Ensuring Safety Excellence: A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing the Right Security Guard Company in Vancouver

In the bustling city of Vancouver, where safety is a top priority, choosing the right security guard company is crucial for businesses and individuals alike. This comprehensive guide aims to simplify the process, ensuring you make an informed decision that aligns with your specific needs and priorities.
Why is Security Important?
Before diving into the guide, let's understand the significance of security. Whether you're a business owner, property manager, or an event organizer, maintaining a secure environment is essential to protect assets, people, and information. A reliable security guard company plays a pivotal role in achieving this goal.
Key Considerations for Choosing a Security Guard Company:
1. Licensed and Accredited:
Ensure the security company is licensed and accredited by relevant authorities. This guarantees that they meet the necessary standards and regulations, giving you peace of mind.
2. Experience Matters:
Look for a company with a proven track record in providing security services. Experience brings a level of expertise and reliability that is invaluable in safeguarding your property.
3. Customized Security Solutions:
Every business or individual has unique security needs. A good security company will tailor their services to meet your specific requirements. Whether it's patrolling, access control, or event security, the company should adapt to your situation.
4. Trained and Professional Staff:
The effectiveness of a security team relies on the training and professionalism of its members. Ensure that the guards employed by the company are well-trained, licensed, and equipped to handle various situations professionally.
5. Technology Integration:
Modern security goes beyond manpower. A forward-thinking security company should incorporate technology such as surveillance cameras, access control systems, and alarm systems to enhance overall security.
6. Transparent Pricing:
Be wary of hidden fees. A reputable security guard company will provide transparent pricing, outlining the costs associated with their services. This transparency helps you budget effectively without any surprises.
7. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
The experiences of others can be a valuable insight. Look for client reviews and testimonials to gauge the satisfaction level of previous customers. Positive feedback is a strong indicator of a reliable and trustworthy security company.
8. 24/7 Availability:
Security concerns can arise at any time. Choose a company that offers 24/7 availability to ensure prompt response and assistance whenever you need it.
Conclusion:
Selecting the right security guard company in Vancouver is a crucial decision that requires careful consideration. By prioritizing licensed, experienced, and customer-focused providers, you can enhance the safety of your property or event. Remember, security is an investment in peace of mind, and with the right company, you can ensure safety excellence for yourself and those under your care.

The Prince's Heart
You used to spend your summers in Camelot, making quite the little troublemaking trio with Arthur and Morgana as children. After the collapse of your father's kingdom years later, you flee to Camelot for refuge. Having both grown into adults since your last meeting, the old friendly feelings between you and Arthur have shifted into something different. Neither you nor Arthur have an easy life. You both need stability and security, but are you able to provide that for one another, or do you simply bring more turmoil to each other's lives?

Chapter 1
As the trees thinned and Camelot came into view, relief washed over you. Less than half a day’s ride left. You were practically delirious. It had been five days and you had struggled to sleep. When your father had been slaughtered, you knew the war had been won. The five guards who had been with you had managed to smuggle you out of the city. Only three remained and one had ridden ahead to send word of your arrival.
It had been years since you had visited Camelot. Your father and Uther had been close friends and political allies as their kingdoms neighboured each other and you had therefore often spent many months at a time in his court. It pained you to return under such circumstances. The childhood innocence you had possessed on your last visit was long gone and you despised having to turn to your father’s friend in desperation and need of protection. But your kingdom was no longer yours. It had been conquered, and you would have been tortured and killed had you remained.
~~~
You almost began to cry when Uther greeted you at the palace gates. He helped you down from your horse and caught you in strong, fatherly arms. “Lady [y/n],” he greeted, holding your hands in his, “I am so terribly sorry for the hardships you have faced. Your father was a great man. Have no doubt that your residency in my court is my privilege to provide for as many years as you desire it.” “Thank you.” You managed, allowing yourself to finally drop your guard now that you were safely inside Camelot’s walls. “Come, I will escort you to your rooms.” Uther asserted, taking your weight and guiding you inside.
~~~
You slept for a long time. You felt much improved when you awoke in a large, soft, warm bed. It was dark, except for the warm glow of the fire crackling away in the hearth opposite your bed. Finally, you allowed a few tears to escape you. Your father was not a good man, but you had hoped to bring prosperity to your kingdom once you became queen. Despite your desires, you had not wanted him gone so soon. You were simply not ready to rule, but it still stung that even the opportunity to rule had been taken from you. You hugged your knees to your chest and allowed yourself to sob until you could cry no more and you had exhausted yourself once more, falling into another deep yet troubled sleep.
~~~
When you awoke again, it was morning. The sun was still low in the sky and it was quiet. The fire had burnt out and there was a slight chill in the air, although it was sufficiently warm beneath your duvet, a luxury you had taken for granted before having to flee the comfort of your home.
A young woman entered your room quietly, carrying a basket of firewood in one arm and a tray bearing a carafe and goblet in the other. “Oh, pardon me, Lady [y/n]” the woman began when she noticed you, “I didn’t expect you to be awake so early.” She apologised. “It’s no bother at all.” You reassured, sitting upright and readjusting the duvet so that it still covered you and kept you warm. “I’m glad of the company.” She smiled at you sadly. “I’m so terribly sorry to hear what you have endured.” She commented, setting down the tray and the basket. “Thank you.” You replied numbly as she began to arrange the logs in the fireplace. “I’m Gwen, by the way,” she divulged as she struck a match and lowered it to the logs. “I’m the Lady Morgana’s handmaid, but I’m looking after you until someone can be assigned permanently.” She explained, the fire catching quickly. “Thank you, Gwen.” You thanked, feeling as though it was impossible to convey your gratitude to her for the simple act of lighting you a fire. She poured you some water and handed it to you. Forgetting your manners, you drained the cup. It had been a long time since you had tasted water that you hadn’t had to boil first. Gwen refilled your cup immediately. “I can bring you some breakfast if you’d like?” She suggested, noticing your stomach rumbling as, in quenching your thirst, your body had remembered one of its other requirements for survival. “Yes please.” You replied apologetically. You felt guilty having her running around after you, but it was also extremely comforting, knowing that you were not on your own any more.
~~~
You breakfasted, you bathed, and you dressed in a gown which the Lady Morgana had gifted to you. You had fled your kingdom in such a hurry that multiple dresses was the least of your concerns. You sat a while in front of the fire, vowing to never take comfortable and reliable warmth for granted again, but were interrupted by a knock at the door.
“[y/n]” the Lady Morgana greeted, flinging her arms around you in a tight embrace. “Morgana,” you greeter in return, hugging her equally as tightly. It had been years since you had last seen on e another, but you still considered her one of your truest and oldest friends. You had sent many letters back and forth in those years, however, therefore you had never truly lost contact with her. “I was devastated to hear about your situation.” Morgana confessed, stepping into your room. “I cannot tell you how glad I was when Uther told me that you had come to us and had arrived safely. I’ve been pestering Gwen all morning to inform me as soon as you were up so that I could come to see you.” “I’m glad you came,” you confessed, leading her over to your sofa “Your company has never failed to bring me joy.”
~~~
You spent the day with Morgana. You wandered around the city and the castle, visiting all of your favourite spots which you used to frequent, and chatting all the while. Her company truly brought you so much comfort and you began to feel somewhat at home in Camelot.
Your initial few days in the city consisted of long daily walks with your friend and dinner with her and Uther in the evening. They did all they could to make you feel welcome and secure, and you seemed to slot perfectly into their dynamic. The only person missing as Arthur, who had been out hunting since the day before you arrived and was due back any day now. In the past, yourself, Morgana and Arthur had formed quite the little trio and would cause much mischief in Camelot, and you longed for his return which you felt would make you feel completely settled.
~~~
Four days after your arrival in Camelot, Arthur returned. You were preparing for sleep when an urgent knock at your door startled you. You hurried over and were ambushed by a tight hug from your old friend. Neither of you had to say anything, the strength with which he held you conveyed his deepest sympathies and the tightness with which you gripped to him with in return conveyed every emotion you had felt in the past week.
Finally, Arthur released you from his arms. He looked different, older. Obviously he had aged in the years since you had last seen him, but he looked like a man now. He was tall and well-built, his shoulders had broadened and the visible hair on his chest beneath his tunic in combination with the slight shadow of stubble on his chin made him appear more manly than the mischievous boy you had left him as years ago.
Observing how your friend had changed since last you saw him, you suddenly became conscious of how you had grown from a girl into a woman. It was the first time you had really felt aware of the fullness of your breasts and hips, worrying that Arthur would notice how your nightgown did little to conceal your womanly curves.
“You’re not a little girl any more.” Arthur stated, leaning against your doorframe and crossing his arms across his chest. “Keen observation.” You quipped, appreciating how easy you still found it to jest with him. “Want to raid the kitchens for a midnight feast, for old time’s sake?” He asked, as if testing whether you still possessed your youthful mischief. “Prince Arthur of Camelot, you are quite the little troublemaker.” You chastised playfully, grabbing a cloak from where it hung beside the door and ushering him into the corridor.
~~~
“Wow.” Was all Arthur could manage over his half-eaten plate of bread and cheese. You had recounted your journey to Camelot, including your own skilful swordsmanship and killing of half a dozen soldiers. “I don’t think I could have done it unless I had to.” You admitted, setting your plate down beside where you were sitting on the worktop. “You always did manage to beat me when we would spar as children.” Arthur mused begrudgingly. You laughed a little. “Before all of this happened, what did you get up to?” He asked, quickly changing the subject to something a little lighter. Arthur hadn’t realised how much he really had missed you, but also noted that you had changed so much in the years since he had last seen you. “I paint, mainly. I still like to train and fight, but my father wouldn’t allow it once I came of age so I had to train by myself whenever I could slip away. I spent most of my time down by the river when I wasn’t needed in counsel.” “It sounds nice.” He replied. “It was, for the most part. I suppose I took it for granted. What about you?” “I don’t get too much free time if I’m honest. I train and hunt and appear in counsel and that’s about it.” You sat in comfortable silence for a while before Arthur continued, “maybe that will change now that you’re back, we could do with some change around here.” You smiled one of your first genuinely warm smiles in weeks in response.
I think there must have fairly recently been a specific terrorist threat against BC Ferries that wasn't made public.
Last week I took my mum up to Gibsons for a few days as a birthday treat. Gibsons is only accessible via ferry from Horseshoe Bay (in West Vancouver, BC) to Langdale, BC (just down the road from Gibsons). When we were at Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal last Sunday, there was a K-9 unit. The dog was sniffing all around the parked cars waiting to drive onto the ferry when it arrived. We found the sight unusual, but went about our day.
On Wednesday we were parked at Langdale ferry terminal waiting to return to Vancouver, and there was a different man with a different dog doing the same thing. Now, Horseshoe Bay is a big terminal, but Langdale is small potatoes. So we were VERY surprised. Our car was one of the last parked, and the man soon took a break to drink from a water bottle. He had a collapsible bowl for his dog and put some water in there too. Since he didn't seem to be doing anything in particiular, my mum and I (careful not to get too close to a working dog) asked if he was with the RCMP.
The handler didn't seem in any particular hurry. He explained he and his dog work for one of the big private security companies, and a few months ago the Company got the contract for security at all BC Ferries terminals. Even more curiously, his dog wasn't trained to sniff for drugs (as we'd assumed), but for EXPLOSIVES. He said there were specialist explosives sniffer dogs and handlers at all terminals now.
He also said that the other day, his dog had given the signal about a particular car, and become very excited about the trunk of the car. The handler had gotten the car's owner to open the trunk and unpack the suitcase his dog had zeroed in on through the metal. It turned out the driver had a heart condition and was on heart meds which include glycerin. So the clever dog had sniffed out the glycerin, which is often used as a major component in explosives, as well as having respectable usage in healthcare and soapmaking.
So she was definitely a specialist explosives sniffer dog, but I can't think of any public threats to BC Ferries. WHich suggests there was a threat, but it didn't get as far as the media. BC Ferries wouldn't go to all the trouble and expense of having explosives dogs and their handlers at every terminal for no reason. The contract must be costing BC Ferries a fortune.
The handler also said he's local, but some of the units are brought in by the security Company from other Western Canadian cities, because they didn't have enough here to fulfil the contract. Surely the security guard is passing on the cost of relocating these people and dogs to the client.
Also, I've been travelling via BC Ferries on and off since 1987, when I was a child and my family moved to Vancouver. Never seen that at a ferry terminal before. Certainly never seen that on both legs of a trip.
I really, really hope nobody manages to blow up a ferry. There would be massive loss of life, especially if it were at sea at the time. Even a smallish car bomb could blow a hole in the hull and the entire ferry might easily sink before the staff managed to get the passengers into lifeboats and launch the lifeboats.
I've seen drug sniffer dogs at Vancouver Airport before. And I've seen armed soldiers with working dogs at the central train stations in Paris, Barcelona, and Madrid. I've never seen a bomb dog here in Vancouver, that I know of. I've seen police working dogs and not known their specialty before. I've sure as HELL never seen a bomb dog at quiet little Langdale ferry terminal before.
"PRISONER IS USED AS CHIEF WITNESS AT GAMBLING RAID," Vancouver Sun. October 8, 1912. Page 4. --- Captain Anderson, of Patrol Boat, With James Anderson Under Arrest, Accepts Invitation to Chuck-a-Luck. ---- AH FAT IS FACED BY THREE CHARGES ---- Trio of Chinese and Fifteen White Patrons to Appear in Court Today. ---- One of the most successful and exciting raids on Chinese gambling houses conducted by officers of the Vancouver police department was effected by Deputy Chief Mulhern, Inspector Jackson, MeRae, McLennan and Captain Charles Anderson, of the police boat Patrol, on the premises of 10 1-2 Market alley yesterday afternoon. Fifteen white men and two Orientals were landed at the police station charged with gambling.
This raid was the second that Captain Anderson had figured in as one of the chief actors yesterday, both, from a police point of view, leaving very little to be desired. Earlier in the afternoon the skipper had been sent to arrest James Johnson, who is wanted on a serious charge and whom Anderson secured after several hours work.
Bringing his prisoner down through Chinatown, the officer was accosted by an energetic chink. Ah Fat, by name, and asked if he would not care to tackle the goddess of chance by indulging in a little chuck-a-luck. Scenting some excitement, the captain agreed, taking his prisoner along as witness, entered the joint.
Faces Three Charges Ah Fat soon got down to business and started to separate the constable from his hard earned coin, with decidedly disastrous results for himself, for, as he reached over with covetous hand, Captain Anderson seized him, and dragged him bodily by the collar to his side of the table. Once over, Ah Fat realized that resistance was useless, attempted to bribe Captain Anderson with a ten-dollar bill.
Nothing loth to add another charge to that already against Ah Fat, the captain accepted the tender, and now upon the police records are three charges: first, of soliciting for a gambling house; second, of running a gambling game; and third, of bribing a police officer.
This is the first time on record that the keeper of such a resort has been confronted with so many charges and such a curious situation, that of a fellow prisoner testifying against him as a witness, and the police confidently state that it will be some time before Ah Fat has a chance at another game.
Somewhat later in the afternoon it was decided to again intervene in the lucrative business maintained in Chinatown, and Captain Anderson, accompanied by two other officers, with Deputy Chief Mulhern bringing up in the rear with a squad of officers, marched down to Market alley. Once inside, the officers started to woo the fickle goddess, and in a very few minutes had secured sufficient evidence to warrant arresting the place, which move Captain Anderson started by grasping Hong Ying, the dealer, by the wrist and securely handcuffing him to the bars of his cage.
White Men and Yellow. Hong Ying secured and the raid started; pandemonium reigned and the various fifteen white men contained in the narrow chamber surged back and forth between the two doors in an effort to escape. Both doors were guarded by the police. Suddenly the lights were extinguished. The constables awaiting outside used their axes energetically on the doors, and soon gained admission. The gamblers, with their hands pointed skyward, were escorted one by one to the police patrol waiting outside, and in company with varied collection of gambling instruments and other paraphernalia, were taken to the city prison.
Long Berg, gathered in by Inspector McRae, was booked as keeper, in company with Hong Ying. Both Chinamen were released on $200 bail, while the onlookers and players were released on $25 bail each. Their cases will be called before Magistrate Shaw in police court this morning.
Vancouver, Canada: Organized Crime. Public fraud and robbery. Sole proprietorship. Assets are US$230 million.
In Canadian courts, is it more important for a judge to sign a judgment order, or for a security company to amend and sign an execution order? Fraud syndicate: deceive court security: tampering with, forging judgment orders, robbing huge amounts of property (Court Order Execution Act), Royal Canadian Mounted Police, "Don't look at the evidence, don't look at the judgment order", just look at the execution order of the security company, Royal Canadian Mounted Police The police said: (This is a civil case, legal, nothing illegal, refuse to call the police and file a case)
Our company re-identified Canada as a major fraud and robbery case. I concluded: The police were not wrong? Were the court security guards not at fault? Is the Property Rights Bureau not at fault? It’s all our company’s fault and we shouldn’t believe that: Canada is a country governed by the rule of law? Shouldn’t I immigrate to Canada by investment? Shouldn't I send money to Canada? Canada is a terrorist country with extremely chaotic justice, open fraud and robbery, and social lawlessness.
He put people’s lives at risk with dozens of phoney calls that unleashed coronavirus chaos at a seniors care home: prosecutor
The 28-year-old North Vancouver man guilty of one count of conveying a false message with intent to alarm a seniors’ care home actually made 63 malicious crank calls to four managers, six nurses and two administrators early in the pandemic.
Crown prosecutor Lara Sarbit told a Provincial Court sentencing hearing on today that Taymour Aghtai was motivated by “his own entertainment” March 7-8, 2020, after public health officials declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Lynn Valley Care Centre. Aghtai pleaded guilty in December 2021 for pretending to be a B.C. Centre for Disease Control employee who ordered the facility to lock down and send staff home. Sarbit said Aghtai even falsely told at least one employee that she had contracted the virus.
Sarbit said that staff were already afraid to work because of the outbreak and uneasy about the mixed messages they received during the night Aghtai spread disinformation. Some areas of the facility missed more than 80% of staff on the morning of March 8, 2020. Night shift staff worked overtime, managers less familiar with residents reported to work and some family members even stepped in to assist their relatives.
One of the elderly residents became the first-known victim of the disease in Canada later on March 8, 2020.
“[Aghtai] put people’s lives at risk,” Sarbit said. “I certainly cannot say that the male who passed away that evening wouldn’t have passed away but for Mr. Aghtai’s actions. It may well have been that he passed away regardless, but, certainly Mr. Aghtai’s actions would have impacted on the amount of care and attention he was able to receive in his final hours.”
The calls were reported to the RCMP on March 9, 2020.
Three months later, by the time the outbreak was declared over, 76 residents and staff had caught the virus and 20 residents had died.
Aghtai also pleaded guilty to public mischief and conveying a false message with intent to alarm after a swatting incident that targeted the Fields store in Parksville on Nov. 15, 2019. Sarbit told court that Aghtai called the Oceanside RCMP detachment, pretending to be a store employee hiding in a store bathroom, claiming that a black man wearing body armour was randomly shooting people in the store.
Ten police officers rushed to the store on high alert, but found no shooter and no victims. Aghtai also called the store manager at her home the next day, pretending to be a police officer.
“It’s clear from Mr. Aghtai’s history that he knew his false call prompt a large police response.
In doing so, he was placing any black males who may have been in the vicinity at risk of harm,” she said. “His choice to impersonate a police officer when calling the manager the next day on your private number of causes for loss of fear and sorry a sense of fear and a loss of trust.”
The mobile phone that Aghtai used for both crimes was in his name, but paid for by his mother.
Sarbit said Aghtai comes from a family with significant wealth, but his employment history is limited —he has worked as a computer technician for his father’s construction company and as a security guard in a brothel.
“He would have what I would describe as an entitled upbringing, where his parents continue to support him financially.”
Sarbit said that Aghtai had a criminal history dating back to 2008 for making hoax phone calls that falsely alleged heinous crimes or impersonated police officers. Sometimes he made calls to seek revenge against enemies, other times to coax recipients to inadvertently cause damage. He also has a record of assault, robbery, break and enter, confinement and weapons offences, and violating court orders. Also in 2020, he stole personal protective equipment from a seniors care home and escaped lawful custody at Richmond Hospital where he assaulted two corrections officers by threatening them with a contaminated syringe.
Sarbit said a 2014 psychological assessment concluded that Aghtai was a narcissistic, anti-social alcohol abuser with psychopathic tendencies.
Sarbit recommended a sentence of two years less a day plus three years probation. Aghtai’s defence lawyer, Josh Oppal, asked for a 16-to 18-month sentence.
A judge reserved decision. Since Aghtai has remained in custody since September 2020, and is eligible for a time-served credit, he is unlikely to serve more time for the Parksville and North Vancouver crimes.
Oppal said his client should receive a shorter sentence because his guilty plea cancelled the trial and that his time behind bars happened during the pandemic when there were limited visitation opportunities and frequent lockdowns.
“Clearly serious offences, clearly a related record, it’s not denied these are offences that had some impact,” Oppal said.
When Aghtai addressed the court Jan. 16, he expressed remorse for the crimes and apologized to everyone at the Lynn Valley Care Centre, the Fields store and his family.
“I want to apologize to the families of the people at the Lynn Valley Care at the time, I didn’t think it would have as much of an impact as it did, I was really looking at it as tunnel vision I was under the influence,” he said.
Aghtai vowed not to repeat the behaviour and said his goal is to become a law-abiding, respectful member of society.
“I have to think of the words to describe it, but I find it disgusting and sad that I’ve wasted so much. It’s my actions that have resulted in loss of so much time,” he said.
Lawmakers consider keeping daylight saving time year-round (Washington Post) After a long, dark winter, our noticeably sunnier evenings are about to turn even brighter. At 2 a.m. Sunday, the clocks will “spring forward” one hour as we return to daylight saving time (DST). The time shift means we lose an hour of sleep, but in exchange we’ll enjoy more evening light for the next eight months — until we “fall back” to standard time again in early November. But what if we advanced the clocks this weekend and never had to turn them back? The idea is gaining some traction after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators this week reintroduced a bill that would eliminate standard time and keep daylight saving time year-round. The Sunshine Protection Act, proposed by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), along with four Republican and three Democratic senators, says we should ditch standard time since we only use it four months of the year, from November to March. “The call to end the antiquated practice of clock changing is gaining momentum throughout the nation,” Rubio said in a statement. The United States experimented with year-round DST during the 1970s energy crisis, from January 1974 to October 1975. The dark winter mornings were not too popular, however, and ever since, we’ve switched the clocks back to standard time during the winter months.
With ‘big one’ coming, quake alert system launches in Oregon (AP) People in Oregon will be better prepared for earthquakes—particularly important in the Pacific Northwest because experts say “the big one” is coming—as an early warning system launched Thursday, the 10th anniversary of a devastating quake and tsunami in Japan. California already has the system, while Washington state will join in May to complete coverage of the West Coast. The ShakeAlert system operated by the U.S. Geological Survey uses seismographic sensors to detect significant earthquakes quickly so alerts reach smartphones and people can seek cover before the shaking starts. “It’s very important that (the three states) are all partners in ShakeAlert, because earthquakes don’t respect geographic boundaries, and we have huge population centers all across the West Coast where earthquake risk is the highest in the contiguous U.S.,” said Gabriel Lotto, ShakeAlert user engagement facilitator for the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. Earthquakes in the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends from the ocean off Northern California to Canada’s Vancouver Island, have an average magnitude of around 9, making them among the world’s biggest. A quake in that zone has a 37% probability of happening off Oregon in the next 50 years, with a slightly lower chance of one striking near Washington state, according to Chris Goldfinger, an Oregon State University professor and earthquake geologist. When an earthquake is detected, people who have alerts activated on their smartphones will get a message saying, “Earthquake detected! Drop, cover, hold on. Protect yourself.” Mobile apps also carry the alerts.
Rage Spreads in Paraguay as Virus Surges, Exposing Corruption (NYT) For nearly a year, Paraguay was a leader in keeping the pandemic at bay, and despite its persistent troubles, the country remained fairly calm. Not any more. Paraguay’s coronavirus infection rate has soared, becoming one of the worst in the Americas, and its already shaky health system has been stretched to the breaking point. In the last few days, demonstrators by the thousands have filled streets, demanding the ouster of President Mario Abdo Benítez, and in a few instances there have been bloody clashes with the police. For many Paraguayans, corruption and elite entitlement that were once just unpleasant facts of life have become intolerable in the face of the pandemic. There is a shortage of basic drugs that doctors and nurses blame on graft; nonemergency surgery has been suspended because of a shortfall in medical supplies, and there are few vaccines to be had. The crisis has spilled into the streets with a level of rage the county’s leaders have not faced in years. Daily protests started last Friday with medical workers, who were quickly joined by other frustrated people. Most have been peaceful, but in some cases security forces have met the demonstrators with rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons. “There are so many deaths and it is all the fault of the thieves who run our corrupt institutions,” said Sergio Duarte, who joined a demonstration outside of Congress on Saturday in Asunción, Paraguay’s capital and largest city.
Amid pandemic, ‘an international epidemic’ of childhood pain (AP) By the time his parents rushed him to the hospital, 11-year-old Pablo was barely eating and had stopped drinking entirely. Weakened by months of self-privation, his heart had slowed to a crawl and his kidneys were faltering. Medics injected him with fluids and fed him through a tube—first steps toward stitching together yet another child coming apart amid the tumult of the coronavirus crisis. For doctors who treat them, the pandemic’s impact on the mental health of children is increasingly alarming. The Paris pediatric hospital caring for Pablo has seen a doubling in the number of children and young teenagers requiring treatment after attempted suicides since September. Doctors elsewhere report similar surges, with children—some as young as 8—deliberately running into traffic, overdosing on pills and otherwise self-harming. In Japan, child and adolescent suicides hit record levels in 2020, according to the Education Ministry. Pediatric psychiatrists say they’re also seeing children with coronavirus-related phobias, tics and eating disorders, obsessing about infection, scrubbing their hands raw, covering their bodies with disinfectant gel and terrified of getting sick from food. Also increasingly common, doctors say, are children suffering panic attacks, heart palpitations and other symptoms of mental anguish, as well as chronic addictions to mobile devices and computer screens that have become their sitters, teachers and entertainers during lockdowns, curfews and school closures. “There is no prototype for the child experiencing difficulties,” said Dr. Richard Delorme, who heads the psychiatric unit treating Pablo at the giant Robert Debré pediatric hospital, the busiest in France. “This concerns all of us.”
Everest reopens (NYT) Nepal has reopened to foreign tourists who test negative for the coronavirus and spend one week in quarantine, meaning an often-overcrowded Everest has reopened to climbers. The decision to reopen the peak is proving controversial, with at least one tour company canceling its spring expeditions over safety concerns. Meanwhile, some in Nepal want to see restrictions eased even further, as many of the cooks and porters who typically make a living as support staff for Everest climbs have struggled to feed their families amid the sudden loss of income.
Myanmar junta kills more protesters, adds Suu Kyi accusation (AP) Myanmar’s security forces shot to death at least 10 people protesting the military’s coup Thursday, spurning a U.N. Security Council appeal to stop using lethal force and as an independent U.N. expert cited growing evidence of crimes against humanity. The military also lodged a new allegation against the deposed government leader Aung San Suu Kyi, alleging that in 2017-18 she was illegally given $600,000 and gold bars worth slightly less by a political ally. She and President Win Myint have been detained on less serious allegations and the new accusation was clearly aimed at discrediting Suu Kyi and perhaps charging her with a serious crime.
China legislature endorses reducing public vote in Hong Kong (AP) China’s ceremonial legislature on Thursday endorsed the ruling Communist Party’s move to tighten control over Hong Kong by reducing the role of its public in picking the territory’s leaders. The measure drew condemnation from Britain and the U.S. and accusations it will disenfranchise Hong Kong’s people. It adds to a crackdown against a protest movement in Hong Kong calling for greater democracy. The crackdown has prompted accusations Beijing is eroding the autonomy it promised when the former British colony was returned to China in 1997 and is hurting its status as a global financial center. Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong has added to irritants in China’s relations with Washington, Europe and other governments that also include trade, technology and the party’s treatment of ethnic minorities.
Japan to tighten border control against variants (AP) Transportation minister Kazuyoshi Akaba says Japan will tighten border controls and limit the number of entrants to up to 2,000 per day to guard against the more contagious variants of the coronavirus. The health authorities have found the cases of the new variants to have quadrupled over the past month. They said the cases have been found in about half of Japan’s 47 prefectures but need to be closely watched and precautions should be increased. Tokyo and its three neighboring prefectures are under a non-binding state of emergency since Jan. 7. The measure, which was to end on March 7 in those areas, has been extended for two weeks as the infections have not slowed enough.
‘People are starving’: New exodus in Ethiopia’s Tigray area (AP) Skinny, hungry, fleeing threats of violence, thousands of people who have been hiding in rural areas of Ethiopia’s Tigray region have begun arriving in a community that can barely support them—and more are said to be on the way. For months, one great unknown in the Tigray conflict has been the fate of hundreds of thousands of people in vast rural areas beyond the reach of outside aid. With the region largely cut off from the world since November, fears of violence and starvation have grown. Now those people are starting to arrive, many by foot, in the community of Shire, aid workers who are there and who have visited say. Some 5,000 people had arrived between last Wednesday and Sunday, and humanitarian teams are being sent to find those said to be on the way, Oliver Behn, general director for Doctors Without Borders-Holland, told the AP. “They are coming in very bad conditions … very exhausted, dehydrated, skinny,” Behn said after a visit. “It’s becoming a desperate situation very quickly.” The people arriving bring an idea of the deprivation gnawing at the Tigray countryside. Aid workers say some describe surviving by eating leaves—or the seeds they had put aside for planting, in a sign of even worse hunger to come.
~ MOST WANTED! ~
❝ Yeah, I’ll peg a man— if I have to. ❞
Name: Taylor ‘TJ’ Jenkins
Species: Werewolf
Age: 40
Sexuality: Gynesexual (andro-curious)
Occupation: Personal assistant of Tsai Franklin at Liie Marketing
Civilian
Face Claim: Katherine Moennig / Jacqueline Toboni
✒ BACKGROUND: Born in 1980 in a small pack on Vancouver island, Taylor was just your average wolf, who never really stood out until puberty, when they started to really experiment with their sexuality. It wasn’t that they liked being the centre of the attention, but they had a way - don’t ask them how - to make women gravitate toward them in nightclubs. Of course, their life had its ups and downs, like anyone else, but it was their own and they liked it.
Eventually, they found a steady job as a personal assistant to a graphic designer. He was a good employer and a friend of their pack, even though he was human. They took care of everything that wasn’t directly related to his business; such as hotel, tickets and restaurant bookings, or setting up time for him to see his family, buying gifts for them, or shopping for his clothes. It was a fun job that gave them space.
In mid 2013, while on a business trip in South Carolina, their boss’s agency won a prestigious contract over another agency. Taylor could tell that the loser wasn’t too happy about it, and they guessed it was because the head of their team had been a 21-year-old werewolf, feeling humiliated that he had lost to a human. But they didn’t pay it much attention, because that was part of the business. Later that night, while celebrating with their boss in his hotel suite, the young werewolf and his goons burst through the door and incapacitated both of them. In his tantrum, the wolf killed Taylor’s boss, knowing that he’d secure the contract without him and decided to make money out of them since they were a wolf.
Taylor was knocked out and woke up in a cell. They were quickly informed by a guard that they were in a place called “Covaire City”, and that they were now a slave at the mercy of other supernaturals. They cried and raged for days, trying in vain to explain that it was a mistake and that they had a pack back in British Columbia, Canada. But no one cared.
The years passed, and they learned to just accept their fate and roll with it, getting claimed thrice in their four years in the city.
Taylor was a 2-year claim with a young submissive vampire Master, who they adored, but who had to leave because of family drama outside of town when slavery was abolished in February 2018.
But during that time, their Master got their a job at Liie Marketing as a mailgirl. They eventually caught the attention of Tsai Franklin, the owner, after he had heard of their story and realised it had been one of his employees who had done that to Taylor. Tsai and their then-Master worked together to have Taylor become a civilian. Their plan worked, especially when Tsai was able to convince the Dominion and the King that they would be more useful as a civilian than an escort for his company if they became his personal assistant. At first, reasoning didn’t work and fell onto deaf ears, until he sold out his employee for his crime outside of the city, which could’ve caused trouble for his company. The Dominion was concerned about that transgression since it affected the city, so a trade was made with a generous donation to Covaire; TJ would become a civilian while his ex-employee would take their place as a slave. But as slavery was abolished, the ex-employee would be sent to prison instead.
When presented to them, TJ realised that even though freedom and a couple missing years of their life sounded good, having a job with someone they respected who could train them and a somewhat normal life, was better. As a civilian, they knew they could eventually contact their old pack. They also promised themselves to work for Tsai until they had paid him back for all he’d done for them, because they knew it didn’t come freely.
✒ PERSONALITY: Taylor often comes off as brash, but they’re really just comfortable in their own skin, and will speak their mind if it doesn’t get them into too much trouble. However, they’re not the defiant type, and don’t see the logic and enjoyment behind insulting Clients, or anyone else for that matter. They simply find it juvenile to throw fits at people who couldn’t really do anything about a whole city.
Generally speaking, TJ stays out of trouble and doesn’t cause any. But since they’re beyond the stage of feeling motherly towards other escorts and civilians, they won’t hesitate to rat someone out to save their own ass. And because of that, they’ll only make friends with slaves or civilians with a solid reputation.
As a claimed slave, they were somewhat loyal as long as they thought they were being treated properly. In the right hands, whether a man’s or a woman’s, TJ will never betray them. And most importantly, TJ prefers their women submissive; they’ll be versatile because they have to, but they prefer to hold the reins in the bedroom.
