The Environmental Impact of Ford Wreckers in the Auto Industry
The automotive industry has seen a significant shift towards sustainable and environmentally responsible practices in recent years. One aspect of this movement is the use of Ford Wreckers Geelong, which plays a crucial role in recycling and repurposing materials from end-of-life vehicles. In this blog post, we'll explore the environmental impact of Ford wreckers in the auto industry, shedding light on their contributions to sustainability and ecological preservation.
Understanding Ford Wreckers
Ford wreckers, also known as auto wreckers or dismantlers, specialise in salvaging valuable components and materials from Ford vehicles that are no longer in use. These operations are essential in ensuring that end-of-life vehicles are responsibly and efficiently processed, mitigating the environmental impact associated with automotive waste.
Recycling and Resource Recovery
One of the most significant environmental benefits of Ford wreckers is their role in recycling and resource recovery. When vehicles reach the end of their useful lives, wreckers carefully dismantle them, extracting recyclable materials such as metal, plastic, glass, and rubber. By salvaging and repurposing these materials, Ford wreckers contribute to reducing the demand for virgin resources and minimising the environmental footprint of automotive manufacturing.
Waste Reduction and Landfill Diversion
The disposal of end-of-life vehicles poses a significant challenge in terms of waste management and landfill usage. Ford wreckers play a pivotal role in reducing the volume of automotive waste that ends up in landfills. By salvaging usable parts and materials, wreckers divert a substantial amount of waste from disposal sites, thereby mitigating the potential environmental hazards associated with automotive waste accumulation.
Energy and Emissions Reduction
The recycling and repurposing of materials through Ford Wreckers Geelong also yield energy and emissions reduction benefits. Reprocessing salvaged materials requires less energy compared to producing new materials from raw resources. Additionally, by reducing the need for new manufacturing processes, Ford wreckers contribute to lower emissions and a decreased carbon footprint associated with the production of automotive components.
Tumblr media
Promotion of Circular Economy Practices
The operations of Ford wreckers align with the principles of a circular economy, where materials and resources are kept in use for as long as possible through recycling, refurbishment, and utilisation. By salvaging and reintroducing components and materials into the supply chain, Ford wreckers actively contribute to maintaining the value of resources and prolonging their usefulness, promoting a more sustainable approach to automotive resource management.
Hazardous Waste Management
End-of-life vehicles often contain hazardous substances such as lead-acid batteries, mercury switches, and refrigerants. Ford wreckers are equipped to handle and dispose of these hazardous materials safely and responsibly, preventing potential environmental contamination and public health risks. This crucial aspect of their operations ensures that hazardous waste from decommissioned vehicles is managed in compliance with environmental regulations.
Collaboration with Extended Producer Responsibility
In many regions, Ford wreckers collaborate with automotive manufacturers and government authorities as part of extended producer responsibility (EPR) programs. These programs establish clear guidelines and incentives for manufacturers and stakeholders to take responsibility for the entire lifecycle of automotive products, including their eventual disposal. Ford wreckers actively participate in EPR initiatives, furthering their commitment to sustainable waste management practices.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Ford wreckers Geelong play a vital role in shaping a more sustainable and environmentally-responsible auto industry. Through recycling, waste reduction, energy savings, circular economy promotion, hazardous waste management, and collaboration with EPR programs, Ford wreckers contribute to mitigating the environmental impact of end-of-life vehicles. As the automotive industry continues to prioritise sustainable practices, the role of Ford Wreckers in advancing environmental stewardship remains indispensable.
The positive environmental outcomes stemming from the operations of Ford wreckers underscore their significance in driving towards a more sustainable, circular, and ecologically-conscious automotive sector. Their contributions exemplify the potential for environmental responsibility within the auto industry, setting a precedent for progressive and sustainable waste management practices.

Life update lightning round:
Parkoured my way out of avoiding all strains of COVID so far, which could be attributed to the jabs but also my recent revelation that people, as an overall species, are quite gross
However -
A recent battery of tests has identified two new things: A growth the size of a lemon in my uterus, and a cluster of Tarlov cysts in my spine - both of which, i’m figuring due to their relative positions, contribute to the escalating-no-good-very-ow lower back pain over the last two years and the reason why i’m now waking up several times a night and taking ten minutes to turn over while smothering my face to muffle the cries
I’m waiting for a gynae-oncologist appointment to deal with the squatter (and something else that’s popped up in the last week that either means my medication has failed or the machine’s breaking down), but almost no one in the world specialises in the cysts, least of all in Australia, so (I-don’t-know noise)
One housemate out, another housemate in. We’re still tight with the previous one, though haven’t seen her that often what with (broadly gestures). New houso is a paramedic ten years our junior, give or take, with a Tenterfield Terrier in tow who is deeply obsessed with my pug
Honey is my entire world now and neither of us would have it any other way. Even when she’s being a little shit and having a tantrum because another dog took her toy or she thinks a kookaburra is laughing at her. She is sweet and stubborn and snuggly and mine
There’s a bit of talk among my circle of going to Florida in 2023 and taking up a timeshare two of them have up there, but that, ofc, is a moving target and i’m also trying to get play money saved up for Foo Fighters 2022. We’ll see, we’ll talk
I went down to Geelong with some trepidation because I knew NarcyFoo would also be there and I didn’t know how our once-mutual friends were going to receive me showing up. I didn’t see her and thankfully didn’t have to. I did, however, run into a few from that little crew and it was...fine. "Don’t mention the war” fine. Civil - even kind of friendly - but for the most part pretending nothing had happened. I suppose it’s too much to expect now that they’d pull me aside to get my perspective, and I accept that as well as what I assume is their approach of recognising that we’re both still going to participate in shows/tours and there needs to be a degree of separation if it’s going to continue being an enjoyable experience for everyone. I wouldn’t want to take that from them, and I would hope they’re considerate enough to feel the same
I...co-moderated Dave Grohl’s latest AMA?
I went to a preview screening of Studio 666?
I was on the band’s guest list for Geelong?
How in the chicken fried fuck is this happening?

EPISODE 1: Sam Veenbaas: Don’t Die Wondering.
At the base of Mount Youngal, a stones throw from the Murray River and about a days ride from Melbourne, the valley of Bunroy drips the frost from it's awnings and creaks with the morning sun. It's the middle of July and it's a colder cold than you've ever been. Around 30 free souls call this little valley home; including the greasy fingernails and Locky Lennard curls belonging to our mate Sammy Veenbaas. He's at a turning point in his life, a fork in the road, about to sign a deal with the Devil. On the one hand is stability and a monotonous 9-5 slaving away to the man, and on the other is freedom, stress, hardship and bloody good times. Such is life when all you want to do is bring old pieces of steel out of their slumber. But we all know that, that's why we're addicted to the smell of old oil, rat shit and sleezy centrefolds. This new deal with the Devil I'm referring to is a new business venture; shaking off the shackles. But lets leave that shit be for a minute and travel down the two lane blacktop to figure out where it all started for Sam.
Tumblr media
Hobo: Tell us about growing up mate.
Sam: Being born in Wodonga, growing up in the small town of Finley, NSW, we left there at the age of 3.5 and moved permanently to Wodonga, VIC. Living in Wodonga for over 20 years I thought I would get out and go visit the place they call ‘Gods Country’, at the foot of the snowy mountains in a small valley named Bunroy, about 25mins out of the town Corryong.
Hobo: Do you think life would be better or worse if you stayed there up until now?
Sam: Its been a turn for the better, that’s for sure. Living at the end of the line, no other properties after us, you don’t get to many visitors or passing by traffic. Its been a good way to clear the mind, figure out what I want in life and save some dollars to god knows what to do with.
Tumblr media
Hobo: Tell us about building the Fairlane.
Sam:  The old brown turd is a 1959 Ford Fairlane/Galaxie. It’s a two door hardtop from the states. Imported in about 2015. I bought it stock, a two tone red over white, with a little 223 inline 6 cylinder in it.
I picked it up in Geelong, off an old fella that had imported several cars from the states and didn’t have the time do get to them all, the day we picked it up we took it back to my cousins Hotrod and Custom shop in Coburg. Straight away I started stripping it, replacing bushes, pulling parts off it and getting it ready for paint. We painted it in a two day turn around, strip, rub back, mask up and paint. Was a rough job that was only meant for 12 months until I saved up for a proper paint job, but it’s been over four years now and it’s still there.
I was on my P plates and the little 6 was good, but I soon got sick of that. I ended up buying a Clevo and FMX auto to drop in, pulled the little 6 out, cleaned the engine bay, painted it and dropped the Clevo in.
I’ve slowly been doing it up. Little things here and there trying to get it to where I want it. My favourite mod so far would probably have to be my ‘Shag-pile’ roof line, it always gets compliments and makes people smile.
Tumblr media
Hobo: Did you ever want to do anything else besides work on cars or bikes?
Sam: I’ve been working on cars and bikes since I could walk or hold a tool. My old man was a big-time bike and car fella. I’d spend every night out in the shed with dad while mum was working late as a nurse. Weekends would consist of either working on something or driving around picking up parts or looking for new projects to buy. I honestly cannot remember ever thinking about doing anything else, it was a part of me, in my blood to work on cars and bikes. It keeps me sane.
Hobo: What have you got going on at the moment?
Sam: I’ve always got my Fairlane on the go; it’s one of those things that will never be ‘finished’. I’m always buying parts for it, coming up with new ideas and wanting to change something that I have already done to it.
I’m also currently helping my twin brother do a quick build of his ’73 iron head. It was a teardown, clean up, re-gasket, few new parts and full rewire. We also made a new king and queen seat and sissy bar for it. It got a new tins and fresh paint job while we went at it. We’re super close to finishing it and are both excited to see how it turns out.
Tumblr media
I’ve got my Harley, but it’s just a rider and park, wanting to keep it pretty stock for now.
Hobo: Do you have a favourite part of working on cars and bikes?
Sam: Nah, if I had to pick one thing, it would have to be the electrical work. Wiring is my go to. I believe it has a bit of an art to it; keeping it tidy, while making it work and most practical for your car or bike.
Hobo: Why do you think people do this shit, build things when they could just buy parts off a shelf?
Sam: I reckon half the reason comes down to quality, while also wanting to be able to say “I built that” in 30 years time when you’re still driving/riding it down the road and someone asks ‘where did you get that’. You also get that sense of accomplishment when you finish something and think, that thing is rad.
Hobo: Why is crafting things by hand so important?
Sam: I believe everyone has different skills. I think more people should ‘just give it a go’. Most of the time you can’t really wreck anything and if you do, just start again.
Making things by hand allows you to design it to your style, how you want it and to make it fit perfectly the first time you know? How many times have we bought parts off the internet or from the local auto parts store to find out we then have to modify it anyway?
Tumblr media
Hobo: What motto do you live by?
Sam: My old man always told us as kids, ‘Don’t Die Wondering’. That has always been the motto that I live by. You want something? Get it. You want to do something? Do it. Life’s to short to not do what you want to, who knows what’s coming around the next corner.
Hobo: What’s next for you?
Sam: Apart from my recent business venture (Veenbaas Mechanical), I am currently looking at a Pre Unit Triumph that’s for sale, pretty well sold on it but is proving difficult to go buy with all these restrictions going on in Victoria and not able to travel. If all goes well this will hopefully be my next project. After seeing Jimmy Staig’s green Pre Unit at the Boogaloo Invitational in 2017, I had to have one. Fast forward 3 years and my good buddy Luke Wallace’s Blue Pre Unit has sold me on them, in my opinion one of the most perfectly executed Triumph choppers I have seen.
Thanks for the time Sam. One of a dying breed; a gentleman and a good bloke. And that shag pile roof lining is absolutely ace. Cheers!

Only days until the spirit officially invites Geelong home
Rebecca MacDonald / October 21 2022 The countdown has begun for the Tasmanian spirit to officially sail to its new home in Geelong. Ferries are currently sailing into the Port of Melbourne, but that will change this weekend. The first ferry will dock at Koryo Kwai on Sunday morning, although locals have seen Spirit sail the local waters at times in recent months. Spirit of Tasmania II also tested dock-mounted automatic docking units in August. Geelong Mayor Peter Morehi will be on the ferry when it sails into town. He said the move would be a game changer for Geelong. “The business opportunities that will bring to the area, the number of visitors to Geelong itself, whether they are out of spirit and before they ascend into spirit,” said KR Morehi. “This is a really important opportunity for the region, and we should be very excited about it.” Image: image file [Geelong Broadcasters] Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Borrowed the new #deus2 from Luckystrike in Geelong recently to try at the beach. After this hunt I took it out for a ring recovery job and though unsuccessful we were very surprised at the salt water stability and depth compared to the Nox - it was very interesting to try and at some times I was getting targets over 1ft down with ease. The 20 meter waterproof rating is really comforting too. I had to make some minor temporary changes to the shaft as seen above but otherwise it’s quite decent. So You’re Telling me North is a Chance?
NORTH Melbourne are very much the outsider at the unlucky (for some) odds of $13 head-to-head as the Kangaroos make the trip down the highway to take on Geelong this Sunday.
The Kangaroos are currently 0-4 sitting bottom of the ladder with a measly percentage of just 43.0% and are short-priced favourites to take out this year’s wooden spoon at $1.35 for least wins in our AFL futures market.
GMHBA Stadium does not hold good memories for the Kangas, when they last played there in Round 21, 2019 their final score was 1-8 (14) which would be the lowest in the club’s proud history.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The @NMFCOfficial have taken #RetroRound to a whole new level. The Kangaroos broke their 89-year record for lowest score in club history … kicking just 1.8.14 against @GeelongCats. https://t.co/MuvSSufG1V #AFL #AFLCatsNorth

— ABC SPORT (@abcsport) August 10, 2019
When it comes to the prospect of an upset on Sunday, the odds are literally stacked against the Kangaroos.
With the Cats $1.03 favourites, the line has been set at +56.5, it seems as though not even the most optimistic Punter has any faith that the bottom of the ladder Kangaroos will put up a fight.
Not even Lloyd Christmas himself doesn’t give North a chance.
via GIPHY
However, North Melbourne’s outsider odds against the Cats are far from the biggest we’ve seen in Ladbrokes Australian history.
GWS holds the honour of being the pre-match biggest outsider since Ladbrokes launched in Australia back in 2013.
Facing a rampaging dynasty-bound/eventual premiers Hawthorn in Round 8 of that season down in Launceston, The Giants opened at a record $34 head to head price and a whopping +94.5 underdog at the line.
youtube
While the Giants did lose the game, they actually covered the massive +94.5 line that day with Hawthorn beating a young GWS team by 83 points.
Our biggest outsider upset was back in Round 18, 2018 when the Gold Coast Suns upset the Sydney Swans by 18 points at the SCG.
Swans $1.02 Suns $17.00 -/+ 63.5#AFLSwansSuns
— Ladbrokes.com.au (@ladbrokescomau) July 21, 2018
Prior to the match, the Suns were $17 in the head to head – one of the biggest outsiders to win and a +63.5 underdog at the line.
As the Swans got out to a 29-point lead at quarter time, the Suns went out to $151 in our live market.
That was one of the biggest upsets in recent memory. The Suns got out to as much as $151 when they were down by 29 points at quarter time.#AFLSwansSuns
— Ladbrokes.com.au (@ladbrokescomau) July 21, 2018
While no punters were game enough to take the Suns at $151, two Ladbrokes punters (who were either Gold Coast true believers or just had an intuition that today could be the day the Suns broke their 11 game losing streak) backed them pre-game at:
$100 for the Gold Coast Suns to win by 20-29 @ $126 and $50 for the Gold Coast Suns to win by more than 15.5 @ $101.00
As for backing North Melbourne on Sunday, upsets can happen, but as the song says there’s a fine LINE between pleasure and pain.
FOR THE RECORD – LADBROKES BIGGEST AFL OUTSIDERS

Anxiety - when calming down is not a option
Tumblr media
Did you recognize that anxiety disorders are thought to impact almost 3 times the variety of people suffering with major clinical depression? Thinking about that 350 million individuals around the world are struggling with depression, that creates a great impact of individuals! Nevertheless, anxiety problems are typically under-recognised, and may be mis-diagnosed, as they often co-occur with depressive problems, substance abuse or in individuals with numerous conditions.
All of us have worries in life, however if you have experienced the results of a continual episode of stress and anxiety, after that you will know the distinction in between anxiousness as well as stressing. Worrying may transpire as a result of a particular situation, but if you have actually popularized stress and anxiety condition, you really feel distressed exceedingly as well as usually, as well as not necessarily as a result of a scenario
Stress decrease is feasible, when you target certain nutrients in your diet plan.
Geelong Nutritional Expert Adrian Rock from Living Holistic Wellness explains this in even more information.
SOURCES OF STRESS AND ANXIETY
Your anxiety may arise from medicines or nutraceuticals, medical conditions, or details life situations. It's been lately discovered that hereditary polymorphisms, (like MTHFR), or our mind chemical aspects may contribute, potentially together with behavioral as well as developmental elements. Your digestive tract health could be causing your anxiety also, as a recent research of Australian IBS patients located that 47% of IBS patients met the screening standards for an anxiety medical diagnosis. If you have any type of problems with regularly reduced blood glucose control, (known as hypoglycemia), this may additionally be a trigger for anxiousness.
MTHFR is a location of hereditary research showing links to many facets of health and wellness.
Stress, anxiousness, clinical depression, the inability to conceive, and also hormonal agent imbalances are simply a few of the locations examined. MTHFR genetic concerns may be significantly helped with nutrition.
Geelong Nutritional Expert Adrian Rock from Living Holistic Health talks more on this.
YOUR MIND IS SHRINKING
Whatever the cause, the impact of anxiety on the brain, causes the brain to alter from its typical form. Too much stress and anxiety causes the release of excess glutamate, (a mind chemical), which after that kills mind connections, compeling the brain to remodel. You may see the effects listed below.
This "brain-shrinkage" happens most plainly in a part of your emotional mind called the hippocampus. This part of your mind is responsible for happiness and decision making, around psychological memory. As your hippocampus diminishes, one more part of your emotional brain enlarges, called the amygdala. Your amygdala is the part of your brain in charge of worry and concern.
So, when you are constantly over-stressed and nervous, your hippocampus is shrinking, as well as your amygdala is expanding. The 'joy and also decision-making' part of your mind is smaller sized and also much less dominant, as well as the 'fear and also fretting' part of your mind is bigger and supervises of your thoughts. Which's what we indicate by 'mind remodelling'. You may see a layout of this effect below.
LACTIC ACID

aweigh anchors! The cruise ships are ready to return in the summer
The cruise ships will return to Koryo Bay this summer For the first time since the beginning of the epidemic. Six ships have closed visits to Geelong over the coming months, including three cruise lines that had never included stops in Geelong before. More than 7,600 passengers and crew are expected to arrive ashore between January 1 and February 13, providing an estimated $1.65 million in revenue increase in local coffers. All six ships will dock in Koryo Bay, where Geelong Yacht Club will provide assistance to bring passengers ashore. Geelong Tourism and Bellarin CEO Brett Inci said many of the ships will make their first visits. “We are really excited to welcome Viking Neptune and Viking Mars to the region, but we also welcome our passengers from Seaborne and Seven Seas,” he said. The Viking Neptune is set to launch next month, which means it will be one of the world’s newest cruise ships when it arrives at Corio Bay. Viking Mars was launched in May 2022. The cruise ships’ return to local waters coincides with the commencement of Geelong Tasmania services this weekend by Spirit of Tasmania, replacing the previous service in Melbourne. Geelong Mayor Peter Morehi said Geelong’s tourism industry is beginning to emerge from a particularly difficult time. “It’s very promising to see the return of these cruise lines to Geelong, and some of them will come from as far away as America,” said Cree Morehi. Mr. Insi said the tour operators will ensure that cruise guests make the most of their time in the area. “We look forward to seeing the ships in the Gulf again and welcoming thousands of passengers ashore to enjoy the exceptional products and experiences that our region has to offer. “There is a real buzz among the industry regarding Spirit of Tasmania, the return of cruise ships to our bay and what we anticipate will be the biggest summer we’ve seen in recent years.” Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

Would anyone be interested in some comparison clips? - - - - - - - #metaldetecting #equinox #metaldetectingaustralia #equinox800 #dirtfishing #dirtfishingaustralia #beachdetecting #minelab #minelabfind #minelabdetecting #1 #treasure #australia #finds #relics #old #metals #oldschool #vintage #nox #coinhunting #oldcoins #coincollecting #fishingaus #australia #silver #detector #goldring #deus #deus - © Justin H 2022 // Assignments or licences can be purchased by contacting me through private messages. ‘It’s only in the last 10 years that same sex couples have been legally allowed to be on the birth certificate, and to get married and adopt. We’re at a moment of huge legal change, brought about by people who’ve rallied for it forever. For the most part, rainbow families are happy to educate people, but we’re weary too,’ says Mia. Photographer Mia Mala Macdonald and illustrator Steph Hughes are feeling thankful for their rambling Preston rental, which they moved into just weeks before social isolation came into effect. It’s near the creek and has a big backyard that’s already sparked a love affair with gardening in their three-year-old daughter Sidney.
At their previous unit in Pascoe Vale, their next-door-neighbour used to wish them good morning every day without fail. She’d speak in Italian to Sidney, and offer fruit from her garden. She was elderly and had dementia and every morning, without fail, she’d look from Mia to Steph and ask: “Sisters?”
Australia had a plebiscite for marriage equality less than three years ago. It’s mind-blowing how recent that is, and how hurtful it must have been, and must still be. It was part of the reason Mia started Once in a Lullaby, her upcoming book of portraits of rainbow families living their lives, existing without justification, in the hope that it will help people feel like they belong. Especially kids of rainbow families, like Sidney.
If you’re in a position to help support her Pozible campaign to print the thing, run, don’t walk.
Hey Mia + Steph – How are you balancing work/parenting/isolating at the moment?
Mia Mala McDonald: We’ve always spent equal time working and being with Sidney. That was a priority from the get-go. We each have a part-time salary, which combines to make one workable income as a team. We keep our overheads low, because we want to share the parenting responsibilities.
Steph Hughes: Since isolation kicked in, I’ve had some illustrating jobs for people’s passion projects that they’ve finally gotten around to. It’s an interesting bunch of things. I set an alarm for 4.45am and work then.
I wake up then too! But just from anxiety. No alarm necessary.
SH: (Laughing) anxiety is definitely a huge motivator for me. It’s stressful out there! But we’re trying to keep a lid on it for the kid, and ourselves.
MM: Parenting and work doesn’t leave much time for me to ponder what the current crisis all means. By the time I’ve made the snack and found the missing pink boot Sid wants to wear, and the matching dress at the bottom of the washing basket, that’s half the day done. I’m distracted by the demands of parenting, in a good way.
You both seem relatively sane. What’s your secret?
SH: I’m giving myself a hall pass on screen time for Sid. That helps. Things are crazy, so no rules on that. If I’m going on hour six of playing hide and seek one-on-one, then yeah, let’s do a massive screen time session! I’m trying to get in my body more, worry less. We go down to the creek every day. I may have unsuccessfully tried to do a late night jazzercise class on YouTube. Just stuff that gets me out of my head.
Did you say late night jazzercise? Tell me more.
SH: Maybe it was kind of kick boxing that involved dancing? It was very loud. Look, it’s a confusing time. We are all off our heads. May as well get fit!
What were some of the feelings that came up for you when shooting your upcoming book about rainbow families, ‘Once in a Lullaby’?
SH: It made me really grateful for our situation, and aware of how smoothly things went for us when we decided we wanted to have a kid.
MM: We didn’t realise how uncomplicated our parenting journey was. We asked a friend of ours to be the donor during a casual conversation over the phone. And he’s very much involved in our life and Sid’s life. Logistically, it’s been far from complicated, and the most wonderful thing is that we have this incredible new extended family who we love and who all love Sidney.
What were some of the more complicated circumstances you came across?
MM: The journey for two dads is often extremely complicated, around 10 years duration and usually very costly, because political and financial support is so limited. Male couples want to be parents like everyone else, but the hoops they have to jump through are extreme.
The families allowed me into their homes and shared really personal, and at times, deeply emotional and intimate stories with me. You meet these people and you feel such an affinity with them. There’s so much camaraderie. We’re a rainbow family in a heterosexual world, but it’s a comfort to know we’re not the only ones. We’re trying to figure out how we fit, and we’re doing it together. It’s a special feeling.
Every kids’ show I’ve seen has two hetero parents. Have you found any alternatives?
MM: There are some books about rainbow families, but they’re almost like text books. They explain our existence and that we’re “normal” too, but that’s about the extent of it. I’d throw this suggestion to the team at Peppa Pig, we’d love to see a single parent, or a couple of lesbians at the BBQ. Incidental lesbians! Not a story about their family unit and how they had a kid, too.
SH: Sometimes it’s tricky to be different. And I know that from growing up. I wish I had more references to help me understand why things were a bit different for me.
MM: Rainbow families don’t expect to be represented in every possible spot there is, because it doesn’t reflect society. Living in the inner city of Melbourne, there’s usually a rainbow family on every street. We’re part of the texture. We’re so lucky to live in this city and we know how privileged we are to live in a country where our personal life is not illegal. We’re still a minority, but no representation doesn’t reflect our community, and that can be frustrating, particularly when you’re a parent. Sidney started having those conversations with us at two years old. It’s a difference she’s very aware of.
Have you had to do a lot of explaining since becoming parents?
MM: People think it’s okay to ask us how we had Sidney, and who “the real mum” is. That’s honestly one of the mildest questions we get. We had to do a lot of explaining throughout the pregnancy, every time we were at the hospital, for instance. It’s only in the last 10 years that same sex couples have been legally allowed to be on the birth certificate, and to get married and adopt. We’re at a moment of huge legal change, brought about by people who’ve rallied for it forever. For the most part, rainbow families are happy to educate people, but we’re weary too.
We’re just like any other parents, trying not to forget the sunscreen and the signed excursion forms. We’re doing the best we can and learning as we go.
Straight people don’t just need to educate themselves, we need to educate others too. Like if your family member is saying ignorant or hurtful things at the dinner table, even if they are “not meaning to offend”, we need to say something.
SH: The arsehole at the dinner table is a real archetype. But it takes big people to do that. It’s amazing when it happens. We always appreciate it.
Sidney (looks up from Peppa Pig): Why do you have hairy legs, mama?
SH: Why do you have hairy legs?
Family Favourites
Housebound activity?
Planting seeds, playing Magnetix and hide-and-seek. Hugely popular activities right now!
Breakfast ritual?
Sid wakes up at 5.30am, so our morning ritual is trying to get Sid to watch a show so we can go back to bed. Fails every time. Coffee and toast, always.
Go-to album?
Lucinda Williams ‘World Without Tears’ without doubt.
Date night in?
I think we have a laugh and a beverage most nights. It’s bit hard to delineate between a date night and regular night at the moment. Sometimes we try to cook something non-gross together, and that’s always lovely.
Weekend getaway (remember those)?
We love regular trips and have been missing them – we often go to Mia’s hometown of Yandoit and her family’s house. We also go to stay with our friends Shauny and Bex in Rye which has been a lovely tradition springing up. Recently there’s been some gigs in Rye, Castlemaine, Geelong and Ballarat and we always make good weekends out of those.
Check out Mia’s Pozible campaign for Once in a Lullaby, which aims to raise enough funding to cover printing costs, and follow Steph and Mia on Instagram @_steph_hughes_ and @miamalamcdonald.

COVID-19, Festivals, Film and where we’re at
Tumblr media
It’s a concerning time for the Australian industry with a number of Film Festivals cancelling or postponing events and indeed calling off Festivals mid-run. Filmmakers, Festivals, musicians, cinemas, visual artists and venue operators are but some of the pillars of the arts community already significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic which has spread uncertainty across industries and communities worldwide.
This afternoon’s announcement of the Sydney Film Festival’s cancellation, for the first time in the Festival’s history, may not be a shock but lands as another major blow to Australia’s cultural scene. The Festival, like many others, are offering returns or replacement tickets for future screenings in light of restrictions on public gatherings whereby major Festivals’ events cannot continue.
At the time of writing, the directive from the Federal Government to limit non-essential gatherings to 500 people has been updated to restrict non-essential gatherings to 100 persons in indoor areas. Cinemas including Dendy, Palace, the Hayden Orpheum and the Golden Age among others are advising patrons of precautionary measures taken including implementing social distancing, limiting the capacity of theatres, ensuring visitors sit seats apart, regular cleaning taking place and hygiene options such as hand sanitisers that are available on sites.
Looking to another avenue, film collective Static Vision, which recently ran the successful weekend-long Hyperlinks iteration in Sydney, are featuring a free six hour live stream Festival of curated features and shorts called Lockdown on March 27 where you are invited to “self-isolate with us.”
We’ve already seen the very evident impact of these steps, social distancing and preventative measures taken by individuals on film and Film Festivals with many finding cause to cancel screenings. In the case of Dark Mofo the event’s founder made it bluntly clear that the 2020 run had to be cancelled to ensure, from a financial perspective, that the venture remains viable and that programs can proceed in the future; a challenge now widely facing arts organisers. It is also a quandary for many whether immediately forthcoming events are financially viable given prospective turnout, with cinemas and screening venues seeking direction from the Federal Government in order to prepare for the coming months and adequately advise employees many of whom, alike artists and filmmakers, rely on casual or non-permanent work. It remains to be seen to what extent arts institutions and artists will be provided economic support via prospective Federal and State stimulus or relief measures.
The Melbourne Queer Film Festival (which this year ran in conjunction with the Melbourne International Youth Film Festival) suspended the remainder of its 2020 program from March 16, including the Victorian regional tour. The Festival had previously been scheduled to run in Melbourne from March 12-23.
Sunset Cinema North Sydney, which was scheduled to run until March 21, cancelled its remaining screenings from March 16. FlickerFest has cancelled an upcoming March Gold Coast appearance with Dead End Film Festival cancelling a forthcoming March event in Melbourne. Brisbane Openair Cinemas have too cancelled the Festival’s remaining March events, with Moonlight Cinema, who are not running their forthcoming March screenings in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane, set to resume in November.
The Queer Screen – Mardi Gras Film Festival has postponed its March tour to Parramatta (Sydney), Lismore, Newcastle and Mount Victoria, which was set to take place from March 20. The Whyalla Film Festival has postponed its March event while the Geelong Pride Film Festival, Bendigo Queer Film Festival and Benalla Shorts have postponed their April runs.
The Gold Coast and Cradle Mountain Film Festivals, scheduled for April, have been cancelled. Underground Cinema has postponed its Melbourne event, scheduled for April, until June-July.
Festivals which have cancelled shortly forthcoming events and maintained scheduled events post-May 2020 include Revelation Film Festival and Australia’s Silent Film Festival. Festivals across the country are maintaining their scheduling for events several months ahead as the situation develops with the Children’s International Film Festival, having cancelled an upcoming March event, postponing CHIFF’s May runs in Melbourne and Sydney to July 25 onward.
The Caloundra Film Festival has brought its anticipated March 31st screening of Honeyland forward to March 18 in case, in the Festival’s words, “the whole world… is in lockdown by the 31st and we don’t want you to miss it.”
The Independent Cinemas Association (ICA) also announced its annual conference, scheduled to take place in May, has been postponed until May 2021. Netflix, Disney and many other major production companies including Australian stalwarts have halted production while major cinemas releases such as No Time to Die, F9, Mulan and Black Widow have been postponed.
Significantly, Universal have brought up the home release schedules for The Invisible Man & Emma to this Friday, films that are still in the cinema release window. Disney+ has also now released Frozen 2 ahead of schedule. Many have been agitating for a change to limit the length of time following which a film can be released for home entertainment or streaming following a theatrical release, a move which cinemas have strongly resisted. With film releases via online forums being moved up, a move which other studios will follow, it is unclear if once the prevailing situation eases if and to what extent there will be a return to the status quo.
It is evident that many in the coming months will look to streaming as distributors will too potentially seek to feature titles that might not have appeared on streaming platforms, or otherwise make them available via these services much earlier than would normally have been the case. Those production companies looking for Awards consideration in the coming year may too seek these avenues in order to qualify, while direct sales to streaming services altogether bypassing cinemas, amidst the prospect of traditional international Festival markets not operating as regular, could soon increase.
Importantly, Film Festivals worldwide have looked to create virtual markets to ensure sales can go ahead, with such a market being planned pending an announcement on Cannes’ viability. International Festivals have too looked to maintain their plaudits, allowing for awards contenders to be streamed to judges.
It’s a difficult time; be kind to each other and if it brings any sense of joy or relief, watch a movie and better yet, if you can, enjoy it with someone else until we’re all out and about proper again.
