Audio Drama creating is so hard cos you write the script and it's AMAZING
then you record and go ew no, pls make this sound like a normal human
then you finish recording and it's AMAZING
and then you have to edit and hear it on loop for so long that you are forced to analyse every. single. way you said any word at any given time and you just go
...e w w w w w w w w pls I'm never opening my mouth again
and then apparently you publish the content you slaved over? but that sounds fake to me idk

Reflecting on Representation in Audio Drama (as a Creator)
It's a commonly sung praise of fiction podcasts that, because of the indie nature of the space, minority representation is much more commonplace, but I don't think I've heard much of what that looks like for creators on the other side, so I just want to talk about it a bit in regards to my personal experience, writing an upcoming audio drama and being physically disabled.
"Write what you know" is advice given far and wide, even beyond podcasting, so when working through the pre-canon impact the city collapse in SPACE SPECKS had on the population, a long-term injury seemed like a trail worth heading down. Thus one of the show's characters, Nora, was partially trapped underneath a collapsed wall after an explosion, with her partner forced to do a field amputation to get her to safety, and, in a broader sense, save her life.
As an amputee, just the idea of writing a character with an amputation was exciting — I've struggled to find any relatability to other amputees, in both fiction and in real life, due to the circumstances and type of amputation I had. Creating a character who's amputation was, like mine, traumatic, who struggles with phantom pain and her disability being minimized and not having a say in the medical decision, now having to relearn navigating the world with mobility aids has meant so much more to me than I ever expected it would.
We're both partial foot amputees (write what you know, right?) and for me, this came with a lot of strife that I'm now getting to explore through Nora. I didn't call myself an amputee for a very long time — I didn't think I "deserved" it, because you wouldn't ever be able to tell just by looking at me, because my healthcare team and my family told me I would be fine and would adapt to walking again and because, even in amputee spaces, I simply didn't have it as bad as others did, along with hundreds of other reasons.
In short, though, audio drama is allowing me to tell a story that I would otherwise probably continue to feel isolated within. Becoming an amputee was a huge shift in my life I've never shared with anyone, but now Nora's injury has the opportunity to help me and maybe help others feel seen and understood, (even if their circumstances may be different!) This is just an incredibly unique sort of catharsis I didn't expect to find in podcasting & I'm really grateful for the opportunities this space presents. :)
#THANK YOU AUDIO DRAMA I LOVE YOU#this might be incomprehensible BUT !!!! the self reflected in fiction is APPARENTLY more freeing than i realized. lol#i dont talk much about being an amputee but its kind of fundamental of How I Experience Being A Person now so. sharing that is. WOW.#space specks#audio drama#audio fiction#fiction podcast#amputee#finch chirps

Here are my completely honest thoughts on a bunch of audio dramas I've checked out. (Don't worry, nothing scathing, they're all reasonably good. But please proceed with caution, or don't proceed, if you're involved in creating any of these shows.)
In the order I first listened:
The Storage Papers: Nine episodes in. A little slow paced, but I've heard it picks up in the later seasons. My only real concern is that it seems like a lot of the horror revolves around "this thing looks sort of like a human but it's Wrong somehow. also it kills people (or cats)." I hope at some point we meet a creature that looks and acts as unsettling as the Grinner but is nice, or at least complicated.
The Cellar Letters: Seven episodes in. I LOVE it. I love the natural-feeling messiness of it, the way Nate and Steve talk in circles and go back and forth on what to believe. It's made me laugh out loud multiple times. I can't wait to learn more about that weird little room full of letters with that one random word written on the wall (I forget what).
400 Words a Horror: Three episodes in. I had to re-listen to the first episode because I hadn't been paying enough attention, but I think that particular episode rewards re-listening anyway. Also it is the only show on this list that genuinely frightens me so I have to pace myself. Very good.
Tin Can Audio Presents: Middle:Below: Two episodes in. I won't say I'm hooked, but I am somewhat interested. It's a lot more relaxing than the other podcasts on this list, so I keep thinking I'll save it for listening closer to bedtime, then not getting around to it.
The Grotto: Six episodes in. Very much enjoying. I was SO proud of myself for correctly guessing the twist in the second episode. I love the characters and am extremely intrigued by the mysteries. My only criticism is that the musical interludes drag on too long. And I'm saying that as a WOE.BEGONE fan.
Soul Operator: Three episodes in. It's good but there isn't any particular element that's drawing me in just yet. There's a lot I don't know about the world yet, though, so there is still plenty of time for me to fall in love with this show. (Irrelevant note: I always get "Smooth Operator" by Sade stuck in my head when I think about this show.)
Shadows at the Door: Listened to half of the first episode. It was somewhat interesting, but I decided I had higher priorities for my listening time than disconnected hour-long episodes that are only *somewhat* interesting.
Archive 81: Five episodes in. Quite possibly going to become a major obsession. It's got everything: playing with point of view; the Power of Storytelling but in a menacing way; vivid character voices; probably a cult. I particularly love the way conversations play out on this show--I don't know exactly how to explain it but there's a certain... friction that happens in real conversations but rarely in fictional ones outside cringe comedy. I don't usually enjoy that sort of thing when it's played for laughs, but for realism or suspense? I eat that up. It does make me a little tense so this is another show I pace myself with and I'm glad the episodes are short.
Alice Isn't Dead: Two episodes in. I'm not going to make it a priority--it's got a similar sort of surrealism to Night Vale, but with higher stakes and less humor, and I had enough trouble getting immersed in Night Vale. I could probably enjoy it if I gave it enough time, but for now I'd rather focus on *gestures at some of the shows above*
The Silt Verses: Listened to the first ten minutes of the first episode and got bored, which I think says as much about me as it does about the show. It does get off to a bit of a slow start and leaves more space between lines of dialogue than most of these shows do, but I could probably get into it with adequate time and sleep. Not prioritizing it, for similar reasons to Alice.
#audio drama#the storage papers#the cellar letters#400 words a horror#middle below#thegrottopod#soul operator#shadows at the door#archive 81#alice isn't dead#the silt verses#woe.begone#<-tagging because a lot of these shows are woe.begone-adjacent#media i'm gulping

tuesday!
hello again! another 2-weeker because I was in Washington (Da Capital) for a portion of last week for an academic conference and boy howdy did that sap my will to live/energy to post.
listening: I finished relistening to TANIS! season 5 felt completely unfamiliar so I either never actually listened to it or it was just that forgettable. which tbh, it was. very forgettable. definitely good background white noise but really nothing cooking in there. very clear to me that at the end there terry miles was way more interested in writing a book than an audio drama.
for the sake of completeness I also am relistening to the black tapes. definitely a more cohesive narrative happening there even though I know the "finale" is looming ahead. also has not generally aged super well, and some of the attempts at writing academic experts of things in make me laugh a lot, and the overlap in voice actors for side characters is also amusing. I think this universe of podcasts only work if TANIS is a fictional podcast in TBT and vice-versa but that's not news. also why did they make cuneiform on…parchment…as a plot point in s3…it's cuneiform…wouldn't it be on a slab of clay…anyways a reference to "current political discourse" in a s3 ep made me check the date and I didn't realize that this came out in 2020????? insane. way more recent than I thought (derogatory).
music-wise, saw Mahjong Crib live a few weeks ago at a local bar so I've been letting that run in the background. the bassist was incredibly high (as he should be) and very funny. the last song of the set he put the bass down and started going ham on cowbell. definitely in the family of freeform jazz which isn't normally my thing. still not sure this band is my thing, will probably not be purchasing this album for example.
reading: How Cheerleading Became So Acrobatic, Dangerous and Popular (David Gauvey Herbert): what it says on the tin. didn't realize how much of it came down to monopoly of an industry again. womp womp.
read these both on the plane back from the conference: By Proxy (Lise): mind the tags. really nailed a good dynamic between LWJ and JC imo. Wuxian The Ninth (spockandawe): was linked by the author in a server we're both in. the choice to just do the intro and finale is so incredibly valid. I should do that for my abhorsen/TLT crossover actually because I have the beginning done and definitely have a finale cooking in my head but writing all the bits in the middle seems exhausting and this has made it occur to me that I am allowed to just. skip all the shit in the middle. nothing is stopping me.
watching: fallow
playing: fallow
making: I have been speed knitting a pair of fingerless gloves for my mom! chose this pattern specifically to do them flat style because I was on the go and didn't want to think about using dpns, and I don't have the equipment for knitting in the round comfortably on that small of a scale.

finished carving the block for my holiday cards BUT printing them has proved. challenging. I have what turns out to be kinda shitty water-based ink that is a real pain in the ass to do more than one print at a time with because it dries so fast. it's also applying and printing extremely unevenly and patchy, and while I don't actually mind the texture that adds, the fact that I have to wash off my block & roller every 2-3 prints or so is really stymying my speed. I am abusing my boyfriend's amazon prime to get an oil-based printmaking ink shipped to me so I have put further printing on hold til today when that allegedly arrives. I miss living in closer proximity to a more professional art supply store :-( I've printed about 15 or 20 now and depending on how much nicer the ink looks I may restart lol… either way next year I think I will get thicker paper to mail postcard-style instead of in an envelope to save on postage and work? we'll see. I'm hand delivering around half of my cards over the course of the holidays as it is to make it simpler and cut back on the amount of envelopes and postage I'll need anyways so it's really not TOO bad…
I kind of want to carve a return label stamp as well but obviously the scale/detail of that is more challenging. the easier move is to order return label stickers obviously so maybe I will design some of those, not for this year at this time scale but y'know. I was thinking of putting up my holiday card designs on redbubble or etsy or whatever as well just for funsies.
eating: made deb smittenkitchen's lentil soup with sausage, chard and garlic! really good! my sausages are generic beef from the farmers market so I feel like I lost a little flavor in there by not using some sort of sweet or spicy sausage but it's still tasty and filling. according to comments it freezes very well so I made the full recipe and will be freezing about four servings. I am rich in frozen soups rn.
I was GOING to make her crispy cauliflower and cabbage salad as well but the half a head of cabbage I had in the fridge tragically finally went bad. so instead I did an improvization at her cauliflower with dates and pistachios salad. I did not have dates or pistachios, subbed in craisins and almond slivers, lmfao, but still tasty and has the same structure. I also got some salmon burgers from kroger that have TWENTY FIVE GRAMS of protein each and were very tasty.
misc: feeling very [horror movie scare chord] from networking at that conference. my advisor's previous student who I did not overlap with but am familiar because I have continued his work casually commented that he applied to over Four Hundred Jobs before getting the one he currently has that he. does not even like that much. (I think? unclear. he is kind of a hater at heart in the funniest possible way, bless him.) so I have the fear of god in me a little bit but it's Fine, I'm doing what I'm "supposed" to be doing that a lot of other people are not by doing extensive networking and looking for summer internships for what will hopefully be the last summer of my PhD program.
I gotta start thinking about my yearly roundup too!!! I did a bad job of keeping a spreadsheet this year for this to note everything down in an easy format so maybe I will do that in retrospect as a time-filling activity in the next few weeks…

The Sunnydale Herald Newsletter, Wednesday, July 3
SPIKE: Nasty sort of fellow. Lucky for you blighters I was here, eh? GILES: Yes, thank you. Although your heroism has been slightly muted by the fact that you were helping Adam to start a war that would kill us all. XANDER: You probably just saved us so we wouldn't stake you right here. SPIKE: Did it work? Well, then everything's all right. And we all get to be not staked through the heart. Good work, team.

On the Shoulders of Giants Audio RPG It is 1648. Much is happening in the Republic of Seven United Netherlands, as Spain has finally recognised its sovereignty. Yet throughout the province of Drenthe stand the silent sentinels of an ancient past: the Dolmen. These megalithic landmarks have endured as the world around them shifted and changed; a tangible mystery of humanity's earliest chapters. While most believe the Dolmen are remnants of the Flood or the work of the devil, one priest by the name of Johan Picardt has a theory of his own. A theory he would have confirmed, and he knows just the way to do that: with the aid of three witches. Join us as we explore the stories of these three women accused of witchcraft, who are given the chance to prove their innocence by assisting Picardt on his quest to learn the origin of the Dolmen. As they do so, they connect with a past self they had no idea about. https://audiofiction.co.uk/show.php?id=20240815-04 RSS: https://feeds.podcastics.com/podcastics/podcasts/rss/7526_b564c3b850c22722d69276d11bfb0b17.rss

A List of Podcasts You’ve Probably Haven’t Heard
FYes there are a million podcast rec lists out there already but here’s a list of podcasts that you’ve probably never heard of that truly do not get the attention they deserve.
Compelled Dual:
A 2 play co-DM’d DnD podcast following Leoril and Phirora Valcyne as they each try to inherit the throne from their dick father. The DMs Al and Barry are master story tellers who’s unconventional system works seamlessly with the story. It is a story of political intrigue, mystery, adventure, and finding the true meaning of family. It is also packed to the teeth with LGBT+ characters and if you’re like me and crave quality shows with good representation this is the show for you. If you like The Adventure Zone or Critical Role you will love this show. It is currently in it’s final season of their first campaign and it updates every Friday.
Supernatural Sexuality with Dr. Seabrooke
This show is a relationship advice radio show set in a fictional world where mystical creatures and monsters exist. The characters may be monsters but their problems have real world connotations to them and very usable advice to take to heart. This show is also sex worker positive! And shows said sex workers in healthy relationships and the advice they receive isn’t about telling them to stop being a sex worker! Regardless of your current relationship status there is likely something here you will be able to relate too. This show currently has 12 episodes and is currently on an extended hiatus. Also the content of the show can obviously go into NSFW territory and so use discretion.
Love and Luck
An audio drama between two men living in Melbourne, Australia falling in love and finding they’ve developed magical powers to change the mood and luck of those around them. This show also has the unique aspect of being told completely through the voice messages they leave for each other. I’ll be real with you. If you’re one of those people that likes those coffee shop/flower shop/tattoo shop AU fanfics, you’ll love this show. This show is just a warm cup of coffee on a rainy day levels of soothing. It does tackle homophobia and transphobic behavior including topics such as parents kicking their children out and queer bashing so use caution but those episodes are always prefaced with content warnings so take care. Each episode is very short with the longest episode topping out at about 15 minutes so it is easy to binge through the 101 episodes. It is currently also on hiatus due to COVID so no new episodes are currently forthcoming yet.
Light Hearts
Follow the optimistic Janine as she does her best to run a café that is unfortunately haunted. You’ll see as she does her best to not only cater to the needs of her customers, but her paranormal roommates with the help of the colorful friends she makes along the way. This show is just light hearted fun at its finest and is tragically short with only 4 full episodes and a few minisodes and is also on a COVID based hiatus. Still worth the listen in my opinion though!
The Two Princes
Follow Prince Rupert as he struggles through an enchanted forest to find a way to save his kingdom from its viney grasp. He will find not all is not as it seams as he encounters another Prince by the name of Amir who seams to know more about the forests origins and what must be done save both their kingdoms. A show of adventure, romance, and mystery that can’t be missed. The show reached its series finale in 2020 but with 3 seasons worth of content it will have plenty to keep you entertained for a while.
Caravan
Follow Samir who accidentally falls into a mysterious canyon while on a camping trip with his best friend. The canyon is filled with demons, vampires, ghosts, and all other forms of monsters all fighting for control. Listen along as Samir must join with the humans who have come to call this crazy place home to help him find his way back to his. The best way to describe this is a western meets fantasy in the best way possible. I will say this show gets into NSFW territory and just about every character has no problem talking about how DTF they are for monsters and does have an instant of in scene sex so be aware.
Foundation After Midnight Radio
This is a radio show set in the SCP universe that brings the news and announcements of all SCP facilities to all foundation personnel. It is very much Welcome to Nightvale meets SCP in the way. The announcer DJ Scip has a hilarious delivery and brings the fun to the SCP universe. If you like other SCP fan content like Containment series on Youtube you will love this show. It is the SCP universe though so horror and reality bending events are going to happen so if that is not your cup of tea skip it.
The Mistholme Museum of Mystery Morbidity and Mortality
Listen to this helpful and friendly tour guide as it leads you through the strange and mysterious exhibits of this equally strange and mysterious museum. This show is like SCP if the SCP Foundation was actually good at their job of containing their subjects. The show balances its humor and horror perfectly and by the end you too will also want your own Guide. The show is currently ongoing with its fourth season so there is plenty of content!
The White Vault
Follow a repair team sent to Outpost Fristed in the middle of the wastes outside Svalbard. They quickly become snowed in by a terrible storm and come to find there are mysteries and horrors waiting for them beneath the ice. I’m gonna warn you now that this is a horror show that has no qualms killing characters so be forewarned if that’s not your thing. But if you are someone who likes a good horror story to keep you up at night then this is the show for you. The mystery will haunt you worse than the monsters and know that the show writers are not going to just give you any explanation of what or why things are happening the way they are. There is an eldritch horror to this that does not directly use any preexisting lore so you will likely leave with more questions than answers and looming dread to both wanting to understand and knowing that the truth may be worse to know. The show is five seasons long with bonus content available for purchase on their website. While the bonus content does have some valuable pieces of world building lore and some character set ups they are not necessary to enjoy the main story.
Spines
Wren wakes up suffering from memory loss, covered in blood, and surrounded in the remains of what looks to be some form of ritual. The only sources to he past are the fleeting names and faces of those who fled when she awoke. Follow her as she hunts them down to find out who she is, what happened to her, and how she can stop anyone from doing it again to anyone else. This show is a horror mystery that is engaging to follow and has a mystery that follows through with bringing more questions forward as old ones get answered. The horror does rely on a lot of body horror so use caution if that’s not your thing. But if you like a well written horror with ambiguous endings this is a good show to give a listen too.

Null/Void is a science fiction audio drama about a young woman, Piper Lee, whose life is saved by a mysterious voice named Adelaide. After uncovering a malicious plot, Piper and her friends defend their small town from a family of ruthless billionaires who wish to exploit and destroy it. Piper must fight to save her home and discover the true identity of Adelaide. Yall, this. show. is. so. good! It is fuck capitalism the podcast, which if you know me you'll know how big of a complement that is. The grittiness of Null/Void really brings to life how much it sucks when the world is against you - you get frustrated on behalf of the characters, and then you go out into the real world and get frustrated on behalf of yourself for having to deal with the same shit. I would fight Null/Void's Kyron Royal in the exact same way I would fight Jeff Bezos. Beyond the sheer relatability of the podcast, the acting and sound design are also very good. There is binary code THAT YOU CAN HEAR! Transcripts are here. They are not in binary code, I promise.

Happy New Year! 🥂
I've had this post saved for a while because since coming back to tumblr I've found it to be a really great space for setting myself accountable creatively. I've had a lot of ideas for goals I want to set for myself in 2023 so I'm gonna pin this post and keep coming back to it with progress/check ins. I'm also gonna queue this post for every month so I don't forget to revisit my list. Some stuff has to do with creating and some stuff are just personal things ✨
💀🎙 Write and produce monthly episodes of The Fear and Now
For my graduate degree I produced an analysis podcast about horror in fiction podcasts and part of changing my tumblr to The Fear and Now was partially to motivate me to make new episodes for the first time in more than 2 years. I'm basically going to reboot it entirely because I've become a much different producer since I started it but I'm excited to start working on it again. First step will be to relisten to the old episodes which is honestly what I'm most avoiding but I'm excited to do more analytical writing, research and use my improved editing skills to give it a facelift.
0/12
🎧 Write and post at least 25 Audio Drama Sunday posts
I've really been enjoying using tumblr as a way to recap my listening and get through my backlog of podcasts I want to listen to. On top of that it's been a great way to find new podcasts and support creators so I'm hoping to stay on a semi-weekly schedule but I'm also trying to set the expectation a little low 😅
1/25
🦉🌶 Finish writing the fiction podcast I started (8 episodes)
In 2022 I started writing my first ever fiction podcast, something I'd been wanting to do for years. It's been on hiatus for a few months but I want to come back around to it and at least get all the episodes in rough draft from.
2/8
✏️ Try NaNoWriMo for the first time
I discovered National Novel Writing Month (through a discord I'm a part of) this year and was a little too late to the party to try it myself but I'm really drawn to the idea of trying it November 2023. Of course, I think I'm gonna need to practice a lot to get myself prepared so I'm going to start setting daily word count goals every month.
Jan: 500 words | 75%
Feb: 500 words
📖 Read at least one novel a month
In 2022 some friends started a book club and it's really helped me get back into the habit of having structured reading time. Looking forward to reading more and keeping track of the new books I'll read in the new year!
1/12
💻 Give more feedback to writers/creators on tumblr
I've started following a few different writers on tumblr whose short stories I really enjoy and I want to get more into the habit of reaching out and telling them what I love about their work. It's one of those things that I've only recently spent much time thinking about but I think often I'm a passive enjoyer of content and want to actively be more involved as an audience member in 2023.
🎶 Self publish a mixtape of instrumentals
In 2022 I got into a routine of posting quick little sample-based sketches and beats. In the new year I want to take the best of those sketches and make them into a proper mixtape/EP that I'll publish via Bandcamp. I'm not really sure how to track the progress on something like this but I know I just want to have what I consider a finished project by this time next year.

✨ Explore my hair/gender expression
This one is literally impossible to quantify but it's something I want to reflect on and be more actively engaged with this year. So much of my life I feel like I've tried to ignore thinking about and exploring my own style and gender and its only recently that I've felt some regret about it. I want to buy new clothes and try new hairstyles and feel more comfortable in my own skin and I think I've found that for me I need to write it somewhere if I actually want to do the damn thing 😅 so this is me doing that lol

I really need some utopia
I just can't handle dystopian science fiction anymore, on account of it becoming dystopian science realty at such alarming rates. Likewise, I can't watch nature documentaries anymore, because every documentary about the wonders of the natural world reminds me that this world is forever destroyed at incredible speed. I can't watch the news or investigative journalism anymore because we are ruled by the uncaring, or incompetent, or downright evil people.
Still, the mind needs some distractions. So: Has anybody recommendations for upbeat, hopeful science fiction?
Wanted:
- competent, compassionate, moral leaders/organizations
- a society that moved beyond prejudice, greed and ignorance
- a healthy earth
- compassion and science saves the day
I watched all of Star Trek and read most of the Culture series. You got any recommendations? Taking all media, but preferable audio drama/podcast or on German Netflix.

i know you listen to a lot of podcasts and ive found some of my favourites from hearing you talk about them! do you have any favourites?
under the cut! my top 10 podcasts at the moment:
Alice Isn’t Dead Genre: horror, thriller, drama, Lovecraftian, Americana Episode count: 30 (completed) Description: A truck driver searches across America for the wife she had long assumed was dead. In the course of her search, she will encounter not-quite-human serial murderers, towns literally lost in time, and a conspiracy that goes way beyond one missing woman. Thoughts: This podcast is, to me at least, completely flawless in every way. I would consider myself a person that listens to a lot of horror podcasts, but Alice Isn’t Dead takes the cake for its depictions of liminal middle America, the horror that is capitalism, and the most tender, realistic depiction of lesbians in any podcast. Anything else I could say would spoil it and for this, I don’t want to spoil it because I want every person alive that can stomach horror to listen to this.
Archive 81 Genre: horror, comedy, sci-fi, Lovecraftian Episode count: 35 (ongoing) Description: Archive 81 is a found footage horror podcast about ritual, stories, and sound. Thoughts: The latest podcast I’ve tried, and it’s definitely one that grows on you. The audio mixing is some of the best I’ve heard in any podcast, and every bump and scratch and hum of frequency weaves to form moments that are truly and viscerally gory. Season 3 and Left of The Dial are my favorites because again, I love Americana horror, and anything that involves family!
Artificial Ghost Radio Genre: non-fiction, discussion, comedy Episode count: 75 (ongoing) Description: Our Sisyphean music recommendation challenge with hosts Miles (he/him) and Jupiter (she/they) challenge each other to find songs based on arbitrary themes and to spin the WHEEL OF DISCORD to talk about a random song from their library! They can be found on twitter @artghostpod. Thoughts: Gotta plug my own podcast! We’re still small, but the people I’ve met from doing AGR has made my life richer and fuller, even through the ups and downs. I recommend starting with #58: Songs about Aliens ft. our friend Liz (@thescaryjokes)!
EOS 10 Genre: medical drama, comedy, sci-fi Episode count: 34 (ongoing) Description: Doctors in space, a deposed alien prince, a super gay space pirate and a fiery nurse who'll help you win your bar fight. Thoughts: It’s been a hot minute since I listened, but as someone that inherently loves things like Star Trek and procedural comedies, EOS 10 is a quick and hilarious listen! Fair warning some of the earlier stuff is a little bit ignorant when it comes to their LGBT characters, but it gets a lot better over time.
King Falls AM Genre: horror, comedy, Lovecraftian Episode count: 100 (ongoing) Description: King Falls AM centers on a lonely little mountain town's late-night AM talk radio show and its paranormal, peculiar happenings and inhabitants Thoughts: I’m a bit behind, but again, gotta love some Alpine American horror! King Falls AM perfectly captures the feeling and sound of listening to a small late night radio show with two bros, but it really goes from typical dude dialogue to heart wrenching found family alien conspiracy real quick. Same as EOS 10, fair warning for some ignorant language and LGBT stereotypes, but they address it and it gets better as it progresses.
Not Another D&D Podcast Genre: actual play Dungeons and Dragons, TTRPG, comedy Episode count: 128 (ongoing) Description: Welcome to the campaign after the campaign! Three unlikely adventurers attempt to right the wrongs caused by a party of legendary heroes who screwed up the world while trying to save it. Thoughts: I’m only like 40 episodes in because they’re thick, meaty ‘sodes, but god is NADDPOD fucking hilarious. I’ve tried a fair few TTRPG shows, but the chemistry and care that the cast has together is unmatched by others in the genre. I’m a complete sucker for shows that are so funny and so tragic in equal measures, and the entire concept of a D&D game set after the world has been so drastically changed by a different D&D game is so unique!
The Faculty of Horror Genre: non-fiction, horror, philosophy, sociology, feminism Episode count: 86 (ongoing) Description: Tackling all things horror with a slash of analysis and research, horror journalists and occasional academics Andrea Subissati and Alexandra West are your hosts for brain-plumping discussions on all things that go bump in the night. Thoughts: A little non-fiction in this list of fiction podcasts! The Faculty of Horror is a concise and educated intersectional feminist podcast, and it’s a breath of fresh air to listen to anyone that isn’t a cishet white guy talk about horror. I highly recommend the episode on Cabin in The Woods or Jennifer’s Body!
The Magnus Archives Genre: horror, office comedy Episode count: 180 (ongoing) Description: The Magnus Archives is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organization dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Join new head archivist Jonathan Sims as he attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of supernatural statements up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team. Thoughts: TMA is, similarly to A81, a bit of a slow burn to get into, but I think once you listen to a few episodes you’ll know if you want to continue. It’s a pretty standard prompt for a narrative, but the sheer amount of individual short horror stories they’ve managed to write is insane! And I love the slow break down between recording statements and the stuff happening within the archives. Also one of the best redemption stories in a character that starts off as such a grumpy fuck!
The Penumbra Podcast Genre: sci-fi, neo-noir, romance, comedy, found family, magic, medieval fantasy, adventure, mystery Episode count: 75 (ongoing) Description: At the Penumbra, you might follow Juno Steel, a brooding, sharp-witted private eye on Mars, as he tangles with an elusive homme fatale, tracks dangerous artifacts of an ancient alien civilization, and faces his three greatest fears: heights, blood, and relationships. Or you might enter the world of the Second Citadel, where the merciless Sir Caroline must corral a team of emotionally distraught all-male knights to defend their city against mind-manipulating monsters...even the ones they’ve fallen in love with. Thoughts: On god TPP was a life changing podcast for me. Having creators that are genuinely concerned with accurately representing minorities with care and dedication makes me feel spoiled when I try listen to anything else. The two main universes are so different with their own set of histories and cultures, but I love them both so completely. If you want LGBT+ representation, this is the seminal podcast for everything non-binary, trans, queer, and people that aren’t afraid to change and have that change be known! I haven’t listened to another podcast that actually depicts transitioning like they do, absolute king shit.
Wolf 359 Genre: space drama, comedy, action Episode count: 61 (completed) Description: WOLF 359 is a radio drama in the tradition of Golden Age of Radio shows. Set on board the U.S.S. Hephaestus space station, the dysfunctional crew deals with daily life-or-death emergencies, while searching for signs of alien life and discovering there might be more to their mission than they thought Thoughts: Wolf 359 is like if you fell down the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs was a bear trap, and then after you step in the bear trap someone helps you take off that beartrap, but then they kick you in the nuts. Just replace physical pain with emotional pain. It can be so funny but also so fucking stressful and sad – w359 isn’t afraid to kill its darlings, and it will break your heart but you will still say thank you.

Moodboard and a WIP introduction
EMERGENCY BROADCAST (working title)
Genre: Science fiction, humor, epistolary novel POV: 1st person Themes: Communication, loneliness, friendship, love, optimism, power of words, search for meaning Status: Prepping Inspiration: Plans: NaNoWriMo 2020, and after that... I might be interested in developing this into a radio drama, but since radio is dying, maybe a podcast or an audio book.
Stranded in a foreign planet, chased by bandits, Otava finds himself in an abandoned radio tower. He quickly tries to send out an emergency broadcast. He needs to be saved from this trap, and he needs to go home. No help seems to come, so the next day he tries again. And the next. And the next. He feels like he’s just talking into the void, but that’s okay. That’s actually pretty nice.
Eventually Otava ends up meeting people, exploring the area, and realising this might be exactly what he wants to be doing.
Emergency Broadcast is a collection of monologues. It’s a collection of whatever Otava is broadcasting with his radioset. It’s something very new to me, but I’m looking forward to it.

Podcasts in review
Simple and nice list of all the podcasts I discovered in 2020. I had to go to the office alone during quarantine, don’t @ me. So, let’s start with fiction.
- numbers in brackets the number of episodes listened and existing, not rating - * indicate currently ongoing productions - cursive is for the cool kids
Friends at the table (a lot/a lot)
Hands down, the best actual play podcast out there. It rarely happens that an improvised TTRPG would end up creating a world that is as rich and engaging as the Divine universe. Also Austin Walker is my second philosophy teacher (first was Detective Pony).
Tomorrow the void (8/8) Quantum entanglement runs in the family. Moody. Sad mad old men. Includes a robot ball.
This planet needs a name (5/5) * The most heartwarming post-apocalyptic tale, a rare sci-fi with a soul. Instills the desire to grab coffee with all the 7 characters after the prologue. Hopeful, mindful, soothingly slow paced. The new world will be better if we try.
Lighthearts (4/4) * A new queer community space is learning to cope with ghosts and new ways to connect people. Just all around warm and nice. From the same people who do This Planet Needs a Name.
Murmurs (10/10) A very well produced (from BBC, duh) loose anthology (separate stories loosely connected to each other). An art house movie in audio form. Episode second includes an extremely touching love story and an instance of fucking a ghost.
The tower (7/7) It's Celeste. Climbing the tower to face the challenge and free yourself from the human condition for a while. It's not literally Celeste, but you know.
Middle below (10/10) A nervous ghost whisperer has one friend. The tag line of the show is "bad things will happen", and which has been an anxiety reliever and a call to action.
Folxlore (3/3) Short horror stories from, by, about and for queer people from Scotland. The last one about pregnancy really hurted.
Dungeon economic model (10/10) Less than 5 minute vignettes about why you should invest in dungeons. Some nice background worldbuilding.
London necropolis railway (7/7) Ghouls and humans learn the true value of friendship and acceptance and defiance.
The vanishing act (2/?) The promise of urban fantasy set in the 1930s Berlin underground culture, despite its magnificent appeal, is dwarfed by how annoying the MC is. He's the not funny type of an asshole - dumb, mean to his friends, hates women, utterly insufferable (and I can tolerate a lot of mediocre audio fiction). The production quality is top notch though.
Station Arcadia (3/?) They are trying, and it's admirable. Would really benefit from a link to the map.
Midst (19/19) Fantasy story set in the world where the accounting is worshipped as a religion, following three protagonists, and told by three narrators - simultaneously, which had proven to be an incredibly fun technique. Worth a listen to at least check it out.
Null/void (9/?) * Anti-capitalist digital goddess preventing the marketing stunts of a malicious company. Way less cool than it sounds.
Circles (4/4) Beth Eyre is great. The rest of the story (even though it has demons) - eh.
Forgive me (4/4) * Sitcom in the form of confessional testimonies of people revealing their sins to a pastor, who himself is running from something. Yes. Surprisingly well made.
Next stop (10/10) Sitcom about three wacky millennials. More energetic than endearing.
Less is Morgue (5/?) * Sitcom about a ghoul and a ghost with an annoying voice.
Me & AU (11/11) * Turns out, love can blossom on the battlefield of fandom shipping.
Old gods of Appalachia (12.5/12.5) * Good spooky stories with impeccable atmosphere that are hard to follow for me, for some reason.
Temujin (5/5) A small, tidy and inscrutable audio drama depicting Genghis Khan's origin story. I have not read The Secret History of Mongols, but I doubt it's that accurate to the text.
Godshead Incidental (4/4) * There is a girl who tries to live in the world after her sister's disappearance. There are gods. There is an endearing fixer/private consultant with some family drama. Looks to be a very promising show about getting to terms with your trauma set in a fun world with fun characters. Updating slowly, but surely.
Left Right Game (10/10) Audio adaptation of a serialized story on r/nosleep. High production values, alluring mysterious world, characters that exist only to be killed off every episode.
Valence (12/12) MC with a special depression inner voice learns to meet new people, overcome trauma, find love, fight capitalism. Would not call the world or the characters particularly interesting, despite most of them being magic users.
Unseen (5/?) A new anthology about magic from Wolf 359 people. One can listen to them say "are you watching closely" only so many times.
Whirlwind for hire (4/?) Musicals are very ambitious undertakings, by default. This one has immortals, gods, nature spirits? Good for them.
Fall of the house of sunshine (8/a lot) Podcast musical about a murder on a children’s tv show, accordingly fast-paced. A ton of tiny wacky details about the world of teeth and its pearly truth (and more!). The only even remotely sympathetic story was left to the antagonist.
Mockery Manor (6/?) * An old amusement park, twins, family secrets. Even features a tiger! Not as cool as its premises promises.
Brimstone Valley Mall (10/10) A band of lovable misfit demons trying to survive the reckoning from their dead end jobs.
In Strange Woods (3/?) A musical that is unfortunately structured as a true crime. Features Patrick Page from Hadestown, so any and all faults are immediately forgiven.
The Cipher (2/8) Textbook YA about a 16 girl that revels a bit too much in the pain it causes her. At first you think “oh, poc representation”, but it’s just so she can be an orphan chosen one.
Non fiction
Into the Zone (8/8) An actually thought provoking and well crafted podcast. By pitting “opposites” against each other, valuable philosophical and sociological ideas reveal themselves in the space in between.
HiPhi nation Real life alarming and amazing stories used to broach philosophical subjects. Sometimes veers into “we need more female drone pilots”, but for the most part interesting.
How to save a planet Literally, how people survive catastrophes individually and communally - and how should you.

MONTHLY MEDIA: February 2020
Okay two months into the year! Here’s all the stuff I read/watched/heard/played/and generally experienced in February!
……….FILM……….
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/47d044cb5a6aaffbc3055e88c4c9580e/e968901176fcc215-a8/s540x810/5c9d13bc60d5b826b4e3b814b50e3ce2d663de9a.jpg)
The Favourite (2018) We were in the exact right mood for this and it was as weird and dramatic and well-acted as I’d hoped. It does a great job of shifting tone and the movie probably took an extra half hour to watch as we paused and looked up the accuracy of everything about Queen Anne and Sarah Marlborough. Everything about this movie (and the history it’s based on) was just bonkers.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3ed24fb063038d8ceaa83115797b773f/e968901176fcc215-9a/s540x810/2fec4b983f526670411f0ffb426fc0f566c4b208.jpg)
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020) Super fun! It was silly and heartfelt and shockingly violent (they did a great job of having like...a baseline of violence that was pretty lowkey and then really hitting you with one or two super gruesome moments). I haven’t seen Suicide Squad but this worked for me on its own. Also the fight choreography was incredible! There’s just so much to love here. Oh I would’ve liked to see a little more costuming from the other cast members, but understand why that didn’t quite fit into this. Anyway, good time at the movies.
Down a Dark Hall (2018) Very very okay. It’s a slow burn and has a gothic vibe. None of the characters get a lot of depth but they’re well-acted. It’s just like...a solid 6.5/7ish out of 10, you know? Like not GREAT, but also good enough that it was fine.
……….TELEVISION……….
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f98e3a201edd79a62c7567f73d7e08f7/e968901176fcc215-cd/s1280x1920/23b350eaaddec7b08e07dbe6108488d12823b24b.jpg)
What We Do in the Shadows (Episode 1.01 to 1.07) So so good and I’m surprised I haven’t heard more people talking about this. It has enough of what I loved about the movie (charming characters and cast, fun play with what it means to be vampires, and a lot of comedy pulled from the contrast of the fantastical and the mundane) and there’s lots of new stuff as well (married vampires, american location, etc.) Really worth checking out and it makes so much sense to transition this to tv. The effects are fantastic and they don’t seem to be pulling their punches with the gore either. Very excited for more.
The Bachelor (Episode 24.05 to 24.09) I think the produces are wringing every drop of drama out of the interpersonal relationship between the women because Peter is such a dud. It’s a shame. If they took a risk and tried someone who broke the mould, then we’d get tv that breaks the mould. The only thing that’ll save this season for me is if Hannah B. comes back at the very end.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Episode 3.04 to 3.08) A fun season, though I never really love magic plots where a the main hurdle is no magic. This is not why I watch a magic show. The eldritch horrors and spooky carnivals and insane spells are what I love. The writing feels like it’s veering into Riverdale territory, but I can’t decide if it’s always been that way.
The Good Place (Episode 4.10 to 4.13) Oof. What a great ending. And credit to everyone involved that they created a series that set out to tell a specific story, explore specific themes, and did so with laser focus. Well-planned, excellent writing, and equal parts funny and emotional. Excellent stuff.
……….READING……….
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3868507af14d4f63ebe138f77126a9b4/e968901176fcc215-b4/s540x810/113fefcd7203f98d98eecc78c2af5c8842824a8e.jpg)
The Time Traveler’s Almanac edited by Ann and Jeff VanderMeer (Page 357/959) Such a great collection of short stories. I usually come back to this collection of time-travel stories when I’m in between books and it never disappoints. It’s also a great way to find new sci-fi or fantasy writers and to get a sense of their writing style without commiting to an entire book. Worth checking out if you like science fiction or, even better, time travel.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (Complete) Having only a casual understanding of the story, I was surprised by how relevant it felt. The story of a “good” man who indulges in dark deeds, swears it’s not him, asks for pity from the reader, and yet continues to do this stuff feels veeeeeery topical. Maybe Jekyll was sympathetic when the book was written?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7d153824e213162d4797d6a76e73af73/e968901176fcc215-99/s540x810/909d85d6e5f6ff02f1959610441dba13aca8bf7f.jpg)
Silver Surfer: Black by Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, and Dave Stewart (Complete) I really think Silver Surfer is becoming one of my favourite marvel characters because this book is exactly why I love comics. The writing is melodramatic yet sincere, the art is wildly inventive but coherent, and the story itself is a little sci-fi with fantasy elements. Absolutely worth checking out if you like Silver Surfer or crazy good art or bonkers stuff that doesn’t feel bonkers until you explain it out loud. It’s just a lot of fun.
Marvels by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross (Complete) Art was/is/and will forever be stellar. I just can’t imagine how much time and love went into each panel. The writing is also wonderful and the overall story (life from the perspective of a civilians living in a world full of super-heroes) felt fully realized here. It’s fun seeing big comic book events from the point-of-view of a street-level photographer. With that said, I didn’t like the ending. I think it’s a good ending, but I didn’t like it. My gut tells me that it ended on a note that is contrary to the message being presented for 75% of the book. It’s one I have to think on a little more.
……….AUDIO……….
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/739315cd83cdcadefca5cd9c7f151f25/e968901176fcc215-d3/s500x750/fde063488e0da22caf5e9850369dd9c1ca0812aa.jpg)
Judy con Disfraz by Los Sirex (1965) So this is just one song, but I’ve been listening to a lot of foreign language covers of english songs and this one is probably my favourite right now.
……….GAMING……….
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/45bba78b0fd1861966e9d06f021ac027/e968901176fcc215-b7/s540x810/12449c2906bd37ef24c256fedb5b8ffdcc1092dc.jpg)
Neverland: Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) I got to play two different games of this over the month! My ongoing campaign is exploring the island a little more and are getting into lots of trouble. The one shot I did with the Mof1 Podcast should be out in March and it was great introducing a few people to both the island AND D&D in general! So great.
Curse of Strahd (Wizards of the Coast) The party finally escaped Death House! We’re starting to explore more of Barovia and I think the party is starting to realize just how deep in the forest they’ve gone.
And that’s it! As always, I’m keen to hear good things to check out so don’t hesitate to share a recommendation.
Happy Saturday!
