Transcriptomics Reveals Tumorigenesis and Pathogen Response in Scombrid Puffy Snout Syndrome
Scombrids represent some of the most economically important fisheries globally. However, increased interest in creating aquaculture systems for these fish has increased the risk of disease emergence. One such disease, Puffy Snout Syndrome (PSS), causes collagenous tissue growths on the face, in numerous scombrid taxa. PSS has only been documented in captive-held fish populations and can lead to high mortality rates. Despite this, little is known about PSS's causative agent(s) and the immune response they elicit. Therefore, we leveraged metatranscriptomic data of symptomatic-captive, asymptomatic-captive, and healthy-wild Pacific Mackerel (Scomber japonicus) to evaluate the physiological characteristics of PSS infections and identify a mechanism of disease. PSS symptomatic-captive and asymptomatic-captive mackerel showed distinct gene expression patterns from their wild counterparts. Genes involved in tumorigenesis, immune response, and pathophysiology were over-expressed in captive-held fish. In particular, the Wnt9 pathway was increased by more than 2 orders of magnitude in captive fish, potentially representing a diagnostic feature of this disease. Together, these host physiological data and our past visual identification of RNA virus-like particles in afflicted tissues suggest that viral-mediated oncogenesis may be driving PSS in captive mackerel. http://dlvr.it/SrJ0Hz

Kefal – Mugilidae Ailesi
Kefal aslında 100’e yakın balık türünün ortak adıdır. Denizlerimizde 6 türü yaşıyor: Has kefal, altınbaş kefal, dudaklı kefal, mavri kefal, sivriburun kefal, rus kefali. Küçüğüne ilerya denir. En lezzetlisi has kefal ve altınbaş kefaldir. Nisan, Mayıs, kış ayları kefalin lezzetli olduğu dönemlerdir.

Uskumruya benzer, ama aralarında belirgin farklar vardır. Kolyozun gözleri daha iridir. Kolyozun ağzı geriye doğru daha uzundur, uskumruya göre ağız yapısı daha kısadır. Uskumrunun yüzme kesesi çok küçüktür, kolyozun yüzme kesesi belirgin derecede büyüktür. Kolyoz daha yuvarlaktır, uskumru daha yassıdır. Kolyozun yanlarda sarımsı lekeler vardır, uskumrunun ise pembe gibidir. Uskumrunun sırt çizgileri aşağıya doğru oldukça düzgün paralel iner, kolyozda bu düzen yoktur, desenler daha karışıktır. Ama en önemlisi uskumru daha lezzetlidir. Ortalama uzunluğu 15- 30 cm, hatta 50 cm’ye kadar varabilir. Türkiye’de tüm denizlerde bulunur. Ocak ayı en yağlı zamanıdır.

Those gifs are wholly mackerel!
Pacific mackerel (Scomber japonicus) are dazzling denizens of the California coast. Migrating to colder waters off of Washington in the summer and down to warmer Baja California in the winter, plentiful parties of these planktivorous pisces are commonly spotted south of Point Conception, where they make a meal of drifting morsels while dodging hungry hordes of seabirds, seals and tuna.

(This latter predator must add some insult to injury in the fray, as Pacific mackerel are scombrids and close cousins to their larger, faster tunid terrors.)

Pacific mackerel were once a staple in the Cannery Row days, and today are a responsibly managed, sustainable fishery along the West Coast.

A final fun fact: Schooling fishes of different species tend to group together based on size—every now and again there will be a standout jack mackerel Trachurus symmetricus in our exhibit lacking the distinctive green-gray-blue backs of the Pacific mackerel. We don’t give names to the fishes but if you find a sly horse mackerel feel free to call it ‘Waldo’!
