The definition of ableism according to Oxford Languages is discrimination in favor of able-bodied people. The word first appeared in 1981 in Mirriam Webster's dictionary, with similar wording, but wasn’t widely used until the 1990s.
Disabled people were first thought to be cursed by witches, possessed by demons, or punished by god because they or their parents had sinned. Sometime around the 16th century asylums for mentally “retarded” people opened and became popular. Patients were severely abused, in 1927 Virginia a law was passed that allowed sterilization of disabled people so that the disability would not be passed on. Electroshock therapy and ice baths were common, as well as almost always being restrained. Physically disabled people were grouped in housing with criminals and beggars, left to die of starvation with their inability to find work. During the 1980s the United States started shutting asylums down, and by 2015 no large ones remained.
Although asylums have been shut down in many places and people with disabilities are far more understood, ableism is still a large issue in society. Some people are unwilling to learn about disabilities, which carry on into their next of kin, while others purposely ignore or disregard the fact that someone is disabled. Finding a job can be challenging, as discrimination is still very common, and if someone is different it could lessen the chance of being hired. Other examples are not offering accommodations, such as lack of communication options for deaf or blind people, or refusal to assist students.
Many places are working to improve their accessibility, but there is still lots to be done. The United States has made it that you must include a ramp in any new building that has stairs to access it, the United Kingdoms offers money to make sure that they can afford what they need, including care for their disability, Germany has quickly made a name for itself as one of the most (physically) disabled friendly places.

Art is conceived with images trapped in the mind, words wandering the soul, longing to share their existence and find a home on paper. Finding inspiration in every corner of the world, in abandoned buildings, and in collections of other's creativity is where it burrows into your ribcage and tippy-taps its way into your heart.
Art is summoned with the setting of the sun and the rising of the moon. Artemis gifts light that gleams off the paper resting on wood, the graphite dancing across it, the hands moving without full thought. The awareness that exhaustion will come the next day, but inspiration is there, motivation so rarely found flows easily in the dark, and the war between sleep and creativity consumes the night.
Art’s heart lies within the ability to create pictures for a beloved story and weave stories from art that brings inspiration, allowing others to see into the creator’s mind and heart. Lines that intertwine and letters that mean nothing on their own show a complex story and consuming emotions for the begetter as well as the spectator. The finished pieces look so different, yet they are much of the same; a part of one’s soul that they draw out of themselves with the sharpened tip of a pencil, letting it appear on paper for anyone who knows where to look.

Mr. Weasley! Mr. Weasley! Can you please spare a moment for me? I am here, Representing the Hogwarts Newspaper. I’ve been asked to speak to adults who had graduated from Hogwarts, to ask them how their school experience has effected their adult life style. I figured you would be the best man to ask, given the infamous Umbridge Uprising. Care to spare a few moments for me? Smile for the camera! Stunning, Sir, stunning! Oh Lottie is going to love this! Let’s start from the top, Sir. Thank you so very very much! Let’s see let’s see. Ah yes! From the beginning, right here. Mr. Weasley, what was the moment you knew that you would one day run this shop? With Fred, of course. Do you mind speaking on his behalf? It’s only fair he is interviewed all the same. Why are you surprised? Just because he isn’t part of the living, doesn’t mean he isn’t still part of our lives. He matters just as much as you. Oh, here. A handkerchief for you. There you go. Ready? Wonderful! Let’s start!

“If you don’t like the media, be the media…” SONG OF THE WEEK “Journalistic Girl”—This Kinks-influenced power pop tune is Part 2 of a song trilogy:
>Part 1: A teenaged female reporter collects guitar picks from her favorite bands while obsessively covering the music scene for the school paper. Meanwhile, her devoted boyfriend takes second place to her fanaticism.
>Part 2 (this song): Years pass. She is now a successful globe-trotting star journalist. Her high school sweetheart has grown up with her, but their relationship has not grown with time. This saddens him but she’s too preoccupied to see it.
>Part 3: She’s gone missing in a remote African war zone, and he takes it upon himself to brave the outback and find out what happened to her. A perilous mystery awaits…

bring back zooterkins, the best 17th-century swear word
I don't normally do Just Characters Swearing, but. ...this kind of wrote itself and then wouldn't leave my head. it comes from both a piece of character-writing advice that has always stuck with me, and also my conviction that Leona is 1000% funnier as a character if his dialogue has to stay G-rated. let Kalim say fuck, but don't let Leona say bastard.
(I'm sorry)

Add on to Mr. Gaiman's comment Most teachers / professors / grad TAs don't even know its the "bad version", and if they do, they just want to finish grading. I have submitted many a "bad versions", and passed. Back in the day I would word dump all my thoughts and points on loose leaf paper, cut them out and just line them up like poetry magnets on the floor and then just copy that on a fresh sheet and hand that in. In hindsight it took longer than necessary....but it relieved the stress of being coherent, for the first round then I could focus my attention in the arranging it into something kind of coherent, the second round. Technique also works on word processing programs. Just type a thought per line. Once you got them lined up, fill the space in with other stuff. Check your spelling and grammar, and you're done. Not every paper needs to be perfect, the most important thing teachers look for is proof you understand the material, even if its kinda sorta and that you can mildly communicating that consumed/studied.
Hya Neil!
I've been stressing over a task for school, and have had 3(?) panic attacks about it now.. It's due for tomorrow, and i literally cannot start. What's your advice for if something like that happens again?(because i know it will)
I've also had writer's block for almost half a year now. I have enough ideas, they just burrow themselves in my head and refuse to get onto paper.
I know most likely you can't help with this, but you always have an answer, or at least that's how it feels.
Have a nice day!
Write "the bad version". Know it's "the bad version" going into it. Its only purpose is to let you make a marks on some paper and start, and fool your brain into thinking that it doesn't matter.

Kiss kiss fall in love! (With Haruhi Fujioka)
Papercraft Haruhi! I really wanted to use roses somewhere, but actually don't have that many rose-patterned papers, and (I thought) none in quite the right colors. But then I remembered I had a brown rose-patterned paper stashed away from a few years back! How serendipitous.
