MASTERPIECE PBS and Mammoth Screen have announced the remaining casting for its upcoming adaptation of The Forsyte Saga.

Fiona Button (The Split) plays Mrs. Clarissa Heron, Irene’s (Millie Gibson) stepmother and Tristan Sturrock (Poldark) plays Professor Heron, Irene’s father.

Justine Moore (Call the Midwife) plays June Forsyte, the 18-year-old daughter of Frances (Tuppence Middleton) and stepdaughter of Jolyon Forsyte (Danny Griffin).

Eleanor Jackson (The Royal Mob) is Winifred Forsyte, daughter of James (Jack Davenport) and wife of Monty (Tom Durant Pritchard). Naomi Frederick (Belgravia) plays Emily Forsyte, James’ wife.

Sharon Rose (Silent Witness) is Alicia Cole, wife of Jolyon’s best friend Isaac (Owen Igiehon).

They join the previously announced ensemble which includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.

BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co. Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.

Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames. Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law. Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.

Planned as a lavish returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives and loves of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London.

The Forsyte Saga is directed by Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) and is produced by Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow). Filming is currently underway in the UK and Venice, Italy. The executive producers are Sheena Bucktowonsing, Debbie Horsfield, Meenu Gaur and Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, part of ITV Studios, and Susanne Simpson for MASTERPIECE.

The first signs of a new remake of The Forsyte Saga appeared on production listings at the beginning of April 2024. While there had been rumors before about the series returning to television, the pre-production announcements were the first sign the project was getting off the ground, with Mammoth Productions most likely behind it. However, it was unclear if the show was a BBC series, an ITV series, or a series made for PBS or Masterpiece, or a combination thereof. But with filming now about to get underway, details are out, and Masterpiece is the one taking the lead on the project, with a stellar cast lined up to star.

The Forsyte Saga is considered the British period piece that allowed the WGBH folks to launch the Masterpiece anthology series as PBS launched nationwide. The series was first aired in the U.K. on the recently launched BBC 2 in 1967, a network most TV viewers did not have yet. It proved so popular that it was rerun on BBC One a few months later, making it technically the first show to make the jump from network to network due to rising ratings. The series then transferred to the U.S. and aired on local PBS stations across the country (which were at that point not under a national umbrella as yet) and proved a massive hit, bringing in numbers that beat out the "Big Three" networks of NBC, CBS, and ABC. Its success proved an appetite for the best of British programming, presaging Masterpiece's launch two years later.

It's now 55 years later, and though Masterpiece aired a new version in 2002, nowadays, it is no longer just an importer. The streaming wars have made it so that the anthology series must co-produce and sometimes take the lead on commissioning shows. The choice to make its own The Forsyte Saga is unsurprising, considering the show's history and its reputation, which means that it has pulled in quite an impressive cast.

One reason Masterpiece has taken charge of the project? This way it can dictate how many seasons there are and when it is renewed. Make no mistake, this is planned as a multi-season venture. Here's the series logline:

The first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition, and betrayal.

Outside of the titular family, Josette Simon (Broadchurch) will play Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family; Jamie Flatters (Liar) is architect Philip Bosinney, Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) plays lawyer Isaac Cole, and last (but certainly not least), OG 1967 The Forsyte Saga star Susan Hampshire OBE plays Lady Carteret.

Debbie Horsfield (Sanctuary: A Witch's Tale) will pen all six episodes, with directors Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) splitting helming duties and Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow) producing. Horsfield and Gaur executive produce along with Sheena Bucktowonsing, Damien Timmer for Mammoth Screen, and Susanne Simpson for Masterpiece. 

The Forsyte Saga Season 1 is expected to debut on most PBS stations in 2025.

INHORGENTA MUNICH 2024: More international and higher-caliber than ever before

For its 50th anniversary, INHORGENTA MUNICH presented itself fresher, more modern, more diverse, more international, and more high-profile than ever from February 16 to 19. The strong growth in exhibitor and visitor numbers showed: The new concept is a success.

“With new spirit and a high-quality look and feel, Europe’s leading industry platform for jewelry, watches and gemstones has set the course for a successful future,” said Stefan Rummel, CEO of Messe München. This investment is already paying off now: With 870 exhibitors from 37 countries, INHORGENTA has grown by nine percent compared to the previous year. Half of the exhibitors were from abroad, making INHORGENTA MUNICH 2024 more international than ever before. In addition, with 25,000 visitors from 90 countries, there were a good five percent more guests than in the previous year. The countries with the strongest increase in visitor numbers were the Czech Republic, Switzerland, China, France, the Netherlands, and Norway. “This large increase in exhibitors and visitors is a great confirmation of our new concept, and I am already looking forward to implementing the internationalization plans for 2025,” said Exhibition Director Stefanie Mändlein.

INHORGENTA MUNICH receives excellent marks from visitors: It was visited almost exclusively by trade visitors with a high level of decision-making authority. 96 percent founded INHORGENTA MUNICH good to excellent, and 94 percent of visitors believed that the importance of INHORGENTA MUNICH will increase or remain the same. Sarah Hill from Hamilton Hill Jewelry, U.S. said: “Inhorgenta is always special, my favorite trade fair. The reorganization of the halls was excellent.”

The continuing strong economic situation in the sector is providing an additional tailwind. Stephan Lindner, President of the German Jewelers’ Trade Association (BVJ): “The German watch and jewelry trade, in other words, the core target group for INHORGENTA, managed once again to exceed the record level of the previous year with sales of 5.32 billion euros and a slight increase of 0.3 percent.” The high-quality genuine jewelry contributed in particular to this result. Anja Heiden, CEO Jewellery Division at Wempe: “INHORGENTA has only known one direction for four years now, and that is up. It is the most important leading trade fair in Europe, and the platform for the entire industry to exchange ideas.”

50 years of INHORGENTA stood for authentic luxury from independent brands: tradition, glamor, personality, and traditional craftsmanship.

To kick off the event, leading figures from the industry celebrated an unforgettable evening in the style of the 1970s at the Tantris Maison Culinaire, full of glamor, with spectacular necklaces with well over 1,000 carats, couture, and culinary delights.

The anniversary edition of INHORGENTA was officially opened by honoring those exhibitors who have been with us for 50 years.

Summary: The Doctor tries to flush out the Flux from the TARDIS and accidentally gets herself, Yaz and Dan stuck in a time loop in a storage warehouse in Manchester a few minutes before midnight, New Year’s Eve.  Sharing the time loop with them are Sarah, the crotchety owner of the place, and Nick, a man with a worrying number of ex-girlfriends.  Oh, and some Daleks, who are super mad at the Doctor for the whole Flux thing.  Can the Doctor use unseen employee Jeff’s stash of contraband to break them out of the loop before midnight?

Doctor Who: It’s Dalek Déjà Vu in 2022 with New Year Special ‘Eve of the Daleks’

The Daleks are back. Indeed, it’s almost as if they never went away. The BBC has announced that Doctor Who’s 2022 New Year special is entitled ‘Eve of the Daleks’, and will see the Doctor once again spend January the 1st battling Skaro’s deadliest. Well, tradition is tradition. Both 2019’s ‘Resolution’ and 2021’s ‘Revolution of the Daleks’ put the Daleks front and centre on New Year’s Day, meaning this latest festive episode completes something of a trilogy for outgoing executive producer Chris Chibnall.

The forthcoming festive special was written by Chibnall and directed by Annetta Laufer, and sees the TARDIS crew joined by Aisling Bea (This Way Up, Quiz), Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black, Enterprice) and Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, Gameface). Here’s the official story synopsis:

Sarah (Aisling Bea) owns and runs ELF storage, and Nick (Adjani Salmon) is a customer who visits his unit every year on New Year’s Eve. This year, however, their night turns out to be a little different than planned as they find themselves joining forces with the Doctor, Dan and Yaz in a fight against the Daleks. The trailer for the special, which aired following the series thirteen finale, finds the cast trapped in ELF storage and stuck in a terrifying time loop with the Daleks. Will the gang manage to avoid extermination and escape the storage facility in time to see out New Year’s Day?

Doctor Who: Flux Episode 6 Review – The Vanquishers

Good question. Our money’s on ‘yes’ because a) how depressing would it be to start 2022 with the Daleks victorious over a pile of ashes that was once Aisling Bea?, and b) the Doctor has to survive to appear in her penultimate and final special episodes, which are planned to air on BBC One and BBC America in spring and autumn 2022.

Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall’s last spin in the TARDIS – in which the Doctor will regenerate – is timed to coincide with the BBC’s Centenary celebrations. After that, former showrunner Russell T. Davies will be back in the driving seat.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. According to Chris Chibnall in the official press release for the first 2022 action-packed spectacular, Sarah and Nick will have to deal with both romance and Daleks in “a New Year’s Eve from hell. Together with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor, it’ll hopefully prove the perfect New Year’s day tonic.” We’ll drink to that.

[April 30th, 2024] MASTERPIECE on PBS and Mammoth Screen today announce a major new reimagining of John Galsworthy’s Forsyte novels. Planned as a returning series, the first season of six episodes follows the lives of the wealthy Forsyte family in 1880s London and is based on Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize-winning tale of love, loyalty, ambition and betrayal.

The Forsyte Saga reunites MASTERPIECE with acclaimed British screenwriter Debbie Horsfield and UK production company Mammoth Screen, the team behind global television hit Poldark.

The stellar ensemble cast includes Francesca Annis, Jack Davenport, Tom Durant Pritchard, Jamie Flatters, Millie Gibson, Danny Griffin, Susan Hampshire, Owen Igiehon, Tuppence Middleton, Stephen Moyer, Joshua Orpin, Josette Simon and Eleanor Tomlinson.

BAFTA winner Francesca Annis (Flesh and Blood) plays formidable Forsyte matriarch Ann, with Stephen Moyer (Sexy Beast, True Blood) as her eldest son, Jolyon Senior, head of the family stockbroking firm Forsyte & Co. Danny Griffin (Fate: The Winx Saga) plays his bohemian son Jo, Tuppence Middleton (Downton Abbey: A New Era) is Jo’s status-driven wife Frances, and Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day) plays Louisa Byrne, a Soho dressmaker and Jo’s first love.

Jack Davenport (The Morning Show, Ten Percent) plays Ann’s competitive younger son James, with Joshua Orpin (Titans) as James’ shrewd and sometimes ruthless son Soames. Millie Gibson (Doctor Who) plays Irene, the dancer whom Soames falls in love with. Tom Durant Pritchard (This Is Going To Hurt) plays Monty Dartie, James’ son-in-law.

Josette Simon OBE (Anatomy of a Scandal) is Mrs. Ellen Parker Barrington, a wealthy heiress and friend of the Forsyte family, with Jamie Flatters (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as architect Philip Bosinney and Owen Igiehon (Disclaimer) as lawyer Isaac Cole. Susan Hampshire, OBE (star of the 1967 BBC Forsyte Saga for which she received the first of her three lead actress Emmys), plays Lady Carteret.

The Forsyte Saga is directed by Meenu Gaur (Murder Is Easy) and Annetta Laufer (Get Millie Black) and is produced by Sarah Lewis (The Long Shadow). Filming begins in May, 2024 in locations in England, Wales and Italy.

Screenwriter Debbie Horsfield notes, “It was an honor to be asked to write a bold new reimagining of Galsworthy’s epic saga. Our show is in part a prequel to the events of the first book, but also an opportunity to expand the world and place the women of the family center stage. It’s a love letter to the original story while offering an exciting new perspective.”

UK Christmas TV 2021: Your Guide To This Year’s Festive Specials

Though our mileage with Christmas may vary (personally mine’s all the way to space and back, but you may well refuse to even back out of the car park), we can all agree on one good thing about this time of year: television. Not the deeply un-special Christmas specials in which Gregg Wallace walks around a mince pie factory with a bit of holly pinned to his lapel, but the actual good stuff: a brand new episode of Ghosts for example, a new Terry Pratchett family animation, a creepy M.R. James ghost story from Mark Gatiss…etcetera.

Below is a selection of our top five highlights plus a bunch of recommendations that will be updated as the Christmas TV schedules are confirmed. Get the central heating on and open a tin of Roses, ‘tis the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

1. Doctor Who New Year’s Day Special

The first of three Doctor Who specials airing in 2022, the New Year’s Day episode was written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Annetta Laufer and promises to see the Doctor “encounter friends and foes (new and old) in an action-packed, thrilling adventure”. Guest stars joining Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor this time around include Aisling Bea (This Way Up), Adjani Salmon (Dreaming Whilst Black), andPauline McLynn (Father Ted, Gameface).

Air date: Saturday 1st January 2022, BBC One.

2. Ghosts Christmas Special

Button House returns after last year’s gloriously cockle-warming festive special for another, which sees Alison, Mike and the ghosts at Christmastime dealing with a mysterious visitor to the grounds whom Kitty is convinced is more than he seems. Funny, daft, good-hearted and always a must-watch.

Air date: TBC, BBC One

3. The Mezzotint

Mark Gatiss continues his string of M.R. James ghost stories for Christmas adaptations with this 1920s tale of a university museum curator and the horrific story he sees unfolding in a 19th century mezzotint image. The cast is top, and includes Rory Kinnear (No Time to Die, Years & Years), Robert Bathurst (Doctor Who: Flux, Downton Abbey, Toast of London)and Doctor Who’s Frances Barber.

Air date: TBC, BBC Two

4. Terry Pratchett’s The Abominable Snow Baby

Now an annual treat, this year’s Channel 4 animation following on from The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Quentin Blake’s Clown is Terry Pratchett’s The Abominable Snow Baby. It’s adapted from Pratchett‘s collection of festive short stories for children, Father Christmas’ Fake Beard and tells the story of a 14-foot interloper to a small village which is taught to overcome its suspicion by the love and good sense of a little boy and his grandmother. Julie Walters, Hugh Dancy and David Harewood provide the voices.

Air date: TBC, Channel 4   

5. Taskmaster Festive Special

At the time of writing, it’s unclear whether this is going to be the long-anticipated second Champion of Champions special episode (featuring the winners from series six to ten: Ed Gamble, Lou Sanders, Kerry Godliman, Liza Tarbuck and Richard Herring) OR the speculative second New Year Treat featuring five brand new famous faces. Whatever it turns out to be, it’s one of our highlights because few comedy shows are as reliably daft and enjoyable as Taskmaster.

Beauty and the Beast: A Comic Relief Pantomime for Christmas Last year, they did a star-studded version of Cinderella on Zoom, this year, it’s Beauty and the Beast. Air date: TBC, BBC Two.

Christmas Lectures from The Royal Institution England’s Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van Tam and pals explain the science of viruses. Air date: TBC, BBC Four.

Hansel and Gretel: After Ever After David Walliams is back with another Sky pantomime. Air date: TBC, Sky Max.

Robin Robin A new half-hour special from Aardman Animations about a young robin raised by a family of mice. Air date: Out now on Netflix.

Tirem as crianças da sala: as 20 séries mais picantes da Netflix

Mesmo que a Netflix ainda não possua conteúdos adultos, algumas das produções disponíveis no serviço de streaming são recheadas de cenas picantes e proibidas para menores de 18 anos. A Revista Bula vasculhou o catálogo da plataforma e reuniu em uma lista 20 ótimas séries que abrangem diferentes gêneros.

A Netflix não dispõe de conteúdos adultos em seu catálogo, no entanto, algumas de suas séries são recheadas de cenas picantes. Pesquisas empíricas indicam que elas são as maiores responsáveis pelo constrangimento de filhos que estão assistindo TV quando os pais surgem na sala. O que ocorre apenas, de acordo com as leis da termodinâmica, nos momentos mais quentes do enredo. No topo do ranking estão “Quatro Estações em Havana” (2016), de Félix Viscarret; “O Perfume” (2018), de Philipp Kadelbach; e “Wanderlust”, (2018), dirigido por Nick Payne. Os títulos estão organizados de acordo com o ano de lançamento.

Wanderlust (2018), Nick Payne

A psicóloga Joy Richards e o marido, Alan, estão casados há mais de 20 anos. Eles não sentem mais desejo um pelo outro e estão insatisfeitos com o relacionamento que vivem. Decidida a reacender a paixão em seu casamento, Joy propõe ao marido que eles experimentem sair com outras pessoas. Mas, aos poucos, o casal descobre que abrir a relação não é a melhor maneira de salvar o casamento.

Ela Quer Tudo (2017), Spike Lee
