The Knight Before Christmas (2019)
Netflix's newest original Christmas movie is about a medieval knight who time travels to fall in love with a teacher. I'm not kidding. And while I'm a sucker for any cheesy Christmas movie, I have some THOUGHTS about this one.
Our story is the Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens) is a teacher in Ohio. She is bitter from a recent break up due to infidelity. Now I believe that cheating is never ok, but I kind of wanted to hear James's side a little bit here. Or maybe he could have weighed in once the knight joins us. Brooke is also very close to her sister Madison (Emmanuelle Chriqui) and niece Claire (Isabelle Franca). I found it weird that Madison's husband Evan (Scott Ryan Yamamura) wasn't mentioned before he showed up like an hour in. Or maybe he was but I didn't catch that he was her husband.
Jumping back to 1344, Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse) is out hunting when he meets an Old Crone (Ella Kenion). She sends him to 2019 at the Christmas Castle in Bracebridge, Ohio. Shocking, I know. Now, everybody focuses on the fact that time travel is impossible, but I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on that and say that this witch can really do it. I think she convinced him that it was his quest in order to get him out of the way for her plans. Like some Morgana type shit. Proof is in the credit scene where she does the same thing to his younger brother.
In Ohio, Brooke decides to take in Cole until he "recovers from his head trauma." I am NOT willing to suspend my disbelief on this one. I know that she feels guilty for hitting him with her "steel steed," but most people would pay for a hotel room or something. Especially since she's living very well for a teacher in the house she inherited. There are men who are hot enough that if I were single, I'd let them move into my guest house indefinitely. Cole is not one of them. Brooke is way out of his league, but for some reason her sister low key hits on Cole and her neighbor high key wants to bone Cole. WHY.
The last storyline that I was confused by was the one with David (Jean-Michel Le Gal). He's a widower and single father of 4, but Brooke's interactions with him seem flirty? Like I thought there was going to be some sort of love triangle. No. David is just the dude that everyone feels sorry for. But Cole does get better as the movie goes on. He's very sweet and sincere. He even saves Claire from falling through the ice on the lake. Which I really wish someone could explain to me how people accidentally end up in the middle of a frozen lake. My favorite part was Christmas Eve. Before the feast,Brooke recreates Christmas for Cole, and he gets super sentimental. I teared up right along with him. Then at the Christmas Eve Feast, there's this whole mistletoe thing because Cole doesn't know the tradition. It's very cute.
I love Vanessa Hudgens. I love cheesy romances. I was smiling like an idiot at the end, but I just had so many questions.
Overall, I give it 2 stars.
