Who wants to hear me talk about the “then and now” of my rebelcaptain art? No one! But here I go (You can also chime in with a comment or anonymous message)

2017 <——> 2023

My 2017 Jyn x Cassian art had a lot of uhm… raw feelings. Drawing and drawing them in particular was a coping mechanism for me as I tried to deal with the death of my younger brother, and a lot of my art then expressed my sadness & grief and had themes of hurt/comfort, I guess. In the left drawing, an emotionally guarded Jyn is surprised by Cassian’s gentleness with her. On the technical side, my line work here is very rushed, very unfinished, pretty raw. I used a round brush set at a low opacity, because for as confident as I am sometimes while drawing, I still hesitated with strokes. I was also still scared of making “bold” art? Back then, I was very self-conscious about my art never looking finished and for some reason I told myself that if it was going to be sketchy then it didn’t deserve to have bold, opaque lines and color. The coloring was the equivalent of slapping paint on a canvas just to fill with slightest bit of thought for some kind of shadow so it didn’t look extremely flat.

TL;DR: the quality of the 2017 drawing reflected a lot of uncertainty I had as an artist and was rushed because I had a lot of feelings that needed an outlet.

2023 art is bolder. More vibrant. Has more confidence. The line work is still sketchy, but I’m not as scared of it anymore. Could I make art with clean and crisp lines? Sure. Is that my style? Not really. If I’m honest, as soon as I finished it I was a little upset thinking the piece didn’t have as much emotion to it as the original. The emotion is there, but it’s different. The colors and lines have more weight, but this new version feels lighter. It feels softer, and more comfortable, to me. Like, the Jyn in this one is probably still a little emotionally guarded, but Cassian’s gentleness is welcomed as something that “just is”, if that makes any sense.

My life hasn’t gotten any easier, but I have a different perspective on things now. I’ve come to terms with this grief from losing my brother. It’s never going away and it will never hurt any less, but I’ve gotten better at not letting it consume me all the time. I don’t know where I’m going with this.

TL;DR: 2023 drawing reflects more confidence in my skills and isn’t so angsty.

I’ve been off this site/app for such a long time. Sure, I’ve checked my timeline here and there through the years but after the whole tumblr/yahoo/censorship debacle I didn’t know what to do with this site, plus everyone kinda switched over to twitter, so there was no point in staying here.

But I’m glad I’m back. And too say I’m so happy to see old blogs and mutuals still be so active in the same sphere as all those years ago - blessing. What a blessing.

Since 2018 life had drastically change for me. And with that also came most hardships that I would’ve never foreseen (I mean, it’s life, what can u do). But now I’m settled and stable for the most part and I can finally go back to the things I so deeply loved.

But once again, when I took them off the shelf at some point, I forgot the order, so I just placed them in a way that felt about right, trying to remember when I bought them

And then, sometimes I just place them in a way that I like more, without thinking about the date, just what looks correctly to me
