this might be a dumb question since you have a whole blog about presidents but do you have a specific political hero?
Muammar Qaddafi...just kidding!
My hero has always been John Lewis.
"When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act, and each generation must do its part to help build what we called the Beloved Community, a nation and world society at peace with itself.
Ordinary people with extraordinary vision can redeem the soul of America by getting in what I call good trouble, necessary trouble. Voting and participating in the democratic process are key. The vote is the most powerful nonviolent change agent you have in a democratic society. You must use it because it is not guaranteed. You can lose it.
You must also study and learn the lessons of history because humanity has been involved in this soul-wrenching, existential struggle for a very long time. People on every continent have stood in your shoes, through decades and centuries before you. The truth does not change, and that is why the answers worked out long ago can help you find solutions to the challenges of our time."
-- John Lewis, essay written shortly before his death on July 17, 2020.

Epic genetically modified women plus one shrimp

Some of you may remember Selma, my leopard seal hybrid girl who used to teach Vreaz. Sadly she isn't around for the main storyline. Kayoko (orca) is the head diplomat for Genizix-modified sophonts in the Zhagaviit Galactic Community. Like Selma, she's one of the few experiments left from Earth.

Selma Burke began playing with clay around the age of seven. And with that experience, she discovered a love of making sculptures. “It was there in 1907 that I discovered me,” she said, looking back.
While Selma loved art, her mother encouraged Selma to pursue a financially stable career. So Selma studied nursing and took a job as a private nurse in New York City in the late 1920s.
But in New York City, Selma found much inspiration from the Harlem Renaissance scene. She found a community of artists and began making art a more significant part of life.
To improve her skills, Selma began taking art classes at Sarah Lawrence College. She then traveled to Europe for training and projects. In 1941, Selma earned an MFA from Columbia. And the year prior, while still a student herself, she opened the Selma Burke School of Sculpture.
Selma dedicated herself to teaching and making art. She would go on to create sculptures of numerous famous figures, including Duke Ellington and Martin Luther King Jr. However, her most famous work was a portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. That portrait hangs today at the Recorder of Deeds Building in Washington, D.C.

what do you think like . so since so many maelstrom characters die do they have any significant thoughts ,,,, like are they relieved . scared . upset. angry. do they think of anyone dead that they think they’re going to see or alive that they think they’re going miss
I should tell you there isn't really a mermaid "afterlife" like. funeral practices vary (working on this) but most people will just put your body into the gash at the centre of the world with the assumption that the nutrients of your body will feed the creatures who live there. some people think a small vestige of your consciousness enters the water and you are in an unknowing unconscious constant state of calm forever. and even fewer people (usually groups who live close to the surface) believe the same thing happens only with the void above instead. Enough about this tho this only means that nobody thinks "oh I'm going to see X again". In terms of final thoughts I will go in death order for the main characters
enith doesn't have any death thoughts bc she never realises she's going to die she just gets chomped with no time to even process anything. Last thoughts would be "can I really kill my friend"
melyde does see her death coming but for a moment she still thinks she can make it. when she realises she can't it's just kind of like not fair not fair not fair not like this not like this
io is kinda disbelieving when she realises. "is this really what it's come to" and an urge to laugh kinda thing. she's spent the past few hours in irrational levels of desperation so it's like. of course. of course. hahaha. give her a bit more time and she would start to feel cheated and angry but ofc. she didn't get any more time
isther. after she puts her 'plan' into action the anger fades to determination fades to a mix of fear and resignation. this is the only option for her because she couldn't turn around and live with herself after this but she doesn't really want to die either. she's like. lost. but also very sure of herself. idk
selma's kind of preoccupied for most of her death with making sure that anemone knows that a) she can perform the final song and b) she has to sacrifice herself to make sure teagan can get home. after she's 100% done with that it kinda kicks in that she's dead. and she's really sad about it but putting on a brave face for ane/teagan. she wishes she could've rebuilt her childhood town like she wanted to and she wishes she could continue to protect her students and she wants to stay she wants to stay she wants to stay
anemone is the only one who we are actually in her perspective as she dies. and for her it's like. peaceful. because she knows she's doing this for teagan and for her people. also most of her friends are dead so there isn't anything really. left for her here and this is where she has been heading all along. she'll miss her brother and teagan and she knows they will miss her but. she's at peace
#something something isther and anemone being the only ones who CHOOSE to die#bbi maelstrom#enith#melyde#iolanthe#isther#selma#anemone#anelma#bc ofc#isthmone#purely bc of the parallels between

Letter from Mrs. E. Jackson in Favor of Voting Rights
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: Bill Files of the Committee on the Judiciary
Tell her I condemn Gov Wallace for his shameful conduct in undue use of tear gas and war tactics in Selma and am cooperating with the administration to punish the offenders and to prevent(?) recurrance(?) of the mischief(?)
1460 Sterling Pl. #16
Brooklyn 13, N.Y.
March 8, 1965
Dear Sir:
For God sakes help those poor innocent people in Selma Alabama. If your voice or vote can be of service now is the time to use it. We can't sit by any longer and watch the shocking events in Ala. Send troops there not overseas and protect those people right to vote. It's sicken and as a mother of four sons I can't stand it any longer. To think that one day my sons could lose their lives protecting those ignorant people down there is unbearable.
Sincerly,
Mrs. E. Jackson.
Mrs. E. Jackson wrote to the House Judiciary Committee the day after Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama. She was reacting to scenes of police brutality during a voting rights march that many Americans witnessed on television news programs. The interlined handwriting in pencil is likely that of House Judiciary Chairman Emanuel Celler, who was Mrs. Jackson's representative in Congress and an active supporter of voting rights legislation in the House.
