Attorney General James Urges U.S. Senate to Confirm Adeel Mangi to Federal Appeals Bench!
AG James and Coalition of Attorneys General Call for Senate Confirmation of Mangi, Who Would Be First Muslim Judge on Federal Appeals Court
— April 20, 2024
Adeel Abudllah Mangi appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Born: 1977 (Age 46–47) Karachi, Pakistan. Education: Pembroke College, Oxford (BA), City Law School (PGDip), Harvard University (LLM). Adeel Abdullah Mangi is a Pakistani-American lawyer who was nominated to serve as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit by President Joe Biden in November 2023. If confirmed, Mangi would be the first Muslim American to serve on a federal appeals court and the third Muslim-American federal judge overall.
NEW YORK — New York Attorney General Letitia James and a coalition of 11 attorneys general today urged the U.S. Senate to confirm President Biden’s judicial nominee Adeel Mangi to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mangi has broad support from legal and law enforcement communities and has decades of experience as a litigator, earning him the highest rating for a judicial nominee by the American Bar Association for his integrity, judicial temperament, and competence. If confirmed, Mangi would be the first Muslim American to sit on a federal appeals court.
“Adeel Mangi is an experienced litigator, knowledgeable jurist, and strong defender of justice who would administer the rule of law equally and fairly,” said Attorney General James. “Attacks against Mangi to derail his nomination have been Islamophobic, offensive, and misguided. Our justice system should reflect the rich diversity of our nation. I am proud to stand with my colleagues today to denounce the hateful attacks against Mangi’s nomination and to call for his confirmation.”
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Attorney General James and the coalition note that despite Mangi’s many qualifications, he is currently subject to an orchestrated campaign of anti-Muslim bias that includes dangerous claims that he is antisemitic and anti-law enforcement. The letter argues that at a time of rising hate against Muslim Americans, unfounded attacks such as those against Mangi are unacceptable and should be rejected outright.
Attorney General James and the coalition conclude their letter to Senate leadership by writing that Mangi possesses the fair-mindedness, commitment to equal justice for all, and temperament befitting of a federal judge. They urge senators to be on the right side of history.
Joining Attorney General James in sending today’s letter are the attorneys general of Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and the District of Columbia.
— Letitia James, New York State Attorney General

My Why is Love
Just was watching a Simon Sinek video. I don't follow him but I know folks who do. He was talking about finding your why. My why is love.
My grandmother told me when I was young that I was put on this world to love people. And I took that very seriously. I've approached people with love my whole life.
All kinds of love. I've never met a form of love I didn't like. But in it's broadest form - Greek agape explains my general state of mind most of the time.
I recently had the pleasure to co-write an article about love in organizing for the International Humanistic Management Association. One of my cowriters was Renato Ruffini at the university of Milan. He is brilliant and knows a lot about love and I could listen to him all day expound on the various types of love.
I think the reason I've been recruited into leadership positions most of my life (starting in high school), is because I do live love. I am agapic in almost all my interactions - even with people who annoy me. lol. I think this is why I keep being asked to lead others. I have never actually sought out leadership positions, I've been asked to join and lead.
I was giving a talk today to some business students at a university in Karachi Pakistan. I spoke about what makes someone a leader vs a boss or manager. And that is - a leader is someone people want to voluntarily follow. People follow a leader - because they trust them.
So what is it about me that people trust? I am convinced it is because I love. I lead with love. When I have a problem I remind myself to consider love in my solution. Fraternal, eros, compassion and agape. And I think people sense this is me and it's why I get chosen to lead.
My why - is love.

We live in a society, where we waste half of our time in comparison and rest in jealousy. As a result, we forget to focus on OURSELF. I also used to do these things, but believe me, it gives only negative vibes, which you willingly or unwillingly multiply into others. The day I left these all, I found an unbelievable change in Myself. My friends who used to say Why you take everything so negative. Now they say, We are getting positive vibes from you, boosted the confidence, true motivation and so on. These all could be possible because I believed in ME, changed myself and left all the gathering from where I used to get negative vibes.
Let me share how grateful this year was…
First month of the year
The first month of the year which starts with New Year celebrations and my birthday celebration on 6th January. In this month, I got a chance to visit and meet many high profiles of Pakistan. I participated into Ambassador Program of my university, and after clearing all stages, I was one of the Ambassador amongst 125 others for the year 2016-17. Well due to some financial issues I couldn’t take part in any national or international trip but then in 2018, I got a chance to visit Islamabad. It was 10 days trip, which included visits of President House, Prime Minister Secretariat, GHQ, NAB Headquarter and Supreme Court of Pakistan amongst many others. So that’s how my year 2018 officially kicked off.
Feb to May
From Feb to May, I became busy in working on thesis. I chose “Impact of Facebook on University Students in Karachi” as my research topic. And finally, in May, I accomplished it after clearing all the levels from beginning to end. After passing viva and submitting thesis to the university, I was unofficially graduated.
June & July
June and July known for vacations, so I did many hangouts with friends, and also helped my mates for their thesis film. Even I worked as a supporting role in one of the film. In the same month, I went into trauma because my cellphone got snatched. It might seem nothing for Karachites but as it happened for the very first time in the last ten years. So, I went into deep depression and lost 10 KG of my weight. Well, with friends and family support I overcome it soon.
Vlogging in August
Then in August, I officially entered into the field of vlogging and decided to travel outside Karachi. So, with the group of friends, I planned a trip for Mithi. It was a 3 days trip where we went to Mithi, Tharparker and from there we explored the architecture site of Jainism temples and went to mountain area of Nagar Parker. Only few of us could climb the mountain and I was one of them. The view from the 600 ft. of mountain was so breathtaking.
In the same month, I planned for another trip. This time it was Balochistan. Even a month isn’t enough to explore the whole Balochistan but I tried my best to promote the positive image of Balochistan. In this trip, we first went to Lasbela, Balochistan and from there we went to Hingol National Park, Nani Mandir and Kund Malir. We returned back to Lasbela to explore the agricultural site and natural picnic spot of Lasbela.

A Trip To Balochistan
September & October
September and October were bit busiest, I participated in seminars, workshops, and meetings with different clients. After taking two short courses, I appeared and cleared test of Basics of Reporting & Basics of Editing conducted by CEJ in collaboration with British High Commission. After this, I participated in the IMPACT program of School of Leadership (SOL), which changed the entire perspective of my life. I felt so positive and boosted after this 4 days program of SOL. As I love to do socializing, so I got new many friends from CEJ and SOL.
November – The Convocation Month
Well, it’s time for November. I’d love to call it Convocation Month. Yes, it was 17th November when I officially graduated and made my family proud.
After graduation, I got a chance of picnic at Turtle beach and French beach. So, on 24th November I went to Turtle Beach to be a part of MAX program by SOL, where Umair Jaliawala and Waqar Ali interacted with the participants and engaged them into different activities. So, they can stretch themselves and come out from their comfort zone. On 27th Nov, again got a chance to visit a beach, but this time it was beyond. This time we did underwater diving, snorkelling and saw the marine life with our dive masks at French beach in Karachi. In the same month, I became the Global Peace Ambassador from Pakistan for the next two years.
Last month December
December, last month of the year. In this month I got a laptop from university and planned for the last trip of 2018. This time it was Ber Sharif village, which is approximately 35 KM away from Larkana.
Travelling is now the part of blood and would love to continue this even in next year (InnShahAllah). So, the year started with travelling and is going to end on the travelling. That’s the beauty of 2018.
Last but not least, if you have a will to do something, you can definitely do it. No one can stop you doing this. Keep following your passion, be down to earth, socialize with others and learn new things from people’s experience.
Goodbye 2018, and excited to welcome 2019 with more positive energy. And looking forward to many new, exciting and adventurous things. I also would like to share an idea for 2019,
Start your year with an empty jar and fill it with notes of good things that happened to you.
Wish you a Happy New Year!

CELEBRATIONS OF EID-E-MILAD UN NABI AT HOPE
Streets across Pakistan turned festive as the faithful celebrated Eid-e-MiladunNabi, the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with religious zeal and fervor.
The 12th Rabi-ul-Awal marks the birth of the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him).
Government buildings, streets, houses, shopping malls, and mosques were decorated beautifully with lights and buntings, as the youth and children did fireworks and marched in rallies wearing colorful dresses. Despite the standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the government for Eid-e-MiladunNabicelebrations, adherence to social distancing and mask-wearing instructions was almost non-existent.

Biden’s Afghan Pullout Is a Victory for Pakistan. But at What Cost?
Pakistan’s military stayed allied to both the Americans and Taliban. But now the country may face intensified extremism at home as a result of a perceived Taliban victory.

Near the peak of the American war in Afghanistan, a former chief of neighboring Pakistan’s military intelligence — an institution allied both to the U.S. military and to its Taliban adversaries — appeared on a talk show called “Joke Night” in 2014. He put a bold prediction on the record.
“When history is written,” declared Gen. Hamid Gul, who led the feared spy service known as the I.S.I. during the last stretch of the Cold War in the 1980s, “it will be stated that the I.S.I. defeated the Soviet Union in Afghanistan with the help of America.”
“Then there will be another sentence,” General Gul added after a brief pause, delivering his punchline to loud applause. “The I.S.I., with the help of America, defeated America.”
In President Biden’s decision to withdraw all American forces from Afghanistan by September, Pakistan’s powerful military establishment finally gets its wish after decades of bloody intrigue: the exit of a disruptive superpower from a backyard where the I.S.I. had established strong influence through a friendly Taliban regime before the U.S. invaded in 2001.
A return of the Taliban to some form of power would dial the clock back to a time when Pakistan’s military played gatekeeper to Afghanistan, perpetually working to block the influence of its archenemy, India.
But the Pakistani military’s sheltering of the Taliban insurgency over the past two decades — doggedly pursuing a narrowly defined geopolitical victory next door — risks another wave of disruption at home. Pakistan is a fragile, nuclear-armed state already reeling from a crashed economy, waves of social unrest, agitation by oppressed minorities and a percolating Islamic militancy of its own that it is struggling to contain.
If Afghanistan descends into chaos, Pakistanis are bound to feel the burden again just as they did after Afghanistan disintegrated in the 1990s following the Soviet withdrawal. Millions of Afghan refugees crossed the porous border to seek relative safety in Pakistan’s cities and towns.

And more: A Taliban return to power, either through a civil war or through a peace deal that gives them a share of power, would embolden the extremist movements in Pakistan that share the same source of ideological mentorship in the thousands of religious seminaries spread across Pakistan. Those groups have shown no hesitation in antagonizing the country’s government.
While Pakistan’s military played a dangerous game of supporting militants abroad and containing extremists at home, the country’s Islamist movements found a rallying cause in the presence of an invading foreign force next door, openly fund-raising for and cheering on their Afghan classmates. New extremist groups kept shrinking the civil society space in Pakistan — often targeting intellectuals and professionals for abuse or attack — and even found sympathizers in the ranks of Pakistan’s security forces.
Pakistani generals have resorted to a mix of force and appeasement in tackling the country’s own growing militancy problem, said Dr. Ayesha Siddiqa, a research associate at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. But a strategy for countering the spread of extremism has been elusive.
“It scares me, it scares me,” Dr. Siddiqa said. “Once the Taliban come back, that should trouble the Pakistani government, or any government. It will be inspiring for all the other groups.”
Said Nazir, a retired brigadier and defense analyst in Islamabad, said Pakistan had “learned some lessons” from the blowback of past support to jihadist groups. The country would need to tread more cautiously in the endgame of the Afghan war.
“Victory will not be claimed by Pakistan, but tacitly the Taliban will owe it to Pakistan,” Mr. Nazir said. “Pakistan does fear the replay of past events and fears a bloody civil war and violence if hasty withdrawal and no political solution occur simultaneously.”
Seth Jones of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington said that although Pakistan’s military and intelligence establishment are “undoubtedly celebrating” the Biden announcement, greater control in Afghanistan is far from assured.
“It will be difficult, if not impossible, for Pakistan to control the Taliban and other militant groups in Afghanistan as the country spirals into a civil war,” he said. “Al Qaeda, the Islamic State, and other groups are already operating in Afghanistan. There is no way Pakistan can control this hodgepodge of groups, which have different interests, leaders, and goals.”

From the moment of its birth as a country in 1947, Pakistan found itself surrounded by enemies. The new borders drawn up by British officials instantly mired Pakistan in a host of territorial disputes, including a serious one with Afghanistan, which still lays claim to what most of the world sees as Pakistan’s northwestern regions.
It was at the peak of the Cold War in the 1970s, as the Soviet Union pushed to expand its influence in South and Central Asia, that Pakistani leaders found a formula of deploying Islamist proxies they have stuck to ever since. The United States armed and financed the training of the mujahedeen insurgency that would defeat the Soviet Army in Afghanistan and topple the government it propped up. Pakistan’s army, particularly its intelligence wing, would serve as the handler, host, and trainer.
Through the ensuing civil war in the 1990s, Pakistani generals helped a younger group of fundamentalist Afghan fighters known as the Taliban sweep the fighting factions and establish a government with control over more than 90 percent of Afghanistan.
But when the United States invaded in 2001 to chase Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda after their terrorist attacks on American soil, the Americans also turned their sights on Pakistan’s allies in Afghanistan, the ruling Taliban. Pakistan found itself in a difficult position. In the face of President George Bush’s “with us or against us” ultimatum, Pakistan’s military ruler, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, reluctantly went along.
The decision had an immediate blowback: Pakistan began facing attacks from the Pakistani Taliban for siding with the U.S. military campaign against their ideological brothers in Afghanistan. It took years of military operations that cost the lives of thousands of Pakistani forces, and displaced countless people in Pakistan’s northwest, to quell the group.

At the same time, Pakistan’s military kept working to help the Afghan Taliban regroup as an insurgency to keep the United States in check. Even as American officials relied on Pakistani help to conduct the war and intelligence operations, some were bitter about the double role played by the I.S.I. The killing of Bin Laden in Pakistan by U.S. forces in 2011 was one rare moment when those tensions played out in public.
But Pakistan’s generals were also successful in making themselves indispensable to the United States — offering a nuclear-armed ally in a region where China, Russia and Islamist militants all had interests. Effectively, it meant that the United States chose to turn a blind eye as its Pakistani allies helped the Taliban wear down American and allied forces in Afghanistan.
Afghan government officials, meanwhile, were becoming increasingly distraught that their American allies were not coming down harder on Pakistan.
On one trip to Afghanistan soon after being elected vice president in 2008, Mr. Biden was urged by President Hamid Karzai to pressure Pakistan into rooting out Taliban sanctuaries on its soil. Mr. Biden was reported to respond by saying that Pakistan was 50 times more important to the United States than Afghanistan was.
In recent years, as American officials sought a way to leave Afghanistan, they again had to turn to Pakistan — to pressure the Taliban to come to peace talks, and to lend help when the United States needed to move against Al Qaeda or the Islamic State affiliate in the region.
With the U.S. intention to leave publicly declared, Pakistan did away with any semblance of denial that the Taliban leadership was sheltering there. Taliban leaders flew from Pakistani cities to engage in peace talks in Qatar. When negotiations reached delicate moments that required consultations with field commanders, they flew back to Pakistan.
When the United States finally signed a withdrawal agreement with the Taliban in February last year, the mood in some circles in Pakistan was one of open celebration.

Pakistan’s former defense minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, who had repeatedly visited the halls of power in Washington as a U.S. ally, tweeted a photo of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meeting Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, the Taliban deputy at the talks in Qatar.
“You might have might on your side, but God is with us,” Mr. Asif said in the tweet, ending with a cry of victory. “Allah u Akbar!”
But there are signs that extremist groups within Pakistan have already felt emboldened by the Taliban’s perceived victory, giving a glimpse of the trouble likely to be in store for Pakistani officials.
The once-defeated Pakistani Taliban have increased their activities in tribal areas bordering Afghanistan. Ambushes against security forces have become more frequent.
Just how wide the problem of extremism might stretch has been on display in recent days on the streets of two of Pakistan’s main cities, Lahore and Karachi.
Supporters of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, a movement that sees itself as protecting Islam against blasphemy, thrashed uniformed members of Pakistani forces and took dozens hostage for hours. Videos emerged of Pakistani army officers trying to reason with the violent protesters. Officials said two policemen had been killed, and 300 wounded. The showdown continues, as the government moved to ban the group as a terrorist outfit.
“The state was not able to control the stick-wielding and stone-hurling members of the T.L.P. that paralyzed most parts of the country for two days,” said Afrasiab Khattak, a former chairman of Pakistan’s human rights commission. “How will they handle trained, guns-carrying Taliban militants?”

VIPs are the First Priority for Sindh Gov instead of Front Line Health Workers for Vaccination: Umar
As the first phase of inoculation of frontline healthcare workers against Covid-19 continues, Minister for Planning Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on Sunday alleged that the vaccine was being administered to VIPs in Sindh.
He claimed that in the Centre, the vaccine had not even been given to Prime Minister Imran Khan, federal ministers or their families.
In a tweet, Mr Umar said complaints had been received that people other than the healthcare workers were receiving the vaccine jabs in Karachi. As a result, representatives of the Sindh government were instructed during the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) meeting to vaccinate healthcare workers only.
He said the vaccine had been given to the provincial government and therefore should inoculate healthcare personnel.
According to media reports, NCOC National Coordinator Lt Gen Hamooduz Zaman Khan has been directed to investigate the matter.
The vaccination drive was launched by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Feb 2 in Islamabad, which started in the rest of the country the next day.
Pakistan performs better
With the country reporting another 1,346 infections and 53 deaths and the overall positivity rate of 3.64pc on Sunday, the global ranking of Pakistan in terms of most number of cases dropped to the 30th place.
In June last year, the country was among the top 10 countries having the most Covid-19 infections.
Pakistan’s ranking is much better than the United States (US), India, Russia, United Kingdom (UK), France, Turkey, Germany, South Africa, Iran, Indonesia, Canada, Israel, Iraq and Sweden.
According to data released by the NCOC on Sunday, total number of people having been infected by Covid-19 since Feb 26, 2020 was 554,474, with 11,967 dying. The rest of the infected people had recovered. There are 32,265 active cases at present, the data revealed.
Meanwhile, majority of the frontline healthcare workers in Islamabad seem to have adopted a ‘wait and see’ policy as only 34 health professionals have so far been vaccinated against Covid-19 since the drive was launched on Feb 2.
However, District Health Officer Dr Zaeem Zia hoped that a large number of healthcare workers would be inoculated on Monday (today) as around 300 appointments had been called for the day.
The global data showed that the US had reported the most number of cases – over 27 million – and around 473,000 deaths. India has recorded 10.8 million cases and 155,000 deaths, Brazil, 9.4 million cases and 231,000 deaths; UK, 3.9 million cases and 112,000 deaths; Turkey, 2.5 million cases and 26,000 deaths, and Iran, over 1.4 million cases and 55,000 deaths.
However, in the US, 970,567 tests per million population were carried out, whereas in the UK, 1.12 million tests were conducted. Russia carried out 712,464 tests, Turkey, 359,156; Brazil, 133,977; India, 144,560; Iran, 114,219 whereas Pakistan conducted only 36,664 tests per million population.
Novel coronavirus was first detected in China in December 2019 which then spread to other countries. Pakistan closed its borders and took a number of steps to stop the spread. The first case of the virus was reported in Pakistan in the last week of February 2020.
On March 13 of that year, the meeting of the National Security Committee, comprising top civil and military leadership, was held to discuss the crisis which was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.
Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had chaired the meeting, directed the relevant authorities to devise a comprehensive strategy to check the spread of the disease.
Lockdown was announced on March 16 and a number of industries, educational institutions, restaurants and marriage halls were closed. Pakistan also sealed its western border with Afghanistan and Iran and even closed Kartarpur shrine to local people.
The National Disaster Management Authority was involved to ensure availability of medical equipment and health-related supplies at the earliest.
After the construction industry was opened on Aug 7, the National Coordination Committee on Covid-19 lifted restrictions on tourism on Aug 8 and on restaurants and transport sector from Aug 10.
Educational institutions and marriage halls were opened on Sept 15, 2020.
After restrictions were eased, a large number of people thronged public spots without following the SOPs. As a result, tourist destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan had to be closed.
In October 2020, cases started to rise again and the NCOC officially declared it to be the second wave of the virus.
Initially educational institutions, from where cases were being reported, were closed and then a lockdown policy was announced for hotspots. As the situation worsened on Nov 11, the NCOC decided to increase restrictions, and finally closed educational institutions on Nov 26.
After the situation improved, secondary schools and colleges were opened on Jan 18, 2021 while and primary and middle institutions resumed from Feb 1.
