Exactly 100 years ago, President Warren Gamaliel Harding escaped the sweltering summer weather and increasingly dark political climate of Washington, D.C. to embark upon a lengthy cross-country trip through parts of the American West still relatively unaccustomed to frequent visits by the nation’s Chief Executive. Billed as a “Voyage of Understanding”, Harding’s trip was seen as a prelude to his potential campaign for re-election the following year, and an opportunity to put some literal and figurative distance between the President and the rumors of rampant corruption swirling around some of Harding’s friends and closest aides from Ohio, as well as several Cabinet members — rumors eventually proven to be true, resulting in indictments, convictions, prison sentences, and even suicides. As President Harding prepared for his Western tour, he could feel the heat as the scandals plaguing his Administration began to reach a boiling point. Speaking privately to the famous journalist and editor William Allen White, Harding said of the Presidency, “My God, this is a hell of a job! I have no trouble with my enemies…But my damn friends, they’re the ones that keep me walking the floor nights.”
Harding’s planned 15,000-mile Voyage of Understanding began on June 20, 1923. Traveling aboard the private Pullman railroad car Superb, the 57-year-old President left Washington, D.C. accompanied by First Lady Florence Harding, Speaker of the House of Representatives Frederick H. Gillett, new Interior Secretary Hubert Work, and a large retinue of aides, friends and their families, doctors, Secret Service agents, and members of the press. Work had become Secretary of the Interior a few months earlier when the previous Secretary, Albert B. Fall, became the “fall guy” for the Teapot Dome scandal. For his role in the scandal, Fall was later convicted of accepting bribes — the first former Cabinet member in American history to serve time in prison for crimes committed while in office. At later points along the journey, Harding’s party was also joined by Secretary of Agriculture Henry C. Wallace (father of future Vice President Henry A. Wallace) and Secretary of Commerce (and future President) Herbert Hoover.
The last week of June 1923 was spent traveling through the Mountain West — Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. The beginning of July saw the Presidential party in the Northwest and celebrating Independence Day in Portland, Oregon before boarding the USS Henderson in Tacoma, Washington on July 5, 1923 to sail to Alaska. One of the expected highlights of the Voyage of Understanding was the northernmost leg of the trip, as Harding became the first incumbent President of the United States to visit Alaska and Canada. The Territory of Alaska had been purchased for the United States by Secretary of State William Seward in 1867 when Warren G. Harding was two years old, and at the time of Harding’s visit, Alaska was still 35 years from being admitted to the Union as the 49th state. But the President spent nearly the entire month of July traveling through the state, mixing public appearances with private recreation and sightseeing. On July 15, 1923, Harding hammered a golden spike in Nenana, Alaska to officially complete the Alaska Railroad. And ten days later, the President crossed into Canada, fishing on the Campbell River in British Columbia on July 25th and then making an official visit the following day in Vancouver, where he was greeted by one of the largest crowds of his voyage — estimated at over 40,000 people — and where he also squeezed in a round of golf at the exclusive Shaughnessy Golf Club.
The President returned to American soil on July 27th, arriving in Seattle and making several speeches in a busy six-hour period — first to Camp Fire Girls at Volunteer Park, then to nearly 30,000 Boy Scouts at Woodland Park, and finishing the day addressing over 30,000 people at what is now Husky Stadium at the University of Washington where he predicted statehood for Alaska, where he had spent most of the month. After making a brief appearance that evening at the Seattle Press Club, Harding boarded his train that night to travel to Portland, Oregon.
But something was not right. The President seemed to be exhausted, perhaps from the grueling trip through geography much wilder than Harding’s native Ohio or swampy Washington, D.C. Despite his exciting journey through Alaska and the energetic welcome provided by the Canadian people, Harding was clearly wiped out by the time he reached British Columbia. The President did head to the country club while in Vancouver, but he was so tired that after six holes of golf his foursome skipped directly to the eighteenth hole, seemingly completing the round without tipping off the press that Harding couldn’t play the entire course.
From the White House, nine days before embarking upon his Voyage of Understanding, Harding wrote a quick note to Solicitor General James M. Beck who had wished the President a safe journey on his upcoming trip. Thanking Beck, Harding wrote, “I shall try to remember not to overdo (it) in crossing the continent.” And, on June 14, 1923, six days before leaving, President Harding wrote a short letter to a young girl from Hartford, Connecticut named Vivian Little, who had recently sent the President a four-leaf clover as a good luck charm. “Thank you so much for the four-leaf clover which you were so good as to press and send to me,” the President wrote. “I hope it will bring me good luck and that it will bring you still more of the same.”
However, any luck that President Warren G. Harding still had seemed to be running out. Ill and exhausted after leaving Vancouver, Harding tried to rest aboard the USS Henderson as it sailed to Seattle in the early morning hours of July 27. At some point around 3 AM, Harding and the other passengers aboard the Henderson were jolted awake as the ship crashed into the USS Zeilin, an American destroyer accompanying the Presidential party while they traveled through the foggy Puget Sound. This was not the first mishap of the Voyage of Understanding. While traveling through Colorado early in the trip, three people from the President’s party had been killed in a car accident. And now, after a few weeks in Alaska where Harding was able to at least temporarily forget about his Administration’s many troubles, the President was not only sick and tired but two of his Navy’s ships had just smashed into each other almost as soon as he had returned to the continental United States. While the USS Zeilin was badly damaged in the collision, the USS Henderson was not and there were apparently no major injuries on either vessel. But when the President’s valet, Major Arthur Brooks, came to Harding’s stateroom aboard the Henderson to inform him that the captain was calling for all hands on deck, he found the depressed President lying on his bed with his face buried in his hands. “I hope the boat sinks,” President Harding quietly muttered.
It was just hours later that Harding made his whirlwind tour through Seattle, putting on a brave face at his public appearances, but clearly not feeling well. While he was never considered a brilliant orator like Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Harrison, or his immediate predecessor, Woodrow Wilson, Harding was a strong speaker and excellent communicator who had a unique ability to connect with audiences, but he was obviously — and unusually — halting and confused while speaking in Seattle on July 27th. As he boarded his train at Seattle’s King Street Station that night, Harding was examined by his doctor and by Interior Secretary Hubert Work, who had once been a physician, and they decided to cancel the next several days of planned activities. Instead of stopping in Portland and then visiting Yosemite National Park, the Presidential party was ordered to proceed directly to San Francisco where Harding could rest before giving a speech on the radio planned for July 31st which was expected to be heard by over 5 million people.
Despite the four-leaf clover that had been sent to him by Vivian Little before his Voyage of Understanding, Warren Gamaliel Harding’s luck seemed to be running out. And, as his train sped through Oregon en route to San Francisco’s Palace Hotel on July 28, 1923, President Harding was also running out of time.

Happy birthday to you!!! I’m on my way with a cake rn 🧁🧁 because I know you love them can you write a first date with Jamie Oleksiak? Thanks love 🩷💜🩷
Yay for cake! thanks for this one Kayla!
Going on a date with Big Rig? yes please sign me up.
everything about this man screams traditional romantic to me. Like he wants to sweep you off your feet for sure.
I can see him pulling out all the steps to wow you for this first date. He wants to ensure a second one, you know? Jamie isn't the type of guy to mess around when he likes someone - he puts in 100% effort and plays no games.
I'm talking flowers at your door, compliments on your outfit (because he can also tell you've made effort and he appreciates someone matching his energy), organising a car service to drive the two of you so he can give you all of his attention, and reserving a private table at a restaurant with incredible views of downtown seattle.
He's a romantic.
The best thing is that it's all so genuine - he isn't just going through the motions, he really means all of the effort he's putting in, so you are absolutely swept off your feet, just as he'd hoped.
the best part about the car service he'd arranged? the two of you can kiss all the way home.
(and maybe a little kissing goodnight after he walks you up to your door)

Sometimes, on your fourth day on the road, you get so sick of the way the one pair of shorts you packed fit that when after a full day of driving, you go to the cheapest clothing store in Fort Nelson, buy a pair of patterened rayon jeans on clearance, and hack them off at the knees with the dull kitchen scissors that live in the van. Although these makeshift shorts do not necessarily fit you better than the ones you packed, they at least fit you differently.
Four days on the road. Temporally, this puts me halfway through the eight-day itinerary. At just over 1000 miles from Seattle (as the Google maps, not counting some side trips and the occasional back-tracking for a good view), and a little under 1000 from Tok, Fort Nelson puts me about halfway through the drive geographically, as well.
I started the morning in Dawson Creek, at Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. (I met a nice Swiss couple at the mile marker who were, like me, getting their photo op in. They'd driven from Halifax and were planning to go all the way up the Dalton Highway! Because I am the kind of nerd that I am, as soon as I got back in the car, I turned on "The Last of Barret's Privateers" and belted about being a broken man on a Halifax pier in their honor.) Immediately outside Dawson Creek there was a lot of truck traffic, and I spent quite a while tailgating and being tailgated as steep grades and a lack of passing lanes kept us all stuck together.
By the time I reached my first rest stop in Wonowon, though, the driving had changed noticeably. In the first three days I spent a decent amount of time keeping an eye on my mirrors for people in smaller cars that would want to pass me. Once I was truly on the highway, the number of passing vehicles dwindled significantly. And the landscape spread out soon enough into rolling evergreen forests, bisected by the road. It's August, so fireweed dusts the cleared firebreaks on either side of the highway in a Barbie pink that looks unreal and is almost impossible to capture on my phone's camera. The deciduous trees flash the pale undersides of their leaves at the northbound traveler, revealing how windy it is.
This is what I think of when I think of the Highway: these long, straight stretches with big sky and no one around. The kind of wildlife I associate with the north is starting to appear, too. I saw a black bear galumph across the road around 4PM, and a little further on I saw a doe nursing a faun beside the road. Both obviously moved too fast for me to get pictures. The blackbirds scavenging on the highway are also clearly ravens, now: they're too fucking big to be crows. The other day I saw a black bird so big that I couldn't not spot it, despite the shade of the trees. Ravens are big.
The halfway point means I've been out here long enough to get a couple routines down. It also means I've been out here long enough to decide on problems -- e.g. the aforementioned shorts, the fit of which I am sick, or the buurned-on bits of fries I reheated in a pan without any oil the other nnight. But overall, as I told a local while I filled up today, the van treats me well.
Halfway also means I start thinking about the end of the trip. To be honest, today I thought about stopping earlier than Fort Nelson, partly because I was much more tired from yesterday's drive than expected, and partly because I don't want to rush. The lack of services between Dawson Creek and Fort Nelson ended up deciding me and I pushed on, but the possibility of extending the time on the road, letting the bubble of travel get just a little bigger, is tempting.
On the other hand, I miss my dog. And paying less than $150 per gas tank refill. Getting to Alaska, and then home, will be nice. When I get there.
A few less highfaluting thoughts (I blame Nabokov for the style): tonight I not only got to use the levelers to even out one side of the van for the night, I'm swatting skeeters like mad. The bugs are most definitely getting worse as I go north. The windshield is a war zone, and when I stopped earlier I found the van SURROUNDED by wasps and flies. Are they feasting on their fallen brethren? will they please leave me alone???

The US does not have the cohesiveness to have a general strike. It really doesn't; those can't happen when so much of the working world is isolated from other workers. (The last "general strike" in the US was in 1919 - in Seattle alone. 65,000 workers struck in support of shipyard workers.)
What we can get, is several unions striking at once, and more unions supporting them - refusing to cross picket lines, while otherwise doing their jobs.
Writers' and Actors' strikes can effectively shut down the entertainment industries - there'll be a gap before that's obvious (because studios can still broadcast/stream projects that are complete) but it doesn't take long for them to push into panic mode if they can't do any new production.
A distribution strike, like UPS, can shut down a whole lot of mainstream businesses. The corporate shills will try to talk about the tiny fragment of a percentage of their work that relates to medical emergencies; they will NOT be talking about how much money they're saving using UPS instead of private couriers. They won't be talking about how, if these workers are providing such a necessary and vital service, why aren't they being paid more?
The idea of the United Auto Workers striking fills me with glee, because omg we do. not. need. as many cars as we have; we don't need replacement cars every three or five years; barring weird accidents, almost nobody needs a new car THIS year... but wow a few weeks of shutdown would send car manufacturers into screaming fits because they're conditioned to think that every quarter is supposed to have increased sales based on the previous one. They really don't want to think about "the US has 332 million people and 287 million cars, so, more than 1 car per household, and that's... probably enough? For a while, anyway."
They don't want to think, "Maybe we could reduce production, increase production time, add more safety features, add more safety features for the workers, because HEY THERE ARE ENOUGH CARS; we should be doing maintenance, not growth--"
Nope. So I hope they strike.
What they're asking for:
reinstatement of a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that was eliminated during the Great Recession
stronger job security;
the end of a grow-in (tiered) pay system that has members earning different wages and benefits
general salary increases - executives got bonuses over the last few years, record profits recorded, etc.
can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike

Jimi Hendrix's family
When Jimi was born, his father, Al, was a 23-year-old private in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Rucker, Ala. Jimi's mother, Lucille Jeter Hendrix, was only 17 and still a Seattle schoolgirl. They married on March 31, 1942, at the King County Courthouse in a quick ceremony, and only lived together as man and wife for three days before Al was shipped out to the service.
Al liked boxing and dancing.
Seattle, then headed to California to get the toddler.
The family in Berkeley attempted to talk Al into leaving Buster with them, and an adoption would have been easy to arrange. Al was conflicted, yet overwhelmed with paternal love. Al decided to take the boy.
In Seattle, Al and Jimi moved in with Aunt Delores to the Yesler Terrace housing project, the first racially integrated public housing in the United States. Lucille showed up soon after. For the first time the three Hendrixes were in the same room. By all accounts, the next several months were the smoothest the family would ever experience. Living with Lucille's sister, their expenses were minimal, so for once money was not an issue. Al was receiving small payments from the Army, and he and Lucille were able to go out on the town while Delores stayed with Jimi. Eventually, Dolores became fed up with Al and Lucille's drinking and kicked them out.
Al then found work at a slaughterhouse, and they moved to a transient hotel in the Jackson Street area. Their modest room had only a single bed, which he, Lucille and Buster shared. They had a one-burner hot plate to prepare meals, and the room's only other furniture was a desk chair. They lived in this hotel room for months, until Al took a job as a merchant marine and was shipped to Japan. When he returned, he found that Lucille had been evicted. Al later said she had been kicked out after being caught with another man in the room; Delores disputed Al's version of events, but whatever happened it did not stop Al from taking Lucille back again immediately, and thus a pattern emerged: fights and separations were an integral part of their marriage.
Just 11 months after Leon was born, Lucille gave birth to another boy, whom Al named Joseph Allan Hendrix. Al was listed as the father on the birth certificate, though in his later autobiography Al denied paternity. Where Jimi and Leon were both tall and lanky, Joe was short and stocky, but looked enough like Al to be his twin.
Joe's birth was not a joyous occasion, as the baby had several birth defects. Jimi had turned 6 the winter Joe was born, and the family now had three young children to feed. Al and Lucille often fought about which one of them caused Joe's medical problems: Lucille blamed Al for pushing her when she was pregnant; Al blamed Joe for drinking.
In official divorce proceedings, Al was awarded custody of Jimi, Leon and Joe. This was really a paper formality: As they had been during most of Al and Lucille's marriage, the Hendrix boys were raised by Grandma Clarice Jeter, Al's mother in Vancouver, Aunt Delores, friend Dorothy Harding and others in the neighborhood. And despite being divorced, Al and Lucille still were together sometimes, as their passion play continued. Joe, however, was scheduled to become a ward of the state, the only way to get his medical expenses totally covered. Lucille and Al had to give up parental rights and leave him at Children's Hospital.
Watching for Welfare
Lucille quickly went off again, and Al was left raising Leon and Jimi by himself. "The neighbors started to take over watching us," Leon recalled, "because they knew what was going to happen - that welfare was going to take us away." The welfare department workers drove green cars, and Leon and Jimi learned to watch for those vehicles and beat a retreat if they saw one. Leon and Jimi would usually end up at neighbors around dinnertime. "Jimi and I used to be so hungry, we'd go to the grocery store and steal," Leon said. "Jimi would be smart: He'd open a loaf of bread, pull out two piece, wrap it up, and put it back. Then he'd sneak into the meat department, and steal a package of ham to make a sandwich out of it."
In 1953, the family's fortunes improved when Al got a job with the city engineering department as a laborer. He purchased a small two-bedroom home at 2603 S. Washington St. Jimi was now attending Leschi, the most integrated elementary school in the city. Here, he met up with the boys who would become his closest childhood friends: Terry Johnson, Pernell Alexander and Jimmy Williams. Jimi occasionally joined Terry at Grace Methodist Church, and it was there that he had his first exposure to gospel music.
For entertainment the boys enjoyed swimming in Lake Washington or going to cheap matinees at the Atlas Theater, where Jimi fell in love with the "Flash Gordon" serial and especially with the movie "Prince Valiant." The villain in "Prince Valiant" was called "the Black Knight," and Jimi and Leon would charge each other with brooms in make-believe jousting matches. That same broom was also fashioned into an imaginary guitar. He would play along to the radio, strumming the broom as if it were a guitar.
By 1954, acting on repeated complaints from neighbors, a social worker eventually cornered Al Hendrix. He was given two choices: His sons could be sent to a foster home or be put up for adoption. Al argued that Jimi, almost a teenager, needed less caring for, and thus should stay with him. Leon, Al's favorite by every account, would go to foster care.
Leon was placed in a foster home six blocks away with Arthur and Urville Wheeler. The Wheelers had six children of their own, but housed as many as 10 additional kids. They were church people. "Jimi was at our house more than he was at his dad's," recalled Doug Wheeler, one of the Wheeler sons. "A lot of times Jimi would spend the night, so he could have breakfast before going to school. Otherwise, he might not have anything to eat."
That fall, at Al's urging, Jimi turned out for junior football. His coach was Booth Gardner, who decades later would become Washington's governor. "He was no athlete," Gardner recalled. "He wasn't good enough to start; to tell the truth, he really wasn't good enough to play." Gardner felt sorry for Jimi and saw that the poverty in the family home was severe. One day Gardner stopped by and found Jimi sitting alone in the dark. "The power had been turned off," Gardner recalled.
When he wasn't playing football, Jimi roamed the neighborhood at all hours with little supervision. He soon knew every musician around, simply by listening by the sounds of their rehearsals. He'd hear music coming from a house, and as a curious boy, he'd simply knock on the door.
In 1956, during the first half of a year at Washington Junior High, Jimi earned one B, seven C's and one D. In the second half of the year, he had three C's, four D's and two F's. Jimi would have started eighth grade were it not for further problems at home. The bank repossessed their house, and Jimi and Al moved to a boarding house run by a Mrs. McKay. As a result, Jimi had to switch schools.
Jimi wouldn't finish high school. And after getting caught for driving two stolen cars would be faced with either two years in jail or the army. He chose the army. And he brought a guitar from his father with him.

I get the comparison, the USA has had very little investment in their public infrastructure since the 60's and has been geared towards cars ever since Henry Ford had any sort of influence but I think London v Seattle is a little unfair of a match up kinda making these maps pointless.
For one, the London underground was given the green light for construction (1854) three years after the first European families settled in Seattle (1851) with the first underground tunnel opening in London in 1863. For hopefully obvious reasons, historical & economic, London has had the means & time to establish a network of subways whereas Seattle simply has not.
What Seattle has are buses! Lots of buses though probobly not enough. A tram runs here and there and there's a tiny monorail left over from the 1962 worlds fair but it's mostly buses. I think part of the reason there's so many buses is due to the drumlin hills that run through the city but I think the reality is that it's cheaper to add a bus line to service some people than it is to build a rail to service a lot of people.
As someone who grew up in Seattle there's a reason we barely have any underground transit, most of the city is built on 100 meters of silt bars & 1/3rd of downtown is built on man-made silt bars when they filled in the Duwamish delta. As someone who's father-in-law works for the seattle department of transportation I've had first hand accounts of how difficult it is to bore a hole under the city and keep both the new tunnel and the ground above secure. As an indigenous person who's family was embedded in the community I had first hand accounts of how many Seattle construction sites uncovered native American remains that have sat there from the at least 4000 years of habitation & while many private companies will pretend they didn't see anything & keep building the city actually has to obey its own laws & pause construction whenever they find remains so they may be assessed and removed by the correct people.
There have been talks of expanding the light rail network my entire life and these have always been issues people tried to work around until about 15 years ago when the elevated platforms started to be planned. Now the light rail that used to just be downtown & south to the airport stretches all the way to Northgate & is being lengthened faster and faster. It's still pretty much a single north/south line but Seattle is very much a north/south city.
Thank you for listening to the sound of my brains leaking out of my ear, learn your city it might not help in any substantial way but it makes life nicer to live.
