July 6, 1964 - The Beatles' first feature film, A Hard Day's Night, had its premiĂšre at the London Pavilion.
A Hard Day's Night is a 1964 British musical comedy film directed by Richard Lester and starring the Beatles—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr—during the height of Beatlemania. It was written by Alun Owen and originally released by United Artists. The film portrays 36 hours in the lives of the group.
The film was a financial and critical success. Forty years after its release, Time magazine rated it as one of the all-time great 100 films. In 1997, British critic Leslie Halliwell described it as a "comic fantasia with music; an enormous commercial success with the director trying every cinematic gag in the book" and awarded it a full four stars.[The film is credited as being one of the most influential of all musical films, inspiring numerous spy films, the Monkees' television show and pop music videos. In 1999, the British Film Institute ranked it the 88th greatest British film of the 20th century.
The movie's strange title originated from something said by Ringo Starr, who described it this way in an interview with disc jockey Dave Hull in 1964: "We went to do a job, and we'd worked all day and we happened to work all night. I came up still thinking it was day I suppose, and I said, 'It's been a hard day ...' and I looked around and saw it was dark so I said, '... night!' So we came to A Hard Day's Night."
PLOT
Bound for a London show from Liverpool, the Beatles escape a horde of fans ("A Hard Day's Night"). Once they are aboard the train and trying to relax, various interruptions test their patience: after a dalliance with a female passenger, Paul's grandfather is confined to the guard's van and the four lads join him there to keep him company. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr play a card game, entertaining some schoolgirls before arriving at their desired destination ("I Should Have Known Better").
Upon arrival in London, the Beatles are driven to a hotel, only to feel trapped inside. They are tasked to answer numerous letters and fan mail in their hotel room but instead, they sneak out to party ("I Wanna Be Your Man", "Don't Bother Me", "All My Loving"). After being caught by their manager Norm (Norman Rossington), they return to find out that Paul's grandfather John (Wilfrid Brambell) went to the casino. After causing minor trouble at the casino, the group is taken to the theatre where their performance is to be televised. After rehearsals ("If I Fell"), the boys leave through a fire escape and dance around a field but are forced to leave by the owner of the property ("Can't Buy Me Love"). On their way back to the theatre, they are separated when a woman named Millie (Anna Quayle) recognizes John as someone famous but cannot recall who he is. George is also mistaken for an actor auditioning for a television show featuring a trendsetter hostess. The boys all return to rehearse another song ("And I Love Her") and after goofing around backstage, they play another song to impress the makeup artists ("I'm Happy Just to Dance with You").
While waiting to perform, Ringo is forced to look after Paul's grandfather and decides to spend some time alone reading a book. Paul's grandfather, a "villain, a real mixer", convinces him to go outside to experience life rather than reading books. Ringo goes off by himself ("This Boy" instrumental). He tries to have a quiet drink in a pub, takes pictures, walks alongside a canal, and rides a bicycle along a railway station platform. While the rest of the band frantically and unsuccessfully attempts to find Ringo, he is arrested for acting in a suspicious manner. Paul's grandfather joins him shortly after attempting to sell photographs wherein he forged the boys' signatures. Paul's grandfather eventually makes a run for it and tells the rest of the band where Ringo is. The boys all go to the station to rescue Ringo but end up running away from the police back to the theatre ("Can't Buy Me Love") and the concert goes ahead as planned. After the concert ("Tell Me Why", "If I Fell", "I Should Have Known Better", "She Loves You"), the band is taken away from the hordes of fans via helicopter.
From beatlesbible:
The premiĂšre was attended by The Beatles and their wives and girlfriends, and a host of important guests including Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon. Nearby Piccadilly Circus was closed to traffic as 12,000 fans jostled for a glimpse of the group.
“I remember Piccadilly being completely filled. We thought we would just show up in our limo, but it couldn't get through for all the people. It wasn't frightening - we never seemed to get worried by crowds. It always appeared to be a friendly crowd; there never seemed to be a violent face.”
~ Paul McCartney, Anthology
It was a charity event held in support of the Variety Club Heart Fund and the Docklands Settlements, and the most expensive tickets cost 15 guineas (ÂŁ15.75).
After the screening The Beatles, the royal party and other guests including The Rolling Stones enjoyed a champagne supper party at the Dorchester Hotel, after which some of them adjourned to the Ad Lib Club until the early hours of the morning.

1. Are you named after anyone?
Yea, my Mum has always been a huge fan of Elvis, so she named me after his only daughter and I'm pretty fond of my name.
2. When was the last time you cried?
I think I cried this afternoon watching a puppy tribute on tiktok 'cause those almost always get me sobbing, even more so if I followed the account.
3. Do you have kids?
Nah, never wanted children but did always say if it ever happened then I'd pray for a boy, lmao. I do consider Sammi my baby, though <3 love that white ball of floof <3
4. What sports do you play/have played?
Growing up I absolutely loved playing tennis and swimming at the local pools. I have not done either one of those since I was about 15, so it's been a hot second.
5. Do you use sarcasm?
Yes I do and generally get into a lot of shit for it, but that's okay, lmao.
6. What’s the first thing you notice about people?
Either their eyes or their hair.
7. What’s your eye color?
They were very blue when I was born but with age they've gone a blue/grey colour.
8. Scary movies or happy endings?
I actually like both, depending entirely on the mood I'm in when I'm choosing what to watch, so it differs. I love horror movies and am always on the hunt for something to genuinely frighten me, but besides E.T., nothing has achieved that goal. I also love a good happy ending, cause it wins the fight against the misery of life sometimes, lol.
9. Any talents?
I would say writing, thanks to the kind words and encouragement received from friends and family and teachers over the years. It would be nice to one day actually write a novel and earn success with that venture, or perhaps just fill a book with shorter stories and sell that. That would be a lovely goal to achieve.
10. Where were you born?
A lovely little town just across the river from Liverpool <3
11. What are your hobbies?
Can I list writing as a hobby, too? I also really like reading, baking and annoying my partner on a daily basis without much effort, lmao.

Nope, but I consider Sammi mine as well as my Grandad's, especially since my Nan passed last year. I think she misses the female company and also know she loves me as much as I love her <3 when we eventually move to a more suitable property, I plan to adopt her and give my Grandad a sort of prolonged respite.

Why Solar in Sydney Is a Good Idea
Solar energy systems are a great way to save money on electricity bills. They can also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and are a renewable source of power. However, it’s important to do your research before purchasing a system.
The STC rebate can significantly lower your upfront costs. In addition, you can sell excess power back to the grid and earn a feed-in tariff.
Costs
Solar in Sydney energy is a clean, renewable and efficient form of power that can help reduce electricity bills. It also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. In Australia, there are a number of rebates and incentives to encourage homeowners to adopt solar energy. These incentives can significantly reduce the cost of a solar system and reduce its payback period.
The price of a solar system is influenced by several factors, including the technology used and the size of the installation. Generally, a 6kW solar panel system costs $5,500 to $8,500. However, you can find many companies that offer affordable and competitive prices.
Some companies even provide a free consultation to ensure you are getting the best value for your money. This is especially true if you’re considering purchasing an offgrid system. Moreover, you can get the most out of your solar system by pairing it with a battery storage solution. This is called a symbiotic system, and it will save you money in the long run.
Eligibility
The NSW government has made solar energy more accessible for households on a low income. Eligible households can apply for a free 3kW solar system, which could save them up to $600 per year – more than twice the amount of the Low Income Household Rebate. This offer is available in the Bayside, Burwood, Campbelltown City, Canterbury-Bankstown, Liverpool City, Macarthur Region, Strathfield Municipal and Sutherland Shire local government areas.
Homeowners can save money and help the environment by switching to solar electrician power in Sydney. Solar power provides a cheaper alternative to electricity from the grid and reduces carbon emissions. In addition, a residential solar power system can increase the value of a property.
Solar energy is a great option for Sydney residents due to the city’s abundant sunshine and generous rebates. However, it is important to understand the energy requirements of your household before installing a solar panel system. Also, it is essential to choose a reliable and accredited retailer that can help you navigate the rebate process.
Installation
Sydney is an ideal place to invest in solar power, thanks to its sunny climate and government incentives. Embracing solar energy can save you money on your electricity bills and minimize environmental impact. It also helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.
Various companies provide solar services and products to help Australians make the switch to renewable energy. These include Beyond Solar, which offers transparency into the world of solar energy and estimates how much a homeowner can expect to save on their electricity bills. Other companies offer solar inverters, which allow homeowners to capture the sun’s rays and convert them into electricity.
Depending on the size of your solar system, you can save up to 30% on your energy costs. You can also sell excess power back to the grid at a lower feed-in tariff rate. To maximize your savings, keep your solar panels clean and free of debris. This includes removing fallen leaves, bird droppings and dust.
Maintenance
Solar power is a renewable energy source that captures the sun’s rays and converts them into electricity. It is an effective method of reducing household electricity bills and offers long-term financial savings. It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions and promotes sustainable living. It can also increase the value of a property.
The efficiency of a solar system can be improved through regular maintenance and cleaning. This includes removing dust and debris from the panels and addressing any shading problems. In addition, a technician can check the inverter for signs of power degradation and make repairs as needed.
Solar energy in Sydney is a great way to reduce electricity bills and save money. It also helps the environment by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering carbon dioxide emissions. It is a great choice for homeowners who want to cut their energy costs and help the world move toward a greener future.

The Benefits of Built-in Wardrobes: A Stylish and Practical Storage Solution
When it comes to optimizing space and organizing your living areas, built-in wardrobes stand out as a stylish and practical storage solution. Whether you are redesigning a bedroom or looking to improve your closet space, built-in wardrobes offer several advantages over traditional standalone options. In this article, we will explore the benefits of built-in wardrobes, focusing on areas like Liverpool NSW, Sydney, and North Sydney, and why choosing a professional Sydney wardrobe company can make all the difference.
What Are Built-in Wardrobes?
Built-in wardrobes are custom-designed storage units that are integrated into the walls of a room. Unlike free-standing wardrobes, they are fitted into the available space, often designed to blend seamlessly with the room's décor. These wardrobes offer a sleek, tidy appearance and can maximize the use of space in smaller areas. In cities like Liverpool NSW, where space can be limited, built-in wardrobes are an ideal solution for keeping your living area organized without sacrificing style.
The Advantages of Built-in Wardrobes
Maximized Space Efficiency
One of the primary benefits of built-in wardrobes is that they utilize the space available in the most efficient way. In areas like Liverpool NSW, where real estate comes at a premium, every square meter counts. Built-in robes in Sydney and surrounding regions, such as North Sydney, allow homeowners to make the most of their room's layout, often incorporating vertical space that standalone wardrobes can't offer.
Customizable Design
Built-in wardrobes can be designed to suit your exact storage needs. Whether you need more shelves, hanging rods, or drawers, a Sydney wardrobe company can help you create a solution that works best for your lifestyle. With the flexibility to choose materials, finishes, and layouts, built-in wardrobes can complement the aesthetic of your home. Whether you're going for a minimalist, modern, or classic design, you can find a style that fits seamlessly with your interior décor.
Increased Property Value
Investing in built-in wardrobes is an excellent way to increase the value of your property. Buyers are often drawn to homes that offer efficient, organized storage solutions, and a well-designed wardrobe can enhance a room’s appeal. If you're planning to sell your home in Sydney, Built In Wardrobes in Liverpool NSW or any other region can be a great selling point. The functionality and sleek design of built-in robes make your property more attractive to potential buyers.
Improved Organization
A major advantage of built-in wardrobes is their ability to keep your items organized. Custom designs allow you to arrange your clothes, shoes, and accessories in a way that suits your needs. This organizational structure can help reduce clutter, making your home feel tidier and more spacious. Whether you live in a small apartment in Liverpool NSW or a larger home in Sydney, having a built-in wardrobe ensures that your clothes and belongings are neatly stored.
Long-Term Durability
Unlike free-standing wardrobes, built-in wardrobes are designed to last. They are often constructed using high-quality materials that can stand up to everyday wear and tear. The investment in a built-in wardrobe is one that pays off over time due to its durability and the long-term benefits it provides in terms of both storage and home value.
Built-in Wardrobes in Liverpool, Sydney, and North Sydney
For residents in Liverpool NSW, as well as those in other parts of Sydney, built-in wardrobes are a popular choice for home renovations. Whether you're upgrading an old wardrobe or designing a new bedroom from scratch, companies specializing in built-in robes in Sydney can help bring your vision to life. Built-in wardrobes in North Sydney, in particular, cater to modern apartment living, where maximizing space is a priority. A Sydney wardrobe company can guide you through the process, from the initial design phase to installation, ensuring that your wardrobe meets your exact specifications.
Conclusion
Built-in wardrobes offer numerous benefits, from maximizing storage space to enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your home. Whether you are in Liverpool NSW, Sydney, or North Sydney, opting for a custom-built wardrobe can transform your living space, offering both functionality and style. By choosing a reputable Sydney wardrobe company, you can ensure a seamless design and installation process that meets your needs. Investing in a built-in wardrobe is not only a practical decision but also a smart way to improve your home’s organization and long-term value.

Understanding Anne Arundel County Property Taxes: Rates and Tips
Tumblr media

Anne Arundel County Property Taxes: What Is Property Tax?
Anne Arundel County is one of the counties in Maryland and is characterized by beautiful views, a vibrant and prosperous population, and a favorable location near Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
Property owners in this area should learn about the property tax system operating within the county to meet their future financial and other obligations. This guide covers a transparent study of Anne Arundel County property taxes regarding assessment mechanisms, payment modes, exemptions, and other additional points to be taken.
Anne Arundel County property taxes is a local government charge for a property or land, such as a building. These taxes pay for essential public services like education, law enforcement, firefighting, and other services, as well as public works and recreation facilities.
In Anne Arundel County, property taxes are calculated based on the extent to which a particular property is valued and taxed.
Understanding the Assessment Process
The property assessment process in Anne Arundel County is done by the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT). It assesses properties to put a value on them, generally to set property taxes in this state agency. Properties are reassessed every three years using three main valuation methods.
Examples include the sales comparison approach, which seeks to analyze the recent selling prices of similar properties; the cost approach, which tries to determine the cost of reconstructing and depreciating the property; and the income approach, which is applicable if the property is rental or commercial.
Residents get an assessment of their current status, and any changes from the previous year are sent to them for care of their properties. These notices are essential for comprehending possible taxes.
Property Tax Rates in Anne Arundel County
Anne Arundel County initially established the minimum property tax rate to be charged per $100. The last known general property tax rate is $0.935 per each one hundred of assessed value.
There is also a base rate that residents from this county will be charged, but some rates can vary with different areas; there may be charges for some services like water and sewer services or enhanced roads. Maryland also has a very low state property tax, usually $0.112 per $100 of assessed value, which then goes to the county tax.
How to Calculate Your Property Tax
The proposed payment is calculated by taking the property assessment given by the SDAT assessment notice and multiplying the evaluation with the total property tax rate, which includes county, State, and any special district rates.
If the total assessment of the property is $300,000 and the total tax rate is 1.047 for every $100 of total assessment, then the annual Liverpool property tax would be arrived at as follows: subtract 100 from the estimated value ($300,000 – 100 = $299,900), divide that by 100 ($299,900 Ă· 100 = $2,999), and multiply by tax rates ($2,999 × 1.047 = $3,141). In this case, the property tax would be $3,141 annually.
Payment Methods and Deadlines
Property taxes in Anne Arundel County are paid once every year, and there are two ways to pay the amount due.
Owner-occupied residential properties are the default for semi-annual payments. The first is payable between July 1 and September 30 of the appropriate fiscal year, and the second is payable by December 31 of the corresponding fiscal year.
However, property owners can pay the sums in full by September 30 of each financial year. Payments may be made through the county's tax website by mail, in person to certain designated offices within the county, or through a mortgage company escrow.
Delinquent property tax means additional costs, such as penalties and interest, besides having tax liens placed on the property.
Exemptions and Credits
The county, too, has several programs through which it can rebate citizens who qualify. The Homestead Tax Credit preserves sustainable homeownership and stabilizes tax bills by restricting asset rise to 2% per taxable year for owner-occupied residences.
Homeowners Property Tax Credit is intended for low and moderate-income individuals and offers credit according to income and home value. Seniors 65 years old or above could be eligible for more tax credits if they have spent many years in the home they own.
Other eligible persons include veterans with disabilities incurred in the military service and persons with permanent disability. Furthermore, the State has offered energy efficiency tax credits for homeowners with energy-efficient solar panels or geothermal heating systems.
Appealing an Assessment
If the assessed value of your foreclosed property is incorrect, you are free to present your case before the SDAT. The beginning step requires a broad view of the assessment notice to know the root cause of the valuation.
Respond to the notice within 45 days demanding a hearing session. If you are called to present evidence, bring items that contain current appraisals, the latest comparability sales, or pictures of the property's current status.
If there is further disagreement, appeals can be made at three levels: the initial hearing before the supervisor, the Property Tax Assessment Appeal Board(PTAAB), and the Maryland Tax Court.
Strategies to Manage Property Taxes
When managing property taxes, always check your assessment notices and make sure they are correct. You should apply for all the available exemptions and credits so that you can care less about your taxes.
Prepaying taxes is a valuable way to plan the timely use of funds and sometimes escape penalties for delays. If your property assessment value seems unreasonable, you must appeal to contest the same.
The Effect of Real Property Taxes on Real Estate
Taxes on properties play a huge role in property prices, home demand, and the all-important issue of housing affordability.
Property taxes help establish the selling prices for homes in specific areas; thus, high property taxes may limit the ability of a particular region to sell homes since most people will be discouraged by the prevailing high property taxes.
To potential consumers, being informed about the property tax is significant in financial planning. Property tax revenue goes to financing local facilities and services, so residents enjoy a better quality of life in Anne Arundel County.

Seizure of $25M Nigerian Properties to Chinese Firm.    The Nigerian Presidency has announced its intention to appeal a British Virgin Islands High Court ruling that granted Chinese firm Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Ltd. the authority to seize $25 million worth of Nigeria's foreign assets. This legal battle originates from a 2007 agreement between Zhongfu, a subsidiary of Zhongshan, and the Ogun State Government to develop a free trade zone. Alleging breach of contract by Ogun State, Zhongfu sought arbitration in London. Arbitration and Legal Ruling A London arbitration panel awarded Zhongshan $70 million in damages, which has since risen to $81 million with interest. The British Virgin Islands court upheld this award, citing the bilateral investment treaty between China and Nigeria as the basis for enforcing the judgment. Chinese Firm Seizes Nigeria’s $57million Jet in Canada as Court Rejects Immunity Claim In August 2024, a French court allowed Zhongshan to seize three Nigerian presidential jets, including an Airbus A330 recently purchased by President Bola Tinubu. While the jets were later released after diplomatic negotiations, Zhongshan has already confiscated two residential properties in Liverpool, UK, which it plans to sell. Government's Reaction Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, confirmed Nigeria’s plan to challenge the ruling, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting national assets. Presidential Jets Seizure: Amosun Also Cancelled My Ogun Contract, Just Like He Did to a Chinese Firm &; Pat Utomi “We will continue to examine all options and take necessary steps to address these legal challenges, ensuring Nigeria’s rights and assets are preserved,” Bwala stated. Mediation Attempts Settlement discussions between Zhongshan and the Ogun State Government were held as recently as September 2023 in London. Despite some initial progress, negotiations collapsed when Zhongshan insisted on full payment of the arbitration debt. According to the Presidency, Zhongshan has since pursued enforcement actions while avoiding further settlement talks. The Ogun State Government maintains its openness to a reasonable resolution. Next Steps The Nigerian government plans to leverage all legal and diplomatic avenues to vacate the judgment and mitigate its impact on the country’s assets. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

A former police detective, who was found to have stolen cocaine from an evidence store after dropping a bag of white powder outside his child's school, has been jailed for 19 years.
Andrew Talbot, who worked for Greater Manchester Police's serious crime division, was found guilty of misconduct in public office and supplying class A drugs last month.
The 54-year-old took almost 4kg of cocaine with a retail value of almost ÂŁ400,000 from storage after it had earlier been seized by officers and he searched police systems for dealers to help him sell the drugs, Liverpool Crown Court heard.
Talbot, who had a cocaine addiction, supplied the stolen drugs to criminals and as a result of his "greed a significant quantity" of cocaine was put back into circulation on the streets of Manchester, said the judge.
Talbot was caught when he accidentally dropped a small bag of the drug outside his daughter's primary school in February 2020.
The school alerted police, and Talbot was arrested after arriving at work with 26.8g of high purity cocaine, as well as smaller amounts which were lower purity, the court heard.
Snap bags and a piece of paper with exhibit references for Operation Cosmetic, which investigated the nationwide supply of cocaine, were found in his car and three bullets were found at his home in Leigh, Greater Manchester.
ames Lake, prosecuting, said: "He accepted when he attended the property store he would take pocketfuls, as much as he could fit in his pockets."
Talbot supplied the drug between 2018 and 2020.
He previously admitted several other charges including possession of cocaine, possession of ammunition without a firearm certificate, theft of cocaine and unauthorised access to computer material.
Talbot was sacked from GMP in August 2024, which the force said was the earliest legal opportunity.
Jennifer Adams, from GMP's anti-corruption unit, said after the sentencing that it was "one of the most shocking cases of corruption uncovered" by her team.
"There is no place in policing for Talbot or anyone else like him who cannot be trusted to uphold the law and keep our streets safe," she said.
"We will continue to relentlessly root out those who are not fit to represent the thousands of hardworking officers who serve the people of Greater Manchester.
"He betrayed his oath to serve the public and instead became a criminal."
Sentencing him on Friday, Judge Neil Flewitt KC said: "As a result of conscientious and dedicated police work, large quantities of Class A drugs were taken off the streets by officers of Greater Manchester Police, many of whom were your colleagues.
"As a result of your addiction and greed a significant quantity of that cocaine was put back into circulation.
"You deceived your colleagues and you betrayed the trust placed in you by them and the community."
The court heard that Talbot conspired with convicted drug dealer Keith Bretherton, 50, to sell the stolen cocaine.
Talbot also provided confidential police information to a friend under investigation for assault and to Bretherton, to help him recover a drug debt worth more than ÂŁ20,000, the court heard.
Talbot had served in the police force for 20 years, and had spent three years in the armed forces.
He became addicted to cocaine after difficulties in his personal life and due to his role in an operation in which Anthony Grainger was shot by armed police in Culcheth, Cheshire.

Becoming an Expert: Using Raman Spectroscopy to Analyse Vaping ‘e-Liquids’ - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/becoming-an-expert-using-raman-spectroscopy-to-analyse-vaping-e-liquids-technology-org/
Becoming an Expert: Using Raman Spectroscopy to Analyse Vaping ‘e-Liquids’ - Technology Org
Since its emergence in the late 2000s, vaping has rapidly grown into a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide.  Originally marketed as a smoking cessation aid that allowed users to keep up the act of smoking while avoiding many of the harmful chemicals from traditional tobacco, the customisability of nicotine content and flavour, among other aspects, led to many adopting the product without being prior smokers.
Paul Richardson is a fourth year PhD student based in the Centre for Metabolomics Research. His PhD is funded by the University of Liverpool and his research focuses on using infrared and Raman spectroscopy to study bacteria at single-cell. His recent work has included analysis of vaping e-liquids via these techniques. Image credit: University of Liverpool
This rapid growth led to a variety of controversies, from concerns about youth nicotine addiction, questions regarding the efficacy as a smoking cessation aid and the safety of the ingredients, to hospitalisations and even deaths resulting from vaping liquids that had been tampered with, to name a few.
Even now, differences in regulations between the UK and other countries can allow less scrupulous vendors to sell products that do not meet restrictions, such as the 1800 vapes recently seized by Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police for being over the 20 mg/mL nicotine limit.
Need for high-throughput analysis of e-liquids
The novelty and need for urgent results led researchers to focus on chromatographic methods, which involve the separation of compounds based on their properties and analysis using extremely sensitive methods like mass spectrometry, to analyse e-liquids.
While these are the most sensitive and precise methods available, they are slow, expensive and require specialists to run, making them poorly suited for high-throughput routine analysis.
Applying Raman spectroscopy
My research focuses on analysing bacteria using non-destructive chemical analysis methods like Raman spectroscopy. Having worked previously at a company that provided mass-spectrometry analysis services of e-liquids, part of my desire to research this area was simply curiosity.  However, Raman also presented a great option as a complementary method – although less sensitive or precise, it is fast, inexpensive, portable and easy to use.
I’ve already published this part of my PhD research in the journal Analyst. Our research showed that, combined with statistical analysis, Raman spectroscopy could quantify the ratio of propylene glycol to glycerol – the two main constituents of e-liquids – and the nicotine commercial samples without diluting or altering the e-liquids in any way.
We were also able to replicate these results by shining the laser through the refill bottles, meaning this analysis could be done without opening the product.  This is potentially useful to both regulatory bodies wanting to spot check products in a store, for example, or for producers wanting a consistent and simple quality assurance tool.  Finally, we discussed the necessary steps to turn this proof of concept into a usable product, highlighting the current technology available to achieve this.
Science from home
While I had thought of the idea for this research a year prior, I started in September 2020, around the time where the growing second wave of COVID risked a return to lockdown.  I was concerned about starting an experiment using bacteria – the main focus of my PhD – that would need to be stopped at a moment’s notice with no results to analyse, and when I pitched the idea to my supervisor Roy Goodacre, he was happy for me to go ahead.  In fact, although the second lockdown never happened, I did take my samples and the Raman instrument home and gathered some spectra in my kitchen over the Christmas holidays!
Future work
My PhD experience has really cemented my desire to stay in academia for the foreseeable future.  The area of research I am interested in lies firmly in analytical chemistry, and I hope to keep learning about the various analytical methods that exist and the data analysis that goes alongside them.  Ideally, I would like to develop accessible analysis tools to monitor food, consumable products, soil, or any other products that need keeping track of (or pique my curiosity).

HS2 Phase 2a Safeguarding Lifted: A New Chapter
Tumblr media
Introduction to the HS2 Phase 2a Safeguarding Lift
In a transformative move, the UK government has announced the lifting of the safeguarding directions for High Speed 2 (HS2) Phase 2a, which covers the route between the West Midlands and Crewe. This significant decision, in line with the Network North command paper from October 2023, marks a critical turning point in the nation's approach to high-speed rail travel and urban development, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and infrastructure growth.
Understanding HS2's Role and Safeguarding Implications
Historically, safeguarding has played an essential role in preserving land for HS2, preventing conflicting developments, and ensuring a clear path for this ambitious project. Local authorities, under these directives, were required to consult with HS2 Ltd for planning applications within the safeguarded areas. The lifting of these directions signals a shift towards greater flexibility in land development, providing certainty and new opportunities for residents and businesses along the route. This strategic move not only simplifies planning processes but also catalyzes potential development, embodying a forward-thinking approach to urban planning and infrastructure expansion.
The Strategic Importance of the Handsacre Connection
Maintaining safeguarding near Handsacre is crucial for integrating HS2 with the West Coast Main Line. This pivotal connection is more than just a link; it's a gateway to faster, more efficient travel across the UK. HS2 trains will seamlessly travel to key northern destinations like Manchester, Liverpool, and Scotland, significantly reducing travel times. For instance, halving the journey time from London to Manchester demonstrates the government's commitment to enhancing national connectivity and easing travel burdens for millions.
Community Impact and Support Scheme Adjustments
The lifting of safeguarding, however, brings significant changes to local communities, particularly in terms of property and land development. To address this, the government is closing certain support schemes, such as the 'Need to Sell' scheme. Furthermore, this tailored approach demonstrates a balanced consideration of both development opportunities and the needs of those still affected by the initial HS2 plans. It's a step towards reconciling past plans with current realities, ensuring that the transition is as smooth and equitable as possible.
HS2 Ltd's Role in Ensuring Clear Communication
In this period of transition, HS2 Ltd is proactively reaching out to property owners affected by the changes. HS2 Ltd actively communicates these changes, ensuring individuals fully understand the new landscape and are well-informed about their options. Such transparency and direct engagement are essential in building trust and clarity amidst significant infrastructural changes.
Future Prospects: Phase 2b and Northern Powerhouse Rail
The government's vision extends beyond the current changes. The upcoming modifications for Phase 2b, slated to accommodate Northern Powerhouse Rail, reflect an ongoing commitment to creating a cohesive and efficient transportation network across the North. This forward-looking approach underscores the government's dedication to not just immediate improvements but also long-term infrastructural resilience and connectivity.
Streamlining HS2's Footprint: Property Disposal Plans
Separate from the safeguarding decision, in addition, plans to dispose of properties no longer needed for HS2 indicate a strategic approach to resource management. This process will ensure that the HS2 project remains lean and focused, ultimately freeing up resources and opportunities for other developmental activities.
Promoting Transparency and Accessibility
In a move towards greater transparency, furthermore, the government is depositing crucial HS2 documents in the libraries of both Houses. This action not only allows public access and scrutiny but also reinforces the government's commitment to openness and accountability in its handling of major infrastructure projects.   Embracing a New Era in Infrastructure and Development The lifting of the HS2 Phase 2a safeguarding directions opens a new chapter in the UK's infrastructure and urban development story. It promises not only enhanced travel efficiencies but also a plethora of new opportunities for growth and development, heralding a future of improved connectivity and vibrant regional development.   Sources: THX News, Department for Transport & The Rt Hon Mark Harper MP. Chinese Investors to Sell Nigeria's Guest Houses in Liverpool on eBay for $2.2 Million.   A Chinese investment firm, Zhongshang Fucheng Industrial Investment Ltd, is set to sell two residential properties in Liverpool, United Kingdom, that it confiscated from the Nigerian government. The sale is part of efforts to recover up to $70 million in arbitration awards following a 2021 court ruling.   The properties, located at 15 Aigburth Hall Road and Beech Lodge, 49 Calderstones Road, were seized by Zhongshang in June 2024 after Nigeria failed to settle the arbitration judgement. Breaking: Three Nigerian Presidential Jets Seized by Chinese Firm   The 2021 ruling awarded Zhongshang $55.7 million plus interest and legal costs after a dispute with Ogun State over a free trade zone agreement. The firm claimed that its rights were unlawfully rescinded by the Nigerian state in 2016, violating a 2001 trade treaty between Nigeria and China.   A December 2021 British court order gave Zhongshang the authority to seize Nigerian assets in the UK to recover the outstanding payment, which continues to accrue monthly interest. The company has now decided to list the properties for sale on eBay, with an asking price of $2.2 million for both. Chinese Firm Zhongshan Frees One Seized Nigerian Presidential Jet for Tinubu’s France Visit in ‘Goodwill Gesture   "The value of both properties is estimated to be around $2.2 million, and we've planned to sell them through online platforms like eBay, which might attract buyers more quickly," a consultant working with Zhongshang told Peoples Gazette under anonymity.   The seized properties were not classified as Nigerian diplomatic or consular assets, which allowed the court to authorize their confiscation. According to a June 2024 ruling by Master Lisa Sullivan of the UK High Court, King’s Bench Division, the properties were being used for commercial purposes, making them ineligible for state immunity protection.   The case has added to Nigeria's ongoing legal challenges, following a recent arbitration battle where the country narrowly avoided a $11 billion payout to P&ID after allegations of bribery and corruption. Unlike the P&ID case, the Zhongshang dispute has seen European courts uphold enforcement orders against Nigerian assets in multiple countries.   Zhongshang has pledged to conduct the sale transparently, acknowledging the high public interest in Nigeria regarding the matter. The proceeds from the sale will go towards satisfying the arbitration award until the full amount is recovered.   The situation has once again highlighted Nigeria's vulnerability in international arbitration disputes and the potential consequences of not adhering to treaty obligations.
