Circular Letter from the Woman's Protest Committee on the Statehood Bill
Record Group 46: Records of the U.S. SenateSeries: Petitions and Related Documents That Were Presented, Read, or TabledFile Unit: Petitions and Memorials, Resolutions of State Legislatures, and Related Documents Which Were Tabled
WOMAN'S PROTEST COMMITTEE.
[small horizontal line]
"The Status of Woman Marks the Degree of a Nation's Civilization."
OCTOBER 22nd, 1904.
DEAR MADAM:-A bill is now pending in Congress which so vitally affects the interests of women in the great South-
West that we believe you and your organization would like to protest against the injustice therein threatened our sisters.
The bill proposes to unite Oklahoma and Indian Territories into one State under the name of Oklahoma, and to com-
bine New Mexico and Arizona Territories into a State under the name of Arizona. This measure has passed the Lower House
of Congress, has been read twice in the Senate and is now before the Senate Committee on Territories, of which Senator Al-
bert J Beveridge is Chairman, and the following named Senators are also members: William P. Dillingham, Knute Nelson,
Thomas R. Bard, Henry E. Burnham, John Kean, William B. Bate, Thomas M. Patterson, James P. Clarke and Francis G.
Newlands. Now is the time to amend, while the bill is in Committee.
The portion of the bill threatening injustice to the women in the proposed new States is found in Paragraph 5 of Sec-
tions 3 and 21, which would allow these States, when organized, to disfranchise minors, criminals, lunatics, non-residents,
ignoramuses and [italic] women. This part of the bill reads as follows:
"Fifth-That said State shall never enact any law restricting or abridging the right of suffrage on account
"of race, color, or previous condition of servitude, or on account of any other conditions or qualificartions, save
"and except on account of illiteracy, minority, [italic] sex, conviction of felony, mental condition, or residence; pro-
vided, however, that any such restrictions shall be made uniform and applicable alike to all citizens."
There may be other objections to this part of the bill, that Congress gratuitously interferes to forbid negro disfranchise-
ment, or disfranchisement "for any other conditions or qualifications," which latter will prevent disfranchisement for lack of
United States citizenship, a prohibition never before laid on a State. This wording will be interpreted by some as even pro-
hibiting the future enfranchisement of women in these new States. These paragraphs might well be omitted.
But the injustice to women might be averted if only the word "sex" were stricken from the paragraphs. The pioneer
women of the West, who have labored and suffered by their husbands' sides to advance civilization, ought not to be so unjustly
classed with felons, lunatics and children, while their own husbands, equals in other respects, are enfranchised. The Congress
of the United States ought not to set its seal upon the possibility of the perpetual disfranchisement of these women, an un-
merited disgrace and punishment. It is true that in many States women have been tacitly ranked with these defective delin-
quent and dependent classes, but never before has the insult been so open and flagrant, nor has it been in an Act of Congress.
The representative of the United States Government, the Territorial Governor of Arizona, once before interfered in
Arizona legislation to the defeat of women, by vetoing the woman suffrage bill passed by the Legislature of Arizona.
The women of all our great country should now protest against the women of the Southwest being ranked with the
classed justly disfranchised, any other member of which may be effort, behavior, or lapse of time, achieve enfranchisement.
Will you not ask your organization to write to the two Senators from your own State, to Senator Beveridge, the Chair-
man of the Committee on Territories, and to the rest of the Committee, asking each to work for the omission of the word
"sex" from the two paragraphs quoted above, or for the omission of the entire paragraphs.
There is need of haste in this matter and we urge action by your organization at the earliest possible date.
The sending out of this letter is authorized by the following named women, who, as individuals, urge you to take
speedy action:
Mrs. Ellen M. Henrotin, Honorary President General Federation of Women's Clubs; Miss Susan B. Anthony, Honorary
President National American Woman Suffrage Association; Mrs. Mary Wood Swift, President National Council of Women;
Mrs. Hannah G. Solomon, President National Council Jewish Women; Rev. Anna H. Shaw, President National American

Excerpt from this story from AZPM:
A Phoenix Zoo wildlife study recorded the video in the Atascosa Mountains in the Coronado National Forest.
Laiken Jordahl with the Center for Biological Diversity says it is encouraging to know that the ocelot in this region can still find their way across the border, despite lots of border walls in the area.
“This mountain range where the cat was documented, it's been seen a lot of border wall construction, especially over the last 10 years," he said. "We are seeing the cross-border wildlife corridors in this region be slowly shut. So if we want to see more cats in Arizona, if we want to see them recolonize their native range, we have to ensure that new sections of border wall are not built and don’t seal off these mountains.”
He said more border barriers would shut out breeding populations of ocelots on the southern side of the border.

A creeper confesses to his bishop. He’s raping his 5-year-old daughter.
For seven years, the bishop tells no one outside his church – remaining silent, as a church lawyer advises him to do – and the abuse continues. Then the creeper starts raping another daughter, just six weeks old.
Last week, a Cochise County judge dismissed a lawsuit brought by several of the creeper's children against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
It’s galling, though not surprising, that a judge would decline to hold the church responsible. While Arizona has a mandatory reporting law for teachers and doctors and such, members of the clergy are not required to report a confession that a child is being abused.
What is shocking stunning, really – is that a key state legislator won’t even consider changing the law to carve out an exemption that might have protected that 5-year-old girl, her sister and God only knows how many other children.
Rapist's rights trump those of his victim
“The seal of confession is a sacred, sacred part of the Catholic church,’’ Rep. Quang Nguyen, who is Catholic, recently told Capitol Media Services' Howard Fischer.
Put another way, a rapist’s sacred religious rights trump a child’s sacred right to be protected from a sexual predator? Really, sir?
This horror story was brought to light last year, the result of an Associated Press investigation into the Mormon church’s handling of child sexual abuse cases.
Paul Adams, of Bisbee, a father of six, admitted during a counseling session with his bishop that he was raping his then-5-year-old daughter.
According to court records, Bishop John Herrod called the church’s help line, which is used by bishops to report child sex abuse to church officials in Salt Lake City, and was advised by attorney not to call the police or alert anyone outside the church. According to the AP, which based its report on court records, attorney Merrill Nelson advised Herrod and his eventual replacement, Bishop Robert "Kim" Mauzy, for more than two years not to report Adams.
So they didn’t – instead trying to persuade Adams to seek help – and the rest, as they say, is horrifying history.
Church's silence let abuse go on for years
The abuse went on until finally in 2017, Adams was arrested. It seems he videoed his perverted attacks of his children and posted them on the internet. Authorities in New Zealand and the United States traced one of the videos to Adams, who later died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial.
Three of Adams’ six children sued the church, the bishops and other church officials in 2021, accusing them of negligence and conspiring to cover up child sex abuse to avoid “costly lawsuits” and protect the church's reputation.
In a Nov. 3 ruling, Cochise County Superior Court Judge Timothy Dickerson threw out the lawsuit, saying the church had no legal duty to report that a child was being raped.
"Church defendants were not required under the Mandatory Reporting Statute to report the abuse of Jane Doe 1 by her father because their knowledge of the abuse came from confidential communications which fall within the clergy-penitent exception," Dickerson wrote.
Arizona legislator thwarts bill for clergy to report abuse
Church officials, who apparently sleep quite well at night, pronounced themselves “pleased” with the decision.
“Contrary to some news reports and exaggerated allegations, the court found that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its clergy handled this matter consistent with Arizona law,” the Mormon church said in a prepared statement.
Which bring us back to Arizona law and the people who make it at the state Capitol.
Rep. Stacey Travers, D-Phoenix, introduced a bill this year to require a member of the clergy to report abuse learned about during a confession or confidential communication if “there is a reasonable suspicion to believe that the abuse is ongoing, will continue or may be a threat to other minors.”
It didn’t even rate a hearing. Didn’t even get assigned to a committee.
His rationale: Victims can turn to others for help
And, apparently, it won’t go anywhere next year either, as Rep. Quang Nguyen, the Prescott Republican who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, says he won’t give the bill a hearing. (He did say he would at least speak to Travers, so I guess there's that.)
Nguyen, in his interview with Capitol Media Services, said he believes that the bill "is an attack on the church," and he questioned why members of the clergy would need to call the police or state Department of Child Safety.
"The victim has the parents, the victim has the teachers, the victim has friends, the victim has relatives that he or she is close to," Nguyen said. "So, it doesn’t need a priest to be able to go to court and testify."
Tell that to the 5-year-old Bisbee girl who would endure seven years of assaults while devout daddy’s bishops stayed silent.
“They just let it keep happening,” the girl told the AP last year. “They just said, ‘Hey, let’s excommunicate her father.’ It didn’t stop. ‘Let’s have them do therapy.’ It didn’t stop. ‘Hey, let’s forgive and forget and all this will go away.’ It didn’t go away.”
For her, it likely never will.
Perhaps Rep. Nguyen can explain to her that her father’s rights were sacred.
“The seal of confession is never to be broken,’’ he said. “And priests will go to jail for it.’’
And children will live in hell because of it.
For shame, Rep. Nguyen.

I saw this back when I used to use Reddit (for animal crossing and trans+ stuff mostly), and I felt so honoured that they used my Florida flag redesign in this that I screenshotted it. But when I looked to find the original poster, they had deleted the post (likely because of negative replies, vexillology Reddit is scary).
Tumblr media
They recreated the state flags to be more about symbolism and individuality rather than about aesthetics (which is the problem I see with a lot of over simplified state flags). All while keeping the flags that actually carry deep meaning and are beloved by the residents.
I’m not the biggest fan of Nebraska’s, Virginia’s, and Wisconsin’s, but all the others are wonderful (especially Florida’s… I will not apologize for being biased lol)
The original Reddit person’s caption:
“I kept some flags which I believe are currently great. Most of them are all over State merchandise, and people of these states carry a lot of state pride for these flags. They are:
1. Alabama
2. Alaska
3. Arizona
4. Arkansas
5. California
6. Colorado
7. lowa
8. Maryland
9. Mississippi
10. Missouri
11. New Mexico
12. Ohio, my home state! [not mine, OPs]
13. Rhode Island
14. South Carolina
15. Tennessee
16. Texas
17. Utah
18. Wyoming
19. District of Columbia [I believe you mean the Douglass Commonwealth]
20. Guam
21. The Northern Mariana Islands
22. Puerto Rico
I've switched some State’s boring Seal on a Bedsheet flags into their more popular historical ones. They are:
23. Conecticut ~ New England Flag
24. Hawaii ~ Kanaka Maoli
25. Maine ~ Original State Flag
26. Vermont ~ Green Mountain Boys Flag
27. Virginia ~ Gadsden Flag
28. West Virginia ~ Original State Flag
I've made a few tweaks to some existing flags so they look more unique / are more easily recognizable. They are:
29. Indiana ~ Golden Frame
30. New Jersey ~ Added Stripes
31. North Carolina ~ Un-Tex-ified
32. Oklahoma ~ Added Stripes
33. American Samoa ~ Added Southern Cross
I designed some using the Pan Cascade colours for the Pacific Northwest (BC will have the tree one). They are:
34. Idaho
35. Oregon
36. Washington
I borrowed some other designs which I found on here which I found beautiful. I mostly looked for flags which were designed by locals from the states that they are redesigning or included state symbols on their old flags. They are:
37. Florida [omg they chose mine!!!]
38. Georgia
39. Kansas
40. Kentucky
41. Louisiana
42. Michigan
43. Montana
44. Nevada
45. New Hampshire
46. New York
47. North Dakota [I prefer my communist flag better wajajaja]
48. Pennsylvania
49. South Dakota
50. Wisconsin
51. Virgin Islands
I left the flags currently in the process of a redesign blank, for, given the recent track record, any new flags are probably going to look amazing like Utah’s and Mississippi’s. They are:
52. Illinois [this is your reminder to vote for your new state flag if you’re from this state!!!]
53. Massachusetts [this is your reminder to vote for your new state flag if you’re from this state!!!]
54. Minnesota [this is your reminder to vote for your new state flag if you’re from this state!!!]
I kept one Seal on a Bedsheet flag to honour this horrid time in American vexillological history. That is:
55. Delaware
And lastly
56. Nebraska (idk)”
While I agree with most of the OP’s opinions, I think Nebraska’s flag would look better if it looked something like this:
Tumblr media
Better designed of course, I made this on Pic Collage in like 5 minutes
Im not sure about Wisconsin and Virginia, I just know I’m not the biggest fan of either (since Virginia’s flag has a separate meaning and Wisconsin’s is just bland.
Let me know what you think!
And if you’re the OP of this, please let me know, I like your choices!!

Arizona Senate race news: Republican Kari Lake and others have been screaming to unseal divorce filings between Democratic Senatorial candidate Ruben Gallego and his now ex-wife, insisting that there is something shady and horrible going on to lead them to seal the records and deal with it in a different county. Kate Gallego is mayor of the city of Phoenix, which is in Maricopa county, and it appears that they agreed to do it in a different county to protect the privacy of their child and family.
Now that the issue has been pressed, it turns out there was absolutely nothing newsworthy, unless you consider an incredibly amicable divorce between two parents who mutually wished to coparent in a responsible and loving way newsworthy.
This is insulting and rude, and a politically motivated violation of decency and privacy. It is impossible for many Republicans to imagine two adults being mature and reasonable in realizing that they are no longer a match as spouses, but acting respectfully and legally to continue to be good parents for their child.
Republicans don't care about families. They don't care about marriages. They want to drag everyone's private lives out in the spotlight to shame and harass and smear. And don't even get me started on people (not just Republicans, in fact many on the Left) who assume that the man was violent or abusive in every situation.
I'm proud to have voted for Ruben Gallego - he has served our country with honor, both in the military and in the House of Representatives.

NFL Week 5 Winners and Losers
Tumblr media
Photo: Brett Davis-Imagn Images
By: BenJarmin Munguia
Date: October 8th, 2024
Week 5 is over; let's see how badly I did. Do I need to be on this list? Some teams did decent, others tanked, and some might have fans returning the brown paper bags. Let's see who made the list.
Winner
Kirk Cousins
Cousin and the Atlanta Falcons held off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a thriller overtime game on Thursday, scoring 30-36, but quarterback Kirk Cousins had himself a game. Going 42-of-58 for a career-high 509 passing yards and 4 touchdowns, giving the Falcons first place in the NFC South, with a 3-2 record.
It is also essential to know that even when the Falcons were inducting former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan into their team's hall of fame, Cousins broke Ryan's passing record that night with 509 passing yards of what was previously set by Matt Ryan with 503 yards in 2016.
Winner
Jacksonville Jaguars
It only took 5 games, but you won your first game of the year!
Winner
Arizona Cardinals
Impressive road win by the Cardinals, who were struggling at 1-3, able to beat their divisional rivals, the San Francisco 49ers, in the heat at Levi Stadium, 24-23.
This win is interesting because the Cardinals were down by 10 twice and by 13 at halftime. In the second half, the Cardinals' defense shut out the explosive 49ers' offense and forced 3 turnovers, including the game-sealing interception by Cardinals linebacker Kyzir White. This win gives the Cardinals the edge in the NFC West.
Winner
Xavier McKinney
Green Bay Packers Xavier McKinney has five interceptions in the season's first five games. He has more interceptions than 24 other teams in the NFL; specifically, he's got more interceptions than the Jaguars, Commanders, and Titans combined.
Winner
Bryce Ford-Wheaton.
The New York Giants were up 23-20 with 45 seconds left in the game, while the Seattle Seahawks attempted a game-tying field goal to send the game into overtime. However, this dream came to an end when the Giants blocked Seattle's field goal attempt and Bryce Ford-Wheaton to it in for the score, clinching the Giants' 29-20 victory, moving the Giants to 2-3 on the season while handing the Seahawks their second straight loss of the season, what an ending that was in the Northwest part of the country.
Winner
NFL Fans.
If you got up at the crack of dawn to watch the Jets-Vikings play in London, all the way through until the end of the Cowboys-Steelers game on Sunday night football, you are a true winner. Sunday night football ended at 12:55 am ET due to the delay in the start of the game due to inclement weather. The game didn't start at 9:45 am ET, and the Jets-Vikings game started at 9:30 am ET due to the game being played in London, England.
Losers
Cincinnati Bengals.
Your quarterback should not throw 5 touchdowns, put up 38 points, and still lose. Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow put up 392 passing yards and 5 touchdowns, and the Bengals still could not knock off the Baltimore Ravens to a score of 41-38, and what a game that was.
The Bengals became the fifth team in the last ten years to score 38 points or more and still lose. This is the Bengals' second game this season, where they have scored 30 points or more and still lost. What is going on with that defense?
Losers
New Orleans Saints.
The Saints had us in the first two games, putting up back-to-back 40-point games. Now, they have lost three straight, not a good look after such a fiery start. Where did all of that go???? Sure, they played the Panthers and the Cowboys defense, but this team has taken a complete 180 since Week 2.
Losers
Ryan Rehkow.
The Bengals could have won the game with the game-winning field goal if you held the ball right for McPhearson, but now you're 1-4.
Losers
Cleveland Browns
The Browns are 1-4 and might be one of the worst football teams in the league. With the offensive line allowing 18 sacks in the last five games, your 200 million dollar quarterback can have a game where he plays decent, and your head coach won't eleven bother making a change at quarterback for one game???? It won't be long before Cleveland brings back the brown paper bags and has the first pick overall in the next draft.
Losers
Miami Dolphins.
I never thought how important Tua would be to the Dolphins' offense. Even with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De'von Achene, the fact that you can't put up over 20 points in a game is mind-boggling.
The Dolphins have scored only 60 points all season, averaging 12 points per game. I get that your star quarterback is hurt, but with these weapons, you have to be prepared if your quarterback gets hurt. There is too much talent on that team to only put up 60 points through the first five games.
Was there anyone I missed this week who should be on this list? Let me know.

Thoughts at 530pm..
Today was SUCH a good day.
Do you know how incredible it feels to be able to go out when it's in the low 70s, a nice breeze, and the water is just gorgeous?
We're just a couple of miles away from the waterfront.
There is so much to see and do here, and this time of year the weather is so nice and people are all at work and in school when we're free to roam.
I've been so spoiled my entire life because I knew I would always end up "home." Whenever I was in another state, or another country I never really got homesick until we were in Arizona. It was always fun to explore places, see new things, try new foods.. places had stuff that was exciting!
Arizona... didn't. It was either too damn hot (record number of over 100 days in a row!!!) or it was just.. half meh/half ick. Everything was just dirt and rock and - that's it. There was very little to explore, very little to see or do.
Let me explain why I love here - We have a VERY large green park with multiple lakes, model plane airfield, model boat lake, fishing, and ducks and a train area and a dog park and just so much to see and explore with so much life around.
Across the street is a nature reserve with multiple hiking trails (6 different paths in fact) and it has so much to see and do including so many cute turtles!
There's a small park just across the street which has a lot of grassy area to walk and it's shady and nice.
To the south is a lagoon, a real salt water lagoon with a beach and a bridge that goes across the middle of the water and the bridge goes down to a landing at water level so you can sit there and look at all the sea life and even go swimming. It even has a fake beach so you basically park the car, there's a small strip of sand, and then water! Easy peasy to set up and relax for the day!
Then we have mothers beach which is nearby and right on the inlet so you can watch all of the boats go by, or even rent outriggers, paddle boards, and canoes!
Then you have the actual ocean with so much to see and do along the water front.
You have naples canal which has so many beautiful homes and stuff to see and explore.
2nd street with all of the shops, bars, and restaurants is right there too!
We also have a japanese garden close by!
And that's just right NEAR me. That's not even talking about going to the aquarium, or the lighthouse, or shoreline village or the queen mary! Or going to seal beach! Or driving down PCH through HB and Newport and everything!
All day, every day, every week there are festivals, there are food festivals, music festivals, a whiskey tasting festival. There are air shows, and marathons, bike races, and even an indy car street race!
The entire time we were in AZ you know what there was? - I don't. We looked, we tried to explore... there... wasn't shit.
And all of these things are outdoors and away from people so we're still COVID safe. This doesn't even include all the cool arts & crafts fairs, the farmers markets and the swap meets/flea markers!
I love this place.

Green Bay Packers Season Recap So Far: The Highs and Lows
As the NFL season progresses, the Green Bay Packers have provided their fans with a mix of excitement and anxiety, showcasing both the potential and the hurdles of the 2024 campaign. Here’s a detailed recap of their season so far, with an analysis of each game week, highlighting the key moments that have defined the Packers’ journey.
Week by Week Breakdown
Week 1: Philadelphia 34, Green Bay 29 The season opener was a tough test against the Eagles, with Jordan Love leaving the game injured. The Packers showcased a resilient spirit, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win against a formidable Philadelphia side led by an impressive performance from Saquon Barkley.
Week 2: Green Bay 16, Indianapolis 10 A win that was hard-earned, primarily through a ground-heavy game. Malik Willis stepped in for the injured Jordan Love, and Josh Jacobs carried a significant load, marking a victory that balanced the early setback from week 1.
Week 3: Green Bay 30, Tennessee 14 Malik Willis showed he could handle the starting role, leading the Packers to a solid victory with support from a staunch defensive performance, highlighted by a pick-six from Jaire Alexander.
Week 4: Minnesota 31, Green Bay 29 A close defeat in a high-stakes game saw Jordan Love struggling with accuracy, possibly due to his knee injury. Despite a valiant comeback attempt, defensive lapses allowed the Vikings to cling to a narrow win.
Week 5: Green Bay 24, L.A. Rams 19 The Packers’ defense stood out, with Xavier McKinney intercepting a pass for the fifth consecutive game. The team’s ability to force turnovers was a crucial element in overcoming the Rams.
Week 6: Green Bay 34, Arizona 13 Jordan Love returned to form, throwing four touchdowns and demonstrating deep pass capabilities that hinted at his full recovery and potential. The return of Romeo Doubs also added a spark to the receiving corps.
Week 7: Green Bay 24, Houston 22 In a nail-biter, the Packers edged out Houston with a last-minute field goal by newcomer Brandon McManus. This win was particularly significant as it came against a team with a winning record, setting a different tone for the quality of Green Bay’s victories.
Week 8: Green Bay 30, Jaguars 27 The Packers win another nail-biter, again with a game-winning field goal by McManus. The Packers blew a two score lead in the fourth quarter after losing Jordan Love to injury. But Malik Willis threw a beauty to Jayden Reed with less than two minutes to go to set up McManus. Willis is 3-0 in games played this year.
Week 9: Detroit 24, Green Bay 14  No nail-biter here. The Packers were destroyed by the Lions. Love returned from injury but threw another terrible pick-six that sealed the Packers’ fate late in the first half. The Lions went up 24-3 to start the third quarter and it was game over. The Packers fall to 0-2 in the division.
Analysis
The Packers’ season has been a rollercoaster, marked by key injuries and thrilling comebacks. The team’s performance has notably improved as Jordan Love finds his rhythm post-injury, and the defense steps up to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes. However, inconsistencies, particularly in special teams and pass defense, highlight areas needing attention as the season progresses.
Navigating the Odds: The Betting Angle
As the NFL season unfolds, the conversations around the Green Bay Packers extend beyond the field and into the realms of sports betting, where the over under NFL bets captivate both seasoned and novice bettors alike.
These discussions aren’t limited to traditional media; they thrive in the digital age through various Packers-focused podcasts. These platforms dissect every play, decision, and future matchup, naturally weaving in betting odds and fan expectations into each episode. This integration of sports betting into daily fan discussions not only enriches the fan experience but also enhances the strategic appreciation of the game, as listeners and viewers engage with the nuances of NFL betting while rallying behind the Packers.
Conclusion
As we look towards the rest of the season, the Packers are positioned to make significant strides. The integration of sports betting and media coverage has indeed added a layer of excitement and analysis, broadening the dialogue around each game. With a solid core and emerging talents, Green Bay is poised for a potentially deep playoff run, aiming not just to compete, but to excel in a fiercely competitive NFC North.
For fans and analysts alike, the Packers offer much to discuss, debate, and anticipate. Each game week brings new stories, and as always, the heart-stopping moments that make NFL football irresistibly compelling.

By Shane Goldmacher and Lisa Lerer
Donald J. Trump rode a promise to smash the American status quo to win the presidency for a second time, surviving a criminal conviction, indictments, an assassin’s bullet, accusations of authoritarianism and an unprecedented switch of his opponent to complete a remarkable return to power.
Mr. Trump’s victory caps the astonishing political comeback of a man who was charged with plotting to overturn the last election but who tapped into frustrations and fears about the economy and illegal immigration to defeat Vice President Kamala Harris.
His defiant plans to upend the country’s political system held appeal to tens of millions of voters who feared that the American dream was drifting further from reach and who turned to Mr. Trump as a battering ram against the ruling establishment and the expert class of elites.
In a deeply divided nation, voters embraced Mr. Trump’s pledge to seal the southern border by almost any means, to revive the economy with 19th-century-style tariffs that would restore American manufacturing and to lead a retreat from international entanglements and global conflict.
Now, Mr. Trump will serve as the 47th president four years after reluctantly leaving office as the 45th, the first politician since Grover Cleveland in the late 1800s to lose re-election to the White House and later mount a successful run. At the age of 78, Mr. Trump has become the oldest man ever elected president, breaking a record held by President Biden, whose mental competence Mr. Trump has savaged.
His win ushers in an era of uncertainty for the nation.
To roughly half the country, Mr. Trump’s rise portends a dark turn for American democracy, whose future will now depend on a man who has openly talked about undermining the rule of law. Mr. Trump helped inspire an assault on the Capitol in 2021, has threatened to imprison political adversaries and was denounced as a fascist by former aides. But for his supporters, Mr. Trump’s provocations became selling points rather than pitfalls.
On Wednesday, the results showed Mr. Trump improving on his 2020 showing in a red wave of counties all across America with only limited exceptions. Mr. Trump had flipped Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania and held North Carolina, delivering him the 270 Electoral College votes he needed to win the White House.
Mr. Trump was leading in the tally of three other swing states — Arizona, Michigan and Nevada — leaving the open the possibility of a clean sweep. He also held an early edge in the popular vote, which he had lost in 2016 even while winning the White House.
Republicans also picked up at least three Senate seats, in Ohio, Montana and West Virginia, to give the party a majority in the Senate. Control of the House of Representatives was still too close to call.
In a victory speech in West Palm Beach, Fla., Mr. Trump declared that he was the leader of “the greatest political movement of all time.”
“We overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible,” he said, adding that he would take office with an “unprecedented and powerful mandate.”
Mr. Trump seemingly had to win two races this year.
First, he overcame Mr. Biden, who quit the race after a halting debate performance raised questions about the president’s fitness to serve four more years. Then, he defeated Ms. Harris in a caustic 107-day crucible of a campaign that was ugly, insult-filled and bitter. Mr. Trump questioned Ms. Harris’s racial identity at one point and frequently denigrated her intelligence. They clashed over wildly divergent views of not just the issues facing the country but also the nature of democracy itself.
Mr. Trump has systematically sought to undercut some of the country’s foundational principles, eroding trust in an independent press and the judicial system and sowing doubts about free and fair elections. He has refused to accept his loss four years ago, falsely claiming to this day that a second term was stolen from him in 2020. Instead of hindering his rise, his denial took hold across a Republican Party he remade.
Now, Mr. Trump has vowed a radical reshaping of American government, animated by his promises of “retribution” and of rooting out domestic opponents he casts as “the enemy within.” He has pledged to oversee the biggest wave of deportations in U.S. history, suggested deploying troops domestically, proposed sweeping tariffs and largely advocated the greatest consolidation of power in the history of the American presidency.
Pointing to the mob of Trump supporters who sacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, violently trying to prevent the certification of his defeat, Ms. Harris’s campaign loudly cautioned that Mr. Trump in a second term would be “unhinged, unstable and unchecked.” But voters heeded neither her warnings nor those of some of the most senior former Trump administration officials and military advisers who testified to his autocratic instincts.
After nearly a decade as the dominant face of the Republican Party, Mr. Trump and his blunt-force approach to politics seemed to lose their shock value. Instead, for millions of disillusioned Americans mistrustful of institutions and of a political system that they felt had failed them, his agent-of-chaos persona became an asset.
Mr. Trump’s campaign had aimed to put together a new political coalition anchored not just by blue-collar white voters but working-class Black and Latino voters, as well. By Wednesday morning, there were some early signs the campaign had succeeded.
The 2024 election is the second time Mr. Trump has defeated a woman trying to break through the nation’s highest gender barrier — the presidency — after he prevailed over Hillary Clinton eight years ago. His history of sexual misconduct, along with his three appointees to the Supreme Court and their role in ending the constitutional right to an abortion in 2022, transformed the race into a referendum on gender and women’s rights.
But abortion may not have been as salient an issue as it was in the 2022 midterm elections. Florida on Tuesday became the first state since Roe v. Wade was overturned to reject an abortion-rights ballot measure.
Polls heading into the election showed a country divided at historic levels along gender lines. Men, including many younger male voters, powered Mr. Trump’s popularity, as women were at the heart of Ms. Harris’s coalition.
It was also the first election in which a major candidate was a felon. Yet the specifics of Mr. Trump’s crimes were rarely broached by Ms. Harris, who instead tried to focus on kitchen-table issues.
In May, in a criminal case brought by the Manhattan district attorney, Mr. Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts for covering up hush-money payments made to a porn star during the 2016 race. In a sign of the extraordinary circumstances facing him, Mr. Trump awaits sentencing tentatively scheduled for later this month, just as he will be ramping up the presidential transition process.
The race featured more than $1 billion in television advertising alone, as Ms. Harris, 60, offered herself as the vanguard of a new generation of leadership focused on the middle class, rolling out a series of policy plans to tackle grocery prices, housing costs, child care and elder care. She flipped her position on the border, promising a crackdown after arguing when she ran for president in 2019 that it should not be a crime to enter the United States without authorization.
Mr. Trump cast her as responsible for many of the country’s problems, countering with an array of sloganeering tax cuts: no tax on tips, no tax on Social Security, no tax on overtime, among them. He denigrated her as a “stupid person,” and called her “failed” and “dangerously liberal.”
Ms. Harris called for turning the page on the divisive Trump era. “We are not going back,” she said, and crowds chanted the line back. But she could never fully wrest the mantle of change away from Mr. Trump, given her perch as the current president’s second-in-command.
The Biden administration may have accelerated the country’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic, engineered a softer landing than most economists expected and passed a raft of sweeping legislation tackling manufacturing, climate change and infrastructure. But rising food and housing prices caused a painful economic pinch that packed a political punch.
Mr. Trump also promised to disentangle the country from conflicts abroad, a turn toward isolationism that found a fresh audience with a war raging in Europe between Russia and Ukraine for nearly three years, and with the Middle East on the precipice of a wider conflagration. His election raises questions about the future of N.A.T.O. and the American backing of Ukraine; Mr. Trump has long spoken glowingly about President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.
Seeking to blunt the political backlash faced by his party since the Supreme Court overturned Roe, the landmark decision guaranteeing a federal right to an abortion, Mr. Trump adopted a stance of leaving abortion rights to the states.
Mr. Trump formally declared his candidacy nearly two years ago, just days after the 2022 midterm elections. The reality, though, is that he barely stopped running after losing the 2020 election.
He withstood a ban by social media companies after the violence of Jan. 6, corporate donor boycotts, a $454 million civil fraud judgment against him in New York and multiple indictments, including one for a conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Mr. Trump crushed his Republican rivals into submission. In the 2022 congressional primaries, he unseated eight of the 10 Republican lawmakers who had voted for his second impeachment. Then he swept through the 2024 presidential primaries, winning every state but one after refusing to debate his opponents.
His supporters rallied behind him as a candidate of destiny even before a would-be assassin’s bullet grazed his ear in July, at a rally in Butler, Pa., days before the Republican National Convention. “Fight, fight, fight,” he shouted as he pumped his fist in the air and blood dripped down his face.
Eight days later, Mr. Biden, isolated at his Delaware home after testing positive for Covid, withdrew from the race. Ms. Harris’s entry unleashed a burst of money and momentum. The Democratic Party quickly consolidated behind her as she closed the polling gap with Mr. Trump. In September, she outmaneuvered and baited himat their only debate.
But Mr. Trump’s enduring appeal helped him navigate a bitter final phase that included his former White House chief of staff saying that Mr. Trump met the definition of a “fascist.”
The label did not stick for many voters. Instead, come January, he will again take office as commander in chief.

Chandler AZ Roof Repair: Protecting Your Home in the Desert Sun

Sun, Heat, and Your Roof: Chandler's climate is characterized by intense sunlight and high temperatures, making roofs susceptible to sun damage and deterioration. Regular inspections are vital to assess the impact of the sun and address any resulting damage promptly.
Early Intervention for Longevity: Proactive homeowners understand the value of early intervention when it comes to roof repairs. Chandler's climate can exacerbate issues, making it crucial to catch problems like leaks, damaged flashing, or missing shingles before they escalate. Regular inspections, at least once a year, can help identify and address these concerns in their early stages.

Quality Materials for Lasting Results: The use of high-quality materials is paramount in ensuring the longevity of roof repairs. Chandler's homeowners should choose a roofing service committed to using durable and weather-resistant materials. Quality craftsmanship combined with top-notch materials provides lasting results, protecting your investment for years to come.
Energy-Efficient Roofing Solutions: With the desert sun beating down, energy efficiency is a consideration for savvy homeowners. Explore energy-efficient roofing solutions, such as reflective materials or cool roofing systems, which can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce energy consumption.
Emergency Roof Repair Services: Arizona weather can be unpredictable, and emergencies may arise when you least expect them. A reliable roof repair service in Chandler should offer emergency response capabilities, ready to address sudden issues like leaks or storm damage promptly.
Conclusion: Your home in Chandler deserves the best protection, and that starts with a robust and well-maintained roof. Despite a coaching switch, the Colorado Buffaloes couldn't find success in their 26-19 loss to No. 16 Oregon State. The team struggled both on the ground and through the air, punting frequently and struggling to gain yardage. The offensive play-calling duties were handed over to Pat Shurmur, but there was little improvement in the team's performance. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders faced constant pressure from Oregon State defenders and completed mostly short passes. The Buffaloes only managed 238 total yards, with negative yardage on the ground. Oregon State effectively sealed the game with a touchdown late in the second quarter after a missed opportunity for Colorado to close the gap before halftime. Despite their efforts, Colorado was unable to regain possession of the ball and fell short of tying or taking the lead. With this loss, Colorado's chances of making it to a bowl game are slim as they need two wins out of their remaining three games against tough opponents like Arizona, Washington State, and Utah. On the other hand, Oregon State remains strong with a 7-2 record overall and is still in contention within Pac-12 with upcoming games against No. 5 Washington and No. 8 Oregon in their final weeks of play.
