Nestled just 60 kilometres west of the bustling city of Bangalore lies a hidden gem of tranquillity and natural beauty — Savandurga Hills. As a resident of the city, I often find myself seeking solace from the daily grind, and Savandurga trekking has become my go-to escape. This majestic hill, standing tall at 1,200 metres above sea level, offers a perfect blend of adventure, spirituality, and breathtaking landscapes.
In this blog article, I’ll take you on a virtual journey to Savandurga and share why it’s my favourite Bangalore escape into serenity.
The Majestic Monolith: Savanadurga Hill
Savanadurga Hill is renowned for being one of the largest monoliths in Asia. Its imposing presence and rugged terrain make it a favourite spot for trekkers and rock climbers.
Savandurga is where I turn when I crave adventure. The thrill of trekking here is incomparable. Whether I choose to conquer Karigudda or Biligudda, I’m in for a treat. The trekking trails take me through diverse landscapes — dense forests, rocky outcrops, and open vistas that leave me in awe. The Savandurga trek distance varies depending on my choice. If I opt for Karigudda, it’s a manageable 2.5 kilometres, perfect for a quick getaway. But when I’m up for a challenge, I go for Biligudda, with a trek distance of approximately 4.5 kilometres.
Getting to Savandurga Hills from Bangalore
Reaching Savandurga Hills from Bangalore is a breeze. Here’s my preferred route:
By Road: I love the freedom of the open road. It’s just a 50 to 60-kilometer drive from the heart of Bangalore. Whether I’m behind the wheel or riding shotgun, the journey usually takes around 2–3 hours, depending on traffic.
Public Transport: On days when I want to let someone else do the driving, I take a bus to Magadi, the closest town to Savandurga. From there, I hop into a local auto-rickshaw or cab for the short ride to the hills.
Why I Choose Savandurga for My Escape into Serenity
Spiritual Connection:
Savandurga isn’t just a natural wonder; it’s also a place of profound spiritual significance. As I approach the foothills, the Narasimha Swamy Temple stands tall as a symbol of reverence for ancient traditions. The tranquil atmosphere and the gentle hum of visitors paying their respects create an aura of calm that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Wildlife Encounters:
What amazes me about Savandurga is its rich biodiversity. As I ascend the hills, I’m always on the lookout for various species of birds, butterflies, and even reptiles. On some fortunate occasions, I’ve even spotted elusive creatures like leopards and sloth bears that call the surrounding forests home. It’s a heartwarming reminder that even near a bustling city like Bangalore, nature’s wonders continue to thrive.
Stunning Sunsets:
My most cherished moments at Savandurga involve witnessing the sun slowly dip below the horizon. The breathtaking play of colours in the sky, combined with the tranquil silence of the hills, creates a mesmerizing experience.
Picnic Paradise:
Savandurga isn’t limited to adventure seekers like me; it’s also an ideal spot for a relaxed picnic. The base of the hills offers several open spaces where one can spread out a blanket, enjoy a meal, and immerse oneself in the natural surroundings. It’s a perfect setting for spending quality time with friends and family, away from the city.
Enchanting Waterfalls:
Tucked away within lush landscapes are the hidden waterfalls Savan Durga. This natural gem, although seasonal, adds an element of awe to my trekking adventures. The gentle sound of flowing water and the cool, crystal-clear pools provide a refreshing respite during my journey, making my visits to Savandurga even more unforgettable.
Tips for a Memorable Savandurga Trekking
Here are a few tips that I’d like to share for anyone planning a visit to Savandurga:
Plan Your Visit According to the Season: Savandurga’s charm varies throughout the year. Consider visiting during the post-monsoon season (from September to February) when the weather is pleasant, and the waterfalls are more likely to be flowing. Avoid the scorching summer months to ensure a more comfortable trek.
Footwear Matters: Wear sturdy and comfortable trekking shoes with a good grip. The terrain can be rocky and uneven, so proper footwear is essential to prevent slips and ensure a safe trekking experience.
Stay Hydrated: Carry an ample supply of water, especially during the hotter months. Staying hydrated is crucial, as there may not be many water sources along the trail.
Pack a Small Backpack: A small backpack can be a lifesaver. It’s handy for carrying essentials like snacks, a first-aid kit, a rain jacket, and your camera or smartphone for capturing beautiful moments.
Respect Nature: Savandurga is a pristine natural environment, so it’s vital to leave no trace. Carry a trash bag and dispose of your waste responsibly. Respect the local flora and fauna, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
Know Your Limits: While Savandurga offers treks for all levels, know your physical limits and choose a trek that matches your fitness level. If you’re a beginner, consider hiring a local guide who can provide guidance and ensure your safety.
Start Early: To make the most of your day and avoid the scorching midday sun, start your trek early in the morning. This also gives you a better chance of spotting wildlife and enjoying the serenity of the hills before the crowds arrive.
Check Local Regulations: Before your visit, check if there are any specific regulations or entry fees in place. Staying informed about local guidelines will help you have a hassle-free experience.
Travel Light: Minimize the weight of your backpack by carrying only the essentials. A lighter load will make your trek more enjoyable and less tiring.
Enjoy the Journey: While making it to the summit is undoubtedly an achievement, it’s equally important to relish every step of the journey. Take breaks, admire the breathtaking views, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty that Savandurga has to offer.
Embracing Serenity in Savandurga
Savandurga Hills, my cherished escape from the bustling city of Bangalore, is a testament to the wonders of nature and the serenity it can offer. Its majestic peaks, hidden waterfalls, spiritual ambience, and vibrant wildlife create a tapestry of experiences that have etched unforgettable memories in my heart.
Whether you’re a trekking enthusiast seeking adventure, a nature lover yearning for tranquillity, or someone simply in search of a serene retreat, Savandurga has something to offer for everyone. So, the next time you find yourself in Bangalore, take a break from the urban chaos and embark on a journey to Savandurga. Happy Trekking!

About Savandurga Trek:
If you're in the mood for something a little more daring this weekend, a roughly 5-kilometer day hike to Savandurga Hill would be excellent. Nearly 60 kilometres from Bangalore, Savandurga Hill which is roughly 1226 meters above sea level is the largest monolith in Asia. The hill serves as the hiking route to Savandurga Hill and is made up of two granite boulders known as "Karigudda," or the "black hill," and "Biligudda," or the "white hill." The 'Biligudda' route is the better option as 'Karigudda' has several steep inclines and hazardous paths that need a permit. At the top of the hill are the remnants of a fort that was formerly a prison. Given its incline, it was also known as the Fort of Death or Savandurga.

Footwear Matters: Your choice of footwear can significantly influence your trekking experience. Invest in comfortable, sturdy trekking shoes with good grip and ankle support. Ill-fitting or inappropriate shoes can lead to blisters and discomfort, potentially affecting your progress.
Dress Smartly: Dressing in layers is an intelligent strategy for trekking, especially in regions with varying altitudes. Start with a moisture-wicking starting layer to keep sweat away from the skin, add insulating layers for warmth, and finish with a waterproof and windproof outer layer to protect against changing weather conditions. This layering system allows you to adapt to temperature fluctuations and stay comfortable.
Pack Snacks and a First-Aid Kit: Carry a selection of energy-boosting snacks like nuts, granola bars, and dried fruit to keep the energy levels up during breaks. A basic first-aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary personal medications can be a lifesaver in case of minor injuries or discomfort.
Leave No Trace: Responsible trekking involves adhering to the Leave No Trace principles. This means respecting the natural environment by not littering, disturbing wildlife, or damaging vegetation. Always carry your trash back with you, avoid loud noises, and follow established trails to minimize your impact on the ecosystem.
These comprehensive trekking tips are essential for your safety and contribute to a more enjoyable and environmentally responsible trekking experience.
