🦈Shark Of The Week!🦈
today's shark of the week is,,
the scalloped hammerhead shark! (sphyrna lewini)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yes there's more than one kind of hammerhead shark, and yes, theres a way to tell the difference!
Physical Attributes:
male scalloped hammerhead sharks are around 4.9 - 5.9 ft (1.5 - 1.8m) and females around 8 ft (2.4m)
they weigh on average around 64 lbs (29kg) for the males and 80 lbs (36kg) for the females
they can be identified from other hammerhead sharks through the ridges on their head!
they have large litters of pups, ranging from 12 to 41 pups! their average lifespan is around 20-30 years, although its assumed this can go even higher up to 35 years with the right circumstances they have the ability to detect electrical fields using an specialized sensory organ called the ampullae of lorenzini!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Personality:
scalloped hammerhead sharks are fairly social creatures, engaging in a behavior called schooling where they gather in large groups
sometimes these schools can have up to hundreds of sharks in them!
younger sharks tend to school closer to the surface meanwhile older sharks will gather in schools much deeper than younger ones do
there are notable hierarchies in scalloped hammerhead shark schools that are generally settled through displays of dominance
younger scalloped hammerhead sharks have shown playful behavior amongst each other when in these schools they are generally considered non aggressive to humans, although you should always be cautious around any kind of shark
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Diet and Hunting:
famous for their strangely shaped heads, this actually serves a key purpose in how hammerhead sharks as a whole hunt!
they've been seen using their head to pin down certain types of prey (stingrays mostly) and the shape alongside their sensory cells aids them in successfully spotting and catching prey
scalloped hammerhead sharks have fairly diverse diets as they are opportunistic predators, often going for whatever is in the area, although generally their diet consists of things like squid, octopus, mackerel, sardines and herrings. larger scalloped hammerhead sharks have even been known to hunt smaller kinds of shark, such as the blacktip reef shark!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other Facts:
the hammer shape of their head is also known as their cephalofoil! which is the term for how the head extends out, it aids them not just in their hunting but gives them improved depth perception, a wider scope of vision and might mean they have a larger number of electroreceptors than other sharks
despite their improved vision from their headshape, it also means they cant see what is directly in front of them!
during the daytime they're found closer to shore meanwhile at night they travel further out into deeper waters, presumably for hunting
they are considered to be critically endangered due to severe overfishing, their schooling behavior unfortunately aids fishers in hunting the scalloped hammerhead shark and endangering the species as a whole its believed they (as well as all hammerhead sharks) have an immunity or tolerance towards the barbs a stingray has like many other kinds of sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks have been seen to have a high loyalty to their natal site

This school of scalloped hammerheads was not a sight we expected to see, but what a sight it was! Experts are actually unsure why scalloped hammerheads school, but some theorize they school this way as juveniles, and continue the behavior into young adulthood!

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
You wouldn't think fish need to hold their breath, but that's exactly what hammerhead sharks do when they hunt! Scallopped hammerheads cruise near the surface, where the water is about 15-20°C (59-68°F), but they hunt in much deeper water where the average temperature is about 5–11°C (41-51°F). To conserve their body heat, hammerhead sharks close their gills-- effectively holding their breath for up to 7 minutes before they ascend back to warmer waters.

By holding their breath, scalloped hammerhead sharks may be able to regulate their body temperature when diving thousands of feet below surface waters.

Been watching a lot of shark documentaries lately, which made me want to sketch some endangered shark species. My bic pen wasn't the most cooperative thing during these sketches; i think it's because it's well over 10 years old lol. I've got some new ones coming, though, because I've been enjoying sketching in the ballpoint.

-- "Two distinct population segments of the Scalloped Hammerhead Shark are listed as endangered and two are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). NOAA Fisheries is committed to conserving and protecting scalloped hammerhead sharks."
-- "Great White Sharks are decreasing in numbers and are rare due to years of being hunted by man for fins and teeth, and often as a trophy for sport fishing. The white shark is often caught as bycatch by commercial fisheries and can also become entangled in meshes that protect beaches."

The scalloped hammerhead also known as the bronze, kinky-headed, or southern hammerhead is a species of hammerhead shark in the family Sphyrnidae, which is native to temperature a tropical waters around the globe between latitudes 46°N and 36°S. They tend to inhabit coast lines, bays, mangrove swamps, and continental and insular shelves, from the surface to 1,600ft (500m) deep. They are a moderately social species which lives in pairs or shivers upwards of a hundred strong, typically spending there days close to shore and venturing further out to sea come night fall to hunt prey such as schooling boney fish, squid, octopi, rays, and smaller species of shark such as the blacktip reef shark. Reaching up to 14ft (4.3m) and 335 (152.4kg) in weight, the scalloped hammerhead is easily distinguished from other hammerhead sharks by the central indentation on the anterior margin of the head. There are also two indentations on either side of the central indentation, which gives the "scalloped" look. They have a very large first dorsal fin that is slightly hooked and a smaller second dorsal fin Scalloped hammerhead sharks are typically uniform grey, grayish brown, bronze, or olive with a white underside for countershading. The scalloped hammerhead is also noted for its large and complex brain, with high levels of cognitive capabilities and social intelligence. Mating occurs year round and after a 12 month pregnancy a mother scalloped hammerhead will migrate into shallow coastal bays and mangrove swamps to give birth to 12-41 live pups. Female scalloped hammerheads reach sexual maturity at larger sizes than males. Under ideal conditions a scalloped hammerhead may live up to 30 years.

A scalloped hammerhead cruises past a school of steel pompano, endemic to islands in the eastern tropical Pacific. Fluctuations in water temperature increase the growth of barnacles on rocks and can also cause infections, visible as white patches on this shark.
