Shalom. The thought of this week of my book Healing Anger is "Although being punctual, considerate, patient, and honest are admirable character traits that we are obligated to acquire, it is unreasonable to expect that every person we come into contact with is blessed with them. We must understand that we all have weaknesses that we need to work on, so we can’t expect perfection in someone else’s behavior before we have perfected our own. This thought process will help us be patient with their faults and avoid anger." Buy my book at http://www.feldheim.com/healing-anger.html If you want to buy it from me in Israel let me know. This article based on the teaching of R' Yissachar Frand. You have the opportunity to share in the mitzvah to honor a loved one by sponsoring my weekly review, or refua shelema (healing), shiduch, Atzlacha (success). To join the over 4,000 recipients in English and Spanish and receive these insights free on a weekly email, feedback, comments, which has been all around the world, or if you know any other Jew who is interested in receiving these insights weekly, contact me. Shabbat Shalom. BO-Dogs Will be Rewarded in the World to Come? Chazal tell us[1] that Rav Yishaya fasted for 85 days because he could not understand a certain paradoxical interpretation of a teaching of our Sages.
Rav Yishaya was bothered by a teaching that in the World-to-Come, dogs will lead in singing the praises of the Almighty. They will say to all the other creatures “Come! Let us prostrate ourselves and bow, let us kneel before G-d, our Maker” [2]. Throughout classical Jewish literature dogs are called “brazen creatures” [See Yeshaya 56:11] and are portrayed as the most insolent of animals. How could it be, Rav Yishaya wondered, that this very same creature will merit to lead in the singing of praises to G-d in the World-to-Come? The Yalkut Shimoni says that an angel came down from Heaven and told Rav Yishaya to stop fasting. The Divine messenger told him that he would never find a satisfying answer to what was bothering him. It was a Heavenly decree that this is what is going to happen. The fact that dogs would merit saying Shirah (songs of praise before G-d) in the World-to-Come was a secret revealed only to the prophet Chabakuk.
The angel told Rav Yishaya that since he was a disciple of Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, in honor of his teacher he would give him the explanation of this paradox: The merit by which dogs will be able to lead the Shirah is by virtue of the pasuk [3] “ But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog whet his tongue...” The fact that they kept quiet during the plague of the firstborn, earned them the right to lead the Shirah in the future world.
Rav Mordechai Ezrachi in his sefer Birkat Mordechai writes that the praise of keeping quiet involves more than merely not speaking slander or gossip. The dogs did not earn this merit by not speaking lashon Hara. They simply kept their mouths closed. Dogs are known for their middah of chutzpah [impudence]. Therefore, keeping quiet represented the ultimate defeat of their negative character traits (shevirat hamidot). This showed the ultimate self-improvement for that creature. How can we apply this Chazal to us? A person that keeps his mouth shut saves himself from troubles. It is a significant accomplishment when a person who is an az nefesh [the midda of arrogance] and likes to use his mouth inappropriately, overcomes that characteristic and is quiet. Such an accomplishment is deserving of special reward.
In my book 'Healing Anger' I noted that Hashem considers all the circumstances surrounding a person’s actions when He allots reward and punishment. A person’s passion or distaste for a sin as well as his joy or reluctance in doing a mitzvah are all taken into account. G-d judges each person in relation to his specific nature; a person prone to anger by nature will be judged less harshly if he succumbs to a fit of anger than a person who is by nature calm. Likewise, someone with a predisposition towards anger receives more reward for controlling his anger than a person with a calm disposition. The dog's song is that of “Come! Let us prostrate ourselves and bow, let us kneel before G-d, our Maker.” We won’t act with impudence and insolence. We will bow down and display servitude. The dogs turned their nature around by keeping their mouths closed. It took tremendous power and self-control to accomplish such a change. [Interestingly, the Torah says that if a Jew has a piece a non-kosher meat, he should "throw it to the dogs"[4]. The Midrash explains that dogs are singled out for non-kosher meat as a special reward in this world for not disturbing the Jewish Exodus. We see that even in this world they are rewarded].
The lesson for us is that it is not always necessary to say something. It is not always necessary to comment. It is not always necessary to have a remark. A case in point to illustrate this: People who personally knew the Alter of Slabodka (Rav Nosson Zvi Finkel [1849-1927]) testified that there was no one who was as big a ‘dabran’ [talker] and simultaneously as big a ‘shaskan’ [silent one] as the Alter. He was not the type of person who always kept his mouth closed. He had hundreds of disciples and he talked to them frequently. But he knew when to talk to them and when to be quiet, what to say and what not to say. It takes great wisdom to know when not to speak and what not to speak. Another important lesson is that sometimes we may mistakenly think that Hashem does not pay attention to His creatures. We have seen that even dogs will receive rightful reward for their behavior, more the so every human being who is created in His Divine image, should know with absolute certainty that we will receive our reward for every single good deed and for every word we say. People tend to underestimate the significance of their actions and thoughts. Our lives are so significant that every move is witnessed by our Creator; we should never consider ourselves unimportant beings whose actions or misdeeds are ignored or forgotten.
Dogs kept quiet during the plague of the firstborn and merited the privilege of singing Shirah in the future World-to-Come as a result of their silence and also got a reward in this world. __________________________________ [1] Yalkut Shimoni Shemot 11:187 [2] Tehillim 95:6 [3] Shemot 11:7 [4] lbid 22:30

bs'd Shalom. __________________________________ [1] Yalkut Shimoni Shemot 11:187 [2] Tehillim 95:6 [3] Shemot 11:7 [4] ldem 22:30 Le Iluy Nishmat Eliahu ben Simja, Perla bat Simja,Yitzjak ben Perla, Shlomo Moshe ben Abraham, Elimelej David ben Jaya Bayla, Abraham Meir ben Lea, Gil ben Abraham.
