Push Vs Precious
When it comes to films based on books, there is always that one guy. The guy who says “the book is better than the movie”!, as the proclaim there was parts of the story glossed over or left out, and that the film doesn’t perfectly encapture the story. This opinion is common, but I state that comparing books and films is difficult because the media is so different. With a book, you have limitless ways to create an image in the readers head, while a film is just doing the work for you. The 2009 film Precious is no exception, as it left out some vast details with some that needed to be inferred. These details however, while detrimental to the story, are very disturbing and heartbreaking. The film ended on a “neutral” note, while Push ended with the sad origin stories of her classmates, and was continued with a sequel book, “The Kid”.
Precious tells a sad story of a girl facing rampant sexual, verbal, and physical abuse. These traumas and life triumphs lead to her being illiterate throughout most of her life, and being kicked out of school. Ur was discovered she was pregnant with her second child, at just age 16. Both children belong to Precious’ biological father, and her mother’s long-term boyfriend, Carl Kentword Jones. Precious is unable to focus and learn due to her home life, and soon escapes with her second child and continues her education. All the while her mother, the main antagonist seeks to reconcile a relationship with her, solely for welfare benefits.
The book tells the same story, with more details in regards to her terrible upbringing. She was also molested by her mother, and her mother did nothing to stop the constant assaults from her father. Like in the film, she became envious of Precious, citing her as the reason her lover, Carl, left. Carl quit coming around as often to “pleasure” (I.e. rape) Precious after her first pregnancy at 12, which resulted in a handicapped child with Down syndrome, thrown away to be raised by Precious’ maternal grandmother. In the book, “Mongo” was expanded on, with it being relayed to Precious that her development was so stunted, she was put in a long-term care facility. One of her goals was getting her daughter back, although this never happened, strengthening her bond with her now second child, a son named Abdul.
Monique did an absolutely wonderful job portraying the evil character of Mary, but the overall film did not display her as the true villain she was. Sure she was shown as an intensely abusive narcissist, jealous of her own daughter, but the film failed in showing why she was like this. It did not expand on her story, and overall jealously, which in no way, could be justified. Her long term boyfriend was married, to a pretty light skin woman as it is stated, yet she still is in love and infatuated with Carl, when he used her, and then used her own child for sexual pleasure. She was so desperate to keep a man that never belonged to her to begin with, she let him traumatize her daughter, the one “gift” from him she was supposed to protect. She is a truly evil character resulting from various traumas that never healed, growing into a miserable, bitter, and jealous person. The contrast between her and Precious is also prevalent and more represented in the book, as Precious was so set on improving herself, and that she did. However, these improvements would mean “nothing” as the sequel of the book, “The Kid.” Continues on her story, and Abdul’s own traumatic childhood.
For those who have read the book, I am sure they agree Gabourey did a good representation of Precious. She even got the accent down, the passion to learn, and the pain she faced.

"...The two leads are just fantastic and a special mention must surely go to David Collings as the hugely likable and clever Silver. I believe in some alternate reality David Collings was cast as The Doctor after Tom Baker left the role (Well, sort of left the role when in fact he never did.) and stayed for just as many years as the great man. ..."

Safir Reactions 1x07
I previously wrote a review of the show up until episode 1x06, please reference that to see my initial impressions.
Welp... the latest episode dropped... I had to take a minute to really process all that. See SPOILERS below.
It was an episode filled with Yaman and Feraya.
Plot: Where the last episodes left off with a resolution that Feraya was ready to run away to Istanbul with her friend and raise her baby alone, because of all the harassment from Yaman, it kind of goes to shit when Yaman chases after her. He's holding onto some last hope that maybe Feraya didn't cheat on him (which she didn't) and that he can confront her about it (I don't know why he thought this time would be different when she hadn't told him before but...). They go to the vineyard where they shared a lot of special moments during their relationship (also where she tried to kill herself in the first episode, but they didn't put flashbacks of that in there, or of him confronting her with a gun when he broke up with her... do I sound bitter?) and have this moment of longing. Where I had hoped for some closure in this encounter, there was none. After she basically reaffirms her previous excuse that she's marrying Ates because they're in love, Yaman becomes very morose, calls Ates and leaves. Ates and Feraya speak (you know, because she dipped after taking money from his mom, leaving him in an uncomfortable position of having to explain and make excuses for her, and also getting blamed by her dad). He offers her an out, basically telling her that if she wants to leave for Istanbul, he'd make excuses for her and she can disappear. Feraya doesn't take the out, and decides to go through with the marriage, although she looks miserable the entire time. Yaman in the meantime makes plans to go to London (which the viewers can clearly tell is not what the actual plan is). Ates threatens everyone (mainly his mom) to stay out of his and Feraya's business and he looks hot doing so. Okan, having seen some liaisons, blackmails his way into learning about Feraya's pregnancy through one of the other characters (Bade), and the reason for her marriage to Ates, but he does not tell this to anyone.
The day of the wedding arrives, Ates gets a text from an ex (who learned of his wedding from his mother), Yaman takes a last look at Feraya and leaves a letter confessing everything for Ates in his room. Then he goes and drives himself into a wall. Feraya, who is his emergency contact, gets called about it and immediately runs to go to him. He's in critical condition when she arrives, flatlining and everything. She's in so much stress that she also collapses.
Some other shenanigans happen but that's secondary plot that I'm not going to get into at the moment.
Characters:
Feraye: I honestly don't have much to say about Feraye right now. She's an emotional mess. The girl is stressed. She's been having cramps the entire episode because of the stress she's under. I'm very sympathetic towards her feelings, but at the same time, this 'bond' that she apparently shares with Yaman is starting to piss me off. Also, I'm super pissed that she decided to go through with the wedding when she so clearly didn't want to. And f*ck Cemile's threats, because that woman does not have the reach she pretends she does. She's so clearly dreading this wedding, although I don't know why because she's marrying a GOAT, and she knows she's marrying a really sweet guy but she's acting like she's being led to her execution. And the way she clutched her chest like she 'felt' Yaman's crash... SPARE. ME! so freaking dramatic. Gross. But I'm being very harsh. The girl, as I've said previously, is still mourning her long term relationship with a guy that has been emotionally (and physically) abusing her since it ended. And now that he's 'backing off' apparently, it's like being abandoned all over again. It's like going through withdrawal almost. And rushing to his side when he's had an accident is also understandable. This is a guy that she's been with for years, has so much history with, is about to have his baby, and now he's on death's door. So I'm not going to be pissed at her for going to him. I will be pissed if she forgives him, stays with him after he's stable, and decides to trust him again, but that's future episodes problem.
Ates: Poor boy was done dirty this episode. Like he says, they are really pushing the limits of his patience here. First he gets scolded by Feraye's father who acts like he did something wrong for her to leave, and he has to find excuses for her family, then he has to deal with his own mother so she doesn't spill the beans to his grandfather that Feraye can be bought off, then he has to deal with Bade who's got some sort of snooping thing in his personal life right now. He's also got to console and reassure Feraye, when any mortal would be super pissed at this point, he is still very patient and kind to her. Now, I'm still firmly on his side, but if he turns out to be a sociopath, I wouldn't be surprised because he's getting remarkably threatening to others. I really want to see what he'd do once he's pushed off the edge of his patience. And we get a little insight into his backstory... he left a girl (Melis) at the altar. So I'm excited to see what drama will emerge with that character when she appears.
Yaman: I have a lot to say about Yaman, and a lot of it won't be good, so don't come at me, I'm giving you a warning. ... ready? okay. This LITTLE SHIT! no. I'm not sympathetic that he tried to kill himself. This jack*ss knew exactly what he was doing. He was being so manipulative, and so selfish. This is an abuser tactic. This mentally that, 'I'm thinking about you and I'm filled with you, so you have to be filled with me.' He tried to kill himself ON HER WEDDING DAY!! Forever, that day will be stained with his death. It's exactly the same thing he did with the wedding rings during the coffee ceremony (telling her "Whenever you see this ring you'll think of me") Yes, as an audience we know that this wedding means nothing to her, but he thought she was moving on, and he believed that his brother honestly loved her. He did this as a way to ruin that for them. And, I'm sorry, but are we even sure this was an honest suicide attempt? The ambulance got there awfully fast for him to be in the middle of no where crashing his car. Did he call them first? I wouldn't be surprised because this guy is an honest sh*t stain. And when did he decide to 'kill himself.'? When he didn't get the answer he wanted out of her. When she said that she is marrying his brother because she was 'caught' with him. (a lie but whatever). He did this specifically to make her feel guilty. This was entirely an abusive move on his part. Abusers do this! They say, 'if you leave me I'll die' (and wasn't that the whole point of the gun in the first episode as well). They have such an unhealthy dynamic where they are so dependent on each other and the minute she tries to move on, he's basically saying, 'look what happens when you try to move away from me. I can't live without you.' IT'S DISGUSTING! He did this just to hurt her. And as for what he's doing to his brother is also gross. He's not thinking about how he's hurting Ates by doing this on his wedding day. It's entirely a statement of 'I had her first and this day (your wedding day) is going to be mine now.' Also, he's having his older brother clean up his mess, after all the sh*t. UGGGH. Now I'm not saying the he wasn't overwhelmed. Yes, the situation is very stressful and he was likely very tired and exhausted of having his life turned upside down, and not getting any respite anywhere he goes. But he had a plan to go to London. He literally could have gone to London and just lived his life free of all of it. His wife would never have to join him or even if she did, he could ditch her anywhere in London. This suicide attempt was entirely about Feraye, not the situation with Okan and Cemile and Aleyna. This was about making Feraye see that he can't live without her. And I'm so grossed out. Massive ick. I hope he lives in the next episode and I hope he gets a massive dose of BOUNDARIES.
Okan: Maybe the real villain of this story is the childlike Okan. He's kind of a sh*t. Actually, scratch the kind of. He is a sh*t. Now, I didn't want him to tell Yaman about Feraye's pregnancy, but the fact that he didn't is a real dick move to the brother he owes a lot to. Also, I'm getting major, it's a creep, vibes from the kid.
Conclusion:
What a frustrating episode. I can't wait for the next one. I really need to see what happens next.

Sapphic Splendor
At the time I bought these, they were a bit of an oddity. Relatively unknown winery–known as pretty much a zin & blend house–down in the then-new tin city by the river in Healdsburg. They didn’t make cab every year and I had never visited. I found a few bottles at Tip Top Liquor by the railroad tracks headed out Dry Creek Valley on sale and gave it a try. HOLY WOW. Went back and cleaned out the…

'The Sapphire Rose' --A Review
Tumblr media
I have no idea how to feel about this book. For some reason, this book is the only one of the original trilogy that we had when I was growing up, so it's the one I'm the most familiar with, but reading back through it. Wow. Let's just say that we've got some slightly awkward things to discuss.
Picking up where The Ruby Knight left off, Sparhawk, Kurik, and Sephrenia are in Ghwerig's cave and they've got the Bhelliom. Sparhawk uses the two rings-- both his family's ring and the ring of the Elenian Monarchs that he was given by the ghost of King Aldreas at the end of the first book-- to control the Bhelliom and tucks it safely away to make his way back to Cimmura- with Thalesian Thief Stragen along for the ride. Once there, they cure Queen Ehlana and Sparhawk, being a stand-up guy, returns her father's ring to her. She thinks he's proposing marriage and that's where it all gets a bit awkward.
Ehlana is 18. Sparhawk is decidedly not.
To be fair, Sparhawk does his best to dissuade her of this notion. He's way too old, too broken and she deserves a younger guy to keep her happy and keep up with her. Ehlana is having none of that, however, and he spends the first third of the book fighting a valiant rearguard action against her marital intentions. He gets a reprieve by riding with the Church Knights to Chyrellos to prevent Annias from becoming Archprelate. Cluvonus finally dies and after a mourning period, the election begins-- but quickly goes sideways when a huge army shows up to lay siege to the city. A 'Crisis of Faith' is declared for the duration of the crisis and eventually, King Wargun's armies show up to relieve the siege and drive the attacking army away. The Kings of Eosia-- and the Queen, who also shows up much to Sparhawk's displeasure also arrive and an election is held.
Ehlana gives a passionate speech and while not naming any names, generally points the Hierocracy in the direction she would like them to go. (Because heaven forbid they listen to a woman!) She faints at the end of her speech and is carried to safety where it's revealed that she's just fine and the Hierocracy turns around and elects Dolmant Archprelate.
Newly elected, attention then turns to Otha and the mass of Zemochs on their borders. They all agree that a mission to Zemoch to destroy Azash is the best chance at a permanent solution- but Ehlana balks at the thought of Sparhawk potentially being killed and refuses to give up her ring. Dolmant strikes a bargain with her: the ring, in exchange for marriage with Sparhawk.
His fate sealed, Sparhawk marries Ehlana and becomes Prince Sparhawk and then the companions all set out for Zemoch and the final showdown with Azash. They make their way into Zemoch and break into Azash's palace/temple complex and all accounts are settled- but it costs Kurik, Sparhawk's friend and squire, his life. Sparhawk and Martel duel and Sparhawk wins. He destroys Azash himself, who takes Annias and Otha with him.
They make their way home to find Ehlana is with child and they settle into their lives as a family. The world seems a little gloomier, which they put down to theological problems amongst the world's various deities-- after all, a God did die and that made them all a little uncomfortable, but eventually, Sparhawk figures out that his daughter, Danae is none other than Aphrael. She gathers the companions again and breaks the gloom, bringing in spring once more.
Overall: The age gap thing is awkward and maybe even sketchy, but I will give credit to Eddings for at least having Sparhawk acknowledge just how awkward it is. Ehlana is Queen, so it stands to reason that if her childhood was a lonely one where she had to learn how to survive in her father's court- especially after Sparhawk was exiled, I'm okay with making her be more mature than you'd imagine your average 18 year old to be. (Also worth noting that in past history, with lower life expectancies, people got married much younger than that, so it's not... entirely out of the realm of possibilities.) It's just awkward.
I will say this: I have read this book many, many times, but man, when Kurik dies and Talen rushes to his body and says, "My father's dead" oh, that got me right in the feels. Was not expecting that reaction this time out- and I've read this enough to know what was coming.
But other than that, this works. It's Kraft Mac N'Cheese. Comfort food. No overly complicated world-building or mythology, just a very no-muss, no-fuss fantasy trilogy here. There's a problem, they gotta find a thingy-ma bobber to fix the problem. Then they've got to use the thingy-ma bobber to go and solve an even bigger problem. Then they all go home. It's really hard to argue with any of it.
How do I feel about the Eddings of it all? I still don't know. I enjoyed reading these books again. I enjoyed the characters. They're still good, easy reads and there are only three of them, as a posed to the ever-expanding number of works in things like The Cosmere or the fourteen volumes of The Wheel of Time. Part of me thinks, hey, they were found guilty and did the time in jail and then they got on with their lives. Does it seem fair that when they moved on with their lives they did so by becoming best-selling authors and making a boatload of money? Not really. But, life isn't fair. I feel like you can separate art from artist though-- I read these books. Maybe I'll read more of his work and see how I feel about it then. My Grade: *** out of ****
