the skull (der Schädel) is a thematically important motif on my blog representing disillusionment with societal ideas of romance. while other posters online will utilize the skull to represent concepts of death, hauntings, the overall presence of halloween, absurdity, or merely to establish a gothic sensibility, der Schädel was born from a circle of mostly arospec mutuals expressing their desire to see princess tutu (2002) deconstruct its prioritization of romance. despite the text of these tumblr posts being written in english, der Schädel is referred to in german as a nod to the fact that princess tutu's episodes are also titled in german. der Schädel is often expressed as a specific gif of a rotating skull (as seen above) but any instance of posting about "the skull" on these users' blogs likely is used to reference this motif.
