The Sun, the Moon, and All Our Stars
Summary: Nine years after the events of Hogwarts Legacy, Sebastian Sallow has little hope for a positive future. While serving a life sentence in Azkaban, he managed to escape with the assistance of a terroristic organization of Dark wizards. When the Ministry of Magic eventually caught up with Sebastian, he struck a deal to serve as a double-agent and bring the gang to justice as a means to his freedom. Lonely, traumatized, and depressed, he never imagines his luck will change. But one moonlit night, it does. Fate intervenes in the form of Kate Mayflower, the Hogwarts assistant librarian. Infinitely optimistic and kind, she helps Sebastian find joy and peace again as he regains his humanity and rebuilds his life. While their journey towards happily ever after is a turbulent one, they slowly learn to trust in each other, believe in the power of true love, and heed the lessons from the past in order to grow.
Please note: This work is intended for an adult audience and minors should not read. There is a great deal of subject matter inappropriate for children (many spicy scenes, NSFW artwork, violence, various traumatic incidents, etc.). I will do my best to post specific content warnings chapter by chapter.
Characters and settings are based on Hogwarts Legacy and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

A comprehensive guide on how to turn the good guys bad.
Sebastian x f!oc, seventh year, post-canon/canon-divergent, idiots in love, mutual pining, eventual romance, suppressed powers, slytherin x ravenclaw pairing, no game-play retelling. [rated mature, no smut.]

đŠ C h a p t e r o n e [2.4k words]
If Aurélie Collins had to choose one word to best describe herself, she supposed it would be, to put it as delicately as she could: "completely and utterly overwhelmed." Granted, that was four words, not one, but as she trudged down yet another unfamiliar corridor, she was simply relieved she could string together a coherent sentence at all; after the last few months of hell she'd endured, Aurélie wasn't her usual eloquent self, to say the least.
She hadn't always been this way: overwhelmed, that is. In fact, if asked only a few months ago to describe herself, she would've said she was dutiful, quick-witted, and, if not brave, then definitely unafraid of facing challenges head-on. She'd been a confident girl once: she got good grades, always did as she was asked and never stepped a toe out of line. Everyone â from her parents and teachers to her friends and peers â knew that AurĂ©lie Collins would go on to achieve whatever she set her mind to.
Now, though? Well, nowadays she was too overwhelmed, too exhausted, too beset by grief to set her mind on much of anything.
â And this new school of hers certainly wasn't doing anything to improve her situation.
Bloody Hogwarts.
Of all places she'd ever imagined herself living, the freezing cold Scottish Highlands was absolutely not one of them. But, then again, she wouldn't have believed she'd be an orphan at seventeen either, yet here she was.
Hogwarts was famous, of course. Heralded as the pinnacle of magical education and arguably the top school in the wizarding world, most witches and wizards were honoured to attend such a prestigious establishment. But Aurélie was of the opinion that every bloody thing at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was confusing, unnecessary, or just downright nonsensical. From the ever-changing floorplan to the myriad of talking portraits (all of whom gave her wildly conflicting directions depending on which ones she asked), nothing about Hogwarts made any sense.
She was almost in tears by the time she reached another dead end. It was simply impossible to find one's way around a school like this; there were too many floors to navigate, too many disused classrooms and far too many staircases that led to nowhere. Not to mention, beyond its confusing floorplan and unbearably draughty rooms, the ancient hulking castle was rather ugly â by AurĂ©lie's standards at least; the monolithic Gothic castle was so far removed from the elegance and charm of Beauxbatons that it seemed almost cruel that she should be forced to endure it at all. She could almost hear her best friend CĂ©leste's reaction if she were with her now: 'Ugh, it's so awfully medieval. Stone Gargoyles? And all those uncouth English boys? I don't know which I find more barbaric!'
She almost smiled at the thought. But only almost â for thinking of her best friend only made her sad.
Shaking herself mentally, she shifted the weight of her books from one arm to the other and cast a despairing glance over her gloomy surroundings. She did not like thinking about her old life, least of all while she was lost in a labyrinth of spooky corridors and dingy classrooms on her very first day of school.Â
'Which Merlin-forsaken floor is this, anyway?' she muttered to herself in French as a group of first years rounded the corner, giggling obnoxiously. She knew them as Slytherin's not by the green and silver of their robes, but by the way they skittered around her, unwilling to help though she was clearly in need.
Notoriously unfriendly was how her father had described the snakes. Unlike her maman, a Beauxbatons alumna â and later a professor of music â AurĂ©lie's papa had attended Hogwarts in his youth, though he'd been a Hufflepuff: a badger, not a snake.
He'd have helped anyone in need â even a Slytherin.
Her heart gave an awful, sickening lurch at the thought of him. Oh, her wonderful papa: patient and good-humoured and endlessly curious and â
Dead. He's dead, Aurélie. Stop thinking about him.
Swallowing the lump in her throat, she trudged on determinedly, taking what felt like the hundredth set of stairs she'd already descended that morning while shame roiled in her stomach; she wasn't used to failing â not at tests, not at taking care of herself, and certainly not at something as simple as getting to class on time. Even the first years knew where they were going, for crying out loud, and they'd been here for just as short a time as she had!
When at last she found herself facing yet another dead end, she finally conceded defeat. Trying very hard not to cry, she adjusted her unflattering black robes (oh, to be dressed in fine blue silk again) and began to seriously consider how much trouble she'd be in if she just went back to bed. Or, more tempting still, how badly she'd be punished if she fled back to France and never returned to Hogwarts again, graduation be damned.
Because what did her education matter when her future was so unsure? What did anything matter when everything she knew had been taken from her?
But no, she couldn't leave Hogwarts; it was the safest place for her since her parents had died, and Professor Weasley, the Deputy Headmistress, had evoked the power of Merlin himself to secure her a place here at such short notice; apparently, it had not been an easy feat convincing Headmaster Black to take on a student with her reputation.
Aurélie sighed and squeezed her eyes closed. 'It's just for one year,' she muttered under her breath, repeating the phrase that had become her mantra. 'Just one year, that's all.'
'Unless you're trying to break into the Slytherin common room,' said an unexpected voice behind her, 'I'm going to assume you're lost.'
Aurélie whirled around so fast she whipped herself in the face with her long auburn braid. She hadn't always been a jumpy sort of person, but losing both parents at the same time had a way of making one rather fearful of unexpected voices in unfamiliar corridors.
The boy who stood before her had his wand held up to her chest; its tip glowed brightly red in front of his face, casting an ominous-looking hue over pale skin and flaxen hair. Almost immediately, AurĂ©lie saw visions of dark shadows and searing red pain, scraps and flashes of fear, the sound of someone crying â
Not again.
For one dreadful, heart-stopping moment, she thought he meant to curse her â
Her palms tingled; a telltale sign that the forbidden magic in her blood was very much alive despite her efforts to suppress it â and very much wanted to be used.
Not again, please.
She stumbled backwards, but the boy made no move to attack. Instead, he simply stared at her. â No, not at her but through her. It was then that she noticed his eyes; milky white and translucent, gleaming like pearlescent orbs in his angular face.
He was blind.
'S-sorry,' Aurélie said a little breathlessly. 'I'm trying to find Defence Against the Dark Arts, but I'm afraid I...' She swallowed hard. 'I have no idea where I am.'
The boy chuckled, and though the sound was pleasant enough, it was undoubtedly more incredulous than amused. 'Oh my, you are lost, aren't you?'
Pinned to the breast pocket of his immaculate robes was a small badge engraved with the words Head Boy; even bathed under the red glow of his wand light, she could clearly make out the tiny snake etched onto its gleaming surface. Another Slytherin.
She'd known very little about the four Hogwarts houses before embarking on her unexpected stint at the school, but when the Sorting Hat had asked her if she'd had a preference, all she could think was that she didn't want to be part of a house whose emblem was a snake.
When Aurélie did not reply, he heaved an impatient sigh.
'You're the new Ravenclaw,' he said matter-of-factly. 'I must say, I didn't expect to find you all the way down here.'
The boy had a distinctly aristocratic air about him: haughty and vaguely displeased as all aristocratic types were loath to be, with fine, blonde hair slicked back from his face, high cheekbones and a sharp jawline that screamed of fine magical breeding. Aurélie wondered vaguely which noble family he was from, for she certainly knew a wealthy pureblood when she saw one; half of Beauxbatons was full of old ennobled wizarding families.
As she opened her mouth to ask him how he knew who she was, he cut her off â
'I recognise your accent,' he explained as if he'd read her thoughts. 'There aren't any other French students at Hogwarts.' His sharp, clipped voice was a stark contrast to his delicate features, and yet, there was something strangely unsettling about it that stirred something inside her. Something familiar. Something... unpleasant.
'Half French,' she corrected him, pushing the thought away. 'My father was English, mother was French. But â er, yes, I suppose I do sound different to everyone else.'
Having been bilingual all her life, AurĂ©lie spoke both English and French fluently â but apparently, her French accent wasn't as undetectable as she'd hoped. She smoothed her clammy hands down the front of her awfully drab robes, acutely aware of how the boy's unseeing eyes seemed to pierce her with surprising intensity.
'Yes, well,' he drawled in a tone that suggested that he didn't particularly care about the finer details of her heritage. 'You're absolutely nowhere near the Defence floor. In fact, you're almost in the dungeons. Frankly, I'm baffled you managed to make it here from the Great Hall all by yourself. Why weren't you following your classmates?'
'Oh. I wasn't in the Great Hall. I came straight from my common room.'
Not entirely trusting that anything she ate would stay down for long, she'd opted to skip breakfast in the hall with the other students that morning and head straight to class instead. Though the few Ravenclaw's she'd met so far had seemed friendly enough, their interest in the new foreign transfer student made her uncomfortable. One particularly rambunctuous Ravenclaw boy whose name she couldn't recall had ogled her like she was an exotic beast and told her that Hogwarts never got transfer students â not ever.
'If I'd been made to be sorted in front of the entire school as a seventh year,' he had said, 'I would have died of humiliation.'
Inwardly, Aurélie had agreed with him, for she certainly didn't count the Sorting Ceremony as one of her favourite life experiences. Outwardly though, she'd only smiled politely and told him it hadn't been so bad before excusing herself to a quiet corner of the common room to sit alone.
She had no intention of making friends during her single year at Hogwarts. Given that she planned to head straight back to France the moment she graduated, the thought of making friends only to have to say goodbye to them was an ordeal she wasn't sure she could endure. But beyond that, she feared that should anyone find out the truth about why she'd transferred in the first place, well... It was better to be invisible than a source of gossip and speculation.
As a seventeen-year-old witch who hadn't achieved anything particularly extraordinary, AurĂ©lie didn't think herself interesting by any stretch. But unfortunately, having ones family murdered by dark wizards certainly was â and that was not something she wanted to be known for.
'So you're telling me,' the boy said with an impatient huff, 'that you managed to get yourself from the Ravenclaw common room, one of the highest points in the castle, to the very lowest depths of the dungeons, and didn't at any point stop to think that perhaps you were headed in the wrong direction?' His translucent pupils gleamed red under the glow of his wand light. 'Nor did you think it prudent to eat something before you start studying for your N.E.W.T.s, the most important and difficult exam in a witch's educational career?' He shook his head in exasperation. 'And here I was thinking Ravenclaw's were supposed to be intelligent.'
Aurélie didn't quite know how to react to this outburst, but rather thought she'd been right to not want to be in the snake house. When she made no reply, the boy heaved another heavy sigh, clearly annoyed.
'Very well,' he sniffed. 'As Head Boy, I suppose it is my duty to help you, even though you ought to be old enough by now to look after yourself. Come along, then.'
With a final sneer, the boy turned on his heel and strode purposefully down the empty corridor. Despite her chagrin, Aurélie couldn't help but marvel at the way his wand seemed to act as a proxy for his sight; pulsing like a heartbeat, it lead him effortlessly through the maze of corridors that even she with her perfect vision couldn't seem to navigate. She hurried after him, silently chastising herself for being so useless that she had to be led to class by a blind boy.
'Ominis Gaunt, by the way,' he said once she'd caught up to him; he was rather a fast walker for someone who couldn't see where they were going.
'Oh, er â hello, I'm â'
'Aurélie Collins,' he cut in, pronouncing her first name the correct French way. 'Yes, I know who you are. Now, do pay attention, won't you? Defence Against the Dark Arts is on the third floor, not in the dungeons. Even I can tell this isn't the third floor, and I'm blind.'
Aurélie grimaced. Perhaps the Sorting Hat had made a mistake putting her into a house whose members were valued for being clever.
'So... you're Head Boy?' she asked timidly.
'That is what I said, isn't it?' came his sharp reply. 'And I'll have you know that I've quite enough to be getting on with today without needing to rescue stray Ravenclaws from the dungeons.'
'I didn't need rescuing,' she muttered under her breath, but Ominis only ignored her, and after a very tense silence and several staircases later, they came to a stop outside the correct classroom on the third floor.
'Do try not to get yourself so embarrassingly lost again, won't you?' he said tersely. 'I don't have time to babysit seventh years, I've enough first year drama to deal with as it is.'
And with that, he was away again, muttering darkly about Ravenclaw's and incompetence as he went, leaving Aurélie standing dumbfounded in his wake.

wait what if mc accidentally sent sebastian a love letter. like they were trying to write down their feelings and it just got sent by a helpful roommate by mistake
Love Letter | Sebastian Sallow x Reader
I HOPE YOU ENJOY ANON! I really had a great time writing the love letter, UGH that got me right in the heart ;.;
Words: ~3,900
Tags: Reader Insert, Female MC, No Y/N, No Hogwarts House, Drama, Fluff, Romance
Sebastian,
Witch Weekly says that writing down your feelings is supposed to help. That if youâre in love with someone you can never have, you should put it all down on parchment, let it spill from your heart like ink onto a page. Then, once itâs written, you can crumple it up, set it on fire, or hide it away where no one will ever find it.
I suppose itâs meant to be cathartic. A way to lighten the burden, to lessen the ache. But I know better.
Because no matter how many words I pour onto this page, no matter how many times I try to convince myself that this will fix something, I already know the truth.
There is no fixing this. There is no untangling my heart from yours.
I will love you until the day I die.
It feels embarrassing to even write that, like Iâm some sappy, lovesick fool. But I suppose thatâs exactly what I am. And who cares, really? No one is ever going to see this.
No one will ever know how deep this goes but me.
How have you never noticed, Sebastian? Youâre supposed to be so sharp, so quick-witted, always a step ahead of everyone else.
But the truth is Iâve loved you since fifth year, since the moment we met.
Since the day you smirked at me like you already knew all my secrets, like you had me all figured out before Iâd even said a word. You were infuriating from the startâsharp-tongued, arrogant, always so bloody sure of yourself. You challenged me, teased me, riled me up just to see me snap.
And I never stood a chance.
Somewhere along the way, your laughter became my favorite sound. Your voice became my comfort. Your presence became home.
I know youâin a way I donât think even you do. I remember everything.
The way you take your tea, strong and almost disgustingly sweet, like youâre trying to cover up the bitterness with reckless abandon.
The way you tilt your head when youâre about to say something infuriatingly smug, that damnable smirk already forming before the words have even left your mouth.
The way your brow furrows when youâre deep in thought, when you think no oneâs watching.
The way your hands twitch when youâre holding back, itching to reach for your wand, to fight, to protect.
The way you bite your lip when youâre trying not to laugh.
The way your eyesâMerlin, your eyesâburn with every emotion you try to hide. You think you're so clever, so unreadable, but I see it all. The mischief, the fire, the frustration, the fleeting moments of doubt youâd never admit to. They undo me. Every damn time.
And Iâve tried, Sebastian.
Iâve tried to love someone else.
Iâve been with other boys. Iâve gone on dates and smiled at the right moments, Iâve listened when they talked, Iâve let them hold me. And I wanted to feel somethingâI tried to feel something.
But none of them were you.
I could no sooner remove you from my heart than I could carve it from my own body.
You are in me. In every breath, in every thought, in every moment I spend wishing things were different.
And I have long since resigned myself to the reality that this is how it will always be.
You are my best friend, and that is more important than my feelings. It has to be. Because if I ever told youâif I ever let this slipâI donât think I could bear the consequences.
So I stay quiet.
And at night, I stare up at the canopy of my bed and let myself think about all the things I will never have.
I think about you. I think about what it would be like if I were braver. I think about how youâd react if I kissed you.
Would your eyes go half-lidded, hazy with something slow and molten? Would you pull me close, pressing me against you, against something solid and warm? Would you let me run my hands through your hair, feel the softness of it between my fingers?
I wonder how youâd taste. If your mouth would be all heat and urgency, if youâd bite my lower lip just to make me gasp. If youâd whisper my name against my skin like youâve always known it was meant for your lips.
Would you let me have you?
I think about it at night, when itâs late and the world is quiet and Iâm alone with nothing but the ache of wanting you. I press my face into my pillow, close my eyes, and let myself pretendâjust for a little whileâthat you want me, too.
But it doesnât really matter. Because Iâll never know.
And I know I am eighteen years old, and older people love to say that teenagers donât know what love is. That weâre naive, foolish, that we think weâll feel this way forever when really, itâs just a passing fancy.
But of this, of my love for you, I am more certain than I have ever been of anything.
This is not something I will grow out of. This is not something that will fade. This is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life, whether I want to or not.
And I will keep it locked away, because I would rather love you in silence than lose you forever.
So Iâll fold this letter, tuck it away, and pretend it doesnât exist.
Because you will never know.
âYours (though youâll never know it),
You signed your name, sniffing as you pressed your palm against the parchment, as if you could smooth away the trembling emotions trapped in ink.
There. Itâs done.
It had felt good, in a way, to let it all out. But just as you predicted, writing it down hadnât changed anything. Hadnât lessened the ache or made your heart any lighter. If anything, it felt heavier, the weight of your unspoken love solidified in every word scrawled across the page.
You exhaled, folding the letter carefullyâalmost reverentlyâbefore setting it on your bedside table. You had every intention of tucking it away in your trunk, hidden beneath layers of robes where no one would ever find it.
But exhaustion was already pressing at your bones, and you thought, Iâll do it in the morning.
So you blew out the candle, turned onto your side, and let sleep pull you under.
Sunlight streamed through the windows when you woke with a start, your stomach dropping at the realization that youâd overslept.
âShit,â you mumbled, throwing the blankets off and scrambling to dress as your roommates bustled around, already halfway through their morning routines.
âYou mustâve been exhausted,â one of them teased as you tugged your uniform into place.
You barely heard them, too busy cursing yourself for missing breakfast. By the time you grabbed your bag and rushed out of the dormitory, your mind was already occupied with the day aheadâassignments, Professor Ronenâs latest essay, and the Quidditch scrimmage planned for the afternoon.
You never even glanced at your bedside table.
Never noticed the missing letter.
Nevertheless, your day had passed by like any other.
Youâd managed to dodge Sharpâs wrath over a half-finished potion, spent lunch laughing with Ominis over Sebastianâs latest disastrous attempt at sweet-talking Imelda into lending him her broom, and successfully avoided thinking too much about the letter that was supposed to be ash by now.
Everything was fine.
That was, until you walked into the Great Hall for dinner.
At first, everything seemed as it always wasâthe low hum of conversation, the clatter of cutlery against plates, the floating candles casting their soft golden glow over the long tables. Your stomach grumbled at the scent of roasted chicken and buttered bread, and you barely gave a thought to where you would sit as your gaze instinctively flicked to the Slytherin table.
And there he was.
Sebastian sat in his usual spot, right beside Ominis. You felt the familiar pull of his presence, the way you always did, like some unconscious part of you sought him out before you even realized it.
But then, something shifted.
Sebastian wasnât eating.
His hands were occupiedânot with a goblet or a fork, but with a piece of parchment, one he had just begun to unfold. His brow furrowed slightly as his fingers smoothed out the creases, his dark eyes scanning the words in front of him.
You barely noticed the way your heart slammed against your ribs.
Because you knew that letter.
You knew that parchment.
You knew what he was reading.
Time slowed to a crawl, your breath halting as you stood frozen in the doorway, the warmth of the Great Hall vanishing, replaced by a creeping cold that wrapped around your spine and sank its claws deep into your chest.
Sebastianâs expression went slack.
His lips parted slightly, his brows drawing together in something unreadable as his eyes flicked over the wordsâyour wordsâthe ones you had never intended for anyone, let alone him, to see.
Ominis was speaking beside him, his mouth moving, probably teasing him about something, but Sebastian wasnât responding. He wasnât reacting, wasnât moving. He was just reading.
Your stomach twisted violently, nausea rising in your throat as panic set in.
No, no, no, no, no.
Your breath hitched, your lungs seizing in panic as your mind racedâ He hasnât finished reading it yet. He canât have. Maybe I can get to him, grab it before heâ
But then his eyes lifted. And found yours. Everything inside you froze.
His face was unreadable, his dark gaze burning into yours with something too raw, too intense to decipher. And thenâ
Sebastian stood to his full height.
The parchment was still in his hands, crumpled slightly in his grip, like his fingers had tightened around it involuntarily. His mouth parted, as if he were about to say somethingâ
And that was when your body made its decision.
Run.
You spun on your heel and bolted.
You heard the scrape of Sebastianâs chair against the stone floor, the sharp inhale of Ominis beside him, the sudden uptick in murmurs as people took notice. But you couldnât focus on any of itâonly the sheer, overwhelming need to get out, to get away, to put as much distance between you and that letter as humanly possible.
Your robes billowed behind you as you pushed past a group of Ravenclaws near the entrance, ignoring their startled protests. You didnât even know where you were goingâonly that you had to move.
You barely made it into the corridor when you heard it.
âOi!â
Sebastianâs voice, sharp and demanding, echoed off the stone walls.
You risked a glance over your shoulder and immediately regretted it.
He was right behind you, his expression set in something fierceâdetermined. His grip was still tight around the parchment, his knuckles white, and oh, Merlin, he was gaining on you.
You whirled down a side hall, nearly colliding with a suit of armor as you ducked around a corner. The adrenaline was making your limbs feel weightless, your body moving on pure instinct. You knewâknewâthat running made you look guiltier, made it clear beyond a doubt that the letter was yours, but Sebastian knew your handwriting.
There was no talking your way out of this.
So you ran.
And he followed.
âBloody hell, will you stop running?â
No. Absolutely not.
Your heart threatened to claw its way up your throat as you rounded another corner, nearly losing your footing in your panic. You had no plan, no destinationâonly the singular, desperate urge to get away.
But Hogwarts was only so big.
And Sebastian Sallow was faster than you.
So you did the only thing you could think to doâyou ran for the nearest exit.
The heavy wooden doors of the castle loomed ahead, and you threw yourself at them, bursting into the crisp evening air.
The temperature was cooler out here, the autumn wind biting at your skin, but you barely noticed. The sky was deep blue, streaked with the last remnants of sunset, the grounds bathed in the soft glow of torchlight.
And still, you ran.
The wide expanse of the courtyard gave you spaceâspace to sprint, to put real distance between you and the boy who held your heart in his hands, ink-stained and utterly exposed.
But thenâ
âOh, for Merlinâs sakeââ
A heavy force collided into you from behind, and suddenly, the ground was no longer beneath your feet.
A startled gasp left your lips as the world tilted, and thenâ
You hit the grass, hard.
The weight of another body pressed down on you, solid and warm, pinning you beneath them.
For a moment, everything stilled.
The only sounds were your own ragged breaths, your pulse roaring in your ears, and the undeniable, shuddering exhale from the boy who had just tackled you to the ground.
Sebastian.
You felt him shift above you, his hands braced on either side of your head, his chest rising and falling as he caught his breath.
The letter was still clutched in his fist, crumpled and worn from the chase.
And thenâ
âAre you absolutely mental?â His voice was breathless, frustratedâwild.
You flinched, panic curling up your spine, your body trembling beneath him.
âSebastian,â you gasped, trying to squirm away, but he wasnât having it.
âNo.â His tone shook, his grip tightening on the ground beside you. âNo, weâre going to talk about this.â
Your heart lurched. No, no, no, this wasnât happening.
You squeezed your eyes shut, every fiber of your being screaming at you to run again, to somehow undo all of this.
But you were trapped.
Not just by his weightânot just by the way his arms and legs bracketed yours, caging you inâbut by the look on his face.
His eyes.
Dark and intense, searching yours like he was trying to find an answer you hadnât given him yet.
You swallowed, chest rising and falling too quickly, your hands curling into the grass beneath you as you tried to breathe.
Sebastianâs grip on the parchment tightened. âThisââ his voice was lower now, unreadable, ââthis isnât a joke, is it?â
You swallowed, trying to force words up your throat. Your lips parted.
âIââ Your voice cracked. âI didnâtââ
âBecause if it is,â he continued, his gaze darkening, intensifying, âitâs a cruel one.â
Your breath hitched, your body locking up beneath him.
A cruel joke?
"W-what?" you breathed,
Sebastian's grip on the letter was so tight now that the parchment crinkled loudly between his fingers. His other hand was still braced beside your head, his body caging you in, radiating heat, tensionâsomething dangerous.
"You heard me," he said, his voice rough, barely controlled. "Is this a joke? Some sort ofâofâprank?"
The very thought made your stomach twist. How could heâhow could he even thinkâ
"Of course not!" The words came out more forcefully than you intended, your panic spiking.
His jaw clenched. "Then why the fuck did you run?"
"Because!" You spluttered, incredulous. "You-you were- how the hell did you even get that?!"
Sebastian let out a sharp laugh, shaking the crumpled parchment between his fingers. âHow did I get it? Oh, I donât know, maybe because it was sent in the mail?!â His gaze burned into yours. âAnd it had my bloody name on it?!
"But I never sent it! Iâ" The words caught in your throat, a frantic, garbled mess of emotion and panic. You couldn't even think straight, not with him right there, not with his weight pressing you down, his breath still ragged from chasing you.
Sebastian scoffed, shaking his head in disbelief. "Oh, so it just magically appeared in the post? Someone sent it, and seeing as itâs your handwriting, your wordsâyour fucking confessionâIâd say that narrows down the list of suspects."
Your mouth opened and closed, but your brain refused to supply a logical defense.
You had left it out.
And your roommatesâoh Merlin, they must have seen it, assumed you had forgotten to send it, and done you the favor of making sure it got delivered.
Your breath shuddered as the weight of it all crashed over you, the full, awful realization that everything was ruined.
Tears burned behind your eyes, hot and humiliating, and before you could stop them, they spilled over, sliding down your temples into the grass beneath you.
âIâm sorry,â you choked out, voice thick and uneven. âIâI never meant for you to see it. I was going to burn it, I swearââ
Sebastianâs entire body jerked like youâd just hexed him.
His angerâsharp and scorching only moments agoâimmediately cracked, giving way to something horrified, something panicked.
âOhâfuck,â he breathed, his grip on the parchment loosening as his weight shifted. âShit, noâdonâtââ
And then, in a blur of movement, he was off you, scrambling backward like heâd just been hit with a Stunning Spell.
You sucked in a breath at the sudden loss of warmth, blinking up at him through wet lashes as he kneeled beside you, hands lifting slightly like he wanted to reach for you but didnât know how.
âIâm not mad at you,â he rushed out, voice hoarse, urgent. âI swear, Iâm notâI justâfuck, I didnât mean toââ
You buried your face in your hands, curling in on yourself as the shame closed in.
âNo, itâs my fault,â you rasped, words strangled and raw. âI should have justâkept my feelings to myself. I should have never written it down, I donât know why Iââ
"Hey, heyâ" His voice was softer now, no longer demanding, no longer frantic. A warm hand hovered near your shoulder, hesitant, but you were already spiraling.
"IâMerlin, why did I even listen to Witch Weekly?" You let out a miserable, watery laugh, rubbing furiously at your face as you triedâand failedâto control the mess of emotion in your chest.
Sebastian made a noise, almost like a pained laugh, but his eyes were still frantic, still burning with something raw and unsteady.
âSo... itâs true?â His voice was quieter now, rough, but no less intense. âWhat you wrote?â
His fingers finally touched your wristânot enough to pull your hands away, but enough that you felt it. Enough that it sent a ripple of awareness through you.
âTell me,â he murmured, and you could hear the strain in his voice now.
Slowly, painfully, you lowered your hands from your face.
Sebastianâs gaze burned into you, desperate and unreadable.
Your throat was tight, your breath uneven.
But you couldnât lie.
So you nodded.
A sharp exhale left him, his hand dropping from your wrist to clench in the grass beside him. His head tilted back slightly, his jaw tight, his Adamâs apple bobbing as he swallowed hard.
"Fuck," he muttered under his breath, running a hand through his hair again.
You winced. "I know," you whispered, curling your arms around yourself. "I know. I'm sorry. You can justâjust forget about it, okay? I know it's probably weird, and you don't feel the same, and I justâI'll move on, alright? I canâI can pretend this never happened, if that's what you wantâ"
Sebastian let out a sharp, disbelieving laugh.
And then he lunged for you,
Before you could even react, he was on you again, wrapping his arms around you and pulling you into him. The force of it knocked the breath from your lungs, your hands flying up to brace against his chest as he rolled, flipping the both of you over until you were the one on top, sprawled against the solid warmth of his body.
A startled noise left your lips as he crushed you into his chest, his arms locking around you like a vice. His heartbeat pounded beneath your cheek, wild and erratic, his breathing uneven.
"You're such an idiot," he muttered into your hair, his voice rough, still shaking with disbelief.
Your brain was struggling to keep up.
"W-whatâ?"
"You think I donât feel the same?" He let out a breathless, almost hysterical laugh, tightening his hold around you. "Merlin, do you even hear yourself?"
Your stomach flipped, something warm and dangerous flooding your veins.
Sebastian's grip didnât loosen. If anything, it tightened, his hand splaying wide against the small of your back, pressing you even closer to him.
"Youâre not moving on," he said fiercely. "Youâre mine."
Your breath hitched. "Wh-what?"
Sebastian groaned, his head dropping back against the grass, his fingers flexing against you like he was barely holding himself together. "Fuck, do you even know what you've done to me?"
You swallowed hard, your fingers still curled in his robes, every inch of you hyper-aware of just how close you were.
"Iâ"
"You've wrecked me," he muttered, almost like an accusation. "I thoughtâI thought I was losing my mind. You had to know, you had to have noticedâ"
"Noticed what?" you whispered, your voice barely there.
Sebastian let out a shaky breath, and then his hands slid up your back, one curling around the base of your skull, the other gripping your waist, firm.
"Noticed how fucking obsessed I am with you."
Your body locked up.
He flipped you again, faster this time, pressing you down into the grass beneath him, his weight heavy over yours. His breath was ragged, his expression wild, his eyesâ
His eyes.
Dark, burning, hungry.
"I love you," he murmured, his voice almost pleading, like he needed you to hear it, to understand. "Iâve loved you for so fucking long."
"Youâ" The words tangled in your throat, your hands fisting in the fabric of his robes. "You don't have to say that just because youâbecause you feel badâ"
A sharp sound left his throatâsomething between a laugh and a growl, something raw and frustrated.
"Are you serious right now?" His grip on your waist tightened, his fingers pressing into your skin through the fabric of your robes. "You think Iâm saying this out of pity?"
You flinched, shaking your head quickly. "I justâI donât understandâ"
"Fuck," he muttered under his breath, dropping his forehead to yours for a fleeting second, like he needed the contact just to ground himself. "You really donât know, do you?"
Your breath was uneven, your mind spinning. "Know what?"
Sebastian exhaled sharply, and thenâ
He kissed you.
It wasnât soft. It wasnât hesitant. It was a claim.
His mouth crashed against yours, desperate, consuming, like heâd been starving for this.
A shocked noise slipped from you, but he swallowed it, pressing closer, deeper, one hand sliding into your hair while the other anchored itself at your waist.
Heat flooded through you, overwhelming and intoxicating, sending shivers down your spine.
You had imagined this beforeâgod, you had imagined this in the dark, alone, staring at your canopy and aching for himâbut nothing could have prepared you for the way he felt.
The way he took. The way he gave.
You barely had time to catch your breath before he tilted your head back and kissed you againâharder, deeper, like he was trying to ruin you.
Like he needed you as badly as you needed him.
"Still think I'm lying?" he murmured against your lips, his voice a rough, wicked thing.
You shook your head, dazed, your fingers curling into his robes as you pulled him closer, your answer slipping out between gasps.
"N-no."
Sebastian smirked against your mouth, his grip tightening.
"Good," he breathed. "Because I'm never letting you go."

âLet me get this straight- I called you my kindred spirit within the first day of meeting you, flirted with you in DADA, checked your out after you beat my ass in duelling, always flirted with you, said I needed you, took the fall for you in the restricted section, showed you the undercroft and you STILL think that was platonic?!â

All Youâve Done
Pairing: Ominis Gaunt x Reader (gender neutral)
Word Count: 12790
Warnings: Angst, Fluff, Hurt/Comfort, Like a hint of spice
Description: Buckle up kids. This got waaaaayyy longer than Iâd planned, and Iâve taken a lot of liberties with the story. I envision Ominisâs wand working like a topographical map, kind of like Toph in Avatar The Last Airbender. Anyway, mainly follows Sebastianâs quest line.
âYou got a staring problem?â
You were violently ripped from your thoughts by a low angry voice. Tearing your eyes from the other side of the room, you look up at the boy glaring at you from the end of the table. Furrowing your brow, you tilt your head in challenge, eyebrows rising. âExcuse you?â
You watch his hackles rise and his scowl deepen, before letting out an irritated huff. âI asked if you have a fucking staring problem.â
You give him a once over, trying to figure out where youâd seen him before. You vaguely remember dueling him in Defense Against the Dark Arts, but were struggling to produce his name. He was in Slytherin, and you were pretty sure he had an interesting reputation, but that was all you knew at the moment.
Youâd met so many people in your first few days here, who could really blame you for blanking on a name? Squinting harder, you looked at the smattering of freckles across his face and wild brunette locks, hoping theyâd trigger your memory. He bristled at your intense gaze, mistaking your concentration for hostility, and refused to back down.
Bringing your hand up, you repeatedly tapped the center of your forehead with your index finger, trying to summon his name to your mind. S something. Ssss-tanley. Steven. Sylis?
Heâd started to fidget at your odd behavior, eyes darting questioningly to Natty as she sat beside you. Natty had seen you do this before, and laughed at Sebastianâs bewildered look, telling him to give you a moment.
âSebastian!â You snap your fingers and point at him with a triumphant look on your face. âIâm sorry, uh, what did you want again?â
Suddenly remembering why heâd approached you in the first place, his face darkened once more. Leaning down, he gets right in your face, blocking your line of sight from your previous fixation. âYouâve been staring at Ominis for a particularly long time, and Iâd like to know why.â You return his scowl and roll your eyes at his aggressive display.
âDonât see why itâs any of your business, freckles. Canât someone just enjoy the view in peace?â Your dismissive tone does little to dissuade him. Sebastian narrows his eyes, and doesnât budge.
âI would think twice about messing with Ominis, if I were you. House Slytherin is not an enemy you want.â Rolling your eyes, you let out an exasperated sigh and stand up, brushing past him. You ignore his irritated calls, striding towards the blondeâs table. Ominis sat hunched over, frustratedly staring at the leaves in his hands. You purposefully make a noisy approach, so as not to spook the blind boy with your presence. Stopping next to his chair, you take a breath before you speak.
âHello.â
Ominis slowly raises his head and does his best to look in your general direction, the look of frustration staying on his face. â...Hello. Can I help you?â
You smile at the warry tone and attempt to make your voice as sincere as possible. âI noticed youâve been staring at these leaves for quite awhile. I was wondering if youâd want some help withâŠwhatever, it is youâre doing?â
A look of indignation crosses his features and he sticks his nose up at you. âI donât need anything, thank you very much. Just because Iâm blind doesnât mean that Iâm incapable.â
Merlinâs beard, Slytherin boys were a prickly bunch. Sighing tiredly, you consider just turning around and walking away, but instead cross your arms and lean your hip against the table.
âI didnât ask if you NEED any help. I asked you if you WANT any help. Itâs fine if you donât, but youâve been sitting here fondling leaves for the better part of an hour. I assumed the wrinkle in your forehead would become permanent if I didnât put you out of your misery. I see that I was mistakenâ Without waiting for a response you turn to leave, only taking a few steps before he calls out to you.
âWait.â You stop and turn, raising an eyebrow expectantly even though he canât see it. He shuffles his feet and looks down at the floor, mumbling begrudgingly. âI have to write 5 inches on the medicinal and physical differences between Mallowsweet and Dittany for Herbology, and Iâm having trouble with the physical portion. Someone was supposed to be here half an hour ago to help, but he still hasnât shown up.â
Gazing over your shoulder, you could see the smoke coming out of Sebastianâs ears as he scowled at you. Natty hid an amused smile behind her hand, eyes darting between the both of you. Taunting him, you give him a wink and a sly smirk, resisting the urge to chuckle as you hear him curse you out from across the room.
Facing Ominis, you sit on the table and put your feet on the chair next to him. âSo, Dittany grows on long stalks, ending in bright pink flowers. The leaves are smooth, and more circular, than Mallowsweet.â His attention had been drawn away, as heâd no doubt heard Sebastianâs string of expletives across the room, but swung his head in your direction as you spoke.
Grabbing a Dittany leaf, you gently take his wrist, ignoring the way he stiffens at the contact. You place the leaf in his hand, letting him feel the edges for a moment before moving on.
âMallowsweet on the other hand, ends in a point and has small ridges along the edge. The leaves progressively become more yellow, the closer they get to the cluster of orange flowers at the top. Unlike Dittany, Mallowsweet grows in short clumps, the stalks close together.â You pick up a Mallowsweet leaf and tap the back of his other hand with your knuckle, signaling that he should turn his palm over for the second leaf. He does so willingly, and takes a second to feel both leaves simultaneously.
This whole time youâd been focused on describing the leaves as accurately as possible, and only now turned your gaze to his face. He seemed to be deep in thought, features unreadable, his eyes pointedly turned toward his hands.
He turned his face towards you and opened his mouth to speak, but was interrupted by Sebastian's untimely arrival. âAnd what is going on over here?â
Apparently heâd had enough of watching from afar and decided to make himself known. You rolled your eyes at him once more and hopped down from the edge of the table. âOh, there he is, youâre late. Just a little homework help, donât get your panties in a twist.â You could hear Sebastian grumbling about how he doesnât wear panties as you walked away. What you didnât see was Ominis grabbing his wand and pointing it in your direction, trying to discern any identifying features from your retreating figure.

The next few weeks flew by as you dove head first into your classes, doing your best to catch up to your fellow fifth years, as per Professor Weasleyâs expectations.
You were in the middle of Potions class, finishing up your Wiggenweld brew, when Professor Sharp walked up behind you quietly. Corking the bottle, you turn and face him, silently handing him the potion with a pleased smile. He took the vial just as silently and inspected it thoroughly, examining the liquid and smelling the contents. Grunting in approval, he replaced the cork and handed it back to you. âImpressive. Wiggenweld is not an easy potion, and youâve executed it exceptionally well.â
Your smile grows a bit as you thank him for his kind words. He gestures for you to follow him back to his desk with a slight nod of his head. The two of you make your way over, and you stop at the front, as he circles around to stand behind his chair. âProfessor Weasley has asked me to give you extra assignments to help you catch up with the rest of the fifth years. Iâd like you to try your hand at the Edurus potion. You can find the ingredients in my office. You may use them for today, but you will be expected to provide your own in the future. Weâll see if your Wiggenweld was actual skill, or just pure luck.â
You smile as you thank him again, making your way to his office. As you walk over, you can see Garreth Weasley lurking conspicuously by the door. Thereâd been many a conversation in the halls about Garrethâs failed brews, and how he often roped unsuspecting students into his schemes. Uninterested in being involved, you did your best to avoid eye contact, walking quickly to the office door. Before you could escape, he stopped you, a mischievous smile lighting up his face as he spoke your name. âDid I hear correctly that youâve gotten permission to go into Sharpâs office?â
Groaning internally, you close your eyes before turning to face him. âYes, Garreth. Why do you want to know?â
His eyes grew bigger as the mischief turned to giddy excitement. âThatâs great! How would you like to be part of something truly spectacular? Iâm working on a new potion, and thereâs just one final ingredient before itâs finished!â You open your mouth to deny his request, but he continues without letting you get a word out. âWhat is this ingredient you may ask? A Fwooper feather! Sharp has one in his office, and it would be a great help if you could grab it for me while you're there.â
Shaking your head, you let out a large sigh before looking him in the eyes. âGarreth, Iâm not stealing from Professor Sharp for you.â Garreth began waving his hands back and forth frantically, a panicked look on his face.
âNo, no, no, listen. Itâll be fine! Fwooper feathers arenât THAT valuable. He wonât even miss it! Please, do this for me? Just this once, I swear!â
You pressed your lips into a thin line as you regarded the red head. He was pouting, giving you the biggest puppy eyes youâd ever seen. It was tempting to just give in and get him the feather, if only to spare you the crocodile tears. Ultimately, you decided that youâd rather stay on Sharpâs good side, and that Garreth should really focus on actually learning to brew potions instead of his semi dangerous concoctions.
âLook, Garreth. I can appreciate yourâŠcreative vision, but I am not willing to compromise my current standing in Professor Sharpâs good graces. Youâre going to have to find another way to get that Fwooper feather.â You turn to continue your way into the office and feel a hand grab your sleeve.
âWait! I promise you wonât get in trouble! I just really need-â You gave him a stern glare and whirled on him.
âGarreth. I will not be pressured into doing something I donât want to. Iâm all for breaking some rules every now and then, but stealing from a professor I respect and want to learn from, is not something Iâm willing to do at this juncture. Please, drop it.â Unprepared for your ire, Garreth took a step back in shock, before slinking away in dejection. You felt a little bad, but it was for his own good. It would serve him to be told no every once in a while.
Quickly gathering the ingredients, you start walking back to your potions table, having spent way too much class time arguing with Garreth. You passed behind Ominis sitting at his own station, still trying to perfect his Wiggenweld, when he accidently knocked his wand off the counter. It hit the floor with a small clunk, and Ominis scrunched his eyebrows together, leaning down to retrieve it.
He must have misjudged where the counter started, and was about to put his whole hand into his scalding potion pot. Before you could think, you grabbed his wrist and yanked it away from the cauldron, burning the back of your hand on the lip.
You immediately went to apologize for grabbing him so suddenly, when he ripped his wrist from your grasp. âWhat the hell do you think youâre doing?!â
Opening your mouth, you attempt to explain what happened. Ominis heard none of it and continued to yell, drawing the attention of the rest of the class.
âYou think itâs funny to just grab someone like that?! Youâve got some fucking nerve-â You caught Sebastian stalking over out of the corner of your eye, a dark look on his face. The entire class was giving this spectacle their undivided attention, heaven forbid you had one uneventful potions class. Wanting nothing more than to finish this potion and leave, you interrupt Ominis as he accuses you of purposefully knocking his wand over.
âOminis.â Upon hearing your voice, he clamps his mouth shut, a look of surprise and something else crossing his face. Sebastian comes to a halt next to you, teeth bared, but you ignore him and continue talking.
âYou were about to put your hand into your boiling cauldron. I didnât think that youâd particularly want to take a trip to the Hospital Wing today. I apologize for startling you.â Picking up his wand, you place it carefully onto the table, still within arms reach, but far enough that it wonât fall again. Sebastian bashfully scratched the back of his neck in embarrassment, as you brushed past him. Ignoring the stares of your classmates, you quietly brewed the Edurus potion, face carefully neutral.
Upon finishing, you brought it over to Professor Sharp. He gave it the same level of scrutiny heâd given your Wiggenweld, grunting in approval when it was up to his standards. You turned to follow the other students out of the room, when you heard Professor Sharp clear his throat. âI appreciate you denying Mr. Weasleyâs request earlier, not many are able to resist his particular brand of...persuasion. He would do well to focus on actual potions while heâs still a student.â Letting out an amused huff at what he meant by âpersuasionâ, you bid him goodbye, continuing on with the rest of your classes.
ââââââââââââââ-
You hated that you had to ask Sebastian for help. The smug satisfaction ever present on his face as you snuck through the Restricted Section, searching for any wisps of ancient magic. Heâd been needling you endlessly about what you were after, but you successfully evaded his questioning each time.
Sebastian was too busy trying to annoy an answer out of you to notice Peeves popping out of a bookshelf, threatening to tell the librarian about your late night escapades. Fearing the consequences awaiting you if you were caught, you allowed the familiar pull of ancient magic to guide your wand. A book flew off the shelf, opening on its own, hovering before you. Peeves started floating away, taunting Sebastian with your impending detention, when your wand pulsed and dragged Peeves screaming into the pages. The book snapped shut and shuddered once, before calmly putting itself back on the shelf.
The both of you blinked at the shelf silently, holding your breath, before staring blankly at each other. Sebastian opened his mouth to ask, closing it as you held up a hand, shaking your head. You turn away from him, sensing that you needed to travel deeper into the Restricted Section, knowing he couldnât come along.
âWell, it looks like you have free reign of the Restricted Section this evening. You can poke around to your heart's content.â He looked at you quizzically as you started heading down the stairs leading deeper below the school.
âYouâre going alone? Why canât I come? What about Peeves?â You stop and give him a gentle smile over your shoulder.
âDonât worry about Peeves. Heâll find his way out.â Probably.
You turn to face him fully on the stairs, your smile widening. âI figured youâd want a free evening to peruse the books, uninhibited. Donât worry about me. Thank you for getting me this far. It wasnât completely terrible.â
He gave you a wide, boyish grin. âI think I miss judged you.â He gave you a parting wave, before sneaking off to bury himself in as many illicit tomes as possible. Smiling to yourself, you continue your way downwards, excited to discover what secrets lay so far beneath Hogwarts.
âââââââââââââ
After your jaunt through the library, you discovered that you rather enjoyed Sebastianâs company. Contrary to your first impression, he actually had a working brain between those ears, and he knew how to use it. Your friendship slowly grew over the passing weeks, until finally, he sent you an owl requesting your presence in the Defense Against the Dark Arts Tower.
Meeting him late that night, he shared with you his dearly kept secret, known only to him, Ominis, and now you. You guessed he still felt a little guilty about his behavior during your early interactions, thus offering the Undercroft in apology. The only stipulation being no one, especially Ominis, would know.
Swearing to guard his secret, you left the Undercroft, hoping to catch a few hours of sleep before your morning classes.
As fate would have it, youâre immediately cornered by the last person you wanted to see.
âHello Sebastian.â Wide eyed, you stare at Ominis, unblinking. Perhaps if you didnât breathe, he wouldnât notice you. Instead assuming heâd just missed Sebastian entering the Undercroft.
It would seem that luck had abandoned you, his eyes narrowing at the lack of response. âHold on. You arenât Sebastian at all, are you? Did you just come from the Undercroft?!â
Biting your lip, you consider your options. You could always lie, and say you stumbled upon the room by accident. You could come clean, and admit Sebastianâs guilt. You very briefly even considered just making a break for it, praying Ominis wouldnât catch you. You had no good options, least of all one that would end with the three of you on good terms.
Ominisâs brow twitched impatiently, wand pointed directly at your chest. You supposed that the blonde boy already thought pretty poorly of you, seeing how your previous interaction ended. Why not give him one more reason?
âIâŠdid.â You answered cautiously, unsure where you were going, letting your lips take you.
Ominisâs scowl deepened, a haughty sneer placing itself on his lips. âSebastian showed you didnât he? That fool. I canât believe he would-â
âRelax, Ominis. Sebastian didnât give up your secret, umâŠwillingly.â What were you saying? What did that even mean? Before you could say anything else, Ominis stopped talking and narrowed his eyes dangerously.
âWhat do you mean by that.â There was no question in his voice, only a frosty demand. You resisted the shiver tickling at your spine, swallowing the need to take a few steps back.
âI saw Sebastian duck in here earlier and followed him. He- uh, heâs not as sneaky as he thinks.â You had absolutely no control over the words coming out of your mouth. Cringing internally at your horrid acting, you wondered how Ominis hadnât seen right through you.
âDonât worry. I promised to keep the Undercroft a secretâŠfor aâŠa price?â WHAT. Why would you say that? Why would you say that? You watched his chest heave in anger, latching onto the implication of your threat. It seemed heâd rather believe you the villain, than consider his friend's betrayal.
âWhat. Price.â There was something in his voice that sent a chill through your bones. Something hissed behind his lips, sinister and cold, almost too faint for you to hear. You felt like a rabbit cornered by a cobra, nowhere to go but through him.
Swallowing, you steeled yourself, resolving to end this interaction quickly so you could wallow in self pity from the comfort of your bed. âNothing much, just a favor. No need to concern yourself over it.â You stupidly give him your back as you slide past, wanting to bolt from this absolute disaster, but forcing your legs to maintain a casual pace.
âIf you tell anyone about this place, I will make sure the rest of your time at this school is a living hell. My father is good friends with Professor Black, and I will not hesitate to exploit that connection if I need to. Not even your precious Professor Fig will be able to save you.â
Humming lowly, you continued down the hall without looking back. You could faintly hear Ominis snarl in rage, as he opened the door roughly to question Sebastian. The sound was drowned out by the whirling thoughts in your head. What had you done? You couldnât have created a bigger mess if youâd tried. There was no way you could come back from this, no way Ominis would want to be anywhere near you. You didnât even know if youâd be allowed around Sebastian anymore, knowledge of the Undercroft not worth the loss of a new friend.
Resigning yourself to lie in the bed youâd made, your legs trudged the rest of the way to your dorm. Wondering what the morning would have in store.
ââââââââââââââ-
Whatever had been said that night between the two, Sebastian never brought it up.
Instead, he invited you to Feldcroft to meet his sister, and uncle. Which was a less than pleasant experience, to put it lightly. You would see Ominis around the halls and in classes, but you wouldnât get much more than a withering glare in your general direction. Sebastian reassured you that he just needed a little time to cool down, but his seemingly permanent scowl lines told a different story.
You took some comfort in knowing that Sebastian and Ominisâs friendship improved greatly, often seeing them walking together between classes. It brought a smile to your face every time Sebastian would wave to you enthusiastically when Ominis wasnât looking, quickly putting his arm down when the blonde would face his direction. Things continued on like this for a while, settling into this weird passive aggressive routine you werenât sure how to break.
ââââââââââââââââ-
Ominis was pissed. Ever since the Undercroft, heâd made sure you knew how displeased he was in your presence. Heâd spent the rest of that night cursing himself for being so foolish, having believed you to be kind, just as the rest of the student body. After his outburst in potions class, heâd been contemplating ways to apologize, wanting to give you a better impression of him. Not anymore. After that night, he couldnât even stand to hear your voice.
Your loud laugh would echo through the halls, instantly souring his mood. He questioned Sebastian constantly about the favor he owed you, but was brushed off every time. The brunette remaining tight lipped, telling him not to worry about it. In truth, he really did owe you, for taking the full brunt of Ominisâs wrath. Sebastian planned to come clean once Ominis had settled, but it seemed to be taking longer than expected.
Ominis couldnât let it go. He began lurking around corners, listening to the whispers of other students. He listened intently for any other favors you were owed, paying particularly close attention to those youâd been seen with frequently. Nothing. All people ever did was sing your praises.
He sat alone on the second floor of the library, hiding between the tall stacks. For once, trying to avoid all human contact, his nerves frayed and mind tired.
Low murmurs were filtering in from the next aisle over. Ominis sat, uninterested, until an unmistakable laugh caught his attention. His ears perked up, instantly recognizing your carefree giggles, followed by Nattyâs light scolding to be quiet. Ominis slowly stood from his seat, creeping to stand just around the corner, out of sight but in better ear shot.
Once the giggling from the both of you faded, you stood in comfortable silence, returning your borrowed books to their respective shelves. Standing there, it didnât seem to Ominis that you were going to say anything more, taking a step away to find another hiding spot. Just as he lifted his foot, Nattyâs voice quietly broke your companionable silence.
âThereâs something Iâve been meaning to ask you, my friend.â Her voice was quiet, as to keep her question private, but not quiet enough to escape Ominisâs sharp hearing. You hum in acknowledgement, awaiting Nattyâs inquiry.
âWhat on Earth did you do to piss off Ominis Gaunt so badly?â Natty never minced her words, always opting to get straight to the point, something you truly appreciated about her.
Ominis could hear your breathing stop, before heaving a big sigh and plopping down in a chair. His wand pulsed, and he could tell that youâd put your head in your hands, face directed to the floor.
âYou noticed that, huh?â
Natty laughed jovially, ignoring your obvious distress. âWho hasnât? He certainly isnât trying to be subtle.â
He could hear you sit back, your voice muffled by the hands covering your face. ââŠitâs embarrassing.â
Natty nudged you to continue. Sighing, you dropped your arms, hands slapping your thighs loudly. âSebastianâŠtold me something he shouldnât have, and the only stipulation was that Ominis wouldnât find out. Unfortunately, as if by magic, he caught me almost immediately. Which, believe me, was already bad enough, but then I had to make it worse by lying to him.â
Natty hummed, waiting for you to continue. âHe was so angry, and Iâd just promised Sebastian Iâd keep his secret, you know, a secret. Weâd just started really being friends and I didnât want to jeopardize that, so I panicked and just said the first thing that came to mind.â
Nattyâs brow lifted. âWhich wasâŠ?â Your head fell back into your hands, your words becoming slightly muffled.
âI told him that Iâd keep their secret for a price. A price, Natty! Like I was some kind of Ashwinder demanding ransom. What the fuck was I thinking?â You groaned, and Natty remained silent as you rambled, the words spilling out of your mouth.
âYou donât understand. He was so scary. I was nearly pissing myself the whole time. It took everything in me to not sprint away. Ranrokâs loyalists have nothing on Ominis when heâs well and truly put out.â You paused briefly to take a breath before charging forward. âI just- I just kept talking. I couldnât stop. And my acting was so bad. I really donât understand how he even believed me.â
Natty attempted to hide her smile with her hand. Ominis could vaguely hear you smack her lightly, crying that it wasnât funny, but his mind was elsewhere.
He suddenly felt very guilty about how heâd treated you that night, now recognizing your obvious discomfort and nervousness. Why had Sebastian let you take the blame for him? Ominis thought back to his boarish behavior the last few weeks, angry at his blatant hostility and lack of attention. If heâd taken a moment to actually consider the situation, he might not have wasted so much energy hating you. He hoped youâd be willing to forgive him, but didnât have very high hopes.
ââââââââââââââââ-
It took a couple days before Ominis gathered enough courage to approach you, but broke down after hearing you laugh with Sebastian before Potions. Youâd noticed his sudden change in behavior, because of course you did. He seemed more withdrawn than normal, barely ever facing your direction. His newfound stoicism had begun to worry you, and asking Sebastian had been no help. Heâd simply shrugged and grumbled something about Ominis being too clever for his own good.
Acquiring your extra assignments from Professor Sharp, you headed to the Room of Requirement with your newly rescued beasts, excited to show them their vivarium.
Clearing the classroom threshold, you spotted Ominis, arms crossed, leaning against the wall conspicuously. Heâd been avoiding you the last few days, so it was odd to see him openly waiting around. You paused your steps and regarded him. He looked a little worse for wear, but otherwise seemed fine, physically at least. Approaching him cautiously, you stop a healthy distance away. âHello, Ominis. Did- Did you need something?â
His fingers tighten on his sleeve, brows scrunching. You thought that youâd maybe been mistaken and you were only aggravating him further.
He didnât turn his head to face you, but his eyes looked in your direction, trying harder than usual to pinpoint your location. âYou can drop the act now.â
You fidget with your fingers and bite your lip, looking up at him through your lashes.
âI, um, I donât-â
âDonât even bother. Sebastian already told me about your little charade. You might as well stop while I still have a modicum of patience.â
You sighed, shoulders slumping, letting the nervous tension leave your body. âYou know, itâs just like him to tell on me and ruin all my hard work.â You glance at Ominis briefly, noticing his expression had morphed into something like amusement, but it just as likely could have been a trick of the light. âSo you know, but you still seem upset?â
Huffing at you, he rolled his eyes and pushed off the wall, keeping his arms crossed as he faced you fully. âOf course Iâm still upset. I donât enjoy being lied to, no matter how noble the reason. Iâm perfectly capable of making my own judgments, thank you very much.â You looked at the ground and flattened your lips into a thin line, nodding in agreement before remembering that he couldnât see you.
âYeah ok, I deserve that. Iâm sorry.â You watched him shake his head and turn his head, looking pointedly down the hall.
âYes, well, please refrain in the future. Itâs going to be very difficult spending time together if I canât trust your word.â Slight color rose to his cheeks as he realized the possible implication of his words. âSince youâre friends with Sebastian and all. I imagine youâll start frequenting the Undercroft more often now that your farce has been discovered.â
You chuckled and smiled at him. âOf course. Iâll try not to make a habit of it.â He nodded once, and turned to swiftly walk down the hall.
Youâd thought that was the end of it, but are surprised when Ominis stops abruptly, calling to you over his shoulder. âI apologize for my behavior the other night, and everyday since then. It was rather rude and unnecessary.â Without waiting for a response, he walks off down the hall. You smile after him and continue on with the rest of your day, feeling lighter than you had in weeks.
ââââââââââââââââ
You did, in fact, visit the Undercroft more frequently after that. Mostly with Sebastian, but Ominis was slowly making a habit of accompanying the brunette when the two of you made plans. Heâd also started showing up to your study table without so much as a greeting, simply sitting down and pulling out his assignments for the day. Today was one of those days. You glanced up from your Herbology homework to see Ominis making a beeline for your table. Smiling to yourself, you watch him approach, waiting for him to be fully seated before greeting him.
âOminis.â You only get a hum of acknowledgement in return, before you both turn your attention to your respective assignments. An hour passes in comfortable silence, only interrupted by the clock tower signaling the start of a new hour. Youâd planned to practice your spell work in the Undercroft after the library, and started packing your things to head out. Glancing at Ominis, you hesitate for only a moment before circling around to his side of the table, leaning down next to him.
âOminis.â His head turns slightly in your direction, signaling that you had his attention without looking away from his enchanted quill. âIâm heading to the Undercroft for a bit. Care to join me?â You lean away and watch him consider your offer, before quietly disenchanting his quill and following you out of the library.
The walk to the Undercroft was done in comfortable silence, occasionally bumping shoulders on the way. He led the way down to his secret room, making sure no one had seen your entrance before closing the door securely. He headed for the center of the room, casually discarding his robe on a lounge chair on the way. Youâd just crossed the threshold when he whipped around without warning. âLevioso.â
Instinctively, you shout Protego, his spell bouncing off the shield harmlessly. You look at him bewildered, about to ask what had gotten into him, when he whipped two more spells at you in quick succession. Dodging one and shielding against the other, you cast Stupify, only for him to roll out of the way effortlessly. âYou know, youâll never stand a chance against dark wizards if all you do is run away.â
âOminis, what is happening right now? Did I do something to upset you?â He huffed and rolled his eyes, still brandishing his wand in your direction.
âDid you not come here to practice your spells?â He shot off another basic cast without warning. You leapt out of the way just in time, the spell hitting the wall behind you.
âI mean, I did, I jus- oh shit! uh, I wasnât expecting to- fuck! Immediately find myself in a duel.â You continue to tuck and roll, as Ominis quickly fires a few more spells your way. A cocky smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth, giving you the sense that he was only playing with you at the moment.
âYou think Sebastian became so good at dueling by accident? Heâs only considered the best because I donât care to waste my time playing in Lucanâs little club. Iâd wipe the floor with my eyes closed.â You barked out a surprised laugh, almost costing you your robes as a ball of fire came hurtling towards you. Ominisâs smirk grew into a wicked smile. Your eyes lingered a bit too long on his lips as you circled around each other slowly.
âYou should add âcomedianâ to your long list of talents.â
âIs it comedy, or just honesty?â
âMmm, humble too.â This time you take the attack, casting Depulso, attempting to knock him prone. He threw up his shield and cast Stupify in retaliation, hitting you in the chest.
You stumble a bit, and scramble to regain your balance. Before you could react, Ominis cast Expelliarmus, ripping your wand from your hand. He followed with Accio, yanking you across the room towards him before your wand finished falling. Spinning, you land directly in front of him, feet wobbling as you hit the ground.
An arm snakes around your waist and tugs you forward, steadying you. You feel the point of a wand lightly touch your throat, and a low amused rumble come from the chest pressing against you. Looking up at Ominisâs face, you notice heâd closed his eyes at some point during your sparring, a pleased smile resting comfortably on his lips. Your mouth hangs open as you gape up at him, mind reeling at how good he looks like this. Relaxed and happy, if not a little cocky. You search for something to say, anything, when he parts his lips.
âI win.â His voice is barely above a whisper, his smile growing at your indignant huff.
âYou cheated. That wasnât a fair fight.â His arm tightens ever so slightly around you as another chuckle escapes him.
âThey never are. I even gave you a handicap, and you still lost.â He opened his eyes as you clicked your tongue in annoyance, eyes crinkling around the edges as you lightly smacked his arm.
âIt doesnât count as a handicap if youâre not actually restricting yourself, you ass.â He barked out a laugh and lowered his wand, but didnât remove his arm from you.
âYouâre free to try again, if youâd like. Though I doubt being prepared this time will change the outcome.â You narrow your eyes at him.
âIâm gonna kick your ass.â
His haughty smirk morphed into an actual grin as he finally released his hold on you. âIâm looking forward to it.â
ââââââââââââââ
You, in fact, did not kick his ass. The tension between you continued to grow after every round, the air growing heavy with something unnamed, calling it quits after the fourth duel.
Following that, you would sneak into the Undercroft together while Sebastian was in class, enjoying the easy banter that came without the brunette dominating the conversation. Not that it had been very difficult to hide your increasingly frequent rendezvous. Sebastian had become more and more preoccupied with his search for a cure recently, talking about his latest discoveries every time you were all together. Both you and Ominis grew more concerned the deeper Sebastian delved into the Dark Arts, often discussing how to steer him away from the path he traveled on. Youâd decided to trust him to know when to stop, but you werenât convinced when he started pestering Ominis about the location of Salazar Slytherinâs secret Scriptorium. Ominis continuously refused to tell him any information, and was just getting more irritated by the day.
Ominis was ranting to you one day after combat training, yelling about how Sebastian had kept him up half the night prior with his whining. Youâd been contemplating how to end Sebastianâs obsession without potentially pushing him away, when a truly wild thought occurred to you. You tried to interrupt Ominisâs pacing and irritated grumbles.
âOminis.â He continued on as if he hadnât heard you, eyebrows scrunching further the more he worked himself up.
âOminis.â You called his name a bit louder. Still no response. You could sense a whole new wave of annoyance about to explode out of his mouth, and attempted to interrupt it before he really got going.
âOminis!â
âWhat?!â He whipped around to face you, a slightly unhinged look in his silver eyes.
âStop your incessant pacing for a moment and come over here.â He narrowed his eyes and grumbled, but did as he was asked, stopping a short distance away.
âWhat.â He was decidedly calmer than he had been, so you excused his shortness. You took a deep breath, preparing to share your possible solution, knowing heâd object immediately, but hoping to persuade him.
âI had a thought, but I donât think youâre going to like it.â He huffed and crossed his arms, putting all his weight on his left leg while raising one eyebrow.
âWell? Spit it out.â You rolled your eyes and took a deep breath, knowing he was acting this way out of worry.
âAlright, first of all, you can lose the attitude. Weâre on the same team here. No reason for you to get pissy with me.â He clicked his tongue and looked away, but didnât make any more comments as he waited for you to speak. Rolling your eyes again, you try to choose your next words carefully. âWhat if, and hear me out here, we take him to the Scriptorium.â
Ominis went to object, but you covered his mouth with your hand before he could get any words out. You tried to ignore the feel of his lips on your fingers and kept talking. âI wasnât finished. We take him to the Scriptorium, and if we find something, we hide it before he can get his hands on it. Heâll see itâs a dead end, and look elsewhere.â
You look up into Ominisâs hard eyes and slowly remove your hand from his mouth. His arms remain crossed as he scowls, remaining quiet for only a moment longer.
âCongratulations. That was officially the most ridiculous thing Iâve ever heard. Absolutely not. How could you think going INTO the Scriptorium is a viable solution? My Aunt Noctua disappeared after entering that place, and we all assume she died terribly in her search.â You could see the sadness creep into his expression at the mention of his beloved aunt.
As youâd grown closer the last few weeks, heâd started opening up to you about his family history, and how he adored his aunt for sharing his personal beliefs. Your brow furrowed in sympathy, completely understanding his aversion to anything to do with the Dark Arts. You place your hand gently on his elbow before speaking again.
âI know, but letting him think his search is futile would be better than the alternative. I have a bad feeling itâll only escalate if we donât intervene.â His face is turned to the floor, and his eyes still hold the same hardness from before, but he is clearly considering your words carefully. You squeeze his elbow gently, pushing on. âIt would also be nice if you could get some closure about your aunt. Maybe thereâs something she left behind?â You watched his shoulders sag as he exhaled loudly. Defeated. âWe stop as soon as things get too dangerous. Ok? I promise.â
He thinks for a moment more, but you could tell that youâd won. He heaves a large sigh before looking up at you, eyes searching your face as if he could actually see your expression. âOk.â You let out a breath you didnât know you were holding, and give his still folded arm a tight squeeze. â-but, we leave as soon as I say, alright? Not a second later.â You nod in agreement and say yes, hoping the two of you would be able to pull this heist off under Sebastianâs nose.
âââââââââââââââââ
The following night, you found yourself standing in a dark hallway deep in the Hogwarts dungeon. No other students ventured this far, and your only source of light were the sparsely scattered torches. Which only served to cast an eerie glow over the bricks.
âThe entrance is here, but thereâs some kind of trick to getting it to open. Something about threeâs.â
You look around and notice two large, unlit braziers flanking the arch way towards the Slytherin Common Room. Three pairs of bejeweled snake eyes seemingly following your every movement. Looking around, you spot a similar brazier standing alone down the opposite hall. Having become familiar with the little puzzles peppered around the castle, designed to bolster your field guide, you theorized those braziers probably needed to be lit.
Taking out your wand, you cast Confringo on the lone brazier, quickly casting it on the other two after. For a moment, nothing happens, and you second guess yourself. Just as you went to ask the boys for other ideas, faint hissing traveled past your ears, and only grew louder as a door revealed itself on the wall.
Sebastianâs face holds a poorly concealed grin, giddy at the new discovery. Ominis looks like he wants to call the whole thing off here, but instead approaches the door. âAlright, we found the entrance. Now, how to open the door.â He puts his hand on it, feeling for some sort of doorknob or locking mechanism, coming up empty handed. Sebastian squeezes in next to him to get a better look and the ornate designs.
âSay something in Parseltongue.â You cock your head at Sebastian quizzically.
âWhatâs Parseltongue?â Ominis sighs heavily, but doesnât look at you.
âA Parseltongue is someone who can speak to snakes. Itâs a rare ability, and almost all known Parseltongues are directly descended from Salazar Slytherin.â
Sebastian shuffles his feet excitedly and stops trying to hide his boyish grin. âAnd we just so happen to have one standing right here!â
Ominis looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. You knew he was feeling uneasy. Walking up beside him, you grab his hand, causing him to look in your direction uncertainly. You gave his hand a reassuring squeeze, ignoring Sebastianâs gaze darting between you two. Ominis squeezes back, and doesnât release you as he starts speaking. The unknown words caress your skin as they slither through the air.
The door responds, granting access to the pitch black rooms beyond. You give Ominis one last squeeze before letting go and heading into the dark, Sebastian following close behind. Ominis hesitated, but decided that whatever was beyond the door would be best faced by the three of you. As soon as everyone crossed the threshold, the entrance closed and locked, forcing you to continue forward through the maze.
âSo, what did you say to Ominis?â Sebastian came up next to you, speaking in a low tone just out of their companions earshot.
âWhat makes you think I said anything to him?â You kept your gaze focused on the stones in front of you, worried Sebastian would glean something from your expression. Sebastian huffed in amusement while moving some cobwebs out of his way.
âDonât even try. Iâve been hounding him for information for weeks. I tell you about the Scriptorium, and suddenly heâs on board? Clearly something happened with you two.â You blush a bit at the underlying implication in his words, thankful for the low light in this maze.
âYou just donât have the same way with words, Sebastian. I simply put the situation into perspective for him.â Without giving him a chance to respond, you push forward, scanning each surface for a hint of what was to come. Sebastian muttered a doubtful âRight.â under his breath, but dropped it for the moment.
You found several unlit torches on the walls, getting to work lighting as many as possible. There were unique puzzles acting as locks needed to move forward. You found scattered pages along the way, each revealing itself to be written by Noctua Gaunt. Handing each one to Ominis, he stores them safely in his robes to read later.
Solving the last puzzle, the three of you cross into the next room. You had a feeling this was the final hurdle before discovering the Scriptorium, but stop short after entering the room. A pile of bones lie on the ground near the opposite door, next to the word âCrucioâ scratched into the floor.
Mind reeling, you pivot, attempting to walk back to Ominis, only to find him directly behind you.
Heâd stopped so close that your forehead nearly bounced off his chest. His face unreadable as he stares in the direction of the body, the hand holding his wand shaking ever so slightly. You take his other hand in yours, silently confirming his terrible suspicion. He lets out a shaky breath he wasnât aware heâd been holding, body tense, only worsening when Sebastian read the word aloud. âCrucio?â
Ominis sucked in a sharp breath, his grip on your hand tightening painfully.
Keeping his grasp on you, he whirled back the way you came, dragging you along with him. âWeâre leaving.â
Just before youâd reached the doorway, it vanished, leaving you nowhere to go but forward. You yanked on Ominisâs hand, preventing him from hitting his head on the solid wall before you. His breaths became erratic, his hand shaking violently in yours.
âOminis itâs- the doorâs gone. We have to- we have to keep going.â You tried your best to remain calm and keep your voice from trembling. Ominis started shaking his head, tears beginning to gather in the corner of his eyes.
âNo. No, no, no this canât- we canât- we shouldnât- we shouldnât have come. I knew we shouldnât have done this. You- You promised weâd leave when I said. You-â Tears started to gather in your eyes from watching Ominisâs worst fear come true. You hated yourself for ever suggesting this in the first place, wishing you could take it all back. You hold his hand in both of yours, staring helplessly, trying to figure out how to calm his panic. Sebastian spoke from the other side of the room.
âWeâre not trapped, Ominis. We just need to cast Crucio and weâre in. Since youâre the only one whoâs cast it before, you should-â
âNO, Sebastian. Iâll never go near that spell again. I canât.â His silver eyes were wild as they shot in Sebastianâs direction, a shuddering breath escaping his lips.âYou need- You need to want to cause pain when you cast it. I have no such desire. I- I canât.â You squeezed his hand as hard as you could, trying desperately to squeeze the guilt out of him. Tears were openly running down his cheeks, his expression one of pure torture, as if he was reliving the day he cast the curse all over again.
âIt wasnât your fault, Ominis. Your family-â
âThat doesnât excuse anything. At the end of the day, I still cast it, and I will live the rest of my days haunted by the memory.â You looked to Sebastian for help, but only received a gesture to come over to him. Annoyed that he wasnât trying to help his distraught friend, you looked back at Ominis.
âOk. Itâs ok. You wonât have to cast it. Weâll figure out another way out of here. Stay right here.â You gave his hand one final squeeze before making your way to Sebastian. âWhat do we do?â He regarded you for a moment before flicking his eyes back towards Ominis.
âWell, I also technically know the Cruciatus Curse, but I havenât actually cast it before, so I canât entirely guarantee anyoneâs safety. I can either cast it on you, or teach you and have it cast on me.â
You already knew the answer. There wasn't a bone in your body that would allow you to cast such a horrid curse on your friends, growing nauseous at the thought. You looked at Ominis, once again facing the wall youâd come through, and steeled yourself.
âCast it on me.â Sebastian nodded and took a step back, waiting for you to give the signal.
âI wonât forget this.â
You took a steadying breath and nodded. Faster than you had anticipated, a bolt of red lightning was streaking from Sebastianâs wand. âCrucio!â
Your knees hit the ground as you were struck. Youâd tried to hold in your screams, for Ominis, but the pain was too great. Your wails echoed loudly in the tight space.
Through your tears, you could vaguely make out Ominis crouched over, covering his ears. A small part of you thought that you deserved this for opening his old wounds, but that thought was quickly replaced with another wave of blinding agony.
As the spell began to fade, you could hear the door into the Scriptorium melt against the floor, the path open. Your body screamed in protest, but you stood up as quickly as possible and focused on the task at hand.
âAre you alright?â Sebastian wore a look of concern, and it warmed your heart that he hadnât immediately run off into the other room. You nodded and walked inside, still clutching your ribs.
âFine. Letâs look around inside. Sebastian, start in this room, weâll search upstairs.â Without waiting to see if Ominis would follow, you dragged yourself by the handrail to the study on the second floor.
Casting Revelio, you spot a book lying on the desk emitting a dark and twisted aura. You pick it up and examine the cover, identifying it as Salazar Slytherinâs spell book. If Sebastian wanted anything in this room, it would be this book. You hear footsteps coming up the stairs, pulling you out of your thoughts, whirling around, you recognize Ominisâs blonde hair ascending the staircase.
As he reached the last step, you whispered his name, beckoning him closer. You started hurriedly filling him in when he got close enough. âOminis, this is Salazar Slytherinâs spell book. We canât let Sebastian find it. Help me look for a place to-â
âDoes it still hurt?â You sputtered in surprise.
âDoes what still hurt?â
You could see deep set worry in Ominisâs brows, his lips turned down in a sorrowful frown. âThe curse. Does it still hurt?â
You blinked slowly, not quite understanding his train of thought. âUm, well yes, but thatâs not important right now-â
âYes it is. Of course it is. How could that not be the most important thing right now?â His hand took your unoccupied one gently. His other came up to lightly stroke the side of your head, tucking his thumb gently behind your ear, barely touching you.
âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry you had to experience that torture.â You could feel his breath on your face from how close heâd gotten and how breathy his voice had become. âSo sorry.â
His face shone with regret, wishing heâd been able to spare you this pain. You squeezed his fingers, about to reassure him that you were alright, when you heard Sebastian call up to you.
âI havenât found anything useful down here! What about up there?â You were ripped from the intimate moment by the realization that you still had a job to do. You cursed under your breath and looked around, seeing a book of similar size on a top shelf behind Ominis. Casting Accio, you pull it towards you, placing it in the spot the spell book previously occupied. Thankfully, it filled the outline in the dust well enough to avoid suspicion. There was no time to stash the book in your hands, hearing Sebastian climbing the stairs, calling for you both. You look at Ominis wildly and shove the book into his chest.
âTuck the book into my waistband.â You let go of the book, forcing him to catch it before it fell to the ground. You quickly grabbed the back of his neck and yanked him down toward you. Pausing only briefly to apologize.
âPlease forgive me.â
âWhat-â You didnât give him time to ask what you meant, hoping that heâd figure it out. You pulled him the rest of the way down and crashed your lips together clumsily. He stood there frozen until he heard Sebastain call for you again, almost to the top of the stairs. Ominis wound his arms around your waist, underneath your cloak, tucking the spell book into your waistband like youâd asked. Making sure it would be secure until you could move it to a safer location.
You could hear Sebastian stop short at the top of the stairs and just stare. Both you and Ominis pretending you hadnât heard him, continuing to kiss. You started losing yourself in the blondeâs mouth, realizing how much you liked kissing him. His hands clutched your waist, pulling you as close to him as possible, seemingly becoming as lost as you. One hand came up to cradle your cheek, thumb stroking just under your eye. Your fingers found their way into his hair, lightly scratching his scalp and tugging slightly on the short strands. Ominis groaned into your mouth and deepened the kiss, licking at your bottom lip needily.
âOK, thatâs enough. What exactly is going on here?â You tear your mouths away from each other in genuine surprise, having both forgotten Sebastian had been standing there. He raised an eyebrow, regarding the both of you as you stayed intertwined.
âUh, well, the um, the pain from the, the curse hadnât fully subsided yet, and I needed aâŠdistraction.â You hoped your half baked lie would be enough to fool the brunette, but you werenât very confident.
Sebastian's eyes flickered back and forth between you two, definitely suspecting something was going on, also noting that you had yet to release each other. Ominisâs body curled protectively around you, shoulders hunched as if to shield you from Sebastianâs gaze. He closed his eyes and shook his head, deciding that he wasnât willing to deal with this right now.
âRight, well were you able to find anything of importance, or have you just been snogging this whole time?â You and Ominis finally realize you were still cradling each other, and jump apart. You looked down at the floor blushing, gesturing to the book on the desk. Ominis was looking anywhere but you, trying to hide his blush behind his hand. Sebastian eyed the both of you as he walked over to the book. You didnât know what book youâd summoned from the shelf, but you hoped that it was something less dangerous than the spell book. Sebastian flipped through the pages, seemingly satisfied.
âA book of rare potions. This could definitely prove useful.â With that he snapped the book shut and turned towards the exit. âLetâs get out of here. Weâve all had enough excitement for one day.â He started walking without waiting for either you or Ominis. Exiting, the back of your hand brushed Ominisâs, silently promising him that youâd take care of the book. He nodded slightly and you bid the boys goodnight, quickly heading for the Room of Requirement, thinking of places to stash the tome.
âââââââââââââââââ-
You didnât see much of the boys for a while afterwards. Trials set by the Keepers and your academic responsibility pulling you in too many different directions to have much free time to spend with your friends. Ominis wore a constant face of worry when you were around, repeatedly asking if you were alright. You did your best to reassure him that you were just busy, before apologizing and hurrying to your next task.
Ominis hadnât realized how much he enjoyed your company until he didnât have it anymore. He craved it, and was struck with how much he missed you. He didnât want to be selfish and ask you to carve out time to spend with him in your outrageous schedule, so he settled for keeping a close eye on you whenever you were near.
Thoughts of the Scriptorium floated through his mind constantly. Wanting to know why youâd thought to kiss him, and if youâd let him do it again. Sebastian had stuck his nose in the potions book youâd found, and had yet to come up for air. He wished there was a way to take some of the burden off his friends shoulders, but came up short every time.
After completing all of the Trials, you now had a fairly good grasp on the ancient power you wielded. Youâd listened to all the warnings from the Keepers on the responsibility of this power, and you swore to use it wisely. However, there was one thing you needed to accomplish, preferably without the Keepers ever finding out. Surely removing a curse was more acceptable than removing emotion, but you thought it best to keep it secret.
Thatâs how you found yourself in Feldcroft, standing outside Sebastianâs uncleâs house. You knocked on the door lightly, praying that Anne was home alone. She opened the door and greeted you cheerily, inviting you in. You glanced around and didnât see anyone else, which was exactly what you needed.
âHello!! Itâs been too long, thank you for the visit.â You smiled warmly and sat down at the table.
âItâs great to see you, Anne. Howâve you been? Have you seen Ominis or Sebastian recently?â She joined you sitting at the table, wincing a bit in discomfort before settling down.
âIâve been well. As well as I can be anyway. Fortunately both Ominis and Sebastian have paid me a few visits since we last spoke. I believe theyâre actually on their way over shortly.â You nod quickly, realizing that you didnât have much time.
âAlright, weâve gotta do this quickly. Anne, I can help you, but you canât tell a single soul what happens here. I need you to trust me and not ask questions, ok? Explaining would take much too long and put you in too much danger. Please, please just trust me.â You looked her in the eyes, willing her to say yes, so you could accomplish your goal before the boys arrived. She bit her lip and studied the table, nodding hesitantly, and then more resolutely.
âDo it. Uh, whatever âitâ is.â You breathed out a sigh of relief and took out your wand, placing it over her heart.
âTake a deep breath.â She did as she was told, and you began to pull the curse out of her while she exhaled. She had a slight look of discomfort but remained still until you were done. She slumped back into her chair as you placed the curse in a jar, to dispose of when you returned to the castle. You could see the color already returning to her face as you studied her, making sure you hadnât messed up in any way.
She had her head down quietly, and you were about to ask if she was alright, when you saw teardrops start falling into her lap. Panicking, you reach for her, afraid something was wrong. Suddenly her head shot up and she beamed at you, smiling so bright you thought you might end up blind.
âThe pain, itâs- itâs justâŠgone! Thank you. Merlinâs beard, thank you. I canât ever repay you for what youâve done.â You shushed her with a hug, glad to see the girl Sebastian spoke about come back to the surface.
âYou donât have to thank me. Just promise me, if anyone asks, tell them it was Sebastian. One of his potions, or something. Please, keep this between us.â
She nodded and wiped her eyes with her hand. You wanted to say more, but heard the tell tale signs of the boys arguing as they approached the house. You got up quickly and cast Disillusionment on yourself before whispering to her. âI was never here.â
She nodded again as the door opened, both boys walking in. You waited until they went to greet her before slipping out the front door, creeping away. You could hear Sebastianâs cries of joy as he held his sister close, asking her a thousand questions.
What you didnât notice, however, was Ominis watching you slink away down the path. Disillusionment never worked on him, his wand detecting a personâs mass. Heâd accidentally exposed many hidden persons, often getting them into trouble.
He listened to Anne and Sebastian talk, wondering why you hadnât stayed, but as Sebastian grilled Anne, he could hear the slight hesitance in her voice. He turned in their direction, watching Anne wring her hands under the table, something she did when she was lying.
She glanced over at him, noting his silence, in stark contrast with Sebastianâs excited chatter. Noticing how closely he studied her, she looked away quickly, laughing nervously at Sebastian, who was too wrapped up in his own excitement to notice.
Suddenly, it dawned on him what youâd done. He knew the rules youâd broken, the danger youâd put yourself in, and he wanted to weep. His emotions were everywhere, a part of him wanting to stay and celebrate, but a larger portion desperate to fly back to the castle in search of you. He struggled to get his breathing under control.
Anne could see the change in him, and shook her head, eyes wide, begging him not to say anything. Ominis took a few deep breaths, striding over to her quickly. He pushed Sebastian out of the way and enveloped Anne in his arms, squeezing her tight.
Sebastian wormed his way in between the two, joining the relieved embrace. The three of them sat quietly, and there wasnât a dry eye when theyâd finally pulled apart. Laughing through their tears, the boys regaled Anne with their latest escapades, excited for her eventual return to the school.
You sat in the back of Ominisâs mind as he celebrated with his friends, longing to share this moment with you, but understanding why he couldnât. He resolved to find you as soon as they returned to the castle, eternally grateful for the risk youâd taken.
____________________
Sebastian and Ominis only spent a couple hours with Anne, wandering back towards the castle in the early afternoon. The boys parted ways after entering Hogwarts, Sebastian walking leisurely toward their Common Room.
Ominis didnât even wait for Sebastian to turn the corner before taking off. He checked all of your usual haunts, failing to spot you anywhere. He started checking the classrooms to see if youâd maybe gone to speak to a professor, all coming up empty.
He made his way to the Astronomy Tower, having already checked the other classrooms, wondering where you could have possibly disappeared to. He passes a blank portion of wall, stopping at the light sound of metal on brick. Turning, he watches in awe as a door appears, beckoning him forward.
He opens the door slightly, cautiously sticking his wand in first, mapping the room beyond. His eyes widened as he yanked the door open, and taking a few hesitant steps in, he disappeared inside.
The room was enormous. He subconsciously wondered how his wand had never picked up such a huge space. He could hear the faint call of gulls and running water, sensing another large room down a nearby hall, but unable to glean any details.
There didnât seem to be anyone else there, until a house elf appeared next to him, startling the blind boy. âOh, Master Gaunt! What a surprise! What can Deek help you with?â Ominis looked from Deek, to the room, and back to Deek.
âWha- What is this place, umâŠDeek?â Deek smiles at him kindly.
âItâs the Room of Requirement, Master Gaunt! It sometimes appears to students in need. What were you looking for when it appeared? Maybe Deek can help you find it!â Ominis blinked. Heâd been thinking about you. His thoughts had been a jumbled mess, unsure what to even say when he finally found you. During his search, Ominis had considered keeping his knowledge to himself, but ultimately decided to come clean. He hadnât thought he could keep his emotions in check enough to come up with a convincing lie. His heart was pounding too hard with a driving need to see you, the feeling only increasing the longer you evaded him.
He relayed his intentions to Deek, who smiled widely back. âWell! Youâre certainly in the right place. Theyâre right down the hall, should Deek show you?â
Ominis shook his head and thanked the elf, walking quickly into the next room. There were plant pots and potion desks lining the walls, a pleasant scent hanging in the air. Ominis scanned the room, spotting you over by a truly massive Chinese chomping cabbage. He had no idea they could get that big, but there you were, petting it lovingly, unafraid.
He has no memory of walking towards you, not entirely in control of his body. You turn around, bumping directly into his chest, and let out a surprised gasp. âFuck! Who- Ominis! You- Merlin's beard, you scared me. How did you-â
Ominis drops his wand on the floor carelessly, hands coming up to cradle your face reverently.
âThank you.â His lips land on your forehead first, kissing the skin slowly. You make a small noise of surprise, but otherwise are unable to speak.
âThank you.â He kissed your left eye, voice barely above a whisper. Your hands unconsciously rest themselves on his forearms, gripping them slightly.
âThank you.â You feel the delicate press of his lips on your right eye.
âFor saving Anne.â He kissed the bridge of your nose tenderly, before skipping your lips and kissing your chin. âFor saving Sebastian.â
He looks at you with hooded eyes, stopping a hair's breadth away. Thumbs caressing your cheeks lovingly, pausing only for a moment. âFor saving me.â
You shake your head slightly. âI didnât-â
âYou did.â He runs his thumb along your bottom lip, brushing it ever so slightly. He hadnât realized until this moment, but you had indeed saved him. Heâd lost so much so quickly, and was on the path to losing whatever he had left. Anne was gone, and Sebastian was killing himself to get her back. Ominis had felt like he was drowning. His friends, who were really his family, were fading. There had been nothing he could do to stop it, butâŠyou did. Self sacrificing, stubborn, beautiful you. He knew he was done for. He wanted to fill his lungs with you, leaving no room for anything or anyone else.
The air hung heavily between you, the tension almost stifling. Ominis gently brushed your nose with his.
âCan I kiss you?â Ominis spoke the words into your mouth, his voice needy, waiting for your answer.
âIf you want to.â
He let out a shuddering breath, and inched impossibly closer. âDesperately.â
Pressing your lips together, he kissed you slowly, savoring each second. He groaned, pulling away briefly, only to come surging back with renewed vigor. Ominisâs hands slid down your sides, coming to wrap around your middle. Your arms came up around his shoulders, fingers carding through his hair, tugging at the strands. Ominis gasps, pulling your hips impossibly closer, grinding his lower body into you.
He tears his mouth away from you, but doesnât go far. Leaning his forehead against yours, you both take some time to catch your breath. He recovered faster, and started gently scattering soft kisses around your neck and jaw, continuing his ministrations while he spoke. âI donât- I canât articulate how grateful I am. Youâve done- Merlinâs beard, youâve done so much for me. How would I even begin to repay you?â
Youâre roused a bit from your dazed stupor at his words, tilting your head down slowly to look at him again, shaking your head. âOminis, thereâs nothing to repay. You owe me nothing.â
Ominis took a step back and sunk to the floor, kneeling in front of you. You had to grab onto the table behind you to avoid collapsing. You were rendered speechless at the sight of Ominis, on his knees before you. His hands rested on your outer thighs, thumbs stroking back and forth idly.
He looked up at you with unadulterated adoration, his sightless eyes searching for you longingly. âYou saved my family.â His fingers tighten ever so slightly on your thighs.
âI owe you everything.â Leaning forward, his lips placed a light kiss on your left thigh, scorching you through the fabric. He moved to kiss the other thigh just as tenderly, a shiver racing down your spine in anticipation. Hands creeping up to rest on your hips, he pressed a couple more kisses into your stomach, face nuzzling you here and there.
âIâd spend the rest of my days showing you how grateful I am,â his chin came to rest on your stomach âif youâd let me.â Eyes hooded, boring into yours, you move your fingers to brush his cheek ever so slightly. He leaned his head fully into your palm, an edge of desperation slipping into his voice. âPlease, let me.â He turned his face, kissing the palm of your hand, whispering into your skin like a prayer. âPlease.â
You can hardly breathe. Your heart, pounding faster than your first time flying on Highwing. The sight of this beautiful, refined, proud man begging on his knees was something straight out of a muggle romance novel. You cupped his other cheek with your hand, bending over and pressing a firm kiss into his soft lips. He groaned into your mouth, chasing you as you tried to pull away. Indulging him for a few more seconds, he whines as you actually pull away this time.
âOminis.â You pant his name into his mouth, he gasps and unconsciously rolls his hips forward, looking for friction.
âYes, darling.â He looked like a man starving. His hands had tucked themselves behind your knees, trembling from the effort of maintaining a sliver of his composure.
âOminis I-â
âIâm heading out to run a few errands for Professor Weasley, do you or Master Gaunt need Deek to get anything?â You and Ominis were startled out of your private little world, jumping apart for fear of Deek seeing you in such a compromising position.
Your brain fought through the foggy haze it'd settled in, and quickly answered Deek. âWeâre ok Deek. Just talking. Take your time! No rush to come back.â
You waited until you heard the elf apparate out of the room, looking around for somewhere to conceal you both, should Deek return too soon. You hear the familiar sound of the room changing itself to accommodate your needs.
Ominis yelped and covered his head, and you spotted a door forming on the far wall. The door swung open on its own, revealing a spacious bedroom on the other side.
âWhat the hell just happened?â You turned back to Ominis to see him peeking out from under his arms comically, in great contrast to his previous behavior. Ominis lowers his arms at the sound of your amused laughter, pouting a bit. You brush the back of his hand with yours and he quickly captures it in his.
âUh, well, it seems like the room thought we needed a moreâŠprivate place to finish our conversation.â You looked away blushing, but quickly turned back when you felt an impatient tug on your hand.
âI canât find it. Show me.â You could hear the barely contained neediness in Ominisâs voice. Realizing Ominis didnât have his wand, you start searching the ground around you.
âOminis, your wand-â
âDonât care. Weâll look later.â Getting impatient, he starts dragging you in a random direction.
Laughing once more, you redirect him towards the open door, spotting a fully furnished master bedroom, attached bathroom and all. Ominis waits for the sound of the door closing, before crowding you against it, trapping you with his body. His hands cradle your face once again, forcing you to look into his stunning silver eyes. He looks like it pains him to keep your lips apart, but he resists the temptation with furrowed brows, waiting. âWell?â
You want to laugh at his ridiculous question, but your voice comes out closer to a sob. âDo you even have to ask? I think you know very well that Iâm yours, that I have been for-â He didnât even let you finish before slamming his mouth down onto yours. Hands quickly trailing down to your thighs before hoisting you up to wrap your legs around his hips. You exchanged pleased sighs and hungry moans, your tongues dancing to the tune.
You fought to stay together as long as possible, becoming lightheaded as your lungs screamed for air. Ominis only tore himself away to suck in a deep breath, panting a desperate âI love youâ against your lips before diving back in. You lost track of how long you stayed entangled, exchanging I love youâs between sweet kisses and gentle touches, your intense fervor for one another slowly cooling to a low simmer.
At some point Ominis had carried you to the bed, where you currently lay facing each other, basking in the other's arms. Your fingers ran through his hair as he placed lazy kisses on your neck and collar bone, purring a quiet âI love youâ after each one. You sighed contentedly, thinking about how far youâd both come from that very first meeting.
You laughed quietly to yourself, prompting a curious hum from Ominis, who continued his slow ministrations.
âYou wanna know something?â Your voice was barely audible, afraid to break the peaceful atmosphere too soon.
âWhatâs that, my darling?â Ominis whispered the words into your shoulder, placing a light kiss on it right after.
You fought to keep the shit eating grin off your face, not wanting Ominis to get suspicious at the change in your tone. âThe day we first met, when I came over to help you with your assignment?â
âMhmm?â Another kiss behind your ear.
âSebastian actually caught me staring at you.â You huffed out an amused laugh. âHeâs very protective, tried picking a fight with me.â Ominis chuckled with you, running the tip of his nose along your jaw, quiet for a moment.
âWhat were you thinking about?â You smirked to yourself, knowing youâd caught him.
âWhen?â You put on an innocent act, pretending you didnât know what he was asking.
He huffed another amused laugh against your cheek. âWhen you were ogling me shamelessly across the library.â His hand was gliding gently down your arm, coming to rest on your hip.
âWellâŠâ You finally allowed the wide grin to spread itself across your face, making sure heâd be able to hear the taunting lilt to your voice. âI was thinking about how pretty youâd look with your dick in my mouth.â
Ominis barked out a surprised laugh, pulling you tighter against him and hiding his red face in the crook of your neck. You could feel the wide, happy grin he pressed into your skin, shoulders shaking with laughter. He brought his teeth to your ear, biting it gently in retaliation, causing you to squirm as he trapped you against his chest.
âYou naughty thing.â

The Magic that Binds us Cover Reveal
Dark Ominis Gaunt Love Story
Description:
The Magic that Binds us is a dark romance Love Story.
Cecelia Lockhart sealed away the Final Repository as a Seventh Year with ancient magic. However, sealing the repository came with a high price and one that left her relationship with Ominis in ruins.
Five years later, she spends all her time throwing herself into solving cases with the resident rake known as Sebastian Sallow. She's able to avoid her feelings for Ominis and what happened that night until two mysterious time travelers show up in London.
Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger are desperate to destroy the final repository which a goblin from the future finds. Largok was able to harness the power like Ranrock once did and has enslaved wizarding kind. Draco and Hermione are desperate to enter the repository and save their future. But they need Cecelia's help. And Gaunt, resident psychopath who has it out for Cecilia, refuses to help. He holds both the Keeper's wand and clues from Isidora's journal about how to harness the power that he would rather die than give to Cecelia.
This story will contain difficult subjects like mentions of pregnancy loss, grief, explicit content, and violence. But if you want to read a story where a hot psychopath likes to tie up the woman he's overly possessive for and describes her as a wren with broken wings, then this is for you.

I gonna confess something.
Writing about Sebastian as an realistic adult is more fun and interesting than his canon personality. I try not to unfocus too much from canon events, but in my heart, he does have a grey ending; getting what he wanted, but only after losing too many things.

Chapter 65: Irises and Yellow Roses
The Sun, the Moon, and All Our Stars
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/044710b4fd17bc0aad784a388d9397fd/1295502e03cb7fbe-d1/s540x810/ff04152d651781c10963966cbe9696580e53871e.jpg)
Summary and DetailsâŠ
Previous Chapter Recap/Context: Everyone has left the Three Broomsticks to give Sebastian and Ominis some privacy to catch up on their own. Ominis explained how he and Anne fell in love, what their marriage was like, and how her health greatly improved over the years. He then recounted the events preceding her sudden death. Anne had become determined to have children to continue the Sallow family line; she didn't wish for it to end in tragedy. Deliberately going against Ominis' wishes, she stopped taking her contraceptive potion on purpose, which resulted in pregnancy. Close to the twins' due date, Anne had a random bout of illness, but they considered it fairly normal and unconcerning, based on her symptoms, and she stubbornly refused to see a Healer. The next morning, Ominis woke up to find her dead beside him. In this chapter, Ominis continues the story and later, Sebastian returns home.
Pairing:Â 25-year-old, post-Azkaban Sebastian Sallow x 24-year-old Kate Mayflower (my OC), the assistant librarian at Hogwarts
Art Credit: the very talented @giselsann-opencommissions đ
Content warnings:Â In general, this is rated 18+, so minors should not read or interact with this story, but this chapter really has nothing I would consider triggering.
The full chapter is available below the cut; it can also be found on AO3 (link is posted below). Please leave some feedback if possible, especially if you like what you read! đ„°
Chapter 65: Irises and Yellow Roses
âOminisâŠâ Sebastian murmurs, noticing his watery eyes.
âThe coroner said that Anne had⊠experienced a stroke. That she had likely been suffering from something called toxemia,â the blonde man continues somberly. âIt supposedly happens to many pregnant women, especially to those pregnant with multiples, and is difficult to detect. We just⊠thought the symptoms were normal. We were so used to her having bouts of illness like that.â He pauses, wiping at his eyes. âWe didnât realize the severity.â
Sebastian works his jaw. He cannot fathom how something so⊠mundane could have finished her off, after all she had suffered through. Anneâs refusal to see a Healer was infuriating - and so like her, but he understands that they could never have imagined her suddenly dying overnight with those symptoms. Then, he considers Ominisâ experience.
Waking up to find the love of his life dead without warning.
Expecting to raise a family, only to end up completely alone.
All hopes and dreams dashed.
Sebastian doesnât even know what to say. He sits quietly, lost in his own pain, as he watches his old friend, his brother-in-law, cry.Â
âI should have insisted she go to St. Mungoâs,â Ominis mumbles dejectedly. âI want to- to take it all back. Reverse it all. It⊠it hurts so badly. Iâve lost⊠everything.â
Carefully choosing his words, Sebastian finally replies, âI understand. My situation⊠was never the same as yours⊠but I understand the feeling.â He reaches out to place a handkerchief in Ominisâ hand. âItâs indescribably⊠horrific. I wouldnât wish it on anyone. For many years, I wasnât even sure why I was alive⊠or that life was even worth living.âÂ
Ominis uses the cloth to dry his cheeks.Â
âI know this may sound impossible to you right now,â Sebastian continues, âbut⊠things can change. Your life isnât over. Try to find a reason to go on. The future is⊠open. It doesnât have to be miserable forever. Honor AnneâŠâ He trails off, fearful he might only upset Ominis further. How would one even possibly provide comfort in this situation? Sebastian stares at the floor. âOminis⊠I want you to know that you arenât alone. Weâre friends, and now, weâre family⊠I promise - I will help you in any way I can. Itâs what Anne would have wanted.â
When Sebastian returns to the cottage that night, heâs exhausted.
Kate kindly left a few candles burning for him, and he stumbles towards the bedroom to find her sitting up and reading in bed by candlelight. Her eyes take him in as he wanders in wordlessly. He undresses slowly, and she waits patiently for him to join her.Â
Sebastian lets out a sigh as he settles, his head in Kateâs lap. She runs her fingers through his hair, silent for a long while.
Kissing the top of his head sweetly, her lips lingering, she whispers, âWould you like to talk about it?â
He shakes his head, no.Â
âThatâs fine,â she soothingly murmurs. âLetâs go to sleep, love.â
They readjust, and for once, Kate spoons Sebastian. She can tell that he is attempting to hold back tears, but his emotions quickly consume him, and she can feel his stomach contracting as he sobs.Â
It breaks her heart, and she wishes she could take away whatever pain heâs experiencing. All she can do is hold him tight. This distress keeps her awake until she can hear him breathing deeply, finally asleep.
âI love you,â she whispers, even though he wonât hear.
Kate wakes early the next morning to the sound of Sebastianâs light snoring.Â
Wishing for him to get much more rest, Kate carefully slips away towards her side of the bed, placing a pillow where her body had been curled against him. She slowly lifts herself up, trying to keep the bed from creaking too loudly. She slips on her deep green, silken robe and gingerly pads across the room to escape into the hallway.
She decides to start breakfast, trying to determine what type of food might be best after last nightâs excitement. Kate wonders if Sebastian may have a hangover; she determines that it would be best for him to have a hearty breakfast to soak up the alcohol and replenish his hunger.Â
When she is just about finished with cooking, she hears footsteps in the hallway. The sound disappears as he closes the bathroom door. Quickly, she plates everything and sets the table.Â
Sebastian finally wanders into the kitchen a few minutes later, yawning, donning only pyjama trousers. His eyes grow large when he sees that breakfast is completely ready.
âGood morning, darling,â Kate cheerily says in a sing-song voice.
âGood morning, sweetheart,â he echoes in a somewhat groggy tone.
âSit,â she offers, motioning towards the chair he usually takes. âIâve made breakfast.â
Sebastian gladly plops down, surveying the offerings.
âIâve made oatmeal with cinnamon, pecans, apples, and dried cranberries,â she explains. âBreakfast tea is ready. Iâve fried up some tomatoes and sausages. Thereâs also a bowl of fresh strawberries and blueberries - Iâve just washed them.â She smiles. âBut if there is anything else you desire, just say the word. I mean to please you.â
âGods, no. I already feel spoiled,â he answers gratefully. He lifts her hand, kissing it. âYouâre⊠youâre bloody perfect, Kate. This is incredibly considerate. I love you so much.â
She giggles in response. âAnd I love you.â
As they tuck into the food, Kate is surprised to hear that Sebastian is not hungover.Â
He tells Kate everything about his private visit with Ominis. She listens avidly, asking several questions to which Sebastian does not yet know all of the answers.Â
When he reaches the part in which he and Ominis said goodbye, he hesitantly says, âI need to tell you something. I hope you arenât angry with me that Iâve not given you much notice, butâŠâ He looks into her blue eyes. âI invited Ominis over for dinner tonight.â
Kate slowly nods, and Sebastian immediately assumes that she is upset. He quickly adds, âYou donât have to cook. I can order a meal, cook something up myself, or just change the plans and go out to dinner in Hogsmeade. And Iâll do everything to prepare the cottage for the evening. Sorry⊠Itâs just⊠When we went our separate ways, I didnât feel like we had fully caught up.â
âItâs alright,â Kate replies. âI donât mind hosting. I donât mind cooking, either. But yes, you will need to help quite a lot. Perhaps you can help out a bit in the kitchen⊠and Iâll certainly need you to do some work around the house.â She pauses. âNext time, I would appreciate more notice, though.â
âOf course.â He kisses her cheek. âThank you.âÂ
Kateâs mind begins to run through the ingredients she has on hand and what might be impressive enough to make for a dinner guest. Knowing that Ominis is blind actually makes her a bit more nervous. Sheâs read before that when someone loses their eyesight, all other senses are heightened. This means her cooking will need to be especially flavorful. She will need to pull out all the stops.Â
Ultimately, Ominis will be her brother-in-law, and she aspires more than anything to win his friendship.
Nothing is more important to Kate than family, and Ominis is the only other remaining member of the Sallows. This dinner could hopefully solidify a renewed relationship between Sebastian and Ominis and encourage them to get together more frequently.Â
Sebastian needs that.
âWell, weâll need to get to work right away,â Kate says decisively, standing up. âCome on, letâs get dressed.â
Sebastian pouts as he nuzzles his face between Kateâs soft breasts, barely covered by her thin robe. âDo we have to? Do you have to?â
âSebastian.â She gives him a chastising look. âYouâre the one that sprung this on meâŠâ
âOh, fine,â he mutters with a smirk, allowing himself to be helped up from the table.
The houseplants have all been watered, and windows are open to let in the fresh summer air. Sebastian has tidied up the living room and bathroom, and Kate has busied herself with baking a pie, using preserved apple pie filling. She places it near the window to cool.
âSebastian!â she calls outside, âWill you be finished soon? I really need those vegetables.â
âComing,â he shouts back.
Moments later, the front door swings open, and Sebastian enters, carrying a basket filled with freshly harvested vegetables.Â
âI could be wrong, but I didnât think the peas looked ready yet,â he informs her. âBut I have everything else you requested - the potatoes, carrots, and asparagus.âÂ
âAlright.â She takes the basket from him, inspecting the gardenâs yield.Â
Then, Sebastian reveals a bouquet of flowers he had been hiding behind his back. Kate gasps as she accepts the yellow roses and purple irises, inhaling their scent.Â
âLovely,â Kate hums. âJust lovely.â
âI almost cut some of the peonies,â Sebastian mentions, âbut these were also ready⊠and their symbolism⊠itâs meaningful for tonight.â
Kate nods. âHmm⊠the irises⊠theyâreâŠâ Her nose scrunches. âIâm afraid Iâve forgotten. Let me take a look in my book.â
He stops her. âThey symbolize hope, faith, and trust in friendship. And the yellow roses - theyâre optimism and joy in friendship.âÂ
Kate gives him a lopsided smile. âMy clever Seb.âÂ
She turns around, strolling into the kitchen to find a vase. He follows her like a puppy.
âThe pie smells fantastic,â Sebastian murmurs as she fills a vase with water. âI wish I could steal a piece right now.â
Kate smiles, carefully arranging the flowers in the vase. âYouâll just have to wait, dear.â
He pulls her hips forward, places his hands on her arms, and leans in with a mischievous grin. âYou know patience is not my strong suit.â He kisses her cheek and eyes her up and down. Sheâs wearing a darker yellow dress, a rather simple one, under a cream-colored, frilly smock. Her hair is half-up, half-down; delicate white flowers are woven into a braid secured around the back of her head. âYou look very pretty.â
She goes pink, secretly delighted by the compliment. âI know Ominis canât see, but I still want to at least look⊠decent.â
They kiss, and the scent of her floral perfume envelops him in its sweetness.Â
âYou smell like a dream,â Sebastian whispers in her ear. âFlowers and honey⊠vanilla and cinnamon⊠so sweet.âÂ
He picks her up, placing her on the counter and going in for more kisses. She gives in, and their lips move together languidly. After a minute, the kisses begin to feel more insistent, and Kate finally pulls back, giggling. She pushes him away playfully, sliding off to stand on her own two feet.Â
âAlright, Romeo. We have work to do,â she teases him, a smile tugging at her lips.
Kate puts Sebastian to work, asking him to wash the freshly harvested vegetables as she greases and flours a bread pan. She takes a cloth off the top of a bowl, revealing fragrant dough that had been left to rise, which she puts in the pan and then the oven.Â
Eventually, the two stand side by side to cut the carrots and potatoes. Laughter fills the kitchen as they take turns feeding each other small scraps.Â

Sebastian stares at Kate for a long time, his eyes filled with deep affection. âKateâŠâÂ
âWhat is it?â
âI⊠Iâm so lucky,â he finishes. âSometimes I really cannot believe Iâm here with youâŠâ
Kate smiles back at him. âYou are. Youâre home, my love.âÂ

The stone door of the Undercroft groaned softly as Sebastian pushed it open, stepping carefully inside. He exhaled softly, his shoulders relaxing for the first time all day. He had snuck out after curfew, hoping to release some pent-up frustration with a few dueling spells.
He was halfway down the stairs when he froze. Voicesâtwo of themâfloated up from below.
Sebastian frowned, his grip tightening on the banister. He recognized them instantly. You and Ominis.
What were you doing here so late? He edged closer, careful to stay out of sight.
âI just donât see the point,â your voice echoed softly. âItâs not like anythingâs ever going to happen.â
Sebastian froze mid-step, his grip tightening on the banister. His brow furrowed. What wasnât going to happen?
âIt wonât if you keep dragging your feet,â Ominis replied, his tone dry as ever.
âItâs not that simple,â you shot back warily.
Sebastian tilted his head, curiosity sparking to life alongside a strange, uneasy feeling in his chest. You sounded frustratedâalmost pained. What could possibly have you so worked up?
âIt is that simple. Youâve been in love with him for years,â Ominis said, his tone cutting. âMerlin, Iâve lost track of how many times weâve had this conversation. Either do something about it, or stop talking about it.â
Sebastianâs heart stopped. In love? Youâd never mentioned anyone. Not once.
âThere's nothing I can do, Ominis,â you said, exasperated. âHe doesnât see me like that.â
Sebastianâs stomach twisted painfully. Who was this mysterious he? Why hadnât you told him about this before? You usually told him everything.
âAnd how would you know?â Ominis challenged.
âBecause I know him,â you replied firmly. âWeâre best friends!â
Sebastianâs chest tightened, a painful mix of jealousy and confusion swirling inside him. Best friends? You were his best friend. Who could possibly come before him in your life?
âRight,â Ominis said sarcastically. âBecause youâre so unremarkable.â
âOminis,â you groaned, âIâm serious.â
âSo am I,â he shot back. âHalf the school is in love with you, and youâre acting like youâre some invisible wallflower.â
Sebastianâs jaw tightened. Ominis wasnât wrong. People were drawn to youâhow could they not be? But youâd never seemed to notice, much less care. And now you were sitting here, pouring your heart out about someone who clearly wasnât him.
You sighed, the sound heavy with frustration and tinged with a hint of defeat. âIt doesnât matter what the rest of the school thinks when heâs completely out of my league, Ominis. With his stupidly handsome face and that ridiculous smile that makes it impossible to think straightâŠâ You trailed off, shaking your head. âMerlin, heâs just⊠heâs everything. Funny, clever, brave, loyalâhe could have anyone he wanted.â
For a moment, it felt like the ground had been ripped out from under Sebastianâs feet. How could you possibly think that? How could you believe, even for a second, that you werenât good enough for whoever this bloke was? And the worst partâthe part that made his chest acheâwas that he couldnât step in. He couldnât tell you how wrong you were because he wasnât supposed to be listening this in the first place.
âAnd?â Ominis prompted.
âAnd what?â you asked, your voice quieter now.
âYouâre always going on about how wonderful he is, which, Iâll admit, I struggle to agree with,â Ominis said with a dry chuckle. âBut you never actually tell me how he makes you feel. Isnât that the important part? Does it matter how... how handsome and funny he is if he doesn't make you feel something special?â
You hesitated, your voice soft and uncertain when you finally spoke. âHe⊠I donât know. He makes me feel safe, Ominis. Like no matter whatâs going on, as long as heâs there, Iâll be okay. And he makes me feel seen. Really seen. Like I donât have to be the âhero of Hogwartsâ or âthe girl with ancient magic.â I donât have to be anything except⊠me. He knows me in a way nobody else does. And when Iâm with him, itâs likeâfor onceâI donât have to prove anything.â
Sebastianâs chest tightened again, but this time it wasnât just jealousyâit was something deeper, more painful. Because thatâs how he felt about you. You were his safe place, the one person who saw him as more than the brash, reckless troublemaker everyone else thought he was.
And now⊠now he was realizing that someone else held that place for you.
Ominis huffed a laugh, breaking the silence that followed your confession. âYou know, itâs almost tragic.â
You glanced at him, confused. âWhatâs tragic?â
âThat itâs him youâve fallen for,â Ominis said, his voice laced with dry amusement. âOf all the people in Hogwartsâall the people who would gladly worship the ground you walk onâyouâve managed to lose your head over the most chaotic, reckless, insufferable person I know.â
Your jaw dropped, and a laugh bubbled out of you despite your embarrassment. âOminis!â
âIâm serious,â he said, smirking. âYou could have anyone. Anyone. And yet youâve decided to pine after someone who probably doesnât even realize you feel this way because heâs too busy rushing headlong into whatever absurd plan pops into his head.â
You groaned again, shaking your head. âYou donât have to rub it in.â
âWell, I do,â he replied, grinning. âBecause clearly, heâs too thick to notice, and youâre too stubborn to tell him. Iâm the one stuck in the middle of this ridiculous mess, forced to play mediator while you both dance around each other like idiots.â
Sebastian felt like his chest was going to collapse. The way Ominis spoke so casually about this guyâteasing, almost affectionateâwas like a knife twisting deeper into his gut. Whoever you were in love with wasnât just close to you. They were close to Ominis, too.
Who the hell is it?
Sebastian's mind raced through the possibilities, his thoughts a chaotic mess of jealousy and dread. It had to be someone you spent a lot of time with, someone you trusted enough to feel safe around, someone who was close enough to Ominis that he could make jokes about their recklessness.
And then it clicked.
Garreth Weasley.
Sebastianâs stomach dropped. Of course it was Garreth. It made perfect sense.
Garreth was charming, clever, and funny. He had that easygoing, confident smile that always seemed to draw people in. He was loyal, tooâalways ready to back up his friends, even if it meant landing himself in trouble. And he had that playful, carefree energy that made everyone want to be around him.
Sebastian felt sick.
Of course she loves Garreth. Why wouldnât she?
He thought back to all the times heâd seen the two of you togetherâlaughing in the Great Hall, chatting during potions class, exchanging those little looks that heâd tried to tell himself didnât mean anything.
But they did mean something, didnât they?
And then there was Ominis. Ominis liked Garreth well enough, didnât he? He put up with Garrethâs antics, even joined in on the occasional joke. If you were in love with Garreth, it explained why Ominis was teasing you so mercilessly.
It all fit together too perfectly.
Sebastian gritted his teeth. He wanted to hate Garrethâwanted to hate him for being everything Sebastian wasnât, for being the kind of person you could fall for so easily.
But he couldnât hate Garreth. Not really. It wasnât Garrethâs fault that he was so damn likable. It wasnât Garrethâs fault that Sebastian had been too much of a coward to tell you how he felt.
He pressed his back against the cold stone wall, closing his eyes and letting out a slow, shaky breath.
Iâve lost her, he thought bitterly. I never even had her, and Iâve already lost her.
âItâs not like I have a choice, Ominis,â you continued on, your voice quieter now, tinged with frustration and something far more raw. âIf I could stop loving him, donât you think I would have by now? Believe me, Iâve tried,â you continued, your voice breaking slightly. âIâve tried everything. Iâve told myself itâs just a stupid crush, that it doesnât matter, but it does. And no matter what I do, I canât⊠I canât make it go away.â
âThen why donât you tell him?â Ominis asked, his tone softer now, almost coaxing. âWhat are you so afraid of?â
You groaned, the sound laden with frustration. âBecause it doesnât matter! He doesnât like me back, Ominis. Iâd destroy our friendship for nothing!â
Sebastianâs heart clenched painfully, the bitter sting of your self-doubt twisting something deep inside him. How could you think so little of yourself? How could you not see what he saw when he looked at you?
Ominis let out an exasperated sigh. âI donât think he deserves you,â he muttered. âMerlin knows heâs well aware he doesnât deserve you. But you canât decide his feelings for him. Thatâs not how it works.â
You scoffed. âYour point?â
âIâm just saying,â Ominis replied, his tone exasperated, âthat youâre doing both of you a disservice. Itâs⊠itâs getting to the point where something has to give. Either you tell him how you feel, orââ
âOr what?â you interrupted, glaring at him.
âOr I will,â Ominis said firmly, his expression unyielding.
You gasped. âYou wouldnât.â
âI would,â Ominis said, his smirk returning. âIâm tired of watching you both suffer in silence. Merlin knows Sebastianâs too dense to work it out on his own. Maybe hearing it outright will knock some sense into him.â
Sebastianâs heart stopped.
Itâs me.
The thought hit Sebastian like a stunning spell, freezing him in place as the pieces of the conversation finally fell into place. Every word, every hint, every exasperated sigh from Ominisâit all pointed to the same answer, one that heâd been too blind, too self-critical, to see.
You were talking about him.
You were in love with him.
His breath hitched, and his grip on the banister tightened as his heart pounded so loudly he was certain you and Ominis would hear it. The jealousy, the doubt, the sharp ache in his chestâall of it melted away, replaced by a dizzying mix of disbelief, relief, and something far brighter: hope. Because you loved him.
âI mean it,â Ominis was saying now, his tone both firm and teasing. âIf you wonât tell him, I will. Frankly, Iâm tired of sitting through these endless heart-to-hearts when the solution is so obvious.â
You groaned, your frustration evident. âOminis, I swearââ
âDo it, or Iâll make it the most public confession Hogwarts has ever seen,â Ominis threatened, though the smirk on his face made it clear he was only half-serious.
Sebastian couldnât stay silent any longer. His feet moved before his mind caught up, carrying him down the remaining steps until he was standing in the open, his gaze fixed on you.
âOminis wonât have to say a word,â he said, his voice steady despite the storm of emotions churning inside him.
You and Ominis both turned toward him, your expression contorting into shock while Ominis grinned.
âSebastian,â you breathed, your eyes wide.
Ominis crossed his arms, looking entirely too smug. âAh, there you are."
Sebastian ignored him, his focus entirely on you. âIs it true?â he asked, his voice softer now, almost hesitant. âEverything you just said⊠is it true?â
Your mouth opened, but no words came out at first. Your gaze flickered to Ominis, as if silently cursing him, before returning to Sebastian. âHow much did you hear?â
âEnough,â he admitted, taking a step closer.
You flushed, your hands twisting nervously at your sides. âSebastian, Iââ
âJust tell me,â he interrupted gently, his eyes searching yours. âPlease.â
You hesitated for a moment, your breath hitching, before finally nodding. âYes."
For a moment, Sebastian couldnât speak. He just stood there, staring at you, his heart so full he thought it might burst. And then, without thinking, he reached for your hands, his grip firm but gentle.
âYouâre in love with me?â
Your cheeks burned, but you held his gaze, your voice trembling as you said, âI am."
âI love you, too,â he said simply, the words spilling from his lips like theyâd been waiting years to be spoken. âIâve loved you for as long as I can remember."
Tears welled in your eyes as you stared at him, your expression a mix of disbelief and overwhelming relief. âYou⊠you do?â
He smiled, his thumb brushing lightly over the back of your hand. âI do. More than anything.â
Ominis cleared his throat loudly, breaking the moment. âWell, now that thatâs settled, perhaps you two can finally stop making my life so unbearably dramatic.â
Sebastian shot him a look, but there was no real anger behind it. For once, he was too happy, too relieved to care about Ominisâ meddling.
For a moment, neither of you moved, the weight of everything left unsaid finally lifted. And then, with a soft, almost hesitant smile, Sebastian tilted his head and closed the remaining distance, his lips meeting yours in a kiss that was as gentle as it was certain.
When the kiss broke, Sebastian rested his forehead against yours, his smile soft but unshakably certain. âYouâre stuck with me now,â he murmured, his voice low and full of promise. And as you laughed, the sound light and filled with a joy you hadnât felt in years, you knew there was nowhere else youâd rather be.
