Atlus' beloved Persona series continues to dominate the RPG scene, with Sega Sammy's recent earnings report revealing a staggering 5.06 million copies sold in fiscal year 2023 (April 2023 - March 2024). This impressive feat marks a significant milestone for the franchise, solidifying its position as a powerhouse within the JRPG genre. This article dives deep into Persona's recent sales success, explores the potential reasons behind this surge in popularity, and unveils exciting rumors surrounding the highly anticipated next installment, Persona 6. Persona Series Hits Persona Sales Outperform Expectations in FY2023 The 5.06 million copies sold by the Persona franchise in FY2023 is a testament to its enduring appeal. This number encompasses both digital and physical sales, showcasing the diverse audience the series has cultivated. This robust performance surpasses expectations and positions Persona as a major revenue driver for Sega Sammy. For comparison, Sega's other prominent franchises also performed admirably during the same period. The iconic Sonic series raked in 5.92 million copies, while the action-RPG franchise Like a Dragon (including the Judgment games) reached 5.36 million copies sold. However, Persona's impressive sales figures solidify it as a top contender within Sega's vast portfolio. Factors Fueling Persona's Sales Boom Several factors are likely contributing to Persona's recent sales explosion. Here are some key contributors: Remakes and Remasters: The strategic release of remakes and remasters, such as Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, has reintroduced these beloved titles to a new generation of gamers while reigniting the passion of veteran fans. These re-releases provide a more accessible entry point for newcomers and allow seasoned players to revisit these classics with enhanced visuals and gameplay mechanics. Expanded Availability: The franchise's expansion onto new platforms like the Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles has significantly increased its reach. This broader accessibility allows players who previously couldn't experience Persona titles to now join the vibrant community. Critical Acclaim and Awards Recognition: Persona games consistently receive critical acclaim for their compelling narratives, stylish visuals, and innovative gameplay mechanics. This positive reception from reviewers and industry publications has undoubtedly sparked interest and encouraged more gamers to delve into the world of Personas. Strong Community Engagement: The Persona series boasts a dedicated and passionate fanbase. This community actively engages in online discussions, creates fan art and cosplay, and keeps the franchise's popularity alive. This enthusiastic base attracts new players who are drawn to the series' vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Persona 6: Rumors and Anticipation While Atlus hasn't officially confirmed the existence of Persona 6, rumors swirling around the internet suggest it's currently in development. According to these speculations, Persona 6 might embrace the color green as its thematic core, contrasting with the previous entries' use of red (Persona 5), yellow (Persona 4), and blue (Persona 3). This potential shift in color palette could hint at a new narrative direction and fresh gameplay elements. Furthermore, rumors suggest that Sega aims to transform Persona, alongside Like a Dragon and Sonic, into annual franchises. This strategic move could potentially lead to a more consistent influx of new Persona titles, further satiating the fans' hunger for fresh adventures within this beloved universe. Frequently Asked Questions: Q: How many copies of Persona games were sold in FY2023? A: Persona games sold a staggering 5.06 million copies in FY2023 (April 2023 - March 2024). SEGA president claims Sonic Frontiers sold 3.5 million units worldwide, becoming best-selling 3D title in franchise history
Tumblr media
The hedgehog's latest title, Sonic Frontiers, apparently cleared another major milestone, if the words of the publisher's co-chief operating officer were anything to go by.
In a joint press conference with Rovio Entertainment last Tuesday, SEGASammy transmedia president Shuji Utsumi claimed that the open-zone game sold a worldwide total of 3.5 million copies.
If officialized by SEGA, it is widely expected that Frontiers will surpass Sonic Heroes to become the best-selling 3D-based title in the franchise's history, according to the last officially-disclosed sales data after 2007.
vimeo
Even though the sales figure was said by a senior executive at SEGA, the number has yet to be corroborated by the parent company. In late April, SEGA Sammy Holdings officially disclosed to investors that the open-zone game distributed over 3.2 million copies, which contributed to a record-high of 8.1 million full game units sold for the Blue Blur.
Tumblr media
The news came at a time when the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise enjoyed renewed success through its vast transmedia portfolio. At the press conference, held at Rovio's home turf in Helsinki, Finland, Utsumi touted Sonic's continued presence through merchandising, animation, and community building; and mused similar, potential developments with Rovio's Angry Birds property.
Tails' Channel reached out to SEGA Sammy Holdings for additional comment.

TMS Entertainment, a beloved Japanese animation studio currently owned by Sega Holdings Inc., a subsidiary of SegaSammy holdings, has just announced that for their 60th anniversary, they’ll begin uploading special animated features of significant importance to the company to their official YouTube page. Most noteworthy to Sega/Sonic fans, this includes the first six episodes of Sonic X in its original Japanese dub. The entire campaign begins on August 5th, 2024. This is a good chance to get a taste of what Sonic X was originally like, free of both English voices and the cacophony of censorship edits imposed on it in its original English dub by 4Kids Entertainment
Gotta go fast as you rush past the break for the skinny on this special event. GO! GO! GO! GO! LET’S GO!
Tumblr media
As stated above, Sonic will be the one to kick off TMS Entertainment’s 60th anniversary celebration on August 5th. On that day, at noon EST, 9AM PST, they will upload episode 1: The Supersonic Hero Takes The Stage, in its original Japanese format with English subtitles. On August 6th, episode 2 will follow, then episode 3 on August 7th, and so on, but episode 6 will come on August 12th instead of August 10th. Strangely, their schedule says they will upload episode 5 again on August 13th-16th. Based on this, it’s possible each episode besides episode 5 will only be online for one day, so just in case, make time to catch each episode on the upload date.
Fortunately, TMS has already provided links to episodes 1-5 on YouTube. You can go to each and click the “Notify Me” button to have YouTube send you a notification for when each episode will premiere. Here are the embeds to each episode.

As for the rest of the 60th anniversary event, TMS will also be uploading episode 1 of Big X (The studio’s very first anime from August 3rd 1964, based on the Osamu Tezuka manga), Super Dimension Century Orguss episodes 1-10, and the Takeshi Koike directed Lupin III movie trilogy, consisting of Jigen’s Gravestone, Goemon’s Blood Spray, and Fujiko’s Lie. Go to TMS Entertainment’s 60th anniversary celebration news page for the details and schedule on all anime being presented.
TMS Entertainment has been the animation studio for many beloved anime throughout the decades. They are most associated with long running franchises such as Lupin III, Detective Conan (Known in the west as Case Closed), as well as several anime based on Sega franchises, not just including Sonic X, but also Virtua Fighter, Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, and Phantasy Star Online II: The Animation. They also animated the FMV cutscenes in Burning Rangers. Besides anime, they also had a hand in animating several western cartoons, including Inspector Gadget, Cybersix, The Real Ghostbusters, Batman: The Animated Series, Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Currently, they are working on popular anime such as Undead Unluck and Dr. Stone.
TMS Entertainment’s official YouTube page currently hosts trailers, clips, and full episodes of many anime they have produced throughout their long history. In same cases, they have the entire series of some of their anime available to view absolute free, including Karate Master (1973), Cat’s Eye (1983), Magic Knight Rayearth (1994) (Along with its Brazilian Portuguese dub), Virtua Fighter (1995) (As well as its Spanish dub), Itazura na Kiss (2008), Lupin III Part 2 (1977), Lupin III Part 4 (2015), and the English dub of Sonic X (Season 1) (Season 2) (Season 3) (Plus, the Brazilian Portuguese dub, surprisingly). They are gradually uploading episodes of The Gutsy Frog (1972), Yowamushi Pedal Grande Road (2013), Saint Seiya: The Lost Canvas (2009), and Z/X Ignition (2014). They are also, as of this writing, in the middle of an ongoing Lupin III celebration in which they upload a feature-length Lupin III TV special every month, with this current month’s pick being Tokyo Crisis (1998). They’re a channel worth following if you love watching all kinds of anime, no matter its age.
So will you be catching these uploads of Japanese Sonic X? Are there any TMS animated productions you’re a particular fan of? Give us a holler in the comments section before.
And remember, if you like Sonic X in Japanese, the entire series has been made available on Blu-Ray courtesy of Discotek Media. (Who also blessed us with complete Blu-Ray releases of Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, Virtua Fighter, and The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog)

Why isn't Sega Overprotective of its Intellectual Property?
Why isn't Sega Overprotective of its Intellectual Property?https://youtu.be/IwTXCwqurNQ (47 minute video)
Sega is actually very protective of its IP† (such as fan port of Persona, and historically, abusing trademark law for copy protection purposes on the Genesis), but purposefully overlook Sonic fan works to garner goodwill as a front of Sammy's less reputable and stronger pachinko and pachislot business.
That home gaming only made up a small part of SegaSammy's revenue also led to the neglect that caused several years of weak Sonic games, until the company refocused on home gaming with a series of acquisitions. Even when combined with the arcade game business, home gaming still plays second fiddle to pachinko and pachislot, until the pandemic happened and nobody's out gambling.
Moreover, the loose enforcement of Sonic IP almost allowed Ken Penders to walk away with it all.
† "Intellectual Property" is an umbrella term covering copyright, trademarks, patents, trade secrets and more. There are usually separate laws with very different rules for each. The term "Intellectual Property" makes it too easy to conflate between copyright, trademarks, and patents. ‡ However, it's sometimes useful to discuss them as a group.
‡ Not an approval of the author's neckbeardism.

SEGA of Japan on Sonic Frontiers: There will be “No compromise in terms of quality”
Tumblr media
In a recent Q&A with investors, SEGA’s parent company, SEGASammy, gave more details on the Sonic series, with a special focus on the upcoming mainline game, Sonic Frontiers.
SEGASammy confirmed that they are targeting the upcoming game to go beyond the first year sales numbers of Sonic Forces, the previous mainline title, which has managed to reportedly sell over a million copies in 2018, with the game now with over 7 million copies sold. In terms of lifetime sales, they aim for a further increase in the numbers.
It was also reassured by the Japanese corporation that Frontiers won’t have issues in regards to quality, even with it posing many challenges, as it is the first time ever the hedgehog has been placed in an open world environment.
“We’d like for you to wait future announcement for the details, but this is a title with no compromise in terms of quality and that has taken on many new challenges.”
-SEGASammy
In order to assure the quality control, SEGASammy also commented that the game has been under extensive game testing, with different people all over the world being invited to playtest the game.
“We have been steadily conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before release, such as introducing game testing based on external evaluations, and I have a feeling that it will become a good game and have high expectations for it.”
-SEGASammy
SEGASammy commented on there also being a possible change in their pricing strategy, as the previous mainline Sonic games usually went for $40 dollars, something the series has been doing as early as 2013 with Sonic Lost World, and also seen with Sonic Forces. Using Sonic Frontiers as an example, the company believed that it is important to up the suggested retail price in order to go in line with the aimed budget.
And even though SEGASammy said that Sonic has been very profitable, with it reaching “tens of billions of yen on a retail sales price basis” in Western markets, it still has challenges to face in the Asian markets, including Japan, in which the Sonic series has been known for not performing to expectations. The company intends to focus their efforts in Japan over 2022 with the release of Sonic Frontiers, as was the case for Forces in mainland China in 2017.

Sonic the Hedgehog series sells over 6 million copies in latest SEGA quarterly report
Tumblr media
With new releases like Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Origins in the latest financial quarterly report from SEGA, the Sonic the Hedgehog series once more has found its way to the top spot.
Sonic is once more at the top
As of the third quarter of fiscal year 2023, the Sonic game series accumulated a total of 6.7 million units to this point, up by roughly four million compared to the previous quarter. When compared to the numbers from the same period last fiscal period, the current year beats the previous by an additional 1.8 million units.
Tumblr media
The most noteworthy performance is that of Sonic's latest release, Sonic Frontiers, that sold 2.9 million units up until the last day of 2022. It's believed that titles like Sonic Origins and Sonic Colours: Ultimate also helped with these numbers.
Pachinko Slots and Entertainment bringing more numbers
SEGASammy has also commented that their Entertainment and Resort divisions will very likely to remain at the same performance level as the previous forecast, but the Pachislot and Pachinko Machines divisions are likely to trend upward in operating income.
In terms of the immediate Consumer division at SEGA (like, full packaged games and free-to-play apps): although the sale of some new titles and repeat titles have been lower than expected, operating income is expected to be generally at the same level as the previous forecast due to strong sales of new game titles such as Sonic Frontiers and free-to-play titles.
