Dear Brother (Oniisama e…) LaserDisc scans and machine translations
Tumblr media
These past few years I have fallen in love with the work of director Osamu Dezaki. Alongside Tomorrow’s Joe (Ashita no Joe), I hold Dear Brother in the highest regard.
It was a 1991 anime based on Riyoko Ikeda’s 1974 manga. You should watch the anime. It’s on Tubi for free. But really, just trust me. Buy the Blu-Ray from Discotek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This anime came and went. There isn’t any merchandise besides some phone cards. Decaying fan sites and discourse is out there, but it’s a bit of a hunt.
Some time ago I saw a fan letter written by Hideaki Anno, apparently from the LaserDisc releases. From what I could tell, the LaserDisc packaging featured a treasure trove of notes from the staff that I just had to read. But I couldn’t find them!
If you’re not aware, LaserDiscs are one step above burnable trash in Japan — often on sale for 200 yen or less in heavy boxes shoved into the corner of second-hand anime stores. So I bought all five volumes of the 1993 Dear Brother LaserDisc release, was thrilled to notice unique letters from staff and industry luminaries in the interiors, and I scanned everything! And machine translated them.
I hope this (long, comprehensive) post brings fans of Dear Brother the same pleasure it brought me to compose it!
Note: I cannot read Japanese. I’ve used Google Lens for OCR, and GPT-4 for translation. My scans are good (and you can get them on Archive.org in high res) but these translations are not archive-quality and should not be depended on without verification. I’ve done my best to make corrections and have attempted to wrangle the correct tone and meaning out of the AI, but they’re essentially just for fun. Corrections of the most egregious stuff would be welcomed, email me: [email protected].
Volume One

Each disc is themed after a character and colour. The back is peppered with screencaps and notable quotes (“Anata wa dare?” says little Nanako) as well as series credits. The two notable parts to translate are the disc synopsis, and the subheading (seen here in pink on the far left.) Maybe it’s a pull quote? Not really. So I called it a subheading.
Volume One Subheading
A forbidden cult anime masterpiece born of satellite broadcasting is finally available on LD.
Volume One Synopsis
Private Seiran Academy. A story of beautiful love and deep hatred unfolds at this prestigious all-girls high school steeped in tradition. The protagonist, Nanako Misonoo, who is thrilled to enroll in the high school division of her dream academy, encounters three stunning individuals: Miya-sama, Sanjust-sama, and Sho no Kimi. She also gets introduced to the glamorous world of Seiran Sorority, a society that only the chosen few are allowed to join. As a freshman granted unexpected membership in the Sorority, Nanako begins to take a deep look at love, friendship, and the essence of being human, all while being surrounded by envy and jealousy. She confides her various experiences at the academy, along with unspeakable worries and hardships, in letters to her elder “brother” and a young man named Takehiko Henmi… A masterpiece anime born of satellite broadcasting. It is a work by Riyoko Ikeda that the Dezaki-Sugino duo took on for the first time in 11 years since “The Rose of Versailles.” It is considered a unique work that brings a fresh, unprecedented shock by transcending the framework of TV anime with its aesthetic world.
The disc looks like this:
Tumblr media
An “obi” (sash that covers the spine) is included. Of course, it says “My tears won’t stop!” in huge text, sells it as the latest Dezaki/Sugino collaboration, and describes it as tanibi na sekai — a poetic concept of a romantic, sublime world of aesthetic beauty.
There are two paper inserts in each volume. The first one looks like this, and is an index of LaserDisc chapter markers based not on plot developments, but notable character quotes.
Tumblr media
There’s also a form you can fill out to get a telephone card. Simply cut out a coupon from each volume to prove you bought the full set. Be quick, entries are due end of March 1994.

The interior is the best part. Here’s the spread for Volume One.

I haven’t translated episode synopses, but I’ve attempted to translate both the staff letter and the “letter to dear brother” from someone external to the production. There’s a bio for each author.
Volume One’s “From the staff to all the fans”
Bio:
Osamu Dezaki Joined Mushi Production in 1963. After directing series like “Astro Boy” and “Goku’s Great Adventure,” he was selected as the general director for “Tomorrow’s Joe” in 1970 at the young age of 26. Born on November 18, 1943, and hailing from Tokyo, he has received high praise as a director. Subsequently, he has brought numerous masterpieces into the world, including “Aim for the Ace!”, “The Adventures of Ganba,” “Nobody’s Boy,” “Treasure Island,” “The Rose of Versailles,” “Space Adventure Cobra,” “BB,” and more. He is also referred to as “Sakimakura” and “Mataba Sakimakura.”
The letter:
This is my second time working on Ikeda-san’s work since “The Rose of Versailles.” Her works have a unique aroma, whether you call it a theme or a world. They seem to pursue the literary aspect of the story. When I read the original work of “Dear Brother,” I was very drawn to these aspects, and at the same time, I felt a sense of anticipation that it would be difficult, but perhaps various images could be created. It’s not just about being cool or intense; it’s about creating images that resonate more and more with people’s hearts. Fundamentally, there is an original story, but when the characters start to move, and each begins to live, the story could go anywhere. I always had that sense of tension. So, rather than sticking to the original work, I placed more emphasis on the directorial focus of the reality of the characters who had started to move. As for the techniques, it was not something I was particularly conscious of, but I used a lot of completely black shots simply because I honestly felt they needed to be black. Whether or not it was successful, I wanted to effectively overlap the visuals with the characters’ psychology by delivering such physiological shocks. The psychological fluctuations of the people are indeed the overall aroma of this work. How the audience perceives that aroma is something I want to leave up to each individual’s free sensitivity. - July 8, 1993, at Tezuka Pro

Comics are way hard to translate without actually knowing Japanese. Here’s my best effort to uncover some meaning.
For several years, I had stopped watching anime and stuff… Living a hectic life, it’s been like this for a while now. Having a set day and a set time to watch a specific program (not just limited to anime), had become impossible for me. Recording videos is also a hassle, and first and foremost, I just don’t feel that “I must watch the next episode!” kind of emotion anymore. Ah well, I was thinking maybe I’ve just become an adult. Heh heh heh. I’m such an idiot. No, that’s not it.
The blonde guy in the bottom-right is labeled as her friend, and she’s saying something about “Poupee-chan”. I think in the second panel he’s yelling saying “But that doll is supposed to be a girl!”
The final monologue starts with:
By the way, I have a container for “dangerous items” at the corner of my work desk. I keep things like cutter blades in it, so that I don’t accidentally drop them on the floor and cut myself or something. The “dangerous items” container I’m using now has a sticker with Saint-Just-sama’s “Nanako’s Eyes,” heh heh heh ♡
That’s about all there is to note about Volume One, besides the fact it comes with an enormous poster (it’s the same art used on the cover of the Discotek Blu-Ray.)

Those eyes of that person, mysteriously and beautifully shining. Why these feelings? Why...? The increasing heartbeat, the endless tears of adolescence. A masterpiece of forbidden cult anime born from satellite broadcasting! The second installment on LaserDisc!
Volume Two Synopsis
Nanako’s life at school, after being chosen as a sorority member, was not all glitz and glamour. There were misunderstandings with her best friend Tomiko, and jealousy and slander from other students, including Misaki Aya. And then there was the obsessive love from her fellow sorority member, Nobuo Mariko. “What is a sorority? Is it really that important?” Nanako began to question the very existence of sororities. Yet, she tries to look straight into herself, even while confused. Always before her were the mysteriously beautiful and shining eyes of Saint-Just. Drawn to those eyes that seemed to peer into a distant past, Nanako attempts to uncover their secret. Then, by chance, she finds out about the special relationship between Fukiko and Saint-Just. Could it be that Miya-sama and Saint-Just-sama are…? The complicated interplay of relationships and the previously enigmatic characters start to become a little clearer in “Volume 2: The Chapter of Freezing Rain.” The subtle breaths of the people surrounding Nanako can be heard.

Volume Two’s “From the staff, Dear Nanako”
Bio:
Hideo Takayashiki Born in 1947, native of Iwate Prefecture. After passing through Osamu Tezuka’s Mushi Production, became a scenario writer. Known for scripts of theatrical anime films such as “Hang in There, Tabuchi-kun!”, “Barefoot Gen”, and the “Phoenix” series. Also worked on numerous TV anime scripts like “Gutsy Frog”, “Gamba’s Adventure”, and “Tomorrow’s Joe”. Additionally, wrote scripts for original videos and TV dramas like “The Laughing Target”, “One-Pound Gospel”, and has written many novels, actively contributing as a versatile scriptwriter. Member of the Japan Broadcast Writers Association.
The letter:
Dear Nanako Misonoo, How are you? How is university life? It’s hard to believe that three years have passed since then. I was involved with you and those around you for just one year, but in retrospect, it was a very intense year. In any case, I did something terrible to you. It may have been the extreme form of “bullying” in some sense. My work as a scriptwriter involved probing and expanding the uncharted worlds between the frames of original works, constructing new narratives. In a sense, it was a painful job. And for you, it was excruciating. But now it’s a wonderful memory. I am filled with the feeling that I did some real work after a long time. How is your best friend, Tomoko? What about Mariko? I assume Fuki is becoming more and more beautiful? Do you occasionally receive letters from Kaoru? This summer marked the third anniversary of Saint-Just-sama’s passing. Thinking back, it was an unusually hot day. Your anguished form, waiting alone at the platform while listening to the chirping cicadas and the sound of the sea, is still etched in my memory. I hear that there has not been a single day without flowers at the electric pole where Saint-Just-sama fell. I am grateful for the chance to have met you and the people around you. Autumn, 1993

Kazuhiko Shimamoto Born April 26, 1961 From the hinterland of Hokkaido After being selected as an honorable mention in the 9th Shogakukan Newcomer Comics Award Debuted with “Hissatsu no Transfer Student”. Another piece directed by Osamu Dezaki and supervised by Akio Sugino has become a permanent edition (converted to LaserDisc)! (Hooray!) From the anime “Ashita no Joe” (1), the unique and beautiful way of life portrayed in anime is so intense that it has consistently given us dreams, hopes, despair, loneliness, friendship, love, perseverance, and revival! These works have even surpassed the original works in the emotional impact of their final episodes. I continue to be captivated by the atmosphere conveyed by these works. The reason I enjoy drawing the final episodes of my own works is entirely due to Director Dezaki’s influence! Currently, Osamu Tezuka and Ikki Kajiwara, the two individuals whom I revered as gods in the manga world, are no longer with us. Even now, these works, which possess added charm, continue to provide us (even those who have become professionals) with anticipation for the next episode, life lessons, and motivation for creating works. Seagulls, dance! Liquids, shine!! Wind, blow and then, “Why go to such lengths?” Charafo! Go as far as you can go! Mariko, somehow you’re really scary, Mariko.
Then the words scribbled next to the drawing of Mariko:
You are the protagonist of this work! I’m paying the most attention to you. You’re not alone! That’s right! Make me Mariko’s ‘older brother’… ‘older brother’…
Mariko is saying (OCR mangling here, sadly):
Thank you… I just feel… that’s special… Why not? If I had to say, maybe it’s a ‘woman’s world’…
(Clearly a reference to Rikiishi Toru of Dezaki’s earlier anime Ashita no Joe, who intensely speaks of a “man’s world”. He and Mariko love a good starvation diet!)
The little chibi version of Shimamoto(?) in the bottom left is saying:
But everyone, don’t easily become someone’s ‘older brother.’ It’ll be troublesome later!
GPT-4 noticed a cute reference it couldn’t include in its translation. Its note:
The text seems to be OCR scanned partially, and hence some meanings might be missing or distorted, such as “マンガ界のジョン・シルバーだ!!”, which appears to compare Dezaki and Sugino to a ‘John Silver’ of the manga world.

Volume Three’s “From the staff to all the fans”
Bio:
Tomoko Konparu Born on March 13, 1956, in Nara Prefecture. Pisces. Blood type AB. A fan of both manga and anime, she became a screenplay writer and debuted during her university days with “Ikkyu-san.” Anime works include “Urusei Yatsura: Only You,” “Urusei Yatsura: Remember My Love,” “Touch 2: Farewell Gift,” “Phoenix,” “Cat’s Eye,” “Hime-chan’s Ribbon,” and more. Novel works include “Mystery at the Tower of London,” “Mystery at Nara’s Great Buddha” (published by Kobunsha Bunko), among others.
The letter:
When I heard that this work was going to be turned into an anime, I was shocked. I’d known about the series since its serialization, so my reaction was something like, “What!? Are they really going to do it!? And on NHK of all places!?” Expanding on the original work and filling in the parts that hadn’t been depicted was incredibly challenging, but also enjoyable. What surprised me was that, around the midpoint, the characters started to assert themselves, taking actions that were entirely different from what I had planned. The princess would say, “My pride isn’t so easily swayed,” San Just would insist, “I’m not going to commit suicide,” and even the older sisters of the sorority were like, “We can’t back down now.” Every time this happened, I had to rework the composition. This phenomenon of “characters moving on their own accord” was a first for me in an anime series, and it was an incredibly fresh and pleasant experience. That being said, it’s rare to be so emotionally invested in characters while working, to the point of even role-playing their lines. To be honest, this was a work that got my inner anime fan excited. Ah, I want to do work like this again!

It appears to be titled “To the Unforgettable Older Sister”. Much of it is too hard to OCR. It opens with this caption:
“To My Older Brother…” is so melancholic and sentimental that it instantly takes us back to our student days where we felt we were tossed around by fate for no fault of our own…
Here’s some of the text beside the character drawings:
Fukiko/Saint-Just: Reputed as the most beautiful sisters in school Mariko: The most popular Mariko-san who lured our tears. There’s a lot to think about! Tomoko: A straightforward, kind friend Nanako: So there I was, fully embracing my Nanako persona, reaping all the sorority perks you could imagine. (I mean, they even say they’ll hook me up with a dreamy guy!) 💧 And just when I’m soaking up that sorority vibe, guess who’s set to make a surprise appearance right after the teaser for the next issue!
Text coming out of the TV:
It was “Oniisama e”!!!! Poor Mariko-san, right~ Misaki-san also, there was no need to say that much, you know.

The unusual relationship between Sanjust and Fukiko reveals a tragic past of a failed double suicide. He has worked on numerous soundtracks such as NHK’s morning drama “Youth Family,” TBS’s “Women Work Hard” and “Life Is Full of Demons.” With his genre-defying approach to music and his bright, humorous personality, he is a sought-after multi-artist in various fields.
The letter:
I’ve worked quite a bit with Music Director Seiji Suzuki in the past. Suzuki gives me the music menu, and I’m the one who creates it. We’ve had some pretty detailed discussions about it. Of course, I’ve read the original work as well. When I read it at home, my daughter gives me a puzzled look, as if to say my interests have changed quite a bit (laughs). I think I wrote around 40 songs in total. The music is meant to have a Baroque sound while also feeling contemporary. The order was for something classical yet with a pop atmosphere. The image that immediately came to my mind was a rhythm section, with a harpsichord playing the melody. String instruments intricately marking the rhythm, much like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. And on top of that, a flugelhorn playing the melody… Regarding the scenes where the piano is played, I played all of it myself. I often compose and perform my own pieces. It’s less about talent and more like playing two roles; maybe I contribute quite a bit to cost-saving (laughs). In any case, this work has a unique atmosphere. If the music I created successfully captures that, then I must again express my gratitude to Suzuki for coordinating everything. October 28, 1993, aired on NHK

Way to go!! Oniisama e… Wow!! The long-awaited, tumultuous Volume 4!! This volume shows us the peak of the series, from Mariko-san’s stabbing incident to the dissolution of the sorority. Amazing, this is really amazing!! Yes. Especially the heartbreaking breakdown of Nobuo’s family, and the portrayal of the sorority’s downfall reminiscent of the French Revolution, are things that are indescribable with words. Yes. The highlights this time are– Brilliant! Highly sophisticated direction and high-quality animation in Episode 27! Tear-jerking! In Episode 28, Mr. Nobuo Hikawa’s soul-stirring outcry!! Upon hearing those lines, my tears really wouldn’t stop. Seriously. Amazing!! Oh, so moving! The heartfelt words of Miya-sama at the end of Episode 32. The sight of Miya-sama waiting alone in the Sorority House and those lines really hit me hard. Moreover, as always– Incredible!! The world that reminds me of ‘Aim for the Ace!’ and ‘The Rose of Versailles’!! Impressive!! The drama unfolds only in limited settings, like homes, trains, buses, crossings, schools, and other familiar places!! Very Sophisticated!! The direction, composed of stillness and motion, light and black, feels so mature. As expected, Dezaki-san! And, Powerful!! Nanako-san is turning into an adult right before our eyes. Moreover, the music is also great!! I wish the BGM CD would come out soon. The use of chimes and telephones remains clever as ever!! Ah, the only thing missing is a bit more on the background elements… by H. ANO ‘93 10/27
The tiger is saying “It’s awesome, isn’t it!”

The letter:
As one who has journeyed far from that radiant chapter called youth, a time that shone with an almost awkward brilliance, I find myself in a peculiar blend of bewilderment and nostalgia. Seeing my old ideas of high school life come to life as animation almost 20 years later is surreal, to say the least. Still, it’s exciting: hearing voices given to these characters, seeing them talk, laugh, and get angry. Watching them come alive is truly a thrilling and satisfying experience. Ah, adolescence — everyone’s inescapable stairway to adulthood. Some people take each step slowly and carefully, while others rush ahead, ending up out of breath or even lost. And then, there are those who may lose their direction, standing still, contemplating each step. Wrapped in the love of family, meeting various people, nurturing friendships, experiencing love, and going through the ups and downs of hurt and forgiveness — it would be wonderful to climb those steps in such a way.
Volume Five’s “Letter to Dear Brother”
Bio:
Rumiko Takahashi Born in Niigata Prefecture. Debuted in 1978 with “Katte na Yatsura,” submitted while still in college, in Shonen Sunday. Famous works include “Urusei Yatsura,” “Maison Ikkoku,” and others. Currently serializing “Ranma 1/2” in Shonen Sunday.
The letter:
A masterpiece infused with the creator’s soul. When I heard from the staff that “Oniisama e…” was getting the anime treatment on satellite TV, I was surprised. I’d delved into the original comic before and it’s quite an eccentric story. “How are they going to pull this off?” I thought. But learning that the script was in the capable hands of my acquaintance Tomoko Konparu, I was very excited. In fact, the anime that aired was genuinely captivating. The characters are so larger-than-life that they electrify the screen the moment they step into frame. It’s been a long time since an anime had that kind of presence. I believe the animation is done by the same people who worked on “Tomorrow’s Joe 2.” The scenes are so visceral that you can almost feel the punches land and see the fighters hit the mat. I kept asking myself, “Why isn”t a mouthpiece flying out?” (laughs) My favorite character in the work is Nobuo Mariko. The scenes where she bites her lip until it turns a flushed red, I find it really cute. But what blew me away was the show’s emotional intelligence. Just when the heroine seems on the brink of breaking, a lifeline is thrown her way. This nuanced touch prevents the darker, more harrowing elements from overwhelming the viewer. It’s as if you can feel the sincerity of the creator throughout the piece.
And that’s it. Again, check out the full scans on Archive.org, and remember to encourage all your friends to experience this beautiful anime!

It's just like, damn man communication and getting info cost so much around 2000.
You wanna look up some information on the phone so you can call someone that isn't in your phone book? That's like $4 in modern money.
You wanna call your aunt who lives a couple of states away and you're not paying the extra monthly landline cost for unlimited long distance? $15 in modern money for a 10 minute call in daytime hours, still like $3 nights and weekends, and these are both like "you got a pretty good deal" cases. Worse for most people.
OK so you just want to call your buddy who moved like 25 miles away? Maybe it's free cuz you lucked into still being in the same local call zone, but maybe you're still paying $3 in modern money for a 10 minute conversation because you managed to hit through two long distance zones. Especially if you're on opposite sides of a metro area or something. And if he had a cell phone you were calling, it might mean you paid even more because it registered as a further call.
But that's landline, let's say you were going cell. You might be paying the equivalent of $50 a month in modern money for 120 minutes of call time and no included texting. This service would likely charge you extra for "roaming", that is being out of your designated home calling area, as well as exceeding 120 minutes of talk time (and you would be billed a full minute minimum for any call that connected, mind), and texting once might be 75¢ in modern money on a cheaper provider, as much as $2 modern on others. Your excess call minutes might cost between 50¢ and $3 in modern money per minute and roaming calls would cost similar amounts even when you were within your plan. And on such a plan there was no cell data service so it would be an addon around $5 a month in modern money to have it at all - and prices of between 35¢ up to $5 in modern money per kilobyte transferred. Even if you were using strictly plain text that piled up quick.
You could of course move up to significantly more expensive plans per month in fixed costs to have much bigger pools of call minutes, freedom from roaming charges texts, and data. And to have significantly cheaper per-unit overage charges if you exceeded those. But that would quickly take your bill beyond $100, even $200 a month in modern money for a single line.
And of course if you wanted a couple songs from favorite singer? You ain't streaming it on a cheap monthly plan or likely even paying individually: your ass is paying nearly $38 in modern money for the whole album on CD, maybe $23 in modern money if you got a good sale price. And the artists still got a fraction of a penny off it cuz music royalties have been fucked forever. (of course you could pirate it probably... If you had internet service, if it was fast enough, if you could afford it for generally $36 a month in modern money for slow dialup, often much more if you had broadband available at all)
You wanna watch TV shows? Well like now you could watch the over the air stations for free. With tons of ads on the non-public stations ofc. But this is generally pre digital so there's much fewer stations on the air.
Or you could pay around $85 modern a month to get a pretty decent cable or satellite package and well you know, hope the time the shows you like line up with your schedule and of course it's full of ads too. Maybe you will setup a vcr or DVD recorder to catch what you couldn't be around for, and if you're not willing to wipe your old recording then you're going to need to drop serious cash to have fresh tapes and rewritable DVDs to keep that stuff around.
You want the higher end cable/satellite stuff? Well HBO alone back then was like $28 in modern money for a month on top of the rest of your bill - and most other similar no-ads premium channels were similar.
And let's not forget that this was still a time where getting official copies of shows on any kind of media often just Didn't Happen. Or they'd do it but they'd only put out random single episodes, maybe one full season on a multi season show. You might easily pay $26 in modern money for two half hour episodes or one full hour episode on a tape or DVD. Maybe you'd get lucky and instead be buying a whole season set for $75 in modern money, admittedly a much cheaper price per episode. Otherwise though, it's record it yourself in often pretty bad quality or trading and copying recordings from other people who liked that thing, if you got in touch with any.
And on-demand cable/satellite was just getting started and often required upgrading to a higher package, including paying more to rent a higher end TV box, with miniscule libraries. And the pay per view costs were often like $5 modern to watch a single movie squished to fit your TV, sometimes up to $35 modern for "new releases". Similarly, typical rental store costs were in the ball park of $7.50 to $30 in modern money per item, depending on overnight versus all week and sometimes old release vs new release. That shit added up quick! And Late fees could easily double up or triple up in just a few days.
And of course newspapers and magazines and books all cost money. We generally expect most of these to have some at least limited amount of free access on demand today, whether it's the free few articles a month before the paywall or getting free access digitally through your library. But of course back then, that's no such thing. A lot of online versions of publications were strict pay only, others only posted summaries for free, and that's if you were even online. It may not sound so bad to shell out 65¢ to $2 in modern money for a newspaper issue, or $4-$15 in modern money an issue for various magazines, but you'd be buying them pretty often if you wanted to keep up with things in more detail than they got into on TV. Even if you subscribe and get that discount for everything in a year, that's like maybe $90 a year in modern money for a major city paper, or $70 to $150 in modern money for a magazine depending on its frequency and size and content.
Shits just so fucking easy and cheap these days for real. You want to call someone you don't think about distance charges or roaming, you just fucking call. If you're calling overseas you probably use some app or program on a computer to call for free. A text message does not cost more than sending actual mail, it's nothing. Even all those stupid streaming services, which I don't use personally, you can have like 5 of those damn things, have way more to watch for less than cable back then, let alone modern cable prices, and have somewhat more reliability in what will be available next month!
Even when you're stuck on something like a strict budget, using prepaid cell service with blocks of minutes now, like some Tracfone "I only can afford $15 a month" stuff? It's like shlt at least that's 500 minutes/texts/megabytes of data. Like you're still getting screwed but it's much less so than what you got for that 10 or 20 or 25 years ago, and a lot more places have wifi you can use to stretch your data usage out.

too close
Tumblr media
pairing: eddie munson x !femreader
warnings: angst, substance use, cursing.
summary: two friends. too many assumptions. too close.
word count: 2.0k
author’s note: okay this might be a little confusing to read as the point of view changes A LOT. please lmk if it’s too confusing to read/if it doesn’t make any sense so i can try to fix it.
he'd been selling to me for what? 5 months? and somewhere in those 5 months, something happened.
at first it was just simple meet ups in the woods, i'd get my stuff, pay him, then i'd be out of there in less than 2 minutes. no unnecessary small talk, barely any eye contact, that was it. to be honest, i don't think i really knew what he fully looked like until a month ago. when it really started.
with the second month came the seemingly harmless,
"how was your day?" which i'd of course reply with,
"you tell me." putting a stop to that conversation as soon as it started. i don't like small talk...well,
i didn't like small talk.
i paid no real attention to eddie until he started selling to me. not even a glance in the hallways, nothing. he was practically invisible to me until we were in the woods. but even then, he was still pretty invisible. and i wish he still was.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
i was in love from the first day. no, not the first sale. the first day i saw her. it was the summer of '85, melvald's general store. i was in there, picking up something no one has business knowing, and there she was, crouched down by the rows of candy with a concentrated look on her face.
she was the most gorgeous girl i'd ever seen.
a pile of tools and bandages by her side, her hands skimmed through the varieties of candy, not knowing which one to pick. i was about to check out, passing by the aisle she was in before stopping and stepping backwards to get a second glance at her. she had a finger on her lip, her eyes slightly squinted and her concentration growing as she started narrowing her choices down, placing 3 different bags of candy in front of her.
"i'd get the twizzlers." i finally said after staring at her for way too long. she looked up, a bit surprised to see someone standing there.
"that's what i was thinking i was gonna pick.." she replied, looking back to the bags.
"i mean come on, satellite wafers aren't that good, and the kit-kat's? in this heat?" i added.
"you're right." she agreed, putting back two of her choices and picking up the twizzlers.
"thanks." she said, passing me as she carried all her things to the register. we hadn't even introduced ourselves and just like that she was gone.
until the spring of '86. look, i don't stick myself in things i have no business knowing but man, since that first sale, i wondered what a girl like her was doing around my...things. she just seemed like the kind of girl who didn't do that stuff. but i have nothing against her now that she does.
in fact, it only made me more intrigued.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
over the course of those 5 months, we'd gone from bland questions about my day to me suddenly being in his bedroom, on his bed, resting into his arms, wearing his shirts and listening to his records with a blunt he'd rolled sitting between my fingers.
but of course, we were just friends.
we started going to his place after a particular day in which it was raining and he didn't want to go out but i wasn't taking any postponement for an answer.
"fine. here's my address, just pick it up at the doorstep, don't worry about paying me." he said before abruptly hanging up the phone.
but when i got to his trailer, all i was met with was an empty doorstep. so i knocked on his door, waiting patiently in the pouring rain for him to open it.
"fuck, you're drenched, come inside." he said once he opened the door. tiptoeing up the steps in an attempt to not splash any water, i entered his dim lit trailer.
eddie stood for a second, finishing up drying his damp hair with a towel.
"sorry, i just got out of the shower." he apologized.
i didn't respond and instead just looked at him.
it was in that moment that i really took in his appearance, seeing what he really looked like. damp curls, grey sweatpants resting on his hips and a tattoo covered upper body,
i guess i could say i saw the appeal.
he wasn't terrible looking.
"like what you see?" shit, i hadn't realized i was really staring.
"no." i quickly said, darting my eyes to something random in the trailer. he chuckled lightly in response.
"i'll get your stuff." he said, turning around as he made his way to his room.
"i didn't think you'd be here so soon." he yelled from his room, receiving silence in return. my attention had shifted to something way more interesting.
"i would've left it out sooner..." his voice trailed off as he returned to the living room.
"you a fan?" he asked, peering over my shoulder at the joy division record that laid flat on the couch.
"sure." i muttered. my short answer was actually my attempt at staying calm when the record of my dreams, unknown pleasures, was sitting laying right in front of me.
"you can have it." he replied.
did he just say,
i.
can.
have.
it?
"no." i said.
"what do you mean, no?" he asked, a puzzled look on his face.
"i'm already buying that from you," i said, pointing at the bag of weed in his hand.
"i didn't bring enough money for two things."
"hold on, you were gonna pay for this?" he asked, holding up the bag.
"uh, yeah."
"no, no. this is free. you're drenched from standing out there, it's the least i can do. and,"
he paused, reaching down to pick up the record.
"this is also free. i don't play this anymore. i don't think i ever did actually." he said, holding the two items up.
"are you sure?" i asked. what's next, a million dollars?
"positive."
"triple positive?"
"if you don't take this i'm kicking you out with nothing. just pouring rain."
"that was the original plan.."
"yeah, or you can stay here til the rain calms down."
...
"you'd let me stay?"
"i mean..you do need to test that record to see if it skips..cause i don't take returns." he said with a soft smile.
so it begins, from a rainy day and record spinning to unknown mutual pining.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
and that brings us to now. where i'm sitting in front of him, not in the dark, but it sure feels like it. it's dead silence, my senses blocking out even the loudest twig snapping. confused? i'll bring you back a bit.
for months, the feeling of his attraction towards me crept in the back of my mind. that's because he wasn't as good at hiding it as me. wait no, i'm being cocky, he could just be a really nice, touchy guy. but i still leaned into the first assumption.
by now, my,
"i guess i saw the appeal."
had turned into,
"i am so in love with this man it's driving me crazy."
and i couldn't bare another second of him not knowing how i felt.
i'd been hiding it from him for so long. doing everything i could to make everything as blurry as possible.
relationship rumors?
deny. deny. deny.
friends with benefits?
deny. deny. deny.
anything that's more than friends?
deny.
deny.
deny.
but today was the day i'd no longer show denial.
we were meeting in the woods today, something about wayne needing the trailer to himself for an evening. i sat at the bench, waiting anxiously for eddie to show up, constantly turning my head at every sound.
i was a nervous wreck, i'd never confessed something like this to anyone before but i swore to myself that no matter how it went, i'd be just fine. you can't rely on another person to control all your emotions anyway. if the feeling wasn't shared that would be perfectly fine. i would just find someone else, right?
but i wouldn't have to because the feeling is reciprocated, right?
finally after what seemed like hours, i heard the rustling footsteps of what could only be him.
eddie.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
look, i'll be honest, after almost a year since that encounter at melvald's, i was still in love. maybe even more than before.
so after several months of being so close to her, i thought maybe, just maybe, she'd have the slightest attraction to me. we were way too close to just be friends. but as much as i thought this, she showed nothing.
so of course i couldn't say anything because do you know how embarrassing that would be? confessing feelings that are so obviously not reciprocated?
she always seemed so….anxious about any talk of us being more. for example, people always thought we were together, but she was always so quick to deny it, making it even clearer to me that she didn't feel the same way.
but i’m fine just being friends with her.
after all, you can’t have everything you want in life.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
the tension immediately settled in once he sat down, and it grew difficult for me to look him in the eye like normal. i kept my eyes pointed at the ground.
"what can i do for ya today?" eddie asked in a humorous voice.
"i've got this, and this, and this..." he began pulling things out of the box.
i wasn't listening at all.
at this point i was fidgeting with my hands, palms sweaty and breathing very uncontrolled. why was i so nervous? no no, it'll be fine. he likes me back. none of my other guy friends act the way he does around me…so why am i so nervous?
i can't do this, if i keep this in any longer, i'll explode.
"and then this and this and-" i cut him off.
"eddie?" i said quietly.
"yeah? did you see something you wanted?" he continued his silly act. he doesn't notice.
"i have to tell you something."
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
you know that feeling where you know something's about to end? all this time just for it all to be over with a few words? yeah, that's how i felt when those words fell from her lips.
"i have to tell you something."
it's over. she wants to end it. we got too close.
but maybe..maybe i can save this. show her it's not the way it seems. even if it kills me a little to do so.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
i watched as his cheerful expression began to falter,  almost as if he knew what i was going to say. did he? not the point.
now it was just silence. i just have to,
spit.
it.
out.
"eddie, i.." i hesitated.
"i think.." i was really struggling to form words now.
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
here it comes. just stay quiet and accept however she says it. just stay quiet.
no. i can't let it happen like this. not yet, not now, not ever.
"uh..i..think that..." she seemed nervous.
so i cut her off.
"i think that we're great friends."
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
my face dropped.
what? friends? seriously?
accept it. just accept it. he doesn't see past your friendship. and he never will. this was stupid.
"oh."
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
i said it. it killed me a little but i did it! everything's fine.
...
but why does she look so sad?
༝̩̩̥͙ ༓༝̩̩̥͙ ⊹
now we're back to now.
he's trying to talk to me. but i'm not listening. i don't know what i'm doing.
"hey, are you okay?"
"what's wrong?"
"hey.." a hand waved in front of my face, snapping me out of it.
"sorry.” i mumbled.
“what’s wrong?” he asked.
“nothing, i’m gonna go." i finally said, blinking a few times to bring the moisture back to my eyes. i quickly turned around and left, ignoring whatever he said after that.
i'm not sad.
this isn't sad.
this is nothing.
i won't cry.
i won't think about it.
we were too close anyway.

IRL DNF FIC RECS (GEORGE IN FLORIDA PT. 2)
light in a dark place [ two storms, 1/1, 3k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/44415886
The sales associate asks Dream if they’re certain about the size, because they have the same one available in a king size which may be more comfortable for two people, and George is certain his face reddens at the realization that oh, obviously she can tell we’re a couple. It’s far from the first time that someone out in public has made the same assumption about the two of them—but it’s the first time the assumption has been made correctly.
at your fingertips [ riversofgold, 1/1, 3k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43959198
“Are you cold?” Dream asks, ready to wrap the blanket around him.
“No,” he answers. “Touch me anyway.”
Dream laughs from the bottom of his stomach. “I will,” he looks at him, and thinks that he falls in love more, if it’s even possible. He pulls him closer and wraps his arms around his back. “Sweetheart.”
George shoots a look at him. “Sweetheart?”
“You are,” Dream strokes his bare knee, makes his lip curl towards his cheekbones. His heart tightens his chest. “My sweetheart.”
or Dream, George, and a boundless love that grows within them.
down my arms, a thousand satellites [ crabnap, 1/1, 8k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/40468806
“How do you feel?” George asked, low and soft.
“A little better,” Dream said. “Can you call me baby again?”
He really didn’t know where that had come from, the warmth and closeness pulling his thoughts straight off his tongue, but George’s mouth parted sweetly and his cheeks were bright pink and Dream didn’t regret a thing.
“Why?” George breathed, smiling a little, like he was trying not to but couldn’t quite manage it.
Dream was tingly all over. “Because I like it.”
or Dream gets sick and George, to his amazement, is actually very soft and caring about it. Surely nothing life-changing will come of this.
; sick fic aaaaa!! <3
down here it is always me and you [ littlemisssunmin, 5/5, 36k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35048242
They couldn’t possible talk about this, not even when Dream moved his hand closer, his fingers brushing his thigh just above his knee. Sapnap was still streaming, his voice blatantly clear in the background of their little moment shared on said best friend's bed.
It was all new.
And his heart was a beating drum in his chest.
George was used to dissect the voice on his phone for years. The inclination of his tone and intent of words.
This was the complete opposite.
They had to relearn how to communicate.
or George has finally arrived in Florida in the middle of November. He hadn't been prepared for a shift in his relationship with Dream that felt almost as easy as breathing.
; i recommended this before but it’s complete now!!
Whenever We Fall [ littlemisssunmin, 1/1, 5k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/44048232
There is a man in the kitchen. A man that he knows. A man that he doesn’t really. One who hums along to a new song that started to play, frying eggs in a pan they had only bought last week.
or George has somehow a harder time matching a face to a voice that he knows by heart and loves, or, A disconnect is adressed on a quiet moring.
; so so very sweet i died + can u tell i love this author lol
I blinked and suddenly [ sweetuhcreature, 1/1, 7k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/41710104
George gives him a wide-eyed look, feigning surprise. “You think I’m pretty?”
“You are pretty.”
It’s nothing he hasn’t said before, but George falters. Dream feels it in his slackened thighs and the limp hand around his neck.
“You— You’re pretty, too,” he admits, voice sinking. “Is that— Can I say that?"
or Everything is better in person (bits and pieces of George's first six months in Florida, as experienced by Dream).
corduroy and a brown cotton flannel [ gatzbright, 1/1, 2k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/42297015
“God,” Dream murmurs, “come here.” And then he’s pulling George close, right into the warmth of his sweater-clad chest, and George goes willingly. “Too far,” Dream says, burying the words into George’s stomach. “Being at the other end of the table was too far—”
“I know,” George says, grasping onto the back of Dream’s sweatshirt and pushing his cheek against Dream’s hair. “I’ll stay next to you tomorrow, ‘kay?” And Dream nuzzles at George’s shirt.
“Please—”
“Not gonna go far,” George whispers. “I promise.”
[Or, Dream’s overwhelmed at TwitchCon and worrying after his first panel, and George holds him close.]
Lisbon [ nervouswaltz, 1/1, 3k+ ]
https://archiveofourown.org/works/42298842
“Yeah, you love me too.”
George’s brow furrows. “Thought we had established that.”
The casual way he says it, living and breathing right next to Dream, is enough to pull at something nestled deep in his stomach and send him back towards tears. As parts of his brain come back online, the rest of the day rushes back. The crowds of people, their relentless happiness, the actual living, breathing impact he’s had. The numbers and analytics pale in comparison to the visual.
Abruptly, Dream lets out a sob.
or, Dream gets overwhelmed with the everything that is Twitchcon. George is there for him, through all of it.

I love you. The three words that they don’t say too often, not even in a platonic way—it often takes a few minutes of teasing to get George to admit that he loves Dream too, but sometimes, he still says it.
I love you. I have for a while, I think. You’re just so smart, and you’re cool, and funny, and you’ve always been around. I love you a lot. I feel like everyone can tell except for you.
or Dream and George's relationship is already ambiguous enough, but after their first Christmas together, the feelings start to get a lot realer.

George peered down at Dream. His green eyes stared back fondly, light dancing within his irises. His focus fell to his lips, and the fondness dissipated. Dream reached for his face.
"What are you doing?" George flinched back.
"Hold still.” Hesitant, but listening, George forced himself to stay put. Dream’s thumb felt around the flesh of his bottom lip, wiping the corner of his mouth. Frozen, and very possibly going insane, George held his breath.
"What is it?"
"You had something on your mouth," Dream uttered, finished. "Can't have anything on your pretty little face."
or George is given perfume for his birthday which tempts a very touch starved Dream.

People from Spaul’s Big Shot Days: Cordelia
Cordelia was Spamton’s girlfriend during most of his time as a big shot, and although they were never “THE hottest couple!!” or anything like that, they still had a following and people thought they were cute together. A salesman dating one of his commercial models? How adorable! Or so they said back in 1997.
Cordelia is a Darkner with a lime green tint to her body, which has stereotypical “model” proportions (but definitely not as raunchy as the girls you see in those “play now my lord” banner ads 🙄), and a purple dress with simple textures. Her hair is pitch black and is made up of TV and computer cords, hence her name. If forced to FIGHT she can use them to zap her targets, but she would much rather ACT and try to talk or charm her way out of a situation.
Cordelia came to Spamton’s attention as the one non-self-absorbed model he saw one day at a haircare product commercial shoot. The two began to hang out outside of work, and Spam continued to book her for commercials, with or without Mike’s advice. She continued to agree to hang out with him, sensing how lonely he was and taking pity on him. The resulting relationship was inevitable and furthered Spamton’s becoming a household name…and his Addison’s jealousy.
It really seemed like they would last forever. And for the entire year that was indeed the case! She would join him for press conferences, the occasional photo would surface in magazines of them sharing a Butler Juice at the Color Cafe…the personal affairs of a businessman were never more important than the business itself to Cyber World, but it was an amusing diversion and sweet to see, for sure.
Hell, even at the very beginning of things going downhill in 1998, she was still there for him! Showing concern for his rapidly decreasing sales and offering to help him get rid of what she assumed were speech glitches from stress. But then, slowly, physical changes started happening to Spam (although the worst ones happened after the last phone call): Hair falling out in clumps, skin hardening from silicon to plastic.
At that point, Cordelia realized something had become deeply wrong with Spamton. And between all of that and him becoming increasingly distant, unknowable, and even a little mean to her, she decided to get out while the getting was good.
There was no official breakup, although she tried to leave some hints so it wasn’t so out of nowhere. One day Cordelia was there, the supportive girlfriend to Mr. Big Shot, and the next she had fled with Tenna (more on him to come 😉) to pursue a second life in the Chapter 3 TV World. Having lost both the last caring person in his life and the biggest person responsible for pushing the name Big Shot Autos out there, he completed shut down and locked himself away in the basement to pray to a broken down robot.
The last phone call came not long after. The rest is history.
Some days Cordelia wonders how he’s doing, if he ever got better. She would genuinely hate to see how he is now and feel deeply sympathetic, but wouldn’t get close out of fear for her image as a game show model in this new World being ruined. Besides, she knows her employer hates Spamton, and how he crashed and burned and threatened Tenna’s good name as a game show host.
What would he think if he saw them reconnecting?
*I TOLD YA KRIS, WE DON’T NEED AN YONE!!!
*AND W3 ESPECILLLY D0N’T NEED ANY [[get rid of cable, switch to satellite today!]]!!!!
*…
*…Why did you have to leave me, too?
(Extra dialogue if you choose to talk to Spam in his shop about “FRIENDS” again)

No Static At All
I bought my first car in 1979. It was a two-door Toyota Corolla, and about as basic as it could be. With a four-on-the-floor (which is now a rarity!), a heater, defogger, and AM/FM radio, it got me where I needed to be. And like a lot of people back then, I bought an add-on cassette deck, and mounted it under the dash. Two speakers on the rear deck meant that I was riding in style.
Well, in my mind. I kept telling myself that.
Skip forward to the van I bought in 2020 during high COVID. I knew the rental car companies were in a world of hurt, and needed to sell off inventory to generate cash flow, which would be used to buy newer models. This meant fire sales across the country at their regional sales lots. I shopped online, and got a killer deal on a low-mileage 2019, and am still driving it.

I had owned it for a full year before I discovered there was a CD player hiding behind the LCD panel. I haven’t listened to CDs in years. I had signed up for SXM when I got the van, and that was all I ever listened to, ignoring AM/FM as relics of the past. And when I get bored with 150+ satellite stations, I sync my phone to the system, and tune in Spotify. I suspect I am no different from millions of other motorists.
All of which causes me to ponder how much music consumption has changed through the years. We have gone digital, streaming either from satellites or cellular services, and in a fairly short amount of time. Spotify did not arrive in the US until 2011, and the original XM Radio in 2008.
The only time I have even used the old-school radio was last summer while crossing western Canada. I intentionally flipped over to FM, because I wanted to experience the Canadian Content law, which stipulates that at least 35% of the songs played must have some Canadian origins, either writer, performer, or production.
Tumblr media
But for all the growth of digital music, companies like Spotify are still swimming in red ink. My students who were with me in MKT6356 last semester remember a huge end-of-semester assignment that involved watching a Netflix series about Spotify and the struggles it faced when it was founded. Their latest earnings report shows that, while listeners (both the free and subscriber kinds) rose significantly, things are not all that rosy. The firm slashed six-percent of its global workforce, or 600 employees.

And get this: Their shares popped yesterday. I guess that a growing listener base trumps losses and layoffs.
Spotify points to its aggressive moves into podcasting as the source of its woes. They dropped some major cash for exclusive rights, including $200 million for the Joe Rogan Experience. And some of those podcasts have not exactly performed at expected levels. Spotify relies on ears (unlike eyeballs for most other media), and if people are not listening (which they can track quite well), then advertising revenues will sag. Investors are bullish, though, and still see future profit potential.
In a related move, Ford just announced it was going to eliminate the AM radio in its new F-150 EVs. I’m not sure how or why they chose this model. While that move probably doesn’t ruffle the feathers of many EV drivers (or most people in general), it did upset one rural radio station owner who contends that farmers and other country folk need their AM radio to be able to get the latest wheat and cattle futures. That’s something you can’t do on FM, SXM, or Spotify.

I’ll let those people iron out that one, but for a guy who only used his broadcast radio for a few days in the last 2 1/2 years, I’m not going to lose any sleep over it. I’ve got too many choices as it stands on my SXM and Spotify. I keep sending my money to both, and were even just one of them to go away, my drives would be a lot quieter.

Kind of like in that ’79 Corolla whenever I drove out of signal range, and the cassette got stuck in the player. Oh, the humanity.

A Clash of Kings - 06 JON I (pages 84-96)
Sam tries to make Jon understand how cool libraries are, new recruits begin training, and Mormont drops some lore and philosophy on Jon in preparation for the Big Northern Road Trip. (Now with extra Northwardness.)
-
Sam yawned. "Maester Aemon sent me to find maps for the Lord Commander. I never thought... Jon, the books, have you ever seen their like? There are thousands!" He gazed about him. "The library at Winterfell has more than a hundred. Did you find the maps?"
It's an easy thing to forget, my local satellite library has thousands of books, easily, maybe even over ten thousand. A big city library? could fit a few hundred thousand, maybe more. Maybe millions. Though there are places where a library of one hundred books would seem like a vast amount.
For a place like Westeros, this is probably one of the largest and oldest collections outside of Old Town if Winterfell's library can be counted at 'more than a hundred.' And Sam's no peasant either, he was a lord's heir, for him to be in awe at the scale of the library, says a lot about the availability of books in general. Even amongst the noble class.
"An inventory," Sam said, "or perhaps a bill of sale." "Who cares how much pickled cod they ate six hundred years ago?" Jon wondered. "I would." Sam carefully replaced the scroll in the bin from which Jon had plucked it. "You can learn so much from ledgers like that, truly you can. It can tell you how many men were in the Night's Watch then, how they lived, what they ate..." "They ate food," said Jon, "and they lived as we live." "You'd be surprised. This vault is a treasure, Jon." "If you say so." Jon was doubtful. Treasure meant gold, silver, and jewels, not dust, spiders, and rotting leather.
Well someone's clearly never seen MacGyver Lost Treasure of Atlantis. "This is the treasure! Knowledge!!"
The vault opened onto one of the tunnels the brothers called the wormwalks, winding subterranean passages that linked the keeps and towers of Castle Black under the earth. In summer the wormwalks were seldom used, save by rats and other vermin, but winter was a different matter. When the snows drifted forty or fifty feet high and the ice winds came howling out of the north, the tunnels were all that held Castle Black together.
Ohhh, good world building, very sensible given the weather and conditions. I do like these little details about the architecture and buildings, the practicalities of it all. The bits that show GRRM thought about things for more than two minutes and went beyond "how cool would a giant ice wall be?!"
(Very cool, freezing in fact, it's basically an artificial glacier with a permanent address.)
The morning sky was streaked by thin grey clouds, but the pale red line was there behind them. The black brother's had dubbed it Mormont's Torch, saying (only half in jest) that the gods must have sent it to light the old man's way through the haunted forest.
Haha, the gods lighting directional beacons... they can't even pick up the phone and take a message correctly.
mmm, but there we have another interpretation of the comet, and again, it's localised, very 'how does this relate back to us and our world view and current events.'
The sept tempted him no more than the brothel; his own gods kept their temples in the wild places, where the weirwoods spread their bone-white branches. The Seven have no power beyond the Wall, he thought, but my gods will be waiting.
Well that's neither creepy nor ominous...🙃 (concerned sarcasm)
"What do you make of them, Snow?" ... "They smell of summer," Jon said as Ser Endrew bullrushed his foe and knocked him sprawling. "Where did Conwy find them?" "A lord's dungeon near Gulltown," the smith replied. "A brigand, a barber, a beggar, two orphans, and a boy whore. With such do we defend the realms of men." "They'll do." Jon gave Sam a private smile. "We did."
You know what that is? Growth. And also Satin? (Who I have not met before? yay! welcome to the team!)
It's a good moment of character growth though, for Jon. A quiet one, but a good one, that he can recognise potential in others, and also that he himself was not as good as he had believed, that he also has grown into a better man and brother of the Watch.
"These are old," Mormont complained, and his raven echoed him with a sharp cry of "Old, old." "The villages may come and go, but the hills and rivers will be in the same places," Jon pointed out.
... Jon. Sweetheart. Have a seat. Actually, can the writers of La Brea come have a seat also. Now, we'll start slow, so y'all can keep up. We're going to begin with something called "weathering" and "erosion."
(For those not familiar, La Brea was a show that came out in 2021, a sinkhole opened a portal to the past, and some folks got stuck on the wrong side. But they knew exactly where they were because the Hollywood Hills hadn't changed their profile a single inch in 12,000 years! I have a minor beef with this show, solely because of that. and also because a ring dropped on the top soil by a boulder in the past was found by the exact same unaltered boulder, barely a few feet down in the present day. THAT'S NOT HOW TERRAIN WORKS!!! *ahem* excuse me.)
The point being, the rivers and hills might not be 100% accurate depending on how old the maps are.
"Aye, Dywen says. And the last time he went ranging, he says he saw a bear fifteen feet tall." Mormont snorted. "My sister is said to have taken a bear for her lover. I'd believe that before I'd believe one fifteen feet tall.-"
So Direwolves are fine, normal even, but Direbears is where you draw the line? ... hehehe, ah my mind went two places.
1: Owlbears 2: "Mother F☠️☹️💣king bearshark!" / "Mother F☠️☹️💣king Avril Lavigne!" (Rock N Roll, Avril Lavigne, official video.)
"How long ago was this?" "Eighty years, or close enough," the Old Bear said, "and no, I still hadn't been born, though Aemon had forged half a dozen links of his maester's chain by them. -"
I like book Mormont. It feels like he gets more 'screen time' and the down time to be more personable than the show version. The books as a whole more down time, tbh, for the characters to breathe and think and connect.
"- Tell me that none of this troubles you, Jon... and I'll name you a liar, and know I have the truth of it." Jon drew himself up, taut as a bowstring. "And if it did trouble me, what might I do, bastard as I am?" "What will you do?" Mormont asked. "Bastard as you are?" "Be troubled," said Jon, "and keep my vows."
A good chapter for Jon's character growth, the quiet kind of growth. I do like that he's acknowledged that, even though he has chosen his path, there are still feelings and connections to his previous life and family.

10 Tips for Finding the Best Satellite Phone Deals
Finding the best satellite phone deals can be a challenging task, especially when factoring in costs like upfront device prices, service plans, and extra fees. However, with a strategic approach, you can secure a great deal without sacrificing quality or service. Whether you're a frequent traveler to remote areas or someone seeking a reliable communication tool for emergencies, understanding how to save on satellite phone costs can make a big difference. In this guide, we’ll share 10 practical tips to help you find the best deals and keep costs manageable.
Tumblr media
1. Compare Prices Across Multiple Brands
The first step to finding the best satellite phone deal is to compare prices across various brands and models. Major providers such as Iridium, Globalstar, Inmarsat, and Thuraya offer different phones and plans, each with its own pricing structure. High-end models like the Iridium Extreme 9575 tend to be more expensive, while more affordable options like the Inmarsat IsatPhone 2 offer basic functionality at a lower price. Take the time to research multiple providers and models before making a decision.
Pro Tip: Look for comparison charts that list upfront costs, features, and service plan options side by side.
2. Look for Seasonal Discounts and Promotions
Many satellite phone retailers offer seasonal discounts during specific times of the year, such as holiday sales or end-of-season promotions. Keeping an eye out for these deals can lead to significant savings on both the phone and the service plan.
Pro Tip: Sign up for newsletters from popular satellite phone retailers to receive notifications of upcoming sales and promotions.
3. Consider Buying a Used or Refurbished Phone
If you’re looking to cut down on the satellite phone cost, consider buying a used or refurbished phone. Many companies sell second-hand devices that have been thoroughly inspected and refurbished, often at a fraction of the cost of a new phone. This option is particularly useful if you only need the phone for occasional use or emergency purposes.
Pro Tip: Be sure to purchase from a reputable seller that offers a warranty and guarantees the functionality of the refurbished phone.
4. Rent Instead of Buying for Short-Term Use
For those who only need a satellite phone for a limited period—such as a trip or an expedition—renting can be a much more affordable option than buying. Rental rates typically range between $50 and $100 per week, depending on the provider and phone model. This allows you to get access to the latest models without the large upfront cost.
Pro Tip: Look for rental providers that include the cost of airtime in their rental packages, reducing the overall cost of usage.
5. Take Advantage of Prepaid Plans
For users who don’t need regular access to satellite services, opting for prepaid plans can help control costs. Prepaid plans allow you to purchase a set amount of minutes in advance, with no ongoing monthly fees. This is ideal for occasional users who want to avoid being locked into long-term contracts.
Pro Tip: Be mindful of the expiration date of prepaid minutes. Look for plans that offer longer validity periods or roll-over unused minutes.
6. Choose the Right Service Plan for Your Needs
Not all satellite phone users require the same level of service. If you plan on using the phone frequently, a postpaid plan with lower per-minute rates might be the better option. However, if you’re only planning to use it sporadically, a prepaid plan will offer more flexibility. Always review the available service plans and choose the one that best fits your communication needs.
Pro Tip: Watch out for hidden fees, such as activation costs or roaming charges, when reviewing service plans.
7. Buy During Off-Peak Seasons
Similar to buying airline tickets, purchasing a satellite phone during off-peak seasons can sometimes yield better deals. Retailers may drop prices when demand is lower, often during the offseason for outdoor activities like hiking or sailing.
Pro Tip: Avoid purchasing during peak travel seasons when prices tend to rise due to higher demand for communication tools.
8. Negotiate with Retailers
While it may not be common practice for everyone, negotiating with satellite phone retailers can sometimes result in a better deal, especially if you're buying multiple devices or opting for a comprehensive service package. Some retailers may be willing to throw in accessories or additional services to secure your business.
Pro Tip: It helps to research competing prices before negotiating, so you can reference better deals from other retailers during the discussion.
9. Use Online Marketplaces
Sometimes the best deals on satellite phones can be found on online marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, or specialty tech stores. These platforms often have lower prices than traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, especially if you're open to purchasing a used or refurbished device.
Pro Tip: Be cautious when buying from third-party sellers. Check for verified reviews and seller ratings to ensure you’re getting a legitimate product.
10. Consider a Satellite Phone Bundle
Some retailers offer bundle deals that include the satellite phone, necessary accessories (like chargers and spare batteries), and even prepaid minutes or service plans. These bundles can save you money compared to purchasing each item individually.
Pro Tip: Look for bundles that provide essential accessories, such as a protective case or additional battery packs, as these are common add-ons you’ll likely need.
Conclusion
Finding the best satellite phone deals requires research, patience, and a good understanding of your needs. Whether you’re looking for a one-time rental, a low-cost used phone, or a full-service plan with all the bells and whistles, there are plenty of ways to minimize your satellite phone costs. By comparing prices, taking advantage of promotions, and exploring alternatives like prepaid plans or renting, you can find a deal that fits both your budget and your communication requirements.

Deals: Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S24 offers - Notice Today Online - #GLOBAL https://www.merchant-business.com/deals-google-pixel-9-and-samsung-galaxy-s24-offers/?feed_id=207917&_unique_id=66efc1a80ed3f Pre-orders for the new iPhone 16 series started Friday last week and this Friday the new Apple phones went on sale. The big question now is should you buy one? And if not, what then? Last week we focused on refurbished iPhones as an alternative. This week we will focus on what the Android world has to offer. We start with Google. The Pixel 9 has a 6.3” OLED display, not an LTPO, but it does run at 120Hz (making the iPhone 16’s 60Hz display look ancient). The Tensor G4 is no match for the Apple A18 in general performance, but it handles Google’s AI features just fine – and those AI features are already working, while Apple is still playing catch-up. The phone has a 50MP main camera and a 48MP ultra wide, an upgrade that the iPhone 16 missed out on (it got a minor upgrade for its 12MP ultra wide). The Pixel 9 has Satellite SOS (and so do the other 9-series models), but no general chats over satellite. However, with iOS 18, iPhones 14 and newer will be able to use the Messages app to chat with friends and family even outside of network coverage. This only works in the US and Canada, but we expect to see this feature expand to new regions next year. The Google Pixel 9 Pro upgrades to a 6.3” LTPO panel with a higher pixel density, making it a better match for iPhone 16 Pro’s new 6.3” LTPO display. It has the 50MP main and 48MP ultra wide of the vanilla model (here matching 16 Pro’s new 48MP ultra wide), in addition to a 48MP 5x (113mm) periscope – giving it a leg up on Apple’s 12MP 5x (120mm) periscope. Also, the Pixel Pros have a new 48MP ultra wide (17mm) selfie camera – an upgrade that iPhones might get next year. Note what we said above about the Tensor G4 and the Satellite SOS.The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL goes up against the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a 6.8” display. Accounting for the slightly different aspect ratios, the Pixel display is around 5% smaller by surface area. The rest is the same as the smaller Pro model and the same applies for the iPhone. One thing left to mention is that both Google and Apple boosted wired and wireless charge speeds this year. We have already tested the Pixels, expect results from the iPhones soon.Apple doesn’t have a foldable yet, we just keep seeing rumors of delays. But Google does and the second generation makes some key usability upgrades. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a 6.3” (20:9) cover display and an 8.0” inner display (both 120Hz, the inner one is LTPO). The 48+10+10MP triple camera isn’t as capable as on the other 9 Pros, but that’s a common issue with foldables. Still, like with AI, Google is ahead of the curve compared to Apple when it comes to new mobile form factors. The Google Pixel 8a offers a relatively affordable alternative to the 9-series. However, a 9a is expected by the end of the year, so you might want to wait. The one major upgrade will be the more efficient Tensor G4 chipset as the G3 inside the Pixel 8a isn’t great. Still, this model will be supported for 7 years, so you can buy one now and not worry about changing phones until 2031.Like Google, in fact, thanks to Google, Samsung launched Galaxy AI this year. It made its debut on the Galaxy S24 series and was rolled out to older models too. Also like Google, the Samsung is giving the S24 series 7 years of support. The Samsung Galaxy S24 has a 6.2” 120Hz OLED display, finally, an LTPO panel. The camera setup hasn’t seen a major upgrade in a while and features a 50MP main, 10MP 3x (67mm) tele and 12MP ultra wide. There is no satellite connectivity here and charging is still done at 25W wired and 15W wireless. The Samsung Galaxy S24+ has a 6.7” display, QHD+ LTPO (hurray!), and 45W charging for the battery. The camera is the same as on the small S24, though. Again, no satellite connectivity of any kind on the S24 series, so Samsung is behind on this front.
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra seems to be the only one getting camera upgrades. It features a 200MP main sensor, two telephoto modules (50MP 5x 111mm periscope and 10MP 3x 67mm), plus a 12MP ultra wide. The S Pen is unique to the S Ultra series and turns the 6.8” LTPO OLED display into a canvas for notes and sketches.OnePlus will be launching a new flagship soon, but a brief mention of the OnePlus 12 is warranted – it’s a relatively cheap phone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and a 6.82” QHD+ LTPO display. And the 50MP main is accompanied by a 64MP 3x (70mm) tele and 48MP ultra wide. Plus, the large 5,400mAh battery supports 80W wired charging and 50W wireless. The OnePlus 12R is even cheaper and combines the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with a 6.78” LTPO display. The camera is somewhat basic with a 50MP main, 8MP ultra wide and no tele. The 5,500mAh battery only supports 80W wired charging, no wireless. Also note the low water resistance rating, IP64.We may get a commission from qualifying sales.“Pre-orders for the new iPhone 16 series started Friday last week and this Friday the new Apple phones went on sale. Deals: Google Pixel 9 and Samsung Galaxy S24 offers - Notice Today Online https://www.merchant-business.com/deals-google-pixel-9-and-samsung-galaxy-s24-offers/?feed_id=207918&_unique_id=66efc1a876402 #GLOBAL - BLOGGER BLOGGER Pre-orders for the new iPhone 16 series started Friday last week and this Friday the new Apple phones went on sale.
