Author's Note: This is based off of the song Kate by Sean Kennedy. Literally so good.
He remembered all of them, cheap fucks- the price of them actually free, usually. The first couple times, he swore he was in love. The naivety of youth and the fresh break of virginity created a rose-tint that kicked his heart in the ass every night for months. But after a few more, he realized that he actually just liked the idea of feeling wanted. No strings attached. No discrepancies of the boy-friendly woes like hand-holding or learning her name to worry about.
All women in passing, faces in a somber crowd. Maybe they wanted the same thing that he did- to feel something for just a second. He figured a lot of them just wanted to feel pretty again.
He felt bad at first, taking advantage of them in skeezy bar bathrooms and in the back of his van, knowing that he was capable of much more than that, but the feelings numbed alongside the tenderness of being touched that way. Love didn’t just lose its meaning. Love was the worst curse he could think of. Love was something he had never known. Love kicked his heart in the ass one too many times.
He decided that love was never a bitch he would get to know, that was until Kate walked in.
It was in passing first. It was still early enough that the streets and sidewalks of Hawkins, Indiana remained relatively unburdened. The latch-key hour was for his morning stroll, post-black-coffee-camel hanging from his two fingers, ash teetering dangerously off the end. You came brushing past, inherently unremarkable. You didn’t meet his eye when you walked past, though, he couldn’t quite tell with the sunglasses that covered the top half of your face.
You were West Hollywood. You walked like Sunset Strip. You smelled all of the romantic parts of a skeezy, intoxicated one night stand after a Whiskey A Go-Go show, the ambergris bourbon and cardamom seeping through his nose like a cancer. You were the entire crowd, and one person all at once. He could feel the stage light burning red hot against him as the bass crescendo rolled through your body. In his brain, the show was your legs thrown over his shoulders.
He shook his head, rattling the thought out of his ears like a set of dice on the upholstery of a Vegas craps table. Falling in love- or lust- with a stranger in passing wasn’t his style, yet here he was, die firmly sat on seven.
Preemptively, Eddie named you Kate.
Kates were nice girls. Kates wore frilly ankle socks and mary janes and their boyfriend’s letter jackets. Kates did their homework, went to college, made it home by curfew. Kates loved their parents and taught Sunday school. Kates steered clear of boys like Eddie.
But Eddie loved ruining girls like Kate.
+
As quick as Kate flooded his mind, Kate was just as quick to leave. He didn’t pine. He didn’t hurt. He didn’t feel anything.
Until the ambergris bourbon of the Sunset Strip turned into black coffee and cigarettes and unfiltered morning light, tucked in between the glue-laden binding of trashiest Cosmo edition you could get your hands on.
His eyes started at your ankles, watching the way you swung the crossed mass back and forth in a mindless rhythm, allowing the sole of your shoe to scrape against the concrete. He watched their way your body folded into itself comfortably- in a way that he speculated only women knew how to do. He saw how your eyelashes nearly kissed the apples of your cheeks as you looked down to read, chin against your palm that was propped against your knee.
You looked so peaceful, and Eddie loved disturbing the peace.
He gripped his coffee in his hands, relinquishing the burn of the hot liquid barely filtered by the paper cup to ground him out. His feet, like cement weights, dragged towards you.
“Is this seat taken?” He asked, and you jumped slightly, staring at him with wide eyes.
“Oh, sorry, didn’t mean to scare you” He apologized quickly, already starting to turn on his heel. The symphony of stupid already rattling around in the pink matter of his brain.
“Oh! No! I just didn’t notice you walking up.. Go ahead, sit!” You said, overly-friendly and not wanting to cause him any emotional distress.
He pulled the chair in front of the outdoor table back, the cast iron scraping disgustingly on the concrete and wobbling slightly as he sat. He took another drag off of his cigarette, before eyeing your magazine.
“Whatcha’ readin’?” He asked, nonchalantly, and you giggled, flipping the magazine over to the front.
Cindy Crawford splayed across the front of the magazine with a bright orange cover, hair elegantly windblown and delivering the most sensual bedroom eyes that the Melvald’s had ever witnessed.
Top Male Stars Tell What Turns Them On. Would You Believe a “Toothy Grin”? Was the first headline Eddie caught. He read it slowly, then panned his eyes back up to your beaming face, a similar toothy grin pulling at your corners of your mouth and pushing the flesh up beneath your eyes.
Eddie didn’t read Cosmo, yet, he resonated that yes, absolutely, a toothy grin could, in-fact, turn him on.
“Awful, isn’t it?” You asked him, giggle still lingering in your words.
“Yeah.. it is.” He said, offering a nervous laugh back. He didn’t expect you to say it out loud, he thought that maybe you had actually been indulging in whatever garbage it had to offer.
“But,” He started again, “If it's so bad, then why are you reading it?” He asked you.
“I think it’s funny.” You said back to him, like it was obvious, “They’re literally just pages full of garbage about what men think women want.”
“Does anyone even take those things seriously?” He asked, arching a brow at the tabloid in suspicion.
“I’m sure they do.” You said back to him, confidently.
“So what do women want?” He asked, bravery coming to him in a sudden spurt. It blindsided you.
“Other than a toothy grin?” You asked, half-sarcastically.
“Is there anything else a woman could possibly want?” He questioned back.
“Oh sure. Lots of things.”
“Like what?”
“A cigarette, for starters.”
He released a breathy laugh, flipping the box open, lighting it, and passing it over to you.
While you were talking about double-standards and patriarchies, he was taking in the features of your face. He didn’t mean to focus so intently on your lips as they closed around the filter, or the unknowing sensuality of the way you rolled the cigarette between your index and middle fingers. You released a soft french inhale from your lips, and he so desperately wished that it was him that replaced the smoke billowing from your mouth.
To be completely honest, Eddie didn’t care what women wanted unless it was you that wanted him.
“So, what about you?”
The question drew him back up for air, pulling the cotton from his ears in a blindsided panic.
“What?” He asked, quickly shaking his previous thoughts from his head.
“What do men want?” You asked, not taking notice of his momentary panic. Instead, you rested your chin in your palm.
“Well I can’t answer for all men, but this man wants a pretty girl watching his show on Tuesday.” He said back to you, smoothly.
He didn’t catch your name.
+
The Hideout was dingy, to say the least, but it has its own distinct, homely charm. The people in it were friendly enough, aside from the odd drunken skeeze- but you figured every rose has its thorn.
By the time you strolled in, the band had already been playing. You sat yourself down in the very back up against the bar, away from the tables hosting other patrons. The bartender was a nicer older woman, the kind that called you baby and healed whatever emotional trauma your parents might have given you. She poured your water-spotted lowball glass with Patron Silver, the edge rimmed with salt and garnished with a lime.
You are a republic of voices tonight, watching as the mysterious man you seemed to almost kind-of like bounced around on stage. He flipped his hair back, sweat cascading off of the ends like glitter and the stage light casting a halo around his head.
You met his eye, and relished in the comfort of your dark corner, avoiding the stage lights from catching your fact at all costs. It was as if the harsh, angling light will turn you to flesh and bone. Mortality will pierce you through the retina.
And much to your demise, the pink lighting does catch your face. You don’t vaporize. Eddie sees your face, and the way the light illuminates the space behind your corneas, casting a monochromatic glow over the top portion of your body. He throws a wink you’re way and, even though there’s realistically no one in here who would be on the receiving end of that wink aside from you, you question if it was.
The songs are loud. The music is abrasive. You don’t know the words, but you wish you did. You liked the way it rang in your ears- you liked the way Eddie rang in your ears.
The last song is different from the rest of them. By now, most of the other people had filed out and the bartender idly wiped down the countertops. The song was sultry, his voice took on a hum much different than the loud, boisterous tone he took on previously.
“Kate… Likes to hear her name out loud.
Kate… Likes it when I use my mouth….”
You watched him intently, deft fingers plucking over acoustic guitar strings. His legs were braced against the stool, jeans stretching over his spread thighs. He watched you this time, your sweet face pressed into your soft palm. You had kind eyes, and he tried not to think about watching them roll back in fucked-out bliss as he played.
By the time the song was over, there was a tension between you that could be scooped with a spoon. He quickly pulled the strap of his guitar off from around his neck and made his way towards where you sat. You decided quickly that you needed liquid courage, licking the side of your glass and dumping the remnants of tequila into your mouth.
“You came?” He asked you, outstretching his long arms to encase you in a bone-crushing hug.
“What… were you expecting me to run in the other direction?” You asked with a breathy laugh, in part because he squeezed it out of you.
“Honestly a little bit.” He said back, giving you the same laugh you offered, though his was more guttural.
You sat at the bar for a bit, giving each other a good back and forth rhythm. You spoke about nothing in particular, and everything all at once. FInally, you had built up enough courage- so greatly donated to your person by Patron Silver- to ask,
“So… Whose Kate?”
He froze for a second, like he didn’t know how to respond.
“Oh… just a girl I met a while ago.”
“She sounds interesting.”
“She is interesting.”
+
You don’t know how you ended up at Forest Hills Trailer Park.
Actually, you knew exactly how you ended up back at Forest Hills Trailer Park.
What you couldn’t recall, is how Eddie had managed to sweet talk his way under your shirt, out of your jeans, and in between your legs (even though you actually kind of knew that, too.)
Despite his abrasive nature and equally abrasive exterior, he was soft with your body. His hands were gentle, and his kisses were feather-light. He held you like glass. He pressed hot kisses down your throat, your collarbones and sternum. He lapped gently at your pert nipples, pebbling them softly beneath his tongue. His fingertips ghosted over your hips and over the rounds of your thighs. But his mouth was foul.
“You taste like fucking candy.” He groaned, though muffled by your thighs as he licked a crude, wet stripe in between your folds.
He rolled his tongue over your clit and you cried the prettiest sound he had ever heard.
He realized that his previous sentiments in naming you Kate were incorrect- or maybe that he was wrong about Kates everywhere.
Kate was pretty, and she left her perfect clothes in a perfect pile on his bedroom floor. Kate didn’t have frilly socks, instead her bare ankles hung around his shoulders as he kissed her thighs. Kate drank chilled Patron Silver and smoked stolen camels- but only in the morning and only with coffee. Kate loved when boys like Eddie sang about her on stage. Kate liked having her pussy eaten.
Kate also felt more human than the other girls he took against the wall.
“Baby, you’re so wet for me.” He sighed against your thigh, momentarily relieving you of the intense pressure building against your clit as he slid his middle and ring finger past your entrance.
You let out a sigh, hands reaching down to grasp the pillowy dough of your own thighs as he curled his fingers within you. They brushed that beautiful spongy spot over and over again. His spare hands curled over the fingers that gripped your thighs, sweetly.
Your orgasm came as a flood, intense pleasure beginning at your core and radiating through your body. He continued to work his fingers through your apex and pressed hot honey kisses to your shaking thighs.
“You ready for my cock, sweetheart?” He asked, sitting up on his knees and rubbing your thighs between his heavy hands, tenderly.
“”M ready.” Was all you could muster in your still-floaty state. He chuckled softly, pulling his belt off.
You watched the way his alabaster skin stretched over his bones like leather. As he pulled his jeans and boxers off, clumsily, you also watched his pretty cock. Pink at the tip with significant length and girth, a pearlescent bead of precum gathering at the tip. Eddie really was very pretty.
He worked two fingers into you slowly, feeling out your sensitivity. When he deemed you ready, he slid the tip in, slowly. You moaned softly at the dull ache and stretch.
“There we go, baby, s’good for me. Taking it so well.” He said to you, softly, heavy grand gripping your hip. You squeezed his own with your knees.
As he began to rock, there was an ex cathedra riff coming down from the Vatican: Repent. Your body is the temple of the Lord and you have defiled it. It is, after all, Sunday morning, and as long as you have any brain cells left there will be a resonant patriarchal basso echoing down the marble vaults of your churchgoing childhood to remind you that this is the Lord's Day.
“You feel so good babe, so- fuck- tight on my cock.” His words combined with the heavy thrust of his body entwined with yours reeled you back into reality. His grip on your hips tightened, less soft than before. You knew he felt it, too.
As he came, the oiled ellipses of his hips and shoulders tightened, warm ropes of cum coating your slick walls. Your second orgasm following is only a few seconds behind.
He collapsed on to you, dramatically, resting his head in between the valley of your breasts. His breaths were heavy still, and his skin shone with a sheen of sweat that made him glow. His cheeks were tinted pink and his eyelashes kissed with his smile.
When he came down, he lifted his head to meet your eyes.
“My name’s not Kate, by the way.”

December 2017 - *PlayLi$t of the Month*
With only a few days remaining in 2017, I have spent the last few days tearing through as much new music as possible for this month’s playlist. The last few days alone proved to be stacked with new releases, which certainly made an impact on the final version of my list. As I continue to work on THE Rap Pundit’s list of the best rap songs of the year, please enjoy this super-sized edition of my PlayLi$t of the Month for December....
1. “Rivi” - Benny
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/2-rivi-prod-by-daringer?in=gxfr/sets/benny-x-dj-green-lantern-butcher-on-steroids
(While his fellow Buffalo brethren and Griselda solider blessed the world with G.O.A.T just about 48 hours ago, Benny The Butcher had one of the hottest projects out with Butcher On Steroids. I’m glad that folks are starting to appreciate Benny, because he really is one of the finest writers of raw street tales I can recall since Beanie Sigel. “Rivi” is one of many standouts off the mixtape, but it’s that second verse that helped it land the #1 spot this month: “they tell us to stay in school, but nah, that don’t pay electric / it’s funny how we say we trap, just to make an exit.” Damn, Benny’s...got...BARS.)
2. “G.O.A.T.” - Conway
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/01-g-o-a-t-produced-by-1?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Finally...the G.O.A.T. has arrived. Call it a mixtape, call it an album, call it whatever you want, but no matter how you look at it, Conway’s new project is as grimy as advertised. I’m not sure if it’s a stronger project than Conway’s previous two 2017 projects - Reject On Steroids & More Steroids - but that’s a testament to how prolific Con has been this year. The titular track makes for an attention grabbing intro, with Daringer providing Conway The Machine with sparse drums that serve to heighten anticipation for the ominous music to follow. And Con doesn’t disappoint. If you have never heard a song from anyone associated with Griselda Records, consider this cut the perfect intro to the resurgence of gritty hip-hop that has been coming out of upstate New York over the last few years.)
3. “Facts” - Royalz feat. Roc Marciano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETKBFEbGzBI
(I don’t know where this track came from, or anything about Royalz’ production, but this thing is a straight thumper. Roc really sounds like he’s in the pocket on this one...notice who amazing he sounds over samples that lean on a reggae vibe? I’m still bumping Rosebudd’s Revenge on a regular basis, as you should.)
4. “Th3rd F” - Conway feat. Raekwon
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/03-th3rd-f-featuring-raekwon?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Possibly the most Wu-esque non-Wu track I’ve ever heard. So damn raw and soulful Conway had to get someone from the Wu-Tang Clan to jump on board, and boy does Rae jump in. After you start to wonder, “oh no, is Rae just speaking on the outro to this one?”, he comes through with a verse that stands with any of his classics. Of all the grimy cuts on Grimiest Of All Time, this one is a contender for the grimiest.)
5. “Mandatory” - Conway feat. Royce Da 5′9
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/08-mandatory-featuring-royce?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(The whole G.O.A.T. project bangs, but when The Machine and Royce join forces, what follows is a bloodbath of bars. “Mandatory” is no different.)
6. “I Pray” - Fabolous & Jadakiss feat. Swizz Beatz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKnwDRbu4Cw
(Not gonna lie...I was pretty disappointed by this Freddy Vs. Jason/Friday On Elm Street project. After a lengthy delay, it finally dropped, but long after Halloween, and long after Fab’s resurgence about two years ago. Both F-A-B-O and Jada have some strong moments on the tape, but most of the tracks lack the teeth of the project’s intro, or this moody gem. Probably the finest hook work on the whole tape, too - thanks Swizz.)
7. “The Delegation” - DaVillins feat. Roc Marciano, Rim, Rock Monsta, Foul Monday & Sean Price
https://soundcloud.com/da-villins/the-delegation
(This is a CRAZY collaboration that just dropped earlier today. Fans may recognize this from a snippet of Roc’s opening verse that was posted on IG last month. I originally thought it was a tease for Roc’s upcoming sequel to Rosebudd’s Revenge, but that remains to be seen. Wherever this track ends up, it’s tough as nails and belongs on this list.)
8. “Stir Fry” - Migos
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/migos-stir-fry/
(Pharrell blessed the Migos with this one. The unstoppable trio of Offset, Quavo and Takeoff sound as energized as ever, twisting some contagious flows over this bouncy and melodic instrumental that harkens back to some of The Neptunes’ finest work.)
9. “Been Down” - Nipsey Hustle feat. Swizz Beatz
http://uproxx.com/realtalk/nipsey-hussle-swizz-beats-been-down-surprise-single/
(It’s really starting to sound like Nipsey is preparing us for something special in early 2018, doesn’t it? Musically, I think Nipsey has grown a lot since he arrived on the seen. He and Swizz cruise along on this one, riding the horns of an instrumental that serves both east and west coast sensibilities. I’m really look forward to his Victory Lap album this Feb.)
10. “Slept To Death” - Statik Selektah feat. Curren$y & Cousin Stizz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w11nuulV5GI
(Always glad to hear a new compilation from Statik Selektah. Curren$y and Cousin Stizz sound so slick over this instrumental, it’s hard to believe these guys aren’t all part of the same collective. Makes sense, because whatever Spitta or Stizz lack in lyrical complexity they make up for in making consistently good music.)
11. “Trump” - Conway
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/02-trump-produced-by?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Fans knew that Alchemist would cook up something dark for Conway’s G.O.A.T. It seems that a lot of their work that was previously allocated to the album might now appear on Conway, Westside Gunn & Alc’s Hall & Nash 2 tape in the future. If any more of their collaborations sound like this one, then 2018 is going to be another year that belongs to Griselda..)
12. “You The Type” - Your Old Droog
https://soundcloud.com/adultswimsingles/your-old-droog
(I typically like to keep comedy and rap music separate...but Your Old Droog has some legit hilarious lines on this one. One of the few MC’s that can pen a funny line that’s also dope as hell, this is the Droog I have been missing. He’s still one of the best lyricists of the modern generation, go back and listen to his projects if you’re somehow still sleeping on Droog.)
13. “Only Difference” - Taylor Bennett & Bianca Shaw
https://www.fakeshoredrive.com/2017/12/taylor-bennett-bianca-shaw-connect-for-only-difference.html/
(It’s great to hear new bars from Chance The Rapper’s younger brother, because I know Taylor can spit! I’m less familiar with Bianca Shaw, but both of the young MC’s go in, and I am loving the vibe on this one.)
14. “Modern Slavery” - Travis Scott & Quavo
http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2017/12/quavo-travis-scott-huncho-jack-jack-huncho-album-stream/
(I didn’t expect much from this collaboration. I knew there would likely be a few catchy joints off of Trav & Quavo’s Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho project...but my gut told me this would be a lazy union of two of auto-tune’s finest auto-tuners, and little more than a collection of throwaways. Well...sometimes my gut is just *straight-up* stupid. The chemistry between these guys is immediately apparent. They flow their asses off, hooks are well constructed, and the production could not be more polished for a surprise tape like this. And kicking off the project with a dope soul sample? I did not expect that at all. Shame on me for doubting the knack for musicality that both of these artists possess.)
15. “Satriale’s - Benny feat. El Camino and Conway
https://shadyrecords.com/2017/11/27/listen-now-benny-x-dj-green-lantern-butcher-on-steroids/
(Three of Griselda’s mic assassins going in on one record, why not name it after the infamous Sopranos hangout? Take your pick of who takes this one, but I would have to say that not many are writing tight verses like The Butcher right now - and that includes the might Machine.)
16. “Two 16′s” - Z Money & ChaseTheMoney feat. Valee
https://soundcloud.com/user-421658681/two-16s-feat-valee
(This one dropped a few months back but it has been garnering considerable attention as of late. Low key, I have been a Z Money fan for a while, and I dig Valee too...but Valee’s flow on this one...the dude leaves the planet on “Two 16′s”. Take a listen and see for yourself - and remember the name Valee, because rumor has it he is now signed to G.O.O.D Music, which means even bigger things to follow....)
17. “Theme Music” - Fabolous & Jadakiss feat. Swizz Beatz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gdWI4C3Am4
(Wow, busy month for Swizz, eh? I remember when I first heard this sample used on U-God’s “Bizarre”, and I’m glad it was put to good use again. While Fabolous is no Styles P., he sounds pretty good going back and forth with Jadakiss on this soulful standout off Friday On Elm Street.)
18. “Space Cadet” - Kollision (Quality Control album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbBLJCYyo2E
(I don’t use the term “wavy” often...or ever...but if I did, I would use it to describe this song. The appropriately titled track has a spacey beat, and Kollision cruises over it in a way that I would describe as “casual Quavo”. I don’t know who you are Kollision but after hearing this flow, you just made yourself a fan. I look forward to hearing more from the previously off-the-radar Atlanta rapper.)
19. “Go For Yours” - Rigz
https://soundcloud.com/rigz-585/go-for-yours-prod-by-5th?in=rigz-585/sets/i-got-samples-hosted-by-statik-selektah
(Continuing with the trend of great rap music from upstate NY, leave Buffalo for a moment and head to Rochester to check out Rigz. Rigz can flat-out rap, and this joint is just a taste of how strong he is on his new album, I Got Samples.)
20. “Dear Eastside” - Kidz In The Hall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffuXZOheq1Y
(What year is it again? No matter, the point is Kidz In The Hall are back!? Double-O and Naledge return to deliver a sound that could have easily dropped during the Native Tongue heyday. Just a beautiful homage to their home of Chicago, this is top down in the winter music. Welcome back, Kidz - and thanks for the new album!)
Merry Christmas and a happy & healthy holidays to all!! Salute.

Hip hop soul is a subgenre of contemporary R&B music, most popular during the early and mid 1990s
Hip hop soul is a subgenre of contemporary R&B music, most popular during the early and mid 1990s,[1] which fuses rhythm and blues/gospel singing with hip hop musical production.[1] The subgenre had evolved from a previous R&B subgenre, new jack swing,[2] which had incorporated hip-hop influences into R&B music.[2] By contrast, hip hop soul is, as described in The Encyclopedia of African American Music, “quite literally soul singing over hip hop grooves”.[1]
The genre was most popular during the mid 1990s[1] with artists such as Mary J. Blige (known as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul”), Mariah Carey, Jodeci, TLC, R. Kelly, and Montell Jordan.[2] By the late 1990s, hip hop soul would lead to the creation of neo soul,[1][2] which retained the hip-hop and R&B/gospel influences while also adding elements of classic 1970s soul music.[1]

Description[edit]
Hip hop soul evolved directly from new jack swing, a form of contemporary R&B popularized by artists and producers such as Teddy Riley and his group Guy, Keith Sweat, and Bobby Brown.[1][3] New jack swing had incorporated elements of hip-hop music—primarily hip-hop-inspired drum tracks and rapped verses[1]—into contemporary R&B music also heavily inspired by the work of Prince. [3] Hip hop soul took the hip-hop/R&B synthesis further by having R&B singers sing directly over the types of sample-heavy backing tracks typically found in contemporary hip-hop recordings.[1][3]
The creation and evolution of hip hop soul led to an increasingly symbiotic relationship between its parent genres.[4][5] Hip hop soul acts presented themselves in styles and personas comparable to those of rappers[3][6]—dressing in hip hop fashions and adopting a tougher image than the traditional pop-friendly personas of R&B artists[3][6] (the existence and popularity of hip hop soul also had the opposite effect on mainstream rappers, who took on some of the elements of the R&B artists’ personas to become more palatable to mainstream audiences).[5] The subgenre increased the popularity of R&B music among the younger hip-hop audience, leading to better sales and airplay success for hip hop soul recordings versus previous forms of post-disco R&B, on the Billboard pop music sales charts.[7] It also increased the popularity of hip-hop music and culture with older audiences and corporations looking to market urban music.[8] However, the creation of hip hop soul has been argued by music journalists and fans of R&B music to have “killed off” traditional styles of R&B.[5]
Other than the vocals, hip hop songs such as Hate It or Love It, contains soul samples and would be considered a “hip hop soul beat”.
History[edit]
R&B singer Mary J. Blige is known as the “queen of hip hop soul” due to her frequent collaborations with rappers and hip hop producers.[9][10]
The term “hip hop soul” is attributed to record producer and later rapper Sean “Puffy” Combs,[8] who came up with the term during the promotion of What’s the 411?, the 1992 debut album of Uptown Records artist Mary J. Blige.[8] Blige was promoted by the company as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul”, and her debut album, primarily produced by Combs, was filled with mid-tempo R&B ballads sung over hip-hop beats and samples.[8] Similarly, Diary of a Mad Band (1993), the second album from another Uptown act, Jodeci, featured the four-man male vocal group moving away from its new jack swing origins into hip hop soul recordings driven more by hip-hop rhythms than melodies.[3] A large number of male acts, both solo performers and groups, followed or competed with Jodeci, among them R. Kelly, 112, Tony! Toni! Toné![7] and Blackstreet, a second group formed by Teddy Riley.[3]
Hip hop soul artist Montell Jordan was the first R&B singer signed to hip-hop record label Def Jam Recordings;[6] his 1995 hit “This Is How We Do It“, built around a sample of Slick Rick‘s 1989 hip-hop single “Children’s Story“,[4] typified the sound of the subgenre. Another key recording is “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By“, a 1995 duet between Wu-Tang rapper Method Manand Mary J. Blige which interpolated Method Man’s rapped verses with Blige singing a cover of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell‘s “You’re All I Need to Get By“.[11] “I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By” won the 1996 Grammy Award for Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.[3]
The female vocal group TLC, made up of two singers and a rapper, like Jodeci, had their start in new jack swing (dubbed “new jill swing” in their case)[3] with their debut album, Ooooooohhh… On the TLC Tip (1992). Their second album, CrazySexyCool, to which Puffy Combs was a significant contributor, moved the group into the aesthetic of hip hop soul.[3][6] Similar female acts of the time included SWV, Adina Howard,[6] Faith Evans, and Total, the latter two acts signed to Puffy Combs’ own label, Bad Boy Entertainment.[3]
Hip hop soul as a distinct subgenre experienced a lull in popularity with the spread of hip-hop influences into more standard R&B music by the end of the 1990s[12]and the emergence of neo soul, an R&B subgenre which blended hip-hop and contemporary R&B with heavier influences from the soul music of the 1960s and 1970s.[1] Examples of neo soul artists include Tony! Toni! Toné!, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill.[3] Several newer artists continued to perform in the hip hop soul subgenre in its original form from the 2000s forward, among them John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, K.Michelle, and Keyshia Cole.[1]

We’ve all been there. Standing in the wine aisle, trying to pick out a bottle to bring home for dinner. For the vast majority who don’t know their Petite Sirahs from their Cabernet Francs, the process of elimination might start by looking for eye-catching labels. If none strike a chord, one might stick to a varietal they know, assuming they will get something familiar. And then there is always the price point option, as conventional wisdom tells us that the more expensive a bottle of wine is, the better it must be.
In a sea of competitors that all look the same, entrepreneurs have to find a way to stand out, be heard and more importantly, be remembered favorably. Winemakers face this challenge daily and have to position themselves in a unique way in order to rise to the top of their industry.
The following approaches taken by four winemakers can easily be applied by any entrepreneur looking to take their business to the next level and differentiate themselves in a saturated market.
1. Be authentic. Consumers can smell inauthenticity a mile away. If you’re claiming to be an expert or thought leader in a specific industry, it’s vital that you truly eat, drink and breathe your expertise. If you don’t, why should anyone look to you for a solution? Invite customers into your world, and build trust through transparency. If you do, you’re sure to build brand loyalty that will pay dividends in the long run.
Second generation winemakers Sean and Lindsay Garvey grew up in the Napa Valley — from winemaking families Flora Springs and Buehler — and when the two married, the creation of their own winery, Revival, was a natural next step.
Truly living a field-to-home lifestyle, where days revolve around family, farming and living off the land, the Garveys decided to share that with their customers and enhance their business by launching Revival Made, a line of products that naturally reflect an extension of their lives.
According to Lindsay Garvey, the creative mind behind the brand, “Revival Made products are narratives formed from leather, cloth, and clay; tales of collaboration that speak to our values of honest craftsmanship and love of our family and home.”
By partnering with local artisans to create limited edition, small batch products, the Garveys have successfully expanded their wine business into an authentic lifestyle brand that allows them to stay true to who they are, while simultaneously inviting consumers into their lives, as seen in this captivating video featuring their family
2. Have a story that sets you apart. Consumers gravitate towards brands that evoke an emotional response. Every company has a story; a reason why they launched their business. Think about your story. What is it? Are you able to tell it in a concise, personal way that will allow it to resonate with your customers? Make your story the centerpiece of your marketing plan and let it brand your product for you.
Santa Barbara vintner Steve Clifton was a professional musician until he put his musical aspirations on hold to pursue his interest in wine. More than 20 years later, Clifton can be credited for successfully establishing Palmina and Brewer-Clifton wineries, and with his latest venture La Voix, he has thoughtfully crafted a brand that marries his passion for wine and music.
French for “the voice,” La Voix was created to convey the voice of a vineyard, similar to the way music can elicit a powerful, emotional response. Each wine takes its name from a classic song, pairing the feeling you get from the music with the notes of the wine. For example, Rebel, Rebel is a funky Pinot Noir that is energetic and colorful, much like the music of David Bowie.
“A memory, a feeling or nostalgia can be conjured by a single note — or a single sip,” said Clifton, who also commissioned an artist to design the wine labels by letting the spirit of each song inspire her brushstrokes.
With a story like that, who wouldn’t want to open up a bottle and see how it makes them feel?
3. Design with purpose. We all know (or should know) that there is a global imperative to address climate change, and no business is exempt. Incorporating sustainability into your company from the ground up should be a no-brainer, and according to a global survey by BCG and MIT Sloan Management Review, companies who don’t may struggle to survive.
In Uruguay, billionaire Alejandro P. Bulgheroni recently opened Bodega Garzón, a stunning 205,000 square-foot winery that is the first in the world to seek LEED certification for its entire facility. From an on-site generation of energy out of renewable sources to landscaping that is oriented to enhance biodiversity, Bulgheroni’s vision always took the triple bottom line into consideration.
The development of Bodega Garzón proposes a paradigm shift that will set a new standard for the region. With a deep respect for the environment, Bulgheroni is using the winery as a tool to lead by example, as demonstrated by his sustainable design that includes more than 75,000 square feet of green roofs planted with native species.
Carlos A. Hartmann, the winery’s architect summed it up best when he said, “Today is ‘green,’ but hopefully tomorrow this would just be a compendium of best practices combined and implemented by every professional.”
Savvy consumers care about how their goods are made, as indicated in the global survey. If your brand offers sustainable products or services, you will easily sharpen your competitive edge, ultimately increasing customer loyalty.
4. Have a mission. Social impact matters. However, not everyone needs to be the next TOMS or Warby Parker with a one-to-one model in order to have a social impact. Consumers want to feel good about their purchases, and added value trumps the status quo every time.
Find a way to incorporate a give-back philosophy that is tied to a cause you champion. Entrepreneurs might hesitate to be generous when launching a new business, but more often than not, that might be the key to growing your customer base quickly.
During the 2011 holidays, Murphy-Goode winery partnered with Operation Homefront, a non-profit organization that helps military families in need. They donated a portion of proceeds to the nonprofit that year, but later decided to switch gears and collaborate in a more strategic way by releasing a custom bottle of red wine called “Homefront Red,” and for every bottle sold, the winery donates fifty cents to the nonprofit.
When asked how they chose this partnership, Winemaker David Ready Jr. said “My family has a long military background dating back to World War I, where my great-grandfather Bill Ready served in the Army. They were proud to serve our great country and would all be excited about helping our returning soldiers that gave so much for us.”
More than just a “red wine that gives back” as they coined it, it’s a marketing campaign that cleverly urges consumers to “Give Goode. Do Goode.” Murphy-Goode chose a cause that was close to their hearts and found a way to do well, by doing good.
Some of the most profitable business models find a way to blend profit and impact, so think about what matters to you and what kind of legacy you’d like to leave behind, and incorporate that into your business plan from the ground up.

TMG’s 5 Best Albums Of August 2017
After a slow start, August got swamped in it’s third week which brought us releases by UNKLE, War On Drugs, A$AP Mob, and a few others. As solid as they were, none of those albums made our list due to the high quality of other releases. I’m not exaggerating, some of these month’s picks might easily end up on a lot of Top 10 AOTY lists. Even though they didn’t make the list, I gotta shout out a few dope albums. Action Bronson dropped arguably his best Blue Chips project. Danie Caesar’s Freudian was a great R&B album that definitely delivered from top to bottom. Three Oh Sees’s Orc is a must listen for fans of experimental rock. It borders on all sorts of genres such as alt metal, punk, etc. Also, if you didn’t catch Kendrick’s VMA performance, do so right now.
Enough talk, here are TMG’s 5 best albums of August.
Sean Price – Imperius Rex
(Album Of The Month)
youtube
It’s been two years since the world lost Sean Price, one of underground rap’s most respected MCs. The artist formerly known as Ruck was working on this album at the time of his untimely death. Due to that there was a time when I feared the album may not be released, or even worse, a half-assed half finished project would drop. Instead we are treated to an album that gives the best that Sean P was, and album that ranks among his best and one of the hardest projects of 2017. Let’s be real, Imperius Rex is less of a solo album and more of a team project. According to his Bernadette Price, his wife, Sean was only 4 songs into the making of this album. It was through her guidance, and that of Dru Ha with the entire Duck Down family, that this album was completed.
A well arranged audible beatdown is handled by a lot of P’s previous collaborators such as Alchemist, Nottz, Harry Fraud, among others. They give Imperius Rex the boom bap foundation that Sean P shines over with punishing verses. Lyrically, P’s wordplay remains untouchable and as always he has moments that are equally hard body and humorous. On the album’s eponymous opener, P spits “Ruckus rule shit, get down when the tool click/Tool spit back, impact is like a mule kick/P nice and funky fire/I will fuck you up, He cypher monkey cypher/Medicated, dedicated bastard/Level elevated, tame the educated rapper”. Ridiculous lyrics such as this fuels the album and epitomizes one of the many reasons why Sean P was an underground super hero to rap fans.
Posthumous albums have rarely been anything more than a cash grab, but not this one. Bernadette and the Duck Down team managed to release a project that would make Sean P more than proud. Easily one of his best albums from any stand point. Imperius Rex is a bittersweet gift to rap fans, one of the best albums of the year from an artist who is no longer with us. R.I. P!
Stand Out Tracks: Dead Or Alive, Refrigerator P!, Rap Professor.
Manchester Orchestra – A Black Mile To The Surface
youtube
A friend who shares a similar taste in music hit me up earlier this summer and told me I had to listen to Manchester Orchestra. I’ve been familiar with the name for a few years but sadly never really sat down and gave them the full listen they deserved. Seeing as how they had a new album about to drop a few weeks later, I decided to wait until this release to really check them out. Even though I’m unfamiliar with their previous work, I don’t regret waiting one bit. I normally dive into an artists past work as soon as I realize I’m into them, but right now I’ve been too preoccupied with A Black Mile To The Surface. Even with as many listens as I’ve given it, this album has enough layers and too much to offer and I can guarantee that it will have grown on me much more by year’s end.
I’ll start off with the most obvious reason I love this album, the production is pretty fucking flawless. From the opening number, The Maze, we are greeted by Andy Hull’s soulful vocals and a gospel like chorus drowned in reverb that bleeds right into his own. The instrumentation through out in brilliantly mixed, such as the way the hook explodes on Lead, SD. One of the most standout features in this album is how effortlessly tracks transition from one into the next. The sound design in the transition which features static and background chatter smooths out the listening experience tenfold and creates a truly enjoyable listening experience. Combine all this with beautifully written lyrics and grandiose production through out every track and you have an album that doesn’t deserve to be picked apart into individual songs but explored as a whole. A Black Mile To The Surface is a phenomenal album and I’m kicking my own ass for sleeping on Manchester Orchestra for so damn long.
Stand Out Tracks: The Moth, Lead, SD, The Alien
Queens Of The Stone Age – Villains
youtube
Josh Homme is one of rock’s most brightest renaissance men. A year after producing Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression, he takes a backseat in one of his many bands, Queens Of The Stone Age. This time, Homme hands over the reins to Mark Ronson. Ronson is one of the most renown names behind some of music’s biggest talents. From Amy Winehouse to Bruno Mars, Ronson has taken over the pop landscape in the past few years, yet he has never worked with someone as heavy as QOTSA. Villains is the result of these two talents colliding. Keep in mind that QOTSA have always had dance rock tendencies and that base sound gives plenty for Ronson to work with.
The immediate connection is seen on the album’s first single, The Way You Used To Do, a riff heavy ear worm that stomps its way through the speakers. The album’s opener also deserves high praise, as it is one of the best QOTSA songs ever. Feet Don’t Fail Me Now briefly details Josh Homme’s desire to keep moving and make music as it calls to him. “Time to go, regret it later, we’re gon’ take it as it comes/ Future tense meets middle finger, we take the long way home.” he calls out on the song’s final verse. In ways, this might be Homme’s most personal QOTSA project. Villains’ most melodic track, Fortress, finds Homme giving poetic advice to his kids in times of crisis: “Every fortress falls, it is not the end/ It ain’t if you fall but how you rise that says who you really are…” Villains is not as good as Like Clockwork… or Songs For The Deaf, yet it remains a solid effort on a a pair of great discographies for both Homme and Ronson.
Stand Out Tracks: Feet Don’t Fail Me Now, The Way You Used To Do, Fortress
Brand New – Science Fiction
youtube
The past few years have been bizarre for Brand New fans. It’s been eight years since they’re last album, Daisy. In between, there have been rumors, RIP t-shirts, new singles, breakup announcements, etc. All this made it seem like their fifth LP was becoming more and more of a myth. Then out of nowhere, a schedules October release date, which led to a completely surprise album release in the middle of August. The few so-called singles that the band had released are nowhere to be found in this LP, instead choosing to give their fans 12 brand new Brand New songs.
Science Fiction is a departure from Daisy, which was considered their heaviest and darkest release. But they’ve always been a band that celebrates growth, with every release a further change in sound from their pop punk roots. In a melodic sense, Science Fiction ties itself closer to their biggest critically acclaimed release, The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Of Me, but takes it one step further. There are no post-hardcore screams, and even in it’s hardest moments, it’s tame in comparison to previous albums. What Science Fiction offers an acoustic guitar taking the lead in most songs and Jesse Lacey’s vocals at their most tender. The melancholic tone of the album can’t help but feel as a final swan song for the Long Island rockers as their career fades to black. Whether this is really Brand New’s last album or not, they’ve left a legacy that most bands will never achieve, and a stellar final project.
Stand Out Tracks: Can’t Get It Out, Same Logic/Teeth, 451
BROCKHAMPTON – Saturation 2
youtube
Only two months after their first release this year, the Texas rappers drop the sequel in their Saturation trilogy, aptly titled Saturation 2. In case you’re out of the loop, BROCKHAMPTON is a 15 man collective and one of the best young crews in hip hop today. The group has been hard at work ever since Kevin Abstract’s vice series, American Boyband, placed a spotlight on them. Production is once again almost exclusively handled by Romni Hemnani who provides some cohesiveness across the sixteen tracks with bouncy rhythms through out. Whether it’s Ameer Vann’s syrup like monotone flow, Kevin Abstract’s animated delivery, or Meryl Wood’s Jamaican ODB-like shouts, the diversity in each member’s flow gives the group it’s unique identity.
The album starts out on fire with GUMMY; a neck breaking beat serves as a backdrop for all the BH members to shine over sinister keys and a high pitched synth that pierces through your headphones. Out of the whole crew, Ameer and Kevin deliver the best performances through out the album, and they each get a short solo track to demonstrate this such as Ameer’s emotional verse on TEETH. But as strong as their individual verses are, they are strongest when their chemistry shines together. SWEET has the crew at their all around best with upbeat production as Dom McLennon’s wordplay weaves in seamlessly “The original lick-splickety, higher than Yosemite/ Breaking the mold mentally, master with no limiting/ Making ’em say “ugh!”” With their 2nd release this year and almost a dozen videos, BROCKHAMPTON aims to over-saturate the viral hip hop market with quality and originality, and part 3 is only a few weeks away.

Episode 145 : Setting Levels
"Appetite for construction..."
- Swigga
We celebrate another birthday for the podcast this month, marking twelve full years since that inaugural experimental episode! This month's mix includes new tracks from artists who are setting themselves new standards, as well as some deep album cuts, B-sides, and unreleased gems. Sadly, we also mark the passing of Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, who left us just a few days ago. We include just one of his tracks this month, but he's an MC who left a deep body of work behind for us to continue to celebrate.

Playlist/Notes
Children of Zeus : I Need You
Manchester's finest are back with their brand new album "Balance" and this was an early favourite of mine. Not uptempo, but much more so than "I Want You", with lots of bump, Tyler and Konny gave themselves a perfect canvas to get busy on the vocals. Go get that album!
Ilajide : Please Set Me At Ease
If Ilajide punches as hard as his beats are, a lot of heavyweights could be in trouble. Always bringing the heat, he shows his literal chops right here on this beat from the "Latex" LP.
Cocoa Brovaz : Get Up
For those that never knew or had forgotten, there was a period of almost ten years when due to the threat of legal action from the firearm manufacturer of similar name, Smif-N-Wessun had to change their name to Cocoa Brovaz. During this time you could hear the Brooklyn legends popping up on all kinds of quality records, and this was no exception - the B-side to the Mos Def/Pharoahe/Nate Dogg "Oh No" single, and a worthy inclusion on the "Lyricist Lounge 2" collection. Hi-Tek's beat on this was unconventional back in 2000 and still stands out as unusual today.
Special Teamz ft. Sean Price : Boston To Bucktown
Special Teamz was a Boston supergroup made up of Edo G, Jaysaun, and Slaine, who dropped the "Stereotypez" album in 2007. As signees to Duck Down Records, it was a natural move to tap them up for a guest appearance - and here, the late great Sean Price joins them on this Pete Rock-produced cut.
LL Cool J : Summer Luv
The B-Side to "Loungin'" and an inclusion on the deluxe edition of "Mr. Smith", this is a track I just don't hear enough! LL isn't showing love to the weak MCs he takes out on this one, and Rashad Smith's beat is a punchy and relatively sparse bit of 90s boom-bap crispiness.
Rakim : Last Resort
I think this one may have slipped past a lot of listeners - I got it on one of those random bootleg 12"s - entitled "Unreleased Jewels", released in 2003. According to Discogs, Da Beatminerz provided the beat, and it's an overall solid track. The hook is borrowed from a line from one of my favourite Rakim records, "Teach The Children" from the "Don't Sweat The Technique" LP.
Moods, Yasper : Vibe Vibe
From the "Endless Sunday Vol.1" album, these two Dutch producers on the Chillhop label do indeed bring the vibe. This would do the job for cruising with the top down, BBQing in the backyard, relaxing in the park - it's a pure summery feel-good track!
Swigga : Pendulum
1/3 of the great Natural Elements crew here, from his brand new LP "Sunset Mindset (Swigga SZN)". I can't quite describe the sound - it's dramatic, with a little rock edge to it - almost like a stadium track. Swigga (who some of you will have known as L-Swift) matches the vibe without going head-to-head in loudness, and keeps the flow accessible on the surface - but check the multisyllabic rhymes.
Blackalicious ft. Lyrics Born : Do This My Way
RIP Gift of Gab. He may have been in less than ideal health for some time, but his passing still hit the community hard. On this track from the Blackalicious debut LP "Nia", Lyrics Born of Latryx produces as well as supplying his half-sung, half-rapped vocals as the special guest, but without Gab, it wouldn't have been the tune that it is. He holds down his side of the lyrics with the skill and insight that made him a favourite for those that knew throughout his whole career.
The Mouse Outfit : Sunrise (Shift Ops Remix)
We switch into a little D&B mode here with a remix of a fairly recent track by The Mouse Outfit - in fact, I played it here on episode 132 when it came out! You still get the vocals of One Only, but Chini and Metrodome's production has to move over a little for the work of fellow Mancunian Shift Ops, with sharp drums and plenty of low end.
Lenzman & Konny Kon : Food
Staying with the vibe for one more track, the Metalheadz veteran combines with Manchester's own Konny Kon - no stranger to D&B by a long shot - who flows at half time over this extra-clean track from the 2019 "Bobby" LP.
[Charlemagne] Natural Elements : Paper Chase (Instrumental)
A dope 80s sample for those in the know, with the added bass and slow-walking boom-bap drums on the top make this a personal favourite. 100% check the vocal version of this track by the incredibly underappreciated Natural Elements - I played it a while back, pick up a copy if you can!
Mobb Deep : All Mines
"...where the people do murder for money" is a hell of a half-bar at the kick-off of the second verse, the kind of classic Prodigy line that would have been scratched and sampled in the late 90s for sure. Not much info on this track, which was on a 2005 bootleg release, so I don't know if Havoc produced it or not, but that menacing beat with that muted trumpet accent running through it is dopeness for sure.
Skyzoo & Aaria : St. James Liquors
Brooklyn bars from Skyzoo, from his new "All The Brilliant Things" album, which is themed around the gentrification of his home borough. Kenny Keys' beat is a bass-heavy gem, and Detroit vocalist Aaria adds a little sparkle on the hook.
Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth : What's Next On The Menu?
Classic Pete Rock and C.L! This was banging heavy on the pirates and mixtapes when it dropped back in 1993 - it was on the soundtrack to the Hip-Hop cameo-packed "Who's The Man?" as well as the apparently unofficial "Never Coming Out" EP (banned from Discogs). Pete Rock blends three huge staple samples on this one but still has ir sounding fresh, and C.L. glides on the jeep-rocking beat. Straight winner.
Platinum Pied Pipers ft. Jay Dee : Act Like You Know
Heavy, nasty, grinding. Perfect. The late great Jay Dee/J Dilla features on this track produced by Waajeed, one of his protoges. Waajeed and Saadiq made up PPP, whose debut "Triple P" definitely worth having in your collection - a mix of Hip-Hop and soul with a kind of jazzy sensibility in places.
Marco Polo : Ps and Qs (Remix Instrumental)
Just a nice instrumental from Marco's "Baker's Dozen" compilation. I had to loop this up a little bit to stretch it out, as he kept it very short and sweet. MP on the MP strikes once again!
Nipsey Hussle and Jay-Z : What It Feels Like
A cross-continental meeting of the lyrics, if not the minds, as the late Nipsey Hussle combines with Jay on this selection from the "Judas and the Black Messiah : The Inspired Album", taking its spark from the film about the assassination of Black Panther Fred Hampton. Nipsey recorded this verse eight years ago, and didn't like the song at the time. It was developed in stages over years, with more and more instrumentation and arrangement, plus Jay's verse rougly a year ago. The final product is bombastic and epic-sounding, with the production headed up by Mike & Keys, and there are a stack of guests in the background - for me, highlighted by the distinctive vocals of James Fauntleroy. It was clearly worth the wait,
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

How dope is this? Talented NJ producer Mr. Green linked with Sean Price for one of P’s last appearances on camera, on Green’s Live From The Streets series. The resulting video is a sad but fantastic celebration of culture, music, and life, plus a taste of all the things that made Sean Price a truly special hip-hop artist.

Adele, Beyonce give 2017 Grammy's some life
Adele swept the 2017 Grammy Awards, but she made more news from her technical difficulties resulting in an 'f-bomb' drop during her emotional tribute to George Michael. She had the audience with her as she remained the true pro and stated that she wanted to start again because Michael deserved better than what she began with. The result was a stirring song delivered flawlessly with an audience in tears feeling the emotion. Later in the evening, even her acceptance speech for song of the year was interrupted by that annoying play-off music for her collaborator Greg Kurstin. This resulted in the crowd booing, but Adele got her say when they won again for record of the year. Adele scolded, “You cut him off last time!” James Corden delivered a satisfactory performance as host, but the evening belonged to Adele and Beyonce with neither disappointing. Adele's opening "Hello" was stark and bare of any distractions with only her powerful voice filling the room. Beyonce, on the other hand, had it all. Queen Bey was introduced by her mother, and then those familiar opening chords from "Love Drought" came on from Lemonade. It was a production number that had it all and felt like a video come to life. She was eager to show her tummy clad in a golden headdress, and she delivered an epic production. Beautiful, stunning and fabulous were the words that quickly came to mind during her show.
