Oh my god, I finally understand why everyone raves about London Calling by The Clash. Holy fucking shit is that an amazing album!

I already knew and loved "London Calling" and "Train in Vain", but hearing the album in full is like nothing I was expecting. Holy shit. I especially loved "Rudie Can't Fail", "Lost in the Supermarket", "Clampdown", "The Guns of Brixton", and "The Card Cheat" (for this last one I have to say: it doesn't matter if they're a punk band - I will always love piano in a rock song. ALWAYS. ...well, at least, given that it's played well).

there's a certain vibe to quarantine music videos that i really can't unsee: the home-done greenscreen, how we got super into cartoon backgrounds for a while (we had no choice). wildflower is part of a generation and a community also containing things like keith urban's superman. these songs could all be part of one same visualisation MTVesque ABC Kids/CBeebies inspired playlist. it's such a mark of the times and I kind of love the art that came out of that era

So listened to a couple of songs from a band called Man Man 4 to 5 years ago.

And at the time I was still a Christian fundamentalist so I was both terrified and guilty every time I did it (I was also like 15 maybe 16 years old)

there's a certain quality the harmonies of like... early to mid 2000s alt rock has. which i am obsessed with... like i wanna do that. i NEED to figure out how to write harmonies that sound like that

#ari opinion hour #i sort of understand it but not necessarily well enough to do it on command #i think i sort of achieved the sound of it with my blaseball winter exchange song i did for snow but specifically only in the very last bit #like only with the 'im not alive anymore' part #(which sidenote i wish id had the second half faster + w more drive but its not like that was like a full recording which i could do)#i think i just need my music to have more teeth in general cause it scratches an itch that i think i must have developed due to some aspect #of music school. its probably my dissatisfaction with the attitudes in the classical world #<- which understand i say that in the same way that like my jazz prof does. the classical world doesnt have enough teeth nor enough #understanding of the way in which music is like. another art. and art needs to be able to have teeth and use elements normally regarded as #''undesirable'' on purpose because art is there to make you feel emotions and not just the positive ones and not just sadness or anger in #terms of the negative ones #art is there to make u feel ALL extant emotions and that includes boredom disgust fear jealousy pity cowardice apathy overwhelmedness etc #also the classical world i find often forgets what the word ''play'' means #i am of the opinion that perfection is a waste of time if i wanted perfect i'd ask a computer to do it for me. i want real #anyway. i forgot what this post was even about lol point is i need to figure out how to write harmonies that have that soaring quality that #like. you can hear it in like helena by mcr and wake me up by evanescence and stuff. and frankly most of the songs on three cheers for swee #revenge which i am listening to now for the first time. i need to learn more about this stuff maybe ill listen to the evanescence album tha #song is from next.#or something i should really be working on my essay but theres no way i wont have it done in time which is good i think i just mostly have #to worry about sources and stuff but even that should be relatively easy i think

#joanna newsom #ys #shabaka #shabaka hutchings #perceive its beauty acknowledge its grace #ok so. story time. first came across Shabaka while he was still in Sons of Kemet (aka before he retired from the sax for the #forseeable future) and absolutely f*cked with that sh*t. i mean F*CKED with it bc look. he's Bajan. he's cranking out some serious #Afro-Caribbean jazz during his time there the polyrhythms are f*cking on point etc etc #tucked that sh*t away in my Spotify library didn't think much of it. then i heard he was retiring from sax to focus on other instruments #and went '??????' bc yk. Shabaka. sax. kind of inseparable. he did it anyway for his mental health's sake and i'm proud of him #but then. THEN he dropped the first single off of this album on us back in February and i lost it. then he dropped the second #in March and the third in April with he and Moses Sumney i. good God just take me already nah #by the time it dropped on April 12 a day after the Sumney drop i was locked tf in. like it has been on rotation with some of my #other favorites since but anyway. only recently i realized while loading it up again that 'hey this sounds like something Joanna #would put out' and lo and behold. he says it right there that's exactly why it sounds like that brethren. pls. listen to the entire #thing for me pls. the last track called 'Song of the Motherland' features his father performing a spoken word piece and lives #inside my head rent free now. sorry. if this haunts me then it must haunt you too i don't make the rules

just listened to ttpd in its entirety (obviously including the anthology) for the second time and it is in fact an INCREDIBLE album. i will be listening to the albatross more often bc oh my god it is so good

so i’ve made it clear in the past that i think 1989 is seblaine’s album, but also, part of that is because it has sad breakup songs that match their story and like ignoring the fact 1989 came out in 2014, i’m just thinking about them transitioning from saying “it’s our album except the sad songs those don’t match us” to realizing that yeah the sad songs do match them now

My favorite rabbit holes to fall down start with my favorite band and lead me to my other favorite bands, as well as, of course, exposing me to new-to-me artists and bands. The cool thing about this is that IT ALWAYS HAPPENS in the way(s) I least expect. :')

AND NOW I GET TO LISTEN TO THEM. :'D #I also found out that Shelly engineered two of this woman slide guitarist's albums who I've never heard of before?!#so now I also get to discover a new-to-me artist whose work I hope I like! (her name is Ellen McIlwaine btw)
