and when I mean most I mean about 90%. They fired so many that there was literally no one in charge and there still really isn’t in a lot of the departments. Plus they had no plan for what to do after they were gone. These people where with the company for at least 10 years a piece. It is disgusting they fired these long time employees with no warning just to save a few dollars. They made up the best of the company.
Now recently our Store Manager Christin left and we got a new store manager Anthony. Now like I said everyone knows Shelina is the one to run the Frontend which means she takes care of the most important department with little to no help. Frankly I don’t count. Only Anthony refuses to go talk to her rather going to Demascus I guess the next higher up after Shelina. Now Demascus does shit. He talks down to people and treats women like objects. If he can’t flirt/hit on/charm you well he doesn’t like you. He needs to have his little fan club. He’s been there the longest after Shelina and you’d think he’d know how to do the basics like order products, figure out what product should go up on the pillar, how to put the product on the pillar so it looks “filled and full” (Shelina taught me that the product wall must always look “filled and full” and there should never be an empty peg or be able to see the white of the wall). I recently watched him try to redo a pillar with the new season’s products and the results looked like a giant mess.
I gave Anthony the benefit of the doubt that he was new and didn’t know how this store worked. Though I felt like Christin wouldn’t have left without teaching him the ropes. But time goes by and Demascus still fails and Anthony still won’t talk to Shelina. He also gets confused when he sees me doing the physical aspect of my job. Now people like to joke that I’m Shelina’s assistant and in a way that’s true. She can’t do a lot of the physical aspects of the job anymore so I climb ladders, take down products, run back and forth getting stuff, ect. Did I mention I’m a girl? No yeah well I am. And I do more of the physical aspects of the job then most of the guys. I’m willing to do this for her. In exchange she teaches me.
Then Shelina said something to me. She said oh it’s because he’s sexist and thinks that Demascus (the man) should be in charge of all that. Great the guy who likes to do nothing is now in charge of everything. That’s going to work out great. So Shelina being Shelina saves him, again and again, because as I said before he knows shit. She does everything Anthony tells Demascus to do. Now she does this because she takes pride in her work and pride in how her department looks. It doesn’t matter who gets the credit to her.
But see she’s getting tired because no one is helping her. There is only so long someone can go without any help. Everyone they promote or higher none of them want to do shit or learn. She spent two years training me in the hopes that I would become a LEAD and she would finally get help. But I recently learned I will never be promoted. Not because I’m not good at my job but because I’m not liked this having to do with an incident where they scheduled no managers to work so the LODs had to cover the department. Now the LOD in question was Fei. Now everyone knows that Shelina trained me and I can literally run the department by myself at this point so guess what he did? He left me alone in the Frontend and never came back. So I did what I had to do and I ran the department. I made sure things didn’t fall apart. Because of the Fei helped to spread rumors about me and how I talked about the other LEADs/DS behind their backs in order to cover up the fact he left me alone. This cost me any chance at a future with the company. Shelina is still bitter about this fact while I have sadly accepted my fate. The only regret I have is I will never be able to help take off some of the pressure she has to deal with.
Back to the main point. There was an incident today. We keep the Dyson (expensive vacuum cleaners) up on high shelving in the Frontend. Not that this is in anyway remotely safe. These vacuums are heavy and located extremely high up and they over fill the shelves to the point the weight is literally bending the metal. Now usually if there isn’t any of a model on the shelf usually we don’t have it. Last week we learned that while we didn’t have any of a particular model on the shelf there was some located on what we call the Mez (a storage area located above the loading dock). But did anyone get them and bring them to the Frontend? Nope. And Shelina and I had no idea about them cause guess what? No one tells anyone anything. There is zero communication in this store.
We have a “Dyson lady” who is there for a few hours a day from the Dyson Company to talk about their product. We used to have a lovely woman there only recently this new lady (a fucking disrespectful and rude bitch) came to the store.
Now we have cards that the models on them and the customer brings them to the checkout gives them to us and we get the Dyson down. Only the customers kept bringing cards to vacuums we didn’t have. So she told me to go get the cards to the ones we didn’t have to prevent the mix up. And when I tried to do this the Dyson Lady yelled at me how we have the vacuums in the store like seriously how the fuck was I supposed to know. It was on the Mez no one fucking goes up there. I then tell her that unfortunately no one brought them down and I wasn’t able to get to them. Why you might ask? Because they are fucking large ass vacuum cleaners and the only way to bring them down was to lug them down the fucking stairs all the way from the back of the largest BBB in the world to the front of the store. I am not that strong.
So I go back to the front and go to tell Shelina but I don’t get the chance cause here comes Dyson Lady with Anthony. I don’t know what is said between them but it probably wasn’t good. What I do catch is what Anthony asks about “well which Dyson’s so we have up here?” and I answer because I’ve been the one going up and down the ladder all morning getting them for customers.
Shelina has me take him over to the Dyson’s only he then curses Shelina out like WTF you don’t say shit about your employees especially to those directly under them. He’s literally saying the nastiest shit about my superior to me and I’m at the bottom of the food chain. He is the goddamn store manager you’d think he’d have some respect. He then tells me “I don’t a fucking damn what Shelina tells you I’m your boss not her” and excuse fucking you. She’s never told me any sort of shit like that. She’s never told me to obey her over others. You know why I listen/chose her over the others? Because she treats me with respect and kindness something 98% of BBB Supervisors don’t do. In fact she’s never said a bad word about any of them other than that she’s disappointed in how they do their jobs because she knows they could do better. They just choose not to. Not only that Shelina is in fact my boss and you are her boss. He is so disgusting in what he says I am in literally shock and can’t manage to say a word in retort which I truly regret now though maybe it’s better I didn’t say what I wanted to because frankly he is fucking misogynistic sexist asshole and I would have said it right to his face. I have loyalty to those around me whether I like them or not we’re all here to do a job. Unlike him who apparently will say the nastiest fucking shit about his employees.
Now then he tells me he wants me to do the count (the count is when we count up the valuable products in the store to know how many we have this is done every morning) from now on and be in charge of the Dyson’s. I point out that I’m not a LEADs/DS and I don’t do the count. He then asks “why the fuck is he talking to me?” which frankly why is he? I tell him it’s because he wanted to know what Dyson we have. He then tells me to go get the missing Dyson’s from the Mez with “my buddy” Anthony (AJ is what he goes by thanks for remembering what name he uses). He tells me this with a wink and a nudge like we’re fucking high school girls talking about the guy I’m secretly dating. Now AJ is my best friend. My friend. We aren’t dating and I have no intention of ever dating him. It also isn’t a secret we’re close but everyone knows this and knows we aren’t together. People have assumed we’re dating before cause apparently a guy and girl can’t just be friends but what throws me is the fact my fucking boss my fucking elder boss like in his sixties made a insinuated sexual reference between me and a friend/coworker. That tell you what he thinks about men and women.
I shouldn’t be blown away by the sexism shown by my store manager. I’ve heard a lot of things. Two of my male LEADs/DS spoke horribly about a female LEADs/DS right in front of me. It was so disgusting in fact I avoided them for the rest of the day. People have the tendency to forget I’m there because I’m quiet and all over the place. They just say whatever in front of me. But still my store manager being a sexist pig to my DS caught me off guard. He’s only been with the company for a year Shelina has been with the company for over twenty. She knows more about BBB than anyone. And yet because she is a woman all her years of experience, all her hard work mean nothing.
If you’ve gotten this far thank you for reading. I know I went a little all over the place here but I hope you got my point. This amazing badass woman is treated like shit on a daily basis. I just wish there was something I could do other than writing this stupid blog post about it. Because she deserves the world.
#bed bath and beyond#sexism#feminism#woc#anti sexism#I hope I properly showed how awesome and badass of a woman she is for dealing with this shit on a daily basis#she is fucking incredible and I'm proud to know her#rambling

Grassley: State Department Uncovered 30 Security Issues Related to Clinton Email Server
Senator Chuck Grassley is leading a congressional oversight effort into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified information on her unauthorized private computer server. Now he says the State Department has identified 23 violations and seven infractions in its ongoing review of the mishandling of classified information associated with the case. In a statement, the Senate President Pro Tempore and Finance Committee Chairman said: “The State Department’s update noted that 15 individuals were assessed for violations or infractions, and some of them were found culpable of multiple security incidents. Individuals with a security violation or three or more infractions have been referred to the proper officials for documentation and possible discipline. The department also acknowledged that the number of violations and infractions may change as the investigation progresses.” The revelations came in an update to Senator Chuck Grassley, who has been leading congressional oversight into the mishandling of classified information and the alienation of federal records. That update letter from Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs Mary Elizabeth Taylor also states: “In every instance in which the Department found an individual to be culpable of a valid security violation or three or more infractions, the Department forwarded the outcome to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security's Office of Personnel Security and Suitability, to be placed in the individuals' official security file. All valid security incidents are reviewed by DS and taken into account every time an individual's eligibility for access to classified information is considered. This referral occurred whether or not the individual was currently employed with the Department of State and such security files are kept indefinitely. “Consistent with the referral policy, for individuals who were still employed with the Department at the time of adjudication, the Department referred all valid security violations or multiple infractions to the Bureau of Human Resources. In reviewing any violation of agency policy including policies regarding the appropriate handling of classified or sensitive information, the Department may consider a broad range of disciplinary or other administrative actions. These may include, depending upon the circumstances, counseling, reprimand, suspension, and/or separation.” The update follows a January inquiry from Grassley seeking details on the nature of the security incidents and the officials involved. Grassley first sought information in the department’s review of the mishandling of classified information related to the unauthorized server in 2017. The department confirmed its review and outlined its procedures for the review later that year and acknowledged in 2018 that some senior department members no longer retained clearances. Building cohesive societies: Southeast Asian states take on gargantuan challenge
By James M. Dorsey
A podcast version of this story is available on Soundcloud, Itunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spreaker, Pocket Casts, Tumblr, and Patreon, Podbean and Castbox.
Several Southeast Asian governments and social movements are seeking to counter mounting polarization and inter-communal strife across the globe fuelled by the rise of civilizationalist leaders who think in exclusionary rather than inclusionary terms.
In the most high-brow of various initiatives, King Abdullah of Jordan is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the inaugural International Conference on Cohesive Societies organized by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) with support from the Singapore government.
Singapore president Halimah bint Yacob has mooted the conference as a high-level forum involving religious leaders akin to the annual Shangri-La Dialogue that for the past 17 years brings together annually senior Asian, European and US government officials in what is Asia’s foremost security forum.
In what amounts to a timely strategic effort to tackle what may be one of the most fundamental threats to peace and security, the conference reflects a growing concern that global polarization and civilisationalism could fuel inter-communal tensions and militancy in Southeast Asian societies.
It crowns a separate Indonesian initiative that targets religious reform and Malaysian willingness to speak out on controversial or sensitive issues.
Southeast Asian concerns include fear that Rohingya lingering in refugee camps in Bangladesh with no prospects could radicalize, the possibility of extremists capitalizing on the fact that reconstruction of the devastated southern Philippine city of Marawi has stalled two years after it was overrun by jihadists, and the danger that suspected sleeper cells of groups like the Islamic State will seek to disrupt the region’s social fabric.
"The social fabric of many communities is stressed by extremism, exclusivism and polarisation. It is important for us to grow trust across communities. This will always be a work in progress, so it is an effort we must constantly invest in," Ms. Yacob said on the eve of the Singapore conference.
King Abdullah, in a separate statement, warned that “attacking and excluding others, insulting other peoples and their faiths and convictions - this is no way forward. The future lies in unity and respect, not division and stereotypes."
Ms. Yacob and King Abdullah’s warnings were designed to be an anti-dote to rising prejudice and racism fuelled by the rise of supremacism of various stripes and Islamophobia as well as increased anti-Semitism that often is encouraged by world leaders for ideological or opportunistic reasons.
For Ms. Yacob and King Abdullah, the concern is not a far-from-my-bed show.
Human rights activists were taken aback when Myanmar leader, Nobel peace prize winner and one time human rights advocate Aung San Suu Kyi agreed earlier this month during a visit to Hungary with far-right, staunchly anti-immigrant prime minister Viktor Orban that both Southeast Asia and Europe were struggling with the “emergence of the issue of coexistence with continuously growing Muslim populations.”
Southeast Asia and its Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are home to the world’s most populous and foremost Muslim democracy, Indonesia, as well as Malaysia that has been among the most outspoken in criticizing Myanmar’s repression of the Rohingya and one of the few Islamic countries to speak out about China’s crackdown on Turkic Muslims in the troubled north-western province of Xinjiang.
To King Abdullah, Ms. Yacob’s backyard must look like something approaching paradise. Conflict characterizes all of his kingdom’s borders.
Moreover, the Middle East, beyond Jordan’s immediate borders, is wracked by civil wars, national conflicts and regional rivalries that all involve aspects of prejudice, right-wing nationalism, militancy and sectarianism.
Add to that, the world is holding its breath as the United States, Saudi Arabia and Iran square off in the Gulf in a dangerous dance that threatens to spiral out of control.
Less highbrow but no less ambitious, Nahdlatul Ulama, the world’s largest Sunni Muslim movement, has launched a campaign with Indonesian government backing to “reinterpret and recontextualize” Islam.
The campaign amounts to more than simply confronting ultra-conservatism and militancy. It is a pushback against the notion that secularism and pluralism are expressions of a Western conspiracy to undermine Islam.
If successful, Nahdlatul Ulama’s strategy could have far-reaching consequences. For many Middle Eastern autocrats, adopting a more tolerant, pluralistic interpretation of Islam would mean allowing far greater social and political freedoms and embracing concepts of pluralism. That would likely lead to a weakening of autocrats’ grip on power.
Similarly, political scientist and Islam scholar Ahmet T. Kuru throws down a gauntlet in a forthcoming book by arguing that the notion of Islam rejecting a separation of religion and state is based on “a fabricated hadith” or saying of the Prophet Mohammed that has since been perpetuated.
Singapore’s conference like Nahdlatul Ulama’s initiative constitute accepting a gargantuan but critical challenge posed by civilizationalist leaders who reflect deeply rooted currents in societies irrespective of their political systems and/or notions and myths that have been nurtured over centuries.
Inclusiveness is the magic wand touted by all seeking to halt a slide toward societies characterized by fragmentation, political polarization and inter-communal discord. Yet, the enormity of the challenge lies in addressing deep-seated grievances and challenging taboos.
Discussing the rise of populism in the West, politics scholar Matthew Goodwin identifies what he terms the four Ds that drive democracy’s turmoil: distrust of political institutions that have become less representative; the destructive impact of fear of loss of national identity, culture and way of life; ethno-national deprivation fuelled by liberal elites’ focus on migrant and minority rights; and the dealignment of significant segments of the electorate with the traditional parties they long supported.
Mr. Goodwin’s four Ds are likely to challenge cohesiveness even if, as Financial Times columnist Simon Kuper notes, their foremost political beneficiaries are being sucked into the swamp they vowed to drain.
US president Donald J. Trump, Brexit party leader Nigel Farage, Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu, former Austrian vice-chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, and billionaire Czech prime minister Andrej Babis are all fighting off allegations of wrongdoing.
The allegations and their legal entanglements mean that they risk losing the high ground on issues of corruption, alongside immigration and security, a key pillar of their recent success.
Putting forward an optimistic argument, Mr. Kuper notes that concerns about migration and security no longer top Europeans’ agenda with younger voters mobilising around climate change.
Polls, however, suggest that the popularity of leaders accused of illegitimately benefitting from wrongdoing or questionable practices and their political parties have lost little of their allure despite climate change increasingly becoming a major concern.
Populists’ current Teflon effect means that building cohesive societies will have to involve finding a middle ground between majoritarian concerns and concepts of diversity, multiculturalism and minority rights.
It amounts to manoeuvring minefields and treading on uncharted territory irrespective of culture and political system.
In the absence of the perfect blueprint, countries like Singapore, New Zealand and Norway have in their own ways taken a lead in attempting to make inclusion a pillar of policy.
While inter-communal harmony has long been a driver of Singapore’s social and economic policies, New Zealand and Norway responded to traumatic acts of political violence by bucking the trend towards polarization, profiling and concepts of us and them by saying not me instead of me too.
The proof is in the pudding.
New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern, who became an icon of compassion and inclusivity with her response to the killing of 50 people in March in two Christchurch mosques, recalled a Muslim woman reacting to the government’s response by telling her that, despite having been a target, she had "never felt more at home (in New Zealand) than she had in the last 10 days" since the attacks.
Singapore’s creation of a global forum in which opposing views and grievances are aired constitutes a vital contribution towards creating the environment for the building of more cohesive societies. It is a vital cog in a mesh of attempts to achieve legal reform and call out abuse and violations of human rights.
Taken together, they hold out the promise of a concerted effort to counter debilitating prejudice and bias even if a truly cohesive, harmonious society may prove to be a utopia.
Dr. James M. Dorsey is a senior fellow at Nanyang Technological University’s S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, an adjunct senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Middle East Institute and co-director of the University of Wuerzburg’s Institute of Fan Culture.

How This Fraud Builder Tries To Fool His Clients | Purani Dili Talkies | Hindi Short Films
